0:00:04 > 0:00:07Welcome to a world where nothing is quite as it seems.
0:00:07 > 0:00:09Welcome to Fake Britain.
0:00:09 > 0:00:11SHOUTING
0:00:22 > 0:00:26- Get your hands behind your back! Now!- Get your hands behind your back now!
0:00:26 > 0:00:29It's just an ordinary house. It could be anywhere in the country,
0:00:29 > 0:00:32but this is a house that's filled with fakes
0:00:32 > 0:00:34and you may not know it,
0:00:34 > 0:00:36but your home could be full of them too.
0:00:36 > 0:00:39During the series, we'll be investigating the criminals
0:00:39 > 0:00:41trying to get their hands on your cash
0:00:41 > 0:00:44by using forgeries, frauds and fakery.
0:00:44 > 0:00:48And I'll be showing you how you can avoid being taken for a ride.
0:00:49 > 0:00:54Coming up, we uncover a black market in fake car servicing software
0:00:54 > 0:00:57that could put your life at risk.
0:00:57 > 0:01:00There are actual very significant safety implications
0:01:00 > 0:01:02for the general public.
0:01:02 > 0:01:06How fake henna could scar you forever...
0:01:06 > 0:01:08There is no such thing as black henna.
0:01:08 > 0:01:12My hands and arms were burning. The pain was too much, you know?
0:01:12 > 0:01:15And how top of the range chefs' knives are being faked
0:01:15 > 0:01:19and sold to the public and restaurants around the country.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22We opened the box, looked at the knives
0:01:22 > 0:01:24and were pretty gobsmacked at what we saw.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33This is henna decoration.
0:01:33 > 0:01:37It's a plant extract that's used in hair and beauty products,
0:01:37 > 0:01:40it's natural, it's safe and as you can see,
0:01:40 > 0:01:42- Denise, it's very beautiful. - Thank you.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46This however, is quite different. It's black henna.
0:01:46 > 0:01:47People are fooled into thinking
0:01:47 > 0:01:51that black henna is just a different type, a different colour of henna,
0:01:51 > 0:01:56but it's not. It's a fake. There's no such thing as black henna.
0:01:56 > 0:02:00It's in fact an illegal and dangerous chemical concoction,
0:02:00 > 0:02:03that deceives and harms the people that use it.
0:02:05 > 0:02:06Ah!
0:02:06 > 0:02:08Simon Loxham lives in Surrey with his wife
0:02:09 > 0:02:11and two children, Gabriel and Ruben.
0:02:11 > 0:02:13Come on, Gabe! Come here!
0:02:14 > 0:02:17They went on an annual family holiday to Spain.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20And a couple of days into the holiday,
0:02:20 > 0:02:23Gabriel and Ruben wanted to get temporary henna designs
0:02:23 > 0:02:27painted on their arms from an artist they'd seen on the beach.
0:02:28 > 0:02:32We kept seeing this tattooist on the seafront.
0:02:32 > 0:02:36We were being hassled every day by the children
0:02:36 > 0:02:40and after a few days, we decided to get it done.
0:02:40 > 0:02:44Simon had no idea of the dangers of black henna or what was in it.
0:02:45 > 0:02:50There was no mention of black henna or anything like that.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52It was seen very much as a temporary thing
0:02:52 > 0:02:56and something for a bit of fun on holiday.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59Everyone was delighted with the result.
0:02:59 > 0:03:03And they looked fantastic for a few days,
0:03:03 > 0:03:05they were really black and looked nice
0:03:05 > 0:03:06and the boys loved them.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09Simon and his family enjoyed the rest of their holiday
0:03:09 > 0:03:12and the children loved their painted designs.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17But when they returned home, the fun stopped.
0:03:18 > 0:03:21About a week after we arrived back in the UK,
0:03:21 > 0:03:24the black started to fade,
0:03:25 > 0:03:27but in place of that started this blistering
0:03:28 > 0:03:31and his arm over a few days progressively
0:03:32 > 0:03:37was raised in a perfect scorpion blister.
0:03:37 > 0:03:41Horrified, Simon and his wife rushed Gabriel to the doctor's,
0:03:41 > 0:03:43but they were just as shocked.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46They didn't know what it was.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49The doctor thought that he'd actually had a real tattoo.
