0:00:59 > 0:01:01# Who let the dogs out?

0:01:03 > 0:01:04# Who let the dogs out?

0:01:06 > 0:01:08# Who let the dogs out? #

0:01:10 > 0:01:14Now, as you know, hundreds of young dog trainers from all over the

0:01:14 > 0:01:19UK were desperate to come here to the Dog House, but only 27 made it.

0:01:19 > 0:01:20We need long-legged dogs for this one.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24Today, Max and Boycie, Alicia and Ellie and Oliver and Squib

0:01:24 > 0:01:28are going to be jumping straight into a very exciting challenge.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30So let's find out why I chose them.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39At the Try-Outs, dozens of dogs and their trainers were hoping to

0:01:39 > 0:01:41impress Ashleigh enough to get to the Dog House...

0:01:43 > 0:01:44Woo! Well done!

0:01:45 > 0:01:48..and to get their paws on the ultimate prize,

0:01:48 > 0:01:50the Top Dog Trainer trophy.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55- The competition was fierce. - What a catch!

0:01:56 > 0:01:59This first team were among the chosen few.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01- Take it away!- Left paw.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Nine-year-old Max and his Labrador, Boycie, are from the West Midlands.

0:02:07 > 0:02:12- And they really impressed Ashleigh. - Good. Good.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16- He's got high jump on him, hasn't he? - Stay. Come on, then. Go!

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Oh, he skimmed it! But he got over, so that was brilliant. Well done.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25- Hello.- Hi. - Can you introduce yourselves, please?

0:02:25 > 0:02:28- I'm Alicia and this is my dog, Ellie.- Oh. Well, she's very pretty.

0:02:28 > 0:02:33- This team from Northern Ireland did not disappoint.- Go round, Ellie.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35- Good girl.- Good.- Lie.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40- Good girl.- Very nice.- Up. Jump.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42- Good girl.- That was so easy!

0:02:42 > 0:02:46- Can you wave bye bye? Good girl.- Good.

0:02:46 > 0:02:47- Well done.- Come on, girl.- Bye!

0:02:50 > 0:02:52- Hello.- Hello.- Wave.

0:02:53 > 0:02:58- Oliver is 11 and his collie-cross Kelpie, Squib, is four.- Good.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00And they're from Middlesex.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04They wowed Ashleigh with some unusual tricks.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07I would never, ever trust Pudsey with my mobile phone!

0:03:07 > 0:03:13It's pretty much that. Good boy! And... And now he's gone! And...

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Oh, he's popped it! Excellent!

0:03:21 > 0:03:24It's Training Day 1 and time for Ashleigh to introduce

0:03:24 > 0:03:28the trainers to our dog expert, Steve, who will reveal their stunt.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30Good boy!

0:03:30 > 0:03:34- Hello, guys! CHILDREN:- Hello.- Now, Steve, this is Oliver and Squib.

0:03:34 > 0:03:39- Hey, Oliver.- Alicia and Ellie. - Hey, Alicia.- And Max and Boycie.

0:03:39 > 0:03:40How you doing, Max?

0:03:40 > 0:03:43I made sure that I picked quite tall dogs that can reach

0:03:43 > 0:03:46- a pretty good height.- OK. Perfect. So you've guessed it!

0:03:46 > 0:03:49We're going to be doing the high jump. Fantastic stunt.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52It's all about putting as much confidence into your dog

0:03:52 > 0:03:54as possible.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57For this stunt, your dogs are going to have to learn how to jump

0:03:57 > 0:04:01over a high jump without knocking off the top bar.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05At Showtime, the bar will get higher and higher.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08The dog that clears the highest top bar will be the winner

0:04:08 > 0:04:10and make into the next round.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14Now, the high jump, it might not have too many steps when you are training

0:04:14 > 0:04:17your dogs, but it takes a lot of time and effort

0:04:17 > 0:04:19and motivation from you guys.

0:04:19 > 0:04:24OK. So, our first step is to introduce your dog to the jump.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26Nice, low, simple height.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Then I want you to start running with your dog.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Put a little bit of speed into the exercise early on.

