0:01:06 > 0:01:09# Who let the dogs out? #

0:01:10 > 0:01:14Our three teams today were incredible in their heats,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16but we have something really difficult for them to...

0:01:17 > 0:01:19Steve, what's that?

0:01:19 > 0:01:23- It's got a cushion in it! - Very funny! Go and get the buggy.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26"Go and get the buggy."

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Oliver and Squib, Hannah and Jake and Buddy and JJ

0:01:29 > 0:01:32have all made it through to the semi-finals.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34Let's take a look at their journey so far.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Good!

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Oliver ands Squib had a high-flying challenge in the heats,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45and although Squib was good at jumping,

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Oliver lacked confidence with his training.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50But, come Showtime, Oliver began to believe in himself,

0:01:50 > 0:01:54and he and Squib jumped their way straight into the semi-finals.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59I think I could make it all the way to the final,

0:01:59 > 0:02:03because Squib is really good and he learns fast.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06In their skipping challenge, Hannah had real trouble

0:02:06 > 0:02:08keeping Jake focused

0:02:08 > 0:02:09on the task in hand.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11But with a lot of hard work from Hannah,

0:02:11 > 0:02:14she managed to keep Jake's interest at Showtime,

0:02:14 > 0:02:15and they skipped like pros

0:02:15 > 0:02:17to bag themselves a place in the next round.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24Going into the semi-final, I'm feeling excited...

0:02:24 > 0:02:26I can't wait to learn the next trick.

0:02:26 > 0:02:27Try that again.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31In the heats, Freddie and JJ had a fun Frisbee task to tackle.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35Despite JJ being fantastic at catching the Frisbee,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Freddie struggled with his throwing skills.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39But Freddie worked hard and when Showtime came,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43this dynamic duo flew straight into the semi-finals.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51I'm feeling really excited going into the semi-final,

0:02:51 > 0:02:55and I'm kind of nervous because I don't know what the trick will be.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03I wonder what trick our semi-finalists will be learning.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Well, here comes Ashleigh and expert Steve to reveal all.

0:03:08 > 0:03:09Hi, guys.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12- Hey, gang.- Are we all good?- Yeah. - That's what I like to hear.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Now, first, a massive well done for getting through to the next round.

0:03:16 > 0:03:17Today you're going to start teaching your dogs

0:03:17 > 0:03:21how to do a German sport called treibball

0:03:21 > 0:03:24which means teaching your dog to push those massive balls there.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27When it comes to Showtime, you will need to send your dog away

0:03:27 > 0:03:30to bring you the ball which will be 10m away.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34Your dog can only use their nose, head or shoulders to move the ball,

0:03:34 > 0:03:38and the dog that brings the ball back in the fastest time will win.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41So how does that all sound to you?

0:03:41 > 0:03:42- Cool.- Yeah? Sounds good.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44So, Steve, how do they teach this trick?

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Right, OK, it's our own little version of treibball.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49Freddie, are you good at football?

0:03:50 > 0:03:54- Good.- Beautiful! So what I want you to do is encourage your dogs

0:03:54 > 0:03:56just to touch the ball with their nose.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59As soon as they do that, I want lots of reinforcement,

0:03:59 > 0:04:01loads and loads of praise on that.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Once that's happening, I want you to get your dog the other side of you

0:04:04 > 0:04:08and encourage them to touch only the opposite side of the ball.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Then you're going to get your dog in a stay.

0:04:11 > 0:04:12You back away from the ball

0:04:12 > 0:04:15and encourage them to roll it towards you.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Then you're just going to add more and more distance.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19It's doable, you can do it. OK.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21That's yours, sir, you're going to need that.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Ashleigh's going to look after you from here on in.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26When I come back, I want to see tons of treibballing going on.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28- See you later.- Bye.- Bye-bye.- Bye.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32I feel really excited about doing treibball,

0:04:32 > 0:04:37because I feel that JJ will like the ball.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39I'm going to start with JJ first of all.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42So all I want you do it try and put the ball between your knees

0:04:42 > 0:04:45- and then guide the dog to try and touch the ball.- OK.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49- Just your nose.- Don't actually say it until she does the action, OK?

0:04:49 > 0:04:54- Nose.- Don't say it, don't say nose unless she does it, OK?