0:03:49 > 0:03:51It looked that bad.
0:03:52 > 0:03:53But things even worse,
0:03:53 > 0:03:56as the dangerous chemicals started reacting with Gabriel's body
0:03:57 > 0:03:59and they were poisoning him.
0:03:59 > 0:04:04The scab started to disappear and move into, um,
0:04:04 > 0:04:07sort of, a weeping, pus-sy mess.
0:04:07 > 0:04:10And he started getting spots all around his arm.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14At one point, it was literally dripping,
0:04:14 > 0:04:17there so much fluid coming out of his skin.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19You were eating breakfast, weren't you and I had to
0:04:19 > 0:04:22almost mop up underneath you with a tissue,
0:04:22 > 0:04:24it was dripping so much.
0:04:24 > 0:04:28Terrified, Simon took Gabriel back to the doctor's.
0:04:29 > 0:04:34Tests revealed that the culprit was Paraphenylenediamine, known as PPD.
0:04:35 > 0:04:37PPD is a colourless chemical,
0:04:37 > 0:04:40but it reacts with oxygen to give it a colour.
0:04:41 > 0:04:45It's added to natural henna to turn it black.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48It was something that was painted on the skin,
0:04:48 > 0:04:52and as a result of being painting on the skin had seeped into his skin
0:04:52 > 0:04:56and was attacking his body from the inside.
0:04:56 > 0:05:02That was quite frightening that something so innocent and fun
0:05:02 > 0:05:06had actually damaged his body on a permanent basis.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09The doctor said the chemicals were attacking his body
0:05:09 > 0:05:13and if we didn't sort it out soon, he could become quite ill.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18Eventually, the blister cleared up,
0:05:18 > 0:05:21but it's left a severe and lasting effect on Gabriel.
0:05:22 > 0:05:26You can see on his arm, still, a scorpion shape.
0:05:27 > 0:05:31It's more noticeable when he's got a bit of colour after a holiday.
0:05:31 > 0:05:36And he's now over-sensitised to PPD.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38Gabriel needs to be careful,
0:05:38 > 0:05:41as PPD is found in many household products
0:05:41 > 0:05:45and contact with them could cause him a severe reaction.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47It's in textile and hair dyes,
0:05:47 > 0:05:51black rubber, petrol, and photocopying and printing inks.
0:05:51 > 0:05:57But it's banned in skin products in the UK and across the EU.
0:05:57 > 0:06:00It's something he'll have to be careful of for the rest of his life.
0:06:00 > 0:06:04Later, we discover that fake henna isn't only being used
0:06:04 > 0:06:05on the beaches of Europe.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08It's also openly available on British high streets,
0:06:08 > 0:06:11as one woman knows only too well.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15It's not like any other illness.
0:06:15 > 0:06:17It's not for one or two days and then you get better.
0:06:17 > 0:06:20It was just terrible. It was just, it was too much.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31This disc contains all the technical information you need to service
0:06:31 > 0:06:34over 15,000 different types of vehicle.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37It's sold to garages up and down the country.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40They pop it in a computer and out comes
0:06:40 > 0:06:44everything they need to know to look after your car properly.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48But it's also a target for fakers.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52And that's putting you and me at risk on the roads.
0:06:53 > 0:06:55Garages need service information
0:06:55 > 0:06:58to make sure a car is looked after properly.
0:06:59 > 0:07:02In Slough, mechanic Andy knows how important this information is
0:07:02 > 0:07:05and how things have changed.
0:07:05 > 0:07:09Back in the 1970s when cars were much less complicated
0:07:09 > 0:07:12and nowhere near the amount of electronics,
0:07:12 > 0:07:16we just needed a little book like this and this book contained
0:07:16 > 0:07:19all the information that you really needed to know.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23Today, vehicles are so sophisticated and complex,
0:07:23 > 0:07:26they need something much more detailed.
0:07:28 > 0:07:33We've got 15,000 plus vehicles which could come in to the garage
0:07:33 > 0:07:35and obviously that amount of information
0:07:35 > 0:07:37can't be contained in a little book anymore.
