:00:20. > :00:24.families in mid-Wales. Now they could be getting a shock from their
:00:24. > :00:34.insurance company. And Harveys, the furniture store, blames a
:00:34. > :00:48.
:00:48. > :00:52.customer's heat oil for this damage. Hello, tonight we're in Aberystwyth.
:00:52. > :00:55.These sun is shining. We had better make the most of it. And later on
:00:55. > :00:58.we're also going to be hearing more about damp of a different kind.
:00:58. > :01:02.Damp caused by cavity wall insulation. Lots of you have been
:01:02. > :01:04.in touch since we investigated the issue a few weeks ago. More on that
:01:04. > :01:07.later. But first, a company that we've featured before on X-Ray.
:01:07. > :01:10.It's a company which enjoy the backing of millionaire boxing
:01:10. > :01:18.champion Joe Calzaghe. But it's also a company which got one boxing
:01:19. > :01:24.mad pensioner deep into debt. They say they'll fight your corner
:01:24. > :01:29.to reclaim your payment protection insurance, or PPI. And they've got
:01:29. > :01:34.friends in high places. Boxing legend Joe Calzaghe is the public
:01:34. > :01:36.face of We Fight Any Claim. With a successful sportsman fronting their
:01:36. > :01:46.campaigns, the Cwmbran based company certainly seems to be
:01:46. > :01:48.
:01:48. > :01:54.punching above its weight. Their adverts are all over the radio.
:01:54. > :01:57.Fight Any Claim we claims thousands of pounds of Miss sold pp I...
:01:57. > :02:00.their customer service won't win any prizes. Back in March, we met
:02:00. > :02:05.two customers who'd paid huge up- front fees to the company even
:02:05. > :02:13.though they were sure they'd never had PPI! Yvonne Westmacott paid
:02:13. > :02:18.�2,800. Ceri Evans paid �700 in upfront fees. But 18 months on,
:02:18. > :02:21.there was no sign of a payout. We got their money back for them. It
:02:21. > :02:26.turned out We Fight Any Claims was part of a controversial group of
:02:26. > :02:29.companies. The man in charge, Simon Chorlton, also ran Yes Loans, until
:02:29. > :02:35.the Office of Fair Trading closed it down for deceitful and
:02:35. > :02:41.oppressive business practices. Now we've had more complaints from
:02:41. > :02:51.customers of We Fight Any Claim. But one case shocked us more than
:02:51. > :02:57.The case of Brian Beese. As a young man, Brian was a keen boxer and
:02:57. > :03:05.followed the sport throughout his life, as son Bill recalls. He was
:03:05. > :03:12.quite competitive with his amateur boxing, had a couple of fights. One
:03:12. > :03:17.time, he actually fought for the Welsh Boxing Amateur Association.
:03:17. > :03:21.Good grief. So what was it that he did? He started as a mechanic in
:03:21. > :03:26.the mines and went on to become a toolmaker and in around 1980 he
:03:26. > :03:31.retired through ill health. March this year, aged 70, Brian
:03:31. > :03:38.passed away. Only then did son Bill begin to uncover the sad truth
:03:38. > :03:41.about his father's dealings with We Fight Any Claim. At the end of 2010,
:03:41. > :03:49.We Fight Any Claim cold-called Brian, telling him he could get
:03:49. > :03:58.almost �17,000 back for mis-sold PPI. But there was a catch - he'd
:03:58. > :04:03.have to pay 30% of this upfront. How much did he pay to them?
:04:03. > :04:13.think it was just under �5,600. Gosh, that's a huge amount of money,
:04:13. > :04:22.
:04:22. > :04:25.isn't it? Had no disposable income and the only way he could get it is
:04:25. > :04:29.through Caddick cards, and he thought you did for his
:04:29. > :04:32.grandchildren. With his boxing hero Joe Calzaghe fronting the show,
:04:32. > :04:35.Brian went for the company's sales patter. But Brian didn't have the
:04:35. > :04:39.money to pay the huge upfront fee. So We Fight Any Claim persuaded the
:04:39. > :04:43.pensioner to go into debt, using his credit card. Months went by
:04:43. > :04:53.with no sign of a payout. And the interest on Brian's card was
:04:53. > :04:55.
