:00:17. > :00:27.unusual and frightening attack by a young mother in Manchester. -- on a

:00:27. > :00:44.

:00:44. > :00:47.are live and on air every week day morning tackling everyday crimes. We

:00:47. > :00:53.need your help to track down the criminals whose actions affect us

:00:53. > :00:59.all. On the programme today. A terrifying ordeal for a young

:00:59. > :01:03.mother, dragged into a car and assaulted.

:01:03. > :01:10.A night out in the city, how Manchester police keep the streets

:01:10. > :01:14.safe on a Saturday night. And the big-time metal thieves

:01:14. > :01:18.targeted in a massive police operation.

:01:18. > :01:26.The roadshow team is travelling the country and today is our last day

:01:26. > :01:29.with Greater Manchester police. Xiang, good morning, where are you?

:01:29. > :01:37.I am in St Ann's Square in the heart of Manchester City centre, and today

:01:37. > :01:39.we are going to be finding out how this city is policed by day and by

:01:39. > :01:45.night. And how the officers here tackle shoplifting and bike crime.

:01:45. > :01:49.That sounds good. We are looking for the men who assaulted a young

:01:49. > :01:53.mother. Lisa from East Manchester was left so traumatised by what

:01:53. > :01:59.happened that we have changed her real name to protect her identity.

:01:59. > :02:05.It was pure fright. It was nothing I had never experienced before. It was

:02:05. > :02:14.really terrifying. She had been targeted by the individuals in this

:02:14. > :02:17.vehicle. There would appear to be a sexual motive behind it. I started

:02:17. > :02:23.to cry a lot and I tried to scream a lot more, I thought this was my last

:02:23. > :02:28.chance to get away. Saturday the 9th of March, Lisa and her partner had

:02:28. > :02:33.been enjoying a quiet night out in Manchester. We went to meet a few

:02:33. > :02:39.friends, we had a baby-sitter, we went out and had a couple of drinks.

:02:39. > :02:47.Lisa did not feel 100% soap around ten o'clock, the couple headed home

:02:47. > :02:51.via the local takeaway. -- so around ten o'clock. We went inside the

:02:51. > :02:55.takeaway and ordered some food. It said it would take about ten minutes

:02:55. > :03:01.because they didn't have what we ordered ready. My partner said he

:03:01. > :03:07.needed the toilet. As they live just around the corner, he popped home

:03:07. > :03:13.and said he would return before the food was ready. A couple of minutes

:03:13. > :03:19.after my partner left, the food was ready. So I just decided to come out

:03:19. > :03:24.of the takeaway and, home. It has always been fine, it is a really

:03:24. > :03:34.nice area, never any trouble, you never hear of anything. Lisa began

:03:34. > :03:38.

:03:38. > :03:43.walking home alone. I began to walk down towards my house. I noticed a

:03:43. > :03:50.black VW Golf pull up. I didn't think anything of it at the time. I

:03:50. > :03:55.only noticed it when it started to reverse the way I was walking.

:03:55. > :04:01.now, Lisa was starting to feel a little uneasy. She did not know the

:04:01. > :04:07.car or the people in it. I walked maybe ten or 15 steps and it

:04:07. > :04:13.followed me really slowly all the way back. Where are you headed, do

:04:13. > :04:19.you want a lift? No thank you. I picked up my pace and that is when I

:04:19. > :04:25.heard the car door and footsteps behind me. What happened next turned

:04:25. > :04:30.Lisa's life completely upside down. One of the men tried to grab her.

:04:30. > :04:39.The next thing I remember, his arm coming around my shoulder. I just

:04:39. > :04:44.froze. And then he tried to put his hand down my top. Which he did. I

:04:44. > :04:53.had a lot of cuts and bruises. bravely fought back but men were not

:04:53. > :05:00.giving up easily. The first man proceeded to drag me into the car.

