:00:13. > :00:18.have been scammed or dealt a raw deal. We are on your side. Exposing

:00:19. > :00:20.the truth and tracking down the rogues and we won't take no for an

:00:21. > :00:33.answer. On tonight's programme -

:00:34. > :00:36.justice at last for victims of this Basically they threw

:00:37. > :00:43.the car together just to sell it. My wife, I bought her

:00:44. > :00:46.a car that could potentially have These six families thought they'd

:00:47. > :00:50.booked a New Year getaway. But their plans were ruined

:00:51. > :00:53.by heartless hackers. I got

:00:54. > :00:56.a phone call back to say she didn't She just immediately said

:00:57. > :01:03.to me you've been scammed. And Christmas is the season

:01:04. > :01:06.of peace and goodwill - unless you're fighting over

:01:07. > :01:13.a bargain on Black Friday! First tonight,

:01:14. > :01:16.he's one of the worst car dealers we've ever come across, but finally

:01:17. > :01:19.a rogue trader from right here in Five names in as many years -

:01:20. > :01:32.the signs over this garage in Barry change, but the man

:01:33. > :01:38.behind it stays the same. Nasser Asfi - the most complained

:01:39. > :01:42.about car dealer in town. For years he's been trying to give

:01:43. > :01:45.his customers - and The business name was changing very

:01:46. > :01:52.often, this was a way of trying to escape investigation or

:01:53. > :01:58.obviously prevent us, trading standards, from looking at them and

:01:59. > :02:02.tracing who was behind the company. But the law has finally caught

:02:03. > :02:08.up with this slippery trader. He could now be facing jail -

:02:09. > :02:11.after admitting selling dangerous It shouldn't be on the road,

:02:12. > :02:24.it was absolutely a death trap. This isn't the first time

:02:25. > :02:27.Nasser Asfi's been in trouble. Four years ago this court ordered him

:02:28. > :02:29.to pay back ?11,000 But he didn't stop

:02:30. > :02:40.and customers who'd been ripped off by his garages began asking us

:02:41. > :02:44.to expose his dodgy dealings. Linda Savory told us how she paid

:02:45. > :02:47.eighteen hundred pounds for a Renault Scenic from what was

:02:48. > :02:50.then Trade Price Cars. But it still had an unpaid

:02:51. > :02:53.loan against it - which meant If I'd have known then what I know

:02:54. > :03:01.now, I would not have touched After we got involved,

:03:02. > :03:06.Nasser paid her back. We then discovered his garage

:03:07. > :03:09.was selling insurance write offs But when we visited,

:03:10. > :03:15.we didn't get a warm welcome If I get out I promise you,

:03:16. > :03:23.I'll smash down your The following year,

:03:24. > :03:29.we heard more horror stories from Harriet Jenkins, Richard

:03:30. > :03:34.Aboulachouaq and Garreth Gilbert. All of a sudden my power steering

:03:35. > :03:37.died going around a roundabout. I was coming off the motorway,

:03:38. > :03:40.off the slip-road and Driving round about between 50

:03:41. > :03:45.and 60 miles an hour with We said the car's unsafe,

:03:46. > :03:50.all of these should have been picked up when the car entered

:03:51. > :03:53.your dealership, and he just kept saying to me 'I don't sell unsafe

:03:54. > :03:59.cars, why would I sell unsafe cars. At the same time X-Ray was

:04:00. > :04:02.investigating, Trading Standards were building a prosecution against

:04:03. > :04:08.Nasser Asfi and his brother Asghar, Their key witness was Mike Smith,

:04:09. > :04:13.from Briton Ferry - My wife heard a noise coming

:04:14. > :04:20.from the back brakes. It was supposed to have just

:04:21. > :04:26.passed its MOT, and the back of the Mike's car should never have been

:04:27. > :04:32.on the road. The brakes and suspension were

:04:33. > :04:36.worn and there was a mysterious And how's this for a quality

:04:37. > :04:43.repair job - the exhaust had been It looks like it had been standing

:04:44. > :04:52.in a scrap heap for two years and basically they threw

:04:53. > :04:56.the car together just to sell it. My wife, obviously, I bought her