:04:55. > :05:00.mounting. I feel really angry. My father is paying roughly 150-�200
:05:00. > :05:05.per month out of his state pension, but what was happening then,
:05:05. > :05:15.because of the spiralling debt problem, he would then go down at
:05:15. > :05:17.
:05:17. > :05:21.the credit card, so he was never reducing his dead. -- his debt.
:05:21. > :05:24.Last December, a whole year after he paid his fee, We Fight Any Claim
:05:24. > :05:28.admitted there was no PPI on one of Brian's credit cards. They refunded
:05:28. > :05:32.�1,600 but still had almost �4,000 of his money. He certainly would
:05:32. > :05:36.have been stressed out about it because he was never a person to be
:05:36. > :05:42.in debt. Do you think your dad was actually chasing them to find out
:05:42. > :05:45.where this money was? I think it was on a weekly basis he was
:05:45. > :05:50.phoning them and asking them to account for the money and where it
:05:50. > :05:57.was. With the stress and high blood pressure, it could have been a
:05:57. > :06:02.contributory factor to the illness he suffered when he passed away.
:06:02. > :06:07.Over the last few months, Bill has been struggling to sort out his
:06:07. > :06:12.father's finances. I have been trying to work out what has been
:06:12. > :06:16.going on with this company. And to try to work out something and see
:06:16. > :06:20.what has gone on. We contacted the company, in an effort to track down
:06:20. > :06:27.Brian's money. We Fight Any Claim say that two of Brian's claims have
:06:27. > :06:34.been successful. One for �430 and one for just �20. Hardly the
:06:34. > :06:40.�17,000 they predicted. But in the circumstances, they have agreed to
:06:40. > :06:48.refund the rest of Brian's money, almost �4,000. How do you feel now
:06:48. > :06:53.then about everything that's happened? Does very much is a
:06:53. > :06:59.bittersweet experience for myself. Pesch This is remote. It is nice to
:06:59. > :07:03.have my father's money back, but I've also reform my father. I want
:07:03. > :07:08.to make people aware of how vicious these people are and what they will
:07:08. > :07:11.do to get your money. That's such a sad story. It is. But,
:07:11. > :07:13.thankfully, we managed to get them their money back. We also
:07:13. > :07:17.understand that the company no longer take upfront fees from
:07:17. > :07:20.customers. But Joe Calzaghe's been less forthcoming. Despite our best
:07:20. > :07:25.efforts to contact him, he has been very reluctant to answer our
:07:25. > :07:29.questions. We did speak to his father and former trainer, Enzo,
:07:29. > :07:32.who confirmed that Joe is paid to endorse the company. But has never
:07:33. > :07:38.looked into their business practices. And it doesn't sound

:08:37. > :08:47.Hang on, Topps Tiles, shouldn't that mean they sell top tiles with
:08:47. > :08:54.a top class service? Hmm, let's see. Hi, Gill. Lovely to see you. Your
:08:54. > :08:59.cottage is absolutely gorgeous. So, Gill, why did you decide that you
:08:59. > :09:03.wanted a new floor? Because we had had carpet down and changed it two
:09:03. > :09:05.or three times but with the dogs in and out all the time and
:09:05. > :09:09.continually getting covered in hairs, I just wanted something that
:09:09. > :09:13.was going to be easy to clean. Something that was going to be
:09:13. > :09:16.permanent. And you went to Topps Tiles? Yes. Simply because they
:09:16. > :09:22.have quite a large store quite close to us, so it was convenient
:09:22. > :09:26.to go to Flint. And did you tell the sales staff where the tiles
:09:26. > :09:30.would be laid? Yes, I explained to them that it was going to be quite
:09:30. > :09:33.a high traffic area anyway. And what did they say about that? No
:09:33. > :09:38.problem. Didn't mention that they were only suitable for low traffic
:09:38. > :09:43.areas. So, you left there very happy with your purchase? Yes,
:09:43. > :09:46.absolutely. So what went happened? Well, we were delighted when we put
:09:46. > :09:49.them down. They looked lovely for about two months and then little
:09:49. > :09:53.holes started appearing in them, just in particular where we walked.
