:00:16. > :00:20.This morning on Crimewatch Roadshow... A rogue trader who

:00:20. > :00:30.ripped up a retired couple's driveway before ripping them off

:00:30. > :00:48.

:00:49. > :00:52.Hello. And welcome to Crimewatch Roadshow. We're live and as usual

:00:52. > :00:55.we're asking for your help to catch those criminals who think they've

:00:55. > :00:59.got away with it. Let's make sure they don't. On the programme

:00:59. > :01:03.today... Nikitta Grender was killed last year while heavily pregnant, a

:01:03. > :01:09.murder which shook the nation. We talk to the family liaison officer

:01:09. > :01:15.who supported her parents. The thief who joined prayers at a

:01:15. > :01:19.mosque. He came back later to steal from them. We have it all on CCTV.

:01:19. > :01:24.And the pensioners who were victims of a very elaborate scam. Instead

:01:24. > :01:31.of getting a new Drive, they were conned for thousands of pounds. We

:01:31. > :01:33.need your help to catch the rogues responsible. The roadshow team are

:01:34. > :01:36.out travelling the country for a month, investigating crime where

:01:36. > :01:40.you are. They were in Wiltshire yesterday. Today we've crossed the

:01:40. > :01:44.border into Wales. Dave Guest is in charge out on the road. So where

:01:44. > :01:47.exactly are you today Dave? Hi Rav. Today we're with Gwent Police in

:01:47. > :01:55.the centre of Newport. It's fairly bustling here in the town centre.

:01:55. > :02:00.This is the first of three days here in Wales. These things have

:02:00. > :02:04.become familiar in the UK. Later we will tell you how cash machines are

:02:04. > :02:13.becoming a major target for criminals. We also joined by a new

:02:13. > :02:16.member of the team today, Nicholas Smith. -- Nicola Smith from BBC

:02:16. > :02:20.Wales who's joining me for the rest of the week. Nicola. Thanks Dave.

:02:20. > :02:24.Yes, I've been a reporter on this patch for years. And later we'll be

:02:24. > :02:27.appealing for help on a theft from a mosque which is just up the road

:02:27. > :02:30.from here. Rav. Thanks Nicola. Now our first appeal

:02:30. > :02:33.today. And it's the tale of rogues who promised a retired couple

:02:33. > :02:43.they'd repair their driveway. Instead they led them a merry dance

:02:43. > :02:44.

:02:44. > :02:47.before fleecing them for thousands of pounds. I think it is a scam

:02:47. > :02:52.that has probably been used countless times and will carry on

:02:52. > :02:59.being used. How could I have fallen for such a stupid thing? I was

:02:59. > :03:05.livid about it! Anybody seen a red- headed gentleman with a fawn jacket,

:03:05. > :03:11.please let me know. Maureen and Eric James have lived in the same

:03:11. > :03:16.house near Newport for 52 years. Due to their work with the church

:03:16. > :03:20.and local community groups they are well known in the area. It is not

:03:20. > :03:29.often strangers drop by. But one caller would betray their trust and

:03:29. > :03:34.con them out of thousands of pounds. On Saturday 19th made, 2012, Mr

:03:34. > :03:39.James was in his front garden when a male drove past in a small white

:03:39. > :03:44.van and parked just by his neighbour's home. There it's

:03:44. > :03:54.original block paving was five years old and looked worn. --

:03:54. > :04:01.Eric's. A white van pulled up and a gentleman got out and said I have

:04:01. > :04:05.been looking on my laptop and we did this about five years ago. He

:04:05. > :04:09.was a ginger haired gentlemen, I remember that well. He said the

:04:09. > :04:14.guarantee was up. The is was the first part of the scam, the mention

:04:14. > :04:20.of a guarantee on the dry voice barked Eric's attention. He had

:04:20. > :04:26.been given the impression the repairs would be done for free. The

:04:26. > :04:31.seed had been sown. The man called himself Chris. There was a

:04:31. > :04:38.discussion about the driveway, nothing solid was agreed. Now the

:04:38. > :04:45.second part of the scam. The man told Eric the damage driveway would

:04:45. > :04:49.only need a small amount of work. - - damaged. Under guarantee we would

:04:49. > :04:55.only have to put some dustbin and build it up to get it more firm,

:04:55. > :05:00.that would be OK. -- dust in. He said he would come back next week.