:05:00. > :05:10.With the second man trying to pull me inside it. I started shouting for

:05:10. > :05:17.my partner, anybody, dad, allsorts. Shut up! That is when the second man

:05:17. > :05:21.let go of my arms and said, leave it, it is not worth it. I was still

:05:21. > :05:28.screaming. I was screaming and crying. I rang my partner

:05:28. > :05:35.straightaway. He couldn't understand a word I was saying. It was awful. I

:05:35. > :05:40.couldn't register. My partner said straightaway, ring the police. I was

:05:40. > :05:49.just sat down against a wall on the pavement, I couldn't stop shaking. I

:05:49. > :05:53.felt dirty. It really did make me feel awful, unclean. But her bravery

:05:53. > :05:58.has been praised by police. This was a very serious incident which could

:05:58. > :06:04.have resulted in farm or serious consequences. It was only due to the

:06:04. > :06:09.courage of the victim -- far more serious consequences. And the fact

:06:09. > :06:16.that she fought away, she got -- fought back, she got away. The

:06:16. > :06:20.vehicle was a black Volkswagen golf but it was a matte black colour

:06:20. > :06:24.rather than shiny. It had alloy wheels and the side windows were

:06:24. > :06:31.tinted. It had a luminous green Volkswagen badge on the bonnet and

:06:31. > :06:34.unusually, it had luminous green windscreen wiper trims. People like

:06:35. > :06:38.that obviously don't have any remorse or anything along those

:06:39. > :06:43.lines. I really would class myself as lucky. What happens to me was

:06:43. > :06:52.horrendous. Apart from a few scrapes and bruises and memories, I actually

:06:52. > :06:56.got away. That relief at escaping the men was short lived. I was about

:06:56. > :07:03.seven weeks pregnant at the time, six or seven weeks pregnant at the

:07:03. > :07:06.time. The hospital did not say how, but I would say the strength of the

:07:06. > :07:13.attack, the way they grabbed me and things like that, I ended up having

:07:13. > :07:19.a miscarriage. Lisa and her partner are now trying to deal with the loss

:07:19. > :07:23.of their baby, while the police are trying to find those responsible.

:07:23. > :07:28.Immolation to offences of this type, they are thankfully very rare. -- in

:07:28. > :07:32.relation to offences. But this is a very serious offence and we need to

:07:33. > :07:37.catch the offenders. Why do it to innocent people and then go on to

:07:37. > :07:41.ruin their lives? It affects every single thing you do. I would not go

:07:41. > :07:45.to the shop by myself, even in the daylight. My doors are always

:07:45. > :07:52.locked. I still haven't been on a night out by myself. I am always out

:07:52. > :07:58.with my partner. This really was a terrifying ordeal and I am joined by

:07:58. > :08:01.DCI Andy Peach who is investigating this case. Truly horrendous for that

:08:01. > :08:04.victim to go through something like this. She has been able to provide

:08:04. > :08:11.you with an awful lot of useful information, particularly about the

:08:11. > :08:18.offenders. . She has. She has described her first attack as being

:08:18. > :08:22.a male of Asian appearance, between 24 and 25, about 5'4" tall and of

:08:22. > :08:28.slim build, although she says he had muscular arms and chest. He had a

:08:28. > :08:38.full face beard about two or three centimetres in length. His hair was

:08:38. > :08:39.

:08:39. > :08:43.dark and short, almost shaven. He had a red regatta waterproof jacket

:08:43. > :08:47.and a pair of maroon trousers. The second individual was also a male of

:08:47. > :08:52.Asian appearance, about 25, considerably taller. He was of

:08:52. > :09:02.medium build and he had short gelled spiky hair. In relation to facial

:09:02. > :09:03.

:09:03. > :09:06.hair, he had a small line from the bottom of his mouth to his chin. He

:09:06. > :09:10.was wearing light-coloured chino trousers. He had a purple hooded top

:09:10. > :09:19.with a white zip and white drawstrings. The driver was a white

:09:19. > :09:25.male. He had a distinctive big wrist watch. The car was pointed out, a

:09:25. > :09:30.black goal. It looked different to this one. We think it looked

:09:30. > :09:36.different. It was matte black, black alloy wheels. The side windows were

:09:36. > :09:40.tinted. It had a one foot dent on the bonnet. The VW badge on the

:09:40. > :09:46.bonnet was in luminous neon green. The windscreen wipers were also

:09:46. > :09:52.luminous green. Show us what was hanging in the rear window. This

:09:52. > :09:58.jellybean air freshener in the rear window. If anybody recognises,

:09:58. > :10:04.please get in touch. It is time to look at today's first

:10:04. > :10:11.set of criminals caught on camera. Early morning on the 20th of

:10:11. > :10:15.November and a dark ray Audi is lurking in the area. -- dark grey.

