0:00:03 > 0:00:06Right now I'm prepared to guess that there are millions of you

0:00:06 > 0:00:09flicking through those glossy, holiday brochures.

0:00:09 > 0:00:10Because it's that time of year again,

0:00:10 > 0:00:14when we all decide where we're going to spend our well-earned breaks.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16# Sun is shining in the sky

0:00:16 > 0:00:20# There ain't a cloud in sight. #

0:00:20 > 0:00:23We all put our trust and our hard-earned cash in the hands

0:00:23 > 0:00:26of the holiday industry, hoping it delivers on its promise.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28But on occasion, things can go wrong

0:00:28 > 0:00:31and that can end up turning a dream break into a nightmare.

0:00:32 > 0:00:36The last memory I have - everyone's smiling, happy.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Next thing is I woke up in hospital.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44We were on the cruise ship. My nan suddenly had a stroke.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46From uncovering the bad...

0:00:46 > 0:00:49My terror is that a child could fall in and not be seen.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52..to highlighting the good.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54I don't think I need to say anything about this.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56It's breathtaking.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58We are the Holiday Hit squad

0:00:58 > 0:01:01and it's our mission to ensure you avoid all of those holiday

0:01:01 > 0:01:05horrors and really get the best out of your annual break.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14Coming up on today's programme, we're on call at a Turkish A&E.

0:01:14 > 0:01:19Four breaks. You made a proper jump of it, didn't you? Yeah.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23There are thrills and some spills as Joe and I take

0:01:23 > 0:01:26- on a challenge to find the perfect weekend for adventure lovers. - Home...

0:01:28 > 0:01:30- You can't have more fun in a wetsuit. - '..and away.'

0:01:35 > 0:01:38And I'll be investigating whether or not

0:01:38 > 0:01:41we really are as safe as we expect to be on a safari holiday.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46They're completely chilled but put one foot out of this vehicle

0:01:46 > 0:01:49and you'd have the attention of every lion there instantly.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54But first I check into a hotel that's been winding up more than

0:01:54 > 0:01:55a few British guests.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Whether we're holidaying on a paradise island

0:02:07 > 0:02:09or in a bustling metropolis,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12there's one thing that will always scupper our fun.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17If our hotel sucks our holiday will too.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20# Baby, please don't go

0:02:20 > 0:02:21# Baby, please don't go. #

0:02:21 > 0:02:24'That's why I'm pulling back the covers...'

0:02:24 > 0:02:26That's really horrible.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28'..and rattling cages...'

0:02:28 > 0:02:31I'm worried. This is a hospital trip.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35'..at some of the hotels that have been driving you crackers.'

0:02:35 > 0:02:37What would you say to people looking at coming to this hotel?

0:02:37 > 0:02:39- Don't bother.- Don't come.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43'And today I'm in one of our favourite holiday destinations.'

0:02:43 > 0:02:46# Sunny

0:02:46 > 0:02:50# Yesterday my life was filled with rain. #

0:02:50 > 0:02:53One of the world's smallest countries,

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Malta is a jewel in the Med. Lying just south of Sicily, it

0:02:57 > 0:03:01attracts nearly half a million Brits every year.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05Malta may be a tiny island but it has a big history and, of course,

0:03:05 > 0:03:06very strong links with the UK.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09English is one of the two official languages here

0:03:09 > 0:03:11and it has a long season.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Lovely and warm until late in the year which is why

0:03:14 > 0:03:17thousands of Brits come back here time and time again.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22But recently, one thing on this island has been leaving some

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Brits cold.

0:03:24 > 0:03:25# I'm gonna raise a fuss

0:03:25 > 0:03:27# I'm gonna raise a holler. #

0:03:27 > 0:03:31With rooms costing over £100 per night,

0:03:31 > 0:03:35the four-star Cavalieri used to have a great reputation.

0:03:35 > 0:03:40And with its idyllic location in the popular resort of St Julian's Bay,

0:03:40 > 0:03:42it's easy to see why.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46But recently, the number of unhappy guests has risen dramatically.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48# Sometimes I wonder what I'm going to do

0:03:48 > 0:03:53# But there ain't no cure for the summertime blues. #

0:03:56 > 0:04:00The bathroom had four cracked tiles on the floor.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04The shower curtain was supposed to be beige

0:04:04 > 0:04:08but at the bottom it was black.

0:04:08 > 0:04:13- The staff, most were indifferent. - There was this huge hair.

0:04:13 > 0:04:18Obviously a lady with long hair had been in there before.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23It was on the floor and I didn't touch it. I left it.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25It was there for three days.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28I've stayed in many four-star hotels

0:04:28 > 0:04:30and I would say that was the worst one.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34So is this once grand four-star on the slide?

0:04:35 > 0:04:40The management are unhappy with the reviews too, so have invited us

0:04:40 > 0:04:44in to help them spot what's rubbing the clientele up the wrong way.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46Joe Crowley, checking in, please.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50The Cavalieri has been described by one guest as

0:04:50 > 0:04:52'one of the dirtiest hotels I've ever seen'.

0:04:52 > 0:04:53Right.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58'So my room comes as something of a surprise.'

0:04:59 > 0:05:01It looks pretty clean.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03First impressions.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Looks like they've cleaned the floor properly.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12And the bed sheets...

0:05:12 > 0:05:14importantly, look very clean.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16Doesn't seem so bad, at all.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20'But it seems not everyone's experience is as sparkling as mine.'

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Two fellow Brits I've met who don't wish to be filmed are

0:05:25 > 0:05:28so disgruntled with their room they've asked to be moved.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31They've let us check out the room and I can see why they're not happy.

0:05:31 > 0:05:37'Mouldy walls and dirty linen is not exactly a four-star experience.'

0:05:38 > 0:05:40It's grubby, it's stained.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42That is really disgusting.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46'But what's worse, the new room they've been offered,

0:05:46 > 0:05:50'comes with the kind of extras no-one would welcome.'

0:05:50 > 0:05:52They've come straight in here and quickly

0:05:52 > 0:05:54and quite rightly had a look at the bedding.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58Because that's one of the biggest problems in the room they've currently got. And...

0:05:59 > 0:06:01I dread to think what that is.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04'I've heard of leaving a chocolate on your pillow,

0:06:04 > 0:06:06'but this takes the biscuit.'

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Clean bedding, that's what people expect

0:06:09 > 0:06:12when they come to a four-star hotel

0:06:12 > 0:06:15and the hotel doesn't seem to be on top of those details at the moment.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22And other Brits have also spotted the hotel's fading grandeur.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25It's got fabulous potential.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29But it's become tired and lack of attention to detail.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33There's a few beds that are broken. It could be absolutely ideal.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36It's got everything going for it.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39But it's let down by poor attention to maintenance.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44Steve is worried it'll be the guests, not the hotel, that'll fall

0:06:44 > 0:06:46flat on their face.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48As you can see this is fairly slimy.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52- When it gets really wet it becomes lethal.- And this slime has built up.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57- It's been there several weeks.- Have you seen anyone have problems here?

0:06:57 > 0:06:58I did see someone slip yesterday.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01They didn't actually go down but they could have gone down

0:07:01 > 0:07:03and quite easily broken something.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06This is one slip-up too many.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12Time to call in the cavalry.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14Welcome back to Dr Lisa Ackerly,

0:07:14 > 0:07:17an expert inspector with more than 20 years' experience

0:07:17 > 0:07:21riding to the rescue of establishments like this.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26- Shall we start there and have a look at the beds?- Yeah.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28I don't like the look of this at all. I think it's horrible.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31We've uncovered more dirty bedding.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33'Not looking good so far.'

0:07:34 > 0:07:39- So, we've got a stocked minibar. - And we have some mould.- At the back.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43And at the bottom it's all a bit cracked.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45Let's have a look at the ice.

0:07:45 > 0:07:51- Grim.- People would be using this in their drinks. So it's not very nice.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54'I certainly wouldn't want a drink from this minibar.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58'Nor would I fancy a dip in the hotel pool.'

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Have a look at that. That really is disgusting.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04- A whole ecosystem going on here. - It's actually just

0:08:04 > 0:08:06coming off in your hands.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09We've got slime, body fat.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12We've got dirt, we've got a biofilm of bacteria.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15How long has it been like this? Surely, quite a while.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18- Weeks or months. Maybe years. - A whole season.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22Nobody's bothered to get in there and clean it. Astonishing.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Look at it.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26That doesn't fill me with confidence.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29So what horrors might be lurking in the indoor pool?

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Right, this looks lovely.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37It may look lovely but appearances can be deceptive.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40'In Lisa's bag of tricks she has a kit for testing the water's

0:08:40 > 0:08:42'chlorine levels.'

