0:00:02 > 0:00:05Every minute of every day, someone, somewhere, is getting burgled.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10Doesn't sound good.

0:00:10 > 0:00:15With an average of 92 break-ins an hour, it's a huge problem.

0:00:19 > 0:00:24It never ceases to amaze me how much mess those burglars cause for people.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26For the victims of these crimes,

0:00:26 > 0:00:30it can take months or even years to overcome the trauma.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31How dare they?

0:00:31 > 0:00:34Out of order, out of order!

0:00:34 > 0:00:35I felt sick.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Somebody's been in my house.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41I don't want to drive up to a building and see it trashed again.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44But, in this series, we're fighting back against the burglar...

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Police, forcing entry! Police!

0:00:46 > 0:00:48..helping you to beef up your security...

0:00:49 > 0:00:50Here we go.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..while the police catch the criminals.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56How are you feeling about things now?

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Oh, I feel loads better. Loads better.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00This is Break-In Britain...

0:01:05 > 0:01:08Hello there. Now, being burgled is never fun

0:01:08 > 0:01:11but if you are elderly and come home to find that your house

0:01:11 > 0:01:14has been ransacked, it can be terrifying.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Today we are helping Granville and May, who were left shaken

0:01:17 > 0:01:21to the core when thieves broke into their home and stole precious items.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23It's terrible.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27She is upset.

0:01:27 > 0:01:28Somebody has been in your house.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32And I'm in South Wales where efforts to open a much-needed nursery school

0:01:32 > 0:01:36for the local community have been jeopardised by thieves.

0:01:36 > 0:01:40Our job is to look after these kids and we can't.

0:01:40 > 0:01:45I can't do that because I can't keep myself and that building safe.

0:01:48 > 0:01:53In 9% of burglaries, the thieves get in by smashing a door panel.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58At West Yorkshire Police control, a 999 call is coming in.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24It sounds like there has been a burglary in broad daylight.

0:02:24 > 0:02:25Police are already here.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28I'm going to go and find out what has happened.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34The victims of this burglary are pensioners Granville and May.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Along with one of their daughters, Claire,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39they are trying to piece together what has been stolen

0:02:39 > 0:02:42so they can complete a statement for the police.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45The main thing that is missing is a safe full of jewellery.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Whereabouts is the safe, please?

0:02:48 > 0:02:51Front bedroom, inside wardrobe.

0:02:51 > 0:02:533-D DVD player.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55- What colour?- Black.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Golden wedding anniversary stuff.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00You know, like picture frames and cups.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05The hours following a break-in and can be traumatic and chaotic

0:03:05 > 0:03:09and, in this case, May is really shaken up.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14Daughter Hayley thinks her mum may well be in shock at the moment.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16Is she going to be all right, do you think?

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Probably not, no.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23I think this will take... This will knock her for six.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26It's being in the house, you know,

0:03:26 > 0:03:30only finding out weeks prior a friend of ours

0:03:30 > 0:03:33has been burgled and died.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36You know, she is frightened. It is frightening.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41The family are really pulling together during this

0:03:41 > 0:03:44difficult time and there is still a lot of clearing up to be done.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50So, this is the sight they came home to and I know from in that

0:03:50 > 0:03:53wardrobe is where the safe was with all the jewellery in.

0:03:54 > 0:03:59And, also, a big bag of presents from their 50th wedding anniversary.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01Gone. Sickening, isn't it?

0:04:04 > 0:04:07The thieves got in at the back of the property and it seems they

0:04:07 > 0:04:12used a garden tool to prise open the door panel before booting it in.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15It must have been a noisy burglary,

0:04:15 > 0:04:17so did the neighbours hear anything?

0:04:17 > 0:04:20The police are carrying out house-to-house enquiries.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24- Just a quick one. Did you see or hear anything...- No.- ..next door?

0:04:24 > 0:04:27I heard some banging but I just thought it was them next door.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30So a neighbour did hear some banging.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34May is still too distressed to talk to us so, after Granville has

0:04:34 > 0:04:37finished his statement to the police, I catch up with him.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40- So, how are you feeling at the moment?- Erm...

0:04:41 > 0:04:45Not very good, like. Do you know that I mean?

0:04:45 > 0:04:47It happened, didn't it? It's terrible.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51Erm... She's... She's upset.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56Somebody has been in your house and that is really...

