0:00:02 > 0:00:05Every minute of every day, someone somewhere is getting burgled.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10Doesn't sound good.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14With an average of 92 break-ins an hour, it is a huge problem.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21It never ceases to amaze me

0:00:21 > 0:00:24how much mess these burglars cause for people.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26For the victims of these crimes,

0:00:26 > 0:00:30it can take months or even years to overcome the trauma.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31How dare they!

0:00:31 > 0:00:34Out of order. Out of order!

0:00:34 > 0:00:37I felt sick. Somebody has been in my house.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41I don't want to drive up to a building and see it trashed again.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44But in this series, we are fighting back against the burglar...

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Police forcing entry! Police!

0:00:46 > 0:00:48..helping you to beef up your security...

0:00:49 > 0:00:50Here we go.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..while the police catch the criminals.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56How are you feeling about things now?

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Oh, I feel loads better. Loads better.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00This is...

0:01:05 > 0:01:06Hello again.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10Now, it is never nice to get burgled, but sometimes it is made even worse

0:01:10 > 0:01:14when the things that are taken have a special value.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16It's just...it's heartbreaking.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21For Christmas, Pete bought me my flight.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25And now, I don't know. It could all be in jeopardy. I don't know.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Later on, I have got the case of a laptop,

0:01:28 > 0:01:33complete with confidential data, that was stolen from a flat.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36I want to know what we can all do to protect our computers.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38- They've had a good poke around in here.- Yeah, they have.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41- And you're going to have to kip in here tonight.- I'll be all right.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44As long as they get the window secured or something like that,

0:01:44 > 0:01:46it'll be all right.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50But first, Joan and Pete from Leeds had already had a very bad week

0:01:50 > 0:01:53when they returned home from a hospital appointment

0:01:53 > 0:01:54to find they'd been burgled.

0:01:56 > 0:02:01At just after mid-day, an emergency call comes in to the police in Leeds.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33When I arrive a short time later,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36Joan's already giving a statement to the police.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41Problem is round here, you know, we're like a little community here

0:02:41 > 0:02:45- with all old people and this will scare them now.- Yeah.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Grandmother-of-three Joan and her husband, Pete,

0:02:48 > 0:02:50were away for just a few hours.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53But in that time, an intruder somehow managed to squeeze through

0:02:53 > 0:02:56this tiny window to steal from their bedroom.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59- They have pulled it open, climbed in through it.- Right!

0:02:59 > 0:03:00Through that little window.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04Because there's a footprint on the windowsill there

0:03:04 > 0:03:06- where he's come in.- Right.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09And then he's done what he was doing and then gone out of that one.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11That was wide open.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13The police think the burglar may have been disturbed

0:03:13 > 0:03:16because he didn't get any further than their bedroom.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20Small consolation to a very house-proud lady.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Couldn't believe it.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25You know, there was just dirty footprints everywhere,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27there was drawers left open.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Of course, there were that I saw missing.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34And it was just the shock of walking in and seeing that.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37And all this mud everywhere.

0:03:37 > 0:03:38He'd been in the wardrobes.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40On the handles of the wardrobes there's dirt

0:03:40 > 0:03:43that he'd obviously got on his hands.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45And it was just everywhere.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48- Because your house is absolutely spotless.- Well, I hope so.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Joan and Pete - who are both in chronically ill health -

0:03:54 > 0:03:58moved to this bungalow to make life a little easier.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01But poor Joan, who suffers from both severe back pain

0:04:01 > 0:04:04and rheumatoid arthritis, is just realising that

0:04:04 > 0:04:09living on the ground floor comes with particular security concerns.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12I feel stupid for leaving the window open. I feel as if...

0:04:13 > 0:04:15..it's my fault.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18But then again, it isn't, because nothing gives anybody the right

0:04:18 > 0:04:23to come into my property, to my home and take anything.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26You know, no-one has that right.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29Two watches have been stolen, along with a crystal,

0:04:29 > 0:04:33which was a gift from a dear friend who passed away.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36But for Joan - who's about to fly out to see her family in Australia -

0:04:36 > 0:04:40the greatest concern is for her missing passport.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43When did you last see your daughter?