:04:57. > :04:59.a car that could potentially have Mike's case gave Trading Standards

:05:00. > :05:03.the evidence they needed, There were five vehicles found to be

:05:04. > :05:10.an unroadworthy and dangerous condition,

:05:11. > :05:13.these were serious defects which included corrosion, oil leaks,

:05:14. > :05:21.and issues surrounding tyres. Clearly they were bringing cars in,

:05:22. > :05:24.and just putting a sales ticket on there without carrying out any

:05:25. > :05:28.checks whatsoever. But getting Nasser Asfi to admit

:05:29. > :05:35.them was far more difficult. His story didn't add up at all,

:05:36. > :05:39.So he denied all knowledge He talked about his brother being

:05:40. > :05:47.the person in charge and how he gave advice in relation to running

:05:48. > :05:50.the business with his brother. And when we visited

:05:51. > :05:53.the garage last year, He's no longer here he's

:05:54. > :06:04.got nothing to do with us. He has got something to

:06:05. > :06:07.do with this company. Earlier this year,

:06:08. > :06:09.Ashgar admitted 10 charges But his brother Nasser was

:06:10. > :06:14.a harder nut to crack. He insisted the business was owned

:06:15. > :06:18.by someone else called Jamal Asfi. But that's Nasser's middle name -

:06:19. > :06:26.which became clear in court. Mr Asfi was granted bail,

:06:27. > :06:30.and produced a passport which was in the name of Jamal Asfi, which again

:06:31. > :06:35.pointed back to the director of the company, and eventually he pleaded

:06:36. > :06:41.guilty to the charges he was facing. Two weeks ago,

:06:42. > :06:43.Nasser Asfi finally admitted six The garage,

:06:44. > :06:55.is still open for business and signs claim it's under new management -

:06:56. > :06:58.but we're not convinced. Shortly after we started filming

:06:59. > :07:01.here someone did drive on to the forecourt who we believe

:07:02. > :07:04.was Nasser Asfi. Staff quickly locked the gate,

:07:05. > :07:07.but we think we spotted Nasser He might have to get used to being

:07:08. > :07:18.locked up though - he's due to be sentenced next month and could well

:07:19. > :07:23.be spending Christmas behind bars. We'll let you know what happens

:07:24. > :07:27.to Nasser Asfi in the New Year. And if you've come

:07:28. > :07:30.across any cowboy car dealers - or if there's anything else you want us

:07:31. > :07:38.to look into, then give us a call on The doors are about to open on

:07:39. > :07:52.another Black Friday - the day when They were acting like animals,

:07:53. > :07:56.David Attenborough should have been Now Christmas

:07:57. > :08:07.and New Year are fast approaching! But Rachel's been to meet one group

:08:08. > :08:10.of friends who aren't feeling The best of friends - this bunch

:08:11. > :08:15.of mates from Bridgend love to spend Our husbands all went to school

:08:16. > :08:21.together, then the wives came into it and then

:08:22. > :08:24.we've had children, so basically we What's it like

:08:25. > :08:30.when you all get together? Can be chaos, but also a lot of fun,

:08:31. > :08:34.we love spending time with each other and then as often as we can we

:08:35. > :08:38.try to get weekends away! And seeing in the New Year together

:08:39. > :08:41.has become a tradition for New Year's obviously our annual

:08:42. > :08:49.thing which the children really These get-togethers are

:08:50. > :08:53.a big deal then, and - as you can imagine - it's not easy

:08:54. > :08:56.finding somewhere that can cope with This year, it was Gemma's turn

:08:57. > :09:01.to arrange their festive fun. And in September she spotted

:09:02. > :09:04.the perfect place in the Usk Valley It was close to home,

:09:05. > :09:13.not far for us to go and it had enough rooms for us - everything we

:09:14. > :09:18.were looking for really! Keen to seal the deal, Gemma sent

:09:19. > :09:21.an e-mail through the booking site, Had a response to say the dates were

:09:22. > :09:32.unavailable to start with and then within 45 minutes I had another

