:00:35. > :00:40.Hello. Each week on In Your Coner we're coming live from a different

:00:45. > :00:49.east -- loch anyway. We are in the centre of Cookstown in the Burnavon
:00:49. > :00:53.Theatre. Cookstown is a happening place with ambition to be the
:00:53. > :00:58.retail centre for the area. And this arts and cultural venue is the
:00:58. > :01:02.hub of music, theatre and zra ma for mid--- drama for mid-Ulster.
:01:02. > :01:05.With the help of the staff at the Burnavon Theatre, it has been

:01:12. > :01:18.In this series of In Your Coner, we have already been to limb ma vaddy
:01:18. > :01:21.and -- Limavady and Portadown. The In Your Coner team has already
:01:22. > :01:27.helped bring some resolution to stories that have been of concern
:01:27. > :01:34.to you. You have been telling us what you think too. Keep those e-
:01:34. > :01:43.mails and tweets coming. You can You can follow us on Facebook or
:01:43. > :01:50.So what is coming up? The hidden world of steroid abuse.
:01:50. > :01:55.Chris Moore has been finding out how young men who are injecting
:01:55. > :01:59.steroids are ruining their lives. And is the broadband up to speed
:01:59. > :02:07.here in Cookstown? We have been talking to folks in the town to
:02:07. > :02:12.All that is to come. Remember, we're live. This is your chance to
:02:12. > :02:22.get in touch right now. First, have you a computer? Whether you are
:02:22. > :02:25.here in Cookstown or in in in Carlloch, listen up. Would you give
:02:25. > :02:29.a burglar a key to your front door? Probably not. But that's what some
:02:29. > :02:32.of us are doing without realising. In Your Coner has been examining
:02:32. > :02:38.the rise in the number of computer scammers, targeting both
:02:38. > :02:41.individuals and businesses locally. By gaining access to your PCs and
:02:41. > :02:51.laptops, they are able to download your passwords and bank details. As
:02:51. > :02:58.
:02:58. > :03:05.I found out, the scammers are I used to think of scammers as Del
:03:05. > :03:10.Boys, but as with every facet of our our daily lives, scamming has
:03:10. > :03:13.go online. Scammers can be sitting on different Continents, sitting in
:03:13. > :03:23.different time zones and they want to rob you blind by pretending they
:03:23. > :03:29.
:03:29. > :03:33.Sinead, tell me what happened? How did they make contact with you in
:03:33. > :03:38.terms of the Microsoft scam? Well, they phoned me up one afternoon and
:03:38. > :03:44.said they were from something Microsoft and they thought that I
:03:44. > :03:51.had a fewerors on my -- fewerors on my computer and could I switch my
:03:51. > :03:59.computer on and would I check. They told me what to click on to. Up
:03:59. > :04:04.came these warning signs and then on came some chap who then warned
:04:04. > :04:06.me that my computer could crash at any moment which, of course,
:04:06. > :04:10.worried me. Naturally.
:04:10. > :04:15.Julia was asked by the polite and professional sounding gentleman to
:04:15. > :04:18.pay a fee of 280 for fixing her computer which she paid over the
:04:18. > :04:22.phone using her bank card. The scammer had free access to her
:04:22. > :04:29.computer and to all the personal details Julia had on it.
:04:29. > :04:36.It was only later that Julia felt something was not right. I started
:04:36. > :04:42.to feel very ashamed and guilty and I thought I daren't tell my
:04:42. > :04:46.daughters. The same company had called me.
:04:46. > :04:49.Julia's daughter became an online detective for her mum and managed
:04:49. > :04:53.to track down the company behind the scam. She alerted the bank on
:04:54. > :04:58.her mum's behalf and managed to get a partial refund of the money that
:04:58. > :05:02.her mum paid the scammer. I was just so cross that someone
:05:02. > :05:09.had swindled mum, you know. It made you feel so upset about it. It was
:05:09. > :05:12.horrible to see mum so upset. We have spoken to several people
:05:12. > :05:16.across Northern Ireland who have suffered from similar scams, people
:05:16. > :05:20.ringing them at home and pretending they are from Microsoft and want to
:05:21. > :05:26.fix the bugs that are slowing up their computer.