0:08:43 > 0:08:47Really good for a quick indication. Give that a wiggle in the water.

0:08:47 > 0:08:51- I can see it change colour immediately.- Look on the scale.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55And you can see that's greater than 10 parts per million.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57The top of the scale there would close the pool.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59And this is off the scale.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02It is so off the scale, I've never seen anything like it before.

0:09:02 > 0:09:03Wow. Really?

0:09:03 > 0:09:08I'm only able to estimate but I reckon around 70 parts per million.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12- Of chlorine. - And it should be one or two.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16- What would happen to me if I went in here?- It could irritate your skin.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Basically, you should not let anyone swim

0:09:19 > 0:09:22if it's more than 10 parts per million.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25So we're seven times over that in the estimate I'm able to do

0:09:25 > 0:09:27with the kit I've got.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29- We need to make sure this is closed. - We do.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31It would be terrible if someone jumped in there.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35Chlorine in low doses is necessary to kill dangerous organisms

0:09:35 > 0:09:37such as E-coli.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40But it is still a highly hazardous substance. Swimming in an

0:09:40 > 0:09:44overly chlorinated pool would be akin to swimming in diluted bleach.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48Side effects could include nausea and vomiting,

0:09:48 > 0:09:51it could make your eyes and throat sting and burn,

0:09:51 > 0:09:54not to mention causing you to cough and wheeze.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58This is so serious that we need to take immediate action.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00We've been doing some tests on the pools

0:10:00 > 0:10:04and the inside pool has too much chlorine in it. It's off the scale.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07And it's not safe for people to swim in.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09- Thank you for letting us know. - Thank you, Joe.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16Thankfully they've taken our advice and the pool has been closed.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19But there are more signs of decline at the Cavalieri,

0:10:19 > 0:10:24'and later we'll discover that's it's not just the water that's overdosed.'

0:10:24 > 0:10:28I've no idea what killed him. I'm pretty sure it wasn't starvation.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Gluttony may well have been on the list.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38Hopefully you're never going to know they're there

0:10:38 > 0:10:42but in resorts around the world, backstage as it were, there's a

0:10:42 > 0:10:46dedicated army of professionals who are always on stand-by to pick

0:10:46 > 0:10:49up the pieces just in case something goes wrong.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51# I need a hero

0:10:51 > 0:10:53# I'm holding out for a hero... #

0:10:53 > 0:10:56I've been following emergency crews all over Europe,

0:10:56 > 0:10:59and today I'm feeling the heat in a Turkish A&E.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02# The heat is on

0:11:02 > 0:11:05# The heat is on-on. #

0:11:05 > 0:11:09I've come to Marmaris, on Turkey's South West coast, to get

0:11:09 > 0:11:12an idea of what happens when sunseeking Brits end up

0:11:12 > 0:11:16needing urgent hospital treatment during a Mediterranean holiday.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23I have an access-all-areas pass to one of the busiest hospitals in

0:11:23 > 0:11:29the area, the Ahu Hetman, a private hospital in the heart of town.

0:11:29 > 0:11:35In 2012 alone they treated 1,308 British casualties.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39And just about all of them went through this door right

0:11:39 > 0:11:42here into Accident and Emergency.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45'The problems the doctors encounter...'

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Where's the pain? All down there?

0:11:47 > 0:11:48'Are many...'

0:11:48 > 0:11:52Turns out I had a cyst on my ovary and it was twisted.

0:11:52 > 0:11:53'..and varied.'

0:11:53 > 0:11:56- You know the plastic bit? - On your goggles?

0:11:56 > 0:12:00Yeah. It scratched down my eye.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02But one of the most common complaints at this Turkish

0:12:02 > 0:12:05hospital is tummy trouble.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09A staggering 66% of adults in the UK have experienced

0:12:09 > 0:12:13digestive problems while on holiday. Contaminated water, food poisoning

0:12:13 > 0:12:18or just over-indulgence can all cause problems

0:12:18 > 0:12:21and Scottish holidaymaker Linda Watson has just been admitted

0:12:21 > 0:12:23with severe abdominal pain.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27- When did this start? To get like this?- Friday night, Saturday.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29They've stuck you on a drip already.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Because you've been feeling quite wretched up until now.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35I've been drinking plenty of fluid but it's just going.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39- It must be a bit worrying for you, as well?- Aye, it is.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42If you don't see them getting better, they get worse and worse.

0:12:42 > 0:12:47- Thank goodness for health insurance. - I would recommend it to anyone.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Dehydration is a potentially dangerous side effect

0:12:52 > 0:12:56of an upset stomach but in high summer temperatures it can affect

0:12:56 > 0:12:59us all. So to avoid its debilitating

0:12:59 > 0:13:04effects, aim to consume two to three litres of water a day. More if

0:13:04 > 0:13:08you are exercising or out and about in the heat of a hot summer's day.

0:13:15 > 0:13:19Back in A&E, the stream of casualties continues.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23It looks as if you've been in the wars. What have you done?

0:13:23 > 0:13:25Broken me wrist.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Broken bones are an unexpectedly common

0:13:28 > 0:13:31complaint at hospitals in holiday hotspots.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35Often as a result of exuberant and exciting activities.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Crikey! That is a pretty impressive cast.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42'But as Shirley Hanger discovered to her cost, you don't

0:13:42 > 0:13:46'have to be taking part in a dangerous sport to break a bone.'

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Four breaks. You made a proper job of it, didn't you?

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Yeah. Good job.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54- How did you do that? - I slipped on a wet floor.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59Slipping on wet surfaces is one of the most common

0:13:59 > 0:14:00causes of fractures on holiday.

0:14:02 > 0:14:03Marble floors are commonplace

0:14:03 > 0:14:05in foreign hotels and apartments.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11Add wet feet from swimming or impaired balance

0:14:11 > 0:14:14and we can often find ourselves with a bruised backside.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Or as in Shirley's case, much worse.

0:14:18 > 0:14:22That's an amazing piece of engineering, isn't it?

0:14:22 > 0:14:24- How long did that take? - About three hours.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28Shirley has had a lot of potentially expensive surgery.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31And she's a long way from home.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33- Please tell me you were insured? - Yes, I was.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35It would have been a nightmare otherwise, wouldn't it?

0:14:35 > 0:14:36It would, yeah.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41Without insurance, Shirley would have had ended up

0:14:41 > 0:14:44paying for a very expensive holiday.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47Around the world medical costs vary enormously,

0:14:47 > 0:14:49with the United States topping the chart.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52A broken leg there could cost as much as an average Brit's

0:14:52 > 0:14:56annual salary and here in Turkey, medical care is far from cheap.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00So always make sure that you are adequately covered.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03One thing you must do, when applying for travel insurance,

0:15:03 > 0:15:07is to be absolutely honest about any pre-existing condition.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11If you're not, and you leave it off, and find yourself in hospital

0:15:11 > 0:15:15being treated for that condition, the insurance company will not pay

0:15:15 > 0:15:18and however much you may have had to pay as an extra,

0:15:18 > 0:15:21if you're not covered and you have to pay up,

0:15:21 > 0:15:24you can bet your boots you'll have to add at least a couple of noughts to the figure.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34Now, don't go thinking that Holiday Hit Squad is

0:15:34 > 0:15:38all about holiday hell - it's not.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40We've got holiday heaven too.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45Throughout this series, I've been asking Helen and Joe to come up

0:15:45 > 0:15:47with great ideas for holidays,

0:15:47 > 0:15:50not just abroad but at home where two in three of us

0:15:50 > 0:15:53now regularly take a break in the UK.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56# Anything you can do I can do better... #

0:15:56 > 0:15:59Each week I've been giving Helen and Joe a theme,

0:15:59 > 0:16:02a budget and a challenge.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05To find out if Britain can compete with the rest of the world...

0:16:08 > 0:16:10From city breaks...

0:16:10 > 0:16:12I will be amazed if Joe can top this.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14..to beach treats...

0:16:14 > 0:16:17Surely the perfect family beach holiday.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19They're going head-to-head in a

0:16:19 > 0:16:22battle of vacation versus staycation...

0:16:22 > 0:16:26You'd have to go a long way round the world to beat this!

0:16:26 > 0:16:29Tonight, a holiday for the thrill-seekers among us.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31# Thrill me... #

0:16:31 > 0:16:34I've given Helen and Joe a budget of a grand each to create a long

0:16:34 > 0:16:38weekend for two people filled with thrills and spills.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41This week I'm fighting for the foreign field trip,

0:16:41 > 0:16:45so with a wonderful wide world to choose from, where have I picked?

0:16:47 > 0:16:49Ahhhhh!

