:00:11. > :00:15.Tonight on Watchdog, Christmas is the one time of year you really want

:00:16. > :00:20.to get your TV right. Hundreds of thousands of people have signed up

:00:21. > :00:24.to Skype Others-macro all singing all dancing service, but it might

:00:25. > :00:28.not be as cute as they expect. But we actually turn on the TV, we don't

:00:29. > :00:34.know if that will work or not, it comes up as the connection failure,

:00:35. > :00:38.please wait and back and take up to 30 minutes before it actually

:00:39. > :00:43.reboots itself, you could end up missing Chris Mears bake off, a lot

:00:44. > :01:02.of very angry customers want answers and action from Sky. -- Chris Mears.

:01:03. > :01:12.Hello and welcome to the programme. Tonight, John Lewis, they pride

:01:13. > :01:15.themselves on being never knowingly undersold but not all their

:01:16. > :01:20.customers are convinced. I honestly thought that they would respond by

:01:21. > :01:24.saying thank you, it you found it cheaper, we can change our pricing

:01:25. > :01:30.to reflect this. But the response was, they were not prepared to price

:01:31. > :01:33.match. Until 2011, this was the home of the Inland Revenue, the team that

:01:34. > :01:39.used to count the pennies for the nation and tonight it is the home of

:01:40. > :01:43.Team Watchdog. The final verdict is in, how much they saved on

:01:44. > :01:53.broadband, groceries and by fixing their broken appliances? And Team

:01:54. > :01:56.Watchdog have come together for a Christmas party and we have tried to

:01:57. > :01:59.spend as little money as possible. All the food is from budget

:02:00. > :02:04.supermarkets and we will put them through a taste test. How much of

:02:05. > :02:08.these festive chocolate strung in the last? All will be revealed. At

:02:09. > :02:12.Christmas, you want to be with the ones you love but what if you have

:02:13. > :02:18.not met them yet? One solution, internet dating, I have even signed

:02:19. > :02:31.up myself to see if I could find a fantastic Mr Fox.

:02:32. > :02:35.We found out that joining one site means your profile could end up in

:02:36. > :02:38.places you never imagined it would. Tips on how to stay safe and find

:02:39. > :02:41.love this Christmas coming up in a bit. There will be someone looking

:02:42. > :02:44.to pick up a dog or puppy in time for Christmas day and in spite of

:02:45. > :02:47.messages for decades to tell us to avoid doing just that, tonight we

:02:48. > :02:49.show you that it can be hard to spot the puppy dealers you should avoid

:02:50. > :02:55.buying from. This is very sad. This little puppy is desperately afraid,

:02:56. > :02:59.it is trying to appease us by showing submissive behaviour and

:03:00. > :03:04.backing away from us. Much more on that story later. One of the most

:03:05. > :03:09.important things about Christmas day is what is on television and there

:03:10. > :03:14.is a lot to what this Team Watchdog -- tip Patrick Christmas day.

:03:15. > :03:19.Christmas university challenge. Paul O'Grady, love of dogs at Christmas.

:03:20. > :03:26.Home alone. I want to watch all of those. I want to watch four things

:03:27. > :03:31.at the same time. That is why hundreds of thousands of people have

:03:32. > :03:40.signed up to Sky's fancy new service Q.

:03:41. > :03:43.We're days away from Christmas and it's that time of year

:03:44. > :03:45.where festive films and seasonal specials fill TV schedules.

:03:46. > :03:48.But with so many channels and so much choice it can be very

:03:49. > :03:56.Especially if your family has somewhat different tastes.

:03:57. > :03:59.And this is where Sky's flagship new product Sky Q

:04:00. > :04:06.could make your Christmas all that easier.

:04:07. > :04:12.Another reason that Sky Q is hugely good, you can axis it in another

:04:13. > :04:15.room. See? It promises you can record up

:04:16. > :04:20.to four programmes at once It also allows you to watch Sky

:04:21. > :04:24.around your house and on the move. So could this be the answer to those

:04:25. > :04:27.festive telly fights? Well, not according

:04:28. > :04:33.to some Watchdog viewers. Sky Q uses one main box,

:04:34. > :04:35.connected to a satellite dish, This is then supposed to seamlessly

:04:36. > :04:42.connect to wireless miniboxes around your home, allowing you to

:04:43. > :04:45.watch up to three different channels at the same time, in different

:04:46. > :04:49.rooms. But we've heard from scores of you

:04:50. > :04:53.having problems with the service. I'm going to meet Dawn

:04:54. > :04:56.and husband Colin in Bracknell. They jumped at the chance

:04:57. > :05:08.of an upgrade to Sky Q. So you had it installed,

:05:09. > :05:11.what was the reality? It started to sort of deteriorate

:05:12. > :05:15.after a couple of weeks when you had to keep rebooting things because it

:05:16. > :05:19.would lose the signal. The picture would be there,

:05:20. > :05:22.you'd be watching the TV normally, the screen would start to freeze

