0:01:27 > 0:01:30it's vital they act quickly to defend their space.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56and taking down prey that could be theirs or threatening their cubs.
0:03:59 > 0:04:02The size of a wolf's territory often depends on how many
0:04:02 > 0:04:05wolves are in the family group and how their prey is distributed.
0:04:07 > 0:04:10The larger the wolf pack and the more spread out the prey,
0:04:10 > 0:04:12the more land they need.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19Some territories are quite small - just 13 square miles.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21But others can be enormous.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25Some are four times the size of London!
0:04:30 > 0:04:34So how do they go about protecting these often huge areas?
0:04:41 > 0:04:45One of the main things they do is to wee on their trails and boundaries.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52A clear, smelly signal telling other wolves who owns this land
0:04:52 > 0:04:54and a warning to keep out.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59The pack leaders do most of this scent marking.
0:04:59 > 0:05:03They leave a patch of urine every couple of hundred metres or so -
0:05:03 > 0:05:05a trail of unmissable signposts.
0:05:10 > 0:05:12The smell lasts up to three weeks,
0:05:12 > 0:05:15so it's perfect for protecting large areas.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20Along the boundaries where they are most likely to come into contact
0:05:20 > 0:05:24with their neighbours, the wolves scent mark twice as often.
0:05:24 > 0:05:26They also use droppings as well as urine
0:05:26 > 0:05:28as a double warning to intruders.
0:05:33 > 0:05:35Wolves make sure that really important places
0:05:35 > 0:05:38such as the den sites where their pups are born are kept well
0:05:38 > 0:05:42away from these borders to reduce the chance of hostile encounters.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52and they'll scratch at the ground to release the smell.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07to protect their territory and all that matters to them.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20But sometimes these simple warnings just aren't enough.