:10:15. > :10:20.The police believe the occupants are casing the joint. After a while,

:10:20. > :10:24.these early birds are ready for a spot of work. They smashed their way

:10:24. > :10:31.into a house in chase down, Staffordshire, while the owner is

:10:31. > :10:41.still in bed. Within just three minutes, they are out. These

:10:41. > :10:44.

:10:44. > :10:46.shameless thieves make off with their rifles and ten grands worth of

:10:46. > :10:53.jewellery. If you have any information about these chancers or

:10:53. > :10:59.their car, pick up that phone. An office block in Holborn, but this

:10:59. > :11:03.life the -- this slide thief is not here to work. He spots a couple of

:11:03. > :11:11.laptops in the reception area and gets a closer look. He is about to

:11:11. > :11:14.make his move but he is disturbed by a man leaving the building. Our

:11:14. > :11:19.quickwitted thief pretends to be on the phone until the coast is clear.

:11:19. > :11:29.Then he goes actively laptops and takes his chance. Picking them up

:11:29. > :11:38.

:11:38. > :11:44.and making a sharp exit. Do you the bus to tooting. This man is

:11:44. > :11:50.standing next to a pram. Watch as he leans in and has a good rummage

:11:50. > :11:54.around. It is child's play. He finds a purse and puts it in his back

:11:54. > :11:59.pocket. He gets away with the purse containing cash, a driving licence

:11:59. > :12:06.and other documents. Easy as stealing candy from a baby. Do you

:12:06. > :12:16.know this dummy? Charming fellow! If you recognise

:12:16. > :12:32.

:12:32. > :12:39.him or any of the others, get is pretty common to hear about bikes

:12:39. > :12:44.being stolen. Earlier, just down the road from here, there were two

:12:44. > :12:48.unbelievable thefts that took place at the train station. It is January

:12:48. > :12:53.this year at Manchester Piccadilly station. This man is dropping a

:12:53. > :12:56.friend off. But he leaves his engine running as he says good eye. He

:12:56. > :13:03.gives his mate a helping hand with his bags and he shut the boot. The

:13:03. > :13:06.calculating thief seizes his opportunity. He jumps in the car and

:13:06. > :13:13.drives off with the victim still hanging on. Even the barrier doesn't

:13:13. > :13:18.stop him. Three months later, a similar crime at the same train

:13:18. > :13:24.station. Again, someone is dropping off a friend and they leave the keys

:13:24. > :13:31.in the ignition. Watch the top right-hand corner now, as a thief

:13:31. > :13:36.runs towards the car and jumps in. Driving off in the stolen vehicle. I

:13:36. > :13:42.am joined by DS Steve May from British transport police. These were

:13:42. > :13:48.audacious, barefaced crimes. Absolutely astonishing. Yes, very

:13:48. > :13:52.cheeky crimes. But had potentially quite dire consequences. On both

:13:52. > :13:56.occasions, the owners of the vehicle tried to intervene. In the first

:13:56. > :14:04.one, the owner tried to grab hold of the car door and it was given off,

:14:05. > :14:07.injuring his hand. In the second one, the owner tried to get to the

:14:07. > :14:11.front of the car but was threatened by the suspect that he could be

:14:11. > :14:14.driven over if he did not get out of the way. Both vehicles were

:14:14. > :14:20.subsequently seen driving around and recovered in the Salford area of

:14:20. > :14:26.Manchester. In the Salford occasion it was about nine days later.

:14:26. > :14:36.leads do you have? The description of the offender is similar, a white

:14:36. > :14:39.

:14:39. > :14:42.man, probably late 20s or early 30s. His height is difficult to estimate

:14:42. > :14:45.but he is supposed to have sharp features, bald with a shaven head.

:14:45. > :14:55.What would your advice be to anyone who was dropping off in a busy place

:14:55. > :15:00.

:15:00. > :15:05.like a train station or airport? And take the keys out and hopefully we

:15:05. > :15:09.will prevent more of this happening. Good advice.

:15:09. > :15:12.Now let's have a look at a few of the Wanted Faces we have featured

:15:12. > :15:15.this week. We have had some great calls, but still need your help to

:15:15. > :15:18.find these men. 29-year-old Alexander James Edward Dooley is up

:15:18. > :15:22.first. He was due to stand trial at the Old Bailey in April this year,

:15:22. > :15:24.but failed to turn up. He was accused of setting up a website

:15:24. > :15:27.advertising bogus car insurance, which conned 70 young drivers into

:15:27. > :15:35.paying almost 50,000 for worthless policies. Dooley has connections to

:15:35. > :15:37.Manchester and Birmingham. Next is this man, Flogert Farruku.

