:02:35. > :02:38.scam where one call can empty your entire bank account. Already

:02:39. > :02:47.thousands have fallen foul of it. It is clever, it's complex and even the

:02:48. > :02:51.smartest have been taken in by it. This is Mary Berners-Lee. As crime

:02:52. > :02:55.victims go, she might appear typical, but she's not. You see, Mrs

:02:56. > :03:02.Berners-Lee is a highly regarded mathematician who helped create the

:03:03. > :03:06.world's first commercial computer. She's also mother to Sir Tim

:03:07. > :03:13.Berners-Lee, man who invented the World Wide Web, so it is fair to say

:03:14. > :03:19.she's smart. Yet even she was outstart -- outsmarted by the

:03:20. > :03:23.courier scammers. I was out shopping and the phone rang. It was

:03:24. > :03:28.Hammersmith police station telling me they had just arrested two young

:03:29. > :03:33.men in recent street who had a clone of my debit card and had already

:03:34. > :03:38.used it to defraud me of approximately 850. But the man

:03:39. > :03:43.wasn't really from the police. He was a professional con artist and

:03:44. > :03:49.everything he told Mrs Berners-Lee was a work of fiction. Her card

:03:50. > :03:52.hadn't been cloned, she hasn't lost any money and no-one had been

:03:53. > :03:57.arrested a. Yet he was so convincing she took him at his word. I was

:03:58. > :04:00.anxious. They told me to ring the number on the back of my card and

:04:01. > :04:04.get through to the national fraud department. So she hung up and

:04:05. > :04:08.immediately picked up again to make the call. But what she didn't know

:04:09. > :04:13.was the fraudsters were still on the line. Because if someone calls your

:04:14. > :04:18.landline and doesn't hang up at their end, they remain connected to

:04:19. > :04:21.you for up to two minutes. Hello, national fraud department... This is

:04:22. > :04:26.the keep to the scam. They've got an open phone line. Even if you phone

:04:27. > :04:30.999 to, that it wasn't connect tow the emergency services. That's what

:04:31. > :04:36.it makes it so convincing, because you are duped into thinking you

:04:37. > :04:41.phoned a legitimate number, but you are still speaking to the people

:04:42. > :04:47.committed the crime. I spoke to somebody and he told me there was

:04:48. > :04:50.somebody in the bank who was giving away details of bank accounts and

:04:51. > :04:57.cards and they wanted to catch them quickly. The scammer told Mr

:04:58. > :05:01.Berners-Lee this employee was also forging money and in order to catch

:05:02. > :05:06.him they needed her her. All she had to do was go to the bank and

:05:07. > :05:09.withdraw ?6,000. She needn't worry about the large amount because the

:05:10. > :05:14.cash was counterfeit and wouldn't really be coming out of her account.

:05:15. > :05:18.She was then told once she brought it home a courier would pick it up

:05:19. > :05:21.and take it to the police. Because she thought he was speaking to the

:05:22. > :05:26.genuine fraud department, she agreed. I had given him details of

:05:27. > :05:31.my bank account and even told him how much was in it. How ridiculous!

:05:32. > :05:36.I'm one of these people that if you are hon host you believe what you

:05:37. > :05:40.are told. We have insurance managers, teachers, ex-police

:05:41. > :05:51.officers being duped into this. In one or two recent warrant we

:05:52. > :05:55.recovered a book called How To Improve Your Confidence knees are

:05:56. > :05:59.thoroughly convinced that this is the right thing to do. Mrs

:06:00. > :06:07.Berners-Lee was told to tell the bank she needed the ?6,000 to pay

:06:08. > :06:12.for roofing work and warned not to deviate from the story. But the

:06:13. > :06:16.cashier was suspicious. The manager was worried and persuaded her not to

:06:17. > :06:21.make the withdraw. Even though she returned home empty handed the

:06:22. > :06:25.fraudsters refused to give up. They rang again and I said I hadn't

:06:26. > :06:31.convinced the bank that I needed the money. He sent me to try fen for

:06:32. > :06:34.?3,000. In the end I did what the rogues said, you tell them in the

:06:35. > :06:39.end the money is yours, you have a right to it. The bank manager

:06:40. > :06:44.looking a bit sad said yes, and I went back to the teller and got the

:06:45. > :06:49.?3,000. I thought they were forged notes. But of course they weren't.