:05:26. > :05:34.Michael Small is a businessman who knows a lot about computers.
:05:34. > :05:37.So is it a complicated procession? -- process? Not really. They are
:05:37. > :05:41.trying to convince you that there is something wrong with your
:05:41. > :05:47.machine. They will direct you to an area called the event viewer and
:05:47. > :05:51.you can see in the page there that there are hundreds of errors and
:05:51. > :05:56.warning notices. And that's normal? These are normal
:05:56. > :06:01.things. They are convincing you there is something serious wrong
:06:01. > :06:04.with your machine and they say, "Well, we can fix this for a fee."
:06:05. > :06:09.But what they are really doing is planting software programmes on to
:06:09. > :06:14.your computer to allow thim to ac-- them to access whatever they want.
:06:14. > :06:19.And that's what their main aim is. The scammers will direct to you a
:06:19. > :06:23.website which will allow them to take take control of your computer.
:06:23. > :06:27.Not only can they access your personal information, but they can
:06:27. > :06:30.plant software to record what you do on your PC. Bank lens and credit
:06:30. > :06:36.cards could be set-up in your name without you knowing.
:06:36. > :06:42.I know what we have set-up is your colleague taking over your computer
:06:42. > :06:45.and he has full authority to do that, but it is unnervinging and
:06:45. > :06:49.worrying. It is strange to watch somebody
:06:49. > :06:53.else having control of your computer screen. He can move the
:06:53. > :06:57.mouse around and go anywhere he wants. But they will probably do it
:06:57. > :07:02.in such a way that it is not causing any worry to you. They are
:07:02. > :07:07.trying to provide a fix for the errors that you saw earlier so you
:07:07. > :07:11.think everything is normal, but what they are doing is setting this
:07:11. > :07:14.computer up for use in the future. Frightening.
:07:14. > :07:17.The Trading Standards office in Belfast tipped us off about this
:07:17. > :07:20.scam which they say is becoming widespread. All the scammer needs
:07:21. > :07:24.is a computer and your home telephone number and even
:07:24. > :07:32.businesses can be targeted too as I discovered when I went to meet
:07:33. > :07:39.another victim, this time in So this is your business file then?
:07:39. > :07:43.Yes. With orders and so forth that come through.
:07:43. > :07:46.Carol Armstrong relies on her computer to run her online business
:07:47. > :07:51.from home. She had been having problems with the computer when she
:07:51. > :07:57.got the call. Halfs this guy's -- -- what was
:07:57. > :08:03.this guy's manner? He seemed amenable and very chatty and so
:08:03. > :08:07.forth and I suppose in hindsight if I look at t he would have been
:08:07. > :08:15.insistent and I was just caught in the trap.
:08:15. > :08:18.The scammer had conned his way on to Carol's computer and charged her
:08:19. > :08:24.165. He had access to her files which contain her personal and
:08:24. > :08:29.business details. I gave them remote access to the computer and
:08:29. > :08:33.they were working on it for five, or ten minutes or so. I was told at
:08:33. > :08:39.the time not to touch it, but then everything seemed to stop after a
:08:40. > :08:44.while. So I sent a message on the computer then, "Are you still
:08:44. > :08:53.working on it?" I didn't get a reply back.
:08:53. > :08:56.It dawned on me. We contacted Microsoft to who --
:08:56. > :09:03.who say they never cold call people at home. If you are unsure about
:09:03. > :09:08.who is calling you, put the phone That is scary stuff, isn't it? You
:09:08. > :09:18.have been in touch with us, letting us know it happened to you. Get in
:09:18. > :09:20.
:09:21. > :09:24.touch with the In Your Coner -- In Your Corner.