0:04:54 > 0:04:57Because if you do, she's thinking, "Oh, when you say nose,

0:04:57 > 0:04:59"I put my paw up or put both paws up," OK?

0:05:05 > 0:05:07Almost.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10Give her a treat. Good. Good girl. Well done.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Well, JJ almost touched the ball,

0:05:12 > 0:05:14but it looks like this team could have their work cut out.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16- Carry on with that.- OK.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20- Hannah and Jake. So does Jake know a touch with his nose?- No, not yet.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22OK, then, let's give it a go. So exactly the same.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24Come here, come here.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27- Good boy! Nose.- Good. You know what? I really like that,

0:05:27 > 0:05:29because you just made up your own technique

0:05:29 > 0:05:31- and that's what training is all about.- Come here.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Wow! Hannah and Jake seem to be impressing Ashleigh already.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37So this time let's try picking the ball up

0:05:37 > 0:05:39and just holding it in front of his face,

0:05:39 > 0:05:41and let's see if he'll touch it all by himself.

0:05:42 > 0:05:43Jake.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44Jakey.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47- Maybe run around with him a little bit.- Jake! Jake! Jake!

0:05:47 > 0:05:49Make it look like loads of fun.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52- Yeah, good boy!- Yeah! Yeah!

0:05:52 > 0:05:53- Do you want to sit now?- Sit.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55- Sit.- Let's try it again.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58- Good boy!- Yes, yes! Good boy!

0:05:58 > 0:06:00Good. Make sure you give him a treat.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04If he's getting bored, look like you're having loads of fun with it,

0:06:04 > 0:06:06so then he has to interact with it, OK?

0:06:06 > 0:06:07The best bit about the training session

0:06:07 > 0:06:09was finding out the new trick

0:06:09 > 0:06:12cos I've never done anything like this one before.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14So, Oliver and Squib, you've been waiting patiently.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17- Now, does Squib touch with his nose? - Yeah. Touch.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19- Good boy.- Good.

0:06:19 > 0:06:20Well done.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22This time I want you to do it with the ball, though.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25As soon as he touches it, do your "Good boy, treat"

0:06:25 > 0:06:27as quickly as possible, OK?

0:06:28 > 0:06:30- Touch.- Good boy.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33OK. We don't really want him popping it, but give him a treat for that.

0:06:33 > 0:06:34Good boy.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Well, Squib is touching the ball,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39but he seems to have an odd technique of biting it.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Good! This time I want you hold it a little bit higher,

0:06:42 > 0:06:44so he can't really reach it with his paw.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47Can you touch?

0:06:47 > 0:06:49- Good boy!- Good boy!

0:06:49 > 0:06:52- So make sure you get your "Good boy" in a lot sooner, OK?- Yeah.

0:06:52 > 0:06:53Can you see it?

0:06:55 > 0:06:57Good boy! Give him a treat for that.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59It's still good. Good. Well done.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Training went quite well cos...

0:07:01 > 0:07:04I thought it was going to be a disaster at first,

0:07:04 > 0:07:06but he started getting the idea of it.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Right, guys, you've done really, really well.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12I'm going to leave you now and hopefully you will get on practising.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15Make sure you're having fun with your dogs as well. OK?

0:07:15 > 0:07:16- Bye.- Bye.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19Well, the team's treibball training with Ashleigh is underway,

0:07:19 > 0:07:24but with a place in the grand final at stake, the pressure is on.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32While our trainers are working hard,

0:07:32 > 0:07:34take a look at these gravity-defying dogs

0:07:34 > 0:07:37that certainly have a spring in their step!

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Everyone knows that dogs can't fly,

0:07:43 > 0:07:46but they do seem to love being in the air.

0:07:46 > 0:07:47See what I mean?

0:07:47 > 0:07:50And if they're not flinging themselves into trees,

0:07:50 > 0:07:52they're climbing them.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55Excuse me, but isn't it cats that are supposed to climb trees?

0:07:55 > 0:07:58Climbing sand dunes is also fun.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02In fact, dogs will do anything to get themselves up high.

0:08:02 > 0:08:03# The only way is up... #

0:08:03 > 0:08:06But can they actually defy gravity?

0:08:07 > 0:08:09This one looks like he's walking on water,

0:08:09 > 0:08:11but I can assure you he's not.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13That's almost walking on water!

0:08:13 > 0:08:17Wow! Now, that's defying gravity!