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Things what's gone can be replaced but...

0:05:01 > 0:05:03It could have been worse.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05Because your wife has gone cold with the shock.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08This has just shook her up a lot.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12Well, if it helps you out, we have got our security experts,

0:05:12 > 0:05:14- people who know how to keep burglars out.- Yeah.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18They can pop round, have a look where your weak points are,

0:05:18 > 0:05:23- fix things up so that hopefully burglars can't get back in.- Yeah.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26- Thank you very much.- No problem.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28I'll get on the blower to the boys.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33So, Granville seems to be made of fairly tough stuff

0:05:33 > 0:05:37but May, I think she is going to struggle to get over this.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40But at least if we can get their security sorted out,

0:05:40 > 0:05:42we can make a start.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49It is the next day

0:05:49 > 0:05:52and time to get crime reduction officer Nick on the case.

0:05:52 > 0:05:57But before he even started security assessment, he spotted footprints.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00They have left footprints on the other side.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04If you have a look, you can see some little indentations -

0:06:04 > 0:06:07some marks, some circles of the footprint pattern.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10- It's like hexagons, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13The footprint pattern on the right-hand side,

0:06:13 > 0:06:16there is a small shape which I would expect to have

0:06:16 > 0:06:19the name of the manufacturer of the shoe in it.

0:06:20 > 0:06:25- But we need to cover them up.- Right. - Let's just preserve the evidence.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28'The rain is absolutely lashing it down,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31'so let's get inside and have a look where the safe used to be.'

0:06:31 > 0:06:34So, Nick, this is where the safe was taken from.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Is that a classic place to leave it?

0:06:36 > 0:06:38Just because you have got your little safe,

0:06:38 > 0:06:40your little hard tin box, if you shove everything in it,

0:06:40 > 0:06:44all that is is a metal handbag to be picked up and run off with

0:06:44 > 0:06:47and you lose everything at once, including your safe.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49They have got to be screwed down,

0:06:49 > 0:06:55they have got to have Rawlbolts into concrete, you've got to make

0:06:55 > 0:07:01sure that it is hidden away somewhere better than the back of a wardrobe.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03'So if you are going to get a safe, get a decent one

0:07:03 > 0:07:06'and make sure it is securely fixed.'

0:07:06 > 0:07:09So, Nick, you've had a good look around. What do you make of it?

0:07:11 > 0:07:12It is pretty standard.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16There are glaring mistakes - the fact that there is no alarm,

0:07:16 > 0:07:20front door lock needs changing.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24In reality, I would suggest that that door needs upgraded.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Overall, what would be your security assessment

0:07:27 > 0:07:29for this place out of ten?

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Security assessment out of ten...

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Four.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35'Blimey, only four out of ten?!

0:07:35 > 0:07:37'Our security contractor, Neil Goldup,

0:07:37 > 0:07:40'has his work cut out sorting out the problems here.'

0:07:40 > 0:07:42This is the one.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44'So I had better give him a hand.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47'And, while I do, it is over to Keeley in South Wales.'

0:07:50 > 0:07:52The average cost of damage to a property

0:07:52 > 0:07:55after a burglary is £358.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00But the 999 call coming into Bridgend Police control sounds like it

0:08:00 > 0:08:02will cost a lot more than that.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29This building was being refurbished to turn it into a nursery

0:08:29 > 0:08:30to serve the local community.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34But thieves have smashed a second-floor window and it seems

0:08:34 > 0:08:38spent an entire weekend ripping out copper pipes,

0:08:38 > 0:08:40which has left the ground floor flooded.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Point of entry is in that room just there.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45The room they've come in through has actually got an alarm system

0:08:45 > 0:08:47fitted in that room and the first thing

0:08:47 > 0:08:50they have done, it would appear, is smash the alarm system.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53The fact, obviously, that that alarm hasn't been activated

0:08:53 > 0:08:55suggests that it hasn't actually been

0:08:55 > 0:08:59connected up to an alarm company as yet. It is a newly-fitted alarm.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02The owner at the moment is concerned that it is going to put her

0:09:02 > 0:09:04out of business because this is the second time and it is a few

0:09:04 > 0:09:07thousand pounds' worth of damage again, on top of the original.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13The victims of this burglary are owner Sara,