:09:53. > :09:58.And so did you get back in touch with Topps Tiles? I did, I went
:09:58. > :10:06.back to complain to them. And when I spoke to the salesperson there,
:10:06. > :10:10.his first words were, "Oh, yes, they are inclined to pit." And I
:10:10. > :10:13.said nobody mentioned it to us. And he said, well, there's a notice on
:10:13. > :10:17.them saying honed and filled. didn't even see the notice but it
:10:17. > :10:20.wouldn't have meant anything to me anyway. It didn't explain anything.
:10:20. > :10:25.After Gill and her husband Steve complained, Topps Tiles sent out a
:10:25. > :10:28.tradesman to fill the holes and get them back to their former glory.
:10:28. > :10:33.But two months later they were writing to the company again after
:10:33. > :10:38.the filler turned an unsightly black. So this is the flooring
:10:38. > :10:42.then? Yes, just there really is one of the worst ones. Let me have a
:10:42. > :10:46.look at that. So this is the pitting you have been talking
:10:46. > :10:50.about? That's right. And some of them are really quite deep. Oh, yes,
:10:50. > :10:53.you can feel them. And they are very visible, aren't they, too? And
:10:53. > :10:56.this isn't how it should look at all. No, well if you lift the
:10:56. > :11:02.carpet, this is where the dogs lie, underneath where it has been
:11:02. > :11:07.covered is absolutely fine. Gill, what would you like me to try
:11:07. > :11:11.and do? I'd love you to get me some new tiles. I'm on the case! Now,
:11:11. > :11:15.here's a good tip for you. According to the law, anything you
:11:15. > :11:20.buy from a shop must be fit for purpose. So, basically, it should
:11:20. > :11:25.do the job it's described to do. Gill says she made it very clear to
:11:25. > :11:29.Topps Tiles she needed a floor that could withstand a lot of walking.
:11:29. > :11:31.So we got in touch with the company who told us they think Gill was
:11:31. > :11:34.sold the right tiles but they needed regular maintenance to keep
:11:34. > :11:40.them looking good and a leaflet telling customers this was
:11:40. > :11:42.displayed in the shop. But Topps Tiles admits that Gill was given
:11:43. > :11:52.poor customer service and in the spirit of good will, they're
:11:53. > :11:55.
:11:55. > :12:01.prepared to replace the tiles free of charge. Thanks. Topps Tiles are
:12:01. > :12:06.going to replace all that whilst completely. And that is another
:12:06. > :12:09.case closed. Another great result. Hopefully,
:12:09. > :12:12.Gill's floor will soon be looking as good as new. Now, a few weeks
:12:12. > :12:14.ago we carried out a major undercover investigation into the
:12:14. > :12:17.way cavity wall insulation companies operate in Wales. Yes, we
:12:17. > :12:24.wanted to know what kind of advice the insulation companies would give
:12:24. > :12:27.us when we invited them to a house which was totally unsuitable.
:12:27. > :12:30.An expert surveyor had told us that this house in Rhoose near Barry
:12:30. > :12:37.would be damp within months if the wall cavities were filled with
:12:38. > :12:43.So we rigged the house with hidden cameras. Then we invited some
:12:43. > :12:47.leading insulation companies to carry out a survey. Only one
:12:47. > :12:52.advised against getting the insulation. One of them, the Mark
:12:52. > :12:56.Group, was particularly keen to sign us up. There's no chance of
:12:56. > :13:00.this wool stuff making our house damp? No, absolutely. You won't
:13:00. > :13:04.have a problem with it. It's guaranteed. Well, since we showed
:13:04. > :13:07.that investigation, lots of you have been in touch. One or two of
:13:07. > :13:10.you have said you are completely happy with your insulation and we
:13:10. > :13:13.should emphasise that for most houses, it works really well.
:13:13. > :13:18.many of you have had terrible experiences. Julian Dyer from
:13:18. > :13:21.Swansea says his living room used to look like this. But since he had
:13:21. > :13:28.cavity wall insulation in 2010, he's had to redecorate four times
:13:28. > :13:32.and it's still a mess. Mark and Jeanette Jeffery from Barry had to
:13:32. > :13:37.have their insulation removed but the damp problem is still there.
