0:04:27 > 0:04:30Yes, I have. I'm going home. Thank you very much!
0:04:32 > 0:04:38When I first saw the script for that sketch, it said,
0:04:38 > 0:04:42"Eric and Ernie, plus Penelope, staircase."
0:04:42 > 0:04:46And I thought, that's rather strange, I wonder what that will be.
0:04:46 > 0:04:49So, when I started rehearsing, they said to me,
0:04:49 > 0:04:52I said, "What's the staircase?"
0:04:52 > 0:04:55"Oh, what we'll do is make a grand entrance.
0:04:55 > 0:04:59"You'll be in a beautiful gown, and we'll be in white tie and tails.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03"two of the last steps are missing."
0:05:03 > 0:05:06So, I said, "Fine."
0:05:06 > 0:05:09I was in their hands, I'd have done anything by this time.
0:05:09 > 0:05:13It wasn't until I got into the studio that I saw
0:05:13 > 0:05:18that the last two steps were, in fact, about 10 foot high.
0:05:18 > 0:05:21So, I was taken totally by surprise.
0:05:21 > 0:05:23With Eric and Ernie, the comedy was always about
0:05:23 > 0:05:28puncturing the glamour, and sending up the grand occasion.
0:05:28 > 0:05:33# So we'll walk up the avenue Yes, we'll walk up the avenue

0:05:44 > 0:05:48Everything was rehearsed terribly, terribly well, with a lot of laughs.
0:05:48 > 0:05:53I can remember standing in between Eric and Ernie
0:05:53 > 0:05:56at some point during one or two of the sketches I did.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59And Eric went forward as if I'd goosed him.
0:05:59 > 0:06:01And, of course, I laughed.
0:06:01 > 0:06:03He did that every day, every day I laughed,
0:06:03 > 0:06:06and indeed I laughed on the take as well.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16It may have looked as if they were making it up as they went along,
0:06:16 > 0:06:21but it took two weeks of intensive rehearsals to get a show into shape.
0:06:21 > 0:06:26Here's some rare footage of the boys rehearsing with Anita Harris.

0:40:30 > 0:40:34# There may be teardrops to shed
0:40:34 > 0:40:36# Aaah, aaah
0:40:36 > 0:40:42# So while there's moonlight and music and love and romance
0:40:44 > 0:40:48# Let's face the music and dance
0:40:50 > 0:40:51# I wont dance. #
0:40:51 > 0:40:53- She won't dance!- Don't ask her!
0:40:53 > 0:40:56- # I won't dance! # - She won't dance!- Don't ask her!
0:40:56 > 0:40:58- # I won't dance! # - She won't dance!
0:40:58 > 0:41:00# Madam, with you
0:41:00 > 0:41:04# My heart won't let my feet do things they should do
0:41:07 > 0:41:09- # You know what? - Know what?
0:41:09 > 0:41:11- # I'm lovely - And so what?
0:41:11 > 0:41:13- # So what? - I'm lovely
0:41:13 > 0:41:15- # You know what? - No, what?
0:41:15 > 0:41:17# You do to me
0:41:17 > 0:41:21# I'm like an ocean wave that's bumped on the shore
0:41:23 > 0:41:25# Must you dance?
0:41:25 > 0:41:28# Every dance?
0:41:28 > 0:41:33# With the same fortunate man?
0:41:33 > 0:41:39# You have danced with him since the music began
0:41:39 > 0:41:42# Won't you change partners
0:41:42 > 0:41:44# And dance with me?
0:41:46 > 0:41:50# Won't you dance Quite so close
0:41:50 > 0:41:55# With your lips Touching his face
0:41:55 > 0:42:01# Won't you change partners and dance with me?
0:42:01 > 0:42:05# You may never want to Change partners again. #
0:42:25 > 0:42:31By 1976, expectations of the Morecambe and Wise Christmas shows were running so high
0:42:31 > 0:42:35that the strain was beginning to take it's toll on Eric's health.
0:42:35 > 0:42:39So, for this sketch, Eric took things at a slower pace
0:42:39 > 0:42:44while Ernie was the one on the move. And what a mover!
