0:00:02 > 0:00:05Every minute of every day, someone somewhere is getting burgled.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10Doesn't sound good.

0:00:10 > 0:00:15With an average of 92 break-ins an hour, it's a huge problem.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21It never ceases to amaze me

0:00:21 > 0:00:24how much mess these burglars cause for people.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28For the victims of these crimes, it can take months or even years

0:00:28 > 0:00:31to overcome the trauma.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33Everywhere in the house is completely ransacked.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36Everything we had stored was damaged.

0:00:36 > 0:00:37It's disgusting.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41You know, I don't have much myself.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44But in this series, we are fighting back against the burglar.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46- Police forcing entry!- Police!

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Helping you to beef up your security...

0:00:49 > 0:00:50Here we go.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..while the police catch the criminals.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Oh, yeah, feel safer now, a lot safer.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Everything's going to be fine for you, isn't it?

0:01:00 > 0:01:01This is...

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Today on Break-In Britain, I'm with Sharon and Glen,

0:01:09 > 0:01:12who not only have to deal with the devastation of having their

0:01:12 > 0:01:16home burgled - they're also miffed that the thieves stole their beer.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18The ale! Is nothing safe?

0:01:18 > 0:01:21Been upstairs, rifled through drawers, been through my jewellery.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25- They've taken my beer.- Your beer? - My beer.

0:01:25 > 0:01:26'It's unbelievable.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29'And we see the awful effect it has on Sharon.'

0:01:29 > 0:01:32What if they want to come back and take the TV?

0:01:32 > 0:01:34What if, when we go to work tomorrow or whatever...?

0:01:34 > 0:01:39And you know, they shouldn't be in your house, should they?

0:01:39 > 0:01:41And I'm in South Wales, where items left

0:01:41 > 0:01:43dumped at the side of the road

0:01:43 > 0:01:46lead to the discovery of a burglary.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49What gives them the right to come into somebody else...?

0:01:49 > 0:01:54What...? Do they think it is OK to do that, you know?

0:01:54 > 0:01:58I would like to understand more about the way they're thinking.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10In West Yorkshire there are more than 200 burglaries a week

0:02:10 > 0:02:13and nearly half occur when nobody is home.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Whether you leave your house for a few hours or a few days,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19an empty property is always more vulnerable to attack.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23And when the owners are not home,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26it falls to neighbours or family like Edith to pick up the pieces.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11For 62-year-old Edith, finding the side door

0:03:11 > 0:03:15of her nephew's home smashed in was chilling.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17So I went up and had a look,

0:03:17 > 0:03:21and then I phoned you and then I phoned Sharon.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24No problem. When you've come, you've literally seen the damage to the door...?

0:03:24 > 0:03:26I seen that and I pushed the door open,

0:03:26 > 0:03:28but I daren't go right in in case they were still in.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30Fair enough, fair enough.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37When postal worker Sharon got home with husband Glen,

0:03:37 > 0:03:40who is an upholsterer, they couldn't believe it had happened to them.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42It just shows you. It's ridiculous.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Officers from West Yorkshire Police are on the case.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50What property has been taken?

0:03:50 > 0:03:52Definitely my iPad, cos that were in the room.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55It's got a pink case on it.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58There were a watch in there that is gone. That's gone.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02It is clear Sharon and Glen are upset about the events.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05They've rifled through that cupboard, they've been upstairs,

0:04:05 > 0:04:07rifled through drawers, been through my jewellery.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11- They have taken my beer.- Your beer? - My beer!

0:04:11 > 0:04:15- My iPad.- You got family photographs on that.- Yeah, I have.

0:04:15 > 0:04:20My grandson. His baby photographs, he's four.

0:04:20 > 0:04:25My brother's wedding, our holidays, videos. I can't get them back.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29Can I? It's things like that. That's sentimental to me.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33- And how did you feel when you got that phone call?- I felt sick.- I bet.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Somebody has been in my house while we're at work.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41And we've worked for everything we've got, and it isn't theirs to take.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46It's upsetting that somebody you don't know, a total stranger,

0:04:46 > 0:04:50can take your lock off your door and walk into your house.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54Like in over 40% of burglaries,

0:04:54 > 0:04:57the thieves forced their way in in broad daylight.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00But what they didn't know was Big Brother was watching.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06A neighbour's CCTV caught the brazen criminals in the act.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09They aren't even running, are they? It's got to be someone local.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12- It's somebody that lives... They're on foot.- It will be.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15..obviously that lives in Leeds 12 area.