:05:23. > :05:24.so you'd get a juddery picture then you'd then lose the screen

:05:25. > :05:27.altogether and it would just be a blue screen and the reboot

:05:28. > :05:30.would generally take Tried to contact Sky initially,

:05:31. > :05:37.which is another frustrating thing They've very difficult

:05:38. > :05:42.to get hold of. Eventually got hold of someone,

:05:43. > :05:45.explained the problems and by the end we've had enough

:05:46. > :05:48.and we said we wanted it removed. If you do decide to pay out

:05:49. > :05:56.for Sky Q, it's worth noting If you opt for their top package

:05:57. > :06:03.with Sky Sports and Movies it'll That's before you've even paid

:06:04. > :06:11.for broadband and a phone line. And once you factor in additional

:06:12. > :06:15.boxes and installation costs, this can all come to more

:06:16. > :06:20.than ?1,000 a year. So for all that, you would

:06:21. > :06:23.expect a premium service. But it seems that when it comes

:06:24. > :06:26.to getting your Sky Q problems sorted it seems that's

:06:27. > :06:31.not always on offer. Lee Parker contacted us, after

:06:32. > :06:34.having problems with his Sky Q. He had it installed for his family

:06:35. > :06:38.a couple of months ago and is less Basically can't do anything on it,

:06:39. > :06:46.other than watch the TV. Can't watch On Demand,

:06:47. > :06:48.can't watch your recordings, can't record, can't pause TV,

:06:49. > :06:50.can't rewind the TV, The options are there

:06:51. > :06:58.but they don't work. It's just a blank screen

:06:59. > :07:02.or an error message. Lee says that with broadband

:07:03. > :07:05.and phone line on top of his Sky Q, he's paying around

:07:06. > :07:10.?120 a month to Sky. I would expect to be a VIP member

:07:11. > :07:14.of Sky for the amount of money I'm paying every month

:07:15. > :07:17.for them, you know. I've tried getting in touch with Sky

:07:18. > :07:19.on several occasions. Then when I did finally speak

:07:20. > :07:22.to someone they said I were going to have to wait two

:07:23. > :07:25.week for an engineer to come out. With Christmas just around

:07:26. > :07:28.the corner, Lee and his family are hoping Sky can get things sorted

:07:29. > :07:32.before the big day. And the frustration of waiting

:07:33. > :07:35.for an engineer is something we're But some Watchdog viewers have

:07:36. > :07:42.also told us that even when the engineer does make it out,

:07:43. > :07:45.it doesn't mean they Richard Briggs from Liversedge

:07:46. > :07:52.in West Yorkshire emailed us after having weekly problems

:07:53. > :07:56.with his Sky Q. When we actually turn on the TV we

:07:57. > :08:00.actually don't know if it's going to work or not, it's so temperamental

:08:01. > :08:04.as a system, that it's mainly on the main TV that it comes up as a

:08:05. > :08:09.connection failure, please wait, and that can take up to 30-40 minutes

:08:10. > :08:15.before it actually reboots itself. I rang Sky up, they

:08:16. > :08:20.sent out an engineer. The engineer came out

:08:21. > :08:22.and he explained to me that the reason I wasn't actually

:08:23. > :08:24.getting a connection was down to the thickness

:08:25. > :08:28.of the walls within the property and the property's a two-bedroom

:08:29. > :08:33.cottage, not a five-bed mansion. So, is an internet

:08:34. > :08:36.problem the cause? Well, Richard has Sky

:08:37. > :08:38.broadband and says he's never The last conversation I had

:08:39. > :08:47.with the Sky operator was that there was nothing

:08:48. > :08:50.more that they could do. With Christmas approaching

:08:51. > :08:53.we will probably watch a lot more TV than we normally do and it would be

:08:54. > :08:55.really frustrating and upsetting if we can't watch

:08:56. > :09:05.the programmes that we enjoy. And our inbox has been filling up

:09:06. > :09:12.with issues relating to Sky Q. Ryan Hughes from Bristol

:09:13. > :09:15.had his box installed in July. He says he's had three engineers out

:09:16. > :09:19.since to try and Whilst Peter Molokwu

:09:20. > :09:25.from Borehamwood, says he had issues He says his screen would go blank

:09:26. > :09:30.and he'd sometimes have to restart his box up to six times

:09:31. > :09:33.a day - whilst still paying full So come on, Sky, can

:09:34. > :09:39.you get your new flagship product Or are some of your customers

:09:40. > :09:56.going to be facing a blank screen Sky told us that it has apologised

:09:57. > :10:01.to everyone in our film and is doing everything it can to fix things. It

:10:02. > :10:04.said the small percentage of Sky Q households have had problems which

:10:05. > :10:08.can be due to factors like interference with their home Wi-Fi

:10:09. > :10:13.or technical bugs which its experts are fixing as they arise with

:10:14. > :10:18.software updates or home visits. The company added that it is recruiting

:10:19. > :10:27.hundreds of additional engineers to cut waits for installations.

:10:28. > :10:32.Consumer Crusaders Team Watchdog have been enormously helpful so we

:10:33. > :10:37.have treated them to a budget Christmas dinner. Right across the

:10:38. > :10:42.series they have proved that with some small changes, you can get

:10:43. > :10:47.cheaper online groceries, cheaper energy and as Keely and Dan found

:10:48. > :10:50.out, faster broadband. You don't want to be sat in the lounge all the

:10:51. > :11:02.time, You cannot use it in here. We gave

:11:03. > :11:09.them some broadband boosting tips, but did they work? Was it 1.4 in

:11:10. > :11:17.here? Dead slow. What have we got now? 14.7 Mb. That's fantastic.