0:09:13 > 0:09:16who runs this other nursery nearby,

0:09:16 > 0:09:20her son Zac and his friend Rhys, who both work for her.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23They have been helping to refurbish the new nursery premises

0:09:23 > 0:09:26but this break-in has set their plans back big-time

0:09:26 > 0:09:28and has left them dumbfounded.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32We have worked quite hard over the last month or so.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Particularly with the last break-in, where everything that we had stored

0:09:36 > 0:09:39was damaged, and we tried to pick ourselves back up

0:09:39 > 0:09:41and carry on again.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44- Then this happens. - Now someone has done it again.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46Shall we have a look upstairs?

0:09:47 > 0:09:50And if the damage downstairs seems bad,

0:09:50 > 0:09:53what greets them upstairs is even worse.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57The floors have been ripped out.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Any piping that's underneath has been taken.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03The damage again here...

0:10:05 > 0:10:09Not only is it visually quite bad but, once you start looking

0:10:09 > 0:10:11at the pipes that have been removed,

0:10:11 > 0:10:15it is quite a substantial amount.

0:10:15 > 0:10:16It is really devastating.

0:10:18 > 0:10:22The break-in and the huge amount of damage has stunned Zac and Rhys.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25They are going to have to dig deep to find the energy

0:10:25 > 0:10:29to start the renovation all over again.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32This particular burglary has really hacked me off.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35The lads have put in endless hours of work here

0:10:35 > 0:10:37and the burglars have just come along and trashed the place.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39And what for?

0:10:39 > 0:10:42A bit of piping.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46But there is one good bit of news - despite the massive flooding,

0:10:46 > 0:10:51the CSI team have found a clear footprint on a piece of plasterboard.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54These are going to be the offender's footprints.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57What we'll do with these is get these looked at

0:10:57 > 0:10:58by our footwear team.

0:10:58 > 0:11:03They will identify the trainer and then we can look at who has been

0:11:03 > 0:11:07arrested in the last six months wearing that particular trainer.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11So it gives us a list of names. Works as intelligence, really.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15While both Zac and Rhys are trying to see a way forward

0:11:15 > 0:11:19for the new nursery, owner Sara is not so sure.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22The boys haven't let her see the latest damage

0:11:22 > 0:11:24as they think it would be too much for her to bear.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28- Do you think it will open? - It has got to go open.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31It has got to open, otherwise this place will have to shut.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35It is as simple as that because this place is funding it.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39So you, at the moment, are paying out for something

0:11:39 > 0:11:41that you aren't seeing any...?

0:11:41 > 0:11:44Yeah, I have been paying out for the last eight months.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46That's eight months' worth of staff wages,

0:11:46 > 0:11:50eight months' worth of rent on top of a building that is sitting there

0:11:50 > 0:11:53doing nothing that is costing me thousands of pounds a month

0:11:53 > 0:11:55that I've got to fund.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57- Are you scared?- Yeah.

0:11:57 > 0:12:02Every time you try and do something and then...

0:12:03 > 0:12:06I mean, how scared you get when you drive up to a building every day

0:12:06 > 0:12:09and you don't even know what's going to be there.

0:12:09 > 0:12:10They won't let me go and see it.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13It's that damaged, they won't let me go and see it.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17Our job is to look after these kids and we can't.

0:12:17 > 0:12:22I can't do that because I can't keep myself and that building safe.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25How do I expect you to bring your child to a building

0:12:25 > 0:12:26I can't keep safe?

0:12:26 > 0:12:29We have got a security expert which we would like

0:12:29 > 0:12:30to take round to the premises

0:12:30 > 0:12:33because there's obviously something wrong with the security there.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36If you will let us get our security guys round to at least try

0:12:36 > 0:12:39- and help... - Yeah.- How does that sound, then...?

0:12:39 > 0:12:41It would make me very grateful.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43Everybody here would be very grateful.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48For Zac and Rhys, the new venture is their future.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52I think it is fair to say that these two lads don't look like your

0:12:52 > 0:12:57typical nursery nurses but it means the world to them and Sara and

0:12:57 > 0:13:02it is crucial we do something to help to get this project back on track.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04There is clearly a lot to do here

0:13:04 > 0:13:07so, while I get security expert Tony on the case,

0:13:07 > 0:13:10it is back to Dan in Yorkshire.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15Back in Leeds, Granville and May's backdoor was kicked in

0:13:15 > 0:13:18and their house ransacked.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Thieves have caused chaos and amongst other things,

0:13:20 > 0:13:24they have made off with a safe full of their valuables,

0:13:24 > 0:13:28including their golden wedding anniversary presents.