0:04:43 > 0:04:45- Three years ago.- So, you're desperate to see her, then?

0:04:45 > 0:04:48I am very... Sorry, I'm very desperate. Yeah.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50We've had a bad week.

0:04:51 > 0:04:52And, um...

0:04:55 > 0:04:58..it's just...it's heartbreaking.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00You know, this is a once-in-a-lifetime.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03We sold our property to move into this bungalow,

0:05:03 > 0:05:06because I was given it due to my disabilities.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10And of the proceeds that we made from the sale of our flat,

0:05:10 > 0:05:14for Christmas, Pete bought me my flight.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19And now, I don't know. It could all be in jeopardy. I don't know.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21I don't know what I'm going to have...

0:05:21 > 0:05:23I've just got to try and sort things out, but...

0:05:23 > 0:05:27..you know, it's just not fair. It's not fair.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31If only these people could see what they did.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Joan and Pete are at the end of their tether.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37The last thing they need right now is to have to cancel that passport

0:05:37 > 0:05:39and order another.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42I'm sure her neighbours are feeling concerned too.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44- This is a close community, isn't it?- It is, yeah.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46- People look out for each other here. - Yeah.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48- So, you're hoping that will help you. - We hope so.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51- He must have been quite small to get through that window.- Yeah.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53Looking at that, I would suggest so, yeah.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55So, looking, obviously, for a small chap.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57We've got a description from a neighbour, so that's being

0:05:57 > 0:06:01circulated for the lines of inquiry to follow, hopefully.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Let's hope that one of their neighbours can help the police

0:06:04 > 0:06:06find the intruder.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10But right now, I want to make Joan and Pete feel secure again.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12Well, what we would like to do for you,

0:06:12 > 0:06:14to make sure that you do feel safe again,

0:06:14 > 0:06:17is get our security guy to come round, have a chat with you,

0:06:17 > 0:06:21see whether you need an alarm fitting, some extra security lights,

0:06:21 > 0:06:22some extra locks on the windows.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Cos I don't like the thought of you getting upset

0:06:24 > 0:06:26- and feeling bad about it. - That'd be lovely, yeah.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29- We'll get this sorted.- Thank you very much. I appreciate it.

0:06:29 > 0:06:30We won't need the tissues.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Over 80% of burglary victims are emotionally affected

0:06:35 > 0:06:37by the experience

0:06:37 > 0:06:40and a significant number suffer panic attacks.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44But on top of that, Joan has the worry of cancelling her passport

0:06:44 > 0:06:46and hoping she'll get another in time to fly.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52She needs our help and the first step is a visit, a few days later,

0:06:52 > 0:06:55from Crime Reduction Officer Richard Thornton.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57He'll restore her peace of mind.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00Someone climbing through your bedroom window

0:07:00 > 0:07:01has really affected you, hasn't it?

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Of course, yeah. I haven't slept well.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07I keep breaking out in tears and...

0:07:07 > 0:07:10I never thought it would affect me...so much as it has.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12It has really frightened me.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15I am forever checking doors, checking windows.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17If we go out - is everything locked? You know, and...

0:07:19 > 0:07:21I want to go back to my flat.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25I want to go back to where we've just sold to come here.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28And I know I can't, because this is for my health

0:07:28 > 0:07:33that I have this bungalow, my mobility problems,

0:07:33 > 0:07:36where the other flat wasn't suitable.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40But I felt safe in there. I felt secure. I was upstairs.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Richard's almost finished his report.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48He just needs to look around the garden.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50High marks for the low hedges and fences,

0:07:50 > 0:07:53meaning that the back of the house is very visible.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56But the garden shed could be a problem.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59Wouldn't take a huge amount of force for me to pull that off.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03There's quite a lot of equipment in the shed, which is poorly defended

0:08:03 > 0:08:05- at this moment in time. - The shed is not very secure?- No.