0:05:15 > 0:05:20There is a ginnel there, that's where they'll cut up. Or down.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22So they're definitely local.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25And they just think they can walk into your house. It's wrong.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28I hope their hands drop off, anyway.

0:05:28 > 0:05:29I do.

0:05:29 > 0:05:34The footage has infuriated Glen and Sharon.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37To see them walk, the way they have done it, come up and down,

0:05:37 > 0:05:41- it's just like it's...- Their house. - Like it's their street, their house, their drive.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45- Their door.- It's not, it's our house.- Ridiculous.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48I still can't believe somebody has come in my house.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51I hate it, I hate the thought of it, and these people who walk

0:05:51 > 0:05:55into your house and think, "I'll just take this, that and the other," might think that's OK,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57but it's not OK cos I aren't going to sleep to night,

0:05:57 > 0:06:00I'll tell you right now. I can feel it. I will not sleep.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03- Because you'll be so worried about it?- I'm upset about it.

0:06:03 > 0:06:08It is upsetting, to be honest. It is, definitely. It is for her.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11I mean, I'm her fella, but especially for...

0:06:11 > 0:06:14What if they want to come back and take the TV?

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Like when we go to work tomorrow or whatever?

0:06:17 > 0:06:21You know, that's what you think, "What if they come in again?"

0:06:21 > 0:06:23And you know, stuff is sentimental to you, isn't it?

0:06:23 > 0:06:26It's not just about what you paid for things, it's like,

0:06:26 > 0:06:29they shouldn't be in your house, should they?

0:06:31 > 0:06:35In just 12 minutes, these thieves robbed Sharon not just of her

0:06:35 > 0:06:38personal belongings, but of her peace of mind.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42And although the TV was too large to take on foot,

0:06:42 > 0:06:44Sharon's jewellery was ripe for the picking.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50- And this is your bedroom?- Yeah. - And they've been through your jewellery boxes?- Yeah.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Have they had anything?

0:06:52 > 0:06:54My sister bought me, a couple of years ago, a nice

0:06:54 > 0:06:57Vivienne Westwood necklace, that isn't there.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59Until you actually look about...

0:06:59 > 0:07:01I didn't realise Glen's watch had gone.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04I'm trying to think. You know in your head when you're trying to think?

0:07:04 > 0:07:09- You're in shock, your tired. - Yeah, it's shock.- And everything is a mess. It is difficult to think.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11I've been up since five this morning, I'm usually showered and...

0:07:11 > 0:07:15- Sat in your PJs by now.- Sat in my PJs, getting ready for bed.

0:07:17 > 0:07:18No early night for Sharon,

0:07:18 > 0:07:23but at least her son is on hand to do a temporary fix on the back door.

0:07:23 > 0:07:27But a lot more needs to be done to make her feel safe again.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30- How do think you will sleep tonight? - I don't think I will.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33Got a massive headache, I don't think I will. I am panicking.

0:07:33 > 0:07:34What are you panicking about?

0:07:34 > 0:07:37In case they come back or whatever, because I'm thinking,

0:07:37 > 0:07:39what if they've seen something and think, "We'll get a van"?

0:07:39 > 0:07:41I know you're not feeling up to going into work

0:07:41 > 0:07:44because of what has happened here today.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48We want to sort that out for you. We've got a guy who can come round

0:07:48 > 0:07:51and tell you exactly what you need, sort out the windows, the doors,

0:07:51 > 0:07:54put a new lock on and sort you out with a decent alarm.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58That would be brilliant. That would be great, yeah.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Sharon was quite angry, and to be honest with you, I don't blame her.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03Someone has come into her house uninvited

0:08:03 > 0:08:07and made her feel unsafe in her own home.

0:08:07 > 0:08:08That's no way to live,

0:08:08 > 0:08:12so I'm calling in the security experts to transform this house

0:08:12 > 0:08:16from a burglar's best friends to his worst enemy.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22The next day, crime reduction officer Nick Whitcombe

0:08:22 > 0:08:27is on hand to assess the existing security - or lack of it.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32He's spotted the lock Sharon's son has put in.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34It's only temporary, Nick, we promise!

