:00:12. > :00:17.This is Crimewatch Roadshow. We are back, live, every weekday for the

:00:17. > :00:27.next four weeks. Crimes the police need your help to solve. The kind

:00:27. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:48.of crimes which could be happening Hello, welcome to a new series of

:00:48. > :00:51.Crimewatch Roadshow. I am Rav Wilding. Over the next four weeks

:00:51. > :00:56.we are going to be asking for your help to put criminals where they

:00:56. > :00:59.belong, behind bars. We are live every weekday morning and we will

:00:59. > :01:03.be tackling burglaries, scams, vandalism and car crime, the kind

:01:03. > :01:06.of offences that affect all of us. I have worked as a police officer

:01:06. > :01:09.so I know that you're calls will really make a difference. We are

:01:09. > :01:16.ready to take all calls and the numbers are on your screen now.

:01:16. > :01:23.Coming up today: We want your help to find the men who terrorised a

:01:23. > :01:28.Morecambe woman in her Rome home. - - her own home. The attack was so

:01:28. > :01:32.violent that they smashed their way inside, leaving her terrified. A

:01:32. > :01:36.fight on Blackpool promenade in the early hours of the morning. We need

:01:36. > :01:40.to find the culprits. And a busy night out for the police in Preston.

:01:40. > :01:47.We find out just what challenges they face on a typical Saturday

:01:48. > :01:52.night. Stop resisting! Calm down. All month we will be live from

:01:52. > :01:57.around the country. We are kicking of the series in the north-west of

:01:57. > :02:00.England in Lancashire. Joining me on the road is Dave Guest. You are

:02:00. > :02:09.a Crimewatch Roadshow veteran and you have reported for us for four

:02:09. > :02:13.years. Where right you today? Rav. I hope you don't mind me

:02:13. > :02:16.saying that you are an old hand as well. It's a bit breezy, but it is

:02:16. > :02:19.looking as beautiful as ever in Morecambe. We're going to be

:02:19. > :02:24.working with Lancashire Constabulary and Merseyside police.

:02:24. > :02:29.I have been joined by Jacey Normand. She is down there somewhere. We

:02:29. > :02:33.know this patch well, don't we? certainly do. I've been reporting

:02:33. > :02:37.for the BBC in the north-west for seven years. There is plenty going

:02:37. > :02:42.on. We have been on the front line with the police using equipment

:02:42. > :02:46.like this. It is time to get on with things now. The first crime we

:02:46. > :02:50.need your help in solving today happened in more can just about a

:02:50. > :02:55.month ago. We should all feel perfectly safe and secure in our

:02:55. > :02:59.own homes. But one woman has been left traumatised by a terrifying

:02:59. > :03:03.experience that she had been her around home while her husband was

:03:03. > :03:09.on a night out. Wednesday is Andy Monk's regular night out with their

:03:09. > :03:19.friend. While he was enjoying a few pints in his local... His wife was

:03:19. > :03:20.

:03:20. > :03:26.facing a terrifying ordeal back at You can't actually believe what you

:03:26. > :03:30.are listening to. You can hear your wife screaming like crazy. This one

:03:30. > :03:33.an axe at her. Fortunately, she ducked and it missed. Otherwise I

:03:33. > :03:38.would be coming back with no wife. These two men had only one

:03:38. > :03:41.intention, to force their way into this suburban home and not let

:03:41. > :03:51.anything or anyone stand in their way. I thought, somebody has come

:03:51. > :03:52.

:03:52. > :03:56.to murder me. It is 8.55 and Kim is settling down to watch her

:03:56. > :04:03.favourite programme on TV. She works as a cleaner and suffers from

:04:03. > :04:06.poor health. Right, I'm off. husband, a semi-retired taxi-driver,

:04:06. > :04:10.looks forward to his regular Wednesday night out. He heads off

:04:10. > :04:14.just before 9 o'clock, leaving his wife on her around in the house.

:04:14. > :04:19.was quite relaxed. I was with a friend by sea once a week. I had

:04:19. > :04:22.three or four points. This couple have no idea that a burglary has

:04:22. > :04:26.been meticulously planned and back two dangerous and armed men are on

:04:26. > :04:31.their way. I was just turning the page and then it went into

:04:31. > :04:36.something else. The two masked men arrived at the house with one thing

:04:36. > :04:43.on their mind. Getting inside under any means necessary. After knocking

:04:43. > :04:47.out the exterior light, they begin kicking at the door. I heard an

:04:47. > :04:51.almighty bang. What is that? They kicked the door so hard that it

:04:51. > :04:57.literally flies off its hinges and comes crashing to the floor. The

:04:57. > :05:02.bend into the house with an axe and crowbar. Kim runs into a hallway

:05:02. > :05:07.and is faced with her worst nightmare. Disbelief. I saw this

:05:07. > :05:10.great danger, the blackness, I thought, they are fully in black. I

:05:10. > :05:15.thought, somebody has come to murder me. It was really on their

:05:15. > :05:25.mind to get me. Terrified for her life, she runs back into the living

:05:25. > :05:35.room. Using an axe, the man smashes pieces out of the door, and as Kim

:05:35. > :05:35.