:05:00. > :05:08.He told Eric he would send a member of the team round to doing

:05:08. > :05:15.valuation. -- do a valuation. A did not agree to any work, just that he

:05:15. > :05:19.would come back and say what they could do. Chris left and the trap

:05:19. > :05:22.was set. Eric and Maureen were about become victims of a Kroll

:05:22. > :05:31.scam. This was just the start of their ordeal and their trusting

:05:31. > :05:36.natures would be well and truly abused -- of Kroll scam. Mrs James

:05:36. > :05:43.was at home alone cleaning when she heard a noise outside. She came out

:05:43. > :05:46.and saw a man taking up the block paving on the driveway. I was

:05:46. > :05:53.upstairs cleaning, I came down to put stuff in the washing machine

:05:53. > :06:02.and heard a noise. I looked out of the kitchen window and there was a

:06:02. > :06:10.man on the drive digging up the drive. What are you doing? Doing

:06:10. > :06:14.the drive. But somebody asked you to? That would be a shock to anyone.

:06:14. > :06:19.And later in the programme you can find out what happened next. First

:06:19. > :06:26.up, Warren Jones. Police have been looking for him for the past six

:06:26. > :06:30.years. He was due to appear before Preston Crown court in February

:06:30. > :06:33.2006 in connection with a charge of Actual Bodily Harm but he didn't

:06:33. > :06:37.turn up. He has tattoos on his right arm of a skull with "United"

:06:37. > :06:40.above it and a heart with "true love Karla" written on it. Do you

:06:40. > :06:43.know where Jones is now? Our next two wanted faces are connected.

:06:43. > :06:45.Roman Sojak and Lucas Mirga are both wanted by detectives in

:06:45. > :06:49.Lancashire in connection with affray and possessing an offensive

:06:49. > :06:51.weapon. They failed to appear in court in November last year and

:06:51. > :06:54.warrants were issued for their arrest. Both men have Polish

:06:54. > :06:58.accents and Sojak has tattoos of faces on his arms. They have

:06:58. > :07:01.connections to the Preston area but could be anywhere in the country.

:07:01. > :07:09.Have you seen them recently? Our last wanted face today is this man,

:07:09. > :07:12.Scott Hamshire. Detectives from six different police forces want to

:07:12. > :07:15.speak to him in connection with a series of thefts from supermarket

:07:15. > :07:18.tills totalling over 25,000. He has connections to the Essex area,

:07:19. > :07:22.particularly Dagenham and Rainham. But where is he now? If you know

:07:22. > :07:26.where any of these wanted faces are, please get in touch. The number to

:07:26. > :07:29.call is... 08000 468 999. Or text us on 63399. Text CW, space and

:07:29. > :07:32.then your message. And please, leave the space or your message

:07:32. > :07:39.won't get through to us. Or, email us. CWR@bbc.co.uk. Now back to

:07:39. > :07:42.Nicola in Newport. Thanks Rav. Now South Wales has a huge population.

:07:42. > :07:45.Many people live in the valleys, and commute to the big cities of

:07:45. > :07:54.Newport, Cardiff and Swansea to work. Such a large population

:07:54. > :07:58.provides the forces here with a wide of range challenges. Tucked

:07:58. > :08:03.into the south-east corner of Wales, Gwent Police had a mixture of urban

:08:03. > :08:08.and rural areas, over 600 square miles in size. The force is led by

:08:08. > :08:13.one of the few female chief constables in the UK. Our focus is

:08:13. > :08:18.on the priority crime areas in relation to burglaries, violent

:08:18. > :08:22.crime and making the area and environment that is safe. We will

:08:22. > :08:26.follow Gwent officers as they target scrap dealers in the fight

:08:26. > :08:29.against metal theft. We have so much on board I do not think you

:08:29. > :08:34.can account for it. And we take a look at the sometimes forgotten

:08:34. > :08:41.side of policing. Caring for victims and their families.

:08:41. > :08:44.never dealt with it, I don't think we ever will. Over the border, we

:08:44. > :08:50.will also join the neighbouring South Wales police force as they

:08:50. > :08:54.face the challenges of policing a major capital city. A nearly 200

:08:54. > :08:58.times a year we are concerned with Premiership football, Six Nations

:08:59. > :09:04.rugby, Royal and VIP visits. Police in a capital city is a privilege

:09:04. > :09:09.but it has demands on the force and we respond professionally to those.

:09:09. > :09:16.We also look at the ground-breaking work being done at the forensic

:09:16. > :09:20.support unit, jointly run by both forces. Or we are looking to see if

:09:20. > :09:26.the detail within the crime scene marks and if there is any

:09:26. > :09:35.identifiable features. And as usual, local police officers will appeal

:09:35. > :09:40.for your help to solve crime in the area. South Wales Police urgently

:09:40. > :09:44.need your help with this next crime. It happened very recently - just

:09:44. > :09:46.over two weeks ago on Tuesday 12th June when a cash machine outside a

:09:46. > :09:50.Waitrose store in Cardiff was targeted in broad daylight. They

:09:50. > :09:53.got away with a substantial amount of money and the robbers are still

:09:53. > :09:57.at large. Now we've got some CCTV of the incident. Now the first

:09:57. > :10:01.thing we see is the security van pulling up outside the store. A

:10:01. > :10:07.security guard gets out and goes to the back of the van to pull out the

:10:07. > :10:09.first case of cash he's going to be putting into the cash machine.