:15:37. > :15:39.Police want to question him in connection with a cannabis factory

:15:39. > :15:43.in Cardiff, where almost 200,000-worth of plants were

:15:43. > :15:47.discovered. Farruku is originally from Albania and speaks very little

:15:47. > :15:50.English. He has links to the Cardiff and Newport areas of South Wales,

:15:50. > :15:53.but police believe he could be anywhere in the UK.

:15:53. > :15:57.This man, Andrew Stanley Walker, has been wanted by police in North

:15:57. > :16:02.Yorkshire since 2005. They want to question him in connection with

:16:02. > :16:05.allegations of Fraud, carried out using his dead mother's identity. He

:16:05. > :16:08.is described as being six foot tall and of a generally scruffy

:16:08. > :16:13.appearance. He has connections to the Harrogate area, but where is he

:16:13. > :16:16.now? And finally, this is Teddy Simpson.

:16:16. > :16:19.He is wanted for questioning by detectives in London, in connection

:16:19. > :16:23.with an attack on two police officers. His hair is now greyer

:16:23. > :16:28.than in this image, which was taken in 2004. He has a distinctive scar

:16:28. > :16:31.on his left cheek and is described as dangerous. So if you do see him

:16:31. > :16:34.or know where he is, do not approach, just ring the police

:16:34. > :16:38.straightaway. Can you help us catch any of those

:16:38. > :16:42.men? If so, pick up the phone or send us a e-mail. The details are on

:16:42. > :16:45.your screen. Sian. Now, metal theft continues to be a

:16:45. > :16:49.huge problem right across the country. In Manchester, Operation

:16:49. > :16:59.Alloy was set up to tackle it, and we joined the team recently on their

:16:59. > :17:07.

:17:07. > :17:13.Today's operation has been in the planning for a year. Its target is

:17:13. > :17:19.the people behind the big business that is metal theft.

:17:19. > :17:23.It is 7:30 a.m. And we are about to accompany Greater Manchester Police

:17:23. > :17:30.on an early morning raid. Illegal metal theft dealers are about to get

:17:30. > :17:32.a rude awakening! Today, nearly 500 officers, using

:17:32. > :17:38.over 140 vehicles, are being deployed.

:17:38. > :17:42.We are on our way to a scrapyard identified as part of this massive

:17:42. > :17:45.police operation. At the same time, hundreds of officers are on their

:17:45. > :17:50.way to other locations across the Greater Manchester area.

:17:50. > :17:57.Not far from the target, the team is brought to a halt. All units

:17:57. > :18:03.throughout the operation coordinated to swoop at the same time.

:18:03. > :18:06.Finally, everything is in position, and the green light is given. Some

:18:06. > :18:11.teams raid private homes and offices. Tracking the money behind

:18:11. > :18:16.the crime. This team's target is a big scrapyard business and the

:18:16. > :18:21.people running it. The element of surprise works to the advantage of

:18:21. > :18:25.the police, and three people are taken into custody.

:18:25. > :18:29.All three persons have been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen

:18:29. > :18:33.goods and offences under the scrap metal act.

:18:33. > :18:37.They have been taken into custody and for questioning, what happens

:18:37. > :18:41.now? On the ground, we conduct a thorough

:18:41. > :18:46.and systematic search of the premises, looking for the stolen

:18:46. > :18:49.goods that may be of interest. While part of this -- while part of

:18:49. > :18:55.the team get stuck into the paperwork, other officers

:18:55. > :19:01.investigate the scrap metal. Looking for any markings which might

:19:01. > :19:05.identify where it has come from. They all have serial numbers, so we

:19:05. > :19:11.get the experts in to look at that to see if that has come from

:19:11. > :19:17.somewhere it should not have done. They have used a machine to cut it

:19:17. > :19:21.and they remove the proper -- the property from inside.

:19:21. > :19:25.A sophisticated operation, more than people would realise.