:06:50. > :06:54.This was ?3,000 of her own money, and a few hours after she returned

:06:55. > :07:00.home, a man claiming to be a courier arrived to collect it. I was told to

:07:01. > :07:06.put it not a bag and the man came to the door, a courier. I just handed

:07:07. > :07:11.the bag over. I just handed the bag over. It was only later that night

:07:12. > :07:15.that dawned on Mrs Berners-Lee she may have been conned. When she

:07:16. > :07:20.called the police the following day, they confirmed it. I felt very

:07:21. > :07:25.foolish, very sick, angry. This was dreadful. I felt really I had been

:07:26. > :07:31.very stupid. Mary Berners-Lee isn't stupid. She is a well-educated

:07:32. > :07:35.bright individual, but this is where they dupe people who you think this

:07:36. > :07:38.would never happy to - young people, old people, vulnerable people,

:07:39. > :07:47.bright, intelligent people. Anyone can be a victim of this scam.

:07:48. > :07:52.Police! You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit courier fraud.

:07:53. > :07:55.Police are still investigating Mrs Berners-Lees case and believe many

:07:56. > :08:02.different gangs are in operation. Arrests are being made, but it is up

:08:03. > :08:07.to all of us to remain on our guard. With me now from the City of London

:08:13. > :08:17.stop to this? There's loads of good work going on. Forces up and down

:08:21. > :08:26.suspects. There is investigation work with bank staff, taxi firms.

:08:27. > :08:30.Some really good stuff. The nub of the problem seems to be that

:08:31. > :08:33.two-minute lag whereby somebody on the other end doesn't have to put

:08:34. > :08:37.down the phone and they can hear what's going on. Why don't you get

:08:38. > :08:43.the telephone companies to stop that? We have, in fact the

:08:44. > :08:48.Metropolitan Police have worked with Ofcom and the telephone providers

:08:49. > :08:51.they are bringing the time down from two minutes to two seconds. It's not

:08:52. > :08:58.quite there yet, but hopefully by the beginning of summer 2015 it will

:12:53. > :12:56.fix your car or van. I've come to Nottingham to meet no fewer than

:12:57. > :13:01.three different complainants. They all have a different story to tell.

:18:29. > :18:32.chances are you won't be pulling it in and out to test the strength. All

:18:33. > :18:35.you care about is the quality of the picture. Look at the two screens and

:18:36. > :18:40.I think you'll agree there no difference whatsoever. However staff

:18:41. > :18:46.don't always admit to that. Paul contacted Watchdog to complain about

:18:47. > :18:51.the way his local Currys PC World stall was selling HDMI cables. He

:18:52. > :18:57.heard salesmen telling customers are needed by the most expensive one if

:18:58. > :19:02.they want to the best possible pictures on an HDTV but Paul is a

:19:03. > :19:11.self-confessed technical person and he knows that's not true. An HDMI

:19:12. > :19:17.cable is actually very simple. It either works or it doesn't. It

:19:18. > :19:20.carries the video and audio signals that make up the picture that make

:19:21. > :19:24.up the picture that you see on television. It carries those in a

:19:25. > :19:29.digital format that means it converts the signals to ones and

:19:30. > :19:35.zeros and reconstructs the pictures at the other end. Because its

:19:36. > :19:41.digital, it's correct or incorrect. It is correct, a perfect picture. If

:19:42. > :19:45.it incorrect, no picture at all. In a normal domestic environment, a

:19:46. > :19:47.cheap cable is as good as an expensive cable and both will

:19:48. > :19:53.provide perfect quality, no difference at all. Was this typical

:19:54. > :20:01.of the way the cables are being sold? Time to find out. We visited

:20:02. > :20:08.15 branches across the UK looking for an HDMI cable to connect to

:20:09. > :20:13.television and we asked staff about the difference in picture quality

:20:14. > :20:44.between the two cables. Here is what the first salesperson had to say.

:20:45. > :20:49.This is what all sales staff should be saying and two more stores,

:20:50. > :20:54.that's exactly what we were told. In another three, the device was

:20:55. > :20:59.confusing and in the end they advised we buy the cheapest cable.