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Still to come...we learn all about the brilliant benefits

0:08:24 > 0:08:26of microchipping your dog.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31And we find out which of our treibballing teams make it

0:08:31 > 0:08:32to the grand final.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39Back in the Dog House garden,

0:08:39 > 0:08:41our trainers are still hard at work.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46Right, guys, just hold your training there a minute.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50- So, Freddie and JJ, I know you were saying nose to her...- Yeah.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53I think nose sounds a little bit too like no.

0:08:53 > 0:08:57So maybe you can try a push instead. Yeah? Shall we try that?

0:08:57 > 0:08:59- Here, push.- Good.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02Wow! That was a good touch from JJ

0:09:02 > 0:09:05and the new command seems to be working well.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09Now, I want you to try and do it without putting your hand there.

0:09:09 > 0:09:10JJ.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13There we go. Give her a treat. Even if she just touches it by accident.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16That's how you always start training.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18OK. What about if you just rolled it along the floor?

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Good girl, yes! Treat, treat, treat, treat!

0:09:22 > 0:09:24Well done.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26Wait, wait, wait, wait.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30- Push, good boy.- Good! That looked brilliant!

0:09:30 > 0:09:32How have you been getting on?

0:09:32 > 0:09:35- Well, he wants to play with it... - Well, that's what you want.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Hannah wasn't kidding when she said Jake wanted to play with the ball.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Come on, come on.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45But running off with it is not what is wanted!

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- Wait. Off, off. Stop! - Just pick your ball up a minute.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51Pick it up so he can't get it. OK?

0:09:53 > 0:09:56So this time, put him in a sit, and tell him to wait

0:09:56 > 0:09:59- and then slowly take the ball away from him a little bit.- Wait!

0:09:59 > 0:10:00Wait!

0:10:00 > 0:10:02Stay!

0:10:02 > 0:10:03Stay!

0:10:03 > 0:10:05Stay!

0:10:05 > 0:10:06Stay!

0:10:06 > 0:10:08Back off a bit.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12- Push. That's it, good boy! Good boy! - Give him a treat.

0:10:12 > 0:10:13Well done.

0:10:13 > 0:10:18That's more like it. When Jake is focused, this team are unstoppable.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21- Oliver and Squib, how's Squib been getting on?- Good.

0:10:21 > 0:10:22Squibby, sit.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24Touch.

0:10:24 > 0:10:25Good!

0:10:25 > 0:10:28Wow! That was a perfect touch from this team

0:10:28 > 0:10:30and Squib has stopped biting the ball.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33Now, what I want you to do is just back off a bit.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37So exactly the same, but back off a tiny little bit, even just a step.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39There you go.

0:10:39 > 0:10:40Sit.

0:10:40 > 0:10:41Touch.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Good! Yes, well done.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46Right, Oliver, don't ever be scared to be over the top.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50He needs to know that what he's just done is really, really good, OK?

0:10:50 > 0:10:52- Try it again.- Squibby, sit.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55Squibby, touch.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57- Good! Well done.- Whoo!

0:10:57 > 0:11:01Right, guys, it is time for you to take your balls home now.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04Try and practise as much as possible,

0:11:04 > 0:11:06and I'm sure when I come back

0:11:06 > 0:11:09there will be loads and loads of improvement, OK?

0:11:09 > 0:11:11- Bye.- Bye.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15After Day 1, Hannah and Jake and Oliver and Squib

0:11:15 > 0:11:16are progressing well,

0:11:16 > 0:11:20but it looks like Freddie and JJ have a bit of catching up to do.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27JJ, Squib and Jake are all equally amazing

0:11:27 > 0:11:29to have made it to the semi-finals,

0:11:29 > 0:11:32but let's take a look at their Mutt Measurements

0:11:32 > 0:11:35to see if any of them have the edge in today's challenge.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38First we have Squib,

0:11:38 > 0:11:40the four-year-old border collie-kelpie cross.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Kelpies are Australian sheepdogs

0:11:43 > 0:11:45and they're usually very active,

0:11:45 > 0:11:47and Squib is no exception.

0:11:47 > 0:11:48He's very excitable

0:11:48 > 0:11:50and loves nothing more than to play with a ball.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54So will Squib show off his ball skills at Showtime?

0:11:54 > 0:11:57Or will he simply take time out to play?