:09:33. > :09:36.e-mail to say please ignore the last e-mail, I had the dates mixed up,

:09:37. > :09:40.we are actually available. Just quickly glanced at it,

:09:41. > :09:42.obviously was ecstatic that it was Yes, quick book it now - she offered

:09:43. > :09:49.us a discounted rate if we were to The three night break would

:09:50. > :09:53.cost ?1,500 and had to be One by one,

:09:54. > :10:01.the six families sent their money. But when Gemma phoned the owner

:10:02. > :10:04.of the holiday home to check some final details,

:10:05. > :10:08.she was in for a horrible shock. I got a phone call back to say she

:10:09. > :10:16.didn't know what I was talking about - she had sent me an e-mail to

:10:17. > :10:19.say they were fully booked and she just immediately said to me you've

:10:20. > :10:22.been scammed - you could imagine, Everybody contacted their banks

:10:23. > :10:29.but it was too late really cos we Group Accommodation told us there

:10:30. > :10:37.are no security problems with their website and the breach must

:10:38. > :10:44.have happened through They quickly removed it

:10:45. > :10:47.from their listings. But the hackers had already done

:10:48. > :10:50.the damage. The first e-mail Gemma received

:10:51. > :10:56.was from the real property owner. But the rest came

:10:57. > :10:58.from a fraudster who'd hacked They were sent

:10:59. > :11:04.from an e-mail account with a which suggests

:11:05. > :11:13.the hacker is based in Spain. To make it look convincing,

:11:14. > :11:15.the fraudster even copied Gemma's We also spoke to someone else who

:11:16. > :11:23.was targeted by the same hackers Luckily they spotted

:11:24. > :11:27.the dodgy e-mail address They will sit there and they

:11:28. > :11:34.will look at the e-mails they They're looking

:11:35. > :11:37.for the moment the vulnerability Take this example, 24 people wanted

:11:38. > :11:43.to have a holiday, very difficult to get a house for 24 people,

:11:44. > :11:47.and they jumped at it , because it And

:11:48. > :11:53.when it came to the bank transfer, They used the real property

:11:54. > :11:58.owner's name, but the account Something Tony has seen

:11:59. > :12:04.many times before. Really the only thing

:12:05. > :12:07.the bank are looking at is the sort We traced those details back to

:12:08. > :12:12.a branch of Natwest in Nottingham. The bank told us

:12:13. > :12:15.the account is under review, but said it's up to the person

:12:16. > :12:18.making the payment to check it's Bank transfers are risky, but

:12:19. > :12:28.if you have to send money this way, always ring the person or company

:12:29. > :12:31.first - on a landline if they have That way you'll also know

:12:32. > :12:40.if they're expecting the payment. The National Fraud Intelligence

:12:41. > :12:42.Bureau estimates that more than two million pounds were lost through

:12:43. > :12:45.scams like this last year - making online security more

:12:46. > :12:53.important than ever. We haven't got one key for

:12:54. > :12:56.everything we do in our life, we can't afford to have one password,

:12:57. > :12:59.because if that one password is compromised it's compromised

:13:00. > :13:01.on every single thing we do. Back in Bridgend, Gemma's friends

:13:02. > :13:03.are angry at what's happened, We've never blamed Gemma,

:13:04. > :13:10.it was no-one's fault. Be extra careful,

:13:11. > :13:16.make sure you make that phone call - They're still hoping that the 24

:13:17. > :13:22.of them can get away for New Year, but at the moment it's not looking

:13:23. > :13:28.hopeful. This will be the first time in

:13:29. > :13:37.about six years we haven't gone and we started going when I was about

:13:38. > :13:40.four years old. holiday booking scams like this are

:13:41. > :13:43.on the rise - so we've put information on our website

:13:44. > :13:46.for you on how to spot the signs. And, hacking hit the headlines

:13:47. > :13:49.on a massive scale last month, when criminals stole the details

:13:50. > :13:51.of more than a hundred and fifty thousand Talk Talk

:13:52. > :13:53.customers - including the bank Now, if you're a Talk Talk customer,