:10:10. > :10:12.There's another guard there and they spend around fifteen minutes

:10:12. > :10:15.filing the cash machine from the security can. Then the thieves

:10:15. > :10:19.strike. And here they come. The white transit van pulls up

:10:20. > :10:23.alongside the security van. You can see one man getting out of the

:10:23. > :10:26.passenger seat and another three jump out of the side door. They run

:10:26. > :10:30.towards the cash machine. Now you can't see this on camera but they

:10:30. > :10:35.wait for the security guards to co me out of the ATM pod. They then

:10:35. > :10:39.punch one of them and pin the other one against the wall. They grab

:10:39. > :10:42.five cases of cash and run back to the van, which by then has been

:10:42. > :10:46.turned around. And they make their escape... And off they go. DS Rob

:10:46. > :10:50.Cronick is one of the investigating officers. You have a case similar

:10:50. > :10:55.to the one that went missing. five of them. This was a violent

:10:55. > :10:59.attack. Three of the men have Liverpool accents, two wearing

:10:59. > :11:04.orange railway clothing but in particular, the driver has a mole

:11:04. > :11:12.on the right side of his face, on his cheekbone. We must find them.

:11:12. > :11:15.Where was the white van abandoned? It was found abandoned and secured

:11:15. > :11:25.on Hollybush Heights near the scene. We suspect they have driven away in

:11:25. > :11:36.

:11:36. > :11:45.Strangely, a child's body was found in the back. By it is unusual. --

:11:45. > :11:55.Yes, that push chair belongs to somebody. We need to find that it

:11:55. > :12:07.

:12:07. > :12:11.was. This ban was also used in Chester in a robbery on 18th May.

:12:11. > :12:17.Plenty of clues there. We need to find these men because they could

:12:17. > :12:27.be doing it again. For Ben Duke. Lot of clues there. Were you around

:12:27. > :12:36.

:12:36. > :12:39.on 18th May been Chester or June fall off in Cardiff? -- 12th.

:12:39. > :12:42.Hopefully you can help us with some leads on that robbery. Now an

:12:42. > :12:45.appeal from Hertfordshire Police about a very nasty con. The

:12:45. > :12:48.deception involves lying to people to get hold of their PIN number. DC

:12:48. > :12:51.Rebecca Primrose from Hertfordshire Police is here and Rebecca you're

:12:51. > :12:55.aware of five of these cons which have all happened this year. Yes,

:12:55. > :12:59.we have five different fraud cases from the St Alban's area which have

:13:00. > :13:02.an identical modus operandi. They happened in April this year. It

:13:02. > :13:05.basically involves the offender making a call to the victim's

:13:05. > :13:08.landline claiming to be from the bank security department and

:13:08. > :13:14.telling them the card has been cloned and fraudulently used.

:13:14. > :13:18.victims are vulnerable and in the same area. They are all over 80 and

:13:18. > :13:22.all in the St Albans area and all the locations are close to each

:13:22. > :13:29.other. The call sounds convincing to these people. They are talking

:13:29. > :13:32.about machinery, technology they use and so on. What are they doing?

:13:32. > :13:36.The tale the victim they should never give their PIN number out but

:13:36. > :13:40.then go on to ask them to enter the number into their hands set to

:13:40. > :13:43.confirm the identity which a bank would never do. The victim then

:13:43. > :13:46.enters the PIN number into the phone and the offenders had

:13:46. > :13:52.somewhere of decoding that at the other end and they then have the

:13:53. > :13:57.PIN number. And it is rubbish, of course, but a good ruse. Then they

:13:57. > :14:00.actually sense somebody round, don't they? They then confirm to

:14:00. > :14:03.the victim that your card has been fraudulently used and we will send

:14:03. > :14:06.somebody round to the house to collect it so the bank can

:14:07. > :14:12.investigate the matter. So somebody claims to be a courier, collects

:14:12. > :14:22.the card, then goes away. Here we have some CCTV picture of somebody

:14:22. > :14:25.

:14:25. > :14:31.We don't have this is the person but they are using a stolen card.

:14:31. > :14:34.He matches the description provided by each victim of the person. We

:14:34. > :14:43.are keen to speak with that person to identify them and also the

:14:43. > :14:48.female in the footage with him. have a female and a male. They fit

:14:48. > :14:54.the description. The description of the person who comes to collect the

:14:54. > :14:57.card is an Asian male in his late twenties, early 30s, chubby built,

:14:57. > :15:00.approximately five foot seven and the person who collects the card

:15:00. > :15:10.present a business card to the victim bearing the name of Victor a

:15:10. > :15:13.

:15:13. > :15:20.Hopefully someone can help out. Someone must recognise those two.

