:00:08. > :00:10.The Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Machine.

:00:11. > :00:13.It claims to have a filter that removes "any impurities" from tap

:00:14. > :00:16.water, giving you "the very cleanest water" for your baby's formula.

:00:17. > :00:22.Not according to our tests on machines used by real families.

:00:23. > :00:34.We have something that is much, much more contaminated than tap water.

:00:35. > :00:49.Hello and welcome to Watchdog, from our home at BBC

:00:50. > :01:00.working as well as they say. claim to be healthy but aren't

:01:01. > :01:03.the Fitbit fitness tracker and dietary supplements Juice Plus.

:01:04. > :01:08.We reveal the problems that you need to know about.

:01:09. > :01:19.The cost of the fuel to get you there might be

:01:20. > :01:22.And that's what Team Watchdog are looking at tonight,

:01:23. > :01:32.manufactures make? per gallon claims car

:01:33. > :01:38.I upgraded because it will save me money.

:01:39. > :01:45.Plus, Nikki Fox has set up camp outside the BBC.

:01:46. > :01:47.I've investigated one of the biggest caravan park companies,

:01:48. > :01:49.Park Dean Resorts, who have 73 parks across the UK.

:01:50. > :01:55.We've heard from elderly owners who were told they had to leave

:01:56. > :02:09.Maureen couldn't walk and we had to cut a hole and build a ramp. It was

:02:10. > :02:13.a lot of stress that. And then two weeks after, she died.

:02:14. > :02:16.And in tonight's Rogue Traders, a car dealer who knows

:02:17. > :02:20.his responsibilities and completely ignores them.

:02:21. > :02:29.I look at it that way, you sell it to an old lady, I would rather

:02:30. > :02:33.straight cars and make money and that is it.

:02:34. > :02:36.So why is the car we bought not fit for the road?

:02:37. > :02:38.But first, we've been conducting tests on this,

:02:39. > :02:39.the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Machine.

:02:40. > :02:42.You use it to make bottles for your baby, but the results

:02:43. > :02:48.of our tests have raised some interesting questions.

:02:49. > :02:52.And feeding them with formula can be a military operation.

:02:53. > :02:56.the kettle, fill it, wait for it to boil and then wait

:02:57. > :03:02.Then there's the powder, which needs measuring and mixing in.

:03:03. > :03:05.And finally you have to check it's all served up at a safe

:03:06. > :03:09.All this because a baby's immune system isn't as strong

:03:10. > :03:13.So the NHS and the World Health Organisation recommend parents

:03:14. > :03:20.sterilise everything and only use boiled water.

:03:21. > :03:26.Because Tommee Tippee claim to have come up with a revolutionary

:03:27. > :03:34.It looks like an espresso machine and according to Tommee Tippee

:03:35. > :03:41.it's the "smart" option for weary parents.

:03:42. > :03:44.You can keep making every bottle the long and hard way,

:03:45. > :03:48.juggling bottles and heating water while trying to keep baby calm

:03:49. > :03:51.or you can get smart and let the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep

:03:52. > :03:55.Machine do all the hard work in just two minutes.

:03:56. > :03:58.So how does the Perfect Prep Machine manage to make formula

:03:59. > :04:08.doesn't use boiling water. waiting around because it

:04:09. > :04:15.spurt of hot, but not boiling, water that the company says "kills

:04:16. > :04:20.Then cold tap water is added that's passed

:04:21. > :04:26.Tommee Tippee claims the filter "removes any impurities" giving

:04:27. > :04:30.you "the very cleanest water for baby's formula".

:04:31. > :04:33.It all sounds, well, perfect. But is this machine doing the job

:04:34. > :04:38.as well as using the traditional method of boiling your water?

:04:39. > :04:43.And is it worth paying out around ?100 for it?

:04:44. > :04:47.We decided to test it out for ourselves.

:04:48. > :04:49.And to help interpret the test results I've enlisted the help

:04:50. > :04:55.We sent five machines used in the real world by real parents

:04:56. > :05:03.They contained filters that had been used regularly in ordinary

:05:04. > :05:06.households for between six and nine weeks - well within the three month

:05:07. > :05:10.limit that Tommee Tippee advise before replacing the filter.

:05:11. > :05:16.with sterile cold water. filled the machines

:05:17. > :05:21.Well we know that the water that the lab's put into the machine

:05:22. > :05:26.So if we do find bacteria coming out at the other end we know that it's

:05:27. > :05:35.It could be very interesting. could be very telling.

:05:36. > :05:39.that came out of the machine, cultured and incubated them to allow

:05:40. > :05:44.In all of the tests the lab carried out the bacteria level

:05:45. > :05:46.of the sterile water AFTER it had passed through the machine

:05:47. > :05:51.was HIGHER than levels you'd expect to find in cold tap water.

:05:52. > :05:53.In some cases only slightly higher, but some tests found levels

:05:54. > :06:05.contaminated than tap water. actually much much more

:06:06. > :06:08.claims their filter "removes any impurities from the water".

:06:09. > :06:10.But our test shows that those used filters

:06:11. > :06:14.The exact opposite of what the filter should do.

:06:15. > :06:18.But what about filters fresh out of the box?

:06:19. > :06:22.To find out how effective they are - the lab filled a machine containing

:06:23. > :06:26.called Pseudomonas. of a common bacteria

:06:27. > :06:32.Well to be fair the lab did put a huge amount

:06:33. > :06:35.of bacteria through the filter to really challenge it.

:06:36. > :06:38.At first the filter worked really, really well and even

:06:39. > :06:41.despite the amount of bacteria that we put through there were no

:06:42. > :06:46.But unfortunately by the third and fourth test - bacteria

:06:47. > :06:50.were starting to filter through and get into the water.

:06:51. > :06:58.could build up over time. from the other test how this

:06:59. > :07:03.We asked consultant paediatrician Ravi Jayaram to look

:07:04. > :07:08.He told us that any risk to healthy babies is incredibly low.

:07:09. > :07:11.However, he adds that although it remains incredibly low risk extra

:07:12. > :07:16.for vulnerable babies. load" - could possibly be a problem

:07:17. > :07:21.conditions such as immune deficiencies or cystic fibrosis may

:07:22. > :07:27.be at higher risk by being exposed to higher bacteria loads.

