0:00:02 > 0:00:06How can wolfbloods run so fast and for so long?
0:00:06 > 0:00:08Why are their senses so intense?
0:00:08 > 0:00:10SHE SNIFFS
0:00:10 > 0:00:12And why is family so important to them?
0:00:14 > 0:00:17It all comes down to the extraordinary wild wolves
0:00:17 > 0:00:19that they share so many qualities with.
0:00:19 > 0:00:20HOWLING
0:00:20 > 0:00:22In this series, we'll uncover the truth about wolves
0:00:22 > 0:00:25and reveal just why wolfbloods are the way that they are.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28This is Wolfblood Uncovered.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36BIRDS CAW
0:00:41 > 0:00:42THUNDER RUMBLES
0:00:48 > 0:00:50HOWLING
0:00:54 > 0:00:57In this episode, we'll explore wolf intelligence and find out
0:00:57 > 0:00:59how their cunning nature has played a part
0:00:59 > 0:01:01in saving them from extinction.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10Being a wolfblood does have its advantages.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13They're extremely strong, lightning fast
0:01:13 > 0:01:14and have super senses.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17But it does have its drawbacks too.
0:01:17 > 0:01:19It's not always easy for Maddy and Rhydian
0:01:19 > 0:01:20to lead a normal teenage life.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22They have to constantly have their wits about them
0:01:22 > 0:01:24to stop people finding out the secret.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27Because of this, they have to be able to think on their feet
0:01:27 > 0:01:29and be very good at problem-solving.
0:01:29 > 0:01:31Leading up to Maddy's first transformation,
0:01:31 > 0:01:33she also had exams to think about
0:01:33 > 0:01:36and in one of them, the pressure got too much and she almost transformed,
0:01:36 > 0:01:38forcing Rhydian to come to her rescue
0:01:38 > 0:01:39with a resourceful distraction.
0:01:42 > 0:01:44Nice of you to show your face, Rhydian.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54Now, settle down, everyone.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57You have exactly one hour starting...
0:01:59 > 0:02:01..now. You may open your papers.
0:02:03 > 0:02:06TAPPING
0:02:10 > 0:02:12RAPID HEARTBEATS
0:02:18 > 0:02:19COUGHING
0:02:23 > 0:02:26HEARTBEATS GET LOUDER
0:02:33 > 0:02:35HEART BEATS FASTER
0:02:45 > 0:02:48SCRAPING AND PANTING
0:02:48 > 0:02:50FAINT HOWLING
0:02:52 > 0:02:55ALARM RINGS
0:02:55 > 0:02:57Don't panic! Stay calm, everybody, please.
0:03:00 > 0:03:01Maddy, it's over.
0:03:01 > 0:03:02OK?
0:03:04 > 0:03:07- SHE PANTS - Keep calm. Deep breaths, yeah?
0:03:10 > 0:03:13Rhydian Morris, you are in big trouble, young man.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18So intelligence and problem-solving ability is clearly important
0:03:18 > 0:03:21to wolfbloods if they want to keep their secret.
0:03:21 > 0:03:23But is it part of their wolf-like abilities?
0:03:23 > 0:03:24Well, actually, it could be,
0:03:24 > 0:03:26cos wolves are known for being particularly smart.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28So what makes them so clever?
0:03:32 > 0:03:36They have big brains, 30% bigger than the average dog.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39They have good memories and they have demonstrated the ability
0:03:39 > 0:03:41to learn and apply knowledge.
0:03:44 > 0:03:45There are lots of accounts
0:03:45 > 0:03:48that illustrate this capacity for learning.
0:03:48 > 0:03:51For example, during the heyday of buffalo hunting,
0:03:51 > 0:03:54wolves apparently learned to head towards the sound of gunshot...
0:03:54 > 0:03:55GUNSHOT
0:03:55 > 0:03:58..then would wait while hunters skinned out the buffalo
0:03:58 > 0:04:02and eat the abandoned carcasses as soon as the hunters left.
0:04:05 > 0:04:07So how else does this intelligence benefit them
0:04:07 > 0:04:09in their everyday lives?