:11:18. > :11:26.Chuffed to bits. You are too, I know you are. I will go. That is an

:11:27. > :11:33.incredible ten times faster and much closer to the 17 megabits top speed

:11:34. > :11:38.advertised by their provider. So, what difference has it made? With

:11:39. > :11:43.how the new route and it means we now have the intellect connection in

:11:44. > :11:48.our new kitchen extension. As a change things? I can watch movies of

:11:49. > :11:53.the band now. Quality as much as anything else, people come to visit,

:11:54. > :11:59.lots of people using the Wi-Fi, what can they do to get the best possible

:12:00. > :12:03.broadband? Keep the route away from electrical devices, make sure you

:12:04. > :12:07.have the most up-to-date one. Check your software at the computer is

:12:08. > :12:11.up-to-date and also, if you're not getting the speed that you should

:12:12. > :12:15.be, contact the provider and have a moan and you can use our speed

:12:16. > :12:19.checker on the website to see what they should be getting. We have got

:12:20. > :12:22.a bit more work because we commissioned a special Christmas

:12:23. > :12:26.nationwide poll that found when it comes to choosing which party food

:12:27. > :12:31.to buy for friends and family at Christmas, taste and price topped

:12:32. > :12:40.the list. It is boomtime for budget supermarkets, we know that, what

:12:41. > :12:42.have we done? We put them to the taste test with our young Team

:12:43. > :12:46.Watchdog guinea pigs. Three supermarkets, Iceland, Liddell and

:12:47. > :12:52.all day and you guys did the pigs in blankets test, which one was your

:12:53. > :13:03.favourite? They were more full of herbs and spices. Shall we look at

:13:04. > :13:12.which one it is. It is Iceland at ?2 5410. Are you surprised? Let's look

:13:13. > :13:22.at the others. Underneath here is the Lidl one. It is a bit cheaper.

:13:23. > :13:26.And then Aldi. Interesting you say about herbs, they do have more herds

:13:27. > :13:34.in them, a bit of ginger and not make and more sausage and lest they

:13:35. > :13:36.can. Thank you very much, more Christmas food will be put to the

:13:37. > :13:43.test later on. Big ones, small ones,

:13:44. > :13:48.the friendly ones and even Now, because we care so much

:13:49. > :13:52.we decided to jettison the usual Rogue Traders story tonight to talk

:13:53. > :13:55.about what you should expect You should expect the breeder

:13:56. > :14:01.or seller to be properly registered and licenced by the local authority,

:14:02. > :14:03.which should mean they And if they're licenced you should

:14:04. > :14:08.feel secure in the knowledge that your puppy has been well reared

:14:09. > :14:11.and is healthy and happy. and seller called

:14:12. > :14:23.Ivy Leaf Kennels near Durham. They advertise Cavachons,

:14:24. > :14:28.Bichon Frise, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels,

:14:29. > :14:31.Lhasa Apsos and everyone's favourite, the Miniature

:14:32. > :14:34.Schnauzer for around ?400. The company promises

:14:35. > :14:41.quality pets from people Kevin Knox, the owner

:14:42. > :14:47.of the business is licensed to both But six Christmases

:14:48. > :14:55.ago he featured on BBC current affairs

:14:56. > :14:57.programme Inside Out, This was following reports

:14:58. > :15:05.of puppies bought from him illnesses or in some cases died

:15:06. > :15:09.in front of the families which had So surely, a turn in front

:15:10. > :15:14.of an audience of millions would a Lhasa Apso for her

:15:15. > :15:28.and her son Matthew and she saw one for sale

:15:29. > :15:31.on Ivy Leaf's website. Kevin Knox showed her around,

:15:32. > :15:33.and her first impression was that the kennels looked clean

:15:34. > :15:36.and professional but the dogs weren't as social as

:15:37. > :15:40.they should have been. When we did go

:15:41. > :15:43.in and view the pups, there were about seven of them

:15:44. > :15:45.hiding behind the bed. I just thought they were little

:15:46. > :15:49.babies, so they're shy. Marie is not a puppy expert,

:15:50. > :15:52.so she wasn't to know that that's Puppies should be interested

:15:53. > :15:56.in meeting new people and bounding Marie spotted two pups she liked

:15:57. > :16:03.and bought them both for ?350 each. Within 24 hours thereabouts

:16:04. > :16:12.Harry became unwell. So I immediately got

:16:13. > :16:21.in contact with the vets. And it was possibly

:16:22. > :16:22.about another week I had them back and

:16:23. > :16:27.forth to the vets. It was at that point that Harry

:16:28. > :16:41.went to the hospital Marie said he vet at the hospital

:16:42. > :16:46.was concerned because only the previous week he'd examined

:16:47. > :16:53.another puppy from Ivy Leaf Kennels that had had Parvo virus,

:16:54. > :16:56.a potentially fatal infection Concerned Marie's puppies could have

:16:57. > :17:01.caught the virus, he sent them home with anti-virals plus antibiotics

:17:02. > :17:03.for Kennel Cough. Fortunately after the medical care

:17:04. > :17:06.they received Harry and Cooper didn't go on to contract Parvo Virus

:17:07. > :17:11.and made a full recovery. The fact that they have been

:17:12. > :17:14.so poorly, has caused an awful lot of upset and stress to the point

:17:15. > :17:21.that I don't think I'll get over it. Dee Anderson also had a bad