0:07:37 > 0:07:39All the information is now computerised
0:07:40 > 0:07:43and one of the systems mechanics use is Autodata.
0:07:43 > 0:07:46Everything they'll need, including all the latest manufacturer updates,
0:07:47 > 0:07:49it's all on a computer disc.
0:07:49 > 0:07:51It basically gives us
0:07:51 > 0:07:53all the information that we need to know.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55What operations need to be carried out,
0:07:55 > 0:07:56what needs to be checked, what needs to be replaced.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59The information costs several hundred pounds every year
0:07:59 > 0:08:01on an annual subscription.
0:08:01 > 0:08:04Details of more than 80 manufacturers for cars
0:08:04 > 0:08:08going back to 1959 - they're are all on the system.
0:08:08 > 0:08:11Right, the first thing that we'll check is the tyre pressures.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15If there's an underinflated tyre, it's dangerous.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18But manufacturers update information all the time,
0:08:18 > 0:08:21so the computerised system is constantly updated too
0:08:22 > 0:08:24and garages are made aware of the changes.
0:08:25 > 0:08:28The fake discs are copies of older versions of the system
0:08:28 > 0:08:31and are not registered with the company.
0:08:31 > 0:08:34They won't have recent updates or get any new ones.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36That means the servicing won't be done properly
0:08:37 > 0:08:40and that could have dangerous consequences for you and your car.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45Rod Williams, Chief Executive of Autodata,
0:08:45 > 0:08:49is worried that the fakers are putting the motoring public at risk.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52If you take your vehicle in to a garage,
0:08:52 > 0:08:55you're trusting them... They're working on your brakes for example
0:08:55 > 0:08:58to make sure that you can stop the car in case of an emergency.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01The implications for this kind of counterfeiting
0:09:01 > 0:09:04and faking activity aren't just about the actual counterfeiting
0:09:04 > 0:09:06and someone else making a fast buck.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08There are actual very significant
0:09:08 > 0:09:11safety implications for the general public.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14Rod feels the situation is now so serious
0:09:14 > 0:09:18that Autodata is using private investigators like Julian French
0:09:18 > 0:09:20to track the fakers down.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23In Kent, he's hoping to catch a couple red-handed
0:09:23 > 0:09:24selling the fake software.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28He's posing as a customer wanting to buy the disc.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33Today we're hoping to meet up with a seller
0:09:34 > 0:09:36offering illegal Autodata software.
0:09:36 > 0:09:40This is a joint project, involving the police and Trading Standards.
0:09:40 > 0:09:45The suspects targeted are posing as Autodata employees.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47The actual person herself
0:09:47 > 0:09:50told some of the people that she actually worked for Autodata.
0:09:50 > 0:09:54On other occasions she's told people that she used to work for Autodata.
0:09:56 > 0:09:59What she seems to be doing is trying to make out that what she's selling
0:09:59 > 0:10:04is actually genuine software but it's just she's selling it cheap.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07But we know for a fact, we know it's counterfeit software.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12Julian is working with the police and Trading Standards,
0:10:12 > 0:10:14their identities have to remain hidden.
0:10:15 > 0:10:19They're hoping to catch some sneaky software sellers in the act.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22They've agreed to meet the suspects in a supermarket car park.
0:10:24 > 0:10:28Right, this is a good place for us to be able to watch the vehicle
0:10:28 > 0:10:29where the deal is going to go down.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31We can sit back here,
0:10:31 > 0:10:33we can see the movement from the people in there
0:10:33 > 0:10:36and we'll be able to see the signal from our colleague in there,
0:10:36 > 0:10:38who's going to let us know when the deal's done
0:10:39 > 0:10:42so we can go in and arrest the person selling the counterfeit software.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47The police and Trading Standards wait in an unmarked car.
0:10:47 > 0:10:51Private investigator Julian waits to meet the suspects in his own car,
0:10:52 > 0:10:54in another part of the car park.
0:10:54 > 0:10:56No-one's sure whether they'll turn up.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59RADIO: 'We're going to view the CCTV and give you a call.
0:11:00 > 0:11:03Time is ticking, and it doesn't look good.
0:11:04 > 0:11:05After three hours of waiting,
0:11:06 > 0:11:09just as the team are about to call off the operation, there is news.