0:42:55 > 0:43:00# I'm singin' in the rain
0:43:00 > 0:43:03# Just singin' in the rain
0:43:03 > 0:43:06# What a glorious feeling
0:43:06 > 0:43:10# I'm happy again
0:43:10 > 0:43:13# I'm laughin' at clouds
0:43:13 > 0:43:18# So dark up above
0:43:18 > 0:43:20# The sun's in my heart
0:43:20 > 0:43:23# And I'm ready for love
0:43:23 > 0:43:27# Let the stormy clouds chase
0:43:27 > 0:43:30# Everyone from the place
0:43:31 > 0:43:34# Come on with the rain
0:43:34 > 0:43:37# I've a smile on my face
0:43:37 > 0:43:40# I walk down the lane
0:43:40 > 0:43:44# With a happy refrain
0:43:44 > 0:43:49# I'm singin' Just singin' in the rain
0:43:52 > 0:43:54# I'm dancin' in the rain
0:43:54 > 0:43:57# Da-da-da, da-da-da
0:43:57 > 0:44:02# Dee-da-da, da-da-dee-da
0:44:02 > 0:44:05# I'm happy again
0:44:05 > 0:44:08# I walk down the lane
0:44:08 > 0:44:11# With a happy refrain
0:44:11 > 0:44:16# Just singing and dancing in the rain. #
0:44:35 > 0:44:38I'm wet through!
0:44:38 > 0:44:40Have you seen what you've done to me? I'm wet through!
0:44:40 > 0:44:44You! I'm wet through, I am. That's not nice.
0:44:44 > 0:44:46I'm wet through, folks.
0:44:46 > 0:44:51# Just singing and dancing in the rain. #
0:45:09 > 0:45:12The tap dance at the beginning of this next number was an old routine
0:45:12 > 0:45:16they used to do in their variety days, called Yankee Doodle Dandy.
0:45:16 > 0:45:21It was the only tap dance they knew and they got it down to a fine art.
0:47:54 > 0:47:56What are you playing at?
0:47:56 > 0:47:59I mean, let's face it, he's half a star, aren't you?
0:47:59 > 0:48:03Yes, I'm half a st...
0:48:03 > 0:48:04Pushing us off!
0:48:05 > 0:48:08According to Eric, that number had to be done in one
0:48:08 > 0:48:11take, otherwise they had to start again,
0:48:11 > 0:48:15which is why they kept in the unrehearsed fall during the fight.
0:48:18 > 0:48:20Please, please, please!
0:48:20 > 0:48:23We're in the middle of our dance routine...
0:48:23 > 0:48:25Please, pull yourselves together!
0:48:25 > 0:48:27Get in a line, get in line! Go on.
0:48:28 > 0:48:31- Wait!- One, two...
0:48:36 > 0:48:39One of Morecambe and Wise's most famous sketches had had
0:48:39 > 0:48:42a dry run way back in the 1960s.
0:48:42 > 0:48:46MUSIC: "Piano Concerto" by Grieg
0:48:48 > 0:48:49- I say!- Yes?
0:48:49 > 0:48:51What are you doing there?
0:48:51 > 0:48:52I was going to play the piano.
0:48:52 > 0:48:55Well, you should, I cued you in to play the piano.
0:48:55 > 0:48:58You see, the point is, there's not enough introduction music.
0:48:58 > 0:49:00- Do you follow my meaning? - What do you mean?
0:49:00 > 0:49:02Well, I'm not getting there in time with the introduction.
0:49:02 > 0:49:06You see, what's happening, it's going, "La-ta-ta-ta...
0:49:06 > 0:49:09"ta-ta-ta..."
0:49:09 > 0:49:11- And I'm only getting here. - Oh, I see.
0:49:11 > 0:49:13Really, I should be here.
0:49:13 > 0:49:14Yes, yes.
0:49:14 > 0:49:15So...
0:49:17 > 0:49:20..the introduction music is about that much too short.
0:49:20 > 0:49:22- Oh, is it?!- Yeah.
0:49:22 > 0:49:25But it was the added ingredient of having one of the world's most
0:49:25 > 0:49:31respected conductors, Andre Previn, that took the sketch to new heights.
0:49:31 > 0:49:34At the time, Previn was so busy he famously had to
0:49:34 > 0:49:37learn his lines in the taxi on the way to the studios.
0:49:37 > 0:49:41The lack of rehearsal made Eric so nervous he asked Ernie
0:49:41 > 0:49:45if he'd play the conducting role as he had years before.
0:49:45 > 0:49:47Luckily he didn't get his way.
0:49:47 > 0:49:52This is the moment when Eric realises it's going to be OK.
0:49:52 > 0:49:53Good night, gentlemen.
0:49:53 > 0:49:55- Please don't go. - What's the matter with him?
0:49:55 > 0:49:57Don't go, Mr Preview...
