0:00:08 > 0:00:10It doesn't sound good.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14With an average of 92 break-ins an hour, it is a huge problem.

0:00:19 > 0:00:24It never ceases to amaze me how much mess these burglars cause for people.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26For the victims of these crimes,

0:00:26 > 0:00:30it can take months or even years to overcome the trauma.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33How dare they?! Out of order! Out of order!

0:00:33 > 0:00:35I felt sick.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Somebody's been in my house.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41I don't want to drive up to a building and see it trashed again.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44But in this series, we are fighting back against the burglar.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Police, forcing entry! Police!

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Helping you to beef up your security...

0:00:49 > 0:00:50Here we go.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..while the police catch the criminals.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56How are you feeling about things now?

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Oh, I feel loads better. Loads better.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09Having your home burgled is an unbelievable invasion of privacy

0:01:09 > 0:01:13and it can have a profound affect on victims.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16In today's programme, we will see how a Leeds family cope

0:01:16 > 0:01:20when they are hit by a calculated gold thief.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23I just felt...

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Something is wrong.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Something is not right.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31And I am meeting a student who has had his pride and joy stolen

0:01:31 > 0:01:36to give him some tips on how to tell any future thieves, "On your bike."

0:01:36 > 0:01:39It was by very definition the heirloom of our family, really.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41I think people seem to think,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43"Oh, it's just a bike, it's gone, it won't matter."

0:01:43 > 0:01:46But somebody has taken away part of your history.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50They've stolen part of your life away, you know?

0:01:53 > 0:01:58West Yorkshire Police investigate more than 200 burglaries a week.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01A 999 call has just come in to the control room

0:02:01 > 0:02:04from a residence in Leeds, reporting another break-in.

0:02:30 > 0:02:35Manjit is a mum of three, with children ranging from five to 26.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38After returning home from a teatime visit to the doctor's,

0:02:38 > 0:02:42she and her young daughter, Ikjot, discover the break-in.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44I've just been called out to a burglary.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46All I know is that some jewellery has been taken.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49I think the police are already in there.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52About 600 worth.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Them big earrings, my husband just got me.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Earrings, OK. How many pairs?

0:02:57 > 0:03:00- About four pairs.- Four pairs.

0:03:01 > 0:03:06Manjit is clearly shaken up from having her valuable jewellery taken,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08which happens in 37% of burglaries.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11While she is talking to the police, I want to find out

0:03:11 > 0:03:14more from her elder son, Jatinder, about what has gone on.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18So your mum is just having a word with the police now.

0:03:18 > 0:03:19What has happened?

0:03:19 > 0:03:24They've come through the toilet and they have entered the house.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28They've tried to ransack the sofa and the kitchen area.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31- Then they've gone upstairs.- Yeah.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34And they have tried to go through the drawers.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37And it looks like they have just been trying to look for gold.

0:03:37 > 0:03:38As soon as they found the gold,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41they then tried to escape out the bedroom window.

0:03:41 > 0:03:42I didn't know,

0:03:42 > 0:03:46but there was some cash that Mum had left as well, that she keeps.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49That cash has gone missing as well. So he got lucky there, really.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52And then seeing what has been taken as well,

0:03:52 > 0:03:54it has shook her up a bit, yeah.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57And particularly the little one as well. She was scared.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00And like, normally, she'll just run around the house.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03And she is absolutely scared of going into a different room

0:04:03 > 0:04:05of the house without me being there, you know,

0:04:05 > 0:04:09so it is that kind of element, you know, that they don't realise.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11How are you feeling now?

0:04:11 > 0:04:14You live honestly with your friends and family and then you've got people

0:04:14 > 0:04:16that opportunistically just go and do this.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22The police waste no time in cracking on with the investigation.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26And inside the house, they are on the hunt for clues.

0:04:27 > 0:04:28So what have you found, then?

0:04:28 > 0:04:31On this occasion, very little, to be quite honest.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33They have come in through the toilet window downstairs.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36We powdered around the frame, we powdered the glass.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Probably wearing gloves in the winter months.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41Nothing to find. No footwear marks.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44This burglar may not have left any prints,

0:04:44 > 0:04:48but he has left a potential calling card - a mobile phone was

0:04:48 > 0:04:51found at the point of entry, and it doesn't belong to the family.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53Maybe fallen out of the burglar's pocket.