0:08:05 > 0:08:10No, it's... The construction of it lends itself to be a target.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12And of course, the things that are inside it

0:08:12 > 0:08:14are a potential thief's paradise, shall we say.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17- To then use it to get into the house.- Of course, yeah.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19The means to commit crime.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Sounds like we need to do something about that, then.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24But what about the house itself?

0:08:24 > 0:08:27The main locks on the doors are a really good standard,

0:08:27 > 0:08:30so I am happy with the doors. That is not a problem.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33The locking systems on the windows is a very good locking system.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37When they are closed and locked shut, they are difficult to open.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40But of course our burglar sneaked in through the window

0:08:40 > 0:08:42left open to keep things aired.

0:08:42 > 0:08:43We've all done it!

0:08:43 > 0:08:47So, leaving windows open on a ground floor, just a big no-no?

0:08:47 > 0:08:49It is, really.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53But I think it would benefit greatly from an alarm system.

0:08:53 > 0:08:54The new alarm systems nowadays

0:08:54 > 0:08:57have got panic buttons on and things like that, so...

0:08:57 > 0:09:00Certainly if you've got elderly or vulnerable people

0:09:00 > 0:09:05who live in a property, it is like a little bit more reassurance as well.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08So, what would you score this property out of ten for security?

0:09:08 > 0:09:12I think at this particular point, we'd probably be looking at 6/10.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15So, some really good security points, this house,

0:09:15 > 0:09:16like the windows and the doors,

0:09:16 > 0:09:19- but still room for improvement. - Absolutely.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Bungalows can be a bit of a security challenge,

0:09:22 > 0:09:24but I really hope we can find a way

0:09:24 > 0:09:27to let in the fresh air that Joan loves.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31Time to make a call to a man who knows a lot about these things -

0:09:31 > 0:09:34security expert Neil Goldup.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36- 'Hello, Neil speaking.' - Hello, Neil, it's Keeley.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39- 'Hiya, Keeley.'- Hello. I am just at a couple's house.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43They have had a burglar sneak through an open window at the back

0:09:43 > 0:09:45and we could do with your help.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48There's quite a few things that I think you could install

0:09:48 > 0:09:50to help improve the security on this house.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Shall I bob the details over to the?

0:09:52 > 0:09:55'Yeah, do that and I'll get round to it straightaway for you.'

0:09:55 > 0:09:56Lovely. Thanks, Neil.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59- Thanks for your help. - 'OK, then.'- Bye.- 'Bye.'

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Although some burglars do prey on older folk,

0:10:03 > 0:10:08the statistics show that young people are more likely to be victims.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12Dan's just had news of a young man, elsewhere in the city,

0:10:12 > 0:10:14who's suffered a break-in.

0:10:14 > 0:10:15This is his call.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44It's a freezing cold night in Leeds, but that's not deterred

0:10:44 > 0:10:46the burglars. They have been at it again.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49I don't know too much about this break-in, but I'm going to go

0:10:49 > 0:10:52and catch up with the police now and find out what's been going on.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58The low-lives have really done a job here.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01IT worker Joe is struggling to come to terms with it.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05- What time did you return, Joe? - Just a few minutes past eight.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07- Just after eight o'clock?- Yeah.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11Joe has lived in this flat for less than six months.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Break-ins are not unknown in this area...

0:11:14 > 0:11:18but no-one expects burglars to smash their way in like this.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23A couple of people said moving into a ground floor flat

0:11:23 > 0:11:27round this area is probably not the best thing to happen, but...

0:11:27 > 0:11:29It looks like they made off with a gaming console

0:11:29 > 0:11:31and at least two laptops.

0:11:31 > 0:11:3627-year-old Joe works as a trainee in a government department

0:11:36 > 0:11:39and it's his work computer that he's most worried about.

0:11:39 > 0:11:41- It's a nuisance, isn't it, like? - It is.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44Especially when I've waited four and a half months for that laptop,

0:11:44 > 0:11:46had it two weeks and it is gone.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48I mean, you've got work data on there, I guess.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50The laptop is encrypted,

0:11:50 > 0:11:52so they won't be getting to anything that they shouldn't be.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Unless they're, like, computer geniuses,

0:11:55 > 0:11:57- and I'm guessing that they're not. - No.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- I mean, this is a government laptop, so...- Is it?