:17:22. > :17:23.experience with a puppy She bought this Bison Frise

:17:24. > :17:29.from Kevin Knox in October Within hours Shelby started

:17:30. > :17:39.showing signs of illness. But through that night,

:17:40. > :17:43.the puppy was really really On the Monday I took Shelby

:17:44. > :17:50.to the vets and they said we'll have to give you two lots of different

:17:51. > :17:53.medications for Kennel Cough, and they said that his little

:17:54. > :17:56.digestive system wasn't good. But over the next 17 days

:17:57. > :17:59.Shelby's condition worsened, despite being prescribed with more

:18:00. > :18:07.antibiotics and steroids. By then Shelby was on a drip

:18:08. > :18:10.and they had gave Shelby an x-ray. The x-ray showed that

:18:11. > :18:14.Shelby had pneumonia. And that's when they've said,

:18:15. > :18:19.you know, he won't make it. He didn't deserve that,

:18:20. > :18:26.the poor little pup. And I promised him that

:18:27. > :18:36.I would look after him. I would absolutely wholeheartedly

:18:37. > :18:40.say never, don't ever go to that kennel and buy a puppy

:18:41. > :18:47.because it's not good. You know, them pups don't deserve

:18:48. > :18:51.to be not looked after properly. And then sold on just

:18:52. > :18:54.for his to build his bank balance. And the sad thing is that we could

:18:55. > :19:04.have had our pick of Ivy Leaf customers who have seen dogs either

:19:05. > :19:07.die, or if they are lucky, scrape through serious illness

:19:08. > :19:09.in the days immediately following a purchase

:19:10. > :19:14.from Kevin Knox. Since the Inside Out piece in 2010,

:19:15. > :19:17.we know of at least 52 serious illnesses,

:19:18. > :19:18.and 11 deaths. Of course, we can only talk

:19:19. > :19:21.about the dogs we know about. It's hinting at an operation

:19:22. > :19:26.where things are seriously wrong. Now let's find out if Kevin Knox

:19:27. > :19:29.is doing everything he can, to make sure the dogs

:19:30. > :19:32.he sells, don't get sick. And whether he really does offer

:19:33. > :19:39.the quality pets that he promises. Yes, a licensed breeder who sells

:19:40. > :19:42.dogs whose chances of survival seem Lessons to be learnt in what to look

:19:43. > :20:02.for when you a puppy in ten. Next tonight, Internet dating.

:20:03. > :20:10.Millions if you are signed up and you have been telling us about the

:20:11. > :20:15.bad experiences you have had. Nikki you have even signed up. Yes, my

:20:16. > :20:16.profile started popping up on sites for people with interests I

:20:17. > :20:20.definitely did not share. Yeah, sorry, I don't think this

:20:21. > :20:36.is going to work out. Which is why internet dating

:20:37. > :20:39.should make things easier. A seemingly great way

:20:40. > :20:41.to narrow the field, and meet likeminded people looking

:20:42. > :20:46.for the same thing. And you might think one sure-fire

:20:47. > :20:49.way to meet someone you get on with would be to join one

:20:50. > :20:52.of the more targeted sites - for things like hobbies,

:20:53. > :20:55.jobs or interests. After all, these are supposed

:20:56. > :20:58.to match likeminded people. When you sign up to one of these

:20:59. > :21:06.sites you might not realise that you could then pop up on a site

:21:07. > :21:09.for those with very One big company will often run

:21:10. > :21:19.lots of different dating sites. When you sign up to one of these

:21:20. > :21:22.sites your profile could then end up on several others,

:21:23. > :21:24.because the big company We wanted to test

:21:25. > :21:29.this for ourselves. So the team signed me up to a site

:21:30. > :21:33.called Something Serious UK, It says it's a site for people

:21:34. > :21:40.looking for romance and it's run by international company,

:21:41. > :21:43.Venntro. My team of cupids ticked a few vague

:21:44. > :21:46.interests like "sport" And soon after, my profile started

:21:47. > :21:53.appearing on sites I hadn't signed Playing video games

:21:54. > :22:10.really isn't for me. I even ended up on a site called

:22:11. > :22:14.Football Lover Dating. And I have no clue

:22:15. > :22:24.about the offside rule. This could make for a very

:22:25. > :22:27.awkward date, and a huge disappointment for the person

:22:28. > :22:29.who found me on there. Buried deep in the Terms

:22:30. > :22:31.and Conditions it says they might But, nowhere does it say

:22:32. > :22:36.which ones I've been put on, or on what site someone

:22:37. > :22:53.has found me. Venntro said its database brings

:22:54. > :22:56.together like-minded people and it regularly receives success stories

:31:21. > :31:27.and the litters of puppies We know Kevin is a licenced breeder

:31:28. > :31:33.but he also has a pet-shop licence, We breed some ourselves

:31:59. > :32:00.should also be concerned This is their area, they're sort

:32:01. > :32:09.of restricted in til ten weeks. I go in every day and clean them

:32:10. > :32:12.out on a regular basis. These have all been cleared out

:32:21. > :32:27.And what happens if we're worried You have 72 hours to get

:32:56. > :32:57.a present for his wife, Simon asks to see one

:32:58. > :33:03.of them up close. How quickly can

:33:04. > :33:08.we get a beagle then? I mean it's there to go now,

:33:09. > :33:15.if you want to take it now, it's fine but it isn't microchipped

:33:16. > :33:18.because we've run out I'm getting some delivered today

:33:19. > :33:28.that should be here by dinner time, but I can't guarantee that.