0:04:53 > 0:04:54We can live in hope, can't we?

0:04:54 > 0:04:57Now, that would be a severe stroke of luck!

0:04:57 > 0:04:59It would, yeah. There is DNA potential on the phone,

0:04:59 > 0:05:01obviously, from where it is held against the ear.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Possibly fingerprints on it as well.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05And the potential to send it to high-tech crime

0:05:05 > 0:05:08and have it downloaded and see what contacts are in there.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11This thief has really dropped himself in it.

0:05:11 > 0:05:16The mobile phone could be a vital clue in tracking down the lowlife.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18How did you feel when you came through the door, then?

0:05:18 > 0:05:21I just felt this is...

0:05:21 > 0:05:26Something is wrong. Something is not right.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30My husband is not here, so... He is in India.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34He is coming back tomorrow. But I just feel like...

0:05:37 > 0:05:41I don't know what to do, really, because at night-time,

0:05:41 > 0:05:43I'll be scared.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47The jewellery has so much sentimental value for Manjit.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51Much of what was taken was given to her at her wedding.

0:05:51 > 0:05:52All the bangles, bracelets

0:05:52 > 0:05:57and earrings were given to her by her parents and are irreplaceable.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Asian households are often targeted by criminals

0:06:01 > 0:06:03hoping to find high-value gold.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06And this thief has caused one hell of a mess.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10When I walked in, there was things everywhere.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13- Jewellery was in the books, you see, over there.- Oh.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Behind that...that cupboard.

0:06:16 > 0:06:21- It is a terrible state to see your own home looking like this.- Yeah.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Isn't it?

0:06:23 > 0:06:25It's terrible.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28Manjit now has to deal with the destruction

0:06:28 > 0:06:31left behind by the burglar.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34How do you feel about people who could do this?

0:06:34 > 0:06:39I just... I feel sorry for the youngsters nowadays, you know.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41I think they just need to...

0:06:41 > 0:06:43They are desperate for money,

0:06:43 > 0:06:47they are desperate for anything they can find.

0:06:47 > 0:06:53But, you know, what people go through after, they have no idea.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58After everything she has been through, it is a credit to Manjit

0:06:58 > 0:07:02that she can feel so sorry for the person who committed the crime.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05If it helps you out, it is part of our job

0:07:05 > 0:07:09to make people's home secure when they have been burgled.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12So we have got experts who can have a look at the place,

0:07:12 > 0:07:15try and make sure it doesn't happen again.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17We'll fix it up for you. Would that help you?

0:07:17 > 0:07:20Yeah, that will be good!

0:07:20 > 0:07:22- Fantastic.- Yeah. Oh...

0:07:22 > 0:07:26- That is nice.- Hopefully, it won't happen again.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31Helping Manjit feel secure in her own home is the least we can do.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37- Does it worry you now?- Yeah, I was worried, but I think I'm really...

0:07:37 > 0:07:39I'm really glad God sent you here.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41- Oh.- Yeah.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44I can't promise God sent me, the BBC sent me,

0:07:44 > 0:07:45but we will do our best for you.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47- Yeah.- I can promise you that.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50We will do our best, try and make it more secure.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54The police have done all they can at the scene for now,

0:07:54 > 0:07:56so they are heading back to the station.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59I'm worried about Manjit and her family.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02She is the one who discovered the burglary

0:08:02 > 0:08:04and it has really shook her up.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06She needs our help as soon as possible.

0:08:08 > 0:08:10I'm wasting no time with this one

0:08:10 > 0:08:13and I have asked crime reduction officer Nick Whitcombe

0:08:13 > 0:08:17for his professional opinion on Manjit's current security measures.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21Nick, we are just coming up to the property here.

0:08:21 > 0:08:22It is this one on the end.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24I know it is, it stands out.

0:08:24 > 0:08:29- If I was a burglar, I'd know that's the one I'd go for.- Why is that?