0:04:09 > 0:04:12Well, it's thought that it could help them to survive
0:04:12 > 0:04:14in the diverse range of changing environments
0:04:14 > 0:04:16that they make their home.
0:04:16 > 0:04:18They may have become good at problem-solving
0:04:18 > 0:04:20because of the variety of challenges they face
0:04:20 > 0:04:23in the many different habitats that they live in...
0:04:24 > 0:04:27..from frozen wastelands to dense forests.
0:04:29 > 0:04:33And depending on where they are and what time of the year it is
0:04:33 > 0:04:35their food sources vary hugely,
0:04:35 > 0:04:38so they have to be able to decide what food they want to look for.
0:04:41 > 0:04:43And that's when their excellent memories come in handy.
0:04:48 > 0:04:51They learn from experience that herds of prey don't move randomly,
0:04:51 > 0:04:53but visit their favourite feeding grounds
0:04:53 > 0:04:55at certain times of year.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58This knowledge is passed from one generation to the next,
0:04:58 > 0:05:00and from year to year they can remember
0:05:00 > 0:05:02where their prey should be at any time.
0:05:03 > 0:05:05WOLF PANTS
0:05:05 > 0:05:08It's almost as if they have some kind of mental map of the area
0:05:08 > 0:05:10and the different prey sources that live in it.
0:05:12 > 0:05:14All their prey items have their pros and cons
0:05:14 > 0:05:18and working out what to hunt and when is vital to a successful kill.
0:05:20 > 0:05:22They need this learned knowledge to help them select
0:05:22 > 0:05:24the easiest prey to hunt at that time.
0:05:24 > 0:05:28For example, they know that bighorn sheep are relatively small,
0:05:28 > 0:05:31but they live in groups and have serious headgear...
0:05:34 > 0:05:37..whereas animals like moose are much bigger but are solitary
0:05:37 > 0:05:39and roam large territories.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45This ability to make mental maps of their territories
0:05:45 > 0:05:47and remember their prey's movements
0:05:47 > 0:05:50is probably key to their success as predators.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10So perhaps Maddy and Rhydian's problem-solving ability
0:06:10 > 0:06:12is partly down to the fact they're wolfbloods.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15But in their quest to keep who they really are a secret,
0:06:15 > 0:06:18it's not always about solving problems.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Sometimes they have to be cunning too,
0:06:20 > 0:06:22like when Rhydian was locked up in the police station
0:06:22 > 0:06:23during the full moon,
0:06:23 > 0:06:27Maddy and her parents had to think of a way to outwit the police
0:06:27 > 0:06:29so they'd release Rhydian before he transformed.
0:06:31 > 0:06:32They're keeping him overnight.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35They can't.
0:06:35 > 0:06:36- They can't!- Hang on, Dan.
0:06:36 > 0:06:39- If you run now, you can make it to the moor.- And leave you?
0:06:39 > 0:06:41Rhydian's going to be in that cell when the moon rises.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43At least you can get away.
0:06:45 > 0:06:46That's it!
0:06:48 > 0:06:50You can get Rhydian out of there, Dad.
0:06:50 > 0:06:52If you tell them what will happen if you don't.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54What?!
0:06:54 > 0:06:55You need to tell them...
0:07:05 > 0:07:07I suggest you take your family home
0:07:07 > 0:07:09and come back for this one in the morning. I'll show you out.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12Very well. But there's something that you need to know.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15Rhydian suffers from a psychological condition
0:07:15 > 0:07:17known as clinical lycanthropy.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20- He thinks he's a werewolf?- Exactly.
0:07:20 > 0:07:24It's a recognised psychological condition.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27Every full moon he gets distressed, even uncontrollable.
0:07:27 > 0:07:32And I'm not talking bad behaviour. I mean serious physical symptoms.
0:07:32 > 0:07:33HE PANTS
0:07:33 > 0:07:36Right, right. OK.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38If you don't believe me you can talk to his psychiatrist.
0:07:38 > 0:07:40Ahh!
0:07:41 > 0:07:45HE GROWLS
0:07:45 > 0:07:49Panic attacks, animal behaviour.
0:07:49 > 0:07:50Growling.