:33:29. > :33:31.We are asking to take the puppy away now but it's actually a breach

:33:32. > :33:34.of regulations for Kevin to sell us a dog before it's been microchipped

:33:35. > :33:37.if it's older than eight weeks, rules he's already made clear

:33:40. > :33:42.is between eight and nine weeks old but is happy for us

:33:43. > :33:46.to take him away. Remember - when you're buying

:33:47. > :33:49.a puppy, the seller should ask as many questions

:33:50. > :33:51.about you as you do about the dog. But having made no background

:33:52. > :33:54.checks on us at all, and with no microchip in place Kevin

:33:55. > :33:59.nonchalantly gives us the green Having made our choice we follow

:34:00. > :34:07.Kevin Knox back in to go This is the pup's pedigree

:34:08. > :34:19.and registration document. The registration certificate doesn't

:34:20. > :34:21.tell us anything about who bred Time to get this little

:34:22. > :34:26.pup checked over. We decide to call our

:34:27. > :34:34.new puppy Beasley. Wanting to check him out

:34:35. > :34:37.straightaway, vet Simon Thomas takes Beasley direct to a local vet

:34:38. > :34:40.practice, and finds he has conjunctivitis and an inherited

:34:41. > :34:42.defect with his teeth Physically Beasley is in relatively

:34:43. > :34:51.good health, but Simon is more concerned about the mental wellbeing

:34:52. > :34:54.of Beasley and all the other dogs. What was terribly lacking for these

:34:55. > :34:57.puppies was any evidence of socialisation or social

:34:58. > :35:00.interaction, their whole world was a tiny sawdust pen

:35:01. > :35:04.an occasional visit from him, a plastic bed and

:35:05. > :35:09.that was their lot. Simon doubts the puppies are used

:35:10. > :35:11.to people or the sounds So Beasley's next stop

:35:12. > :35:17.was Pet Behaviourist Carrie Evans. He's happy to investigate

:35:18. > :35:19.which is good, that's nice, but he doesn't

:35:20. > :35:24.want to engage with me. Hello, shall we just say hello

:35:25. > :35:27.to each other first? This to me is I'm not

:35:28. > :35:32.happy being held. So that would indicate he's not

:35:33. > :35:35.had very much social Once a puppy reaches 12 weeks

:35:36. > :35:39.old, its behavioural But Beasley is young,

:35:40. > :35:45.and after a few hours in Carrie's company,

:35:46. > :35:51.he's starting to get used to human With this little man,

:35:52. > :35:55.we've caught him early enough. We've got a lot of time to work

:35:56. > :35:59.on him and correct some of the things that have gone wrong

:36:00. > :36:01.in his life already. If we were going for an older puppy,

:36:02. > :36:05.of 12 weeks plus, we probably would have mistakes for the rest

:36:06. > :36:08.of our lives. There is a more worrying example

:36:09. > :36:11.of a poorly socialised puppy Posted by Kevin Knox it

:36:12. > :36:17.shows a cocker spaniel This is very sad, this little puppy

:36:18. > :36:24.is desperately afraid, it is trying to appease us

:36:25. > :36:29.by showing submissive behaviour and backing away from us,

:36:30. > :36:34.because it is just terrified of this experience of a human approaching

:36:35. > :36:37.it, and that really is a clear symbol of a puppy that has

:36:38. > :36:44.not been socialised. After visiting Ivy Leaf Kennels

:36:45. > :36:46.Simon Thomas was concerned about Kevin Knox's care

:36:47. > :36:50.of the puppies that remain there. I worried about the welfare

:36:51. > :36:58.of all of these puppies. They were just seemed to be

:36:59. > :37:01.a commodity to him. Beasley and many of his pals

:37:02. > :37:03.in Ivy Leaf Kennels But the kennels look clean,

:37:04. > :37:10.and Kevin is a licensed dealer So why have so many other puppies

:37:11. > :37:13.got sick or died shortly And what do you need to know

:37:14. > :37:27.if you go to a breeder or puppy Tonight Team Watchdog are here

:37:28. > :37:31.having a Christmas party and throughout the show we are catching

:37:32. > :37:38.up with them to remind all of us how to get better value for money. This

:37:39. > :37:44.time, it is the turn of newly savvy shoppers Sharon and Malley. I've

:37:50. > :37:54.save them money. Are you going to look at the price of the pack? No, I

:37:55. > :38:00.don't usually. Is this like a family thing, that you go shopping

:38:01. > :38:07.together? I do it every now and again and I find that I spend more.

:38:08. > :38:14.Do you sneak in traits. Those apples look lovely. Are they on your list?

:38:15. > :38:26.No. Get them out then! What is the total? ?61. Thank you very much. We

:38:27. > :38:33.also asked Shannon to try online shopping for the same order and it

:38:34. > :38:40.came in at ?70. That is more expensive than her in-store shop. By

:38:41. > :38:47.following all of our tips, Shannon could have got her shopping for ?52.