0:16:51 > 0:16:55DRAMATIC MUSIC

0:16:56 > 0:16:58Epic Iceland.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01It's just a three hour flight away, and it's like another planet,

0:17:01 > 0:17:04let alone another country.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06Everything screams adventure.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08It's just outside the Arctic Circle,

0:17:08 > 0:17:10populated by the descendants of Vikings,

0:17:10 > 0:17:13and check out the landscape. These aren't special effects!

0:17:13 > 0:17:16And if it's thrills you want, then Iceland has

0:17:16 > 0:17:18an abundance of activities -

0:17:18 > 0:17:21underwater, on the ice, in raging torrents,

0:17:21 > 0:17:27anything you can think of you can do in this magical, alien landscape.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32Iceland is all well and good but why go all that way when in

0:17:32 > 0:17:36Britain we are lucky enough to have the Scottish Highlands?

0:17:36 > 0:17:39# In a big country dreams stay with you... #

0:17:39 > 0:17:43That's right, this week I'm fighting on the home front and I think

0:17:43 > 0:17:48Scotland more than holds its own, if you're seeking a thrilling break.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51Mighty mountains, gargantuan glens,

0:17:51 > 0:17:53and larger-than-life lochs

0:17:53 > 0:17:57all hold the key to an adventure packed holiday.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01Look at that. It's basically God's playground.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05I've found a way of exploring it with a little motorised help.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16This activity is run on a 50,000 acre estate

0:18:16 > 0:18:18so you can speed along rivers, head to the hills,

0:18:18 > 0:18:21or race through ancient Caledonian forests.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25If you wanted proof that Scotland has world-class scenery,

0:18:25 > 0:18:27then look no further.

0:18:27 > 0:18:31Talk about a buzz. I'm as high as a kite.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36That was fantastic.

0:18:36 > 0:18:41Anyone who comes here can have a go, you just have to be 12 or older,

0:18:41 > 0:18:44they even had an 80-year-old woman doing this.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Whether you want heart pumping adrenaline action or

0:18:47 > 0:18:50just use it as way to see this beautiful scenery,

0:18:50 > 0:18:53I would thoroughly advise that when you come to Scotland,

0:18:53 > 0:18:55on an adventure holiday, you give this a go.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00I can go riding through the wild landscape too, Joe,

0:19:00 > 0:19:02but my thrills have got the cute factor.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Ready, guys? Hey!

0:19:05 > 0:19:07# Walking the dog... #

0:19:10 > 0:19:14My guides do this in all sorts of landscapes - they'll usually

0:19:14 > 0:19:18do it on snow or ice up on the glaciers, where you can have

0:19:18 > 0:19:21a full-on adrenaline adventure, or if you want something slightly less

0:19:21 > 0:19:25extreme but just as exhilarating they'll use these buggies on grass.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30I've got the handbrake on.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35Kids and adults would love this - the huskies are wonderful

0:19:35 > 0:19:39animals, and it's a great way to connect with Iceland's nature.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41# Ice ice, baby... #

0:19:41 > 0:19:46And if it's wildlife you love, Iceland has it - there's fab

0:19:46 > 0:19:49horse riding on land or whale-watching on the water.

0:19:49 > 0:19:50PEOPLE CHEER

0:19:52 > 0:19:55There's no denying that Iceland's fantastic, Helen,

0:19:55 > 0:19:58but it doesn't have a monopoly on the great outdoors, you know.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00# You raise me up...

0:20:00 > 0:20:06# So I can stand on mountains... #

0:20:06 > 0:20:09Just look at that, the views are spectacular.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12There's one other thing to watch as well.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14There's a mountain bike trail that comes down.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17Here's someone coming now. Really popular with mountain bikers.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21It's used in the Mountain Bike World Cup and it's fantastic to see people whizzing by

0:20:21 > 0:20:24as you sit comfortably above.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27But I'm not up here for the brilliant mountain biking.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30I've got a spot of alfresco indulgence planned...

0:20:32 > 0:20:35If you stay in the UK, you save money on flights,

0:20:35 > 0:20:39and you can treat yourself to a luxury hamper.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41And where would you want to eat this

0:20:41 > 0:20:45more than halfway up a Scottish mountain in the sunshine?!

0:20:45 > 0:20:47Stunning view, Joe,

0:20:47 > 0:20:51but just the oatcakes for company? Anyway, with the cost of

0:20:51 > 0:20:52living in Iceland being

0:20:52 > 0:20:55so high, my lunch won't be quite as lofty as yours.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57But I will be in good company... I think this is it.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01# You ain't nothing but a hound dog... #

0:21:01 > 0:21:06I've been tipped off about an Icelandic institution...

0:21:06 > 0:21:07These are good, yeah?

0:21:07 > 0:21:09These guys have come from America for a hotdog.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11That's the only reason they're in Iceland?! OK.

0:21:11 > 0:21:12Right.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18- Good, yeah.- Thumbs up.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21This board has lists of people who've allegedly been here.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24Elvis Presley's on there! Bill Clinton - there's a picture of him.

0:21:24 > 0:21:25He's definitely been here.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28If it's good enough for the King, it's good enough for me.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30It's good.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37It's not just the food and drink that are pricey here - the hotels

0:21:37 > 0:21:41are also considerably more expensive than the UK which means I've

0:21:41 > 0:21:44had to choose basic accommodation in order to stay in budget.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47I've booked a hostel in Reykjavik.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51I don't want to look cos I promised

0:21:51 > 0:21:55myself I'd never stay in a hostel again! But that was years ago.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57And this is nice.

0:21:57 > 0:22:03My berth in this four-bed room, works out from around £35 per night.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06It's modern and clean. It's basic, but it's on a budget

0:22:06 > 0:22:09so if you want to come somewhere like Reykjavik,

0:22:09 > 0:22:11somewhere like this is perfect.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15I like it, bagsy top bunk.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17That one's mine!

0:22:17 > 0:22:21I'm going to need a good night's sleep with what I've got planned.

0:22:22 > 0:22:27- Now, that is impressive.- Very good, but anything you can do, Helen...

0:22:27 > 0:22:30I've got the ultimate in thrills and spills to come.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34Being inside a waterfall is amazing!

0:22:37 > 0:22:42Still to come: how a safari holiday could end up driving you wild.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46I flew through the air into the top of a tree...

0:22:46 > 0:22:49And the parade of patients continues at the beach surgery.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51You've got pain on that side?

0:22:51 > 0:22:54What about on that side?

0:22:54 > 0:22:58First, I continue my inspection into that hotel that's driving Brits barmy.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10Judging by guests' reviews, the four-star Cavalieri hotel in Malta,

0:23:10 > 0:23:14may be slipping from its lofty perch.

0:23:14 > 0:23:18So expert inspector Dr Lisa Ackerley and I are on their case to

0:23:18 > 0:23:22try to make sure they don't let any more British holidaymakers down.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26They've made a few mistakes, they've allowed these peaches to come out -

0:23:26 > 0:23:28quite clearly they're inedible.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32One of the areas of concern to some former guests is the food,

0:23:32 > 0:23:34and I'm keen to investigate further.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40Lisa, in some of these online reviews there are a couple

0:23:40 > 0:23:44of complaints about not just food but its preparation,

0:23:44 > 0:23:48questioning some of the hygiene standards of the staff.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50I'm guessing they're referring to this.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54You can see into the kitchen here. This is the pool snack bar.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56- Yeah.- What do you make of it?

0:23:56 > 0:23:59From the outside I haven't been impressed, so I'm itching to

0:23:59 > 0:24:02get in there, there's lots of debris around.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06You don't need to be a hygiene expert to see it's quite dirty.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09If you look over there you can see those chips on the floor.

0:24:09 > 0:24:15And all round the edges. This is actually built up over some time.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22One on-line complainant reported an outbreak of sickness

0:24:22 > 0:24:26and diarrhoea affecting many guests. The hotel denied responsibility.

0:24:26 > 0:24:31But it's clear the state of this kitchen is far from acceptable.

0:24:36 > 0:24:42- This should be five degrees?- Yes, looking at five. Maximum, eight.

0:24:42 > 0:24:43The probe is saying...

0:24:43 > 0:24:4718. So that means the chicken is too warm so if there's any bacteria

0:24:47 > 0:24:50- on there, they'll be starting to grow.- OK.

0:24:50 > 0:24:55- We don't know when that was put in there.- So bad practice all round. - Yeah.- Bad practice.

0:24:55 > 0:24:59And everywhere we look, it's the same story...

0:24:59 > 0:25:02So dirty. Everything is...

0:25:02 > 0:25:05From what you've seen so far, how bad is their kitchen?