0:13:28 > 0:13:29May is very shaken up.

0:13:29 > 0:13:34Granville is just about coping and their daughter Haley is furious.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36Angry.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38More angry because it is my mum and dad, you know,

0:13:38 > 0:13:42and it's like, you don't do that to my mum and dad.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44They're old, you know, and it's...

0:13:44 > 0:13:47I have got no respect for people like that.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50Respect is the wrong word, though. I'm angry.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54So, it is time to beef up their security

0:13:54 > 0:13:56and despite the fact that the break-in

0:13:56 > 0:13:59happened around the back, the first thing Neil does is to change

0:13:59 > 0:14:02the front door lock and put a better one in.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07May is really worried about the broken back door

0:14:07 > 0:14:10and wants a sturdy security grille installed,

0:14:10 > 0:14:14so Neil immediately gets on the case and calls for extra help.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17I don't suppose you have got a spare hour today, have you,

0:14:17 > 0:14:18to get round to a job?

0:14:18 > 0:14:21They got burgled last night and they are petrified.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23They need a door grille putting on.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26You'll get round today to have a look?

0:14:26 > 0:14:30If you can get over... That's great. Cheers, Rick. All right, Cheers.

0:14:30 > 0:14:31Bye.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37It is about time I got involved with the security upgrade.

0:14:37 > 0:14:42First up, it's the fence, which the thieves found too easy to scale.

0:14:42 > 0:14:43Right, this stuff...

0:14:43 > 0:14:48It won't slice you up like carpet gripper or barbed wire or glass

0:14:48 > 0:14:52or anything horrible like that, it is just really unpleasant to touch.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56I mean, that hurts. It keeps the burglars away.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Meanwhile, Neil's mates are measuring up for the security grille

0:15:04 > 0:15:06to protect the back door

0:15:06 > 0:15:10while Neil's round the front installing the alarm box.

0:15:10 > 0:15:15To be a proper deterrent, it needs to be in a prominent position.

0:15:15 > 0:15:16This is your alarm system.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19That is a key fob - that is much easier to use than the keypad.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21So the key fob, all it is...

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Basically, press the top button

0:15:24 > 0:15:26and you'll hear the alarm beep outside once.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28That's actually live now, that's active,

0:15:28 > 0:15:30- so once I open this door... - ALARM RINGS

0:15:30 > 0:15:31- It sets your alarm off.- Right.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34- To turn it off, it's just the bottom button... - ALARM STOPS

0:15:34 > 0:15:38- And you will hear it beep twice outside.- Yeah, fantastic.

0:15:41 > 0:15:42So, I feel like we have made some headway.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44We have secured the fences,

0:15:44 > 0:15:46put an alarm on and there's more to come.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49Hopefully Nick is going to be impressed.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51More importantly, Granville and May

0:15:51 > 0:15:54have got a chance of having a better night's sleep.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05It is three days after the break-in

0:16:05 > 0:16:08and I am back with Granville and May.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11They are proud grandparents who got married as teenagers

0:16:11 > 0:16:14when he was 19 and she was just 16.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17Their joint passion was motorbikes.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20So, that's May there?

0:16:20 > 0:16:22That's May there.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25She'll have been 17.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27- So you were rockers?- Yeah.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30- That's a friend.- Yeah.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33- So you were proper bikers and rockers?- Oh, yeah.

0:16:33 > 0:16:34Yeah, yeah.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38- Is that your bikes? - That's mine, that were mine.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41I got rid of that two years ago.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44I was 70 when I got rid of it.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47You know the stuff that was taken, it was from your 50th anniversary.

0:16:47 > 0:16:5150th... That's 50th wedding anniversary.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53- Stuff that the family has bought for her?- This is it.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55Well, you can't replace...

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Well, you can replace it, but it's not the same, is it? It's...

0:17:00 > 0:17:01I don't know, it's...