0:11:59 > 0:12:01..they're not getting through that encryption.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04Well, let's hope our secrets are safe, then.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06The smash-and-grab merchants who did this

0:12:06 > 0:12:08certainly don't strike me as criminal masterminds.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10They smashed a window. I don't know if you saw,

0:12:10 > 0:12:13but they've actually ripped the window out as well.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16They've not just crawled in, they've proper had a go at it.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18How do you feel about it?

0:12:18 > 0:12:22- Um...I'll live.- Yeah.- Erm...

0:12:22 > 0:12:26Not the best thing to happen in a day, obviously, but...

0:12:27 > 0:12:29- ..oh, well.- Mm.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Young Joe's putting a brave face on things,

0:12:32 > 0:12:34but I think he's quite shaken up.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36- They've been through all these drawers here?- Yeah.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39That's where everything's just been piled onto the bed.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43- They have done that?- Oh, yeah. It's not always like this, honestly!- No.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46It's tidier than my place. At least he's left your shin pads, anyway.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48- He's obviously not a footballer.- No.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50It's not nice, though,

0:12:50 > 0:12:53knowing that some grotty little individual has been round.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55It's not great. Um...

0:12:56 > 0:13:00Obviously people always say that's the worst thing, isn't it? So...

0:13:00 > 0:13:02Joe's clearly anxious,

0:13:02 > 0:13:05like any of us would feel after such a destructive break-in.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07They've had a good poke around in here

0:13:07 > 0:13:10and you're going to have to kip in here tonight.

0:13:10 > 0:13:11I'll be all right.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13As long as they get the window secured or something like that,

0:13:13 > 0:13:15it'll be all right.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17I just hope we can catch who did this.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20It certainly looks like they might have left a few clues

0:13:20 > 0:13:22amongst all this mess.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26Is that big black print in there any good to you at all?

0:13:26 > 0:13:28The carpet, you get very little detail.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31You don't get the same kind of detail you will get

0:13:31 > 0:13:34when it's on a nice surface like that.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37That almost looks like a forensic slide for a footprint.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40Every person's footwear will be unique to them

0:13:40 > 0:13:41because of the way they walk

0:13:41 > 0:13:44and the way they get little marks and nicks in their shoes.

0:13:46 > 0:13:47That's great evidence!

0:13:47 > 0:13:51It's amazing the burglar didn't cut himself on all that glass

0:13:51 > 0:13:53and leave some DNA behind.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56But it does seem there might be another great clue.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00- Can you see on that bar there? - Oh, yeah.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02We'll see where we are once we've got a chance

0:14:02 > 0:14:05to compare those marks with Joe's. If they're not Joe's,

0:14:05 > 0:14:08obviously those ones will get put forward for a search.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09Great stuff!

0:14:09 > 0:14:12I wonder if that toggle belonged to the burglar as well?

0:14:13 > 0:14:15CSI have come up with quite a few things

0:14:15 > 0:14:17that might aid the investigation,

0:14:17 > 0:14:21and we can help Joe make sure that this doesn't happen again.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23Listen, we have got some contacts

0:14:23 > 0:14:26- and people who know what they're doing.- Yeah.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29You know, if it helps you out, we can get them round,

0:14:29 > 0:14:32- see if we can get you a little bit sorted out.- That'd be brilliant.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35Yeah. Anything that can help would be fantastic at this stage.

0:14:35 > 0:14:36- That'd be great. Thank you. - Fantastic.

0:14:39 > 0:14:40So, it is almost midnight

0:14:40 > 0:14:44and Joe is a young man who has still got a lot to deal with.