:13:54. > :14:00.the company should have already told you by now whether or not YOUR

:14:01. > :14:06.details have been compromised. If you haven't heard

:14:07. > :14:08.from them then you need to call But if your details have been

:14:09. > :14:13.stolen, what can you do? Well, Gwen Evans is

:14:14. > :14:16.a solicitor representing a number Gwen, this must be a very worrying

:14:17. > :14:27.time for people? the people who've contacted me are

:14:28. > :14:32.understandably very distressed about the matter, they're worried about

:14:33. > :14:34.matters, they're changing their internet passwords for example,

:14:35. > :14:36.checking their bank accounts daily, sometimes more frequently than

:14:37. > :14:38.that, looking for strange activity So very worrying then,

:14:39. > :14:42.but Talk Talk are saying that if customers have been affected,

:14:43. > :14:44.or not, they should have received Well as I understand it, there are

:14:45. > :14:55.a range of categories of data that have been taken from names,

:14:56. > :14:57.addresses and dates of birth on the one hand through to the top end, the

:14:58. > :15:01.more serious end of the scale, where credit card and bank account

:15:02. > :15:03.details have been stolen. Whatever may have been compromised

:15:04. > :15:06.though, people are going to be Well, of course people can contact

:15:07. > :15:09.Talk Talk directly and discuss the matter with them.

:15:10. > :15:12.Alternatively they can contact the Information Commissioner's

:15:13. > :15:14.office which is an independent body And if people are distressed or

:15:15. > :15:19.concerned about the matter and their details have been stolen, the

:15:20. > :15:21.data protection act provides for compensation in these circumstances

:15:22. > :15:29.so it's important that they seek independent legal advice

:15:30. > :15:32.from a specialist solicitor. Really useful advice there,

:15:33. > :15:36.Gwen, thank you very much. And Talk Talk have told us that

:15:37. > :15:39.if anyone has lost money as a result of the data breach, they

:15:40. > :15:42.should contact them immediately. They're also offering all customers

:15:43. > :15:44.free upgrades from next week - and So head to their website

:15:45. > :15:49.for more information. Next, I've been to Carmarthenshire,

:15:50. > :15:52.to try and solve the mystery The best slate

:15:53. > :16:03.in the world comes from North Wales Welsh slate is a huge part

:16:04. > :16:08.of our history. And it's been used in some of our

:16:09. > :16:13.nation's most important buildings. More than 1,300 tonnes of slate,

:16:14. > :16:18.from quarries across North Wales, were used to build the iconic

:16:19. > :16:22.Wales Millennium Centre. Many of us have slate on our roofs,

:16:23. > :16:30.but it's In fact,

:16:31. > :16:36.there's a whole industry built on it, from cheeseboards to placemats,

:16:37. > :16:45.clocks, even photos on slate! John Tustin from Llangynog

:16:46. > :16:48.in Carmarthenshire is a big fan of the stuff and knew exactly how he

:16:49. > :16:51.wanted to use it in his new home. The previous owners had a

:16:52. > :16:54.South African connection. So they had called

:16:55. > :16:58.the house Randburg. Now we were coming back to Wales

:16:59. > :17:01.having travelled the world for over 35 years so we felt it would be more

:17:02. > :17:06.appropriate to rename the house Nant-Y-Ffin, which actually means

:17:07. > :17:11.bordered by the stream, and if you look outside the window behind me

:17:12. > :17:14.there is a little stream that In rural areas

:17:15. > :17:18.like this there aren't any house numbers or street signs

:17:19. > :17:27.so a name plaque is very important. Most of the houses have slate signs

:17:28. > :17:30.so we thought let's follow suit, let's

:17:31. > :17:33.be part of the village, so we ordered a Welsh slate sign,

:17:34. > :17:38.which was on a Welsh house, in a John looked online and found a sign

:17:39. > :17:45.he liked on a website called Bespoke You could design your own slate

:17:46. > :17:55.sign, the size of the sign, the colour of the font and they promised

:17:56. > :17:58.they could deliver the slate to you Bespoke Slate boasts that clients

:17:59. > :18:05.will receive their goods on time, But weeks after ordering it, there

:18:06. > :18:13.was still no sign of John's sign. We kept ringing and ringing

:18:14. > :18:17.and getting a message on an answer phone, I left my message

:18:18. > :18:21.asking them to call me back. Eventually, John had an email

:18:22. > :18:24.which said there had been Bespoke Slate reassured John that

:18:25. > :18:29.his sign had been made Just one snag -

:18:30. > :18:39.he'd have to pay all over again! I thought, are you taking me

:18:40. > :18:45.for a fool. What do you think I am? Stupid!