0:04:32 > 0:04:33Once they're doing that,

0:04:33 > 0:04:37then you can gradually add more bars as you go along, raising the height.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40And then, put the bars at different heights so your dog learns to

0:04:40 > 0:04:44actually look and evaluate the jump that's in front of them.

0:04:44 > 0:04:45Don't let them get too tired.

0:04:45 > 0:04:50Remember, it's simple but it's not particularly easy.

0:04:50 > 0:04:51We're going to shoot off.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53You guys practise with Ashleigh, and we'll see how you get on.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- See you later!- CHILDREN:- Bye!- Bye!

0:04:56 > 0:04:58Right, guys. I can't wait to get started!

0:04:58 > 0:05:00Shall we go? Let's do it, then.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05When the trick was revealed, I was very excited

0:05:05 > 0:05:07'cos I wanted to do something to do with jumping.'

0:05:07 > 0:05:09What we're going to do is put him in a sit here,

0:05:09 > 0:05:12put him in a wait or a stay.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14You're going to walk round the other side of the hurdle

0:05:14 > 0:05:16and then call him over it, OK?

0:05:16 > 0:05:17OK. Stay.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21Stay. Come on, then. Come on, Boycie.

0:05:21 > 0:05:22- No!- Oh, almost!

0:05:22 > 0:05:28- Boycie! You're meant to jump OVER it, not round it!- Sit. Sit. Stay.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31- Come on, Boycie. Come on, Boycie. - Good boy. Well done. Loads of praise.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34I liked how you put him a little bit closer and you helped him

0:05:34 > 0:05:36out a lot more that time. So that's really good. Shall we try again?

0:05:36 > 0:05:40Good work there from Max. And Boycie seems pretty pleased with himself.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42- How will Alicia and Ellie get on? - Over to your hurdle over there.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46It's really exciting to be at the Dog House. To meet everybody

0:05:46 > 0:05:48and to meet Ashleigh and Pudsey's really exciting.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50Alicia and Ellie, and exactly the same.

0:05:50 > 0:05:51You're going to put her in a wait

0:05:51 > 0:05:54- and then go round the other side of the hurdle.- Wait.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59- Come on, jump. Yes! Good girl. - Good. Well done.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02- Looks like Ellie's a great jumper already.- Do that once more.- Ellie!

0:06:02 > 0:06:04So this time, you're going to be running with her, OK?

0:06:04 > 0:06:08- Trying to pick up some speed.- Ready? Go on, jump. Yes!- Yeah! Well done.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Speedy Ellie! Even Boycie's checking out the competition!

0:06:11 > 0:06:15Try and keep Boycie your side, thank you very much! That was brilliant.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19- Well done.- Well done, Alicia and Ellie! Next up, Oliver and Squib.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23To be here at the Dog House is really nice cos it's just

0:06:23 > 0:06:25surprising that I got here.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Oliver, only the best dog trainers make it to the Dog House,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31so you must have done something right!

0:06:31 > 0:06:34- Squibby, come! - Good. Well done. Clever.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36So, like Steve said, we're going to build it up now,

0:06:36 > 0:06:42- and this time, you're going to run with Squib, OK?- OK. Squibby!

0:06:42 > 0:06:43- Good.- Good boy.- Well done.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46Oliver and Squib are a great team. Oliver just needs to start

0:06:46 > 0:06:49believing in himself and Squib.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Don't ever be afraid of being really enthusiastic and loud,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55just so that Squib knows that what he's just done is what you

0:06:55 > 0:06:58wanted him to do, OK? Good. Well done.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Our trainers today are going to learn that you should never, ever,

0:07:01 > 0:07:05ever be afraid of taking a step back when you are training your dog.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09For instance, if our dogs actually jump the hurdle at one height,

0:07:09 > 0:07:12it doesn't necessarily mean they're going to do it at that height again.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16So you might just have to lower that bar and then lower it again.

0:07:16 > 0:07:17Right. Next time I see you,

0:07:17 > 0:07:21I want you to raise that bar up a couple of notches if you can, OK?