0:14:44 > 0:14:45Hopefully tomorrow, though,

0:14:45 > 0:14:48we can start getting his security sorted out.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55Because it's a rented flat, we'll have to get Joe's landlord onboard

0:14:55 > 0:14:59for some of the measures required to protect the property.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01Joe's neighbours can help too.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03Before Joe heads off to work,

0:15:03 > 0:15:07there's a visit from Crime Reduction Officer Nick Whitcombe.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11- Broke in through that bottom left-hand pane?- Yeah.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13- Smashed it, I believe.- Yes.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17I think they've done that with a screwdriver.

0:15:17 > 0:15:21- And then forced the latches?- Yes.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24So, that's the point of entry. How did they get out of the front?

0:15:24 > 0:15:27I had a key in the back of the door.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30It's a common fault, is that, leaving keys in insides of doors.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34When people burgle houses, if they come in through small windows...

0:15:36 > 0:15:39..they don't like to use that as an escape route,

0:15:39 > 0:15:41so they will actually look for keys in doors.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43They'll look in drawers for keys

0:15:43 > 0:15:46so they can open doors before they start pinching things,

0:15:46 > 0:15:49so they can get out just in case you were to come back.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51I think we can all learn from that.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54- And that's the door that they've gone out of?- That's right.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56Your wood patio doors which had the key in.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59- That had the key in the back door. - Because you left the key in there.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01Nick knows how the offender's mind works

0:16:01 > 0:16:05and he's a bit surprised the burglar braved the alarm.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09All of the flats have got them, although they do a look a bit old.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12And what's more, Joe's wasn't switched on.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15- But it does work. - ALARM SOUNDS

0:16:15 > 0:16:17- It's working now.- Yeah, you see? It does work.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22Not necessarily at the right times, though.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24That alarm will need sorting.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26And there's plenty more we can do too,

0:16:26 > 0:16:30like securing those windows and growing spiky plants beneath them

0:16:30 > 0:16:32to discourage any would-be burglar.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36Dusk-till-dawn lighting will also help that.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38But it doesn't all have to cost money.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41It's a case of talking to your neighbours,

0:16:41 > 0:16:45letting them respond and react

0:16:45 > 0:16:48to anything that is going on suspicious.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Use them, use each other.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53Of course, they'd be the first people to respond

0:16:53 > 0:16:55to an alarm going off too,

0:16:55 > 0:16:58and Nick thinks this old thing has got to go.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00That's coming out and it's going to be

0:17:00 > 0:17:04a nice, brand-new, in-your-face box that looks like it's used.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07If it looks used and it looks like that,

0:17:07 > 0:17:09burglar will take notice of it.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12But the more Nick sees, the more worried he is,

0:17:12 > 0:17:16especially about the fact that our burglar was able to get so close

0:17:16 > 0:17:21and then smash his way in, without anyone seeing or hearing anything.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24You can't get away from the windows and the access to the back.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27It's got everything that a burglar wants.

0:17:27 > 0:17:28Thanks, Nick.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32It looks like Neil, our security contractor,

0:17:32 > 0:17:34is soon going to be very busy.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39But right now, in a different part of Leeds,

0:17:39 > 0:17:41he's got Joan and Pete's house to fix.

0:17:44 > 0:17:48The retired couple were burgled in the few short hours

0:17:48 > 0:17:51they were away at a hospital appointment.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54I knew straightaway. I said, "Pete, somebody's been in."

0:17:54 > 0:17:56I walked in, I just couldn't believe it.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59You know, there was just dirty footprints everywhere,

0:17:59 > 0:18:01there was drawers left open.

0:18:01 > 0:18:06But the most upsetting thing for Joan was the loss of her passport,

0:18:06 > 0:18:07just as she was about to fly out

0:18:07 > 0:18:11to see her daughter and grandchildren in Australia.

0:18:11 > 0:18:12We've had a bad week.

0:18:13 > 0:18:14And, um...

0:18:17 > 0:18:19..it's just...it's heartbreaking.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24Joan was forced to cancel her passport.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28But today, she wants to show me something

0:18:28 > 0:18:30she's just found under the bed.

0:18:31 > 0:18:34- KEELEY GASPS Oh.- My travel case.