:15:20. > :15:25.Still to come, Nikitta Grender was murdered last year while expecting

:15:25. > :15:30.her first child. Her parents speak about their ordeal following the

:15:30. > :15:34.loss of a daughter and granddaughter. We find out how

:15:34. > :15:42.rogue traders persuaded an elderly couple to hand over thousands of

:15:42. > :15:48.pounds. And he prayed with them, but he was not there to worship.

:15:48. > :15:56.Help us track down the man who stole from a mosque. Time for some

:15:56. > :16:01.dodgy deeds caught on CCTV. This one will really make you sick.

:16:01. > :16:06.University College Hospital in London. Look at at hand gelled

:16:06. > :16:11.dispenser. These men are showing a bizarre interest in it. It seems

:16:11. > :16:18.they are trying to get it from the wall, possibly because it contains

:16:19. > :16:24.alcohol. Eventually they get it, causing 500 worth of damage. If

:16:24. > :16:29.you recognise these men, helped the police.

:16:29. > :16:33.Next, we are in Norwich in February this year and a man barges into

:16:33. > :16:40.convenience stores. He is brandishing what is possibly a

:16:40. > :16:48.firearm covered with black material. He demands cash and he wants it now.

:16:48. > :16:55.His voice is picked up by the camera. When he reaches over to the

:16:55. > :17:03.tale, there is a number 72 on the sleeve of his top. Help police stop

:17:03. > :17:09.this thief in his tracks. The kitchen of her hairdresser's in

:17:09. > :17:14.Alderley Edge in Cheshire. 80s February but this man is not after

:17:14. > :17:22.a short back and sides. He sneaked in to help himself to the handbags

:17:22. > :17:31.of the staff. One, at two, three. The haul includes designer handbags,

:17:31. > :17:37.cash and mobile phones. Who is he? If you recognise anyone or anything

:17:37. > :17:42.in those videos, you know what you need to do. Now back to Nicola in

:17:42. > :17:47.Newport. Early last year this city was

:17:47. > :17:51.shaken to the core by the murder of a young pregnant woman, and it is

:17:51. > :17:56.one of the more shocking cases I have ever come across. While the

:17:56. > :18:01.police were working to track down the murderer, behind the scenes,

:18:01. > :18:08.one of the key members of their team, the family liaison officer,

:18:08. > :18:14.was supporting her parents. In February 2011, Nikitta Grender was

:18:14. > :18:21.brutally raped and murdered before her house was set on fire. She was

:18:21. > :18:27.due to give birth two weeks later. We will never deal with it.

:18:27. > :18:33.Obviously it was mind-blowing. went along with the family liaison

:18:33. > :18:38.officer, at Ian Hodgkinson, to need Nikitta's parents and find out

:18:38. > :18:42.their story. The family liaison officers provide support to people

:18:42. > :18:47.who have been affected by major crime as well as finding out what

:18:47. > :18:54.they can from the family that could help the investigation. I am a

:18:54. > :19:01.police officer, but I am still a father. It is a traumatic time.

:19:01. > :19:06.was 19, in the prime of life, pregnant with her baby daughter.

:19:06. > :19:10.But when police were called to Nikitta Grender's flat in February

:19:10. > :19:16.last year, they found her in the burned-out bedroom. She and her

:19:16. > :19:21.unborn baby were both dead. Immediately after the discovery of

:19:21. > :19:26.her body, suspicions were raised that she may have been murdered.

:19:26. > :19:32.How do you get called on to a particular investigation? On Sunday

:19:32. > :19:37.morning, I had a call asking if I would attend. His first job was to

:19:37. > :19:42.introduce himself to the parents of Nikitta. What were your first

:19:42. > :19:46.impressions? My first impressions were I thought he was going to be

:19:46. > :19:54.like a normal police officer, but he ended up being a pretty good

:19:54. > :19:58.friend. How do you the, family liaison officer? It is something

:19:58. > :20:03.you are asked to do and you put yourself forward to do. You are a

:20:03. > :20:10.link between the investigating team and the family. You need to update

:20:10. > :20:15.the family all the time. What did he do for you? He got to know us on

:20:15. > :20:23.a personal level. He found out about us and other members of the

:20:23. > :20:27.family that he meant. The role of a family liaison officer is not just

:20:27. > :20:33.to offer emotional support during the terrible ordeal of having a

:20:33. > :20:37.loved one taken away. It is to ensure that any information the

:20:37. > :20:42.family has is passed on to the investigating officer. I needed

:20:42. > :20:47.information very quickly as to what the family knew, I needed a

:20:47. > :20:52.background history. I needed to know the day-to-day activities of

:20:52. > :20:58.the victim because those things eventually lead us to the killer.