0:07:21 > 0:07:25- I will see you in a bit. Bye! CHILDREN:- Bye!

0:07:25 > 0:07:28It's a jump in the right direction for all our three teams.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30- Ellie, jump. Yes! - Ellie's off to a great start.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Let's hope Boycie and Squib can keep up.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Using toys is a great way to train your dogs.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46However, not all dogs enjoy sharing them, do they, Puds?

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Mm. Here's some dogs who hate to share.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57When you're a dog, you've got to protect your property.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01Even a scrap of old fabric can cause a serious tug-of-war!

0:08:04 > 0:08:07So here are some tips on holding on to your possessions.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11Tip one: Make yourself as heavy as possible and don't let go!

0:08:13 > 0:08:17Tip two: Small thieves are more easily defeated than large ones...

0:08:19 > 0:08:21..unless they own a monster truck.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Then, I'm afraid, you're in trouble.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29Make sure you're standing on something stable.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31The floor is always best.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34If you think you're about to lose your favourite sock,

0:08:34 > 0:08:36get a friend to distract your opponent.

0:08:38 > 0:08:43And finally, when all is lost, steal someone else's toys and run!

0:08:48 > 0:08:50Still to come:

0:08:50 > 0:08:54We learn all about mountain rescue dogs, and the bar is raised

0:08:54 > 0:08:57when the teams battle to reach the semi-finals.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04Training's in full flow,

0:09:04 > 0:09:08- and Ashleigh's back to check how the teams are getting on.- Hi, guys.

0:09:08 > 0:09:13- Just hold it there a minute. How's it all going? CHILDREN:- Good.- Good.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16Now, I do notice that all of your jumps have got higher,

0:09:16 > 0:09:21- so that is superb! So how have you been getting on with Squib?- Good.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24- Good. Let's take a look, then.- Squibby! Up.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27Good start there from Oliver and Squib. What does Ashleigh think?

0:09:27 > 0:09:31Now, all I would say is that you are stopping about here, so Squib

0:09:31 > 0:09:35is sort of clearing his jump and then he's coming straight back to you, OK?

0:09:35 > 0:09:36And you want him to keep going

0:09:36 > 0:09:39- so he has momentum to get over that jump, OK?- OK.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42- And shall we put a couple more on for him?- OK.- Yeah?

0:09:42 > 0:09:45The bar's getting higher. Can Squib jump it?

0:09:45 > 0:09:48- Squibby! Come on.- Good. - Good boy.- Well done.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Like Steve said, I'm going to take another one down, just

0:09:50 > 0:09:52so it builds his confidence back up, OK?

0:09:52 > 0:09:55But keep playing around with them, up, down, up, down.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59- And carry on running. Don't be lazy! Good. Well done.- Squibby!

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Some sound advice there from Ashleigh.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Looks like Oliver has some work to do on his technique.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07- So Alicia and Ellie, how have you been getting on?- Quite well, yeah.

0:10:07 > 0:10:12- Good, good. Off you go!- Come on, Ellie. Jump. Yes!- Good.- Wow!

0:10:12 > 0:10:14Well done, Ellie. But can she jump even higher?

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Right, so we're going to just put this one on.

0:10:18 > 0:10:23- There we go.- Ellie, sit.- Let's do another one, then, with Ellie.- Wait.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27- Jump. Yeah!- Ooh, so close!

0:10:27 > 0:10:29This high jump malarkey is harder than it looks!

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Carry on just doing that height.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34As soon as she gets it once, then go back down, OK?

0:10:34 > 0:10:37All I want you to do is just rest Ellie for a little bit now then.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41So Max and Boycie. This time, I actually want you to run with Boycie.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43OK. Come on, then, Boycie. Come on, Boycie.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47- He's got a good spring in his step, hasn't he?- He sure has, Ashleigh!