0:17:03 > 0:17:06You know there's somebody out there that's got your gear

0:17:06 > 0:17:09and that's what is upsetting.

0:17:12 > 0:17:13Despite their losses,

0:17:13 > 0:17:17things are starting to get back to normal for May and Granville.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20May is feeling more secure now that the grille has been installed

0:17:20 > 0:17:22over the back door.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24So with things looking up here in Leeds,

0:17:24 > 0:17:26it is back to Keeley in South Wales.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32I have asked crime reduction adviser Tony to suggest

0:17:32 > 0:17:35ways of improving security at the new nursery building.

0:17:35 > 0:17:39Remember, twice in one year thieves have smashed their way in

0:17:39 > 0:17:41and stolen copper piping.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45The resulting water damage will cost many thousands of pounds to

0:17:45 > 0:17:48put right, so we need to make sure it doesn't happen again.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51Now, Tony, to the untrained eye,

0:17:51 > 0:17:53I think the ground floor looks pretty secure.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55The ground floor is pretty secure

0:17:55 > 0:17:58and here you can see they have put grilles on the front, we've got

0:17:58 > 0:18:02good roller shutter doors that are protecting solid doors behind.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05So, yeah, the ground floor is not looking too bad.

0:18:05 > 0:18:09And, as I'm looking round, the other thing I can see is an alarm box

0:18:09 > 0:18:12on the top, so we know there's an alarm on the premises as well.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15But what we are concerned about here is that even though

0:18:15 > 0:18:16the ground floor is protected,

0:18:16 > 0:18:20just a little journey up these steps here is how the burglars got in.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22They have walked up the side of the wall.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25- And that is not particularly difficult, is it?- No, it's not.

0:18:25 > 0:18:26It's pretty good steps there.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29So that window needed to really be protected just like these ones.

0:18:29 > 0:18:34Yes, it is the only one that is close to the edge of the wall.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37Let's go in and look at that window, then, from the inside.

0:18:37 > 0:18:38Right, let's go.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45You can see here where they have ripped the floorboards up

0:18:45 > 0:18:48and they have snapped the copper piping off.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52The people that steal copper pipes don't take any care

0:18:52 > 0:18:54in what they are doing.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57They have snapped the pipes, they don't turn the water off,

0:18:57 > 0:19:00they cause a huge amount of damage and, looking at this here,

0:19:00 > 0:19:03this is fairly recent copper piping.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07You can see where they have snapped it off but they don't need to

0:19:07 > 0:19:11because these are push-fit connectors and they just come off.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14- You don't need to snap the pipes. - Fools.- They really are.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17Copper pipes are used for water and gas

0:19:17 > 0:19:19and they don't care which ones they break.

0:19:19 > 0:19:24The risk is terrible. The damage they cause is enormous.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27Even though it is several days since the break-in,

0:19:27 > 0:19:32the building is still in chaos and, until we have made it more secure,

0:19:32 > 0:19:35there's not much point in starting on repairs.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38So, this is the window.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Oh, the glass. What a mess!

0:19:41 > 0:19:45What can we do to make this safer in future?

0:19:45 > 0:19:49This was a double-glazed window with toughened glass.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51Obviously not up to the job.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53A couple of things you can do that are really simple -

0:19:53 > 0:19:56you can put a grille on the outside

0:19:56 > 0:19:58just as we've got on the ground floor

0:19:58 > 0:20:01- or you could replace the glass with laminated glass.- OK.

0:20:01 > 0:20:05A double-glazed unit with laminated glass - if they break it,

0:20:05 > 0:20:07the glass will crack but the plastic laminate

0:20:07 > 0:20:09in the glass will hold it together,

0:20:09 > 0:20:13so it's much more difficult for a criminal to get through.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16Excellent. So either a grille or some laminate on the window.

0:20:16 > 0:20:21The boiler. I just not cannot believe

0:20:21 > 0:20:25that somebody would cut off pipes to a boiler.

0:20:26 > 0:20:30Copper has a resale value.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33It is recyclable and the value of copper is quite high

0:20:33 > 0:20:36at the moment, so a small piece of copper...

0:20:36 > 0:20:40Every bit counts and it goes towards the overall money for the thief.

0:20:40 > 0:20:45'It seems the thieves spent a long time wreaking havoc inside

0:20:45 > 0:20:48'the building and what allowed them to do that

0:20:48 > 0:20:50'was the quality of the alarm.'