:38:48. > :38:55.If she did this every week, that could give her a saving of more than

:38:56. > :39:02.?900 across the year. Malia and Shannon join us now along with

:39:03. > :39:07.Steph. What is the one thing that you buy now regularly were you make

:39:08. > :39:11.regular savings? Baked beans. I have changed the way I buy baked beans.

:39:12. > :39:16.That's a joy for everyone else! What advice did you give them to make

:39:17. > :39:20.sure that the bills were cheaper. It is like comparing prices, don't just

:39:21. > :39:25.go for what you think looks cheapest, compare the unit price,

:39:26. > :39:29.look at sizes as well, bigger packs are not always cheaper and if you're

:39:30. > :39:34.buying online, look at the different delivery slots because they can vary

:39:35. > :39:39.in price. We have pitted the budget supermarkets against each other,

:39:55. > :40:03.meant fluid in your mouth. Let's look at what it is. It is Iceland.

:40:04. > :40:12.You mentioned fruitiness. That one has more mincemeat in. Let's look at

:40:13. > :40:17.the others. Aldi. And C, that was Lidl. Are you surprised? Yes. You

:40:18. > :40:33.like them, that is the main thing. Sophie, how is the Christmas

:40:34. > :40:37.shopping going? It is almost done. After a mad panic this morning. It

:40:38. > :40:41.is stressful, but retailers try to make it easier by giving you a price

:40:42. > :40:45.matching promise, meaning that you do not have to trek around every

:40:46. > :40:48.single shop and one of the most trusted claims comes from Jon Lewis

:40:49. > :40:55.who say that they are never knowingly undersold. It's not always

:40:56. > :40:59.quite that simple. John Lewis claims to have guests everyone will love,

:41:00. > :41:04.including the star of its Christmas ad, Buster the boxer dog, but when

:41:05. > :41:11.it comes to pricing, not all its customers are jumping for joy.

:41:12. > :41:14.It's all down to John Lewis' pledge to be Never Knowingly Undersold.

:41:15. > :41:16.It says it has a "dedicated price-monitoring

:41:22. > :41:26.John Lewis says it doesn't "expect you to find a lower

:41:27. > :41:31.price elsewhere" but, if you do, you can request a price match.

:41:32. > :41:35.Well, not according to Alistair Freegard, from West Yorkshire.

:41:36. > :41:38.When he was after some Christmas presents on Black Friday,

:41:39. > :41:41.he was sure John Lewis would give him the best possible deal.

:41:42. > :41:43.After all, right underneath the product he wanted

:41:44. > :41:47.was its promise to Never Knowingly be Undersold - even during sales.

:41:48. > :41:50.I guess I do trust John Lewis because of their Never Knowingly

:41:51. > :41:53.Undersold - that I do believe that they've gone out, found the best

:41:54. > :42:01.prices and of course are giving that to the consumer - me.

:42:02. > :42:03.But Alistair spotted that the iPod was available

:42:04. > :42:11.So he immediately requested a price match from John Lewis.

:42:12. > :42:14.It took John Lewis 12 hours to respond to Alistair -

:42:15. > :42:19.and to his amazement - his price match was refused.

:42:20. > :42:23.When I got the response from John Lewis I was a little bit surprised.

:42:24. > :42:25.I honestly thought that they would probably respond by saying: "Thank

:42:26. > :42:31.What we can now do is change our website, change our pricing

:42:32. > :42:36.However, the response actually was because Currys now had sold out

:42:37. > :42:39.they weren't prepared to price match.

:42:40. > :42:45.I think my frustration with the John Lewis response

:42:46. > :42:49.was that if somebody had been selling that product cheaper

:42:50. > :42:56.John Lewis almost ought to kick themselves and say they messed up.

:42:57. > :43:00.In practice, then, it seems that on one of the most competitive

:43:01. > :43:03.shopping days of the year - John Lewis hadn't made sure

:43:04. > :43:06.it was matching the price of one of its biggest electronics

:43:07. > :43:11.And even when it was told about it, refused to price match.

:43:12. > :43:14.But at least when John Lewis is told one of its products cheaper

:43:15. > :43:17.elsewhere - and in stock - it adjusts its price accordingly

:43:18. > :43:20.to make sure it is not "Knowingly Undersold".

:43:21. > :43:26.Not so says David Rawle, from London.

:43:27. > :43:29.Back in January he noticed that a pair of headphones advertised

:43:30. > :43:33.in John Lewis were ?16 cheaper in Richer Sounds.

:43:34. > :43:38.So now they knew they were undersold.

:43:39. > :43:40.But did they change their price in store?

:43:41. > :43:51.I thought if they found something cheaper somewhere else they should

:43:52. > :43:54.The reason why John Lewis only lowered the price for David can be

:43:55. > :43:58.In David's case, John Lewis claimed Richer Sounds did not

:43:59. > :44:01.meet their strict criteria of a national "high street

:44:02. > :44:04.competitor" because its prices can differ across its shops and website.

:44:05. > :44:08.I called a few Richer Sounds to find out if their prices were different.

:44:09. > :44:11.And every single store that I tried were ?74.