0:08:36 > 0:08:40The patio doors don't have external keyholes, which is good news,

0:08:40 > 0:08:44but this heavy umbrella stand could be used as a weapon,

0:08:44 > 0:08:47and that is bad news.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Nick has got more than 30 years' police experience, and calls me

0:08:50 > 0:08:53outside on a hunch about the alleyway -

0:08:53 > 0:08:55the likely escape route of the burglars.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Here. Look.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03That's the make of the bottle that was stolen,

0:09:03 > 0:09:05that's the bottle top there.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08Look how it's bent. I bet that's teeth marks.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11I bet they have opened it with their teeth.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14You're going to collect this as evidence because you think...

0:09:14 > 0:09:17There may be some DNA on that, I don't know.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20'Could this really be one of Sharon's?'

0:09:20 > 0:09:23The bottle, we'll give them a chance to do a bit of drinking a bit

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- further up, and we'll no doubt find the bottle somewhere.- Right, OK.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30- Look, there's the bottle. - There it is.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Nice, fresh, newly drunk out of.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Who knows? Did they take their gloves off at this point?

0:09:36 > 0:09:39- And I presume it'll have the spit on it as well.- Very likely.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42A bit of DNA on there, no doubt.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45This ginnel may have provided the burglars with an undisturbed

0:09:45 > 0:09:48getaway, but it has also provided us

0:09:48 > 0:09:52with evidence that could be invaluable.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56So, why did the burglars choose Sharon's house?

0:09:56 > 0:10:01They'll have looked at the front door lock, which is a poor quality

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Euro-Profile, very breakable lock.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07- They probably think they'll find the same round the back.- Exactly.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10The hedges there, the low wall, yes, they could easily hop over it.

0:10:10 > 0:10:14Why not stick some nasty, spiky, horrible plants there?

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Make them stop at the perimeter and hesitate.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20Give them opportunity to look out of place.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24- And what are your final thoughts, then?- We need to cover that gap.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26Space between the garage and wall

0:10:26 > 0:10:30is enough for a criminal to slip through unobstructed.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Sharon's making their life too easy.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36Out of 10, what would you give this property for security?

0:10:40 > 0:10:41Five, just.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48So, a lot of work to be done, and only one man to do it - Neil Goldup.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51He's a security superstar,

0:10:51 > 0:10:55beefing up hundreds of homes a year with state-of-the-art systems.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57Right, better get cracking, then.

0:10:57 > 0:11:03We'll be back later to see if the security upgrade stops Sharon feeling vulnerable.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07Meanwhile, Dan is 270 miles away in Swansea,

0:11:07 > 0:11:10where another unoccupied house has been targeted.

0:11:16 > 0:11:21The rolling hills of Felindre, north of Swansea, may look

0:11:21 > 0:11:24serene and peaceful, but burglary is still, sadly, a reality.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30The moment you find out you've been burgled

0:11:30 > 0:11:32is always a horrible shock.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35You see the broken door or smashed window,

0:11:35 > 0:11:39and then you know that your home has been violated.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Imagine how one couple felt when they were away for the weekend

0:11:42 > 0:11:46and got a call to say that some of their most prized possessions

0:11:46 > 0:11:48were found dumped in a fly tipping crime.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53Possessions they thought were locked up safely at home.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00Environment officer Sandy and civil servant Rosie have spent

0:12:00 > 0:12:04the last seven years renovating their beautiful period cottage.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08When they left Wales for a trip to Bath, they never imagined

0:12:08 > 0:12:11the chain of events that would bring them home early.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14How did you find out you'd been burgled?

0:12:14 > 0:12:16It was weird, wasn't it?

0:12:16 > 0:12:20We were in Bath at the time, and I got a phone call from my boss,

0:12:20 > 0:12:23and we deal with environmental crime, such as fly tipping.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28He had got a call to say that some material had been fly tipped.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32He said, "We've got your warrant card here and your police notebook,"

0:12:32 > 0:12:38and this sort of thing, and so I'm thinking, "That was in my briefcase in the bedroom."

0:12:38 > 0:12:41And as we weren't here, I then phoned my neighbour up and said,

0:12:41 > 0:12:43"Will you go round and have a look?"

0:12:43 > 0:12:48So, they came round and phoned back and said, yes, the house was open.

0:12:52 > 0:12:53Sandy and Rosie raced home.

0:12:53 > 0:12:58The words "break-in" triggering some pretty scary thoughts.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00A bit of a difficult journey, wasn't it?