0:18:34 > 0:18:38- With...- My passport, never been used.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40Which, of course, I've cancelled.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42- Oh, no! Of course. - As per police instructions.

0:18:42 > 0:18:47- And it was here all along under the bed.- Yeah, it was under the bed.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51It looks like it may have got there when the burglar was disturbed.

0:18:51 > 0:18:52But Joan's other news is that

0:18:52 > 0:18:55her daughter is now coming home to visit instead.

0:18:56 > 0:19:01So, I've cancelled my flight, which I've lost money on it anyway.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05Cost of the passport has gone. That is another £72.50.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09And for what? For what he took, it's just...

0:19:09 > 0:19:11If he'd have knocked on my door, I'd have given him 20 quid.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16I think Joan might be feeling a little bit better.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19A great pastry cook, she's baked a few delicacies for Neil.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21What a lucky man!

0:19:21 > 0:19:24You have been busy. SHE LAUGHS

0:19:24 > 0:19:27- Aye. Very busy.- These look amazing!

0:19:27 > 0:19:28Those should help fuel the work,

0:19:28 > 0:19:32with the recommended alarm a top priority, of course.

0:19:32 > 0:19:33Having something like an alarm is

0:19:33 > 0:19:36- really going to make a massive difference.- It is.

0:19:36 > 0:19:37The only thing I am worried about is

0:19:37 > 0:19:40there's a lot of crumbs going into this alarm.

0:19:40 > 0:19:41I hope it's not going to break it!

0:19:41 > 0:19:43Shall I help you? Look at him!

0:19:43 > 0:19:45You take a load off, me and Joan will sort this out.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48- I will. Thanks. - KEELEY LAUGHS

0:19:48 > 0:19:51When it's finally fitted, the wireless alarm

0:19:51 > 0:19:52will help protect the house,

0:19:52 > 0:19:56and with the help of motion sensors, Pete's plastic shed as well.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59What I'll do, I'll put a PIR, a sensor in this.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02Anybody who breaks into here, it's going to set your house alarm off.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05- Right.- I'll get this put on for you.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10And there'll be a little bit of extra help for the hinges too,

0:20:10 > 0:20:13adding a few clutch screws for extra security.

0:20:14 > 0:20:15- They only go in one way.- Yeah.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17Once you get them in, you can't get them out again.

0:20:17 > 0:20:22Now, remember how the burglar entered through this tiny bedroom window?

0:20:22 > 0:20:25Joan's promised to keep it closed and alarmed when she's out,

0:20:25 > 0:20:27but Neil's working on a way of getting

0:20:27 > 0:20:29a little fresh air in for her.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32- What I'm going to fit is a laser beam.- Ah, OK.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35So, if anybody opens this window, puts their arm through,

0:20:35 > 0:20:36even when it's left open...

0:20:36 > 0:20:39Only when they're at home, though. Not when they're out.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41If it is left open, soon as anybody trips this laser beam,

0:20:41 > 0:20:44- it is going to set the alarm off and it will alert them.- OK.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47- So, these match up, one either side? - Yeah.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51I've put this one on this side, and we'll put one on that side.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53- About there?- Yeah.

0:20:53 > 0:20:54Keep going, keep going.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57That's great.

0:20:58 > 0:20:59We're on.

0:20:59 > 0:21:03I'm sure that Neil's looking forward to his next pastry break, but

0:21:03 > 0:21:07meanwhile, Joan's got to be the first person to see our lasers in action.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09MUSIC: Mission Impossible Theme

0:21:09 > 0:21:12This is what will happen if someone tries to break in there now.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14- ALARM SOUNDS - Oh, my goodness!

0:21:14 > 0:21:17Not even Tom Cruise himself could squeeze through there.

0:21:17 > 0:21:21It's unbelievable, that alarm system. Absolutely unbelievable.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24- You're really impressed with that back window.- Oh, God, I am, yeah.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26I have never heard such a racket in all my life.

0:21:28 > 0:21:29Great work, Neil!