:05:35. > :05:42.tries to keep it shut. Finally, she is overpowered. They burst in, I

:05:42. > :05:46.turned to jelly. I immediately just put my palms up. A real stay-away

:05:46. > :05:52.position. Then, something unexpected happens. The man with

:05:52. > :05:55.the axe takes his mask off, fully revealing his face. The hair was

:05:56. > :06:00.flattened. He said, I'm not going to hurt you. I want to know where

:06:00. > :06:05.you keep your money. And not going to hurt you. I want to know where

:06:05. > :06:10.the money is. He didn't K -- stay calm for long. Tell us whether

:06:10. > :06:18.money is! The tone suddenly becomes very angry. Tell us how to get in

:06:18. > :06:23.the safe. You know exactly what is in there. But Kim did not actually

:06:23. > :06:27.know how to get in. I said, I really don't know, I can't tell you.

:06:27. > :06:33.There is no way, I thought he is definitely going to hammer me on

:06:33. > :06:42.the head. Completely unaware of a horror happening in his own home,

:06:42. > :06:46.Andy is about to receive the worst A truly horrific experience. We

:06:46. > :06:51.will have more on that story and discover what happened to Kim next

:06:51. > :06:55.later in the programme. Now back to Rav, with the first wanted faces of

:06:55. > :07:01.the series. We are kicking off with this man.

:07:01. > :07:06.He was due to appear before Preston Crown Court on two counts of

:07:06. > :07:10.wounding in August 2001. He did not turn up and has not been seen since.

:07:10. > :07:15.He was born in Kosovo but is known to have a connection with the

:07:15. > :07:21.Blackburn, Liverpool, Bristol and London areas.

:07:21. > :07:24.Joseph McCallister, detectives in Cleveland want to talk to him about

:07:24. > :07:27.criminal damage and arson with intent to danger of life. He's

:07:28. > :07:33.known to have connections in the north-east, the Midlands and Luton.

:07:33. > :07:40.He has a scar above his left eye and another two on his neck.

:07:40. > :07:44.This lady is Dan Dan Shi. She was sentenced to 10 years for

:07:44. > :07:47.conspiracy to commit robbery. She absconded before she could be

:07:47. > :07:51.jailed. She has connections to the Newcastle and Birmingham area.

:07:51. > :07:56.Detectives believe she could be anywhere in the country. If you

:07:56. > :08:01.know where she is, let us know. Do you recognise this 25-year-old,

:08:01. > :08:04.John Ashworth? He was Taj with actual bodily harm, theft and

:08:04. > :08:08.offences under the Protection From Harassment Act. He failed to appear

:08:08. > :08:12.in court. He has a North West accent and two scars, one on the

:08:12. > :08:22.left of his chin and one on his 4 on. He has a tribal design tattooed

:08:22. > :08:36.

:08:36. > :08:42.Don't forget, all of the wanted faces are also on the website.

:08:42. > :08:47.Jacey, what have you got for us? This is the path Try report on for

:08:47. > :08:50.the BBC. Crime reporting is very much part of that work. Here is

:08:50. > :08:55.something to give you a flavour of our area and a look at what is

:08:55. > :08:59.coming up for the rest of the week. Welcome to the varied and vast

:08:59. > :09:04.region of the north-west of England, from the rugged Lancashire

:09:04. > :09:11.landscape... To Metropolitan Mersey side, police forces face some

:09:11. > :09:16.unique and challenging issues. For the next week we will be following

:09:16. > :09:21.Lancashire Constabulary on high- impact raids. Wow, that is a

:09:21. > :09:30.serious cannabis farm. And we will be with Merseyside Police on the

:09:30. > :09:36.front line as they tackle the worn Through the day-to-day demands of

:09:37. > :09:41.antisocial behaviour... Stop resisting! Lancashire is a diverse

:09:41. > :09:44.region, home to about 1.5 million people. It is one of the safest

:09:44. > :09:49.places to live in the country, with a police force ranked among the

:09:49. > :09:55.best. But with several football clubs, the police are regularly

:09:55. > :09:58.tested, especially when teams and their fans face relegation. It is a

:09:58. > :10:01.big operation, a big commitment for Lancashire police. The last match

:10:02. > :10:07.of the season, there is a lot to play for one that changes the

:10:07. > :10:12.policing operation. Policing the same sized population as their

:10:12. > :10:15.neighbours across the border, but just a 5th of the area, the force

:10:15. > :10:21.face the issues of a metropolitan centre. In recent months we have

:10:21. > :10:25.seen a dramatic increase in the use of scrambler bikes in firearms

:10:25. > :10:30.offences. Defenders have travelled to and from the scenes of crime on

:10:30. > :10:35.the back of these vehicles. -- the offenders. Merseyside and

:10:35. > :10:38.Lancashire have issues with gun crime. We will be looking at how

:10:38. > :10:43.the unique multi agency approach is producing results.