0:10:47 > 0:10:49Good progress from this team.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52But always make sure that you put him in a good wait

0:10:52 > 0:10:55- so he's facing your jump, OK?- OK.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58Well, all three of you have done absolutely brilliantly

0:10:58 > 0:11:01with your dogs. I want you to carry on throughout the whole day

0:11:01 > 0:11:05but make sure you are resting your dogs loads and loads, OK?

0:11:05 > 0:11:06- Bye! CHILDREN:- Bye!

0:11:08 > 0:11:11'The best bit about my training session'

0:11:11 > 0:11:13was when I started getting

0:11:13 > 0:11:17'onto three or four stick jumps, and then when I started doing five.'

0:11:17 > 0:11:20I think my main competition is probably Max and Boycie

0:11:20 > 0:11:23because I saw that they're getting quite high jumps.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26My training plan is just small steps.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29'I think my main competition is Alicia'

0:11:29 > 0:11:33and Ellie cos they're picking it up really fast.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Boycie, Ellie and Squib are all different dogs, but let's see

0:11:36 > 0:11:41what it is about them that makes them amazing in their own way.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44Two-year-old Boycie is a Labrador Retriever and is named after

0:11:44 > 0:11:48a character in a famous TV series called Only Fools and Horses.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50Ask your grandparents, kids!

0:11:50 > 0:11:55Labs are very active dogs that love to jump, and Boycie is no exception.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58So if Boycie can put his love of jumping into this challenge,

0:11:58 > 0:12:00he might just reach a place in the semi-finals.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06Ellie is a one-year-old Border Collie-Irish Wolfhound cross.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10Both these breeds are usually very friendly, and Ellie is no exception.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Wolfhounds are the tallest dogs in the world

0:12:13 > 0:12:17and often grow to around 86 centimetres high.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19That's the size of a small pony!

0:12:19 > 0:12:22The question is, will those long legs make Ellie the early

0:12:22 > 0:12:25favourite to win the high jump at Showtime?

0:12:25 > 0:12:26Mm-hm!

0:12:26 > 0:12:30Squib is a five-year-old Border Collie-Kelpie cross.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32Kelpies are Australian sheepdogs.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35Collies and Kelpies have a lot of stamina and can easily run

0:12:35 > 0:12:40up to 60 kilometres a day, which is further than the London Marathon!

0:12:40 > 0:12:43Like many sheepdogs, Squib is very excitable,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46so let's hope he can stay focused on today's trick.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54It's Day 2 of training, and the teams are back at the Dog House.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Let's find out if they've raised the bar.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03Well, I can see that you've all got much, much higher.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- Look at those bars! Look how high they are! Oh!- How are we doing?

0:13:06 > 0:13:10- That was energetic!- It's my jumping head on today! Come on.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12- Good work, good work! - They winning? Let's have a look.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15So, shall we have Alicia and Ellie first, then?

0:13:15 > 0:13:20- Pow!- Wow! That was incredibly high! I'm amazed.- That's good.

0:13:20 > 0:13:21One more now for me.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23SHE BARKS

0:13:23 > 0:13:27Encourage her over. When she lands, then throw the ball.

0:13:27 > 0:13:28- We'll go for nine.- Jump.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32- Yes! Good.- Good girl.- Good girl. - Fantastic. Brilliant.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35The only other thing I want you to do is make sure your reward's

0:13:35 > 0:13:36over the jump, not round the side.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Keep everything, all the good stuff, down the middle. Perfect!

0:13:39 > 0:13:42- Right. Oliver and Squib, then. - Right, Oliver.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46Oops! I don't think THAT was meant to happen.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Let's lower it down a little bit. Let's concentrate on the technique.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52If the technique is good, then we'll concentrate on the height.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54- Squibby, come on. Up! - Oh, perfect!- Good boy.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57- Steve's advice seems to have done the trick.- OK. That's brilliant.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59One little thing I'd like you to do, Oliver.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01Make sure your left hand is not in your pouch.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03If there's any attention on your body,

0:14:03 > 0:14:05I want it to be on your right hand cos that's nearest the jump.

0:14:05 > 0:14:06Any good stuff here

0:14:06 > 0:14:09and Squib's going to kind of come round a little bit angled.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11- Pop Squib back on the lead.- Good. - Well done.- Well done.