:21:00. > :21:01.But in the remaining nine stores, the information we were given was

:21:02. > :22:03.very clear and very wrong. And once again, incorrect. In each

:22:04. > :22:06.of the nine stores with a clearly advised to go for more expensive

:22:07. > :22:32.cables if we wanted the best picture quality.

:22:33. > :22:39.So what is going on? Why did the sales staff in some stores get their

:22:40. > :22:43.information so right, whilst the majority got it so wrong? Surely

:22:44. > :23:03.customer services would set the record straight?

:23:04. > :23:09.Even their customer services don't know what they are talking about. So

:23:10. > :23:14.let's put you in the picture. The message couldn't be clearer. You

:23:15. > :23:15.don't have to spend a fortune on an HDMI cable. No matter what anybody

:31:20. > :31:24.routes operated by the three biggest companies to offer WiFi. East Coast

:31:25. > :31:30.operating unsurprisingly up the East Coast. Virgin, who operates the West

:31:31. > :31:35.Coast line, and Cross Country, who operate the line between Bristol and

:31:36. > :31:39.Newcastle. We sent our researchers on a return journey on each line.

:31:40. > :31:44.They had special programmes to test two things - the reliability of the

:31:45. > :31:49.connections of the internet for the entirety of the journey, and the

:31:50. > :31:52.speed it takes to download a small file while travelling. Fist up

:31:53. > :31:57.connection. On East Coast, a return journey between London and

:31:58. > :32:04.Edinburgh, we were disconnected for 20. 65% of the time. On Virgin, a

:32:05. > :32:09.return journey between London and Glasgow, we were disconnected for

:32:10. > :32:12.17. 81% of the time. But Cross Country fared much better. On a

:32:13. > :32:17.return journey between Bristol and Newcastle, we were disconnected for

:32:18. > :32:24.3. 26% of the time. So despite the fact they all promised connectivity

:32:25. > :32:27.for the entire journey the WiFi of East Coast and Japan was

:32:28. > :32:29.disconnected for almost a fifth of the time.

:32:30. > :32:37.Next up we have speed. The amount of time it takes to download a small

:32:38. > :32:41.file like this. A high-quality picture of maybe one of your

:32:56. > :33:06.Virgin, it took us the 1 minute and 52 seconds to download.

:39:57. > :40:02.else's name on it. So how will we get in? The secondary sites have

:40:03. > :40:05.warned customers they will have to pick up their tickets on the night

:41:39. > :41:42.cheat the security measures put in place by the concert organisers.

:41:47. > :41:51.ticket, but they've resold up to three others at a massive profit,

:41:52. > :41:55.thereby ex-including fans who aren't wealthy enough to pay anything

:42:00. > :42:04.tickets for sale on three of the four main secondary sites. But for

:45:18. > :45:21.allow them the opportunity to get it and that provides a real service.

:45:25. > :45:30.all. How would you feel, you bought your home but you can't sell it or

:45:31. > :45:32.you could only sell to make a 5% profit on it. Once you bought the

:45:36. > :45:39.anything you want with it, just as you do with pretty much anything

:45:40. > :45:45.else you buy. It's different to a house or a car. It's different. Why?

:45:46. > :45:51.It's an event for genuine fans, your investment property, but a ticket

:45:52. > :45:55.shouldn't be an investment. It's not an investment. The vast majority of

:45:56. > :45:59.people who buy it are not reselling it. A few people are selling it. If

:46:00. > :46:04.they feel like they want to make more money on it, and a fan couldn't

:46:05. > :46:09.get tickets originally and are willing to pay the extra, why should

:46:10. > :46:15.they be restricted? They are not restricted from doing that in any

:46:16. > :46:20.other area. I should tell you Seat-Wave have refunded our ticket

:46:21. > :46:36.but it's clear the measures were unpopular with secondary ticketing

:46:37. > :46:39.agencies. Viagogo says it's an attempt by artist to restrict

:46:40. > :46:42.reselling the ticket is a violation of consumer rights and that selling

:46:43. > :46:46.second-hand Kate Bush ticket is perfectly legal. We asked you for

:46:47. > :46:51.your view on the second hand to get market should be regulated and

:46:52. > :46:56.overwhelmingly, you said yes but the Department for Culture, Media and
