0:38:13 > 0:38:15Yes. He said he could make me a star.

0:38:31 > 0:38:33I don't remember.
0:38:33 > 0:38:36But I was dead set against it.
0:38:36 > 0:38:39I'm glad that I did put my foot down.
0:38:39 > 0:38:43Was there someone at that time who was an influence upon you?

0:38:50 > 0:38:54But Judy and I, we became friends.
0:38:54 > 0:38:56# I was... #
0:38:56 > 0:38:59She used to meet me years later at the stage door
0:38:59 > 0:39:01with a bottle of wine
0:39:01 > 0:39:06in this big limo and then we'd go to a nightclub.
0:39:06 > 0:39:09But on the way we drank this bottle of Liebfraumilch that she liked
0:39:09 > 0:39:11very much.
0:39:11 > 0:39:14There's lots of stories about playing these really hostile
0:39:14 > 0:39:17theatres, playing the Glasgow Empire.
0:39:17 > 0:39:21Well, they purposely sent me up to Glasgow but did not tell me
0:39:21 > 0:39:23that they were a tough crowd.
0:39:23 > 0:39:28I was in the dressing room and I could hear some noise over
0:39:28 > 0:39:30the Tannoy and it's the balancing act
0:39:30 > 0:39:33and they were booing and calling out.
0:39:33 > 0:39:36"Fall off!"
0:39:36 > 0:39:38And, of course, he's got his wife on his shoulders...
0:39:38 > 0:39:40HE LAUGHS
0:39:40 > 0:39:42They were willing people to fail?
0:39:42 > 0:39:45Exactly. I went on stage and I'm singing
0:39:45 > 0:39:50# I've got you under my skin... #
0:39:50 > 0:39:54Then suddenly a voice says, "Take it off. Take it all off. Strip."
0:39:54 > 0:39:56HE LAUGHS
0:39:56 > 0:40:00I put my hands on my hips and I said, "Now listen here, you lot.
0:40:00 > 0:40:03"I've come here tonight to sing for you,
0:40:03 > 0:40:06"and if you don't like it, then I'll go home.
0:40:06 > 0:40:08"But give me a chance."
0:40:08 > 0:40:10There was silence.
0:40:10 > 0:40:13And I looked at the music director and... "Yeah, let's go."
0:40:13 > 0:40:16And they were fantastic. And ever since...
0:40:16 > 0:40:19- You just had to show them who was boss.- Glasgow's become a...
0:40:19 > 0:40:21Well, nobody fought back before.
0:40:21 > 0:40:23This is what I was told.
0:40:23 > 0:40:25It was fantastic.
0:40:25 > 0:40:27Has it ever failed you, your voice?
0:40:29 > 0:40:32Yes. Very badly.
0:40:32 > 0:40:33Um...
0:40:33 > 0:40:37After my daughter died, Samantha.
0:40:37 > 0:40:39It was just devastating.
0:40:41 > 0:40:43And I went home
0:40:43 > 0:40:47and a week of being alone...
0:40:47 > 0:40:51I woke up one day and I said, "I have to go back on stage.
0:40:51 > 0:40:53"This is k... This is k..."
0:40:53 > 0:40:56I don't know what I would have done with myself.
0:40:57 > 0:40:58And then came the show.
0:40:58 > 0:41:02And I walked on the stage and I opened my mouth to sing Goldfinger
0:41:02 > 0:41:04and nothing came out. It was like...
0:41:04 > 0:41:06WHISPERS: Gold...
0:41:06 > 0:41:11And what had happened was instead of staying at home and grieving
0:41:11 > 0:41:14and getting it out of my system that way,
0:41:14 > 0:41:16I was singing it through the songs
0:41:16 > 0:41:20and probably wasn't breathing in the right places
0:41:20 > 0:41:22and panicking probably, you know.
0:41:22 > 0:41:25Six months I couldn't sing at all.
0:41:26 > 0:41:31And then a vocal coach, Helena Shenel, who I thank so much...
0:41:31 > 0:41:35I just worked with Helena doing these vocal exercises,
0:41:35 > 0:41:36strengthening my vocal cords.
0:41:36 > 0:41:39And at the end of the year she said,
0:41:39 > 0:41:44"You know, I've discovered you have another...another octave
0:41:44 > 0:41:46"that you never use.
0:41:46 > 0:41:48"I've never heard you sing that high."
0:41:48 > 0:41:53And she did my spirit the world of good, and my soul, and...
0:41:53 > 0:41:55I went back on stage.
0:41:55 > 0:41:57What is your favourite of your recordings?
0:41:59 > 0:42:02How Do You Keep The Music Playing?
0:42:02 > 0:42:05It is so beautiful.
0:42:05 > 0:42:08You listen to the words. "How do you keep the music playing?"
0:42:09 > 0:42:15# How do you make it last?
0:42:16 > 0:42:19# How do you keep the song
0:42:19 > 0:42:25# From fading so fast? #
0:42:25 > 0:42:29And it fits, you know, cos how DO you keep the music playing?
0:42:29 > 0:42:31How do you keep on?
0:42:31 > 0:42:34That, for me, is my song.
0:42:34 > 0:42:37And do you sometimes get too emotional to actually...?
0:42:37 > 0:42:41Yes, I had to take it out because it made me so emotional.
0:42:41 > 0:42:45My childhood - you know, growing up in poverty,
0:42:45 > 0:42:48not knowing where the next meal would come from -
0:42:48 > 0:42:51and my life story within those songs.
0:42:51 > 0:42:58# How do you lose yourself to someone? #
0:42:58 > 0:43:01- Do you ever think, "Where did this gift come from?"- Yes.
0:43:01 > 0:43:03I bombarded my mother with questions,
0:43:03 > 0:43:06because none of my siblings sang.
0:43:06 > 0:43:10So I really don't know where this talent comes from.
0:43:12 > 0:43:16APPLAUSE
0:43:20 > 0:43:24So, you went from humble beginnings to enjoy huge success.
0:43:24 > 0:43:27You burst onto the scene with your very first single aged just 19.
0:43:27 > 0:43:29To put it in perspective, when I was 19,
0:43:29 > 0:43:32I was eating Pot Noodle and watching Kilroy.
0:43:32 > 0:43:34- LAUGHTER - Now, what was it like becoming
0:43:34 > 0:43:36so famous so young?

0:43:40 > 0:43:43And I got to sing as well. You know, I loved it.