:20:58. > :21:04.As the investigation continued, Nikitta's parents as to see Nikitta

:21:04. > :21:10.and her unborn child. Unfortunately, because of the circumstances, it

:21:10. > :21:17.was not possible for the family to see Nikitta. But they did get to

:21:17. > :21:24.hold the child. It was very emotional. There was someone with

:21:24. > :21:29.us. It stopped us from being on our own. Carl Whant, the cousin of

:21:29. > :21:34.Nikitta's boyfriend, was arrested a few days into the investigation.

:21:34. > :21:38.This was a dramatic turn in the investigation. He arrived the day

:21:39. > :21:45.after her murder to deliver flowers, before the investigators knew he

:21:45. > :21:50.was responsible. It was up to the family liaison officer to break the

:21:50. > :21:56.news 2 Nikitta's parents. He must have had to tell you some

:21:56. > :22:03.incredibly different things? He was more like a friend. The things he

:22:03. > :22:08.was telling us seemed easier to accept. As the investigation ended,

:22:08. > :22:13.the trial began and Ian Hodgkinson's will develop to

:22:13. > :22:17.support Nikitta's parents through their continuing ordeal. To get the

:22:17. > :22:22.support from the officer, so they can understand why some of these

:22:22. > :22:26.things are happening. Rather than going in and not

:22:26. > :22:31.knowing what to expect, we knew exactly what to expect. Carl Whant

:22:31. > :22:37.was found guilty of murdering Nikitta Grender. The judge

:22:37. > :22:43.described him as calculating and devious. 35 years, I will remember

:22:43. > :22:49.that, but to me, it is not long enough. Once Carl Whant was sent to

:22:49. > :22:55.prison, the family liaison officer's visits to the family were

:22:55. > :22:58.less frequent. If someone wants to speak to me, they have got my phone

:22:58. > :23:04.number and I am always contactable. We know if there is anything

:23:04. > :23:12.playing on our minds, we can pick up the phone and chat with him.

:23:12. > :23:22.his day-to-day life for you now? Terrible. You have to learn to live

:23:22. > :23:24.

:23:24. > :23:34.with it. It is hard. People say you get over things. We are never going

:23:34. > :23:36.

:23:36. > :23:41.to get over it. Family liaison officer Ian Hodgkinson joins me now.

:23:41. > :23:47.At terrible experience for any key to's parents but clearly you

:23:47. > :23:52.support was a comfort? I hope so. They have a long way to go. If we

:23:52. > :23:57.help them through the early stages, hopefully we have done our job.

:23:57. > :24:02.do you deal with having to be strong, to be constant for the

:24:02. > :24:05.people you're working with? I work in an organisation with a large

:24:05. > :24:11.team so there is support from within and they are always on hand

:24:11. > :24:16.to give guidance. You work day-to- day in very difficult

:24:16. > :24:22.circumstances? In it is a career I have chosen. I feel comfortable

:24:22. > :24:28.doing the job, but ultimately it is the family we're concerned with.

:24:28. > :24:33.What other kind of situations do you have to deal with? Whatever is

:24:33. > :24:39.dictated by the investigating officers. They could be suicide, a

:24:39. > :24:42.could be any death until we know the circumstances. We offer

:24:43. > :24:48.assistance to the family through the investigation. I imagine that

:24:48. > :24:53.often you have to break the news that a loved one has died? Yes. It

:24:53. > :25:00.is something that is not expected and it is information that we have

:25:00. > :25:05.to pass to the family. We have to be careful. It is hard for you as

:25:05. > :25:09.well as the family's? It can be hard, but we are looked after a

:25:09. > :25:14.very well and there is always someone on hand for us to speak to

:25:14. > :25:18.if it is required. Thank you for joining us this morning.

:25:18. > :25:24.Next, more on the story of a retired couple who were shocked to

:25:24. > :25:29.find their driveway being dug up by a complete stranger. Here is what

:25:29. > :25:34.happened next. Pensioners Maureen and Eric from near Newport had been

:25:34. > :25:39.visited by a man who claimed he was from a paving company. He told

:25:39. > :25:45.Derek that he could carry out some small repairs to the driveway and a

:25:45. > :25:51.guarantee. The following Monday, 21st May, Maureen was in her home

:25:51. > :25:56.cleaning when she heard a noise outside. When she came out she saw

:25:57. > :26:02.another Mail on her driveway taking up the paving. I heard a noise

:26:02. > :26:10.outside. I looked out if the kitchen door and there was a fellow

:26:10. > :26:15.it on the driveway. He was just speeding up the driveway. Mrs James

:26:15. > :26:21.was quite shocked. She had not expected anyone to be working on

:26:21. > :26:29.her driveway. The man said that he would call his boss, and shortly

:26:29. > :26:36.afterwards, Mr James returned home. There was a work man on the

:26:36. > :26:43.driveway, taking up the paving. sorted it out and arranged it with

:26:43. > :26:49.you. What is going on? I started talking to him and he got hold of