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Joan has been so good to us today.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37For a feisty character, I really think she's been knocked by this.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40But already, she seems to be back to her normal self.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Let's hope that Richard is equally as impressed.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48Although Joan's passport wasn't stolen after all,

0:21:48 > 0:21:51the break-in still caused her a lot of anxiety.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56But young Joe's definitely had two laptops and a games console

0:21:56 > 0:21:58pinched from his flat,

0:21:58 > 0:22:03and the burglars left both footprints and fingerprints behind.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05- Can you see on that bar there? - Oh, yeah.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Hopefully those prints will help police identify the intruder.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Computer theft is rife these days,

0:22:14 > 0:22:17the cause of almost 40% of burglaries.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21So, I've come to Leeds Beckett University

0:22:21 > 0:22:24to look at hi-tech solutions to the problem.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27So, what can you do to help you trace your laptop or tablet

0:22:27 > 0:22:28once it is gone?

0:22:28 > 0:22:31Add extra security, such as UV pens.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33Even things like etching and ceramic etching,

0:22:33 > 0:22:35which leave a permanent mark on the device.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38Tablets have a IMEI number -

0:22:38 > 0:22:40International Mobile Equipment Identity Number,

0:22:40 > 0:22:42which uniquely identifies every single tablet

0:22:42 > 0:22:44and every single mobile phone.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47That is sent out every time it connects to the network.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50But the best news is that these clever bits of technology

0:22:50 > 0:22:53can help us to find them after they've been stolen.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57So, realistically, what can some of these tracing things do?

0:22:57 > 0:23:00Well, they can pinpoint your device to a relatively accurate area

0:23:00 > 0:23:03simply by going on to the application

0:23:03 > 0:23:06and selecting which device you're looking for.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09- So, in this case, this particular tablet.- Hm.

0:23:09 > 0:23:13It will then automatically zoom in and it will show us where we are.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16Great. So, even if this thing was on the other end of the town,

0:23:16 > 0:23:18it would tell you on your...?

0:23:18 > 0:23:20As long as it was connected to the internet, yes,

0:23:20 > 0:23:23- it would give us exactly where it was.- That's unbelievable.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28So, we can now make it much tougher for computer crooks,

0:23:28 > 0:23:30although they won't give up.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33Joe's laptops are still missing,

0:23:33 > 0:23:38but thankfully, Neil's here to make sure he won't be targeted again...

0:23:38 > 0:23:41with special attention being paid to the windows!

0:23:41 > 0:23:43These are what they call snap locks.

0:23:43 > 0:23:45Good thing about these, you can never forget to lock them.

0:23:45 > 0:23:49Because that goes onto the window, this screws onto the frame

0:23:49 > 0:23:51and when it's closed... CLICKING

0:23:51 > 0:23:53it catches, so you can never forget to lock them.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55You need the key to open them.

0:23:55 > 0:24:00This'll make Joe feel safer. Common sense stuff, but it works.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02You could have the best lock in the world,

0:24:02 > 0:24:05but if it's not screwed on right, it's no good to you.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10Plus, we're fitting the alarm that Nick recommended.

0:24:10 > 0:24:11Has to be switched on, though!

0:24:12 > 0:24:14Come on.

0:24:14 > 0:24:15I'll make you a cup of tea.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17DRILLING Excellent.

0:24:28 > 0:24:32- There you go, Neil. - Oh, cheers, Dan. You're a star.

0:24:32 > 0:24:36I'll have a few sips of this and you can fit the alarm.

0:24:36 > 0:24:37Very handy.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Do you want my best side?

0:24:39 > 0:24:41Good job I polished this this morning.

0:24:43 > 0:24:44That's great, is that.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49I don't think any burglar will be risking this one.

0:24:49 > 0:24:50Want to test it?

0:24:53 > 0:24:56ALARM SOUNDS That's it.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59I wonder what Joe makes of it all.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01We've done our best to make sure that your place

0:25:01 > 0:25:03is the least attractive on the block for a burglar.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06- So, you've got your new locks there.- Yeah.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08And you've got your burglar alarm too.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10I love the burglar alarm. The remote control,

0:25:10 > 0:25:12in terms of actually putting it on and off,

0:25:12 > 0:25:14it's such an easy thing to do, such a natural thing to do,

0:25:14 > 0:25:17rather than being a problem or something to remember.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19And, yeah, that's been really good.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22And you've got your motion sensors here, so anyone creeping around...