:07:28. > :07:30.Now even though the bacteria load is still low there is a potential

:07:31. > :07:32.that the babies are exposed to a higher load and therefore

:07:33. > :07:37.Tommee Tippee has produced a machine that doesn't use boiled water

:07:38. > :07:44.But is it as good as making formula the old fashioned way?

:07:45. > :07:46.We asked two of the biggest formula manufacturers which method

:07:47. > :07:54.They both said just use boiled water.

:07:55. > :07:57.So is Tommee Tippee's Perfect Prep machine really worth the price?

:07:58. > :08:04.And isn't it time the company took another look at its claims?

:08:05. > :08:06.We provided Tommee Tippee with the results of our tests

:08:07. > :08:08.and asked them for their response to our findings.

:08:09. > :08:19.They sent us the following statement.

:08:20. > :08:21.We completely refute the allegations made by Watchdog, who,

:08:22. > :08:23.despite repeated requests, have refused to provide us with

:08:24. > :08:27.We have shared the limited data provided to us with a leading

:08:28. > :08:30.professor of microbiology at a top UK university, who has stated that

:08:31. > :08:32.Watchdog is "scaremongering", the microbiology is "fundamentally

:08:33. > :08:41.flawed" and "the results presented simply do not stand scientifically."

:08:42. > :08:51.You know what you're getting this time of year, a lot of calories.

:08:52. > :08:56.But in January, when you're looking to get a bit fitter,

:08:57. > :08:59.here's something that vould catch you out.

:09:00. > :09:02.This is the Tesco Healthy Living range which sells itself

:09:03. > :09:05.as being "low in fat" or "reduced fat".

:09:06. > :09:09.But when you compare some of them to Tesco's Everyday Value range,

:09:10. > :09:20.You find the Healthy option has more fat than the regular one.

:09:21. > :09:29.Healthy Living option 7.3g of fat per pack.

:09:30. > :09:36.Next, sweet and sour chicken with rice.

:09:37. > :09:48.And finally, coleslaw which is described as "reduced fat".

:09:49. > :09:55.Per tablespoon, the Healthy Living one contains 5.5g of fat.

:09:56. > :10:00.And the Everyday Value one, just 3.5g.

:10:01. > :10:05.And the Everyday Value products are cheaper.

:10:06. > :10:08.We contacted Tesco about this, who said.

:10:09. > :10:10."Products are always clearly labelled with their nutritional

:10:11. > :10:12.content so that customers can make informed decisions

:10:13. > :10:21.Two more health and fitness products to watch out for coming up later,

:10:22. > :10:26.Tonight's Rogue Traders are messing around with our lives.

:10:27. > :10:29.Selling cars that don't just endanger the drivers,

:10:30. > :10:31.but others who might be unlucky enough to share

:10:32. > :10:52.Lancashire, north west of England, home to the beautiful Ribble Valley

:10:53. > :11:00.But let me warn you, the north west also has a beguiling

:11:01. > :11:12.The A57 meets M67, M60 and it all takes a place on top

:11:13. > :11:22.And it's not to be attempted unless your vehicle is in tip top

:11:23. > :11:27.Which it may not be if you bought it from nearby

:11:28. > :11:29.Euxton Motor Company Ltd, which changed its name

:11:30. > :11:34.from Euxton Car Sales as of June this year.

:11:35. > :11:40.They've been selling cars since 2003 and claim to have a "Fantastic

:11:41. > :11:42.selection of quality used cars", providing a "personal customer

:11:43. > :11:46.Luke Hibbert and Curtis Black specialise in selling

:11:47. > :11:53.Alongside the name change they've also moved premises,

:11:54. > :11:55.presumably to keep one step ahead of the many unsatisfied

:11:56. > :11:59.customers they've sold stinkers to, like Stevie.

:12:00. > :12:05.I had a bit of inheritance money and I thought what better way to buy

:12:06. > :12:09.Stevie really wanted an Audi A3, so she searched online

:12:10. > :12:11.and found this one for sale from Euxton Car Sales

:12:12. > :12:18.Then she went down to their forecourt to have a look.

:12:19. > :12:24.The MOT was tricky, it was advertised as 12 months

:12:25. > :12:28.but when I got there I realised it had three months he said

:12:29. > :12:32.he was gonna get into the garage to get it MOT'd, which he never did.

:12:33. > :12:34.But Stevie loved the car so went ahead and bought it.

:12:35. > :12:37.It wasn't long though before the car had problems.

:12:38. > :12:39.When did it start to go wrong and how?

:12:40. > :12:42.I picked it up on a Saturday and after driving it

:12:43. > :12:48.The warning light for one of the headlights, and the aircon

:12:49. > :12:55.That was the beginning of the obvious faults.

:12:56. > :12:57.Stevie took it to her mechanic who found dangerously

:12:58. > :13:00.fitted suspension bushes, it had underside damage

:13:01. > :13:02.and the aircon fluid was leaking into the engine.

:13:03. > :13:08.Did the garage give you an idea of how much to put it right?

:13:09. > :13:11.He said if I had got the car for ?1,000 I would

:13:12. > :13:18.Having zero luck trying to contact Luke Hibbert for a refund,

:13:19. > :13:21.Stevie put her evidence in front of a judge who ruled in her favour

:13:22. > :13:24.and is now preparing to enforce that judgement,

:13:25. > :13:26.which means the bailiffs could be calling on Euxton

:13:27. > :13:39.I mean, how dangerous could a car be?

:13:40. > :13:42.Malcolm Greenbury exchanged his old car for a Land Rover

:13:43. > :13:48.His car nightmare started only 20 minutes after he'd left

:13:49. > :13:51.the forecourt, as he was driving down the motorway.

:13:52. > :13:55.About 22 miles away from the garage the car started filling up

:13:56. > :13:59.with smoke, the smoke was building and building.

:14:00. > :14:03.I put the hazard lights on and look for somewhere to pull off.

:14:04. > :14:07.I could see smoke coming out the engine, I was on the road works

:14:08. > :14:10.on the M6 motorway and couldn't to pull off.

:14:11. > :14:13.Eventually I saw some cones further ahead by which time

:14:14. > :14:17.So I've got no power steering, it's power assisted steering

:14:18. > :14:20.so doesn't work particularly well, there's no brakes because they work

:14:21. > :14:25.He was coasting down the motorway at 20mph so he pulled onto the hard

:14:26. > :14:30.shoulder and used his handbrake to stop the car.