0:25:05 > 0:25:10Erm, it's filthy. So I reckon in the UK I'd be thinking about

0:25:10 > 0:25:14serving a hygiene improvement notice.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Look at the state of that chopping board.

0:25:16 > 0:25:20- That's a ready to eat chopping board.- Is there anything we can swab?

0:25:20 > 0:25:23The point of swabbing is, if you look at what seems to be a clean

0:25:23 > 0:25:25surface and check if it really is

0:25:25 > 0:25:28clean, but very little of this kitchen seems to be clean.

0:25:28 > 0:25:32The only thing which looks clean is the inside of these handles.

0:25:32 > 0:25:36- Probably because they're being touched quite a lot.- Good idea.

0:25:36 > 0:25:40To be fair, I'll take the bits the hands would touch.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42Which is all around here...

0:25:42 > 0:25:46- Quite a lot of dirt on. - Looks very grubby.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49This swab is a nice cheap and cheerful way of finding out

0:25:49 > 0:25:51whether there's been some protein

0:25:51 > 0:25:54left on a surface so it's quite useful in catering premises.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57The swab test detects protein which should not be

0:25:57 > 0:25:59present on a clean surface.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01If it goes green it's clean.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05Grey is dirty and purple is really dirty.

0:26:05 > 0:26:06As we can see, it isn't clean.

0:26:06 > 0:26:11In a kitchen you'd expect to get green on those surfaces.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15Or for example on a chopping board.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18- No chance we'd get green on there. - No.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21If it's this bad in the area visible to customers,

0:26:21 > 0:26:24I dread to think what it's like behind the scenes where

0:26:24 > 0:26:26there's a small food preparation area.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29I've got something you'll want to see.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34Yes, fine example.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38Cockroaches are just about the worst kind of creature you'd

0:26:38 > 0:26:40want in your kitchen.

0:26:40 > 0:26:44Feasting on anything from rotting food to excrement and even the

0:26:44 > 0:26:49toenails of sleeping people, it's believed that they spread a number

0:26:49 > 0:26:53of diseases to humans including salmonella and gastroenteritis.

0:26:56 > 0:26:58- We expected we'd see something like that here.- We did.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00So, where there's one I presume there's a few more.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02Very likely to be more.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05I've no idea what killed him. I'm pretty sure it wasn't starvation.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08Gluttony might be on the list.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11He's actually leaking fluid on me now so I might put him down.

0:27:11 > 0:27:14Ohhh! You might want to ditch the gloves at this point too.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16He's going in the bin, with my glove.

0:27:17 > 0:27:18Cheerio.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23Some consumer advice. If you're worried about a pool

0:27:23 > 0:27:27kitchen like this, what's safe? Chips and pizza?

0:27:27 > 0:27:30Chips is usually a good bet. Pizza, pretty much.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32Anything cooked to a high temperature.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40To be fair, the hotel's main kitchens seem well run and maintained,

0:27:40 > 0:27:43so it's all the more frustrating that they should be getting

0:27:43 > 0:27:46areas like the snack bar so wrong.

0:27:48 > 0:27:53Quite rightly people come here with high expectations, this is a four-star hotel,

0:27:52 > 0:27:56and even though the star system can be misleading sometimes,

0:27:56 > 0:28:00the principle is you expect to be treated well here.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03You expect the little details to be right.

0:28:03 > 0:28:05And I don't think they are right, here.

0:28:05 > 0:28:07And sometimes it is the small things that drive you nuts,

0:28:07 > 0:28:09and it really can ruin a holiday.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12That's what the management here need to get on top of.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18Time to see what manager Mark intends to do about it,

0:28:18 > 0:28:20starting with that supercharged indoor pool.

0:28:22 > 0:28:25- There is quite a big problem there, a chlorine problem.- Yes.

0:28:25 > 0:28:28The pool maintenance man, and I think this is where the problem comes from,

0:28:28 > 0:28:30his equipment was broken.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33He couldn't actually tell how much chlorine was in the pool.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36And he was adding chlorine, and it got to a point

0:28:36 > 0:28:38where it was actually quite dangerous.

0:28:38 > 0:28:40The problem is being sorted now, I believe,

0:28:40 > 0:28:42he is draining the pool and sorting it out.

0:28:42 > 0:28:44Not only that but yesterday I held a meeting

0:28:44 > 0:28:47with the maintenance manager about it,

0:28:47 > 0:28:49we bought another kit straightaway yesterday.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51We take it seriously because at the end of the day

0:28:51 > 0:28:54it is not only the results, it is about people using the indoor pool.

0:28:54 > 0:28:58- Yeah.- I'm sure people would have issues with that

0:28:58 > 0:29:00and we can't afford to have that at the moment.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02'It's a positive response from Mark -

0:29:02 > 0:29:06'but what will he make of that dodgy poolside kitchen?'

0:29:07 > 0:29:10I have to say we were quite shocked by what we found.

0:29:10 > 0:29:15It's not clean, there is nowhere to wash your hands properly,

0:29:15 > 0:29:16a lot of dirt on the floor,

0:29:16 > 0:29:20we also found some cockroaches, some pests,

0:29:20 > 0:29:23and the food in the fridges was also quite warm.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26It is quite serious, what you are saying, of course.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28With regards to the pests and whatnot,

0:29:28 > 0:29:33we have just changed our pest control company here

0:29:33 > 0:29:38and what happens is when you have companies coming over

0:29:38 > 0:29:40on a regular basis,

0:29:40 > 0:29:44as soon as they do the treatment, then all of a sudden you see pests.

0:29:44 > 0:29:46There is too much food on the floor.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48The floor isn't being cleaned properly,

0:29:48 > 0:29:50so it is a banquet for cockroaches.

0:29:50 > 0:29:53That's the problem, not because of where you are or anything like that,

0:29:53 > 0:29:57it's because all of yesterday, nothing was cleaned.

0:29:57 > 0:30:01Behind the counters, on the floor, there was food.

0:30:01 > 0:30:02- And it's still there now. - It's very bad.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05So that is what is encouraging the pests.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08And actually the funny thing is your main kitchen is fantastic,

0:30:08 > 0:30:11it's clean, there are good processes in place,

0:30:11 > 0:30:13the staff know what they are doing,

0:30:13 > 0:30:16and the quick fix is the staff from your main kitchen

0:30:16 > 0:30:18to be running the snack kitchen,

0:30:18 > 0:30:21because the standards in the main kitchen are very, very good.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24Yes, unfortunately, there are a lot of shortcomings

0:30:24 > 0:30:26but I can assure you that come next season

0:30:26 > 0:30:28it will be completely different.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36Well, Mark's attitude is really encouraging -

0:30:36 > 0:30:40he seems to be taking on board mine and Lisa's comments, and has

0:30:40 > 0:30:44promised a major refurbishment programme for the hotel's bedrooms.

0:30:46 > 0:30:49And I'm able to make a real change straightaway - getting both

0:30:49 > 0:30:53the slimy shower and the filthy kitchen tackled there and then.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58We've highlighted some of the problems with the manager,

0:30:58 > 0:30:59he has responded well,

0:30:59 > 0:31:01he promises us that changes will be made,

0:31:01 > 0:31:05and I'm optimistic, I genuinely think this place will improve

0:31:05 > 0:31:11and made a lot better for all the British holidaymakers who come here.

0:31:12 > 0:31:16But I've been doing this long enough not to take anything for granted.

0:31:16 > 0:31:20So later in the show I'll be back to make sure Mark is true to his word.

0:31:26 > 0:31:29Fortunately, most holidays run problem free

0:31:29 > 0:31:33but all kinds of medical mishaps can get in the way of fun in the sun

0:31:33 > 0:31:36and that's why the Beach Surgery is open for business.

0:31:38 > 0:31:42Over the course of the series, Dr Chris Van Tulleken and I will be

0:31:42 > 0:31:46on call for British holidaymakers experiencing some of those common...

0:31:46 > 0:31:49Every time I fly my feet swell up.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52..and not so common holiday ailments.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54It might be a running skinworm.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57This is the first time I have advised anyone

0:31:57 > 0:32:00to medically go topless on the beach.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06First up today is Danny Haggan whose holiday fun

0:32:06 > 0:32:10has been compromised from the moment he came in to land.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15- How long have you been here? - Ten days so far.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17What is going on?

0:32:17 > 0:32:20My ear hasn't popped.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23It's very painful.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26And I can't hear well.

0:32:26 > 0:32:31Cos you hear it, on the plane, go, then as you land, it goes again.

0:32:31 > 0:32:33- But it didn't do that for you. - It didn't do that with me.