0:13:00 > 0:13:03Cos you don't know what to expect and you are sort of

0:13:03 > 0:13:07imagining the worst, really, that everything is going to be trashed.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11So not a very nice sort of feeling coming down.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13What was the scene like when you came back?

0:13:13 > 0:13:15Obviously the conservatory door,

0:13:15 > 0:13:18you could see where they had gained entry, and upstairs

0:13:18 > 0:13:24they had tipped out all the drawers, the cupboards in all the bedrooms,

0:13:24 > 0:13:29and they had left great big, dirty footprints everywhere, hadn't they?

0:13:29 > 0:13:31All over the carpets and things.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35The thieves trashed the bedroom and ruined the conservatory doors.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38But in doing so, they left vital evidence.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41CSI find finger marks on the door,

0:13:41 > 0:13:45but the smooth print means the criminals wore gloves.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47But they still put their foot in it.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51The force used to kick the door in has left a footprint,

0:13:51 > 0:13:54and this will be cross-checked against thousands of known

0:13:54 > 0:13:58criminals' footwear, and could turn up a match.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02- What has gone?- What's gone is your Christmas present.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Yes, a pair of wireless headphones,

0:14:05 > 0:14:07which were sitting on the windowsill over there.

0:14:07 > 0:14:12And then a load of copper and brass that was by the back of my workshop.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14But that's not all.

0:14:14 > 0:14:19And this is where Sandy said the wicker box was on top.

0:14:19 > 0:14:24Yeah, the wicker box sat on there, in that area just there.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28What had gone was a box, a raffia basket type of thing,

0:14:28 > 0:14:33and inside there was random stuff, looks like junk to anybody else,

0:14:33 > 0:14:37but there was my son's Scout belt from when he was nine,

0:14:37 > 0:14:43and there was his hanky that had been embroidered to commemorate my brother's death.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45And that's irreplaceable.

0:14:45 > 0:14:49Doesn't matter how much money you get, you just can't replace it.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53What meant so much to Sandy meant nothing to the burglars

0:14:53 > 0:14:56and was found as part of the fly tipped material

0:14:56 > 0:14:58just three miles away from their house.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Luckily enough, because of where they dumped them,

0:15:01 > 0:15:05and the fact that they also took my ID, I've got them back,

0:15:05 > 0:15:10which I wouldn't have done if they haven't taken my warrant card

0:15:10 > 0:15:12with all my details on.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15They could be in a hedge somewhere and I would never get it back.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18So although it is horrible, I am just so chuffed that

0:15:18 > 0:15:21it has come back, and that's what's important.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24I'm so pleased for Sunday that she got her box of precious

0:15:24 > 0:15:28mementos back, because it is those things that are priceless.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31But even so, like most victims,

0:15:31 > 0:15:35Sandy and Rosie feel disturbed by the intrusion.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38It is horrible, the thought that somebody has been in your house.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40We were relieved that there hasn't been more damage,

0:15:40 > 0:15:44but just the thought that somebody could gain entrance so easily, and you don't know who it is.

0:15:44 > 0:15:51Yeah, and also, now they know, sort of, what is in my workshop,

0:15:51 > 0:15:54it makes you lose confidence about whether actually

0:15:54 > 0:15:56somebody is going to pop back tonight and take the rest.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58It does, it makes you nervous.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02If it helps you out, we've got our security expect to pop round

0:16:02 > 0:16:04and see where the weaknesses are.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- Yeah.- And we can maybe fix them up for you so it hopefully won't happen again.

0:16:07 > 0:16:12That is absolutely, sort of... just fab.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15The pair are holding up well, but this house needs

0:16:15 > 0:16:19securing before night falls if they are going to feel protected.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21We'll be back later to do just that.

0:16:25 > 0:16:29Over in Lower Wortley in Leeds, Sharon still can't believe

0:16:29 > 0:16:32her house was burgled in broad daylight,

0:16:32 > 0:16:34the criminals caught on camera

0:16:34 > 0:16:37strolling away with her iPad and jewellery.

0:16:37 > 0:16:42What I hope is that CCTV helps catch who they are.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Because they won't have done it just once.

0:16:45 > 0:16:49CCTV of this nature is really helpful in the hunt for criminals,

0:16:49 > 0:16:53and the police will study the tape for clues to ID the men.