:14:31. > :14:32.I jumped out of the car, and obviously there was a fire

:14:33. > :14:41.minutes two police cars arrived, got the dry foam, then a few minutes

:14:42. > :14:44.later two fire engines turned up and they got the hoses

:14:45. > :14:48.It could've been a whole lot worse, if I hadn't have found somewhere

:14:49. > :14:51.to pull off then I'd have had to jump out into moving traffic.

:14:52. > :14:58.But this is on same day you bought the vehicle.

:14:59. > :15:04.Another thing Malcolm wasn't prepared for was their reaction

:15:05. > :15:10.I spoke to the dealer and he said it's your fault,

:15:11. > :15:12.it's your problem, you sort it out, mate.

:15:13. > :15:18.After spending near on 4 grand making the car safe,

:15:19. > :15:21.Malcolm found some more worrying news concerning the car's history

:15:22. > :15:25.when the V5 registration document arrived in the post.

:15:26. > :15:28.It told me the vehicle had been written off and because it had been

:15:29. > :15:35.involved in an accident, the cost of repair was more

:15:36. > :15:40.The V5 showed that at some point in the past the car had been salvaged.

:15:41. > :15:42.So they sold you a write-off and never mentioned

:15:43. > :15:49.How close did you think you were to something really

:15:50. > :15:57.You don't travel on the motorway at 20 miles an hour on the motorway

:15:58. > :16:00.whilst still in a lane of traffic, people don't expect that.

:16:01. > :16:08.Catching fire while you're driving, yeah, that's really dangerous.

:16:09. > :16:12.So what we need to do now is buy a car from Euxton Motor Company,

:16:13. > :16:17.Two of our team members are off to Euxton Motor Company Ltd in search

:16:18. > :16:26.But will it need a little tinker, or be a proper stinker?

:16:27. > :16:31.Time now to tell you about another heath product, these dietary

:16:32. > :16:35.They are sold by reps who advertise heavily on social

:16:36. > :16:38.media, using all sorts of extraordinary claims.

:16:39. > :16:42.And because the reps use social media, some of them

:16:43. > :16:46.As well as saying they aid weight loss, a claim even

:16:47. > :16:49.the company doesn't make, some of the sellers also

:16:50. > :16:54.say the tablets can, "help many medical issues such

:16:55. > :16:58.as thyroid problems, depression, Coeliac disease, IBS and arthritis."

:16:59. > :17:04.We weren't so sure about that, so we checked with dietician Anna Daniels.

:17:05. > :17:15.They are huge claims with no hard evidence to back them up. What's

:17:16. > :17:18.worrying is that on the Internet and Facebook, people are being targeted

:17:19. > :17:23.and often they are desperate people who may have tried many things and

:17:24. > :17:27.are having severe symptoms. Simply taking a tablet isn't the answer.

:17:28. > :17:29.We also saw another rep claiming that, "Juice Plus capsules

:17:30. > :17:31.make a great dietary supplement for diabetics."

:17:32. > :17:46.Diabetes is obviously a disease and to make a claim like this, again,

:17:47. > :17:51.could be quite damaging. Diabetics have to watch their diet very

:17:52. > :17:58.carefully and ensure that the insulin levels are controlled. So

:17:59. > :17:59.taking a capsule can't really substitute for a healthy balanced

:18:00. > :18:00.diet. And finally, most worrying,

:18:01. > :18:03.it's been claimed that you should, "Switch your children

:18:04. > :18:06.from medications and multivitamins to Juice Plus",

:18:07. > :18:16.which sounds plain dangerous. Medications and multivitamins

:18:17. > :18:20.prescribed to children by their GP, what they should be taking, they

:18:21. > :18:25.shouldn't be taking advice off the Internet from anyone who isn't their

:18:26. > :18:31.GP or dietician and taking your children off medication could be

:18:32. > :18:32.highly damaging. We put all this to

:18:33. > :18:35.Juice Plus who told us. It does not claim that its capsules

:18:36. > :18:38.have any benefits related to weight loss and it markets products

:18:39. > :18:40.as support for healthy living rather It adds that independent brand

:18:41. > :18:46.advocates occasionally stray off-message and it has a department

:18:47. > :18:50.that takes swift, decisive action when it discovers

:18:51. > :18:52.this, or it is brought So, if you do spot any claims

:18:53. > :18:57.you are suspicious of, tell them, and tell us if you see any product

:18:58. > :19:00.being sold with claims Now this week's nationwide poll

:19:01. > :19:09.is all about things that you say really make a difference when you're

:19:10. > :19:14.trying to decide what car to buy. For example, 81% of Brits say that

:19:15. > :19:17.miles per gallon figures would be an important factor when choosing

:19:18. > :19:20.a new car. And 77% say that the level of CO2

:19:21. > :19:27.emissions are important because of course this affects

:19:28. > :19:31.which tax band your car is in. And to put this into perspective,

:19:32. > :19:34.this compares to just 44% who said the colour of the car

:19:35. > :19:38.would be important. So, since MPG numbers

:19:39. > :19:46.are so important, I've asked Team Watchdog to investigate how far

:19:47. > :19:51.they can trust their MPGs. We've recruited a Team of Watchdog

:19:52. > :19:53.viewers from across the UK. And investigate how to get

:19:54. > :20:05.us all a better deal. we are looking at your cars and just

:20:06. > :20:22.how far a tank of fuel Now there's claim's made aren't

:20:23. > :20:27.there about how many miles per gallon your motor will do,

:20:28. > :20:30.and that can be a big Well we want you to go out

:20:31. > :20:39.and test your real MPG compared to what's advertised,

:20:40. > :20:41.so buckle up, everyone, So what do the team think

:20:42. > :20:48.about their car's fuel economy? I think that in my family I'm

:20:49. > :20:51.the only one that has a diesel car so I think that I'm getting

:20:52. > :20:54.the best mileage. My husband has a gas guzzler

:20:55. > :20:57.so that does tend to cost What we are promised it can do,

:20:58. > :21:02.and what it delivers, and what it says it delivers

:21:03. > :21:10.on the dashboard, none of it is suspicions by hitting the road

:21:11. > :21:16.and keeping a fuel diary for us. If you want to try this at home,

:21:17. > :21:20.here's how it works. We've asked our team

:21:21. > :21:23.to fill their tank to the top then Then they drive until the fuel

:21:24. > :21:29.gauge hits the red. Refill the car to the top again

:21:30. > :21:33.and make a note of how many gallons Divide that up and that gives