:13:37. > :13:40.And Juliet Lewis from Bettws near Newport has also been in touch. She
:13:40. > :13:49.says the paint on her walls has been cracking and falling off since
:13:49. > :13:52.her landlord had cavity wall insulation two years ago.
:13:52. > :13:55.While the sun is shining here in Aberystwyth today, just a few weeks
:13:55. > :13:58.ago, heavy rain caused flash flooding in villages not far from
:13:58. > :14:08.here. Since then, all those families who were affected have had
:14:08. > :14:11.to start rebuilding their lives. The flooding this weekend may have
:14:11. > :14:15.missed Wales, but the effects of last month's rain are still being
:14:15. > :14:19.felt around Aberystwyth. A month's rain fell in 24 hours and
:14:19. > :14:22.parts of the area were under five feet of water.
:14:22. > :14:27.They are still clearing up and today Prince Charles was visiting
:14:27. > :14:30.victims. Some people have lost everything
:14:30. > :14:34.and have no hope of getting it back, because they were not insured.
:14:34. > :14:38.People like Marian Erskine and her family.
:14:38. > :14:48.So this is it, home sweet home? Yes, it was.
:14:48. > :14:51.
:14:51. > :14:57.So shall we go and have a look? The first thing that hits you is
:14:57. > :15:01.the smell. That musty damp smell.
:15:01. > :15:05.Oh, look at it. Oh, Marian, it must be horrible for
:15:05. > :15:15.you seeing it like this. It is very sad.
:15:15. > :15:26.
:15:26. > :15:34.Were you insured? What happened on the D of the flops? I was watching
:15:34. > :15:44.on the television never knowing what would happen to us. The water
:15:44. > :15:47.came up through the floor. It was totally unexpected. And where you
:15:47. > :15:49.insured? No, we could not afford it, with
:15:49. > :15:52.the cost of the gas and electric going up.
:15:52. > :15:56.We did not have enough money to pay for insurance.
:15:56. > :16:00.Marian is now living on a friend's sofa. One of her sons is sleeping
:16:00. > :16:03.in a car, with the family dog. But there are some who did have
:16:03. > :16:07.cover, but will not claim, because the excess on their policies was so
:16:07. > :16:10.high. We have heard about one man from
:16:10. > :16:14.Talybont, just up the road from Marian.
:16:14. > :16:18.Now, he could afford to do the right thing and got insurance.
:16:18. > :16:22.But now he can not claim on it, because his excess is a staggering
:16:22. > :16:27.�7,500. And his furniture just was not
:16:27. > :16:30.worth that. These are not isolated cases.
:16:30. > :16:34.And it looks like more people in areas like this could be priced out
:16:34. > :16:40.of the insurance market. I have been getting insurance
:16:40. > :16:44.quotes for a number of addresses in areas hit by June's floods.
:16:44. > :16:49.Some truly astonishing results here. When we said the addresses had not
:16:49. > :16:52.flooded, we got dozens of quotes, starting at about �150 a go.
:16:52. > :16:59.But when we said the same properties had flooded, we only got
:16:59. > :17:05.one quote and the premiums were starting at over �500 each.
:17:05. > :17:11.That is a price rise of more than 350%.
:17:11. > :17:14.I think it is clear why some people just cannot afford to get insurance.
:17:14. > :17:17.In fact, the charity National Flood Forum are calling for a radical
:17:17. > :17:23.overhaul of the entire insurance industry, to make sure people in
:17:23. > :17:26.flood-hit areas can still afford to insure their homes.
:17:26. > :17:29.At the Riverside Caravan Park, they are still clearing up after the
:17:29. > :17:34.floods. Dave Edwards was here when the
:17:34. > :17:37.water swept through. So what was it like on the night it
:17:37. > :17:42.happened? It was just horrendous. We were
:17:42. > :17:45.here with four children and we were just focused on getting them out.
:17:45. > :17:48.It was coming in from that diection and that direction.
:17:48. > :17:50.He had insurance to cover his losses, but others were not so
:17:50. > :17:54.lucky. Park owner Stephen South shows me
:17:54. > :17:59.around. Oh, Steve, it is heartbreaking
:17:59. > :18:02.seeing this. Yes, it is pretty devastating.