0:16:53 > 0:16:58The bottle will be analysed for DNA, and if a match is made,

0:16:58 > 0:16:59arrests will follow.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03There is a chance Sharon's stuff will be recovered,

0:17:03 > 0:17:07but until then, the list of losses keeps growing.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10You've noticed since we were here last night that more things

0:17:10 > 0:17:12- have gone missing.- Yes.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15My passports. My spare car key.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17I know. I never even thought to look for.

0:17:17 > 0:17:18These are all things that happen.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22You don't think about these things, do you, when you are in shock?

0:17:22 > 0:17:26There might be other stuff, but what I'm doing is, I'm writing it down.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30Would you say you're feeling similar to how you did last night,

0:17:30 > 0:17:32or is it sinking in a little bit more?

0:17:32 > 0:17:36I keep thinking they might come back for my TV, because it is new.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39I haven't even been out of the house today.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41I haven't been out for any milk or anything

0:17:41 > 0:17:45because you just daren't go out the house. I don't feel it is secure.

0:17:45 > 0:17:46It is an awful feeling,

0:17:46 > 0:17:49because you just think, are they going to come back?

0:17:49 > 0:17:53'Don't fret, Sharon. Neil's here with his box of security tricks.'

0:17:53 > 0:17:56I'll get on with fitting the room sensors,

0:17:56 > 0:17:58- if you want to fit all the door contacts.- Sure.

0:17:58 > 0:18:02One on the side door, one on the front door, and patio doors out back.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06Have you given Sharon a good telling off for not having an alarm on and working?

0:18:06 > 0:18:08It wasn't really her fault.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10It was there, but unfortunately it was broken,

0:18:10 > 0:18:13so I can't blame her for not turning it on.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15But she'll turn this one on, because it's easy to use.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18She can turn them on when they go to bed at night, as well.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Cos obviously, Sharon is quite worried about somebody coming back.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23All the stuff we are putting on, if they do come back,

0:18:23 > 0:18:26they will just walk away cos they'll know they will not get in.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29And are you going to stand at the back door with those muscles to protect her?

0:18:29 > 0:18:32Don't need to! I'm confident that everything we put up...

0:18:32 > 0:18:34Do you want him at your back door for the rest...?

0:18:34 > 0:18:36You can stand at my back door, love.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39THEY LAUGH

0:18:40 > 0:18:43An alarm like this costs around £200.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46It is the number one defence against burglars,

0:18:46 > 0:18:49and used in conjunction with window and door locks, it is going to

0:18:49 > 0:18:52make Sharon's house the Fort Knox of family homes.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55I'm going to fit this, it is called a Patlock.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57Just clamp it onto your handles,

0:18:57 > 0:19:00- push it, and that is all locked. - That's fantastic.

0:19:00 > 0:19:05- It's a good security device. That handle won't go down. Nice and secure.- That's fantastic.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10This is basically the same lock that was on the back door

0:19:10 > 0:19:12that was really easily snapped,

0:19:12 > 0:19:16so I'm going to replace it with a TS 007 three-star lock.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20And as you can see, it has got this little bit here,

0:19:20 > 0:19:24so if someone tries to get in, that bit snaps off first,

0:19:24 > 0:19:26and these are really the only locks

0:19:26 > 0:19:29that are recommended for these kind of plastic doors.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33'So if you're thinking of improving your door security,

0:19:33 > 0:19:37'remember the James Bond of locks, the TS 007,

0:19:37 > 0:19:41'which should also have a three-star kitemark on the packaging.'

0:19:41 > 0:19:43Getting a bit of a pro at these,

0:19:43 > 0:19:45you'll have to employ me as your sidekick.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48That's it, you're doing the locks, you're doing the alarms now.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50I could retire and just let you do it.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52You pretty much have retired.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55- Not seen you do anything since I got here.- Whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:19:55 > 0:19:56'Just kidding, Neil.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59'You are at least a couple of years off retirement.'

0:19:59 > 0:20:02- Right, job done! - Right, I'll carry on.- Out you go.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07Neil's created layers of security throughout the house,

0:20:07 > 0:20:10and he has got one more trick in his box.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13What you do, you leave it under your television,

0:20:13 > 0:20:16and when it starts to get dark, it automatically switches on

0:20:16 > 0:20:19and makes it looks like there's a television on inside your house.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21If we can turn the light off.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23So, from outside, that would look like our TV were on?

0:20:23 > 0:20:25- Yeah. Such a good trick, isn't it?- Very good trick.

0:20:25 > 0:20:30- And no-one will come in here trying to nick your TV if they think you're watching it.- No, they are not.