0:11:09 > 0:11:12We've just taken a call from our colleague
0:11:12 > 0:11:16to let us know the target is on his way.
0:11:16 > 0:11:18And it looks like one of the suspects
0:11:18 > 0:11:20has turned up alone to do the deal.
0:11:20 > 0:11:25Julian gets into the suspect's car on the other side of the car park.
0:11:25 > 0:11:27He's pretending to be the customer.
0:11:27 > 0:11:28That one.
0:11:28 > 0:11:30Him in the Focus.
0:11:30 > 0:11:34And once the deal's done, the police spring into action.
0:11:34 > 0:11:36He's got the disc.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53Basically I've just been supplied with a disc,
0:11:53 > 0:11:56a blank disc, which I believe to be Autodata.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59Obviously we'll take that back and check it to make sure what's on it.
0:11:59 > 0:12:00Paid £80.
0:12:00 > 0:12:05I was told to ring a lady at 8pm tonight
0:12:05 > 0:12:07who would give me instructions to install it on my computer.
0:12:07 > 0:12:09So we've got her details.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11At the moment this is the guy who delivered it,
0:12:11 > 0:12:15we believe this to be the partner of the person who I spoke to earlier.
0:12:15 > 0:12:18The Autodata seller has been arrested
0:12:18 > 0:12:20and he knows he's in serious trouble.
0:12:31 > 0:12:33And the policeman is suspicious
0:12:33 > 0:12:37that he been warning someone on his mobile when he was arrested.
0:12:39 > 0:12:41Pardon?
0:12:42 > 0:12:44- Just someone.- Just someone.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47- Yeah, just someone.- Who's that? - It doesn't matter who it was.
0:12:47 > 0:12:50The car is searched thoroughly.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54Julian and the team think their operation today has been a success.
0:12:54 > 0:12:58Very pleased we've identified both subjects now, which is great.
0:12:58 > 0:13:01We've recovered quite a bit of evidence which will be processed.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04The couple involved will be prosecuted.
0:13:04 > 0:13:06And more of these types of operations
0:13:06 > 0:13:08are going to be carried out in the future.
0:13:17 > 0:13:20It used to be that if you did a bit of cooking you just had knives,
0:13:20 > 0:13:25but thanks to celebrity chefs that's not enough for most of us any more.
0:13:25 > 0:13:28We have to have professional chef's knives like this one.
0:13:28 > 0:13:30Very expensive.
0:13:30 > 0:13:31But then all of these,
0:13:31 > 0:13:34well, as you might expect from the Fake Britain house,
0:13:34 > 0:13:37they're all fakes, and they're not cheap either.
0:13:37 > 0:13:38You've guessed it,
0:13:38 > 0:13:43when it comes to chef's knives, fakers are carving up the market.
0:13:45 > 0:13:47All of these knives are fake.
0:13:47 > 0:13:50If they were real they'd be worth thousands.
0:13:50 > 0:13:52Surrey Police discovered them by chance
0:13:52 > 0:13:54when they stopped a suspicious van.
0:13:54 > 0:13:58The police arrested the driver, Michael Orchard,
0:13:58 > 0:14:00and passed the knives onto Rob Charlton
0:14:01 > 0:14:03at West Berkshire Trading Standards.
0:14:04 > 0:14:06We've never dealt with anything,
0:14:06 > 0:14:09with counterfeit stuff such as this before.
0:14:09 > 0:14:12I was absolutely shocked, firstly the volume of it.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16But also surprised at how much this stuff actually costs.
0:14:16 > 0:14:18This is top of the range stuff and very expensive.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21A set of knives like these if they were the real thing
0:14:21 > 0:14:24would sell for over £1,000.
0:14:26 > 0:14:28Richard Foster from London, loves cooking
0:14:28 > 0:14:32and thought buying top-notch knives would be a sound investment.
0:14:32 > 0:14:35He decided a set from Global would be perfect.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38The reason for wanting a good quality knife set
0:14:38 > 0:14:40was because they would last.
0:14:40 > 0:14:43I would expect these to last a lifetime almost,
0:14:43 > 0:14:46so in reality I don't think they are actually that expensive.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49It does make a difference when you're cooking undoubtedly.