0:49:57 > 0:50:00- Privet!- Previn.
0:50:00 > 0:50:02I can assure you that Eric is more than capable.
0:50:02 > 0:50:05Well, all right, I'll go and get my baton.
0:50:05 > 0:50:07- Please do that.- Yes, it's in Chicago.
0:50:07 > 0:50:08Is it?
0:50:10 > 0:50:13Wow, he's in, I like him!
0:50:13 > 0:50:18Eric gave Previn two pieces of advice before filming this...
0:50:24 > 0:50:27Only thing is, he forgot to tell the orchestra.
0:50:27 > 0:50:30Ladies and gentlemen, tonight, Grieg's Piano Concerto by Grieg...
0:50:30 > 0:50:32LAUGHTER
0:50:33 > 0:50:35..Soloist, Mr Eric Morecambe,
0:50:35 > 0:50:37conducted by Mr Andre Previn. Thank you.
0:50:53 > 0:50:56MAN LAUGHS
0:51:00 > 0:51:01What's the matter?
0:51:03 > 0:51:05What's wrong? What happened?
0:51:05 > 0:51:06It's the introduction.
0:51:06 > 0:51:08The introduction's wrong?
0:51:08 > 0:51:10It's too short.
0:51:10 > 0:51:12- It's too short?!- Oh, you noticed?
0:51:12 > 0:51:15Yes! By how much is it too short?
0:51:15 > 0:51:17Well, you see, I went down here like that.
0:51:17 > 0:51:19Yes. You wasted some time there!
0:51:19 > 0:51:21I wasted time there, yes.
0:51:21 > 0:51:25You see, it's about, I would say about that much.
0:51:27 > 0:51:29- It's about a yard.- About a yard.
0:51:29 > 0:51:32Yes, if you could lengthen it by about a yard, we'll be in.
0:51:32 > 0:51:34And...what do you think we can do about that?
0:51:34 > 0:51:35Oh, well...
0:51:35 > 0:51:37That's nothing to do with me.
0:51:37 > 0:51:38My musical manager does all this.
0:51:38 > 0:51:40Could we get in touch with Grieg?
0:51:40 > 0:51:41That's a good idea.
0:51:42 > 0:51:43You mean, call him on the phone?
0:51:43 > 0:51:45Well, why not?
0:51:45 > 0:51:47What a shame I didn't bring his phone number.
0:51:47 > 0:51:49It's Norway something or other, isn't it?
0:51:49 > 0:51:51What's the code?
0:51:51 > 0:51:52Fingal's Cave.
0:51:52 > 0:51:54I think it's Fingal's Cave.
0:51:54 > 0:51:57Mind you, you might not get him, he could be out skiing.
0:51:57 > 0:51:59Look, look, could we just try it again?
0:51:59 > 0:52:02I'll tell you what, this time I'll sit down there waiting.
0:52:02 > 0:52:03What a good thought.
0:52:03 > 0:52:04- Hey!- You'd be ready.
0:52:04 > 0:52:06He's in, isn't he? I like him. Oh, yes!
0:52:06 > 0:52:08- I'll announce it again.- Do that.
0:52:08 > 0:52:10All right, ladies and gentlemen, Grieg's Piano Concerto,
0:52:10 > 0:52:13soloist Eric Morecambe, conductor Mr Andrew Preview.
0:52:13 > 0:52:16DRUM ROLLS
0:52:32 > 0:52:34Any time!
0:52:34 > 0:52:36Could I have a word with you, please?
0:52:36 > 0:52:38I'm sorry, I'm terribly sorry.
0:52:38 > 0:52:42Look, you see, the point is, it's one of those things...
0:52:42 > 0:52:43Has he gone?
0:52:43 > 0:52:45Oh, there you are.
0:52:46 > 0:52:49- You see, I hope you don't mind me saying this...- No.
0:52:49 > 0:52:53..but when you got to the part which was my cue, I couldn't see you
0:52:53 > 0:52:54for the lid of the piano.
0:52:54 > 0:52:56- Yes.- The lid of the piano was in the way?
0:52:56 > 0:52:58- Was it?- Yes.
0:52:58 > 0:53:00It was the lid of the piano.
0:53:00 > 0:53:02I don't know what we can do about that.
0:53:02 > 0:53:04He wants to be taller, doesn't he?
0:53:04 > 0:53:06Could you wear high heels?
0:53:06 > 0:53:07Again?
0:53:07 > 0:53:09No, you don't have to, you know.