0:08:29 > 0:08:33Well, look at the height of all of the fences. Low, low, low.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36You come to this, it is seclusion.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39- It is like a big wooden cloak, isn't it?- It is.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42It is just the shield to do what you want to do.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Make it higher with wobbly things, trellising,

0:08:46 > 0:08:48things that won't hold body weight.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51They'd also be happy because if you look in that little hand box,

0:08:51 > 0:08:54it looks like it has been there for about 50 year.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57- Yeah.- And it looks like it doesn't get used.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59It doesn't look like it works, to be honest.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Oh, dear. Nick doesn't seem happy with what he has seen so far.

0:09:05 > 0:09:06Now, look where we are now.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08If they are in a panic, if they want to get away,

0:09:08 > 0:09:10where do they want to go?

0:09:10 > 0:09:15Within five yards, they have a choice of three different places to scoot.

0:09:15 > 0:09:16And that is just at the back.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19Then there is the front as well. It's just...

0:09:19 > 0:09:21It is a perfect dispersal point

0:09:21 > 0:09:25for somebody that wants to commit a burglary.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28I wonder what he will think about the inside of the house.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31OK, Nick.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33So, what do you make of the door?

0:09:33 > 0:09:38Excellent lock, three-star lock. Does it all work? No.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42The bottom lever works, which adds security.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46- The top one doesn't come out, so a bit of maintenance on that.- Right.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48Keys... How many would you like?

0:09:48 > 0:09:50You can drive away in the car if you want

0:09:50 > 0:09:53or you can open the back door or the front door.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57You could quite possibly hook them off with a stick or cane

0:09:57 > 0:09:59from the letter box.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03So the entry point was through the toilet window there,

0:10:03 > 0:10:07which backs onto a really secluded spot.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09It is in like a little alcove out there.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12They were happy enough when they got through the gate

0:10:12 > 0:10:13to be secluded.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17And then to duck down inside here, next to the little

0:10:17 > 0:10:20bunker that is there, oh, they'd just work away at that.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24It is the only window in the whole building that is made of wood.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27You can put so many screws in it, but the screws, they'll pull out,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29and it has done there.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32So overall, Nick, you have had a look around the property,

0:10:32 > 0:10:36what assessment score would you give it for security?

0:10:38 > 0:10:40From the outside...

0:10:40 > 0:10:42It's location is a problem.

0:10:42 > 0:10:43All those route-arounds.

0:10:43 > 0:10:48We can't do anything about that. It's location will lower it down.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50So...

0:10:50 > 0:10:54We'll give it a...five.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56- A five?- Five.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59- Now, that is attractive to a burglar.- It is.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04That is not exactly a score worth high-fiving.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06Time to break the news to Manjit.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09So, Manjit, it was a long night for you last night.

0:11:09 > 0:11:10How are you feeling now?

0:11:10 > 0:11:14Now I feel restless.

0:11:14 > 0:11:19Not, you know, not to go to sleep last night.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22I was all the time shaking.

0:11:22 > 0:11:27And then my daughter didn't sleep well, you know, she was up.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29Was she really worried by the whole idea?

0:11:29 > 0:11:34Yeah, she was asking me questions, why the people are here.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37- You know, why the policemen are there.- Yeah.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41We have had Nick around to assess the place for security.

0:11:41 > 0:11:43He only thought it was about five out of ten.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47- We can make your place a lot safer. - OK, that's nice, do it.

0:11:47 > 0:11:48Yeah.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52We really need to make a difference to that bad security score.

0:11:52 > 0:11:57And I know a man who can - security expert Neil Goldup.

0:11:57 > 0:11:58Hello, Neil.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03Hi, Neal. I've just been to a burglary

0:12:03 > 0:12:05and the family are pretty shaken up.

0:12:05 > 0:12:10And I got to be honest, their house is probably the most

0:12:10 > 0:12:12attractive to burglars in the neighbourhood.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15So it would be great if you could pop out

0:12:15 > 0:12:17and do another job for us, mate.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24Fantastic. Nice one, Neil. Cheers, mate.

0:12:26 > 0:12:27He is a good lad.

0:12:28 > 0:12:33We will be back later to find out just how that security upgrade goes.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35Meanwhile, I am in Swansea, South Wales,

0:12:35 > 0:12:39which is home to more than 240,000 people

0:12:39 > 0:12:43and has a student population of around 20,000.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45One of the students has just discovered

0:12:45 > 0:12:47he has been a victim of crime.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Officers have been dispatched to the scene of the crime to take

0:13:12 > 0:13:16a statement from 21-year-old victim Max.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- Do you mind if we come in, have a quick chat?- Yeah, sure.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24In here is...