0:14:49 > 0:14:51And it's like a precision piece of engineering.
0:14:51 > 0:14:55Richard searched online and found the set he wanted
0:14:55 > 0:14:57from an independent seller.
0:14:57 > 0:14:59He was selling them as liquidated stock,
0:14:59 > 0:15:00I think he mentioned he was a chef.
0:15:00 > 0:15:06So I bought the set of nine knives and a sharpener for £470.
0:15:06 > 0:15:10I had absolutely no reason to think there was anything untoward.
0:15:10 > 0:15:14The knives he had his eye on retail on the high street for over £1,000,
0:15:14 > 0:15:17so Richard thought he was getting a fantastic deal.
0:15:17 > 0:15:22It wasn't long before a set similar to these arrived.
0:15:22 > 0:15:25When I got the knives I was very excited.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28I opened them up and I showed my wife a tomato
0:15:28 > 0:15:30in lots of anticipation.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32"Watch this, it's going to be amazing".
0:15:32 > 0:15:35And it just bent in half and it didn't even cut through the tomato.
0:15:35 > 0:15:38So there was clearly something wrong there.
0:15:38 > 0:15:40That excitement was quickly blown away.
0:15:40 > 0:15:44Richard had expected the knife to be extremely sharp.
0:15:44 > 0:15:46Becoming suspicious, he looked a bit closer
0:15:46 > 0:15:47at exactly what he'd bought.
0:15:48 > 0:15:49The quality of them didn't look quite right,
0:15:50 > 0:15:51the packaging didn't look that good.
0:15:51 > 0:15:54I suspected there was something wrong with them.
0:15:54 > 0:15:56And one thing in particular didn't add up.
0:15:58 > 0:15:59The giveaway for me was the handles,
0:15:59 > 0:16:01there were some black spots that were painted.
0:16:01 > 0:16:05And it looked somebody had filled it in with a marker pen.
0:16:05 > 0:16:08The marks weren't central.
0:16:08 > 0:16:12I wouldn't expect that for a £1,000 set of knives.
0:16:13 > 0:16:15I suspected they were probably fake.
0:16:15 > 0:16:18Convinced they weren't the genuine knives he'd paid for,
0:16:19 > 0:16:20Richard contacted the seller.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22I was annoyed, I sent him an email,
0:16:23 > 0:16:25I disputed the fact they were genuine.
0:16:25 > 0:16:29He said they were, he said was a chef and he'd sold lots of them,
0:16:29 > 0:16:30I think 20 sets.
0:16:30 > 0:16:31Insisting they were real,
0:16:32 > 0:16:34the seller wouldn't give Richard his money back.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37But, Richard wasn't going to give up that easily.
0:16:38 > 0:16:42The follow up email I told him I would send them to Global Knives
0:16:42 > 0:16:43to see if they were counterfeit.
0:16:44 > 0:16:48The seller then agreed to a refund if the knives were sent back.
0:16:48 > 0:16:50That's exactly what Richard did
0:16:50 > 0:16:53and it confirmed his suspicions that they were fake.
0:16:53 > 0:16:55After this bad experience,
0:16:55 > 0:16:59Richard forked out for a real set and was amazed at the difference.
0:16:59 > 0:17:01You can literally lay them on top something
0:17:01 > 0:17:03and they just go straight through.
0:17:03 > 0:17:05So the quality was completely different.
0:17:07 > 0:17:10People who sell the fakes also target restaurants.
0:17:10 > 0:17:14We took some of the fakes to Cicchetti restaurant in London
0:17:14 > 0:17:17to show them to well-known chef Aldo Zilli.
0:17:17 > 0:17:23I never experienced fake knives until 10 years ago in this country.
0:17:24 > 0:17:28You get the odd people that try to sell you things at the back door.
0:17:28 > 0:17:31We've got two knives here, one's fake and one's real.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34And the branding is much more prominent on the fake one.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37You know, because they want you really to believe it.
0:17:37 > 0:17:42The sharpness, this real one is, to the finger,
0:17:42 > 0:17:44is quite sharp.
0:17:44 > 0:17:45This is quite blunt.