:21:34. > :21:41.us their real world MPG. They're then comparing this

:21:42. > :21:43.to the "combined MPG" advertised When cars were first sold

:21:44. > :21:54.to the masses MPG figures weren't a big selling point,

:21:55. > :22:00.although they weren't that bad. In 1908, Henry Ford introduced

:22:01. > :22:03.the Model T, the first mass-produced car, and it can do up to 25

:22:04. > :22:11.miles per gallon. But things started to change

:22:12. > :22:22.during the fuel crisis of the 1970s, which put petrol and diesel prices

:22:23. > :22:27.firmly in the minds of drivers. Led by this public mood,

:22:28. > :22:31.manufacturers focused on making big improvements in fuel economy

:22:32. > :22:34.through the 1980s and 90s. But despite these improvements,

:22:35. > :22:38.even the most economical drivers will find these advertised

:22:39. > :22:40.figures almost impossible And that's all down to how

:22:41. > :22:45.these advertised MPG using what is called the

:22:46. > :22:54.New European Driving Cycle tests, These are laboratory tests

:22:55. > :23:03.and manufacturers have a few tactics up their sleeves to get

:23:04. > :23:08.the best results. They don't use heating,

:23:09. > :23:14.lighting and there are no weather They also push back brake

:23:15. > :23:19.pads to reduce friction, which all help to give

:23:20. > :23:22.an impressive MPG result. figures and what you can actually

:23:23. > :23:32.achieve can leave drivers paying hundreds of pounds

:23:33. > :23:34.more than they thought So how realistic are those

:23:35. > :23:41.advertised MPG scores? When our team tested their real

:23:42. > :23:46.MPG they told us that on average their results were 20%

:23:47. > :23:49.below the combined MPG And the worst result saw a team

:23:50. > :23:56.member telling us their real world MPG being recorded at 66%

:23:57. > :24:00.less than advertised. Coming up, I head to Northampton

:24:01. > :24:04.to help one member of our team try and get closer

:24:05. > :24:13.to his advertised MPG. Steph, an average of 20% lower

:24:14. > :24:15.than the advertised MPG, What can you find out

:24:16. > :24:22.from these tests? I'm sure a lot of people are

:24:23. > :24:25.wondering that. Well, they won't tell you what your

:24:26. > :24:28.MPG in the real world could be, but they do allow you to compare one

:24:29. > :24:32.car with another. The good news is, we

:24:33. > :24:34.contacted the the SMMT, the industry body for car makers,

:24:35. > :24:37.and they told us that there's a new test being introduced next

:24:38. > :24:40.year which will better reflect And, Steph, we've had some more

:24:41. > :24:44.interesting results from this Yes, we asked people to list some

:24:45. > :24:50.of the things they've done over the last 12 months to reduce how

:24:51. > :24:53.much they spend on fuel and they are trying a lot

:24:54. > :24:55.of different things. 24% told us they have changed

:24:56. > :25:08.to a more energy efficient vehicle. And 47% told us they have modified

:25:09. > :25:16.the way they drive to use less fuel. Something that I've suggested one

:25:17. > :25:19.member of Team Watchdog to try out. Your driving style can have a big

:25:20. > :25:25.impact on your real MPG so I've come to Northampton to meet Arif Rahman

:25:26. > :25:29.to give him, and you, some tips Arif bought his car several months

:25:30. > :25:36.ago to travel to and from university and is far from happy

:25:37. > :25:47.with his fuel economy. You haven't had this car long,

:25:48. > :25:50.did you know the miles to Arif's car for a week,

:25:51. > :26:08.to see exactly what fuel economy he was getting and whether his

:26:09. > :26:10.driving style might First up, his car is

:26:11. > :26:17.advertised as 74.3mpg. That's actually not

:26:18. > :26:28.far off my old car. And one of the reasons I upgraded

:26:29. > :26:32.to this is because it's going to be our experts have pointed out some

:26:33. > :26:38.simple tips to help him and the rest First up, Arif's data

:26:39. > :26:44.shows hard acceleration, Drive smoothly away from standing

:26:45. > :26:51.starts to increase MPG. When your foot is off

:26:52. > :26:54.the accelerator in modern cars, So when you know you're coming up

:26:55. > :27:01.to a stop take your foot off the accelerator,

:27:02. > :27:06.and let the car slow down at its own pace instead of

:27:07. > :27:11.slamming on the brakes. As we're coming to these

:27:12. > :27:15.lights, slow down. It goes green, so there

:27:16. > :27:21.we go, straight off. Another obvious thing is speed,

:27:22. > :27:26.so 10 mph can so reducing air resistance by 25%,

:27:27. > :27:29.the more fuel you use. I leave Arif with his tips

:27:30. > :27:32.and we continue to monitor his data for a week, to see if he can

:27:33. > :27:54.make his car more fuel efficient. It's been going good, it feels like

:27:55. > :27:58.a driving diet. LAUGHTER Overall, you're miles per gallon has

:27:59. > :28:01.gone up by 6% because you are a better driver. That's good news.

:28:02. > :28:03.Still work to be done. And that 6% improvement could see

:28:04. > :28:06.a reduction of around ?160 Now, over the series we've been

:28:07. > :28:19.telling you about some of the latest frauds affecting people

:28:20. > :28:20.across the UK. Most of them start with

:28:21. > :28:23.an email or a phone call. Tonight's is a bit different,

:28:24. > :28:29.and it's particularly believable. It all starts when you get

:28:30. > :28:31.a letter like this, claiming It's got the bank's logo, address

:28:32. > :28:39.and also a signature from a customer The letter says there have been some

:28:40. > :28:45."unusual transactions" on your account and asks you to call

:28:46. > :28:48.a number to confirm When you ring up you get

:28:49. > :28:55.an automated message asking you to type in your card number,

:28:56. > :28:59.account number, sort code, date of birth and digits

:29:00. > :29:04.from your security number. Sometimes you then get passed

:29:05. > :29:08.on to a call centre, possibly even a real Lloyds call

:29:09. > :29:11.centre in some versions of the scam, which can also

:29:12. > :29:14.make it seem legitimate. This is a particularly sophisticated

:29:15. > :29:17.phishing scam and serves as a warning that you should always

:29:18. > :29:20.question correspondence from your bank, no matter

:29:21. > :29:23.how genuine it looks. Lloyds told us that

:29:24. > :29:27.if you are suspicious about any letters you get,

:29:28. > :29:31.contact them using the number on your bank card, as we've

:29:32. > :29:33.said before this series. It's the only number

:29:34. > :29:35.you can completely trust. And of course the same applies

:29:36. > :29:38.to any letter you receive claiming Park Dean Resorts, elderly

:29:39. > :29:49.caravan owners were told they could stay for good,

:29:50. > :29:52.but we heard from many who were told they could be forced out

:29:53. > :29:55.of places they call home. They drove over a hundred miles

:29:56. > :30:00.to get the Christmas tree they wanted from B,

:30:01. > :30:11.only to find it had a faulty plug. We're having a proper rummage around