:26:49. > :26:54.for the boss and told him that that he would come. The boss said that

:26:54. > :26:59.he would be along shortly. When the boss turned up, Eric would be in

:26:59. > :27:05.for a nasty shock. The simple cosmetic job they discussed was

:27:05. > :27:09.spiralling out of control. He said, we have a problem, and we

:27:09. > :27:19.will have to go deeper and build up and relaid the brakes on top of

:27:19. > :27:25.that. -- and Lady paving on top of that. I kept asking him, how much

:27:25. > :27:31.will it cost? He came up with a price of 4,500 and it has to be in

:27:31. > :27:36.cash. They told aerate it had to be in cash so they could get the

:27:36. > :27:41.building materials cheaper. There was just time for one last element

:27:41. > :27:51.to this elaborate scam which would stop the couple getting suspicious.

:27:51. > :27:52.

:27:52. > :27:56.The cement mixture -- the cement mixer turned up and it left quickly,

:27:57. > :28:02.before it was used. It may have given the operation more

:28:02. > :28:07.credibility. The couple went off to collect the cash and they were soon

:28:07. > :28:12.back to hand over the cash. As honest people themselves, they

:28:12. > :28:19.realised that as have the driveway had been lifted, the men were bound

:28:19. > :28:28.to finish the work. At 12 o'clock, the work men were still here. My

:28:28. > :28:35.wife and I told him that the money was here, what do you want done?

:28:35. > :28:42.What is happening? He said, can you give the money to

:28:42. > :28:49.the work men? I said, yes. I gave him the money, and he said, we will

:28:49. > :28:55.be back later. The final part of the money -- the final part of the

:28:55. > :29:02.scam, getting the money. The couple had handed over a sizable part of

:29:02. > :29:05.their retirement fund. We thought they would go to the suppliers. We

:29:05. > :29:13.thought they would collect the materials necessary and bring them

:29:13. > :29:23.back and start the work. With 4,500 of the couple's money in his

:29:23. > :29:23.

:29:23. > :29:29.pocket, the work man left to get the building materials on foot.

:29:29. > :29:39.have not seen him since. When the builders had not returned after two

:29:39. > :29:42.

:29:42. > :29:48.errors, the couple realised they had been scammed. -- two hours.

:29:48. > :29:54.is a particularly nasty crime. The individuals involved have targeted

:29:54. > :29:58.a couple who have worked hard all their lives. The problem is that

:29:58. > :30:06.you believe people, you think they are honest, you believe what they

:30:06. > :30:12.say and you accept it on face value. How could I have possibly have

:30:12. > :30:18.fallen for such a stupid thing. I was livid about it. If I could get

:30:19. > :30:27.hold of them, I would have I have Detective Inspector Justin

:30:27. > :30:32.O'Keefe here with me now. This wasn't just work then doing a bad

:30:32. > :30:42.job, was it, this was a crime. left in no doubt it was. I may let

:30:42. > :30:43.

:30:43. > :30:51.the place in a mess. -- and they left the place in a mess. They were

:30:51. > :30:55.4,500 out of pocket as well as the cost of clearing up the mess.

:30:55. > :31:00.left behind vital evidence, didn't they? The a did. They left items at

:31:00. > :31:04.the scene. Mr James got them to sign a receipt, there were other

:31:04. > :31:08.items recovered that we believe they have handled and those have

:31:08. > :31:12.been explored for forensic opportunities. For DNA. If you get

:31:12. > :31:15.to sample it means you can eliminate anybody we bring in who

:31:15. > :31:22.is innocent. Correct. A any evidence this has happened

:31:22. > :31:26.elsewhere? Thankfully we are lucky this is a rare event in Gwent. But

:31:26. > :31:29.these things do go on around the country and we are looking to tried

:31:29. > :31:35.to investigate as many opportunities and links as we can.

:31:35. > :31:39.What advice can you give to people? Don't pay money upfront. If you are

:31:39. > :31:49.getting work, get references and if you are unsure of the people

:31:49. > :31:57.

:31:57. > :32:01.working for you, please ring. A betting shop in Dalston,

:32:01. > :32:05.Northampton. A man props up his bike and comes inside, face covered.

:32:05. > :32:10.He produces what witnesses say is looks like a barrel of a gun. No

:32:10. > :32:14.joy the first time so he moves to the female cashier but no winnings

:32:14. > :32:18.there, either. So he has no choice but to cut his losses and leave

:32:18. > :32:26.empty handed. If you know this would-be thief take a punt and give

:32:26. > :32:29.us a name. January last year, Sheffield community centre in

:32:29. > :32:34.Stevenage, Hertfordshire. These to try to get in the front entrance

:32:34. > :32:39.but fail. They have more success round the back. Once inside they

:32:39. > :32:44.still some alcohol. But it is about to get nastier. When they come

:32:44. > :32:48.across a woman who works there they let a fire extinguisher off in her

:32:48. > :32:54.face. They won the keys to the safe. They don't get them and leave the

:32:54. > :32:59.just the alcohol but these two must be Court. -- they want. If you

:32:59. > :33:06.recognise these men, all their clothes, names please. April this

:33:06. > :33:11.year in Suffolk. It is the dead of night. But it is not quiet for long.