0:32:33 > 0:32:37- That must be frustrating. - It is frustrating.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40Danny's is a problem most of us have encountered at some point

0:32:40 > 0:32:43and given that over 40 million of us fly every year,

0:32:43 > 0:32:46that's an awful lot of blocked ears.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48What have you done to try and pop the ear?

0:32:48 > 0:32:51I've tried putting my finger in my ear.

0:32:51 > 0:32:53- Your finger in the ear?- Yes.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55- OK.- I tried yawning.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57- That presumably didn't work.- No.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02On the other side of our eardrums is a cavity filled with air

0:33:02 > 0:33:06that needs to be at the same pressure as the air on the outside.

0:33:06 > 0:33:08When our plane descends for landing,

0:33:08 > 0:33:10the pressure in the cabin increases quickly

0:33:10 > 0:33:12and if the air in the middle ear doesn't do the same,

0:33:12 > 0:33:16that's when it will feel painful or blocked.

0:33:16 > 0:33:19A very small tube goes to the back of your mouth,

0:33:19 > 0:33:21called the Eustachian tube, which you might have heard of.

0:33:21 > 0:33:25When you yawn or swallow, that tube opens

0:33:25 > 0:33:28and allows the pressure in your middle ear

0:33:28 > 0:33:30to equalise with your mouth on the onside.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33So what you need to do is open that Eustachian tube.

0:33:33 > 0:33:35And you've done all the right things, done some yawning,

0:33:35 > 0:33:37chewing gum.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39- What about sweets?- Sweets help.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42Anything that helps you move your jaw and yawn.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45The other thing you can do that you've got to be really careful of

0:33:45 > 0:33:47is blocking your nose and trying to pop your ears.

0:33:47 > 0:33:48You've got to do this gently.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51- It can be a risky thing to do, cos you can burst your eardrum.- Right.

0:33:51 > 0:33:54But it will hurt before you burst your eardrum, so the trick

0:33:54 > 0:33:56is to do it without causing any pain.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59- OK, stop doing that now. No luck?- That one popped.

0:33:59 > 0:34:01- That one popped?- Yeah. - But the other one didn't?- No.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04What I can do is reassure you, nothing bad is going on,

0:34:04 > 0:34:06it is common, and it will pop.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10So, to try to keep your ears balanced when you fly

0:34:10 > 0:34:13yawn, chew and swallow as the plane descends.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16It's a good idea to feed babies or give them a drink

0:34:16 > 0:34:19to encourage them to swallow during descent.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22And if you have a cold, or suffer regularly on flights,

0:34:22 > 0:34:25consider decongestants or anti-histamines

0:34:25 > 0:34:27to help keep the Eustachian tube clear.

0:34:34 > 0:34:36Next to visit our beach surgery today

0:34:36 > 0:34:38is Debbie Wright and her family.

0:34:39 > 0:34:42Chris, Debbie, Katie, you're on your family holiday

0:34:42 > 0:34:46but it's not going to plan, tell us, what's the problem?

0:34:46 > 0:34:49Last night I noticed I had a blister underneath my tongue

0:34:49 > 0:34:53and this morning when I got up, it's like my glands are swollen now.

0:34:53 > 0:34:55- Is it painful? - Just a bit, yeah.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58Let's have a look in your mouth.

0:34:58 > 0:35:01I'm going to start, actually, can you see just in there?

0:35:01 > 0:35:03Just behind the front two teeth.

0:35:03 > 0:35:06It looks like there is a flap of skin there that...

0:35:06 > 0:35:08it seems like you might have cut it.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10Have you got pain on that side?

0:35:10 > 0:35:12- Nuh-uh.- And what about on that side?

0:35:12 > 0:35:15- Uh-huh.- Yeah, a little bit inflamed there.

0:35:15 > 0:35:17I think we can be pretty confident that you have

0:35:17 > 0:35:21an ulceration or a cut in the mouth.

0:35:21 > 0:35:23Along with stress or illness,

0:35:23 > 0:35:28a common cause of mouth ulcers is damage to the tissue in your mouth.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31But of course getting stuck into the local cuisine is one of the best

0:35:31 > 0:35:33things about a holiday,

0:35:33 > 0:35:36Just be careful when you're tucking into that lovely paella,

0:35:36 > 0:35:40with their sharp shells, mussels and other shellfish can bite back.

0:35:41 > 0:35:42It's nothing to worry about then?

0:35:42 > 0:35:47Nothing to worry about, unless it goes on for a few weeks.

0:35:47 > 0:35:49- Have you got a kettle in your hotel room?- Yeah.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52I'd boil some water, make it as hot as a cup of tea,

0:35:52 > 0:35:55stir in loads of salt, a couple of big teaspoons of salt

0:35:55 > 0:35:58so it really tastes disgusting.

0:35:58 > 0:36:02Don't swallow it, slush it around the mouth, keep it as hot as you can

0:36:02 > 0:36:04on that bit of tongue, without burning it.

0:36:04 > 0:36:07You have to judge the temperature. And if in 48 hours it's not better,

0:36:07 > 0:36:12I'd get a very simple antibiotic, like a penicillin from the chemists.

0:36:12 > 0:36:16If in two weeks it's not better, you need to see your GP.

0:36:16 > 0:36:19Most mouth ulcers won't require special treatment

0:36:19 > 0:36:24so if you get a mild one, cleaning it with salty water might help.

0:36:24 > 0:36:27Avoid hard, sharp or spicy foods.

0:36:27 > 0:36:28Take care brushing your teeth

0:36:28 > 0:36:33and reduce your stress levels by doing something relaxing.

0:36:33 > 0:36:34Fine by me.

0:36:41 > 0:36:44Things can go wrong in a heartbeat.

0:36:44 > 0:36:48One minute you're in paradise, the next, just like that,

0:36:48 > 0:36:50everything is turned on its head.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53Which is why I've been investigating those things

0:36:53 > 0:36:56that can really ruin a holiday.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58From the shattering...

0:36:58 > 0:37:01If people go down head first you are looking at, possibly, a fatality.

0:37:01 > 0:37:03..to the shocking...

0:37:03 > 0:37:07There is no Europe-wide, world-wide standard.

0:37:07 > 0:37:11..I've discovered that you're not always as safe as you might think.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16Today, the hidden dangers of a safari holiday.

0:37:20 > 0:37:24Once the preserve of the very rich, the thrill of witnessing wild

0:37:24 > 0:37:27animals at close quarters is now available to all,

0:37:27 > 0:37:31with a range of safari holidays to suit many budgets.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36But should we take it for granted that a safari tour is a safe,

0:37:36 > 0:37:41risk-free way of getting up close and personal with wildlife?

0:37:41 > 0:37:44Like thousands of others each year, The Ellison-Perret family travelled

0:37:44 > 0:37:49to India in search of a glimpse of one of the world's rarest big cats.

0:37:49 > 0:37:53But their trip would end in a terrifying accident.

0:37:53 > 0:37:58I have to say that a safari holiday has always been my dream holiday.

0:37:58 > 0:38:02It sounds as if the latest one was a bit of a nightmare. What happened?

0:38:02 > 0:38:04We were travelling around India

0:38:04 > 0:38:07and it was the highlight of the holiday, to see the tigers.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10On safari, in a canter.

0:38:12 > 0:38:16Canter trucks are widely used in India, and the Ellison-Perrets

0:38:16 > 0:38:20took their place at the back of a high sided 16-seater.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23The tour began better than anyone could have hoped,

0:38:23 > 0:38:28with the group enjoying a rare sighting of a pair of Bengal tigers.

0:38:28 > 0:38:32- Everybody was incredibly excited about what we saw.- You saw tigers?

0:38:32 > 0:38:35We saw them. Which was amazing. You very seldom see tigers.

0:38:35 > 0:38:39We were quite late to leave, because the park closes.

0:38:39 > 0:38:43- And the exit is up a short and very steep hill.- Like that?

0:38:43 > 0:38:46Like that. And as you came up to go to the top of the hill, he stalled.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52And then, of course, it started to turn over.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54I flew through the air into the top of a tree.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57Hit the top of the tree, bounced out of the tree,

0:38:57 > 0:39:00onto the very hard ground.

0:39:00 > 0:39:02I just lay there, and went,

0:39:02 > 0:39:04"For goodness' sake, that really hurts!"

0:39:04 > 0:39:08In the incident, Kevin broke his nose, Beth was concussed

0:39:08 > 0:39:11and Rose suffered bruising and ligament damage.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13But Diane suffered more serious injuries,

0:39:13 > 0:39:18breaking several ribs and damaging her back, arms and hips.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21Do you still have problems from the injuries that you had?