0:11:57 > 0:12:01Now, Jake is a four-year-old Patterdale terrier.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04He adores treats and is really playful

0:12:04 > 0:12:07and never turns down a hug from Hannah. Aw!

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Patterdales are usually great watchdogs

0:12:10 > 0:12:12and they love a good challenge.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15So if Jake is true to his breed then he should be great

0:12:15 > 0:12:18at keeping his eye on the ball in this challenge.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Finally, we have JJ, the one-year-old border collie.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24JJ loves to learn new tricks

0:12:24 > 0:12:27and she loves to do agility,

0:12:27 > 0:12:29which could prove to be very handy for today's trick.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Border collies are often extremely intelligent

0:12:32 > 0:12:36and they tend to have a strong herding instinct.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39So tackling some treibball should be no problem for this clever canine.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46Five days later and the teams are back

0:12:46 > 0:12:49for more training with Ashleigh and our expert dog trainer Steve.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54- How are we doing? - Hello. We're doing good.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56OK, show me how it's going.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01- Squib, push.- Good, good, good.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03That's OK, that's looking good.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07That IS looking good. Squib is now pushing the ball.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Make sure that Squib goes exactly opposite the ball

0:13:10 > 0:13:13before you start asking him to push towards you,

0:13:13 > 0:13:14because the more distance that we add,

0:13:14 > 0:13:16the more likely we're going to go off course.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20- So keep practising.- Good! Well done. Right, Hannah and Jake...

0:13:20 > 0:13:21- Shall we take a look?- Jake...

0:13:21 > 0:13:23Jake, wait... Push, push, push.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Wow! Jake's pushing the ball now too!

0:13:26 > 0:13:27OK, that's nice.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30But I want Jake to know exactly why he's getting that treat.

0:13:30 > 0:13:31When he got the treat then,

0:13:31 > 0:13:33it was when he came round the side of the ball.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35Make sure that your reward word happens

0:13:35 > 0:13:36when he's the opposite side of the ball

0:13:36 > 0:13:39- when he's pushing it nice and straight towards you.- OK.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43- Good, good. OK.- Now, last but not least, we have Freddie and JJ.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46- So how has it been going? - It's been going really well.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49- Yeah?- Pushing the ball.- That is what I like to hear. Shall we take a look?

0:13:49 > 0:13:51- With her nose?- Yeah.- Nice.

0:13:51 > 0:13:52Hey!

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Push it, push it.

0:13:55 > 0:13:56This is amazing!

0:13:56 > 0:13:59All three dogs can now push the ball.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01I'll tell you what, let's just see if she can push the ball back to us.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03- Push it, push it.- Go, go, go!

0:14:03 > 0:14:05Nice, good girl.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08You've made good steps. I want to see a little bit of distance.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11In fact, I want them all to have a little bit of distance.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Right, if you just stop training for a moment,

0:14:13 > 0:14:15we're going to introduce the next few stages.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17And it's going to be about adding distance initially,

0:14:17 > 0:14:20because come Showtime you're going to need to send your dog out

0:14:20 > 0:14:24from 10 metres away from you to go behind the ball,

0:14:24 > 0:14:27and then you're going to be stood in your goal,

0:14:27 > 0:14:30and the dog needs to push the ball all the way back to you.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34So the first stage we're going to do is send them away from you,

0:14:34 > 0:14:37get them to wait, make sure they're nice and straight,

0:14:37 > 0:14:41and then use your touch, your push command

0:14:41 > 0:14:43to push the ball back towards you.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46OK. So...if your dog's not in the right position,

0:14:46 > 0:14:49don't ask him to push, because he'll get some bad habits

0:14:49 > 0:14:51and your ball's going to end up over there somewhere.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53Ashleigh's going to look after you from here on in,

0:14:53 > 0:14:55- and I'll catch you later. Does that make sense?- Yeah.- Cool.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58- OK. See you later. Work hard.- Bye.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00Let's start with you, then, Freddie.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03- Shall we try and build that distance up?- Stay.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06Push it, push it, push it.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08OK, come back, come back. Where's that ball going?

0:15:08 > 0:15:10Looks like it's heading for the plants!

0:15:10 > 0:15:14If it happens at Showtime, that could be a disaster!

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Right, your ball just went over there,

0:15:18 > 0:15:20and do you know how much time that's going to waste?