0:13:25 > 0:13:27It was here.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30See, these are the two... Obviously, I think it was bolt cutters

0:13:30 > 0:13:33- that were used. This was on an Oxford chain that was...- OK.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36What we'll do is I'll just grab those off you now

0:13:36 > 0:13:39and keep them just in case there is any sort of potential

0:13:39 > 0:13:41forensic opportunities with them.

0:13:41 > 0:13:42So we'll go back in the house there,

0:13:42 > 0:13:45I'll get the rest of the chain off you.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47- Pop them in there for us.- Yep.

0:13:47 > 0:13:53- Was this door... Was this door open? - No. This bit was unbolted.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56- Yeah.- But it was actually closed.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59- As you can see, it has been... - Forced.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01It has been forced for sure, yeah.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04We will pop outside now and have a quick look to see

0:14:04 > 0:14:06if there is any more, maybe CCTV.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09Max has photos of his beloved bike

0:14:09 > 0:14:12to show the officers what they are searching for.

0:14:12 > 0:14:15- Would you be able to e-mail that to us?- Yes, definitely I will.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18It is easily identifiable by those features, really.

0:14:18 > 0:14:19It is just completely custom, you know.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21What we will do with your registration as well is

0:14:21 > 0:14:23we will put it up on the ANPR camera

0:14:23 > 0:14:26and then obviously it goes through the control room.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29Automatic Number Plate Recognition, or ANPR,

0:14:29 > 0:14:33is something the traffic police use to track down stolen vehicles.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36- Thanks for your help, guys. - See you, Max. Thanks.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40The police start their investigation with some door-to-door inquiries.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43Max is still left thinking about what happened.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46That is the... That is what was bolt-cutted off on this side.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49As you can see, it's not there now. That is where it would have been.

0:14:49 > 0:14:54And then it attached to this, which was then taken off by the officer.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57It was a 21st birthday present from my father.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01He built it and customised it for years,

0:15:01 > 0:15:04and it has been his pride and joy for a long time.

0:15:04 > 0:15:08You know, he's put a lot of money and thought and care into the bike.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11And he thought it would be nice for me to have something

0:15:11 > 0:15:15that he has made and put that much effort into for my 21st.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20It is clear that this bike has played a significant part in Max's

0:15:20 > 0:15:24upbringing and the relationship he has with his dad, Darren.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29I want to find out how the theft has affected them both.

0:15:32 > 0:15:37Part of Max's life. I mean, he's known the bike from birth,

0:15:37 > 0:15:40to being 21, to being given the bike,

0:15:40 > 0:15:43to then it being cruelly taken out from him.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47And how did you feel when Max told you that the bike had gone?

0:15:47 > 0:15:52Max really didn't want to tell me. He was very quiet.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54And I knew something was wrong.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56Previously, he has had accidents and that.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59And I have had to, you know, walk and see him laid on the floor

0:15:59 > 0:16:01and things like that, which has been pretty awful.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03But this was a different type of pain that he was in.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07And it was a pain because he was clearly in distress.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11And of course, I felt, you know, quite sorry myself

0:16:11 > 0:16:14but more for Max because... It's gone.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16And there is no... There's nothing you can do about it.

0:16:16 > 0:16:20You know, although I am his father, I can't do anything.

0:16:20 > 0:16:24You know, so you feel completely pointless almost.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27You are there, and what do you say? What do you say to your son?

0:16:27 > 0:16:28What can you say?

0:16:28 > 0:16:32It was always the prize amongst the pieces, you know,

0:16:32 > 0:16:35the bike to have, the bike to own, the bike to aspire to

0:16:35 > 0:16:37in a lot of ways for me.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40It was by very definition the heirloom of our family, really.

0:16:40 > 0:16:44- And that is the actual bike that we've lost.- You're kidding!

0:16:44 > 0:16:46No, that is actual bike there when he's only about six.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48You've been robbed of something.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50You've been robbed not just of the machine.

0:16:50 > 0:16:51I think people seem to think,

0:16:51 > 0:16:53"It's just a bike, it's gone, it won't matter."