0:39:21 > 0:39:25I take lots and lots of painkillers.

0:39:25 > 0:39:28The family were incredibly lucky that there were no

0:39:28 > 0:39:31tigers in the vicinity when the accident happened.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35But if you think the Ellison-Perret family's terrifying ordeal

0:39:35 > 0:39:37is unique, think again.

0:39:37 > 0:39:42Only last year a British tourist was killed by an elephant

0:39:42 > 0:39:46at another site in India, and around the world there were several

0:39:46 > 0:39:48incidents where animals attacked.

0:39:49 > 0:39:53And things could have gone the same way for Michael and Trish Hawker

0:39:53 > 0:39:56and friends in South Africa, had luck not been on their side.

0:39:58 > 0:40:03The ranger decided that we should go into the predator area,

0:40:03 > 0:40:05where they had five lions.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08We were very, very close indeed, so much so that the girl said,

0:40:08 > 0:40:13"Please, we're too close, we would like to back off a bit."

0:40:13 > 0:40:18Suddenly, the lioness raised herself off the ground and looked at us,

0:40:18 > 0:40:19and then just charged.

0:40:21 > 0:40:25Their guide reversed away at speed but lost control

0:40:25 > 0:40:28and rolled the vehicle just yards from the pride of lions.

0:40:28 > 0:40:33We got thrown out. We were obviously shaken.

0:40:33 > 0:40:36The next question was, where are the lions?

0:40:36 > 0:40:41We had nothing to defend ourselves with at all, the ranger made

0:40:41 > 0:40:45no suggestion that we might do anything, even sound the horn.

0:40:45 > 0:40:48So we lay there. The girls thought they were going to be eaten.

0:40:48 > 0:40:53I thought, frankly, one of the lions would come and pull somebody out.

0:40:53 > 0:40:55Yeah, we all thought we were going to die.

0:40:55 > 0:40:59And the lioness literally got to within two metres of the vehicle.

0:40:59 > 0:41:01Fortunately another vehicle

0:41:01 > 0:41:03arrived in the nick of time and rescued them.

0:41:04 > 0:41:08But their terrifying ordeal could so easily have been avoided

0:41:08 > 0:41:12if their guide had been better trained and better equipped.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19I've come to Woburn Safari Park to meet expert Chris MacKintyre.

0:41:19 > 0:41:23All cats are very fast. They are so much faster than you are.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25He's going to give me some advice

0:41:25 > 0:41:27on how to avoid danger whilst on safari.

0:41:29 > 0:41:32There they are, a whole pride, under the tree there.

0:41:32 > 0:41:35They are completely chilled. But put one foot out of this vehicle

0:41:35 > 0:41:38and you have the attention of every lion instantly.

0:41:40 > 0:41:44So if you had an accident, this close to a pride of lions,

0:41:44 > 0:41:48- what would you do?- You would be in a real mess. A real mess.

0:41:48 > 0:41:52You would stick with the vehicle and, come the worst,

0:41:52 > 0:41:55if they started to show an interest in you,

0:41:55 > 0:41:57you might well beep the horn.

0:41:57 > 0:42:01- Make a noise? - Make as loud a noise as you could.

0:42:01 > 0:42:05You would try hard to be seen as part of the vehicle

0:42:05 > 0:42:06and not as a separate animal.

0:42:06 > 0:42:09Vehicles aren't something they eat, you would stay with that vehicle,

0:42:09 > 0:42:12stay in that vehicle if you possibly could.

0:42:14 > 0:42:18So whose job is it to ensure your safety while on safari,

0:42:18 > 0:42:21and do tour operators have any obligation to check that

0:42:21 > 0:42:24safety standards overseas are met?

0:42:26 > 0:42:28In search of answers,

0:42:28 > 0:42:31I head to the Association of British Travel Agents.

0:42:31 > 0:42:36All ABTA members will be responsible for the safety of that safari,

0:42:36 > 0:42:39they will be legally liable for it.

0:42:39 > 0:42:42We do a lot of work in this area, trying to raise standards,

0:42:42 > 0:42:46to make it safe for people to visit those destinations.

0:42:46 > 0:42:51What are the sort of precautions that British holidaymakers should

0:42:51 > 0:42:53take when they go on safari?

0:42:53 > 0:42:56First and foremost make sure they book through a reputable company.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59Ask questions as well if you are unsure about any health

0:42:59 > 0:43:03and safety standards, ask questions before you depart.

0:43:03 > 0:43:07If you're uncomfortable with anything, don't go on the tour.

0:43:07 > 0:43:11And make sure you have an emergency contact number, should you be out

0:43:11 > 0:43:16in the bush and something happens, you know what the procedures are.

0:43:16 > 0:43:20It's a message echoed by safari expert Chris, who says,

0:43:20 > 0:43:24book with someone reputable and with real expertise

0:43:24 > 0:43:27and experience in the region you're visiting.

0:43:27 > 0:43:30Ask the person you are booking with, "have you been to this lodge?

0:43:30 > 0:43:32"Have you been to this safari?"

0:43:32 > 0:43:35And if they haven't, put the phone down and talk to someone else.

0:43:35 > 0:43:38- And that way you really will have the holiday of a lifetime.- Absolutely.

0:43:38 > 0:43:41And it can be, and it is, for most people.

0:43:41 > 0:43:43Safaris are fantastic holidays.

0:43:50 > 0:43:54Each week on Holiday Hit Squad, from cream...

0:43:54 > 0:43:56- Your whole body.- That is a lot.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58..to currency...

0:43:58 > 0:44:01I've been tackling some of the great

0:44:01 > 0:44:04British holiday-makers most common consumer questions.

0:44:04 > 0:44:06And this week,

0:44:06 > 0:44:09it's how to avoid being weighed down by unexpected costs.

0:44:15 > 0:44:18Everyone knows someone who has been caught out at the airport with

0:44:18 > 0:44:20excessive baggage charges.

0:44:20 > 0:44:22Ironically, it is the low-cost airlines that charge you

0:44:22 > 0:44:25the most for even the smallest of bags.

0:44:25 > 0:44:28But you only need to know the basics to keep hold of your cash.

0:44:30 > 0:44:32Adding excess baggage charges has become the norm

0:44:32 > 0:44:35with most low-cost airlines expecting you to pay

0:44:35 > 0:44:39if you want to put any baggage in the hold.

0:44:39 > 0:44:42Last year, research showed that the cost of some airline extras

0:44:42 > 0:44:47had risen by a staggering 66 percent - meaning that in some

0:44:47 > 0:44:51cases these can add up to well over half the cost of your flight.

0:44:53 > 0:44:59If you book a 20kg suitcase online, you can expect to pay up to £90,

0:44:59 > 0:45:00depending on where you're flying.

0:45:00 > 0:45:03But if you turn up at the airport without booking your bag

0:45:03 > 0:45:08in online, you could be charged up to £140 at the busiest time of year.

0:45:08 > 0:45:12They'll also charge you an extra £20 for every kilogram

0:45:12 > 0:45:19over 20kg you go, so a 23kg bag could end up costing you £200.

0:45:19 > 0:45:22£200 just to take your luggage on holiday with you.

0:45:27 > 0:45:31To avoid being stung, here are the best ways to limit your load.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34Beat those airport scales

0:45:34 > 0:45:37by investing in some lightweight luggage.

0:45:37 > 0:45:39Make a list before you pack -

0:45:39 > 0:45:41think about how many days you'll be there

0:45:41 > 0:45:43and what you're likely to need.

0:45:44 > 0:45:48Why not go with one overall colour scheme to mix and match,

0:45:48 > 0:45:51so you'll need fewer bags, belts and shoes?

0:45:51 > 0:45:54And if you're really looking to cut costs,

0:45:54 > 0:45:56there's always the option of taking just a carry-on bag.

0:45:56 > 0:46:00Budget airlines only allow you to take one piece of hand luggage,

0:46:00 > 0:46:03which is fine if you can fit everything into that one bag.

0:46:03 > 0:46:06# Papa's got a brand-new bag. #

0:46:06 > 0:46:09So here are some great ways to squeeze a lot in

0:46:09 > 0:46:13if you want to bring down the bulk of your baggage...

0:46:13 > 0:46:16Save space by vacuum packing your clothes.

0:46:16 > 0:46:19But remember, you are going to need to access a vacuum cleaner

0:46:19 > 0:46:21in time for your return journey.

0:46:21 > 0:46:23Roll clothes rather than fold -

0:46:23 > 0:46:25you can squeeze much more in that way -

0:46:25 > 0:46:27and they'll be less creased.

0:46:27 > 0:46:30And instead of packing bulkier items like jackets,

0:46:30 > 0:46:33wear them when you travel

0:46:33 > 0:46:36But do beware of weight and size restrictions.