:09:24. > :09:28.Damien, most of us who use computers aren't experts like
:09:28. > :09:31.Michael in our report there. If someone gets in touch and points
:09:31. > :09:37.things like that out, we are inclined to fall into the trap,
:09:37. > :09:41.aren't we? How prevalent is this in in Northern Ireland? It is
:09:41. > :09:45.incredibly prevalent. The reason it is continuing to operate is it has
:09:45. > :09:48.been successful and plausible. Even in the last week, we have had ten
:09:48. > :09:52.complaints from people who have been victims of the scam and that's
:09:52. > :09:56.likely to be the tip of the iceberg. There is likely to be hundreds, if
:09:56. > :10:00.not thousands of people out there who don't realise this is a scam,
:10:00. > :10:04.that they have been caught out, their personal details have been
:10:04. > :10:10.compromised and they maybe subject to identity fraud or any other scam.
:10:10. > :10:15.All of those expressions like identity fraud make people nervous.
:10:15. > :10:20.You have been looking into this and writing about it. Who is behind it?
:10:20. > :10:25.There is one man in Canada. There is another man in India. I have
:10:25. > :10:28.their passport photos and the police have this information as
:10:28. > :10:33.well. They have been running it for about three years and they have a
:10:33. > :10:38.call centre which is running in India, where there is front-line
:10:38. > :10:41.staff who do the first call and when someone has been reeled in, it
:10:41. > :10:46.is passed to back office staff and they are making millions every year.
:10:46. > :10:52.This is a real professional operation, they are really
:10:52. > :10:55.sophisticated? They have websites and they will point people to a
:10:55. > :11:01.website and if the police take the website down and they will put
:11:01. > :11:04.another one up within The Hour. What about mother and daughter,
:11:04. > :11:09.Gillian and Heather, is that a result of one person's information
:11:10. > :11:14.handing on another one if you like or is that sheer chance? It might
:11:14. > :11:18.look as if it has come from one to the other. It is more likely to be
:11:18. > :11:21.chance. These people are just working their way through the phone
:11:21. > :11:26.books. The reason we know this is because there have been people who
:11:26. > :11:29.have had phone calls and the person they have been asked for is a name
:11:29. > :11:32.that's in the phone book which might be a misspelling only in the
:11:32. > :11:37.phone book. They are working through it, but they have called
:11:37. > :11:41.millions of people. This is very widespread. They are doing it in
:11:41. > :11:45.all the English speaking countries, not only in Ireland, the UK, they
:11:45. > :11:50.are doing it in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the whole of
:11:50. > :11:54.America. 350 million people is their market.
:11:54. > :11:59.It is clear they don't need to have a high high strike rate if they are
:11:59. > :12:04.making millions of calls, they get a few people on the hook and get,
:12:04. > :12:08.how much are they getting out of each person? If you throw the net
:12:08. > :12:12.far enough, you have catch a lot of people. Many people we have
:12:12. > :12:16.reported these examples to us, saying I have been called by these
:12:16. > :12:24.scammers, usually based in call centres, I don't have a computer
:12:24. > :12:29.and so they hang up. Those that get caught, they are paying anything
:12:29. > :12:35.from a a few pound to a couple of hundred of pounds.
:12:35. > :12:39.What's the way to get rid of them? Do you say "I didn't ask you to
:12:39. > :12:43.call me.". First of all, put the phone down or tell them you are
:12:43. > :12:48.reporting them to the police. That tends to get them worried fast.
:12:48. > :12:52.And Trading Standards, what are you doing to tackle this? We we try and
:12:52. > :12:55.raise awareness, it is difficult to actually investigate and try and
:12:55. > :13:00.take prosecutions against scammers who are based thousands of miles
:13:00. > :13:02.away. We try and educate people and give them the tool and the skills

:14:55. > :14:59.about the Broadband speeds here in Cookstown? We don't live in
:14:59. > :15:06.Cookstown, the Broadband speed is atrocious where we live though.