0:14:11 > 0:14:16- Right. Max and Boycie, then.- Sit. Come on then, Boycie. Up!

0:14:16 > 0:14:20No! Boycie's back to his old tricks again and going round the jump.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23- Has he got a little bit of a sit-stay?- Yeah, he can do that.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Do a sit-stay. Relax. Pop this pole here.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28HE BARKS

0:14:28 > 0:14:31- Let's see if that's enough of a visual barrier.- OK.

0:14:31 > 0:14:35- Keep your momentum up nice and high. - Stay.- Ready? Hoooo... Up!- Yeah!

0:14:35 > 0:14:38- Well done!- Perfect! - Loads of praise.- Good, good.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41I think, because he's got a bit of a bias to be left-handed,

0:14:41 > 0:14:45you can complement that, help him out, by you being on this side.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47He wants to go that way,

0:14:47 > 0:14:50but his attention and the good stuff is on this way and his best mate.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53Hopefully, we'll meet in the middle and we'll get him nice and straight.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55- Really, really good, gang. Perfect! - Good. Right, guys.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Do you want to just come round so Steve can explain the next stage?

0:14:58 > 0:15:01I want you just to concentrate on your technique.

0:15:01 > 0:15:02Don't go any higher

0:15:02 > 0:15:05until you're perfectly happy that your technique is spot-on.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08Then, just going to keep adding bar after bar.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11If you're successful, do a couple of jumps at that height then add a bar.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15However, the take-home message really is if you knock a bar,

0:15:15 > 0:15:16go down at least two bars.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18Just build up that confidence of you

0:15:18 > 0:15:21and your dog and then start building the height again.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Ashleigh's going to look after you from here on in. See you later!

0:15:24 > 0:15:27- CHILDREN:- Bye!- Bye!- Brilliant advice from our expert, Steve.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29Let's see the teams put it into practice.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31We're going to go back up again, but this time,

0:15:31 > 0:15:33I still want you to give her a bit more of a run-up, OK?

0:15:33 > 0:15:35Come on. Come here. Go on, jump.

0:15:35 > 0:15:40- Yes!- Good. Well done.- Ellie's jumps are amazing. Can anyone beat that?

0:15:40 > 0:15:43- Squibby, come on.- Yeah! Loads of praise.- Good boy.- Well done.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47Remember, enthusiasm. You've got to be so enthusiastic.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51Pretty good, Squib. But Oliver needs to work on his enthusiasm.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55- Time to see how Max and Boycie are doing.- Sit. Come on, Boycie. Over.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59Good. Run, run, run, run, run! Good. Well done. That was much better.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01Good progress, Max and Boycie.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06Now, I'm going to see you back here in just under a week's time

0:16:06 > 0:16:07and it will be Showtime, OK?

0:16:07 > 0:16:10So make sure you practise, practise, practise

0:16:10 > 0:16:14- and give your dogs plenty of rest. Bye! CHILDREN:- Bye!

0:16:14 > 0:16:17High jumping is more than just jumping over a bar.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20It takes real skill and a lot of patient training,

0:16:20 > 0:16:24so here are four steps to teaching your dog how to do it.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29Step one: Begin by encouraging your dog to jump over low jumps.

0:16:31 > 0:16:32Step two:

0:16:32 > 0:16:36As you start to raise the bar, teach your dog to take a run-up.

0:16:38 > 0:16:39Step three:

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Find the highest jump that your dog can clear consistently.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Occasionally, lower it to build their confidence.

0:16:48 > 0:16:49Step four:

0:16:49 > 0:16:51Keep testing how high your dog can jump,

0:16:51 > 0:16:55but remember to lower the jump whenever they knock down a bar.

0:16:58 > 0:17:04My training plan is to do it every day before school and after school,

0:17:04 > 0:17:07'and just do as much as I can in between then.'

0:17:07 > 0:17:10Yeah, I'm feeling quite confident about Showtime cos I know that

0:17:10 > 0:17:13she can do the jumps, but it's just about training over the next week.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16Jump. Yes! Ellie!