:10:43. > :10:53.We will be working with Merseyside and Lancashire forces to help

:10:53. > :10:56.

:10:56. > :11:06.We will be needing your help. So, do you have the clues that could

:11:06. > :11:10.That all looks good. Time for some CCTV. Have a good look at these

:11:10. > :11:15.crooks. All of them have been caught on camera.

:11:15. > :11:20.Two men arrive in central London, February of this year in what a

:11:20. > :11:24.manner. They stand by a pill and look like they are chatting. Look

:11:24. > :11:27.for the nifty footwork. The bike is being passed from one to another

:11:27. > :11:34.and then shoved along until it is far enough away from its owner for

:11:34. > :11:43.the thieves to pick it up and make off with it. If you know these TVs,

:11:43. > :11:47.give them the boot. -- thieves. Uxbridge Library in Middlesex,

:11:47. > :11:52.November last year. This student needs a break from his studies. But

:11:52. > :11:56.who is this? Another student? She is certainly studying the room

:11:56. > :12:01.carefully. After a leisurely move around, she is showing a keen

:12:01. > :12:06.interest in the other student's desk. It becomes clear she is not

:12:06. > :12:13.here to study. She picks up his rucksack and heads off. Let's throw

:12:13. > :12:18.the book at this thing. If you know who she is, give us a call. --

:12:18. > :12:23.Thief. Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire. It

:12:23. > :12:30.is August, last year. This man is trying on the jacket. He likes it

:12:30. > :12:36.so much that he gets the trousers as well. Suits you, sir. Paying for

:12:36. > :12:40.it does not suit him. He just walks straight out of the door. If you

:12:40. > :12:50.recognise this smartly-dressed gentleman, get in touch.

:12:50. > :12:57.

:12:57. > :13:00.Well, if you recognise anything, Come on, it is day one. Show us

:13:00. > :13:06.what you're made off and get in touch. Still to come on the

:13:06. > :13:12.programme this morning: We meet the man who ended up with a fractured

:13:12. > :13:19.skull following a fight on Blackpool promenade. A lively night

:13:19. > :13:29.in Preston. But the handcuffs are out. And find out how a husband

:13:29. > :13:30.

:13:30. > :13:32.reacts when he discovers his wife This is the 4th year Crimewatch

:13:32. > :13:36.Roadshow has been on air, asking for your help to catch criminals.

:13:36. > :13:41.And we do get results. Here are three of the cases we featured last

:13:41. > :13:45.year, where the offenders have been brought to book. The face of a

:13:45. > :13:48.dangerous man. A convicted rapist who had been on the run for four

:13:48. > :13:52.years. Detectives in a report want your

:13:52. > :13:56.help in finding this man. Within hours of his face appearing on

:13:56. > :13:59.Crimewatch Roadshow, detectives had tracked him down to a cafe in

:13:59. > :14:04.London. We received some excellent information from members of the

:14:04. > :14:07.public. That enabled me to co- ordinate a response with the

:14:07. > :14:10.Metropolitan Police and they arrested the man. Within days of

:14:10. > :14:13.appearing on a programme, he was starting an eight-year sentence.

:14:14. > :14:18.You're calls really do make a difference, especially to the

:14:18. > :14:21.victims. People think it is just a television show and it is just

:14:21. > :14:26.there for entertainment. But it does affect people's lives and

:14:26. > :14:30.helps them to move on. And went police put secret cameras into a

:14:30. > :14:40.special card to fill anybody trying to break-in. We showed these

:14:40. > :14:40.

:14:40. > :14:45.pictures and you help identify him. You may remember this crime we

:14:45. > :14:53.feature - a gang broke into this home in Salford, Greater Manchester,

:14:53. > :14:59.and try to steal a brand new car but the victim was not taking it

:14:59. > :15:03.lying down. Despite being completely naked, he tackled the

:15:03. > :15:09.men and stopped them stealing his prized possession. This man was

:15:09. > :15:13.arrested for his part in the crime. He is now behind bars serving a

:15:13. > :15:18.five-year sentence for aggravated burglary. We have had a great

:15:18. > :15:26.record of getting results, so let's make sure this year is no exception,

:15:26. > :15:31.but for now back to Morecambe Bay. It is a quiet Monday morning here,

:15:31. > :15:37.but it has been a very busy weekend in town and city centres across the

:15:37. > :15:41.UK. Preston is typical of many, were alcohol-related incidents keep

:15:41. > :15:50.the police busy. We joined Operation Nightsafe to witness a

:15:50. > :15:55.typical Saturday night. It is 9 o'clock on Saturday night at

:15:55. > :15:59.Lancashire Police HQ, and this Sergeant is briefing his team

:15:59. > :16:08.before they hit the streets of Preston. It is a team which

:16:08. > :16:12.includes officers from environmental health and licensing.