:30:12. > :30:14.at Exton Motor Company Ltd There may be other car companies

:30:15. > :30:19.with a similar name out there. Unlikely, admittedly,

:30:20. > :30:22.but if there are, then please don't mistake them for this one,

:30:23. > :30:26.on the Preston Road. In Chorley, Lancashire,

:30:27. > :30:28.we've rigged two members of our production team with secret

:30:29. > :30:30.cameras and sent them to the Euxton Motor Company to buy

:30:31. > :30:42.one of their motors. The car we're interested in is

:30:43. > :30:45.a silver Volkswagen polo - oooh but that doesn't mean it

:30:46. > :30:51.shouldn't be roadworthy. It's also being sold

:30:52. > :30:53.as having 12 months MOT, out it out on the open road.

:30:54. > :31:00.so not fine to drive it straight There we go, here's

:31:01. > :31:06.Luke Hibbert and Curtis Black. For the VW, I got lost,

:31:07. > :31:10.I was speaking to one Yeah the polo.

:31:11. > :31:20.Is this your first Normally to get a car started you'd

:31:21. > :31:25.use an ignition key. He has such low expectations

:31:26. > :31:29.of what the car can do, he goes straight for a jump pack -

:31:30. > :31:32.a portable battery with some Once he's given the battery a bit

:31:33. > :31:38.of a boost it's ready It's a good job we're

:31:39. > :31:52.not in a hurry. Now we know it works,

:31:53. > :31:57.the next question. We know it doesn't have

:31:58. > :32:01.a certificate, but that it's No, I'll get it in, I'll

:32:02. > :32:15.get it booked in today, It's got a week and half left

:32:16. > :32:21.on it, it's got a week But we know the certificate for this

:32:22. > :32:25.car expired in March. He's lied to us, and is prepared to

:32:26. > :32:29.let us drive the car out, illegally. It's got a full service

:32:30. > :32:31.history this car. I didn't even know,

:32:32. > :32:36.I don't really check them, Ah so that's 'personal customer

:32:37. > :32:43.service that is second to none' Before we make a decision,

:32:44. > :32:50.Curtis wants to show us Gonna need your jump

:32:51. > :33:03.leads again aren't you? But this one doesn't have much life

:33:04. > :33:06.in it either and even with his trusty jump pack Curtis

:33:07. > :33:09.can't get it started at all. So back to the first

:33:10. > :33:17.car - the Silver Polo. Has that one had any history

:33:18. > :33:20.of accidents at all or is it? It's clear pal, I look it that way,

:33:21. > :33:23.you sell it to an old lady with a family or anything like that

:33:24. > :33:27.and something happens it's on me, I'd just rather, straight cars,

:33:28. > :33:29.make money and that's it, Another lie Curtis,

:33:30. > :33:32.remember, the car he's happy With our possible purchase

:33:33. > :33:36.still running in the background our Although I'm a bit concerned

:33:37. > :33:43.about the surprised it just made. If you put the fuel in there now

:33:44. > :33:46.it'll be as sweet as a nut. us for our 500 quid.

:33:47. > :33:51.what Curtis is going to sell Yeah yeah it's got tax yeah,

:33:52. > :33:56.it's showing tax now. And I'll put it on my database now,

:33:57. > :34:01.I'll put it on the insurance now. As there's no current MOT

:34:02. > :34:03.certificate - any tax or insurance registered

:34:04. > :34:05.on the vehicle is invalid. We soon find out the ?500 we pay

:34:06. > :34:09.for the car is pennies in comparison to what Curtis has raked in in car

:34:10. > :34:16.sales in the last 3 hours. I've sold 5 already this morning,

:34:17. > :34:20.one 4 grand car, one a 1000 pound, one 4.5 grand and I've just sold two

:34:21. > :34:24.online that adds up to 12.5 grand. And he's not the only

:34:25. > :34:26.one raking it in. Luke Hibbert is also

:34:27. > :34:29.benefitting in a big way. You know the Lake District - he's

:34:30. > :34:40.got a million pound boat. by our purchase we want to get this

:34:41. > :34:51.unMOT'd car off the road On Curtis' advice we head just down

:34:52. > :34:55.the road to the petrol station to get some juice for our little

:34:56. > :34:59.runner so that it will make it to the low loader we have safely

:35:00. > :35:02.waiting for us around the corner. Though far from being 'sweet

:35:03. > :35:04.as a nut' after we filled I've just gone to fill it up and now

:35:05. > :35:09.the car won't start. But holy moly - look who's just

:35:10. > :35:13.turned up at the petrol station!? By complete coincidence

:35:14. > :35:16.he came to fill up too. Curtis' first tactic is to use brute

:35:17. > :35:21.force to try and move I'll just chuck my

:35:22. > :35:27.jump pack back on it. Where would we be

:35:28. > :35:33.without Curtis' jump pack. Get it on the motorway and that

:35:34. > :35:36.will charge that easy. I'm an honest company

:35:37. > :35:40.I wouldn't sell you. That's matter of an opinion Curtis -

:35:41. > :35:43.an opinion better given After a trip on a low-loaded

:35:44. > :35:52.lorry it's time our Mike the mechanic and MOT expert

:35:53. > :35:54.gave our run-a-round Mike has been working

:35:55. > :35:59.with cars for over 30 years, and what he doesn't know about cars

:36:00. > :36:02.isn't worth knowing. When I bought the vehicle

:36:03. > :36:10.in the first thing I noticed The engine management light

:36:11. > :36:19.is displayed which indicates a fault - even if they have no mechanical

:36:20. > :36:21.knowledge they should've I'd expect the clutch to last maybe

:36:22. > :36:26.a couple of weeks before it needs replacing - it's an expensive job