:33:11. > :33:17.Someone has stolen a bigger and is now driving at and 80 m on a bank

:33:17. > :33:21.wall. The driver rams the ATM with considerable determination. Yes,

:33:22. > :33:28.the police have been digging around but they still need information

:33:28. > :33:32.about these heavy duty vandals. Now as you saw in that last CCTV clip

:33:32. > :33:35.of those clowns smashing a JCB in to a bank, cash machines are real

:33:35. > :33:40.magnets for criminals. And Nicola has some advice for you now on how

:33:40. > :33:50.to keep yourself safe. There are 64,500 cash machines around the UK

:33:50. > :33:50.

:33:50. > :33:54.As organised gangs go after your cash, we have got some advice for

:33:54. > :33:58.you on how to avoid getting ripped off when you're getting some cash

:33:58. > :34:01.out of the hole in the wall. I'm with Tony Blake who is from the

:34:01. > :34:04.Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit, a joint body of police and

:34:04. > :34:13.banks that helps stamp out organised card and cheque fraud

:34:13. > :34:18.across the UK. Good morning. We have our cash machine. What should

:34:18. > :34:23.I look out for? Firstly using a cash machine is a safe thing to do

:34:23. > :34:27.but sometimes criminals fit cameras above the pin pad. So make sure you

:34:27. > :34:32.cover your pen properly, not just half covering it. Make sure you

:34:32. > :34:35.cover it properly to get away from these cameras. There so I am

:34:35. > :34:43.putting my card in the machine. We have a hidden camera in this

:34:43. > :34:48.machine so you can see what the bad guys see, I suppose. How did I do?

:34:48. > :34:52.Not too well. You half covered the PIN number, but my tip to people is

:34:52. > :34:56.put your wallet or purse across it and then put your hand underneath.

:34:56. > :35:02.The cameras will not pick it up. These cameras are hidden, you will

:35:02. > :35:06.not see them. Don't look for the cameras, just make sure you cover

:35:06. > :35:14.the PIN number properly with your wallet, or purse. Not with your

:35:14. > :35:17.hand, they can still get your number. A what about the card?

:35:17. > :35:21.Criminals can use an electronic device to get details from the

:35:21. > :35:24.magnetic stripe on your card and the other way as they track the

:35:24. > :35:27.Cardena machine so if your card does not come at it is possibly

:35:28. > :35:33.been captured by a criminal. So make sure you have the phone number

:35:33. > :35:36.of your bank so you can call them straight away before you leave the

:35:36. > :35:44.machine. Once you have walked away the criminals take your card and if

:35:44. > :35:49.they have your PIN number they can use it. Thank you. Really useful

:35:49. > :35:54.device. Dave has a story now that shows that to some criminals

:35:54. > :35:59.nothing is sacred. We need your help to catch a thief who targeted

:35:59. > :36:03.a local mosque. One just up the road from here. A stranger turned

:36:03. > :36:07.up to worship at the Central Newport mosque. He was welcomed

:36:07. > :36:17.there by the people with open arms. Little could they have suspected he

:36:17. > :36:23.

:36:23. > :36:26.was not just interested in worshipping. A designer of the

:36:26. > :36:31.mosque. Everybody is welcome. everyone is welcome from all

:36:31. > :36:39.different races. The doing this any place of worship is unacceptable.

:36:39. > :36:44.By Saturday 19th May worshippers arrived at the Jam-e Masjid mosque

:36:44. > :36:52.as usual for open prev. Worshippers paid little attention to this

:36:52. > :36:56.newcomer as the mosque has an open- door policy. You trust people who

:36:56. > :37:02.come here because it is a spiritual time. Sadly, they would remember

:37:02. > :37:07.this particular stranger for the wrong reasons. Prayers had begun

:37:07. > :37:14.but rather than join in the intruder slipped out of the few and

:37:14. > :37:17.made his way downstairs -- view. He opened a back door, leaving it open,

:37:18. > :37:22.police say the stranger clearly planned to return later. He then

:37:22. > :37:27.headed upstairs and joined the other worshippers. Halfway through

:37:27. > :37:37.prayers the other person came in, carried on praying as normal, but

:37:37. > :37:39.