:16:12. > :16:18.Tonight we will be focusing on the most vulnerable. People who have

:16:18. > :16:25.had too much alcohol... The few come back tonight you will be

:16:25. > :16:32.arrested. Potential victims of robbery and violent crime... He is

:16:32. > :16:36.not even responding. Ready to go at 10 o'clock. The first stop for the

:16:36. > :16:45.licensing and environmental health officers is a routine inspection of

:16:45. > :16:54.a cafe, where unusually smoking illegal flavoured tobacco is

:16:54. > :17:00.allowed on strict conditions. the owner has been arrested for smoking

:17:00. > :17:07.in areas where it is not allow old. Carrying out a routine inspection

:17:07. > :17:11.is easier said than done. The have the power of entry but we will

:17:11. > :17:18.liaise with the police to get in. Further investigation will have to

:17:18. > :17:24.wait until an application for a warrant is made. It is not long

:17:24. > :17:29.past 10 o'clock and the trouble is brewing outside a takeaway in town.

:17:29. > :17:37.He has had a drink of ready and he is showing he is up for a bit of a

:17:37. > :17:43.fight. It is because you have had alcohol,

:17:43. > :17:48.you have been involved in a fight. This power enable us us to remove

:17:48. > :17:54.him from the city centre and make sure he doesn't get in any trouble.

:17:54. > :17:59.A section 27 is one tool the police used to make sure a boisterous

:17:59. > :18:06.night does not turn into a brawl. Another it is a hi-tech machine

:18:06. > :18:11.that keeps pubs and clubs safer, a knife Raj which detects metal.

:18:11. > :18:15.has two functions, one is to check for knives and other dangerous

:18:15. > :18:20.items people might have. We have found in the past knuckle-dusters

:18:20. > :18:24.and knives, drugs. Secondly it can interact with the public, and if

:18:24. > :18:29.they have been drinking too much and might be a perpetrator of crime,

:18:29. > :18:39.we can remove them from the town centre. But there is no stopping

:18:39. > :18:44.some people from getting into a spot of bother. This young lady has

:18:44. > :18:49.thrown some keys, accidentally hit the officer, she has been spoken to.

:18:49. > :18:54.She is quite drunk, wouldn't listen to the advice she was given, thrown

:18:54. > :19:01.the keys again and been arrested. Instead of taking the officer's

:19:01. > :19:07.advice, this young woman will be spending the night in a police cell.

:19:07. > :19:11.Of her property will be taken off her. Probably end up with a fixed

:19:12. > :19:19.penalty ticket for being drunk and disorderly. Police officers will be

:19:19. > :19:25.on the street for anything up to an hour -- off the street. It is

:19:25. > :19:31.nearly 1 o'clock in the morning. 11 prison cells have prisoners in them,

:19:31. > :19:36.five of those are drunk and disorderly. The night is young.

:19:36. > :19:41.Back in town things are starting to get busier. A Christian

:19:41. > :19:47.organisation that helps vulnerable young people, the street pastors,

:19:47. > :19:53.do anything from offering snacks to getting revellers home safely when

:19:53. > :20:03.they are worse for wear. This man is in need of help. They have no

:20:03. > :20:06.

:20:06. > :20:14.idea what has happened to him. on to me. Come on then. He may have

:20:14. > :20:19.been assaulted, he could be gravely ill. He is losing consciousness and

:20:19. > :20:25.this is a cause for serious concern. He is just one of the serious cases

:20:25. > :20:32.officers will have to deal with as the night goes on. We will find out

:20:32. > :20:36.what happens to that man later. These days, policing is a high-tech

:20:36. > :20:44.business and the gadgets officers have got available to them are

:20:44. > :20:50.getting more sophisticated. We are joined now by Sergeant Andy weather,

:20:50. > :20:54.and he has a nifty finger printing gadget. This is a mobile

:20:54. > :20:59.fingerprinting device which we can use on the streets, when we are

:20:59. > :21:06.unsure of who people are or if we think they might be lying about

:21:06. > :21:12.their details. The first thing that strikes me is how small it is. It

:21:12. > :21:19.is like a mobile phone, it is tiny. It is a smartphone which allows us

:21:19. > :21:23.to send a fingerprint image off without saving or recording it.