0:15:20 > 0:15:21So let's try that again.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23Now, the first time she did it, she pushed it straight.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26So I think give her a treat for that first push at the moment, OK?

0:15:26 > 0:15:31- Push.- Good, good girl. Well done. Carry on now.- JJ.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34Hannah and Jake, how are you getting on?

0:15:34 > 0:15:37- Good, I'm building up my distance now.- Good. good. Let's take a look.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41- Go back the other way, then. - Jake, come here, come here.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Oh, dear! Jake seems to have lost interest.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46- Come on. - Right, have a bit of fun with him,

0:15:46 > 0:15:48because he seems to be getting a bit bored at the moment.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50- Come here! - Ask him to do a trick maybe.

0:15:50 > 0:15:51Ready? Spin!

0:15:51 > 0:15:54Good, give him a treat. Well done, give him loads of praise.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56Good boy!

0:15:56 > 0:15:58Now, when you are training a dog,

0:15:58 > 0:16:01you have to make sure you don't overtrain your dog, OK?

0:16:01 > 0:16:02- Shall we try with the ball now again? - Come on!

0:16:02 > 0:16:05- So loads of fun... Good boy! - Good boy! Sit, sit, sit.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08Sit. Wait, wait, wait. Push, push...

0:16:08 > 0:16:11- No!- What Jake's doing is he's deciding when he gets his treat, OK?

0:16:11 > 0:16:14So he pushes it once or twice and then goes, "I want my treat now."

0:16:14 > 0:16:17You need to make sure that you decide when you give him that treat.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20Make sure you give it loads and loads of fun.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22I'll leave you to it.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Oliver and Squib, then. How's Squib getting on?

0:16:25 > 0:16:26- Good.- Yeah? Shall we take a look?

0:16:29 > 0:16:31Squibby, push.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34- Yes. Good boy.- Good! Well done.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36Wow! Squib pushed that perfectly.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38Looks like Steve's advice has paid off.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40..And not actually pushing it, OK?

0:16:40 > 0:16:43So he's doing it in a straight line, he's actually perfectly straight,

0:16:43 > 0:16:47so that's really good. Now start just walking away. Shall we try it again?

0:16:47 > 0:16:48Wait.

0:16:51 > 0:16:52Squibby, push.

0:16:53 > 0:16:54Push!

0:16:54 > 0:16:58Did you notice that Squib pushed it, pushed it, pushed it,

0:16:58 > 0:17:00and then because you were standing here,

0:17:00 > 0:17:01obviously he couldn't push it any more,

0:17:01 > 0:17:05so he went, "OK, I'm finished now." And then you gave him his treat

0:17:05 > 0:17:06for actually coming round the ball.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08You need to quickly get him out of that habit, OK?

0:17:08 > 0:17:12- So you decide when he gets his treat and when he's been good.- Yeah.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14Well done. Right, guys, you've all done really, really well.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16Try and practise as much as possible,

0:17:16 > 0:17:20but make sure your dogs don't get bored of the challenge, OK?

0:17:20 > 0:17:22What you also need to start working on

0:17:22 > 0:17:26is your dog actually going behind the ball, and bringing it to you.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29So it's a lot of work, but I'm sure you can all do it.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31OK, I'll see you back here for Showtime and good luck!

0:17:31 > 0:17:33- Bye!- Bye.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38If you want to be able to play treibball with your dog,

0:17:38 > 0:17:40then here are five steps on how to do it.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46Encourage your dog to touch the ball with their nose.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48And as soon as they do, reward big.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53Give your touch command a name

0:17:53 > 0:17:56and don't reward if your dog uses their paw.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59Put the ball between you and your dog

0:17:59 > 0:18:00and encourage them

0:18:00 > 0:18:03to only touch the part of the ball directly opposite you.