0:17:16 > 0:17:20My main competition is still Alicia and Ellie

0:17:20 > 0:17:22cos they're getting

0:17:22 > 0:17:24'quite a lot of height on their jumps.'

0:17:29 > 0:17:33I absolutely love teaching Pudsey new tricks, and today, we're going

0:17:33 > 0:17:36to be showing you how to teach your dog to do the arm weave.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Now, for this trick, you're going to need lots and lots of treats

0:17:38 > 0:17:41or toys, depending on what your dog absolutely loves.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45Come on, then, Puds! Puds! Good boy. Yay! Good lad! Right. Sit.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47So, for this one, you're going

0:17:47 > 0:17:49to have to get down onto your hands and knees. You ready, Puds?

0:17:49 > 0:17:50What's this?

0:17:50 > 0:17:53Now, you're going to start with your dog on the left-hand side.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55You're going to have two treats, one in each hand.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58And you're going to place your right hand onto the ground

0:17:58 > 0:18:00with your left hand with your treat.

0:18:00 > 0:18:01And with your left hand,

0:18:01 > 0:18:04you're just going to put it round the hand that's on the floor.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06Good! Well done.

0:18:06 > 0:18:07Now, once I've done that,

0:18:07 > 0:18:10you're going to start on the other side, putting your left hand

0:18:10 > 0:18:11down onto the ground,

0:18:11 > 0:18:14and with your right hand going around your arm.

0:18:14 > 0:18:15Good! Well done.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18And once they're confident with both sides, you're going

0:18:18 > 0:18:21to try and put them together. So right arm, down. Left hand, treat.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25There we go! Good boy. Left hand, down.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28Right arm, treat. Good! Well done. Clever!

0:18:28 > 0:18:30Once your dog starts getting the hang of that,

0:18:30 > 0:18:32then you can start doing two at a time.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35So you don't give them the treat for that first arm.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37So right arm down. Lure your dog through.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40And then lure your dog through and then give them the treat.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42Good! Well done.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45And this is the point where you can start bringing in your command.

0:18:45 > 0:18:50So for this, I call it arms. Puds, arms! Good. Arms! Good boy.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Arms! Good. Arms! Good boy. Clever!

0:18:53 > 0:18:55And as you saw then, I wasn't luring him around.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58So when your dog eventually gets the idea, you can

0:18:58 > 0:19:00start bringing your hands away slowly. Good boy.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03Try and give this a go at home. Good lad! Well done.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12People say that they would be lost without their lovable dogs,

0:19:12 > 0:19:14but for some people, they truly would be.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17Check out these life-saving search and rescue dogs.

0:19:17 > 0:19:21# Rescue me Oh take me in your arms... #

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Most dogs have a good sense of smell, but some

0:19:24 > 0:19:29use their noses for more than just sniffing out their next treat.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32These clever dogs work with their handlers to look for lost or

0:19:32 > 0:19:35missing people in the mountains and hills of the UK.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40Apparently, dogs' noses are 1,000 times more sensitive than

0:19:40 > 0:19:43human noses, so they can sniff out the person they're

0:19:43 > 0:19:45searching for really quickly.

0:19:45 > 0:19:50Nowadays, with GPS and things like that, mobile phones,

0:19:50 > 0:19:52there's less people actually getting lost,

0:19:52 > 0:19:55but when they do get lost, it's a lot more serious

0:19:55 > 0:19:58and it means that there could be huge areas that have to be

0:19:58 > 0:20:01basically searched to try and find them.

0:20:01 > 0:20:02Search and rescue dogs

0:20:02 > 0:20:06and their handlers are on call 24 hours a day,

0:20:06 > 0:20:07so it's just as well they

0:20:07 > 0:20:12love what they do and they love the rewards they get for doing well!

0:20:12 > 0:20:13Good job!

0:20:20 > 0:20:22One week of intensive training is over.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27And it's time for our three teams to compete for a place

0:20:27 > 0:20:28in the semi-finals.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35Only one can stay in the competition.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38'I'm quite confident of making it through to the semi-final.'