:36:27. > :36:28.on any vehicle! Mike estimated the cost

:36:29. > :36:30.of replacing the clutch at 290 Tyres quite badly perished,

:36:31. > :36:35.you can see the cracking It must pass the MOT with a minimum

:36:36. > :36:44.tread depth of 1.6 ml - this car would not pass the mot test

:36:45. > :36:47.with that tyre fitted to it. The one thing I have spotted

:36:48. > :36:53.straight away is the washer bottle. The washer motor is not even

:36:54. > :36:57.connected electrically to anything. Because that's not working

:36:58. > :36:59.that is an MOT fail We knew from the advert

:37:00. > :37:06.that the car's windscreen had a SMALL crack, but this

:37:07. > :37:09.is not small. As you can see there's a on this car

:37:10. > :37:13.there's a continuous crack all the way through - if there's

:37:14. > :37:17.a more than 40 mil worth of damage that's becomes an MOT fail -

:37:18. > :37:21.as you can quite clearly see that area there itself is 400 ml so that

:37:22. > :37:26.vehicle is not road worthy on the basis of that crack

:37:27. > :37:31.on the windscreen. It's at this point you may be asking

:37:32. > :37:35.yourself 'can this get any worse? If you pop round this side notice

:37:36. > :37:41.the steering cowling is all missing. You've got the indicator

:37:42. > :37:45.arm on this side. When we go for the wiper arm,

:37:46. > :37:47.it's missing so we've effectively got no washers or wipers

:37:48. > :37:50.on the vehicle at what point do you realise the washer and wipers

:37:51. > :37:58.aren't going to work - is that at 70 miles an hour when you're

:37:59. > :38:00.approaching the back of a truck? It's definite MOT fail - the washers

:38:01. > :38:03.and wipers are a must. You paid 500 I'd probably pay 50 -

:38:04. > :38:08.it's a scrap vehicle the price of the clutch and the other items

:38:09. > :38:12.that need addressing to make the vehicle road worthy outweigh s

:38:13. > :38:15.the 500 pound of the cost So, we another Euxton Motor Company

:38:16. > :38:24.car that's not street legal, and isn't going to be

:38:25. > :38:26.without spending Luke Hibbert has supplied us

:38:27. > :38:38.with an accident waiting to happen. Not much, a pair of trainers

:38:39. > :38:42.if they're on sale. But it's free to see what happens

:38:43. > :38:46.when we take our car in compact form Stick around for

:38:47. > :38:55.the next ten minutes. Now, Steph, who else has been

:38:56. > :39:05.getting in touch this week? We've had a right mix,

:39:06. > :39:08.including Paul Potts, remember him? Cracking voice and also

:39:09. > :39:12.used to be a supermarket Well, he's a big fan of the show

:39:13. > :39:19.and got in touch to say he couldn't believe that a supermarket had

:39:20. > :39:24.swapped nappies for chorizo. First up is 41-year-old

:39:25. > :39:34.Cheryl Aspinall. She booked a holiday to Portugal

:39:35. > :39:37.for herself and her sister, They were due to travel

:39:38. > :39:47.in September, but earlier this year Cheryl found out she has

:39:48. > :39:49.a congenital heart condition Because Ryanair has a discretionary

:39:50. > :39:55.policy to refund people who are seriously ill,

:39:56. > :39:58.Cheryl applied to get her money back, but the airline refused,

:39:59. > :40:00.despite Cheryl providing letters from her GP and consultant

:40:01. > :40:07.cardiologist. We got in touch with Ryanair

:40:08. > :40:10.who told us the letter from Cheryl's doctor did not say she was unfit

:40:11. > :40:13.to fly or when the surgery But said it would look

:40:14. > :40:16.into the matter further And I'm pleased to tell you,

:40:17. > :40:27.Cheryl's also on the mend. Now if you've been on the hunt

:40:28. > :40:30.for a good Christmas tree, We got an e-mail from James

:40:31. > :40:38.Vannuffell, surname of the series, and his partner Martin

:40:39. > :40:40.after they bought Here it is, the 6ft,

:40:41. > :40:45.pre-lit LED pop-up Christmas tree. James Vannuffell did a 100-mile

:40:46. > :40:49.round trip to collect the tree, but after getting it home,

:40:50. > :40:53.realised the plug didn't work. In fact, it blew the main

:40:54. > :40:59.fuse in the house. Then, when he put the tree back

:41:00. > :41:03.in the box he noticed a returns label, stating the tree

:41:04. > :41:08.did have a faulty plug. So he drove 100 miles round trip

:41:09. > :41:11.again to return the tree, We got in touch with B who told us

:41:12. > :41:18.it has apologised to James and are investigating how

:41:19. > :41:22.he was sold the faulty tree. They've also refunded him

:41:23. > :41:25.for the cost of his trips to B and found him a new tree,

:41:26. > :41:28.but he'd already got If you think you've been treated

:41:29. > :41:51.unfairly and want our help, you can e-mail us at Watchdog@bbc.co.uk,

:41:52. > :41:53.tweet us @bbcwatchdog, go to our They have 73 sites across the UK,

:41:54. > :42:01.a mix of holiday rentals But we've heard from some caravan

:42:02. > :42:05.owners who were told they had Despite being previously

:42:06. > :42:08.told they could stay Decorating your home

:42:09. > :42:15.for Christmas is one And what we all want for Christmas

:42:16. > :42:22.is time with our friends and family Most of those who visit

:42:23. > :42:29.Parkdean Resort's 72 nationwide You can buy a caravan and rent

:42:30. > :42:41.a pitch spending up to 10 months But some residents of

:42:42. > :42:46.Parkdean Resorts have contacted us to say they've been told they'll

:42:47. > :42:48.have to leave their caravans All this despite being

:42:49. > :42:52.told they could stay So they'll be spending

:42:53. > :42:56.their Christmas packing A lot of the residents we've heard

:42:57. > :43:03.from bought their caravans when the sites were owned

:43:04. > :43:05.by a company called Their initial contracts stated

:43:06. > :43:12.that they could have their caravan or pitch for 10 years,

:43:13. > :43:15.then they'd have to spend thousands of pounds on another

:43:16. > :43:20.caravan or move on. This is known as the "age rule".