:44:12. > :44:14.I understand that John Lewis can't check thousands of retailers

:44:15. > :44:17.so they only can have the slogan Never Knowingly Undersold

:44:18. > :44:24.And they knew about it for quite a long time

:44:25. > :44:32.So when it comes to those last minute gifts - rely too heavily

:45:12. > :45:15.products every day and will redouble its efforts to make its pricing

:45:16. > :45:21.policy even clearer. Now, Steph, what other stories have

:45:22. > :45:28.the team being looked into this week? We have had loads of messages

:45:29. > :45:32.on Twitter. Lots of people talking about delivery is going wrong so

:45:33. > :45:37.let's have a look at some of them. One of them is Michaela. This is a

:45:38. > :45:48.bit of a shocker of a story. Michaela ordered a picture frame and

:45:49. > :45:50.some kids paints to make prints of her baby's feat as Christmas

:45:51. > :45:52.presents for the family. That is a lovely picture there. She bought

:45:53. > :45:55.them from Amazon but rather than deliver them to her front door, she

:45:56. > :46:03.came home to find the parcel spread across the garden and this is why.

:46:04. > :46:09.Can you believe that? Let's have a look in slow motion. The delivery

:46:10. > :46:15.person has clearly just lobbed it in the garden, nearly hitting the cat.

:46:16. > :46:19.Thankfully, the cat is all right. Michaela did complain to Amazon who

:46:20. > :46:23.replaced the paints and gave her free next day delivery on a future

:46:24. > :46:29.order. We got in touch with Amazon who said it investigated and ensured

:46:30. > :46:34.the independent delivery provider resolved the issue to the customer's

:46:35. > :46:38.satisfaction. The good news is Michaela and Leighton managed to

:46:39. > :46:45.make their picture for their family as well.

:46:46. > :46:58.Next up, another story from Michelle. She contacted us after she

:46:59. > :47:05.bought to Hatchimals items from Argos. Sooner is Michelle paid ?120

:47:06. > :47:08.for the two toys, she got an e-mail from Argos saying they were out of

:47:09. > :47:12.stock. She was told she would get her money back straightaway but she

:47:13. > :47:18.did not. Michelle complained to Argos and they offered her the

:47:19. > :47:22.chance to buy two more at a discount but she did not want to pay any more

:47:23. > :47:27.money until she got the original ?120 back. We got in touch with

:47:28. > :47:31.Argos who said a technical error meant and out of stock item was

:47:32. > :47:38.displayed as available. It said it was rare and they got in touch with

:47:39. > :47:45.Michelle and are racist link to refund -- they got in touch with

:47:46. > :47:54.Michelle and our processing her refund. They also sent two more

:47:55. > :48:02.Hatchimals. Now I have to do this. Contact us through Facebook, BBC

:48:03. > :48:14.Watchdog and Twitter and have a cracking Christmas.

:48:15. > :48:22.Back to our investigation of what to look for if you are buying a puppy.

:48:23. > :48:26.Kevin Knox of County Durham appears to be running a credible operation.

:48:27. > :48:31.His premises look clean and he seems to know his stuff. But we have found

:48:32. > :48:35.many dogs are afraid of people and we have not got to the bottom of why

:48:36. > :48:41.so many animals are sick and dying, yet.

:48:42. > :48:44.In the last six years we know of 52 dogs that suffered serious illness

:48:45. > :48:47.and 11 that died soon after leaving Ivy Leaf kennels.

:48:48. > :48:49.The kennels have appeared in the press many times.

:48:50. > :48:51.And all the stories tell a similar tale.

:48:52. > :48:56.After all, the first impression is of a clean

:48:57. > :48:59.Expert vet Simon Thomas, who came with us to buy Beasley,

:49:00. > :49:03.There was no facilities to clean our hands on arrival,

:49:04. > :49:06.no questions about where we might have been, so those were things

:49:07. > :49:11.And there are more clues of the source of the problems

:49:12. > :49:13.from videos of puppies for sale that Kevin Knox

:49:14. > :49:18.This is a video of a litter of cavachon puppies

:49:19. > :49:23.These puppies are around eight weeks old, yet Kevin had assured us

:49:24. > :49:26.when we visited that all puppy litters were kept separate in their

:49:27. > :49:33.These very young puppies will then be susceptible to germs that they've

:49:34. > :49:38.never met and that's when you get an increased risk of disease.

:49:39. > :49:40.This video shows some cocker spaniel puppies playing in the yard

:49:41. > :49:51.But it's rough ground, next to a sewage pipe, and some broken paving.

:49:52. > :49:55.It really is not going to be possible to properly disinfect

:49:56. > :50:01.an area like that between groups of puppies and even the concrete I'd

:50:02. > :50:04.And if you've got a carry over of germs between one group

:50:05. > :50:07.of puppies and another that comes in, the germs will just

:50:08. > :50:11.Germs that could include as roundworm, the parasite giardia,

:50:12. > :50:13.and the bacteria Campylobacta which causes food poisoning

:50:14. > :50:22.They would also be at risk from parvo virus if any

:50:23. > :50:26.I mean, parvo virus is highly infectious so that would also

:50:27. > :50:39.We know of seven dogs that have left Ivy Leaf Kennels with parvo virus,

:50:40. > :50:44.So we have seen examples of poor care which could explain the high

:50:45. > :50:47.levels of sickness and death in puppies bought from Kevin Knox.

:50:48. > :50:53.Instances of infection probably can never be completely ruled out

:50:54. > :50:55.but they should be very rare and it should be avoidable.

:50:56. > :51:00.There are many things Kevin Knox could be doing to prevent this

:51:01. > :51:02.spread of infection and improve the wellbeing of these puppies

:51:03. > :51:07.So, we wrote to him, suggesting where he was going wrong.