0:07:50 > 0:07:51HE GROWLS
0:07:51 > 0:07:53Snarling.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55Scratching at the door trying to get out.
0:07:55 > 0:07:57HE ROARS
0:07:57 > 0:08:01- I really don't... - Rhydian is in your custody.
0:08:01 > 0:08:05And now that you understand the full context of his behaviour,
0:08:05 > 0:08:08if he comes to any harm in that room, it's your fault.
0:08:08 > 0:08:09Inspector Bolton.
0:08:14 > 0:08:17Please, release him into my care before he does any real harm.
0:08:20 > 0:08:24Navigating teenage life may seem very different to a life as a wolf,
0:08:24 > 0:08:26but, surprisingly, over the centuries,
0:08:26 > 0:08:29wolves have had to outwit people a lot
0:08:29 > 0:08:32and if accounts are to be believed, then they're pretty good at it.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40In North America, wolves have been hunted throughout history
0:08:40 > 0:08:42because they were known to kill livestock
0:08:42 > 0:08:45and they were wiped out from huge parts of their range.
0:08:47 > 0:08:51But despite widespread trapping, poisoning and shooting,
0:08:51 > 0:08:53some individuals dodged the persecutors
0:08:53 > 0:08:55and in the process they became local legends.
0:08:57 > 0:08:59One of those legends was a wolf called Lobo.
0:08:59 > 0:09:01GUNSHOT AND RICOCHET
0:09:05 > 0:09:08Ranchers tried to kill him by poisoning carcasses,
0:09:08 > 0:09:09but he didn't eat them.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13They tried to kill him with traps and by hunting parties,
0:09:13 > 0:09:15but these efforts also failed.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23Eventually, a man called Ernest Thompson Seton
0:09:23 > 0:09:26was offered a reward for capturing Lobo.
0:09:26 > 0:09:28He subsequently wrote a book about this experience,
0:09:28 > 0:09:31because Lobo was so successful at avoiding capture.
0:09:33 > 0:09:37What initially started as a two-week job became an epic battle
0:09:37 > 0:09:40which lasted months and ultimately changed the way
0:09:40 > 0:09:41Seton felt about wolves.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45He tried all methods of hunting him down,
0:09:45 > 0:09:48but Lobo always managed to get away.
0:09:56 > 0:09:59Wolf biologists believe that when you repeatedly trap
0:09:59 > 0:10:03and catch wolves in a particular area, they get educated.
0:10:03 > 0:10:05You teach them how to avoid getting caught.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10So wolves like Lobo that survived being captured
0:10:10 > 0:10:12learned from the traps, guns and the poison
0:10:12 > 0:10:14that people were using to kill them.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19Seton did eventually kill Lobo by capturing and killing
0:10:19 > 0:10:22his mate Blanca, then tempting him in with her body.
0:10:24 > 0:10:25WOLF WHIMPERS
0:10:25 > 0:10:28Lobo's loyalty to his mate was his undoing.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30He was the last wolf that Seton killed
0:10:30 > 0:10:33and Seton's experience with Lobo permanently changed
0:10:33 > 0:10:35his attitude to these incredible creatures.
0:10:37 > 0:10:39His story of Lobo touched the hearts of many
0:10:39 > 0:10:42and is thought to be partly responsible for changing views
0:10:42 > 0:10:43towards the environment
0:10:43 > 0:10:46and may have played a part in starting the conservation movement.
0:10:47 > 0:10:51So although that is a sad story, it did have positive outcomes.
0:10:51 > 0:10:55It shows that wolves have the capacity to be extremely intelligent
0:10:55 > 0:10:57and that's important when it comes to catching their prey
0:10:57 > 0:10:59and avoiding being caught themselves.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02So it's not just teenagers who turn into wolves
0:11:02 > 0:11:03that have to be cunning and clever.
0:11:04 > 0:11:08- You have to get out of here, like, now.- What? Why?
0:11:08 > 0:11:11- I'm comfy.- The blood test, you idiot. They'll see you're not human.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13- WHISPERING:- They'll find out you're a wolfblood.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15- DOOR BUZZES - Let me get the door for you.