0:17:46 > 0:17:47And then the noise.
0:17:48 > 0:17:50This is very noisy, this is nice and quiet.
0:17:50 > 0:17:51The weight,
0:17:51 > 0:17:54this is a lot heavier than the one that's fake.
0:17:56 > 0:17:58Of course, the proof is in the pudding. Or the starter.
0:17:58 > 0:18:00We haven't got time in the kitchen
0:18:00 > 0:18:04to be sharpening knives every 5 minutes.
0:18:04 > 0:18:05If this knife doesn't cut properly,
0:18:05 > 0:18:09then my finger will be part of this.
0:18:11 > 0:18:12This is the fake one.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16It doesn't feel as nice, doesn't feel as heavy.
0:18:19 > 0:18:20I can feel that I need to look
0:18:20 > 0:18:23because I'm not too confident with this one.
0:18:23 > 0:18:26Confidence is everything with a knife.
0:18:29 > 0:18:34Wusthof, a German company, has been manufacturing knives for 200 years.
0:18:34 > 0:18:36Their products are sold all over the world,
0:18:36 > 0:18:38including here, in Harrods.
0:18:39 > 0:18:42Paul Shelley from Wusthof was sent some of the fake knives
0:18:42 > 0:18:45found by the police in that van in Surrey.
0:18:46 > 0:18:49We opened the box, looked at the knives
0:18:49 > 0:18:51and were pretty gobsmacked with what we saw
0:18:51 > 0:18:53and felt a little bit sorry for, obviously,
0:18:54 > 0:18:56people that would be buying those sort of items
0:18:56 > 0:18:58because the quality and craftsmanship just wasn't there.
0:18:58 > 0:19:01While the fake knives might look very similar,
0:19:01 > 0:19:04Wusthof say the fakers can't reproduce the real thing,
0:19:04 > 0:19:08which has gone through dozens of traditional and expensive processes.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10All of them still manufactured in Germany,
0:19:10 > 0:19:16and that goes through a process of over 38 to 40 manufacturing steps.
0:19:16 > 0:19:19From the start, single blank of steel, to the end result.
0:19:21 > 0:19:24Rob Charlton from West Berkshire Trading Standards
0:19:24 > 0:19:26had started an investigation
0:19:26 > 0:19:29into what the van driver Michael Orchard had been up to.
0:19:29 > 0:19:33Orchard originally denied knowing anything about the fake knives.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36But Rob discovered some crucial evidence.
0:19:38 > 0:19:40These invoices that were seized by the police,
0:19:40 > 0:19:44related to individuals that were in the forces.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47So clearly what he was doing was going onto military bases
0:19:47 > 0:19:48and selling this equipment.
0:19:49 > 0:19:51Rob also obtained security photos
0:19:51 > 0:19:53proving that Orchard had been to those bases.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56That was enough to prosecute him.
0:19:56 > 0:19:58Michael Orchard pleaded guilty in court
0:19:58 > 0:20:01to three charges under the Trademarks Act.
0:20:02 > 0:20:04But although Rob and his team stopped Orchard,
0:20:04 > 0:20:08they have no idea how many fake knives are still out there.
0:20:16 > 0:20:18Earlier, we saw the horrifying story
0:20:18 > 0:20:20of young Gabriel Loxham
0:20:20 > 0:20:22who suffered a terrible reaction
0:20:22 > 0:20:24to a fake henna decoration
0:20:24 > 0:20:26that was put on his skin while he was on holiday.
0:20:27 > 0:20:29But black henna designs aren't just available
0:20:30 > 0:20:31to holiday makers in Europe.
0:20:32 > 0:20:34They're freely available on the high street in the UK,
0:20:35 > 0:20:39to customers who don't realise they are dangerous and illegal.
0:20:42 > 0:20:45Architecture student Rozghar from London
0:20:45 > 0:20:48wanted to get henna decorations for the first time,
0:20:48 > 0:20:52and decided to get them applied professionally at a salon.
0:20:52 > 0:20:55She's asked for her identity to be disguised.
0:20:55 > 0:20:58It was Eid so I wanted to go to a shop
0:20:58 > 0:21:00and have the henna done.