0:25:22 > 0:25:25- Yeah, absolutely. - ..ping, and it will go off.- Yeah.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27I mean, the big thing for me

0:25:27 > 0:25:29is having the sensors on the doors and windows as well.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31So, that point of entry is protected,

0:25:31 > 0:25:33which I didn't have before.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36- That's given me a lot of security... - Mm.- ..peace of mind.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40It sounds like Joe feels a lot more secure.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42- One for your health. - All right.- Cheers.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45Although for flats like his, it's up to all the residents

0:25:45 > 0:25:48to get together and make it tough for the burglars.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58It's now time for our Crime Reduction Officer Richard

0:25:58 > 0:26:01to take another look at Joan and Pete's.

0:26:01 > 0:26:05Let's hope we can improve on that score of just six!

0:26:05 > 0:26:07Starting out with Neil's Mission Impossible lasers.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10So, when she goes out, she closes the window,

0:26:10 > 0:26:12but when she's in, he's put in a little trick.

0:26:12 > 0:26:16I've got Pete outside lurking, pretending to be a burglar.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Pete, come and try and burgle us.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21The burglar's coming through.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23- ALARM SOUNDS Oh!- Ah.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25- Great. That's good. - Impressed?- Yeah, yeah.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28Well, that went well. Now for the rest of the improvements.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30We've got sash jammers on the windows,

0:26:30 > 0:26:33we've got an alarm which Joan is absolutely chuffed with.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35The shed has been given a bit of a makeover as well.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38We have got some clutch screws in the hinges

0:26:38 > 0:26:40and there's a sensor from the alarm in there.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42There's going to be a security light fitted too.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44You must be impressed with this.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46Yes, I am. I'm delighted. It is a really good job.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48I'm not going to ask you for your score just yet.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51We'll sit down with Joan. She is dying to know what it is.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54So, you have a little think and we'll go and catch up together.

0:26:54 > 0:26:55OK, that's great.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57Now, I know you are chuffed to bits

0:26:57 > 0:26:59with what Neil has done for us here, aren't you?

0:26:59 > 0:27:02Oh, it is absolutely amazing.

0:27:02 > 0:27:07The amount of relief it has given me to know that the property's secure,

0:27:07 > 0:27:10not only when we're out of it but also when we're in it.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12The one in the window in the bedroom...

0:27:13 > 0:27:16..where, you know, somebody puts their hand through,

0:27:16 > 0:27:19like you did the other day, frightened the life out of me.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22- KEELEY LAUGHS - It goes off like a banshee.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25Marvellous. I mean, anybody is going to hear that. It's fabulous.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28Now it is time for the all-important score off this man.

0:27:28 > 0:27:29Come on, be generous.

0:27:29 > 0:27:33Certainly, definitely a very, very good nine.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36- That'll do. That'll do! I'm happy with that.- Great, that's good.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39- He is pretty stingy with his figures, so I think you can be...- Yeah.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42- That is like our 12, Joan, so I think...- I'm sure it is.

0:27:42 > 0:27:43- ..he's pleased.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47- No-one is getting in here. Nobody.- Good.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50No-one was arrested in connection to the burglaries

0:27:50 > 0:27:52at Joan and Joe's, but...

0:27:52 > 0:27:55It is great to see Joan looking a bit more like her old self.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58And hopefully she will be able to use that new passport

0:27:58 > 0:28:00for another trip to see her grandchildren soon.

0:28:00 > 0:28:01I hope so.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04And the improvements we have made to Joe's flat

0:28:04 > 0:28:08prove that you can live on the ground floor and still be secure.

0:28:08 > 0:28:09So, burglars beware.

0:28:09 > 0:28:13We're going to do everything that we can to make your life difficult.