0:16:53 > 0:16:57But somebody has taken away part of your history.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01They've stolen part of your life away, you know.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09Earlier in Leeds, I met Manjit and her family,

0:17:09 > 0:17:11who had just been burgled.

0:17:11 > 0:17:15Manjit was understandably devastated by having a stranger ransack

0:17:15 > 0:17:16her home.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20But this bungling burglar left a vital clue at the scene -

0:17:20 > 0:17:23a mobile phone was found that didn't belong to Manjit or anyone

0:17:23 > 0:17:25else in her family.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28West Yorkshire Police are now doing the detective work

0:17:28 > 0:17:31to try and find out who the phone belongs to

0:17:31 > 0:17:33in the hope it will lead them to the culprit.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37In this police lab, there is a mobile phone

0:17:37 > 0:17:39that has been tested for traces of DNA.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42And that is exactly what happened to the mobile phone

0:17:42 > 0:17:45that was found at Manjit's place.

0:17:45 > 0:17:49Looking for DNA on the mobile phone is the first link in the chain

0:17:49 > 0:17:51to finding out who it belongs to.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53The DNA analysis procedure

0:17:53 > 0:17:54takes some time.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56But if we do obtain a DNA profile,

0:17:56 > 0:17:58we can load it down to the national

0:17:58 > 0:18:01DNA database in an attempt to identify an offender.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05So before the police can even check for who is Mum and Dad

0:18:05 > 0:18:08in the address book, it has to go for DNA analysis.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10Yeah, the DNA analysis has to be done first.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Certainly the recovery of the DNA from the phone.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16Because all subsequent procedures will potentially

0:18:16 > 0:18:18contaminate the phone.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Hopefully, the DNA analysis of the phone will throw up

0:18:21 > 0:18:26a match on the police database so the bad guy can be found.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30Back at Manjit's, I've called in my trusty pal Neil Goldup

0:18:30 > 0:18:34to make the place as safe as ours is so she can rest easy at night.

0:18:34 > 0:18:39- Neil. Hi, mate.- I know you. - How is it going?- Yeah, not too bad.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42- Lovely day for it. - Yeah, it is nice and sunny.- Lovely.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44All right, so what have you got for us, then?

0:18:44 > 0:18:48Well, on this one, we're going to put some defensive stripping...

0:18:48 > 0:18:51strips on the spikes so they can't climb over the fence.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54- I can get on with that. - Yeah, that would be helpful.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57- Full alarm system.- Good. - Additional locks in the windows.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00And we're to put some trellising on the front there

0:19:00 > 0:19:04just to raise it up a bit, so it is not easily accessible at the top.

0:19:04 > 0:19:05Fantastic, let's do it.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10- There is a full box of strips, so... - Great.

0:19:10 > 0:19:12- Use as many as you need.- Great.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14There's your screws.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18- And I am off in where it's warm. - Lovely. I'll stay out here, eh.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21- Freezing cold.- Shout if you need me.

0:19:27 > 0:19:28It is only hard plastic,

0:19:28 > 0:19:32but it really is difficult to get your fingers on that.

0:19:32 > 0:19:34That is to put off any burglar.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Thank you.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45And those keys have been moved out of view from prying eyes.

0:19:47 > 0:19:52I can secure a full house while Dan is securing a small fence.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54And I'll be finished before he does.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58Ikjot and her friend are jumping for joy at the improvements

0:19:58 > 0:20:00we are making.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02This is thirsty work.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05Thankfully, Manjit is to the rescue with a brew,

0:20:05 > 0:20:07so we can take a quick break.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09LAUGHING

0:20:09 > 0:20:11- What is that? - What is it?- It's a rabbit!

0:20:11 > 0:20:13- Oh.- Oh, yeah, yeah.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17I couldn't tell because of the three mouths it's got.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19No, that's his hands!

0:20:19 > 0:20:21LAUGHING

0:20:21 > 0:20:23'Maybe I should stick to the day job.'

0:20:29 > 0:20:31Neil is installing a new alarm, putting the box

0:20:31 > 0:20:33in a more visible place.