:19:25. > :19:27.When it is stripped in this state, it is difficult to prove where it

:19:27. > :19:32.has come from. With one cable looking much like

:19:32. > :19:37.another, police have listed the help of the companies whose cables are

:19:37. > :19:44.often stolen, to help them identify the goods.

:19:44. > :19:47.Even though you may not see a label, we are the only cable company in the

:19:47. > :19:55.north-west using this type of equipment. The cable was pretty much

:19:55. > :19:59.worthless. Cables are marked in various ways

:19:59. > :20:05.and Linda, from BT, can spot hers by the paper tax.

:20:05. > :20:10.You can clearly see that those are the same as those papers.

:20:10. > :20:16.Unmistakable because no other company would have done it. Prior to

:20:16. > :20:22.the 1960s, BT only had these. What is your reaction to finding it

:20:22. > :20:27.here today? Finding stuff! This belongs to

:20:27. > :20:32.Alex's team? How do you know that? You cannot buy

:20:32. > :20:37.this cable out on the Open market. The copper in cabling is worth a lot

:20:37. > :20:41.of money, around 5,000 per tonne, and these do not care where they get

:20:42. > :20:46.it. There have been instances of hospital operations cancelled

:20:46. > :20:51.because of copper cabling stolen. Metal taken from the rail network

:20:51. > :20:53.stops trains from running and communities can lose Internet

:20:53. > :20:59.connections when telecommunications wiring is ripped out.

:20:59. > :21:04.We have done a sweep through the site and we have identified stolen

:21:04. > :21:12.cable which we are now working on the slow process of exhibiting that

:21:12. > :21:16.so it can be used in evidence. In total, around 14,000 in cash was

:21:16. > :21:21.seized in 2,500 tonnes of stolen cable was recovered from 28

:21:21. > :21:23.premises. 20 arrests were made, another small step forward in the

:21:23. > :21:27.never ending fight against metal theft.

:21:27. > :21:36.A great result there. Still to come on today's programme.

:21:36. > :21:39.Late-night policing, when the booze kicks in, the trouble kicks off.

:21:39. > :21:49.And the callous thieves who stole a pensioner's pride and joy, his

:21:49. > :21:52.

:21:52. > :22:00.But first, let's take a look at some sneaky thieves caught on CCTV.

:22:00. > :22:06.Basildon, March 2011, this woman is doing the weekly shopping, but

:22:07. > :22:10.little does she know somebody else is shopping for her belongings. The

:22:10. > :22:16.woman's bag is handing on a hawk on the back of her trolley. Watch this

:22:16. > :22:26.man as he reaches over and grabbed her handbag. Let's have a look. You

:22:26. > :22:33.can see it behind his shopping bags. Do you know this man?

:22:33. > :22:37.March this year, and this couple's out and about browsing in a

:22:37. > :22:40.jewellers in Garstang. Something has caught this man's I am he means

:22:40. > :22:50.over-the-counter and graphs to rings, while his accomplice looks

:22:50. > :22:52.

:22:52. > :22:56.on. -- and graphs. He knows what he wants. Those rings worth 3000.

:22:56. > :23:03.Now it is time for a swift exit, and when they are out on the street, we

:23:03. > :23:10.get a better look at faces. Thanks! If you know this barefaced couple,

:23:10. > :23:16.give us a ring and help us catch these crooks.

:23:16. > :23:26.Alan, south London, and the laptops in the Cabinet have caught the

:23:26. > :23:32.

:23:32. > :23:37.attention of these men. -- Balham. After half an hour of loitering,

:24:10. > :24:13.They are on 0800 555111. Bikes left in public places like

:24:13. > :24:15.this are an easy target for thieves. But now expensive bikes kept under

:24:15. > :24:23.lock and key are also becoming a target.

:24:23. > :24:29.Cycling's popularity has soared in recent years. But for Harry, from

:24:29. > :24:35.Hazel Grove near Stockport, it has been a lifelong obsession.

:24:36. > :24:42.I have been cycling since I was 12, over 40 years.

:24:42. > :24:46.Cycling is my life. His hobby has taken him thousands of miles. This

:24:46. > :24:51.was a trip to Scotland. And when he retired from work, how we really

:24:51. > :24:56.began to enjoy his hobby. I used to work in a biscuit factory

:24:56. > :25:01.as a manager. I took early retirement when I was 55 and the

:25:01. > :25:07.lump sum that I got from my pension, I used that money to indulge my

:25:07. > :25:11.passion of cycling. Knowing how desirable his top of the

:25:11. > :25:18.range bikes were, he made sure they were kept secure and that securely

:25:18. > :25:22.locked up. But in March this year, that security was put to the test.