0:20:50 > 0:20:54So it looks like this was the original alarm.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56- Not much use on the floor.- No.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59This is the replacement that they have had to

0:20:59 > 0:21:01put in for insurance purposes.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05But even the replacement isn't really what we're after, is it?

0:21:05 > 0:21:08This is obviously a stopgap.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11The building is secluded

0:21:11 > 0:21:16and the alarm that was fitted was an audible-only alarm.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18Meaning that it just lets off a sound.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21That's right, and because we haven't got people living in the area

0:21:21 > 0:21:24and good neighbours, there was nobody to raise the alarm

0:21:24 > 0:21:27when the criminals broke in, smashed it off the wall.

0:21:27 > 0:21:31What we need is an alarm that does a little bit more than that.

0:21:31 > 0:21:35The next type of alarm will actually phone up

0:21:35 > 0:21:37the owner of the premises and tell them that

0:21:37 > 0:21:40the alarm has been activated so that they can respond to it.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43I really think this is where we can help them.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47- We can get a better alarm system put in for them.- That will be brilliant.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51So, while the damage to the property seems rather overwhelming,

0:21:51 > 0:21:53the security fixes are fairly simple.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56I really want to help Zac and Rhys

0:21:56 > 0:21:59because they clearly adore what they do as nursery nurses

0:21:59 > 0:22:03and they are determined to get the new venture started.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05You have got a fun job, haven't you?

0:22:05 > 0:22:08I mean, we are all absolutely filthy and we have had

0:22:08 > 0:22:11a bit of a workout, trying to get out of these little chairs.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13- It is good, you have a good time. - Absolutely.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16- It is a bit of a lifestyle, really, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:22:16 > 0:22:20You've got to be willing to get messy everyday, to get stuck in.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23- Can't really not take it all home, really.- No.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26One day you are playing with gloop, another day

0:22:26 > 0:22:29you are building forts, you're outside playing football.

0:22:29 > 0:22:30It is always different.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33So it must be hard, knowing that you have been stopped

0:22:33 > 0:22:36in your tracks opening another nursery.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38- It's very discouraging.- Yeah.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41You are trying to set this up and not only so we can expand

0:22:41 > 0:22:45the business for the children, for the community round there.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47Every time we start getting closer,

0:22:47 > 0:22:50we get knocked straight back to square one.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52And I also want to help owner Sara

0:22:52 > 0:22:55because she is worried sick about the amount of money

0:22:55 > 0:22:58she is having to pay out to fund the new business

0:22:58 > 0:23:03and about potential job losses if it becomes unaffordable for her.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06I am their boss, I am responsible for them.

0:23:06 > 0:23:12I am responsible for their mortgages and their family and their bills.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16That is my responsibility because I took them on.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18I told them there were jobs.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21It is impossible not to feel sorry for Sara, and what might

0:23:21 > 0:23:26give her some confidence is if we can beef up the security at the new site.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30The problem with their previous alarm was that it didn't ring out

0:23:30 > 0:23:34and link to a telephone. It was about as much use as this.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36- Mummy.- Mummy?

0:23:36 > 0:23:38That's not Mummy, that's a dinosaur!

0:23:38 > 0:23:40- Rrargh!- Rrargh!

0:23:41 > 0:23:45Thankfully, the alarm system we are installing at the new nursery site

0:23:45 > 0:23:47is much more advanced.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50Unlike the old one, that just made a loud noise in what is a rather

0:23:50 > 0:23:54isolated location, the new one is connected to a phone line.

0:23:54 > 0:23:55If the alarm is triggered,

0:23:55 > 0:23:59it will automatically call or text Zac or Rhys.

0:23:59 > 0:24:00Much better.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04So, with the work done, it is time

0:24:04 > 0:24:07to get crime reduction adviser Tony back to the site.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12You have done a lot of work since I was here. How are things coming on?

0:24:12 > 0:24:14Things are coming along quite nicely.

0:24:14 > 0:24:16As you said, we have managed to get quite a lot done.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19We have had the alarm fitted, which is great.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21It has given us a great sense of peace of mind.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23We feel a lot safer in the building

0:24:23 > 0:24:26and we feel a lot safer leaving the building now.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28That is really good.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31There were a couple of other things I mentioned when I was here.