:15:06. > :15:11.Really? Very, very low. I can talk about wanting to get Broadband out
:15:11. > :15:16.there since December 2nd and we haven't got it. You seem frustrated
:15:16. > :15:20.about that? Very. It means we can't send or receive e-mails. It's awful.
:15:20. > :15:25.It's nice Cookstown, even has Broadband and electricity, so quite
:15:25. > :15:29.happy. Must be annoying being at home wants to get on the web, do
:15:29. > :15:33.some shopping? You can make yourself coffee and have toast
:15:33. > :15:37.before they would download anything. It depends whereabouts you are and
:15:37. > :15:42.how close you are to the boxes as well. Some can't get Broadband at
:15:42. > :15:45.all, they are still on dial-up. I've been with a different Internet
:15:45. > :15:49.connection. I have a new one which is a bit faster, whether that's

:16:05. > :16:11.What do you think about the Broadband speed? I don't know
:16:11. > :16:15.really I just use it and whatever is there it's there. It's quite
:16:15. > :16:21.slow. How does that hinder your every day life? It can hold you
:16:21. > :16:25.back on transferring stuff and e- mailing. How are you today? Would
:16:25. > :16:31.you say your Broadband speed is fast or slow? Normal. Normal. Have
:16:31. > :16:36.you no problems with it at all? at my time of life I've no problems.
:16:36. > :16:41.Whenever I've been on it, it could be quicker. Is it annoying trying
:16:41. > :16:45.to log on? No, just have to have a bit of patience. You seem easy-
:16:45. > :16:50.going so it wouldn't bother you too much? No, it wouldn't.
:16:50. > :16:52.Each week, our reporter, Chris Moore tackles one of the tougher
:16:53. > :16:57.storys that the In Your Corner team has been looking at. This week you
:16:57. > :17:02.have been investigating the worrying rise in the use of illegal
:17:02. > :17:05.steroids? That's right. Normally associated with performance-
:17:05. > :17:09.enhancement, today steroid abuse goes well beyond sport or body
:17:09. > :17:13.building. I've been looking at how young men in Northern Ireland have
:17:13. > :17:18.been going to extraordinary, possibly deadly lengths in pursuit
:17:18. > :17:22.of the perfect body. 2012, the year of the London
:17:22. > :17:26.Olympics and athletes all over the world will have been busy preparing
:17:26. > :17:30.to make sure they are at peak fitness this summer. But the drug
:17:30. > :17:34.testers have been and will continue to be vigilant. Here in Northern
:17:34. > :17:37.Ireland, another group of people have been putting themselves at
:17:37. > :17:43.risk by taking performance- enhancing drugs, not in the name of
:17:43. > :17:49.sport, but so that young men can take six-pack bodies on holiday
:17:49. > :17:54.this summer. Men training for better sporting
:17:54. > :18:04.fulfilment to push themselves on to new levels of excellence.
:18:04. > :18:05.
:18:05. > :18:08.Some are prepared to cheat using drugs to succeed. I'm in Ballymena
:18:08. > :18:13.to meet a former body builder who used steroids in the '70s, but
:18:13. > :18:20.today through his work as a gym Instructor, he's noticing a change
:18:20. > :18:25.in the use of steroids. The it's the image enhancing use of steroids
:18:25. > :18:29.what's most prevalent today. That's the main aspect of steroids
:18:29. > :18:33.nowadays, image. It's also the image from magazines. Young guys
:18:33. > :18:37.maybe going on holidays, no-one wants to be the six stone weakling.
:18:37. > :18:43.For some young men, they'll go there simply to take a course of
:18:43. > :18:47.steroids because they're going on holiday in a few weeks' time.