:25:22. > :25:29.I had bought an outbuilding to store them in, I tried to make that a

:25:29. > :25:34.secure as possible. I secured the doors with clasps that people could

:25:34. > :25:40.not cut through with hacksaws. The thieves could not wake him

:25:40. > :25:44.through the reinforced walls or the securely locked door. But that was

:25:44. > :25:47.not going to stop them. They found a weakness and they smashed through

:25:47. > :25:52.the roof, former pro-bikes were stolen.

:25:52. > :25:57.When I got out of bed that morning, I came downstairs and I looked into

:25:57. > :26:03.the garden and I saw the debris from the break-in, and I went cold.

:26:03. > :26:08.I was just devastated. Around 18,000 worth of top-quality and

:26:08. > :26:14.much loved cycles had been taken, including this red frame.

:26:14. > :26:19.My wife bought it for me for my 60th birthday, it was handmade. It was

:26:19. > :26:25.probably the only one in the country, if not the world, because

:26:25. > :26:30.it was designed to the way I had asked it to be done. I was very

:26:30. > :26:39.upset. Very angry with them. I just thought it was wrong that these

:26:39. > :26:48.people could come and take what I had worked hard for all my life.

:26:48. > :26:52.We are going to get some tips on bike Security in a minute. First of

:26:52. > :26:58.all, Harry's case, was he specifically targeted.

:26:58. > :27:06.It would appear that he was. They targeted his bikes, which were

:27:06. > :27:09.high-end and very expensive, about 20,000 worth of cycles.

:27:10. > :27:14.Particularly the pedal cycle, it was individually built for Harry.

:27:14. > :27:19.A lot of people here, you may have a bike here and want to know what to

:27:19. > :27:24.do. Talk about marking up the bike first.

:27:24. > :27:30.With most bikes, it you will find that they have a serial reference

:27:30. > :27:35.number and you have only got to turn the bike upside down to find that.

:27:35. > :27:43.Take details of that number. If your bike is stolen and we can

:27:43. > :27:48.cross-reference that. We also have a postcode on the base. That is marked

:27:48. > :27:51.on and will be removed -- cannot be removed, and we can recover it with

:27:51. > :27:57.that. We also have stickers that have your

:27:57. > :28:01.house address and postcode which we can place anywhere on your right. We

:28:01. > :28:06.recommend you put your postcode on the bike.

:28:06. > :28:12.In at least two places. Let's take a look at a bike theft that took place

:28:12. > :28:17.here recently. This guy appears particularly

:28:17. > :28:22.interested in a bike. The problem is, it is not his bike. But with the

:28:22. > :28:26.help of old cutters, he has decided to take it anyway. He does not know

:28:26. > :28:33.he has been spotted by police and they are giving chase. Jason was

:28:33. > :28:37.caught red-handed and he was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison.

:28:37. > :28:43.And that was unbelievably quick. We spoke about marking up the bikes,

:28:43. > :28:48.what about locks? Most of us have them, but have we got the right

:28:48. > :28:55.ones? There are varying degrees of locks.

:28:55. > :29:01.The cable locks or not the most secure, we would certainly advocate

:29:01. > :29:08.removing the front wheel, because sometimes the wheel can be removed,

:29:08. > :29:13.and clamping the Amur onto the wheel. You would need an angle

:29:13. > :29:18.grinder to remove that. -- the D-lock. If somebody had

:29:18. > :29:23.this, how safe is this? Not very safe, a thief with bolt

:29:23. > :29:27.cutters can come along and, as you can see. Straight through, not great

:29:27. > :29:37.to see. I hope you are picking up tips for

:29:37. > :29:40.