:18:02. > :18:07.And you see remnants of happy times, happy holidays - kids' footballs
:18:07. > :18:11.and rugby balls. Shall we clear some of this out?
:18:11. > :18:14.Yeah, yeah. This family came from the Midlands.
:18:14. > :18:16.They had, or they have got, a disabled son. He used to love to
:18:17. > :18:21.come down here. Were they insured for this?
:18:21. > :18:24.Unfortunately, no, they were not. Some of the touring caravans were
:18:24. > :18:27.not insured, but Stephen helps insure the static caravans on the
:18:27. > :18:31.site. A big hike in premiums could be
:18:31. > :18:35.catastrophic. If your insurance went up 300% for
:18:35. > :18:38.this site, would you be able to continue with your business?
:18:38. > :18:43.No, no, it would be impossible, really.
:18:43. > :18:47.And how does that make you feel? Well, it is 23 years of a business
:18:47. > :18:53.gone down the pan. Sweat and tears and it has all come
:18:53. > :18:56.to nothing, pretty well. It has been a really tough time for
:18:56. > :19:06.those affected by the floods and the possibility of rising insurance
:19:06. > :19:06.
:19:06. > :19:10.costs is not going to help. So what do the people around here think?
:19:10. > :19:15.think it is something that reinsurance companies just try and
:19:15. > :19:21.get out of pain for staff. If you pay your insurance, they should pay
:19:21. > :19:29.out. It is just one of these things, but I do not think people should
:19:29. > :19:33.have to pay more. Ensure in scum is a there to make sure everything is
:19:33. > :19:41.sorted out afterwards, but they are also a profit-making industry, so
:19:41. > :19:46.the are not going to take met when the sort of things happen. 35 years
:19:46. > :19:52.he are saying was the last time that flooded and they're going to
:19:52. > :19:55.charge people extra for that. They should accept it. That is what you
:19:56. > :20:00.pay insurance for at the end of the day.

:20:05. > :20:15.people to donate household goods and Hazel Lloyd Lubran is one of

:20:19. > :20:25.the volunteers. All of the volunteers have donated a huge
:20:25. > :20:32.amount. We have been inundated with everything you could imagine for
:20:32. > :20:41.you're house. We have clothing, shoes, Brading, towels. The second
:20:41. > :20:49.shop floor is absolutely full of stuff - Ted's toys, books, DVDs.
:20:49. > :20:53.there is a warehouse? Yes, there is a warehouse full of white goods. We
:20:53. > :21:01.have actually had to stop taking donations because we do not have
:21:01. > :21:09.many more space for them. A Hazell, if they can interrupt you for a
:21:09. > :21:16.minute. You have been helping co- ordinate all this. The their
:21:16. > :21:25.families and couples who have lost everything, who are having to be
:21:26. > :21:29.rehoused and B are wanting to help them carry on from day to day.
:21:29. > :21:33.Thank you. Next, we thought we had heard every excuse in the book from
:21:33. > :21:36.furniture companies about why their sofas may not be up to scratch. But
:21:36. > :21:46.this is the weirdest one we have come across. Rhodri has got the
:21:46. > :21:51.
:21:51. > :21:56.There are a few reasons why you might not want too much grease in
:21:56. > :22:00.your hair, but I have never heard of one like this before.
:22:00. > :22:04.Graham Walters from Tongwynlais is a man with a fine head of hair. But
:22:04. > :22:08.recently he feels it has come in for some unjustified criticism.
:22:08. > :22:12.I have had the same hairdresser for 20 years and she has said that I do
:22:12. > :22:16.not have greasy hair! But it is not Graham's hairdresser
:22:16. > :22:23.who has got a problem with his luscious locks - it is the people
:22:23. > :22:28.that sold him his settee! Hiya, how are you doing? Nice to
:22:28. > :22:31.see you. Graham and his wife Jean paid
:22:31. > :22:37.almost �1,200 for two sofas from Harvey The Furniture Store in
:22:37. > :22:40.Cardiff in August 2010. They were delivered in December
:22:40. > :22:45.that year. The couple also bought an additional leather care policy
:22:45. > :22:49.for �185 and a leather care kit for �40.
:22:49. > :22:53.Jean was meticulous about looking after her new suite.