0:20:38 > 0:20:42I'm just going to try my best and hope Boycie tries his best, too.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44Who will hold their nerve?

0:20:44 > 0:20:48It would mean, like, so much to me to get through to the semi-final

0:20:48 > 0:20:50cos I love training dogs and I love Ellie.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53And who will jump their way into the semi-final?

0:20:53 > 0:20:56My main competition is Alicia and Ellie

0:20:56 > 0:20:59cos she's really good at the jumping, so just have to see.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04The waiting is over. Let's find out.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12It's Showtime, and this is the time our trainers

0:21:12 > 0:21:15and dogs will have to leap into action

0:21:15 > 0:21:17and battle it out for that all-important place

0:21:17 > 0:21:18in the semi-final.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21And this is where it's all going to be taking place.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24Now we're going to be starting at 80 centimetres

0:21:24 > 0:21:27and gradually building that higher and higher.

0:21:27 > 0:21:31If our dogs don't manage to clear that top bar within their first

0:21:31 > 0:21:34attempt, they will get two more attempts at it.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36Then, if they manage to clear it,

0:21:36 > 0:21:38they can carry on with the competition.

0:21:38 > 0:21:42The winner will, of course, be the dog that can jump the highest bar,

0:21:42 > 0:21:44and then they will move on to the semi-finals.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46Now, if you had to choose one team,

0:21:46 > 0:21:49- who would you say that really stood out?- Don't make me do it!

0:21:49 > 0:21:52- I'm not going to call it! - You have to!- No, it's too close.- OK.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55I'll let this one go, then. So, let's get this competition started.

0:21:55 > 0:21:56Let's do it!

0:21:58 > 0:22:01The bar is set at 80cm.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04Right, Max and Boycie, you are first.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06Up you come!

0:22:06 > 0:22:09This doggy duo have improved leaps and bounds in training.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11Today, how high can they go?

0:22:13 > 0:22:14Come on, Boycie.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17- Good boy! Fantastic! - That was brilliant.

0:22:17 > 0:22:18Impressive first jump.

0:22:18 > 0:22:19Oliver and Squib, then.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23Oliver has struggled with confidence and enthusiasm.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24Good boy.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27Can he and Squib pull it together today when it really counts?

0:22:27 > 0:22:28Right, Squibby.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31Go!

0:22:31 > 0:22:34- Good, well done.- Well done, Oliver. Well done, Squib.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37Come on, then, Alicia and Ellie.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39This team have been the ones to beat.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42Can they reach heady heights when the pressure's on?

0:22:42 > 0:22:43Wait.

0:22:43 > 0:22:44Go on, Ellie, jump!

0:22:44 > 0:22:45- Yes!- Good!

0:22:45 > 0:22:47All three dogs made that look easy

0:22:47 > 0:22:50and the bar is raised - 90cm.

0:22:50 > 0:22:51Boycie's up again.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55Come on, Boycie.

0:22:55 > 0:22:56- Oh!- Oh!

0:22:56 > 0:22:58Oh, first knock-down.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00Two more attempts left.

0:23:00 > 0:23:01Come one, then, Boycie, over.

0:23:01 > 0:23:02- Oh!- Oh...

0:23:02 > 0:23:05Right, you've got one more attempt. Just take your time.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08Don't worry about it. You're doing absolutely brilliant.

0:23:08 > 0:23:09One chance left.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12This is tense.

0:23:12 > 0:23:13Come on, Boycie. Come on, boy.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16- Yeah!- Oh, they've done it! Ha-ha!

0:23:16 > 0:23:17And Boycie's pleased as punch!

0:23:20 > 0:23:22- Well done!- Go on! Go, go, go!

0:23:22 > 0:23:25- You kept your cool as well.- The pressure was on.- That was brilliant.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27- Good work.- Oliver and Squib, then.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Can Squib match Boycie and jump this height?

0:23:30 > 0:23:32Get up!