0:24:31 > 0:24:32What about the window?

0:24:32 > 0:24:36Because I recommended you put some laminated glass on there.

0:24:37 > 0:24:41Yeah, the window is getting fitted shortly and outside,

0:24:41 > 0:24:45we are going to slant... to prevent people walking on it.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51Despite the amount of work still to be done redeveloping the site,

0:24:51 > 0:24:54Zac is feeling much more positive now, and much safer.

0:24:56 > 0:24:57The alarm is brilliant.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00The fact that it can phone out is really, really helpful for us.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03It gives us a great peace of mind, especially because it can

0:25:03 > 0:25:07contact multiple people, so we can guarantee somebody will be coming.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09HORN BLAST

0:25:09 > 0:25:12We are looking forward to all the building work being finished

0:25:12 > 0:25:15because then we can start moving in, we can start setting up

0:25:15 > 0:25:18our expansion and that will be fantastic.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22I am very thankful for the help of Keeley and the team,

0:25:22 > 0:25:25the alarm guys... Everybody has been absolutely fantastic

0:25:25 > 0:25:28and I honestly think that, without them, we wouldn't have gone

0:25:28 > 0:25:31ahead with this, so I can't say thank you enough.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35So, a good result in Swansea. Now back to Dan in Leeds.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37How is he getting on?

0:25:39 > 0:25:41The security upgrade's now complete

0:25:41 > 0:25:43and the iron grille at the back is in.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46So what does crime reduction officer Nick think?

0:25:46 > 0:25:49Last time, he only gave it a four out of ten.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51I have looked at it from the front.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53You have a nice, bright, shiny alarm box.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55That is what a burglar doesn't want to see.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59The lock on the front door has been changed - good quality lock now.

0:26:00 > 0:26:05You come round here and instantly you see an iron gate, security gate.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08We don't usually recommend this

0:26:08 > 0:26:12but it is a last-ditch measure to make things extra secure

0:26:12 > 0:26:16because, at the moment, we don't know what type of door

0:26:16 > 0:26:18the family are going to be going for.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23If at all possible, as we know,

0:26:23 > 0:26:26burglars would prefer the back of the house, the side of the house

0:26:26 > 0:26:31rather than the front, because of the surveillance opportunities.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33Change your habits -

0:26:33 > 0:26:38put the vast majority of your security at the back of the house.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42So secure at the back, secure at the side,

0:26:42 > 0:26:43go out the front.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48So, last time you were here you gave the place

0:26:48 > 0:26:50a four out of ten for security.

0:26:50 > 0:26:51How about now?

0:26:51 > 0:26:57Now, with everything that you've done, I will give it an eight,

0:26:57 > 0:27:00- if you are happy with that. - Great, eight out of ten.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04That is really going to put their mind at rest.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07'Time to break the good news to the old rocker himself.'

0:27:07 > 0:27:11Now that he has come round and reassessed the place,

0:27:11 > 0:27:14he's given it an eight out of ten for security.

0:27:14 > 0:27:15- That's really good.- Yeah.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20In two days it went from a four to an eight. It's good.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23Do you think that will help May out?

0:27:23 > 0:27:24I think it will.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27It is calming her down, like.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31I am quite confident now leaving my house.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34It is pretty safe, do you know what I mean? It is safe.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38- So, what can we do to get it to a ten?- No-one gets a ten.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Oh, right!

0:27:40 > 0:27:42Buckingham Palace don't get a ten,

0:27:42 > 0:27:44Fort Knox don't get a ten.

0:27:44 > 0:27:46Not from Nick, no chance.

0:27:46 > 0:27:48'So, May is on the mend

0:27:48 > 0:27:52'and it is great to see Granville smiling again. Job done.'

0:27:52 > 0:27:54Granville and May are such a lovely couple.

0:27:54 > 0:27:56It is really great that we were able to help them

0:27:56 > 0:27:58feel more secure in their own home again.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Absolutely, and I really hope that the nursery

0:28:01 > 0:28:03in South Wales does go ahead,

0:28:03 > 0:28:07not just for Sara, Rhys and Zac's sake, but for the whole community.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10That is it for now. Remember to keep them doors locked.

0:28:10 > 0:28:12- Ta-ra.- Bye-bye.