0:53:09 > 0:53:11I don't know what we can do about that.
0:53:11 > 0:53:12Well, I have a suggestion.
0:53:13 > 0:53:16Would you jump up in the air?
0:53:16 > 0:53:20So I can see you over the lid of the piano?
0:53:20 > 0:53:24You want me to actually jump into the air on the rostrum
0:53:24 > 0:53:26in order so you can see my cue?
0:53:26 > 0:53:29Yes, I mean, if you'd do that for me?
0:53:29 > 0:53:31Yes, I'll do that for you.
0:53:32 > 0:53:35- I'll announce it again. - Yes, nice man, isn't he?
0:53:35 > 0:53:37- Isn't he charming?- I like him.
0:53:37 > 0:53:40Grieg by... With him and him.
0:53:40 > 0:53:42OPENING BARS OF CONCERTO
0:53:44 > 0:53:46Great!
0:53:46 > 0:53:47ERIC PLAYS WRONG TUNE
0:54:12 > 0:54:14Something wrong with the violins?
0:54:16 > 0:54:18No, there's nothing wrong with the violins.
0:54:18 > 0:54:20That's only your opinion.
0:54:20 > 0:54:23What were you playing just then?
0:54:24 > 0:54:26The Grieg Piano Concerto.
0:54:27 > 0:54:29But...
0:54:31 > 0:54:34..you're playing all the wrong notes.
0:54:46 > 0:54:48I'm playing all the right notes.
0:54:50 > 0:54:52But not necessarily in the right order.
0:54:56 > 0:54:57I'll give you that.
0:54:57 > 0:54:59I'll give you that, sunshine.
0:55:05 > 0:55:08That sounded quite reasonable to me.
0:55:08 > 0:55:11Are you satisfied, Mr Preview?
0:55:11 > 0:55:12- No!- No?
0:55:12 > 0:55:15What do you mean, no?
0:55:15 > 0:55:17- I am not satisfied.- Why not?
0:55:17 > 0:55:20Look here, with all due... Would you mind, just one second?
0:55:20 > 0:55:23Don't forget, for another four pounds we could have got Edward Heath!
0:55:27 > 0:55:30HE PLAYS GRIEG PIANO CONCERTO
0:55:49 > 0:55:52Rubbish!
0:55:53 > 0:55:55PLAYING ERIC'S TUNE
0:55:55 > 0:55:56That's it!
0:55:56 > 0:55:58That's us got it. Come on!
0:56:03 > 0:56:05Wonderful stuff.
0:56:05 > 0:56:09So we've reached the end of this celebration of the song
0:56:09 > 0:56:11and dance of Morecambe and Wise.
0:56:11 > 0:56:15There's really only one thing left to do. Here's a clue.
0:56:19 > 0:56:20Remind you of anything?
0:56:20 > 0:56:25No? It was Eric and Ernie's homage to the Marx Brothers.
0:56:25 > 0:56:31The song that accompanied that iconic dance began life in 1966.
0:56:31 > 0:56:35It was written by a couple of New Yorkers, Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee.
0:56:35 > 0:56:39It was a sweet, some might say forgettable, little piece.
0:56:39 > 0:56:42But it attracted Eric and Ernie
0:56:42 > 0:56:47because Mrs Morecambe's pet name for her son was "Sunshine".
0:56:47 > 0:56:48Good night.
0:56:52 > 0:56:57# Bring me Sunshine, in your smile
0:56:57 > 0:57:01# Bring me laughter all the while. #
0:57:01 > 0:57:03You said we were finishing with that one!
0:57:03 > 0:57:05# In this world where we live
0:57:05 > 0:57:07# There should be more happiness
0:57:07 > 0:57:09# So much joy you can give
0:57:09 > 0:57:12# To each brand-new bright tomorrow
0:57:12 > 0:57:17# Make me happy, through the years
0:57:17 > 0:57:21# Never bring me any tears... #
0:57:21 > 0:57:24- What do you think of it so far? - Rubbish!
0:57:24 > 0:57:27# Let your arms be as warm as the sun from up above
0:57:29 > 0:57:35# Bring me fun, bring me sunshine Bring me love
0:57:36 > 0:57:41# Bring me sunshine in your smile
0:57:41 > 0:57:43# Bring me laughter
0:57:43 > 0:57:47# All the while
0:57:47 > 0:57:52# Let your arms be as warm as the sun from up above
0:57:52 > 0:57:54# Bring me fun
0:57:54 > 0:57:58# Bring me sunshine Bring me love. #