0:23:32 > 0:23:33- Oh!- Oh!

0:23:33 > 0:23:34Oliver's looking nervous.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38Ready? Up you get.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40Oh!

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Is this all over for them?

0:23:43 > 0:23:44Ready? Get up!

0:23:44 > 0:23:47- Yeah! Well done!- No, it's not.

0:23:47 > 0:23:48How will Ellie do?

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Come on, Ellie! Jump!

0:23:50 > 0:23:53- Yes!- Oh-ho!- Oh, wow!

0:23:53 > 0:23:57Did you see that? What a jump. That was an action shot right there.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00Ellie clears it first time and the bar goes up again.

0:24:00 > 0:24:05So 100cm, that's nine bars, now.

0:24:05 > 0:24:06Come on, boy.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09Oh, I thought he'd done it.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11Oh, Boycie just clipped it.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14Can they stay focused and jump this?

0:24:14 > 0:24:16- Yeah!- Yes, they can!

0:24:17 > 0:24:20And for Oliver and Squib and Alicia and Ellie...

0:24:22 > 0:24:27..easy clearance first time. Another bar bites the dust.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30Now it's 110cm.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32Getting into the serious heights now.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34Come on, Boycie.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37- Oi!- Oh!- That's close.

0:24:37 > 0:24:41Just missed. This is nail-biting stuff.

0:24:41 > 0:24:42Sit.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44Come on, Boycie.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46- Oh!- Even Ellie can't look.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Is this their last leap?

0:24:49 > 0:24:51Good luck, Max.

0:24:51 > 0:24:52Come on, Boycie.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Oh!

0:24:54 > 0:24:56I'm afraid, Max, that was your last attempt,

0:24:56 > 0:25:00but you did absolutely brilliantly, so huge well done.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03Bring Boycie back over here.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06Well, they've failed to jump 110cm.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09That means if Squib or Ellie manage to clear it,

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Max and Boycie will be out of the competition.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17Oliver and Squib, 110cm.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19Squibby, get up!

0:25:19 > 0:25:21- Oh!- Oh, so close.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23Two attempts left.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25And keep that enthusiasm up, Oliver.

0:25:25 > 0:25:26Up you get!

0:25:26 > 0:25:28- Yes!- Yeah, superb!

0:25:28 > 0:25:29They've done it!

0:25:29 > 0:25:31But that means Max and Boycie are out.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33Alicia and Ellie, then.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36- Come on, then.- Again, 110cm.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39Ellie needs to clear this height to match Squib.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42Wait.

0:25:42 > 0:25:43Come on, Ellie. Jump!

0:25:43 > 0:25:46- Oi!- Almost, almost.

0:25:46 > 0:25:47That's Ellie's first knock-down.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50- It's getting tense.- Wait.

0:25:50 > 0:25:51Wait!

0:25:51 > 0:25:53Don't move.

0:25:53 > 0:25:54Wait.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57Wait. Come on, Ellie, jump!

0:25:57 > 0:25:58Oh!

0:25:58 > 0:26:00If Ellie doesn't clear this jump,

0:26:00 > 0:26:02then Oliver and Squib have won.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04Take your time.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06Wait.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08Last chance to stay in the competition.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10Come on, Ellie. Jump!

0:26:10 > 0:26:12- Oh, no!- Unlucky!

0:26:12 > 0:26:13Come on, Ellie. Here's your ball.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Oh, she just clipped it, didn't she?

0:26:15 > 0:26:18And it is all over for Alicia and Ellie.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20Good, come on over,

0:26:20 > 0:26:21Alicia and Ellie.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23# Who let the dogs out? #

0:26:25 > 0:26:28Well, you all did absolutely brilliant,

0:26:28 > 0:26:31but it is obvious that our clear winners today are

0:26:31 > 0:26:34Oliver and Squib, so a massive well done to you two.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36- Superb.- Puds, come on, then.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38Hey, handsome boy.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42Hello! Good boy, well done. There you go.

0:26:42 > 0:26:46- So Oliver and Squib have made it through to the next round.- Fantastic.