:18:46. > :18:47.I said, no, I'm not paying again. So I emailed them back

:18:48. > :18:50.and said Thank you very much but as you've got the sign and

:18:51. > :18:53.as it's ready then send it to me. In the end,

:18:54. > :18:57.John gave up and luckily, his credit So financially,

:18:58. > :19:03.his slate was wiped clean. John now has a new sign

:19:04. > :19:07.from the local market. But he's not

:19:08. > :19:12.the only one who's had problems with Bespoke Slate. Online there are

:19:13. > :19:16.dozens of very similar complaints! Rhondda Cynon Taf Trading Standards

:19:17. > :19:20.have told us that in the last six months they have received 64

:19:21. > :19:22.complaints about Bespoke Slate. Then in September the website

:19:23. > :19:29.mysteriously disappeared. It seemed Bespoke Slate

:19:30. > :19:32.had stopped trading. When we did some digging,

:19:33. > :19:40.we found this from 2010. An identical looking website called

:19:41. > :19:43.Prestige Slate - it even has And you might recognise

:19:44. > :19:49.the man behind it, Alex Mills, a former Apprentice candidate with

:19:50. > :19:52.amazing eyebrows, but not such 140 customers complained

:19:53. > :20:02.about Prestige Slate to Trading Standards. I don't think

:20:03. > :20:04.Lord Sugar would have been impressed Alex Mills sold Prestige

:20:05. > :20:11.Slate two years ago. But a former employee later bought

:20:12. > :20:15.the website and rebranded it. His name is Gareth Jones

:20:16. > :20:19.and he is also the man behind three Premier Slate -

:20:20. > :20:25.which was also closed recently. And Trading Standards have

:20:26. > :20:32.had plenty of other We spoke to one customer of

:20:33. > :20:42.Quality Slate who did actually receive her sign, although it was

:20:43. > :20:48.anything but quality! We decided to pay Gareth Jones

:20:49. > :20:51.a visit, at the address listed on the websites of Quality

:20:52. > :20:55.and Luxury Slate. And according to the neighbours,

:20:56. > :21:03.there hasn't been for two months! Well, we finally got hold of

:21:04. > :21:06.Gareth Jones and he denies changing his company

:21:07. > :21:09.names to avoid paying back customers Gareth Jones admits he has made

:21:10. > :21:15.mistakes, but blames his payment As a gesture of goodwill,

:21:16. > :21:21.he's offering to make him Trading Standards told us they're

:21:22. > :21:29.keeping a close eye on Mr Jones's Now there are just 31

:21:30. > :21:37.days until Christmas and the shops So what's your strategy for getting

:21:38. > :21:41.a good deal on your presents? Let's see what people here in Barry

:21:42. > :21:48.are doing this year. How are you doing on your Christmas

:21:49. > :21:49.shopping? First day. Any tips

:21:50. > :21:59.for getting good deals? Um,

:22:00. > :22:01.online is a very good idea I save I get loads through petrol

:22:02. > :22:07.and stuff like that, so we tend to shop with them and it's really good,

:22:08. > :22:12.the kids get to choose, I give them the vouchers. I bought the wrapping

:22:13. > :22:15.paper 2 days ago and it's all done, What about all the presents though,

:22:16. > :22:19.when do you buy them? I start in the January sales and I

:22:20. > :22:21.finished yesterday, I've been looking at car boots

:22:22. > :22:26.and charity shops, really, Is she a pretty savvy shopper,

:22:27. > :22:32.is she? That's a secret, innit,