0:46:36 > 0:46:38Ignoring them could cost you a packet.

0:46:38 > 0:46:40For example, take Ryanair and Flybe.

0:46:41 > 0:46:45They say that your hand luggage must be no heavier than 10kg,

0:46:45 > 0:46:47and Monarch are even stricter.

0:46:47 > 0:46:50Hand luggage on their planes can be no heavier than 5kg.

0:46:50 > 0:46:53And if Ryanair or Monarch, for instance,

0:46:53 > 0:46:56find out that your bag is heavier than it should be,

0:46:56 > 0:46:59they could fine you £50-60.

0:46:59 > 0:47:02# Hey ya... #

0:47:02 > 0:47:04The moral of the story is read the small print

0:47:04 > 0:47:08and always book online and in advance if it's possible.

0:47:08 > 0:47:11And remember that in some instances it may be cheaper in the long run

0:47:11 > 0:47:13to book with a more expensive airline

0:47:13 > 0:47:16that doesn't charge extra baggage fees.

0:47:25 > 0:47:26Well, here I am -

0:47:26 > 0:47:29I've come back to Malta to check up on the Cavalieri Hotel,

0:47:29 > 0:47:32to see if it's made the changes it really needs to

0:47:32 > 0:47:35to be deserving of that four-star status.

0:47:37 > 0:47:39It's certainly a quality hotel,

0:47:39 > 0:47:43but had been let down by poor attention to detail.

0:47:43 > 0:47:44Time to meet manager Mark.

0:47:44 > 0:47:47- Good to see you again, how are you? - Nice to see you again.

0:47:47 > 0:47:48On my first visit,

0:47:48 > 0:47:52the outdoor pool had been suffering from neglect around the edges.

0:47:52 > 0:47:55- That's good, cos that was thick, black, wasn't it?- Yes.

0:47:55 > 0:47:58- So that's been what, power-washed? - That was power-washed completely,

0:47:58 > 0:48:01- and as you can see, the result. - Good.

0:48:01 > 0:48:04I'm glad to see it's now in a much better condition.

0:48:05 > 0:48:10Next I want to check out that filthy poolside snack kitchen.

0:48:10 > 0:48:12Whoa! This is looking a bit different.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14It's clearly been pulled around a lot.

0:48:14 > 0:48:15What's been going on?

0:48:15 > 0:48:17Well, basically, the place is closed now.

0:48:17 > 0:48:21- Executive chef took full responsibility for it...- Good.

0:48:21 > 0:48:23He's preparing a plan. When it comes to reopening the place,

0:48:23 > 0:48:27I can assure you that the situation will be much, much different.

0:48:27 > 0:48:28Great.

0:48:30 > 0:48:32Looking good.

0:48:32 > 0:48:35And Mark was keen to show me that the indoor pool's chlorine level

0:48:35 > 0:48:38was under control, using a simple test strip.

0:48:41 > 0:48:43So, in it goes. It changes colour.

0:48:43 > 0:48:44These are so good,

0:48:44 > 0:48:48because it means that anyone who's not an expert can just quickly check.

0:48:48 > 0:48:51The manager, housekeeping personnel, people who are here,

0:48:51 > 0:48:54- the maintenance, anyone can do that. - Yeah. Brilliant.

0:48:54 > 0:48:56Problem solved,

0:48:56 > 0:48:58and a very attractive, very pleasant swimming pool,

0:48:58 > 0:49:01and I can see people even queuing up to come in here and swim.

0:49:01 > 0:49:03- Yep.- So, we'll leave them to it, shall we?

0:49:03 > 0:49:05- Definitely.- Excellent.- Thank you.

0:49:05 > 0:49:08Mark now seems to have a good grip on this hotel.

0:49:08 > 0:49:10There's a major refurbishment under way,

0:49:10 > 0:49:13and following our experiences of dirty bedding,

0:49:13 > 0:49:16it's great to hear that the hotel have appointed

0:49:16 > 0:49:18a new laundry service provider.

0:49:18 > 0:49:21Well, I've said it all along, but the key to making this

0:49:21 > 0:49:24a really good hotel is staying on top of the small details.

0:49:24 > 0:49:27Keeping standards consistently high.

0:49:27 > 0:49:30It inspires confidence, and if they can roll that out

0:49:30 > 0:49:31across the rest of the hotel,

0:49:31 > 0:49:33I think they're going to be in a very good place

0:49:33 > 0:49:35come next season.

0:49:40 > 0:49:42Earlier in the programme

0:49:42 > 0:49:45I sent Helen and Joe off in search of holiday heaven,

0:49:45 > 0:49:49just to see if Britain really can compete with the rest of the world

0:49:49 > 0:49:51for our hard-earned holiday cash.

0:49:51 > 0:49:55Well, this week, the challenge was to find an action-packed weekend

0:49:55 > 0:49:58for two, for less than £1,000.

0:49:58 > 0:50:00# Don't stop me now

0:50:00 > 0:50:02# I'm having such a good time... #

0:50:02 > 0:50:06I've chosen Iceland for a unique and exhilarating encounter

0:50:06 > 0:50:07with its alien landscape.

0:50:09 > 0:50:13Whereas, I opted for the rugged good looks of the Scottish Highlands.

0:50:13 > 0:50:16There's everything you need here for a grand adventure -

0:50:16 > 0:50:19whether you like things extreme...

0:50:20 > 0:50:24..or prefer to take things a little more slowly.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27This is the finish line of the West Highland Way,

0:50:27 > 0:50:30an official long-distance route starting just north of Glasgow

0:50:30 > 0:50:32and finishing here in Fort William.

0:50:32 > 0:50:37It's 96 miles long, most people do it in about seven days,

0:50:37 > 0:50:39and it's just another example of one of the fantastic

0:50:39 > 0:50:41activities you can do in this area.

0:50:41 > 0:50:44# Well, I would walk 500 miles

0:50:44 > 0:50:48# And I would walk 500 more... #

0:50:48 > 0:50:50People come from all over the world

0:50:50 > 0:50:53to tramp through some of the best scenery in Britain.

0:50:53 > 0:50:55First time to Britain.

0:50:55 > 0:50:57First time to Britain, first time to Scotland,

0:50:57 > 0:51:00- and you come and do this walk.- Yeah. - How have you found it?- Wonderful.

0:51:00 > 0:51:03And they get the awesome high and sense of achievement

0:51:03 > 0:51:05when completing it.

0:51:05 > 0:51:06Woo!

0:51:08 > 0:51:09How does that feel?

0:51:09 > 0:51:11- Fantastic!- We didn't want to stop.

0:51:11 > 0:51:14- You didn't want to stop? - No, we want to keep going!

0:51:15 > 0:51:18I can't believe it's sunny here!

0:51:18 > 0:51:20If you're coming out here for an adventure holiday,

0:51:20 > 0:51:24it goes without saying you're a lover of the outdoors.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27So there are plenty of places you can stay under canvas,

0:51:27 > 0:51:30and there's also stacks of holiday lodges

0:51:30 > 0:51:31if you crave a bit more comfort -

0:51:31 > 0:51:35but for a unique experience that combines a bit of both...

0:51:36 > 0:51:38Wow.

0:51:38 > 0:51:40Look at this!

0:51:40 > 0:51:44This is where Mongolia meets Scotland. This is your very own yurt.

0:51:44 > 0:51:46And it is brilliantly decked out.

0:51:46 > 0:51:50It's got raised flooring, so your stuff isn't going to get wet or damp.

0:51:50 > 0:51:53It's got a wood-burning stove so you can keep warm, boil the kettle,

0:51:53 > 0:51:55make yourself a hot water bottle.

0:51:55 > 0:51:58It's of course got bunk beds, so you can bring the whole family.

0:51:58 > 0:52:03It just has a really nice, light, airy and yet cosy feel.

0:52:03 > 0:52:07To put it simply, this is luxury in a field.

0:52:07 > 0:52:09Or is it a tent with a hole in the roof?

0:52:09 > 0:52:10Not for me to say.

0:52:10 > 0:52:13Anyway, if you're having to pretend you're in Mongolia, Joe,

0:52:13 > 0:52:14maybe Scotland isn't cutting it.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17I reckon Iceland blows you out of the water.

0:52:17 > 0:52:19# You're unbelievable

0:52:19 > 0:52:21# Oh! #

0:52:25 > 0:52:28Iceland is slap-bang on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge,

0:52:28 > 0:52:31which means it's a constantly shifting landscape,

0:52:31 > 0:52:34and all the volcanoes and geothermic activity

0:52:34 > 0:52:37mean great geysers like this.