:21:23. > :21:28.give a scenario, you could have someone stopped at the side of the

:21:28. > :21:33.road who has given you details, who you think might be false. You can

:21:33. > :21:41.get this machine out and test them there and then on the street. How

:21:41. > :21:46.long would it take for an answer to get back? 10-15 seconds, and that

:21:46. > :21:52.is if the suspect hasn't changed his mind about giving false details.

:21:52. > :21:59.Just getting this device out from your car would be enough to

:21:59. > :22:02.persuade someone to give their real details, as you say. There will be

:22:02. > :22:08.a people out there who think this is intrusive, randomly

:22:08. > :22:13.fingerprinting people. That is not the case, it is it? No, an offence

:22:13. > :22:17.must have been committed, the device does not store any

:22:17. > :22:24.information, it is not recorded. It is just about making sure, when

:22:24. > :22:31.dealing with people, we know who they are. Is it a lengthy process?

:22:31. > :22:37.A know, just give me your index finger. For I think we can see that.

:22:37. > :22:45.That is my fingerprint. The same with the left finger. You can see

:22:46. > :22:52.that coming up. That is fine. It has those two images and since

:22:52. > :22:57.those to the phone itself. We have the images, then they get sent off

:22:57. > :23:02.in about 15 seconds. That will not work for real in here because of

:23:02. > :23:07.our studio, you can't get the signal, but on the street it would

:23:07. > :23:12.be up to 15 seconds. You must have some success stories already?

:23:12. > :23:22.devices are being rolled out across the east Midlands as we speak, and

:23:22. > :23:23.

:23:23. > :23:29.on a daily basis we are getting a lot more hits and keeping people

:23:29. > :23:33.off the street because there are a lot more arrests taking place.

:23:33. > :23:39.finding people who are actually wanted. In a recent case a beggar

:23:39. > :23:45.was discovered as being wanted for a murder in Spain. Stories like

:23:45. > :23:52.that are turning the tide for us. A for now, let's go back to

:23:52. > :23:56.Morecambe Bay. Back to the terrifying story of the woman who

:23:56. > :24:02.was attacked in her own home not far from where we are here in

:24:02. > :24:09.Morecambe. When Andy Monks was enjoying a night out in his local

:24:09. > :24:14.pub, his wife was being put through a terrible ordeal in their own home.

:24:14. > :24:19.Two then kicked in the front door and attacked her with an axe,

:24:19. > :24:23.demanding to know where they kept the safe. I thought someone was

:24:23. > :24:28.coming to murder me. There was no way they were coming with that

:24:28. > :24:31.force and going home empty-handed. Kim did everything she could do to

:24:31. > :24:38.keep the men out of harm's reach, but they threatened her and

:24:38. > :24:44.demanded to know the combination to the safe. They swung an axe at her,

:24:44. > :24:49.fortunately she ducked and mist, otherwise no wife. This has been a

:24:49. > :24:54.traumatic experience which has had a knock-on effect with Andy as well.

:24:54. > :25:01.The second man finds a safe in the hallway but it is firmly bolted to

:25:01. > :25:05.the wall. He uses a crowbar. they wanted to know how they got

:25:05. > :25:12.into the safe and I couldn't tell them. I said I really don't know, I

:25:12. > :25:17.can't tell you. I thought he is not going to believe me. I completely

:25:17. > :25:22.felt there was no way out. I thought he is definitely going to

:25:22. > :25:28.hammer me on the head. The man grabbed her wrists and threatened

:25:28. > :25:34.her with the axe. The second man managed to free the safe from the

:25:34. > :25:44.wall. I just couldn't believe the safe had come out. I thought I am

:25:44. > :25:44.

:25:44. > :25:49.going to die. The men ran from the house. Kim's first thought was to

:25:49. > :25:56.call her husband. It didn't register they had got the safe, the

:25:56. > :26:02.shock was that tremendous. Andy Monks were still at the pub. This

:26:02. > :26:07.phone call would change everything. Out of the blue, you get a phone

:26:07. > :26:13.call like that. I was so shocked, it was unbelievable. In a split-

:26:13. > :26:23.second you can't believe what you are listening to. He runs out of

:26:23. > :26:27.

:26:27. > :26:34.Arriving home, the couple are desperately upset and in total

:26:34. > :26:38.shock. I believe they were targeted. Andy only ever goes out once a week

:26:38. > :26:43.with a friend, and I believe they have been targeted because the

:26:43. > :26:48.burglars were asking where the safe was. The man who threatened came

:26:48. > :26:56.took off his balaclava and she was able to give the police a

:26:56. > :27:02.description, which they have used to construct this image. The man is

:27:02. > :27:08.a white male in his mid-20s, fair hair, quite a round face with

:27:08. > :27:15.fairly even features. Andy has a message for the thieves. You have

:27:15. > :27:23.nearly killed my wife, you have traumatised the pair of us in such

:27:23. > :27:29.a way it is just on describable really. -- indescribable. We have

:27:30. > :27:35.lost not just the items and the money, it has destroyed our lives.