0:18:05 > 0:18:06Begin to move backwards

0:18:06 > 0:18:10so your dog gets the idea that it's pushing the ball towards you.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15Put your dog in a stay and place the ball in front of them.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19Take a few steps back, then ask your dog to touch.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Once your dog has got the hang of this,

0:18:21 > 0:18:23train them to go around the ball

0:18:23 > 0:18:26and eventually you should be able to send your dog out

0:18:26 > 0:18:28to bring you the ball from 10 metres away.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32Today's session didn't go as well as I'd planned.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35He wasn't as interested or excited by it any more,

0:18:35 > 0:18:37but we did at the beginning build up some distance.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39I think I could make it to the final

0:18:39 > 0:18:41because Squib's getting the hang of it

0:18:41 > 0:18:44and he's getting the training and picking it up really quickly.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47I'm not sure who my main competition is,

0:18:47 > 0:18:49because I feel that Hannah and Oliver are at the same stage.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55Hi, guys. Today we're going to be showing you

0:18:55 > 0:18:57how to teach your dog the head-down,

0:18:57 > 0:19:00and we are going to be using our lovely clicker as well.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02Wondering what a clicker is? Well, listen up.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04- CLICK! - Dog trainers use a clicky thing

0:19:04 > 0:19:07to tell their dog he's done something right.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09They click, give a treat,

0:19:09 > 0:19:12and the dog soon learns that a click means a treat is on its way.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17Now, to start off with the dog will have to know the lie-down first.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19So you're going to have your treat in your hand,

0:19:19 > 0:19:22preferably the right one, and the clicker in your left one.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24And all you're going to do is coach the dog

0:19:24 > 0:19:25and out the treat just in front of them

0:19:25 > 0:19:28so they have to place their chin on to the ground.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30Shall we give it a go? Ready, Pudsey?

0:19:30 > 0:19:32Head down. Head.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36Good boy! Well done. That's good.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38So after you've done that over and over again,

0:19:38 > 0:19:40then you can start bringing your hand away

0:19:40 > 0:19:43and then that's when you have to be really, really patient,

0:19:43 > 0:19:46because you've got to wait until your dog puts the head down on the floor.

0:19:46 > 0:19:47Shall we give it a go?

0:19:47 > 0:19:48Head down.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51CLICK! Good boy!

0:19:51 > 0:19:55Making sure as soon as your dog puts their head down on to the ground,

0:19:55 > 0:19:58you click or you praise and treat straight away.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00And then all it is is lengthening the time

0:20:00 > 0:20:03that you actually give the treat or the click.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05Head down.

0:20:07 > 0:20:11CLICK! Good boy! Well done. Clever lad.

0:20:11 > 0:20:11Good luck!

0:20:17 > 0:20:20Being a dog owner is loads of fun,

0:20:20 > 0:20:23but it also has its fair share of responsibilities.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26Isn't that right, Puds? WHINING

0:20:26 > 0:20:27Take a look at this.

0:20:31 > 0:20:37Over 100,000 dogs get lost in the UK every year.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40but if they had a cool thing called a microchip,

0:20:40 > 0:20:42it would help them to be found again.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45A microchip is as small as a grain of rice,

0:20:45 > 0:20:49and it's inserted into a dog's shoulder like this.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53Each microchip has a unique number,

0:20:53 > 0:20:57and when a dog gets lost all a vet or a rescue centre has to do

0:20:57 > 0:21:02is pass a scanner over the dog and the number comes up on a screen.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07They will then see the dog owner's contact details

0:21:07 > 0:21:10and can get in touch to tell them that they've found their dog.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Pretty clever, eh?

0:21:19 > 0:21:2212 days of treibball training is over.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24And after making it this far,

0:21:24 > 0:21:27two of our teams will have to leave the competition.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35So, who has got what it takes to make it through to the final?

0:21:35 > 0:21:38I'm feeling quite confident about Showtime

0:21:38 > 0:21:41because he has worked really well in his training.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43Who will keep their eye on the ball?

0:21:43 > 0:21:46It does mean a lot to me to make it through to the final

0:21:46 > 0:21:50because I've been constant the whole way through that I could do it

0:21:50 > 0:21:51and get through the next round.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55And who will be left watching from the sidelines?

0:21:56 > 0:21:59I'm worried that he might get distracted

0:21:59 > 0:22:02or push the ball in the wrong direction.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05It's time to find out.

0:22:10 > 0:22:14It's Showtime for our fantastic treibball semi-finalists.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17And this is where it's all going to take place.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20One by one our trainers will stand between the two cones,

0:22:20 > 0:22:22they will send their dogs out to fetch the ball

0:22:22 > 0:22:23which will be 10 metres away.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26Whichever dog fetches their ball in the quickest time

0:22:26 > 0:22:27will be today's winner.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30Now, Steve, I'm so excited for this one.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32When it comes to Showtime, do you think it's going to be close

0:22:32 > 0:22:34or is there a clear winner?