:29:40. > :29:46.know you like a barbecue and many of us like to enjoy our gardens during

:29:46. > :29:54.the more warmer months. Many of us can forget to secure windows and

:29:54. > :29:57.doors. Once thief we caught last year took full advantage. This CCTV

:29:57. > :30:01.shows the thief walking up the driveway of a family home in

:30:01. > :30:06.Nottinghamshire. He doesn't go straight into the house. He checks

:30:06. > :30:11.the coast is clear. Then, as the front door is not locked, he just

:30:12. > :30:16.lets himself in. After a few minutes inside the house, he comes out

:30:17. > :30:20.having stolen a watch and some jewellery. He had almost made his

:30:20. > :30:25.mistake when he was spotted by a decorator who was working in the

:30:25. > :30:29.house. But when questioned, the burglar brazenly walked off. He

:30:29. > :30:35.might have thought he had got away with it, until we ran the CCTV on

:30:35. > :30:41.Crimewatch Roadshow. It was just so cheeky. What happened after the

:30:41. > :30:47.show? We received ten calls all suggesting names. Simon Carter

:30:47. > :30:51.eliminated all but nine of them. The final lead to a man called Darren

:30:51. > :30:55.Coomber, who fitted the description perfectly and was a prolific

:30:55. > :31:02.criminal. He actually had a distinctive six inch scar across his

:31:02. > :31:06.face. They identified their suspect, what happened then? As luck

:31:06. > :31:10.would have it, he was already in prison for a similar offence. As

:31:10. > :31:16.Simon turned up to interview him, he said, I knew you were coming. He had

:31:16. > :31:22.actually been watching Crimewatch Roadshow himself and seen the CCTV.

:31:22. > :31:28.Presumably he admitted the offence? Yes, plus another burglary, which

:31:28. > :31:32.was discovered after he discarded a handbag. This guy is all over the

:31:32. > :31:37.place. He pleaded guilty to that and was given another four and a half

:31:37. > :31:42.years on top of his current sentence. A really strong result.

:31:42. > :31:49.The victim of that crime was very happy as well. A very distinctive

:31:50. > :31:54.character. It was within a matter of weeks that we had an identification.

:31:54. > :31:57.And got to court. There was some satisfaction, not complete closure

:31:58. > :32:04.because you can't replace the items, they were extremely sentimental and

:32:04. > :32:10.nobody can replace that. However, putting that person behind bars for

:32:10. > :32:13.taking two items of jewellery, it is a decent sentence. I think without

:32:13. > :32:18.the programme and getting it shown on Crimewatch Roadshow, I don't

:32:18. > :32:24.include would have got a result. Some degree of closure there. You

:32:24. > :32:31.have got another one? We always get good success with our faces and one

:32:31. > :32:35.in particular, Darren Cowland, also known as Darren Tear. He realised

:32:35. > :32:41.the game was up because he gave himself into a police patrol car.

:32:41. > :32:47.Which is brilliant. He pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with

:32:47. > :32:52.intent and a sexual assault and was actually given 14 years in prison.

:32:52. > :32:57.really good result there for someone who clearly needs to be off the

:32:57. > :33:07.streets. You are back next week with more, look forward to that. What is

:33:07. > :33:08.

:33:08. > :33:13.shone up to in Manchester? -- Sian. Manchester is a mecca for shoppers

:33:13. > :33:18.but unfortunately, along with the profits, there is crime. Shoplifting

:33:18. > :33:21.is a big problem. Across the force area, about 1000 cases of

:33:21. > :33:25.shoplifting are reported every month. Police are cracking down on

:33:25. > :33:30.it with the retailers and PC Jo Shaw is with me. What is happening in

:33:30. > :33:37.this shop on our right? We have just had information of a suspicious

:33:37. > :33:42.mail, he is white, wearing a stripey jumper, he has just entered the shoe

:33:42. > :33:47.shop as we speak. He is browsing. People are going to be on alert

:33:47. > :33:52.because of this message. I am just going to see if we have a patrol

:33:52. > :34:00.that can come down. Is there a patrol near St Ann's Square that can

:34:00. > :34:04.come down for a suspicious mail? Is there a patrol, please? You are

:34:04. > :34:09.calling out, and you would be getting messages through if there

:34:09. > :34:16.was an officer in this area who would be coming down to patrol and

:34:16. > :34:19.have a look on to see what is happening? This person is coming out

:34:19. > :34:25.of the shop and he is followed by the security guard. There is an

:34:25. > :34:30.officer coming up and we can see the action unfold in front of our eyes.