0:20:30 > 0:20:35'The fake TV costs around £25 and uses hardly any power.'

0:20:35 > 0:20:37- That's great. - Well done, Neil.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40'In just a few hours, Neil and I have made it near impossible

0:20:40 > 0:20:44'for a burglar to force entry, and Sharon already seems brighter.'

0:20:45 > 0:20:48Well happy! Very good!

0:20:48 > 0:20:49We'll find out later

0:20:49 > 0:20:53if we've done enough to improve Nick's security store.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55Until then, it's back to Swansea.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07There were no leads on the footprint found at the house,

0:21:07 > 0:21:11so despite the police's best efforts, the thief remains at large.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15But crime reduction officer Kevin Evans is here to make sure

0:21:15 > 0:21:16a break-in doesn't happen again.

0:21:18 > 0:21:22Kevin, thanks for being so determined to come all the way out here on such a horrible day.

0:21:22 > 0:21:26But clearly the burglar has been really determined, too.

0:21:26 > 0:21:31Unquestionably. There's a lot of force gone into forcing that rear door.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34It suggests they were probably here for some time.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36But of course, once you're at the rear of the premises,

0:21:36 > 0:21:39it is enclosed, it is private,

0:21:39 > 0:21:43and you've got very little natural surveillance.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47All you've got really is the chickens, who may say hello to you, I don't know.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51'Not exactly guard dogs, though, are they?'

0:21:51 > 0:21:52What can we do?

0:21:52 > 0:21:55There's numerous things we can do as regards to the lighting.

0:21:55 > 0:21:59Something like a PIR light that is activated by walking through a beam,

0:21:59 > 0:22:03because one thing most criminals don't like is

0:22:03 > 0:22:04a lot of light on themselves.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07Doors, make sure that shed doors are locked well.

0:22:07 > 0:22:11Consider a shed bar or door bar, as it's called.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14It reinforces the door.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18Overall, what would be your security assessment for this place, out of 10?

0:22:18 > 0:22:21Before doing anything else here, I've got to be honest,

0:22:21 > 0:22:24this security is probably around five or maybe six.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27I guess the problem here, then, is that the burglar can act with

0:22:27 > 0:22:30utter privacy and do it on the quiet.

0:22:30 > 0:22:31That certainly is a weak point.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34It gives privacy to Joe Criminal and gives him

0:22:34 > 0:22:38that extra few minutes he can spend trying to break in.

0:22:38 > 0:22:43Well, Joe Criminal won't stand a chance once our security team get busy.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47So, how have you been?

0:22:47 > 0:22:50Initially it was quite horrible leaving the house,

0:22:50 > 0:22:52cos especially once somebody has been in, you think,

0:22:52 > 0:22:57they know what is in the house now, will they come back and sort of take other stuff?

0:22:57 > 0:23:00But it is a real wake-up call.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03I think we were really lucky that they didn't do more damage,

0:23:03 > 0:23:04they didn't take more stuff.

0:23:04 > 0:23:09But a good shot across the bow, because we are much more aware now than we were before.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13And awareness needs to be followed by action,

0:23:13 > 0:23:16and for that, you need a man like Tony Berry.

0:23:16 > 0:23:21- Hi, Tony.- What's up, Dan?- How's it going, mate?- All right, bud. - Good to see you.- Nice to see you.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23So, what have you got for us today?

0:23:23 > 0:23:25We've got this here shed door bar.

0:23:25 > 0:23:30- Oh, yeah.- That goes on the outside of the shed and just hinges, covers the front.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33- That is to stop the door opening? - Yeah. That's right.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36We got a little sensor to go up in the corner somewhere,

0:23:36 > 0:23:39and it'll cover if anybody comes through the windows or anything.

0:23:39 > 0:23:44So if anyone turns up in the shed, somehow, that will see them and...

0:23:44 > 0:23:48- Set the alarm off, yeah. - Fantastic. Great.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Alarms outside and in.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53They are just as effective in old houses as they are in new ones,

0:23:53 > 0:23:58and they are pretty discreet, so won't ruin that period look.

0:23:58 > 0:24:03Surveillance is key, and security expert Graham Rees has got

0:24:03 > 0:24:05an outside light that does it all.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08When it is dark the sensor will activate, light will come on,

0:24:08 > 0:24:12camera will activate, and this then takes up to 60,000,

0:24:12 > 0:24:16- believe it or not, still shots on the SD card.- Oh, yeah?