:22:53. > :22:56.So when did you first notice that there was a problem with it?
:22:56. > :23:01.About 13 months after we purchased it, I happened to notice a little
:23:01. > :23:06.orange speck on the headrest. And as Jean tried to maintain her
:23:06. > :23:09.sofa, the problem just got worse. You could feel the leather coming
:23:09. > :23:12.away, you know. I agreed with him there was
:23:12. > :23:14.something wrong and, as he says, it was getting bigger and bigger.
:23:14. > :23:17.After the couple complained to Harvey's, they sent a
:23:17. > :23:21.representative round to inspect the sofa and he came up with a
:23:21. > :23:25.surprising cause for the problems they had had.
:23:25. > :23:33.They wrote back to us and said it looked very much like it was hair
:23:33. > :23:35.oil. That was natural and that it was not a manufacturing fault.
:23:35. > :23:40.You must have been shocked at these responses?
:23:40. > :23:43.They do not know me, they have not seen me, so how can they say this?
:23:43. > :23:46.Jean and Graham insist they are always sitting in different seats.
:23:46. > :23:56.If there was a problem with head oil, it would affect all the
:23:56. > :23:59.headrests, not just the one that is They called in a leather expert,
:23:59. > :24:03.Keith Gibson, an independent furniture specialist. He has been
:24:03. > :24:07.in the business 35 years. After inspecting their suite, Keith
:24:07. > :24:11.has got a different take on what has caused the problems.
:24:11. > :24:15.Keith, you have had a good look at the sofa here. What are your
:24:15. > :24:19.thoughts on what you have seen? Harveys said to Mr Walters that
:24:19. > :24:23.there is a build-up of grease. This is just a cloth. I have wiped this
:24:23. > :24:28.leather here and you can see there is no grease on my cloth at all,
:24:28. > :24:32.yet the leather itself is still just peeling away, effortlessly.
:24:32. > :24:34.So it's a breakdown of sealant. I believe it is done in the
:24:34. > :24:38.manufacturing stage, where there has not been enough sealant put on
:24:38. > :24:40.the product. And the only way to rectify it is
:24:40. > :24:43.to reseal the leather. Unfortunately for Jean and Graham,
:24:43. > :24:46.Harvey's will not accept Keith's findings, because he is not VAT
:24:46. > :24:52.registered! What does he make of that?
:24:52. > :24:55.No, I am not VAT registered, but I do have qualifications.
:24:55. > :24:58.I got Distinction in City & Guilds, I did a five-year apprenticeship
:24:58. > :25:00.and so forth. I have been the sole upholsterer
:25:00. > :25:04.for numerous companies and my expertise in this range should
:25:04. > :25:06.qualify me to come out and look at this leather and say what is wrong
:25:06. > :25:09.with it. Harvey's own video shows their
:25:09. > :25:12.factory in Bridgend. They say the leather is checked
:25:12. > :25:16.before being made into covers, but Jean and Graham do not think the
:25:16. > :25:19.quality control process was up to scratch on their sofa.
:25:19. > :25:24.The company claims each item made in Bridgend is checked before being
:25:24. > :25:27.dispatched. But John and Jenny Day from Cwmbran
:25:27. > :25:35.have had that sinking feeling since they received their suite last
:25:35. > :25:41.November. I went to see for myself. Sit down and try. You will find it
:25:41. > :25:44.very soft, very dippy. I can tell it straight away. At the

:27:24. > :27:26.Max Factor mascara on eBay. This is the fake, which she was
:27:26. > :27:30.selling for a fiver. And this is the real thing, which
:27:30. > :27:34.you can buy on the high street for just a few quid more.
:27:34. > :27:36.The packaging on the fake does look pretty convincing.
:27:36. > :27:39.Yes, but Powys Trading Standards found the stuff inside contained
:27:39. > :27:44.high levels of lead, which is obviously not going to do you any
:27:44. > :27:47.good at all. Leanne Wetheim, who was selling the
:27:48. > :27:50.mascara and other fake make-up, has now been brought to justice.
:27:50. > :27:57.She has been given an eight-month suspended prison sentence and 160
:27:57. > :27:59.hours community service. But it goes to show how careful you
:27:59. > :28:02.have to be when you are bargain hunting.