0:20:33 > 0:20:38We are even putting up a CCTV camera as another deterrent.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40We are raising the fence with a wobbly trellis,

0:20:40 > 0:20:43making it difficult for burglars to get over.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46So, I reckon if we just cut out a little hole,

0:20:46 > 0:20:48just above the gate here,

0:20:48 > 0:20:52it will mean the trellis will go all the way across.

0:20:52 > 0:20:53There won't be any easy gaps.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56Because this is a fairly low gate. It'll look good.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05- I like that.- That looks well.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Just looking at that, the boundary of it, it's great.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09It is a good job, that.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12With the new security measures in place,

0:21:12 > 0:21:15fingers crossed we have boosted Manjit's security score.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19In Swansea, it is the late shift,

0:21:19 > 0:21:21and I am heading out with PC Simon Chapman

0:21:21 > 0:21:25to see how Automatic Number Plate Recognition is used.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28- Hello, Simon.- Hi, are you all right? - How are you doing?- Good.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34- So you are part of the roads policing unit?- Yeah, that's right.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37And all of the vehicles have got these funky little high-tech

0:21:37 > 0:21:40- screens and counters in them? - They do, yes.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43The Automatic Number Plate Recognition system is fitted

0:21:43 > 0:21:44to all of our vehicles.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48This nifty gadget can check so many details about a vehicle

0:21:48 > 0:21:52just from its number plate, like if it has tax, insurance,

0:21:52 > 0:21:55who the owner is and even if it has been stolen.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57And that is not all.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00We will have intelligence hits.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02So this is information that has been supplied to us

0:22:02 > 0:22:06sometimes about potential drunk drivers, that kind of information,

0:22:06 > 0:22:09and then it will allow us to target the right kind of person to ensure

0:22:09 > 0:22:11they are not committing motor offenses on our roads.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14- 'Attention.'- Oh, there we go, there is one come up now.

0:22:14 > 0:22:15Oh, so what is it saying?

0:22:15 > 0:22:17That is from the DVLA with the potential to say

0:22:17 > 0:22:19there is no keeper details held on that vehicle.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21So what does that mean? That car was...

0:22:21 > 0:22:23The car has got no keeper details.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26What I can see from it, though, is that the vehicle is insured

0:22:26 > 0:22:29and I can also see it has current and valid MOT on it.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32So we are able to assume that is a recent purchase.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34And probably find that the log book is in the post.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38- And I wouldn't go after that vehicle.- They are safe for now.

0:22:38 > 0:22:39They are safe for now.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42Max has lost his beloved motorbike.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45- Could you find it on this kind of system?- Yes, we could.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48The vehicle may well have driven past us,

0:22:48 > 0:22:50but we didn't know at that time that it was stolen.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52When we put the registration into the computer,

0:22:52 > 0:22:54it will then do a historic search

0:22:54 > 0:22:57and it may be that we do have a hit and then we will certify

0:22:57 > 0:23:00we've seen the vehicle on a particular road.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03And it will give us a far greater area to search.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06I can only hope that Simon and his team will spot Max's motorbike

0:23:06 > 0:23:08so it can be returned to him soon.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15Locking his beloved bike in a garage wasn't enough to stop

0:23:15 > 0:23:18thieves from taking it, so what else could Max do?

0:23:18 > 0:23:21I have called on the help of one cool rider -

0:23:21 > 0:23:25crime reduction officer Tony Pain for some top tips.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28If you are going to be securing something that is valuable,

0:23:28 > 0:23:31it is worth spending that little bit extra money

0:23:31 > 0:23:34to get a really good quality padlock

0:23:34 > 0:23:39and make sure that the first wall of defence is as secure as it can be.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41And what about once we get inside the garage?

0:23:41 > 0:23:43Should we be securing it like we do our home?

0:23:43 > 0:23:45- Should we put in an alarm or anything like that?- Absolutely.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47If you've got an alarm,

0:23:47 > 0:23:51it increases the chances that the offender is going to get caught.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55A bike alarm is good. You can put tracking devices on your bike now.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58So if the bike is moved, it will send you a message

0:23:58 > 0:24:01to your phone saying the bike is being moved.

0:24:01 > 0:24:06- You can track it in real time.- Is Max ever going to get his bike back?

0:24:06 > 0:24:10There are three main reasons why motorcycles get stolen.