0:24:16 > 0:24:20- It has also got a feature where it will record video.- Oh, yeah?

0:24:20 > 0:24:23So you can actually watch people walking around that area.

0:24:23 > 0:24:27- It is like an electronic night-watchman.- Exactly, yes.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30'A good investment at under £100.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32'But will all this be enough to impress Kevin

0:24:32 > 0:24:35'and increase the security score?'

0:24:35 > 0:24:38The bars on the shed, additional locks on the shed,

0:24:38 > 0:24:43we've got lamps up, and also a brand-new alarm.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45Big improvements made.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48What would be your security assessment for this property now?

0:24:48 > 0:24:51With all the additional work that has been added,

0:24:51 > 0:24:55unquestionably, in my opinion, this would go up to a nine.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58I'm pleased with that. Sandy and Rosie will be as well.

0:24:58 > 0:25:02- I'm sure they will have good times ahead of them here.- Brilliant.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06Now, what does Sandy think of her new security?

0:25:06 > 0:25:09It's great. I'm really, really impressed.

0:25:09 > 0:25:14I can't say I'm glad it happened, but it has been a really interesting and positive outcome.

0:25:14 > 0:25:20- Fantastic, that is what we're here for.- You have done a good job, then. Thank you.- No problem.

0:25:20 > 0:25:25So, Sandy and Rosie have got a beautiful 17th-century house here,

0:25:25 > 0:25:29but now that we have given them 21st-century security,

0:25:29 > 0:25:32their home is their castle once again.

0:25:34 > 0:25:39Back in Leeds, Sharon and Glen have heard from the police that a man called Sean Iceton

0:25:39 > 0:25:43has been jailed for three years and four months for two burglaries,

0:25:43 > 0:25:46including the one at their house.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49And it turns out he is a prolific career burglar who had previously

0:25:49 > 0:25:53served jail terms for carrying out hundreds of other break-ins.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57No further action was taken against a second man the police were questioning,

0:25:57 > 0:26:02but he was subsequently jailed for a separate, unrelated burglary.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05Although it is good news that the police have got their man,

0:26:05 > 0:26:08for Sharon, the break-in has left its mark.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12I understand now why people do get so badly affected by it

0:26:12 > 0:26:14and why they move house.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17No need for Sharon to move, as Nick is here to

0:26:17 > 0:26:20give his seal of approval on all the security improvements.

0:26:20 > 0:26:25We've got two alarm boxes on the front, one didn't work originally,

0:26:25 > 0:26:28now we've got one that does. Looks brand-new.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Front door lock is changed.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35The famous TS 007 standard. Good, excellent.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37So is the side door.

0:26:37 > 0:26:42The Patlock, which clamps the internal handles together,

0:26:42 > 0:26:45and it's invisible, which is a good deterrent.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49'But Neil couldn't sort everything in one day.'

0:26:49 > 0:26:51The access to the side and the back of the house,

0:26:51 > 0:26:55the gap is still there.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58Originally I gave it a five, now,

0:26:58 > 0:27:03with that gap still being there, I think we will up it to 7.5.

0:27:03 > 0:27:07The new locks and alarm will keep Sharon and Glen safe and sound for now,

0:27:07 > 0:27:12but a burglar barrier at the side would be ideal in the future.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14So what has Sharon got to say?

0:27:14 > 0:27:17- How are you feeling about things now?- I feel loads better.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20Loads better, because I feel more safe now

0:27:20 > 0:27:23because I know this alarm system is fitted.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26- I hope you'll be able to sit down and relax.- I am tonight.

0:27:26 > 0:27:27I've got something that might help you.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30- BOTTLES CLINK - Don't open them all at once,

0:27:30 > 0:27:33but I thought you might need these after a pretty hideous week.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37- Oh, thank you! Thank you. - That's all right.- That's lovely. That's brilliant.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39I can't believe they stole them in the first place,

0:27:39 > 0:27:43- so we had to get some back to you. Have a beer, sit down...- I will.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47- ..and relax.- I will. Thank you very much. Thank you.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49I'm pleased that we were able to make

0:27:49 > 0:27:52Sharon and Glen's home a bit more burglar proof.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55I'll drink to that. And it was great that Sandy got some of her

0:27:55 > 0:27:59personal items back, especially the stuff that belonged to her brother.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02- She would have been devastated to lose that.- That's it for now.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04- See you next time.- Bye-bye.