0:52:37 > 0:52:41There's a distinct smell of sulphur/rotten eggs.

0:52:41 > 0:52:43But it's worth it.

0:52:43 > 0:52:45This one erupts every eight to twelve minutes,

0:52:45 > 0:52:48and never fails to take you by surprise.

0:52:48 > 0:52:49SHE SNORTS

0:52:49 > 0:52:50Ooh...!

0:52:50 > 0:52:53I'm so excited I snorted, that's never happened to me in my life!

0:52:53 > 0:52:56- Ever! - # You're unbelievable. #

0:53:00 > 0:53:01Look at that!

0:53:01 > 0:53:02Whatever you say, Helen.

0:53:02 > 0:53:04Well, if it's fun getting wet you want,

0:53:04 > 0:53:08join me for what's known as swift water canyoning

0:53:08 > 0:53:09Is this as extreme as it gets, then?

0:53:09 > 0:53:12- The canyoning?- This is as extreme as swift water canyoning gets.

0:53:12 > 0:53:14Amazing.

0:53:14 > 0:53:17- # Might as well jump - Jump!

0:53:17 > 0:53:20- # Go ahead, jump - Jump! #

0:53:21 > 0:53:23We jump...

0:53:23 > 0:53:24slide...

0:53:25 > 0:53:28'..and even get in behind waterfalls'

0:53:28 > 0:53:30It's amazing!

0:53:30 > 0:53:31Woo-hoo!

0:53:31 > 0:53:34'It's a test of nerve...'

0:53:34 > 0:53:35Mental!

0:53:35 > 0:53:37'..and utterly, utterly brilliant.'

0:53:37 > 0:53:39OK, here we go.

0:53:39 > 0:53:43Three, two, one.

0:53:43 > 0:53:44# I'm so excited... #

0:53:44 > 0:53:46Woo!

0:53:49 > 0:53:53# I'm about to lose control and I think I like it. #

0:53:53 > 0:53:55That just blew me away.

0:53:55 > 0:53:58This is so cool. So cool.

0:53:58 > 0:54:01You really... You can't have more fun in a wet suit.

0:54:01 > 0:54:03# I know, I know, I know I know I want to. #

0:54:06 > 0:54:08Oh, that's nice - I just got a text message from Joe,

0:54:08 > 0:54:11he is canyoning, which looks like loads of fun!

0:54:11 > 0:54:13I wanted to go canyoning...

0:54:14 > 0:54:17..but even I'm not stupid enough to attempt that.

0:54:17 > 0:54:20# This is planet Earth... #

0:54:20 > 0:54:22It's monstrous!

0:54:22 > 0:54:25# You're looking at planet Earth... #

0:54:25 > 0:54:28And that's what makes this place so very special -

0:54:28 > 0:54:32it's an island of unearthly wonders, and it's a world in motion -

0:54:32 > 0:54:37still developing, still being formed by powerful natural forces.

0:54:37 > 0:54:40Woo!

0:54:40 > 0:54:44Around 4,500 square miles of Iceland is covered by glaciers -

0:54:44 > 0:54:47massive slow-moving ice flows

0:54:47 > 0:54:49that grind their way through the landscape.

0:54:49 > 0:54:50Whoa!

0:54:50 > 0:54:52Buckle up.

0:54:52 > 0:54:56And that's where I'm headed with my Viking guide Ragnar.

0:54:57 > 0:55:00SHE GIGGLES

0:55:00 > 0:55:03Only one of the supercharged four-wheel drive experiences

0:55:03 > 0:55:04you can have on this island.

0:55:06 > 0:55:09- Is that a crevasse? - Yes, it is.- Should we be this close?

0:55:09 > 0:55:11This is enough.

0:55:11 > 0:55:14Of course, there's a stack of thrill-seeking activities

0:55:14 > 0:55:18you can do on the snow and ice - from hiking to snowmobiles.

0:55:20 > 0:55:21Or you can just be here

0:55:21 > 0:55:27and get your kicks from connecting with this extraordinary place.

0:55:27 > 0:55:29This is a real natural wonder.

0:55:29 > 0:55:32It's a sea of ice, it's moving, it's living,

0:55:32 > 0:55:35there are cracks in it, it's unpredictable.

0:55:35 > 0:55:37And because of that, it's exciting.

0:55:37 > 0:55:40There's an element of danger, which makes it exciting,

0:55:40 > 0:55:42but all of that is manageable because of Ragnar,

0:55:42 > 0:55:45so it's not like I'm out here and really getting

0:55:45 > 0:55:48into any trouble, because he knows what he's doing.

0:55:48 > 0:55:53This, to me, is thrill-seeking, it's adventure, but it's accessible.

0:55:53 > 0:55:55You'd have to go a long way round the world to find

0:55:55 > 0:56:00something as breathtaking as this, as exciting as this...

0:56:02 > 0:56:03Thanks, Ragnar.

0:56:03 > 0:56:04Thanks, Iceland.

0:56:06 > 0:56:07Snowball fight?

0:56:07 > 0:56:10Something tells me you're a bit of an expert in this.

0:56:10 > 0:56:11But so am I.

0:56:13 > 0:56:15Good luck, Joe!

0:56:15 > 0:56:18Don't let me fall down a crevasse!

0:56:18 > 0:56:21That would be a thrill too far.

0:56:21 > 0:56:24Oh, yes! Epic!

0:56:25 > 0:56:29Angela set us a budget of £1,000 for two people

0:56:29 > 0:56:31on a three-night break.

0:56:31 > 0:56:32And based on my hostel stay,

0:56:32 > 0:56:34and sticking to cheap

0:56:34 > 0:56:35yet tasty food options,

0:56:35 > 0:56:37I've just about come within budget.

0:56:41 > 0:56:44Well done, Helen. No, really, well done.

0:56:44 > 0:56:49But I'm afraid I can top that. I've come in at less than your total

0:56:49 > 0:56:52AND I ate at nice restaurants, and had a luxury hamper.

0:56:52 > 0:56:55- So, it was Scotland...- Yep. - ..versus Iceland. How did you do?

0:56:55 > 0:56:57I love Scotland, but Iceland has so much to offer.

0:56:57 > 0:57:00You can do so many different adventurous activities.

0:57:00 > 0:57:02Name it, think of it, you can do it there.

0:57:02 > 0:57:05Kayaking, ice climbing, hire a skidoo...

0:57:05 > 0:57:08And, yeah, I know you've got to spend a bit of money in Iceland,

0:57:08 > 0:57:09but the quirky culture is priceless.

0:57:09 > 0:57:13Both countries have a fantastic range of options for thrill-seekers, but...

0:57:13 > 0:57:16- And landscape.- And landscape, but you can drive yourself to Scotland.

0:57:16 > 0:57:18Actually, I came in well under budget -

0:57:18 > 0:57:21- don't like to brag, but I did. - You never mentioned it(!)

0:57:21 > 0:57:23And I could have splashed the cash a bit more.

0:57:23 > 0:57:26Well, I have to say, I would not have done the jump that you did,

0:57:26 > 0:57:27I really admire you for that.

0:57:27 > 0:57:29- Slightly surprised!- Yeah!

0:57:29 > 0:57:32But on the dogsled, I would have found that absolutely exhilarating.

0:57:32 > 0:57:35- Yeah.- Well, I think you've given the viewers a great choice, there.

0:57:35 > 0:57:37Passport - train ticket or car...

0:57:37 > 0:57:40- Something in both countries for everyone.- He's so smug!

0:57:40 > 0:57:42Look how proud he is of himself! Well done, Joe.

0:57:42 > 0:57:44Right, that's it for Holiday Hit Squad.

0:57:44 > 0:57:49On next week's programme, I'm on call at the Costa Blanca consulate.

0:57:49 > 0:57:51How did you come to be in the hospital with your gran?

0:57:51 > 0:57:54- She had a stroke. - So distressing for you.- Yeah.

0:57:54 > 0:57:57I check into another heartbreak hotel...

0:57:57 > 0:57:59I'm guessing you won't be coming back.

0:57:59 > 0:58:02Not me, definitely not!

0:58:02 > 0:58:05It's knives and forks at dawn as I duel with Joe

0:58:05 > 0:58:09in the battle to find the best break for food lovers, home...

0:58:09 > 0:58:10This is going to go in our salad. Have a try.

0:58:10 > 0:58:13How do you make sure that you're not picking up a weed?

0:58:13 > 0:58:14'..and away...'

0:58:14 > 0:58:17- It's falling apart, it's tender, it's delicious...- It's SO tender.

0:58:17 > 0:58:21So, until the next time, from all of us, bye-bye.