:51:08. > :51:13."Kevin Knox refutes the allegation that the puppies are badly

:51:14. > :51:18.socialized and fearful around humans.

:51:19. > :51:21.Really? Kevin Knox also refutes the suggestion that he does nothing

:51:22. > :51:24.to prevent the spread of infectious diseases,

:51:25. > :51:27.and whilst he may possibly accept that a very small proportion

:51:28. > :51:31.of his yard might be susceptible to contamination, he doesn't accept

:51:32. > :51:35.that the area is a health risk to the dogs.

:51:36. > :51:46.Kevin Knox says he's going to repair the broken area.

:51:47. > :51:48.And that he's now going to provide soft bedding and toys.

:51:49. > :52:05.But he refutes our allegation that he has repeatedly sold

:52:06. > :52:07.So, over the last six years, selling 52 puppies that

:52:08. > :52:11.and 11 that have died shortly after leaving his care over

:52:12. > :52:13.six years is not repeatedly selling sick or dying puppies?

:52:14. > :52:21.But there's one line here that I'm struggling with.

:52:22. > :52:23."Our client accepts sometimes puppies die."

:52:24. > :52:26.Well, we don't accept that and we don't think you accept that

:52:27. > :52:30.to Kevin Knox's house to remind him what time of year it is.

:52:31. > :52:44.It's the busiest time of year for the puppy trade.

:52:45. > :52:55.This is much better. This is what you want.

:52:56. > :53:04.It's looking nice. Looking Christmassy. Never used to be able

:53:05. > :53:16.to get these. They are amazing. They make a real splash. Come on!

:53:17. > :53:20.We wish you a Merry Christmas and a puppy New Year. Merry Christmas!

:53:21. > :53:24.Merry Christmas. Well done. Seriously,

:53:25. > :53:42.don't be part of the puppy Kevin Knox told us the premises were

:53:43. > :53:47.inspected every year and a great deal of care was taken regarding

:53:48. > :53:53.hygiene and sanitation, the pens were regularly power washed and

:53:54. > :53:59.rinsed with a DEFRA improved disinfected. The allegations that

:54:00. > :54:02.yuppies were fearful around humans was refuted. Everything is done to

:54:03. > :54:07.ensure poppies were handled and socialised as much as possible

:54:08. > :54:15.within the confines of the kennel -- the puppies. Kevin Thomas said if

:54:16. > :54:21.you want to buy a puppy, the message is simple, by a puppy aged over

:54:22. > :54:28.eight weeks, see the puppy with its mum, buy from a registered dealer

:54:29. > :54:32.and if you're not happy walk away. There are plenty of dogs in rescue

:54:33. > :54:36.centres looking for good homes. They will have been checked by a vet

:54:37. > :54:44.before coming to you and there is even more advice on our website.

:54:45. > :54:48.Earlier in the series the Patel family told of their love of fixing

:54:49. > :54:55.household appliances instead of throwing them away. How often do you

:54:56. > :55:01.fix things? Every week. It is how we are brought up to repair things, not

:55:02. > :55:07.throw them away. You gave us some great fixing tips, remind us what

:55:08. > :55:11.they were. One of them was to always keep the manuals and if you have

:55:12. > :55:16.lost it have a look online. Keep the warranties. If it is coming to the

:55:17. > :55:20.end of the warranty, maybe you can get an extended warranty or

:55:21. > :55:23.sometimes free parts are offered by the manufacturer. And most

:55:24. > :55:28.importantly, maintaining the appliances. Always follow the

:55:29. > :55:33.manufacturer's recommended guidelines. Time for another taste

:55:34. > :55:39.test. Christmas is not complete without the Christmas pudding. Which

:55:40. > :55:48.one is best? You guys love Christmas pudding? Which one did you go for?

:55:49. > :55:53.We both went for B. The flavour was great, great spices. Funnily enough

:55:54. > :55:57.there was less sugar. You felt it was not as sweet as the others?

:55:58. > :56:09.Let's have a look at which one it was. So it was the Lidl on. It is

:56:10. > :56:13.75p per portion for that one. You said it was not a sweet but that was

:56:14. > :56:21.not the one with the least sugar in which is interesting. Let's have a

:56:22. > :56:27.look at the others. We have Aldi which is 87 pence a portion and then

:56:28. > :56:33.Iceland which is ?1 portion so you went to the one in the middle. Thank

:56:34. > :56:39.you both very much and thank you to all of team Watchdog for their help

:56:40. > :56:42.in this series. If you want to join Team Watchdog then the details are

:56:43. > :56:56.on our website. Last week on Rogue Traders we

:56:57. > :57:03.investigated Euxton and the -- we would like to make clear that the

:57:04. > :57:07.people featured are not related to Exton car sales which has no

:57:08. > :57:11.association and has never had any association with Euxton motor can be

:57:12. > :57:19.limited and with Luke Hibbard and Curtis Black.

:57:20. > :57:24.That is it for this year. Do keep sending your stories and tip-off is.

:57:41. > :58:07.Enjoy the festivities. Goodbye. Relying on Josh to get this right.

:58:08. > :58:10.Watch and learn. OK, here we go. Anyone have a clue?

:58:11. > :58:16...a funny dance? No, no dancing.