:27:35. > :27:41.Even just the lounge doesn't feel right with the lights on and

:27:41. > :27:47.everything. It's like that the time it happened, it has stuck in my

:27:47. > :27:54.subconscious now. I think we will have to move, to be honest. It has

:27:54. > :28:01.upset us too much. It has to be, life is life. Joining me now is the

:28:01. > :28:07.investigating officer. It was an awful ordeal for the couple. Talk

:28:07. > :28:15.me through the safe we saw featured in the report. The safe has been

:28:15. > :28:21.known about 11 years, sage green in colour, approximately 15 inches

:28:21. > :28:28.high, 20 inches in depth. It has the old style File Type locking

:28:28. > :28:33.mechanism on the front of the safe. A no digital keypad. No, not as far

:28:33. > :28:39.as I am aware. It will have damaged to the rear of the safe where it

:28:39. > :28:48.was wrenched from the wall. Inside the safe are documents, 2,000 in

:28:48. > :28:55.cash, banking cards, things with names of the family on it and can

:28:55. > :29:01.clearly be seen as belonging to them. Described the man to me again.

:29:01. > :29:08.About 25 years old, a white male, approx 5 ft 7 in height with light

:29:08. > :29:13.stubble on his face, short dark blonde mousy coloured hair and he

:29:13. > :29:19.is described as being medium build. And the other man? Not as well

:29:19. > :29:28.described, he is approximately 5 ft 10 in height, and also described as

:29:29. > :29:33.If anybody has information, please get in touch.

:29:33. > :29:37.Here are some more criminals caught on camera.

:29:37. > :29:42.October last year, something has caught this man's eye in the window

:29:42. > :29:47.of a local music shop in Wandsworth. He goes in and has a play with the

:29:47. > :29:50.equipment on show, including this laptop. But it seems he wants this

:29:50. > :29:59.one for keeps and he speaks it under his arm and walked straight

:29:59. > :30:05.out of the shop. -- sneaks. He gets on to a bus. Come on, give us the

:30:05. > :30:10.low-down on this laptop lifter. Next, this footage is of the inside

:30:10. > :30:16.of a house in Gloucestershire filmed on the owner's own CCTV.

:30:16. > :30:19.Crowbar in hand, the man cases the joint. This happened back in 20th

:30:19. > :30:25.September 10. Even though he gives us this lovely shot of his face, he

:30:25. > :30:30.still hasn't been caught. He got away with 10,000 in cash and

:30:30. > :30:37.valuable watches. Somebody must recognise this brazen pergola. Call

:30:37. > :30:43.us and turn Henin. -- beurre blanc. It is March this

:30:43. > :30:49.year in the Newham area. The plates are stolen and the driver is

:30:49. > :30:53.filling up. That is not enough. He pops open the boot to fill the cans

:30:53. > :30:58.he has got in there. And then he just strides off with over 60

:30:58. > :31:08.worth of fuel. Come on, we don't want another crisis at the pumps.

:31:08. > :31:24.

:31:24. > :31:28.So, give us a call if you know Back now to Jacey, who has another

:31:28. > :31:32.appeal. For me, one of the best things

:31:32. > :31:37.about living in the north-west is our wonderful coastline. Year in,

:31:37. > :31:40.year out, holidaymakers flock here to see it. But one holiday maker

:31:40. > :31:45.would take away a horrible souvenir that he would never forget. He was

:31:45. > :31:52.the victim of a vicious attack and he received a fractured skull.

:31:52. > :31:58.We will be hearing from the victim of that attack, Martin Hall. I am

:31:58. > :32:00.with the investigating officer, James Edmonds. A party of seven

:32:01. > :32:07.people had been celebrating a birthday. They were heading back to

:32:07. > :32:12.the hotel at about 12:30PM on April 14th. What happened next? A man

:32:12. > :32:18.took a flower from a woman. Her father intervened and a scuffle

:32:18. > :32:24.broke out. We have CCTV images. What are we seeing? A nasty scuffle,

:32:24. > :32:28.two men grab the older man. One of the men is approached by a woman,

:32:28. > :32:34.who he pushes to the floor before making off. This is all happening

:32:34. > :32:39.outside Chubby's Bar. We're going to take a look in slow-motion, so

:32:39. > :32:43.we can see some of the people you are keen to trace. A man in a white

:32:43. > :32:51.polo shirt who comes into the shot, that is him. You want to get hold

:32:51. > :32:55.of him. Another guy, he was wearing a beige jumper. What are you

:32:55. > :32:59.wanting these men in connection with? They are wanted in connection

:32:59. > :33:02.with public order offences and common assault. Things got worse

:33:02. > :33:06.and you are tree looking for a third man? We spoke to a number of

:33:06. > :33:11.witnesses who say this third man, dressed in black, was responsible

:33:11. > :33:18.for punching the victim. He is wanted in connection with the salt?