0:24:10 > 0:24:16Joyriders, stolen to order and stolen to be stripped down.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19The chances of getting it back if it has been stolen for joyriding,

0:24:19 > 0:24:21they are reasonably high.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24If it has been stolen to order or it has been stolen to

0:24:24 > 0:24:27break into spare parts, it is going to be much, much more

0:24:27 > 0:24:31difficult for us to find the people responsible and get his bike back.

0:24:31 > 0:24:35I've got to ask, how do you secure your bike?

0:24:35 > 0:24:39My bikes are in a solid brick garage.

0:24:39 > 0:24:44It has an external independent alarm with ground anchors

0:24:44 > 0:24:47and I've got a CCTV system pointing at my garage door as well.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51- You really do practice what you preach, don't you?- I have to.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54Some great advice from Tony.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57The investigation into Max's missing bike remains ongoing.

0:24:57 > 0:24:58For now, he and his dad,

0:24:58 > 0:25:03Darren, are not letting the burglary dampen their passion for two wheels.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08Over in Leeds, there has been progress with the police

0:25:08 > 0:25:11investigation into the gold thief.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13The DNA recovered from the mobile phone dropped

0:25:13 > 0:25:17by the butter-fingered burglar has been matched to a profile

0:25:17 > 0:25:19on the police database.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22Detective Constable Nick Joyce and his team are making

0:25:22 > 0:25:25an early-morning knock at the door of suspect Ryan Ellis.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27We can open it for you.

0:25:30 > 0:25:31Hi, Ryan, you all right?

0:25:37 > 0:25:38We know him quite well.

0:25:38 > 0:25:42Known him for a couple of years. And he is always quite friendly.

0:25:42 > 0:25:47OK, Ryan, I am formally arresting you here. The time now is 7.53.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49OK, you have been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence

0:25:52 > 0:25:55if you don't mention something you later rely on in court.

0:25:55 > 0:25:56Anything you say may be given in evidence.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59The grounds for your arrest is a prompt and effective investigation.

0:25:59 > 0:26:02- We need to do a search, interview, you know that.- Yeah.- OK, all right.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04Just take you to the car now.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06Watch your head.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09When it came to court, Ryan Ellis,

0:26:09 > 0:26:12who is 18, was sentenced to eight months in a youth offenders

0:26:12 > 0:26:17institute and ordered to pay £100 to a victims' fund.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20And I am hoping to have some more good news for Manjit,

0:26:20 > 0:26:24as crime reduction guru Nick is about to reassess the security

0:26:24 > 0:26:25improvements we have made.

0:26:27 > 0:26:31So, overall, last time you gave it a five out of ten

0:26:31 > 0:26:34because there was so many weaknesses.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36How about now?

0:26:36 > 0:26:38Now, when that window is fixed, and it is going to be fixed,

0:26:38 > 0:26:41it stands out more than all the others. We'll give it an eight.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43- Eight out of ten?!- Eight out of ten.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47- Do you want to sit down?- Yeah. - Sit down.- Blown away by that.

0:26:48 > 0:26:52We have done the best with what we've got. We can't make it perfect.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54There is no way you can make it perfect.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56But it just stands out a fair more

0:26:56 > 0:26:59than the vast majority of other houses.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04I can't wait to tell Manjit the good news.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07So, Manjit, last time we got Nick round to have a look

0:27:07 > 0:27:11at the place and he only gave it a five out of ten for security.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13Now, you know, it was a bit of a woolly.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15We've got him back round,

0:27:15 > 0:27:17he has had a look around the place,

0:27:17 > 0:27:19and he has given it an eight out of ten.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23Now I will be... Inside, I'll be more confident to go out.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26Grateful to you, I feel a lot better, yeah.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30And the council have now changed that wooden window

0:27:30 > 0:27:32for a more secure one. Brilliant.

0:27:34 > 0:27:36It was great to see the difference in Manjit after

0:27:36 > 0:27:38the security upgrade.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41I am so pleased she feels safe in her own home again.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44I just can't believe she thought that you were a gift from God.

0:27:44 > 0:27:47I've got to be honest, I think she was still in shock at the time.

0:27:47 > 0:27:48And Max now knows

0:27:48 > 0:27:52the safest way to store any future bikes. That is it for today.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55- Until next time, from us... Bye-bye.- Ta-ra, now.