:18:47. > :18:51.and more young men here are injecting steroids. In fact, such
:18:51. > :18:57.is the marked increase that the needle exchange scheme in Northern
:18:57. > :19:01.Ireland initially set up for heroin users recently introduced a steroid
:19:01. > :19:06.pack, specially for steroid users who were using the scheme to get
:19:06. > :19:11.clean needles. We have seen over the last most recent 12 month
:19:11. > :19:16.period of all the requests for needles, there's been maybe a
:19:16. > :19:20.quarter of those come from sports people. There's actually quite a
:19:20. > :19:24.few thousand people we'd estimate from national studies. In Northern
:19:24. > :19:28.Ireland, we don't actually know for sure Mau many people there are, but

:20:06. > :20:11.started to take the calcium out of my joints and I needed both hips

:20:37. > :20:40.year-old Enniskillen man Seamus Warrington died in 2009 after
:20:40. > :20:44.injecting steroids. His inquest found that continued use of
:20:44. > :20:49.steroids had caused his heart to increase to twice the average size
:20:49. > :20:54.for a man whilst narrowing his main coronary arteries.
:20:54. > :20:59.I've spoken to a man using anabolic steroids but isn't too concerned
:20:59. > :21:02.about the effect they'll have on his health. He wanted to remain
:21:02. > :21:05.anonymous. When you first start taking the
:21:05. > :21:10.steroids, do you have any concerns at all that this might be a harmful
:21:10. > :21:15.thing for your body? No. Seriously, you didn't have any thoughts on
:21:15. > :21:18.that? Not really. That's another myth. I mean, you know, cast your
:21:18. > :21:22.mind across the instance that you have heard of people dying of
:21:22. > :21:27.steroid abuse, it doesn't really happen very often. It does happen.
:21:27. > :21:30.It does happen but more people die of alcohol and nicotine every year
:21:30. > :21:34.than steroids. Steroids wouldn't even rank, it's like smoking or
:21:34. > :21:38.drinking, if you enjoy it, you are going to continue to do it.
:21:38. > :21:42.Maybe in the short-term, the effects could appear to be
:21:42. > :21:49.beneficial, but doctors worry about the long-term.
:21:49. > :21:55.I'm worried about effects on their cardiac system, even liver faillure,
:21:55. > :21:59.infertility, psychiatric facts, anger. So there's wide ranging
:21:59. > :22:09.effects, short-term and long-term. So what motivates young men to risk
:22:09. > :22:12.
:22:12. > :22:16.their health for image? Low self- esteem, introvert. Go to the gym,
:22:16. > :22:23.meet a guy with all these muscles and suddenly it clicks and the
:22:23. > :22:30.steroid thing is a way of almost creating a mask where they're no
:22:30. > :22:32.longer the weak guy in the corner. For sportsmen and women, the use of
:22:32. > :22:35.performance-enhancing drugs is something they do in private, the
:22:35. > :22:40.same for those who use the drugs to make themselves look better, sexier.
:22:40. > :22:44.So there is a hidden world of steroid use. No-one wants to talk
:22:44. > :22:48.about it openly. For those who've tried to bring the issue into the
:22:48. > :22:52.public domain, they've been met with a wall of silence.
:22:52. > :22:55.It's got to take a multiagency perspective on this. People from
:22:56. > :23:05.the Health Services, Local Government, education, so a wide
:23:06. > :23:13.
:23:13. > :23:16.ranging and even the media, a wide ranging amount of agencies. If you
:23:16. > :23:21.are healthy, no need the take steroids.