:33:18. > :33:26.Yes, assault and wounding. He suffered some injuries and lost a

:33:26. > :33:29.lot of blood and fractured his skull. Martin Hall, very badly

:33:29. > :33:33.traumatised. We need to catch these men.

:33:33. > :33:37.Despite his injuries, he has bravely agreed to come here and he

:33:37. > :33:40.is speaking to Jacey. I know you do not recall a great

:33:40. > :33:44.deal of the incident yourself because you were knocked

:33:44. > :33:47.unconscious. But talk me through a little bit about what you remember.

:33:47. > :33:52.We were walking back to the hotel after a night out. I heard some

:33:52. > :33:57.commotion behind me. I turned around and saw it was my friends. I

:33:57. > :34:02.stepped in to help them. Than I have been hit in the face. I don't

:34:02. > :34:07.really remember anything after that. You remember pulling one of the

:34:07. > :34:14.people off your friend's dad? stepped in, to defend him, really.

:34:14. > :34:18.How has it affected you? I get a lot of headaches. I never suffered

:34:18. > :34:25.with that before. Financially, we have been out of work. I cannot go

:34:25. > :34:28.back to work yet. That's it, really. I can't do anything. I suppose you

:34:28. > :34:34.have lost income because of that? Which in itself is not an easy

:34:34. > :34:38.thing to deal with. Thanks very much for talking to us. I suppose

:34:38. > :34:42.Martin's story is a good example about how a night out can quickly

:34:42. > :34:49.turn nasty. Earlier we had been doing some filming with the police

:34:49. > :34:56.on a night out in Preston. When we left that report, the police and

:34:56. > :34:59.street pastorss were helping a man It has been a lively Saturday night

:34:59. > :35:03.in Preston. Although most people have been enjoying the party

:35:03. > :35:08.atmosphere, alcohol might have got the better of a few. But this man

:35:08. > :35:12.is a cause for serious concern. The St pastors do not know what has

:35:12. > :35:17.happened to him. We will just get you wanted this bench, yes?

:35:17. > :35:20.might have been attacked, or he might be ill. We are not paramedics,

:35:20. > :35:24.we are not the police, but at least we can get him out of danger and

:35:24. > :35:31.getting into a safe place, let professionals help him.

:35:31. > :35:33.officers are able to contact a family member. It turns out the man

:35:33. > :35:38.has had weighty much to drink. But that doesn't mean they can just

:35:38. > :35:41.leave him. It is a duty of care to people. He is unconscious. The

:35:41. > :35:49.officers will make sure he continues to breathe and it, if

:35:49. > :35:53.necessary, intervene if he stops It is all about the vulnerability.

:35:53. > :35:56.Anybody could come along and beat him up and we could end up with

:35:56. > :36:00.murder, eventually. It is sad that somebody has got into that state,

:36:00. > :36:05.but we are here to look after people as well as arrest people. It

:36:06. > :36:10.is all part of the job. Serious alcohol-related incidents like this

:36:10. > :36:14.are responsible for tying up a valuable resources. Elsewhere on

:36:14. > :36:20.the streets, in the Ali's of Preston some people are still up to

:36:20. > :36:24.no good. In this case, urinating in public. You might want to put that

:36:24. > :36:28.away, mate. This man is allowed to go home. This one is not because he

:36:28. > :36:33.was doing it in front of everyone and is on his way down to the

:36:34. > :36:38.station. The gentleman in the back of the ban was seen urinating in a

:36:38. > :36:42.public place. -- van. We have arrested him for being drunk and

:36:42. > :36:50.disorderly in a public place. the plus side, he gets a free bed

:36:50. > :36:58.for the night. Do we will wait until the last over, yes? -- your

:36:58. > :37:04.It appears that alcohol has fuelled the next incident that the police

:37:04. > :37:11.have come to deal with. He was abusive to the taxi driver.

:37:11. > :37:20.taxi driver has pulled up and asked for help. Stop spitting! I will

:37:20. > :37:26.Straight away he was abusive and aggressive. He was extremely strong.

:37:26. > :37:30.Taller than most of us. He was drunk. Stop resisting! The officers

:37:30. > :37:34.arresting a man for being drunk and disorderly. But he is not going to

:37:34. > :37:44.go quietly. It is most unusual to have someone that is that

:37:44. > :37:57.

:37:57. > :38:03.(BLEEP)! I swear to God, I will head-butt you in a minute, you

:38:03. > :38:09.It has taken five officers to detain this one man. Stop

:38:09. > :38:12.threatening as. I swear to God, I will knock you out. Because of his

:38:12. > :38:15.agitated state, the police cannot be sure that he is not going to

:38:16. > :38:25.come to any harm, so everything is going to be removed, including his

:38:26. > :38:26.