:37:39. > :37:46.His clothes to doubt a little bit compared to what people normally

:37:46. > :37:50.wear here. He had a typical Arabian her dress, his face was obscured,

:37:50. > :37:56.typical white robe that was when people wear. It stuck out a bit but

:37:56. > :37:59.not in a negative way, just not normal here. Although an unfamiliar

:37:59. > :38:07.face, the worshippers did not suspect that the stranger joining

:38:07. > :38:12.them in prayer was simply taking advantage of their welcome. After

:38:12. > :38:17.prayers the congregation left, leaving the Imam to lock the mask

:38:17. > :38:24.as usual. Little did he know the back door was ajar, which would

:38:24. > :38:29.make it easy for the stranger to get back in. Just 10 minutes later

:38:29. > :38:33.CCTV picks up a man in the alleyway behind the mask. Although wearing

:38:33. > :38:39.different clothes, police believe he is the same person who had

:38:39. > :38:45.joined evening prayers are earlier. When he returned to the building it

:38:45. > :38:51.is obvious he is aware of the CCTV cameras. We clearly Court and on

:38:51. > :38:54.hour surveillance camera so we could see what he did. -- caught

:38:55. > :38:58.him. It is hard not to see him coming in and out. The tries to

:38:58. > :39:03.avoid it and goes to the top floor of the building. He spends about 18

:39:03. > :39:09.minutes in the building looking around. He returns to the middle

:39:09. > :39:16.floor of the building and commits the burglary. Out of sight of the

:39:16. > :39:23.cameras the intruder set about breaking into the office. He broke

:39:23. > :39:28.into a filing cabinet and still about 200. He also stole a small

:39:28. > :39:35.mobile phone. The hats too late, he cut a CCTV camera cable while

:39:35. > :39:38.making his escape. -- perhaps too late. It is pointless. We have him

:39:38. > :39:42.for more than 20 minutes in the building before the burglary and

:39:42. > :39:46.when he enters for the burglary again. Less than two hours later,

:39:46. > :39:51.when the worshippers returned for evening prayers, they were dismayed

:39:51. > :39:56.by what they found. The reaction was shock and horror. The you never

:39:56. > :40:00.expected to happen in a place of worship. -- you never. You don't

:40:00. > :40:04.expect somebody to come in and burgle the place, someone who

:40:05. > :40:11.preyed next two. We don't believe he has been to the mosque before.

:40:11. > :40:14.He is a stranger from the street. None of the other person's he used

:40:14. > :40:19.the mosque recognise him. intruder left with more than a

:40:19. > :40:23.phone and money, he took with him the trust of a once open community.

:40:23. > :40:30.Sadly the mosque has been forced to review security and can no longer

:40:30. > :40:35.leave their doors open. I have Yusuf Hall and Mujahida Ali who are

:40:35. > :40:40.worshippers at the Mosque with me now. I suspect you feel betrayed?

:40:40. > :40:46.Were do. He has betrayed a principle which is worse than

:40:46. > :40:51.betraying a person, or people -- we do. He has also risk tarnishing our

:40:52. > :40:54.society. You had the CCTV put in when you opened the mask, you are

:40:54. > :40:59.glad about that now because you have vital evidence. The definitely.

:40:59. > :41:03.It is the first time we have had to use it. We are delighted that the

:41:03. > :41:08.results. Was there anything distinctive about this man? He was

:41:08. > :41:14.very tall. His dress code was what you would see typically worn in the

:41:14. > :41:18.Middle East which does not seem too common in the local area. Other

:41:18. > :41:24.than that he fitted in well. turned up part-way through prayers,

:41:24. > :41:30.is that normal? It is quite normal. People during prayers throughout

:41:31. > :41:35.the duration. Has this made you more suspicious about welcoming

:41:35. > :41:40.strangers to your Moscow? really. It defeats the object of

:41:40. > :41:45.everything, we are an open Moss, we welcome anybody to come and worship.

:41:45. > :41:55.-- mosque. You still welcome strangers. Let's hope we get a

:41:55. > :42:03.

:42:03. > :42:06.Just an update... We have been getting names on the Waitrose

:42:06. > :42:11.robbery and the men who conned the elderly couple out of thousands of

:42:11. > :42:15.pounds. They did that by digging up their drive. A police officer has

:42:15. > :42:19.got in touch with information on the man who stole from the Newport

:42:19. > :42:23.mosque. So we had just heard from Dave they're speaking to the guys

:42:23. > :42:26.from the mosque. That really encouraging. Thank you to everyone

:42:26. > :42:30.who got in touch. What are you doing tomorrow? Were are moving on

:42:30. > :42:34.to Swansea tomorrow. We will discover how police and scientists

:42:35. > :42:38.are using advances in technology to help track criminals through these,

:42:38. > :42:42.apparently shoe prints can be as unique as fingerprints and may have

:42:42. > :42:45.been using them to get some convictions. And we out with the

:42:45. > :42:54.officers clamping down on scrap- metal dealers. There are sure you

:42:54. > :42:58.join us. So sounds good. -- make sure. That's it for today. Head to