0:21:01 > 0:21:03I decided to do the black henna
0:21:03 > 0:21:05because I thought it was more dramatic,
0:21:06 > 0:21:08it's more a nicer colour and darker.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10Rozghar was happy with the result.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12Her designs had a mixture of real brown henna
0:21:13 > 0:21:15and fake black henna outlines.
0:21:15 > 0:21:19But within a day, her pretty design had turned ugly.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25After 24 hours of getting the black henna done
0:21:25 > 0:21:27the reaction had started.
0:21:28 > 0:21:35It was getting very red, itchy, burning feel to it.
0:21:35 > 0:21:37You can see that her skin has reacted
0:21:37 > 0:21:39to the black fake henna outlines,
0:21:39 > 0:21:43while the brown henna is just fading away naturally as it should.
0:21:44 > 0:21:47After that then it started to get blistery,
0:21:47 > 0:21:53the pain was on going throughout nights and days.
0:21:56 > 0:21:59The pain, it was too much, you know.
0:22:01 > 0:22:04When the pain and itchiness got too severe Rozghar went to the doctor,
0:22:05 > 0:22:09but the medication she was prescribed didn't help.
0:22:09 > 0:22:14It was all over both my arms, the itchiness all over.
0:22:14 > 0:22:21My hands and arms were burning, I felt like it was almost burning.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23Whenever I did apply something,
0:22:24 > 0:22:26it would stop it for maybe a couple of hours
0:22:26 > 0:22:28and then it would start all over again.
0:22:29 > 0:22:32And a few days later, things became even worse.
0:22:32 > 0:22:34The illegal ingredient PPD that's
0:22:35 > 0:22:38found in black henna had poisoned Rozghar.
0:22:39 > 0:22:42On the eighth day my left hand started to swell
0:22:42 > 0:22:45so then I realised I should go to the hospital.
0:22:45 > 0:22:49The doctor saw it and obviously was amazed at how bad it was.
0:22:49 > 0:22:52For two weeks she was in agonising pain
0:22:52 > 0:22:55and she may now be scarred for life.
0:22:55 > 0:22:58I don't know if it will go away,
0:22:58 > 0:22:59it may do, it may not.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02It was just terrible, it was too much.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07As a result of Rozghar's appalling injury,
0:23:07 > 0:23:10Kari Aslam and his team from Newham Trading Standards
0:23:10 > 0:23:13tackle the salon that applied her henna.
0:23:15 > 0:23:18Straightaway Kari finds what he's looking for.
0:23:18 > 0:23:21Yeah, because this is black henna we're going to have to seize this.
0:23:22 > 0:23:23Our customers buy them,
0:23:23 > 0:23:25they don't seem to have a problem with the henna.
0:23:26 > 0:23:28Or is it because it's black henna that you're taking it?
0:23:28 > 0:23:30It says there on there it is black henna.
0:23:33 > 0:23:36They find confirmation in the bookings diary
0:23:36 > 0:23:38that Rozghar was treated here.
0:23:42 > 0:23:45The team take a look in the salon area where the henna is applied
0:23:46 > 0:23:48and are horrified by the posters on display.
0:23:50 > 0:23:54It seems even children have black henna put on their skin here.
0:23:55 > 0:23:56Children as well.
0:23:56 > 0:23:58Yes, but they have to get a consent form.
0:23:58 > 0:24:00We usually say don't put it on for kids
0:24:00 > 0:24:02so most parents don't put it on for the kids,
0:24:02 > 0:24:04they just get the orange one done.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07But some of this black henna has gone onto kids?
0:24:07 > 0:24:09Have you applied it to any children?
0:24:09 > 0:24:11People have signed it, yeah.
0:24:11 > 0:24:13And have you got that documentation?
0:24:13 > 0:24:15It's on the same thing, it's written next to it,
0:24:15 > 0:24:18but if it's for a kid it will say parents signed for.
0:24:18 > 0:24:20The shop seems to be fully aware
0:24:20 > 0:24:24that the black henna could be dangerous when applied to the skin.
0:24:26 > 0:24:30The business has written notices on the wall as you can see here.
0:24:30 > 0:24:33We need to make further enquiries by speaking to the owner
0:24:33 > 0:24:35who's unfortunately not here today.