:38:26. > :38:30.clothes. Open your fingers. Stocks off. He is the most aggressive, by

:38:30. > :38:37.far, of the people that we have seen tonight. Hopefully there will

:38:37. > :38:42.not be any more like that. As dawn breaks, they are still a few

:38:42. > :38:49.stragglers in town. Where are your friends? Have you got a plan to get

:38:49. > :38:53.home? Up you get, we will go and sit in the subway. It is just after

:38:53. > :38:58.4:30am. There has been a few minor arrests for drunkenness, that is

:38:58. > :39:03.about it. Custody, we have 18 prisoners in. 10 of them are drunk

:39:03. > :39:08.and disorderly related to the city centre night-time economy. They

:39:08. > :39:12.will all be dealt with in the morning once they are sober.

:39:12. > :39:16.police will stay out on the streets for another hour as the stragglers

:39:16. > :39:19.head home. Officers and revellers alike can have a well-earned

:39:19. > :39:24.break... Until next weekend, at least.

:39:24. > :39:29.Well, it was a long night for the team in Preston. All of the people

:39:29. > :39:32.we saw arrested in that film accepted fixed penalty notices.

:39:32. > :39:36.What we witnessed in Preston is typical of many cities. They

:39:36. > :39:43.estimate there are around 1 million alcohol-related crimes in the UK

:39:43. > :39:48.every year. Sergeant John Lovick, you police areas of Preston, were

:39:48. > :39:53.those incidents to that of otto officers deal with? It was a busy

:39:53. > :39:56.night in the city, there were two televised football events and it

:39:56. > :40:00.was the last major night for the students before they went home for

:40:00. > :40:04.the summer. But it was typical. have a secret weapon to try to

:40:04. > :40:11.tackle some of the violent crime that can happen. It is, in fact,

:40:11. > :40:15.this portable metal detecting system. Would you care to search me

:40:15. > :40:19.to see if I have offensive weapons? I don't think I could do a lot of

:40:19. > :40:24.damage with a butter knife, but it makes the point that it works. Is

:40:24. > :40:27.this practical for a city centre? When you go through one of these at

:40:27. > :40:33.the airport, you take all of that change out of your pockets, you

:40:33. > :40:37.take off your belt. Is it effective in city centres? Yes, it is very

:40:37. > :40:41.effective. It detects people carrying offensive weapons. It is

:40:41. > :40:46.also an excellent deterrent. We utilise it a lot in the city.

:40:46. > :40:52.must go off all the time with people with loose change in their

:40:52. > :40:56.pockets? Hark your officers looking for specific individuals? It will

:40:56. > :41:01.go off if they have changed in their pockets, but because of the

:41:01. > :41:05.opportunity to have an interaction with individuals. Anybody who we

:41:05. > :41:09.think is quite drunk, we will have a discussion with them. If we think

:41:09. > :41:13.they need to be leaving the city, we will tell them. But it also

:41:13. > :41:18.enables us to give them crime- prevention advice. It is about

:41:18. > :41:22.heading off trouble before it begins? We had section 27 mentioned

:41:22. > :41:26.in the film, what powers does that give your officers? It gives them

:41:26. > :41:32.the power to request people to leave the city, to direct them to

:41:32. > :41:37.leave. If we think that individual, or two or three pints from now, is

:41:37. > :41:40.likely to become involved in crime or disorder, we will issue a 27

:41:40. > :41:45.order. They have had a good night and it is time for them to go home.

:41:45. > :41:49.If they ignore that, they will get arrested? That is likely to be the

:41:49. > :41:52.outcome. That is the situation with the knife arch, made you will see

:41:52. > :41:56.them in a town near you. A quick update what has been coming

:41:56. > :42:04.in on the phones, we have had useful leads coming by a text

:42:04. > :42:09.message on one of deep wanted faces. Information on number three, which

:42:09. > :42:14.is Dan Dan Shi. She absconded from court. We are getting some

:42:15. > :42:18.information from hair. We are also hearing good information coming in

:42:19. > :42:23.on the Uxbridge Library case. A name has been forwarded there. That

:42:23. > :42:26.is really good. That's just about it for today. What are you doing

:42:26. > :42:29.tomorrow? We are really excited about

:42:29. > :42:34.tomorrow's programme. We will be live at a police riding centre

:42:34. > :42:37.looking at how they deal with hostile crowds and train their

:42:37. > :42:40.horses. And with the first Euro 2012 match

:42:40. > :42:44.kicking off tonight, we are going to be looking at the problems on

:42:44. > :42:49.perils of policing football matches closer to home, here in Lancashire.

:42:49. > :42:55.Sounds good! For more details about the crimes on today's programme, go

:42:55. > :42:58.to the website. We are going to leave you with another look at our