:43:21. > :43:23.But then in 2004 the sites And the deal seemed to get a whole

:43:24. > :43:28.lot better, Park Resorts told owners that this age rule didn't apply

:43:29. > :43:31.and they could stay in their caravan Owners were told in person

:43:32. > :43:40.and received a newsletter saying that the age rule had been removed

:43:41. > :43:43.and, "You can keep your caravans But last year another merger led

:43:44. > :43:50.to the creation of Parkdean Resorts. And unwelcome letters from both

:43:51. > :43:53.Park Resorts and Parkdean suggested there had been a major

:43:54. > :43:57.change of policy. Over the past two years owners have

:43:58. > :43:59.been shocked to receive letters saying that the company will not be

:44:00. > :44:03.extending their contracts. And they'd either have

:44:04. > :44:05.to spend thousands to buy 74-year-old Valerie has been

:44:06. > :44:14.on the Naze Marine site in Essex since 1999 and has many happy

:44:15. > :44:28.memories with her family there. My children came

:44:29. > :44:29.there in their teens. And then my grandchildren came

:44:30. > :44:32.since they were a year old. They could run on the grass,

:44:33. > :44:35.go on the beach, on to the pier and it was family time,

:44:36. > :44:38.for all of us. And for 30 years we've always had

:44:39. > :44:44.somewhere to go for fun. But despite having received

:44:45. > :44:50.the newsletter saying she could stay on the site in her caravan

:44:51. > :44:53.as long as she wanted, she has recently been sent a letter

:44:54. > :44:56.saying she has to buy a new caravan What did it feel like

:44:57. > :45:04.when you got the letter? I was really upset because I knew

:45:05. > :45:12.I couldn't afford to upgrade and really I just thought my only

:45:13. > :45:15.option is to leave, and you're My grandchildren, two

:45:16. > :45:20.of them were in tears, because my grandsons

:45:21. > :45:22.wanted their children to be down there and have the same

:45:23. > :45:25.freedom that they'd had. What would you say to Parkdean

:45:26. > :45:31.Resorts if they were here now? I would say to them please let me

:45:32. > :45:34.stay because of all the wonderful They are getting their ground

:45:35. > :45:38.rent every year, our I feel like I can't do anything

:45:39. > :45:49.to alleviate apart from spending perhaps ?30,000 to buy a caravan,

:45:50. > :45:54.which I don't have. Unable to pay, Val is packing

:45:55. > :46:02.up her caravan and preparing to say goodbye to

:46:03. > :46:06.the site at Christmas. Lynda Alexander who has

:46:07. > :46:10.lived at the Camber Sands resorts since 2004, was also shocked

:46:11. > :46:13.to receive a letter this autumn saying that she had

:46:14. > :46:15.to leave within 90 days. Over the past two years she has

:46:16. > :46:18.invested heavily in the caravan, spending ?7,000 on decking,

:46:19. > :46:20.believing she could stay And we have heard from many more

:46:21. > :46:28.residents across the country who are shocked to hear

:46:29. > :46:31.they will have to leave too. And more concerningly,

:46:32. > :46:34.it seems even if you have a very good reason to stay,

:46:35. > :46:36.it doesn't mean Parkdean Last year Derek Hicks and his wife

:46:37. > :46:43.Maureen received a letter from Park Resorts also asking them

:46:44. > :46:46.to upgrade or leave their caravan on the Cresswell Towers

:46:47. > :46:48.site in Northumberland. We'd been on the caravan

:46:49. > :46:50.site about 19 years It was lovely, we adapted

:46:51. > :46:56.the caravan the way we wanted it. We had some lovely times,

:46:57. > :46:58.it was a great feeling Everybody spoke to you,

:46:59. > :47:03.the atmosphere was terrific. But then in the last two

:47:04. > :47:06.years Maureen got ill. Um, and she had quite

:47:07. > :47:09.a few problems, she went We had to live in the front

:47:10. > :47:19.room of our caravan, we had to sleep in the front room

:47:20. > :47:22.of our caravan, she was so bad. But there was always hope

:47:23. > :47:25.that she would get better in time. The physios were coming in,

:47:26. > :47:28.trying to get her on her feet a bit. Maureen's doctor wrote a letter

:47:29. > :47:31.stating she shouldn't be moved. But the newly-merged company,

:47:32. > :47:39.Parkdean Resorts, refused to listen. It was a begging letter, pleading,

:47:40. > :47:42.stating about the health that Maureen was in,

:47:43. > :47:44.her mam was in. I would have thought they would have

:47:45. > :47:50.looked at the situation and perhaps given us a bit extra time,

:47:51. > :47:52.and they just didn't, In the end, they were

:47:53. > :47:58.forced to leave the site. What we had to do to get

:47:59. > :48:01.Maureen out of the caravan We had to cut a hole in the side

:48:02. > :48:08.of the caravan door and we had to get a wheelchair and built a ramp

:48:09. > :48:14.and we had to wheel her down the ramp into a taxi, got her home

:48:15. > :48:18.that way and it was a lot of stress, that, then two

:48:19. > :48:24.weeks after she died. Very unhappy times and I'm really

:48:25. > :48:31.still very very raw, raw about it. So, are Parkdean Resorts allowed

:48:32. > :48:41.to do this to their residents after the previous company

:48:42. > :48:43.sent that newsletter? We asked contract law

:48:44. > :48:45.expert Christina Perry that the newsletter is admitted

:48:46. > :48:54.as what we call a side contract And the terms of this newsletter may

:48:55. > :48:59.well overturn or override the terms But, it is very much an open

:49:00. > :49:04.question and it is not something So will Parkdean's Resorts residents

:49:05. > :49:11.have to leave by new year? Or will the company

:49:12. > :49:16.have a change of heart? So, Nikki, what have Parkdean

:49:17. > :49:20.Resorts said about your report? Parkdean say they are sorry

:49:21. > :49:22.for any distress caused and has now confirmed,

:49:23. > :49:25.in writing, that all those affected The company apologises

:49:26. > :49:34.to Derek Hicks for how they dealt with his late wife,

:49:35. > :49:36.admitting it handled It has offered Val the right to stay

:49:37. > :49:43.in her caravan and is working to try to resolve Mr

:49:44. > :49:45.and Mrs Alexander's complaint. And, Nikki, you've also got

:49:46. > :50:02.some tips for anyone You are not just buying the caravan,

:50:03. > :50:08.the annual fees of being on the site and also the maintenance costs, gas,

:50:09. > :50:12.electricity. It can mount up. The contract as well, important that you

:50:13. > :50:17.look at it closely. You need to know how long you can stay on this, the

:50:18. > :50:23.minimum should be ten years. And people might want to sublet it, that

:50:24. > :50:27.may not be allowed? You might be allowed, you might not, they might

:50:28. > :50:30.sublet it for you. You must work out how much of the year you can spend

:50:31. > :50:35.in it because you can't spend the whole time that Mac. Heavenly check

:50:36. > :50:41.how long you can stay. And what if you want to sell it? Buying a

:50:42. > :50:47.caravan, wonderful as it is, is not like buying a house, it is more like

:50:48. > :50:50.buying a car, it is going to depreciate and you won't make any

:50:51. > :50:57.money. If you are selling, you may only be offered the trade price. If

:50:58. > :51:03.you sell it privately, you may not be able to or the site might take

:51:04. > :51:06.commission. You buy it for love, don't you, not money.