0:22:34 > 0:22:35They've all had little inconsistencies

0:22:35 > 0:22:37that they've had to iron out.

0:22:37 > 0:22:38And as soon as they've overcome one problem,

0:22:38 > 0:22:41another nasty little problem's popped its head up.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43But they're all going to put in 100%, I've no doubt.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46- Shall we go and watch some treibball, then?- Let's do it!- Let's go!

0:22:48 > 0:22:51The clock will start once the dog crosses the line.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54But if any of the trainers go past those cones

0:22:54 > 0:22:55to join their dog on the course,

0:22:55 > 0:22:58they will incur a 30-second time penalty.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01First up, it's Freddie and JJ.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04This team have made steady progress,

0:23:04 > 0:23:05but when we last saw them

0:23:05 > 0:23:10Freddie was struggling to get JJ to push the ball in a straight line.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13Have they managed to overcome this problem before it's too late?

0:23:17 > 0:23:19And they're off!

0:23:19 > 0:23:21And Freddie has decided to run alongside JJ.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26Will that help JJ push the ball in a straight line?

0:23:26 > 0:23:27- Push, push, push.- Yes!

0:23:27 > 0:23:29But, oh, JJ's got distracted!

0:23:29 > 0:23:33They're back on course, but they've lost precious seconds.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36And they've done it

0:23:36 > 0:23:38with an impressive time of 17 seconds.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41However, a 30-second penalty will be added

0:23:41 > 0:23:43for Freddie running on the course.

0:23:43 > 0:23:44Which makes their final time...

0:23:50 > 0:23:52Next up, it's Oliver and Squib.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56At the start, Squib was biting the ball

0:23:56 > 0:23:58and Oliver lacked enthusiasm,

0:23:58 > 0:23:59but when we last saw this team

0:23:59 > 0:24:03they were well on their way to being terrific at treibball.

0:24:03 > 0:24:04Has practice made perfect

0:24:04 > 0:24:07and can they secure that precious place in the final?

0:24:12 > 0:24:13And they're off!

0:24:13 > 0:24:15And Oliver looks to be staying behind the line.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17Get behind it. Push!

0:24:17 > 0:24:18This is incredible.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22Squib is using his nose to direct the wall all the way back to Oliver.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24Come on, push!

0:24:24 > 0:24:26Come on, push!

0:24:26 > 0:24:28And they've done it!

0:24:28 > 0:24:31Oliver and Squib completed the course perfectly!

0:24:31 > 0:24:34They did it in an unbelievable...

0:24:35 > 0:24:38And because Oliver stayed behind the line

0:24:38 > 0:24:40they didn't incur any penalties.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Last but not least, it's Hannah and Jake.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48This team have been close competition to Oliver and Squib

0:24:48 > 0:24:49throughout training.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53But Hannah can struggle to hold Jake's attention.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56Can she keep Jake's focus one more time

0:24:56 > 0:24:58and will they scoop that special spot in the final?

0:24:59 > 0:25:01Go, go!

0:25:01 > 0:25:03It's a quick start for this team

0:25:03 > 0:25:05and Hannah has chosen to run with Jake.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08They look super focused and fast!

0:25:08 > 0:25:10Push, push! Good boy! Good boy!

0:25:10 > 0:25:14They managed to complete the course in a super speedy...

0:25:15 > 0:25:18..but Hannah will incur a time penalty for being on the course,

0:25:18 > 0:25:21so how has that affected the results?

0:25:25 > 0:25:30Well, guys, I must say that that was an incredibly difficult challenge,

0:25:30 > 0:25:32and you all did absolutely amazing,

0:25:32 > 0:25:37but I can now reveal that the winner of our semi-final,

0:25:37 > 0:25:40and going through to our grand final is...

0:25:40 > 0:25:44BARKING

0:25:45 > 0:25:47..Oliver and Squib!

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Hannah and Jake may have completed the course the quickest,

0:25:52 > 0:25:55but their time penalty pushed them into second place

0:25:55 > 0:25:57behind Oliver and Squib.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01Now, you're going through to our grand final, so well done.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04- That was close. - It was amazing, wasn't it?

0:26:04 > 0:26:06Next time on Who Let the Dogs Out? three more teams

0:26:06 > 0:26:09will be competing for their place in the all-important grand final.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11It's going to be fantastic. Don't miss it.