:23:21. > :23:23.Dr Gavin is a sports psychologist at the University of Ulster and
:23:23. > :23:27.Owen O'Neil is from the public health agency. Owen, you have been
:23:27. > :23:34.doing some work on this, and you have found out about it all in a
:23:34. > :23:37.rather interesting way, didn't you? We did. We certainly are aware that
:23:37. > :23:43.steroid use is increasing and certainly the trend across the
:23:43. > :23:48.water is certainly that. Whether that replicates here I think is
:23:48. > :23:52.remaining to be seen. The needles exchange forum, made up of
:23:52. > :23:58.pharmacists, service users and other drug and alcohol services
:23:58. > :24:03.working in the field noticed there was an increase in requests for
:24:03. > :24:07.steroid packs. We developed specific steroid packs in July last
:24:07. > :24:10.year. In fact we have got one of them here on the table? That's
:24:11. > :24:15.right. That must be an indication that it's an increasing problem
:24:15. > :24:19.here? It is. We have looked at the number of packs that have been
:24:19. > :24:26.distributed through the pharmacy since July. It's 5% of the total
:24:26. > :24:32.number of packs going out through the exchanges, so it's a small
:24:32. > :24:37.issue at present. We are certainly taking the issue very seriously.
:24:37. > :24:40.The other bit of work that we are doing, which was highlighted in the
:24:40. > :24:45.video link, was around linking in with gyms and the excellent work
:24:46. > :24:50.that Billy's doing and one of the local community addiction services
:24:50. > :24:59.in that area distributes packs through Billy to get to the store
:24:59. > :25:02.oid using comaunt. That's the type of approach we need to promote --
:25:02. > :25:07.steroid using-community. Gavin, you have been looking at steroid abuse.
:25:07. > :25:14.What have you found out? Similar to Owen. We are looking at why people
:25:14. > :25:18.are taking the steroids and we have had increases in anecdotal evidence
:25:18. > :25:22.from GPs that people are coming to them seeking advice. So at the
:25:22. > :25:27.University of The sports institute, we are trying to explore why, so
:25:27. > :25:31.looking at the health beliefs of those individuals whether they're
:25:31. > :25:35.weightlifters and what sort of things they're doing. Their health
:25:35. > :25:39.beliefs is behind it. When you see someone like Billy and
:25:39. > :25:43.what it's done to his body, it's alarming that a young guy would
:25:43. > :25:46.think this was a good idea just to look good on the beach, wouldn't
:25:47. > :25:52.it? That's the case what we are faced with. People are looking for
:25:52. > :25:58.the quick fix and because they are, essentially, they are looking to
:25:59. > :26:01.take steroids that lead to risky behaviours, at least leading to
:26:02. > :26:08.health problems. Trying to understand why they go to their GPs
:26:08. > :26:12.for help. In many cases they don't. Going to their GPs is a last resort
:26:12. > :26:18.in many cases. It means they are developing certain difficulties or
:26:18. > :26:21.trying to self-treat or look after themselves via maybe cluster groups
:26:22. > :26:25.so different groups that have been sharing needles with or they are
:26:25. > :26:29.going on websites that aren't as reliable. So our study is trying to
:26:29. > :26:35.really determine what are the factors and he telt beliefs and how
:26:35. > :26:39.can we try to see to the guys who've been looking for help, how
:26:39. > :26:44.we can facilitate that further with the help and intervention.
:26:44. > :26:48.We have been doing research of our own and we got in touch with some
:26:48. > :26:53.sporting organisations. The IFA and the GAA in Ulster have come back to
:26:53. > :26:56.us. The IFA said, we take the issue of steroids and illegal performance
:26:56. > :26:59.enhancing drugs in young people seriously and support any
:26:59. > :27:03.educational campaign around this or initiative. GAA pretty much the
:27:03. > :27:08.same, happy to endorse any programme aimed at raising
:27:08. > :27:12.awareness, the important health and well-being issues have a place in
:27:12. > :27:15.the community. Is that what you can tap into now, given this stuff is
:27:15. > :27:19.so available on the Internet? welcome to work with any
:27:19. > :27:25.organisation. The one thing I would say is that learning from our
:27:25. > :27:31.experience in terms of addressing heroin misuse, again which is a
:27:31. > :27:36.hidden problem with very underground groups, the best way to
:27:36. > :27:40.do that is to target that community, low-key, in a sensitive manner.
:27:40. > :27:44.That's good to hear. Thank you both of you very much.