:51:07. > :51:09.A lot of these are going to be under the Christmas tree

:51:10. > :51:14.It's a fitness tracker you wear on your wrist that records how much

:51:15. > :51:20.But we've heard the Fitbit might not be fit for purpose,

:51:21. > :51:23.with hundreds of people saying that the strap is prone to breaking

:51:24. > :51:30.For example, Aisling Temperley bought a Fitbit Charge HR

:51:31. > :51:38.Since then the strap has peeled away and needed replacing three times.

:51:39. > :51:40.Although Fitbit has given Aisling the new straps free of charge,

:51:41. > :51:43.she's tired of having to get in touch every few

:51:44. > :51:49.So, is there a manufacturing problem with the Fitbit strap?

:51:50. > :51:57."The experiences reported are not typical and Fitbit conduct extensive

:51:58. > :52:02.testing and apply stringent standards to their products.

:52:03. > :52:05.It also says that when customers like Aisling report problems,

:52:06. > :52:07.There's more information about maintaining your

:52:08. > :52:13.And you can watch our full investigations into Fitbit straps,

:52:14. > :52:15.the Tesco Healthy Living range and Juice Plus on our

:52:16. > :52:21.Luke Hibbert and Curtis Black have been selling cars that could bring

:52:22. > :52:25.If you're lucky, they'll break down like ours did and leave

:52:26. > :52:31.But we've heard of them being dangerously unroadworthy,

:52:32. > :52:33.and, in one case, even catching fire.

:52:34. > :52:45.So, Curtis Black and Luke Hibbert sold us this car that they said

:52:46. > :52:55.But before I confront Euxton Motor Company Ltd, there's

:52:56. > :53:09.The first thing we need to do is deal with this,

:53:10. > :53:11.our 50 quid's worth of car; chances are were not

:53:12. > :53:15.going to get our money back so we need to the decent thing.

:53:16. > :53:19.Crushing our car will ensure that it doesn't end up on the road

:53:20. > :53:23.again or on the forecourt of another dodgy dealer.

:53:24. > :53:26.And it doesn't take long before it's boxed and ready for transport back

:53:27. > :53:31.to the company that flogged it to us.

:53:32. > :53:34.We reach Euxton Motor Company Ltd's premises, the place

:53:35. > :53:39.we bought our car from, and surprise, surprise,

:53:40. > :53:45.driven by Luke Hibbert and Curtis Black is still there.

:53:46. > :53:48.But our security expert told us they can be aggressive and advised

:53:49. > :53:52.I'm adamant they need to hear what we have to say.

:53:53. > :53:57.So, time to bring out the loud hailer.

:53:58. > :54:00.Luke Hibbert, Luke Hibbert, if you're on the premises come

:54:01. > :54:07.How can you sell cars to people when you claim they have

:54:08. > :54:10.got MOTs when they haven't, it means they are taking them out

:54:11. > :54:12.onto the road thinking they are safe when they are not.

:54:13. > :54:17.Just as it seems my protestations are falling on deaf ears,

:54:18. > :54:23.Curtis turns up, the man we bought our car from just days earlier.

:54:24. > :54:32.Curtis, we are returning the car you sold us for ?500.

:54:33. > :54:35.It's scrap, 50 quid, that's all it's worth it was sold to us

:54:36. > :54:38.completely un-roadworthy with no MOT it shouldn't have been on the road

:54:39. > :54:41.at all and you're doing it for other customers other customers whose cars

:54:42. > :54:44.let them down, and other customers whose cars in some cases

:54:45. > :54:50.We'd love to hear explain why you can do that, Curtis.

:54:51. > :54:53.And just as I was getting started, Curtis seeks to avoid

:54:54. > :54:56.the confrontation and backs his car out and off down the road.

:54:57. > :55:02.But I managed to speak to him on the phone a short while later.

:55:03. > :55:11.Yeah it's Matt Allwright from BBC Rogue Traders.

:55:12. > :55:18.BBC Rogue Traders, it's the country's leading motorcycle

:55:19. > :55:19.themed investigative consumer programme.

:55:20. > :55:28.You sold us a car, a VW Polo, a silver one, and it

:55:29. > :55:32.home and it would never pass its MOT and we scrapped it.

:55:33. > :55:36.And that's what you saw on the flatbed truck earlier today.

:55:37. > :55:54.So can you explain to me why you are selling motor cars

:55:55. > :55:56.which are unroadworthy and in some cases burst into flames

:55:57. > :56:00.It seems my questioning has hit a nerve and Curtis hangs up.

:56:01. > :56:03.I haven't managed to press Curtis Black or Luke Hibbert

:56:04. > :56:06.for information on the dangerous cars they're selling,

:56:07. > :56:09.but at least we've put the Polo we bought from them under pressure.

:56:10. > :56:17.That is one less car that will be driven onto the roads

:56:18. > :56:19.from either Euxton Car Sales, or Euxton Motor Company, and that

:56:20. > :56:32.In a statement to us, Luke Hibbert said he was previously

:56:33. > :56:34.employed for a short time by Euxton Motor Company, but that he

:56:35. > :56:38.He says at no point has he had any involvement

:56:39. > :56:43.He denied any allegation that he has had any knowledge of or been

:56:44. > :56:45.responsible for or complicit in misleading any of his former

:56:46. > :56:47.employer's customers, at point of sale or otherwise,

:56:48. > :56:56.However, their involvement in selling cars which have no place

:56:57. > :57:00.on the road means that they both find a place on our Rogues Gallery.