0:24:35 > 0:24:37It shows to us that they know about the dangers
0:24:38 > 0:24:40but they're still carrying on despite.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42So this makes it a little bit worse really for the owner.
0:24:43 > 0:24:44The salon selling the fake henna
0:24:45 > 0:24:47and offering to apply it to customers' skin
0:24:47 > 0:24:51is now under investigation and could face prosecution.
0:24:52 > 0:24:55Newham Trading Standards are cracking down on the shops
0:24:55 > 0:24:57that sell the dangerous henna.
0:24:58 > 0:25:01Today they're on their way to a busy shopping area.
0:25:02 > 0:25:04I'm from Newham Council Trading Standards.
0:25:04 > 0:25:07What we're here to do is look at black henna paste products
0:25:07 > 0:25:10and we do know you're selling some down there.
0:25:10 > 0:25:12You might also know that it's illegal in this country
0:25:13 > 0:25:14to sell black henna paste.
0:25:14 > 0:25:17- Not legal?- No, it's not legal, it's illegal.
0:25:20 > 0:25:23The store is searched and Nick and Kari are shocked
0:25:23 > 0:25:27to find a huge number of black henna products for sale.
0:25:27 > 0:25:30Without knowing what's in there we've no idea of knowing
0:25:30 > 0:25:32what the risks are to the user,
0:25:32 > 0:25:34what kind of reactions may be taken to it.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37The fake henna just keeps coming
0:25:37 > 0:25:41and often the packaging isn't even in English.
0:25:41 > 0:25:45Consumer can't see what it is, they can't even tell what's inside it.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48It could be black henna paste, could be anything in there.
0:25:49 > 0:25:50Yes, no ingredients list.
0:25:50 > 0:25:53Well, it could be an ingredients list but I don't speak Arabic.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55There seems to be another problem
0:25:55 > 0:25:59as Kari spots some dubious-looking bottles of perfume.
0:25:59 > 0:26:03As Nick predicted, one form of fakery has led to another.
0:26:21 > 0:26:25In the back of the shop, Nick finds a fake perfume operation hidden away.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28Now, it doesn't seem likely
0:26:28 > 0:26:31that brands such as Dior and Chanel
0:26:31 > 0:26:34would distribute their perfume in these bottles.
0:26:35 > 0:26:42That's Obsession, and Paris and various other imitation perfumes.
0:26:42 > 0:26:43All with the names on there
0:26:44 > 0:26:47of what they are presumably meant to smell like.
0:26:50 > 0:26:52Not quite sure if that does smell like Obsession,
0:26:53 > 0:26:54I don't profess to be a connoisseur!
0:26:55 > 0:26:58But nonetheless quite clearly
0:26:58 > 0:26:59a lot of this all being used
0:26:59 > 0:27:02to top up the sort of counterfeit fragrances
0:27:02 > 0:27:05and the officers will be seizing those as well.
0:27:06 > 0:27:08Not normally the kind of thing you store in a toilet.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10Well it's eau de toilette, Nick.
0:27:10 > 0:27:14He fetches a shop worker to get an explanation
0:27:14 > 0:27:15but he blames the boss.
0:27:17 > 0:27:21Could you explain to me about this, please?
0:27:23 > 0:27:24What do you do with them?
0:27:34 > 0:27:37Nick and Kari seize the bottles, all 93 of them.
0:27:38 > 0:27:41This shop is now in serious trouble.
0:27:41 > 0:27:45Hope that's replica of the perfume rather than actual poison.
0:27:47 > 0:27:49The shop worker is still trying to convince Nick
0:27:49 > 0:27:51that it's not fake perfume.
0:27:54 > 0:27:58Don't sound very Arabian to me, Dunhill, or Cool Water.
0:27:58 > 0:28:02With their huge haul of henna and their fragrant fakes,
0:28:02 > 0:28:03It's bag it and tag it
0:28:03 > 0:28:06for Nick, Kari and the team from Newham Trading Standards,
0:28:07 > 0:28:10as hundreds of dangerous fakes are taken off the shelves.
0:28:17 > 0:28:20That's all from Fake Britain today, bye bye.