:34:30. > :34:35.Is this what could happen? This happens quite frequently, security

:34:35. > :34:40.guards monitor and observe and use a radio so we get quite a lot of

:34:40. > :34:44.people detained. This was not a real case, it is a member of our team

:34:45. > :34:51.that is helping out so that we can show however body is connected up in

:34:51. > :34:56.the city centre. You are all trying to tackle the problem together and

:34:56. > :35:01.there are some exclusions that the police are not exactly themselves

:35:01. > :35:04.excluding people, but that is happening. It usually happens when

:35:04. > :35:08.somebody has shoplifted on three occasions in the city centre. If

:35:08. > :35:15.they display any violence or threats on the first time, they would get

:35:15. > :35:20.excluded. But not by this police, a separate company. Thank you, people

:35:20. > :35:25.like to come here to do their shopping, I certainly do. We have

:35:26. > :35:29.seen Manchester by day, let's check it out why night. It is early

:35:29. > :35:33.evening in Manchester. Finally, the shoppers are heading home and the

:35:33. > :35:37.city begins to prepare for a different crowd. But as the

:35:37. > :35:45.revellers get ready for a night on the tiles, the police are already on

:35:45. > :35:49.the streets. Sergeants are patrolling the busy Piccadilly

:35:49. > :35:57.Gardens area on the part of two miles that make up the busy city

:35:57. > :36:07.centre. People are coming home from work, popping into the city, one or

:36:07. > :36:10.two people might be eating and then getting ready for a night out.

:36:10. > :36:13.are not expecting trouble yet but a few minutes later they are called to

:36:13. > :36:19.a building site. A man has been spotted 30 feet up scaffolding, it

:36:19. > :36:26.is thought he has been drinking. What are you doing? You have been

:36:26. > :36:34.drinking? A much have you had? man is lucky not to have fallen to

:36:34. > :36:44.his death. How far did you go? got halfway. Was it enough to kill

:36:44. > :36:48.

:36:48. > :36:54.yourself if you felt? The men decide to send him home. Unfortunately

:36:54. > :36:58.people get drunk, a bit of bravado and then they go beyond their means.

:36:58. > :37:04.Making sure all goes smoothly in the biggest city in the north-west on a

:37:04. > :37:14.Saturday night is a giant task. The 50 strong police team expect more

:37:14. > :37:21.

:37:21. > :37:24.than 100,000 people to come to party at over 600 of Manchester's venues.

:37:24. > :37:28.As night falls, DC Fernandez and special constable Hanssen head out

:37:28. > :37:33.to patrol the city's Gay Village, can our street. It is Saturday

:37:33. > :37:39.night, there is a lot of alcohol, people come out for a good time. The

:37:40. > :37:46.minorities caused the problems. Despite the party atmosphere,

:37:46. > :37:52.trouble kicks off. There is a disturbance outside a club. Just

:37:52. > :38:00.calm down. A man with electric bunny ears is causing trouble. It's a

:38:00. > :38:10.racist assault. Get off! I am not doing nothing. Get your white hands

:38:10. > :38:12.

:38:12. > :38:22.off me. You are under arrest for being drunk and disorderly. The man

:38:22. > :38:29.

:38:29. > :38:34.to the police station to sober up. This particular mail has probably

:38:34. > :38:44.had too many to drink so he has decided to cause a few issues

:38:44. > :38:53.

:38:53. > :39:00.well. They have a good working relationship and check licenses

:39:00. > :39:04.and/or staff to ensure everything is in order -- and door staff. It is

:39:04. > :39:11.the time of night when serious disturbances can kick off. These PCs

:39:11. > :39:17.are on duty. Myself and my colleague our response officers in Manchester

:39:17. > :39:21.city centre we are about to head out and see what we shift brings.

:39:21. > :39:25.is the time of night when clubs begin to close and some of the

:39:25. > :39:31.late-night crowd are at their most wrong. Reports of a street brawl

:39:31. > :39:36.take them across town. -- at their most drunk. The men claim they have

:39:36. > :39:42.been attacked by a larger group. To calm things down, the police try to

:39:42. > :39:52.move the men on quickly, but they don't cooperate. One man kicks off.

:40:18. > :40:26.police decide to arrest him for being drunk and disorderly but the

:40:26. > :40:31.men haven't finished yet. If I have to have a chat with you one more

:40:41. > :40:42.

:40:42. > :40:49.word with you one more time, start going. Leave the area. The PC often

:40:49. > :40:53.sees cases like this. It is the alcohol problem. These people are

:40:53. > :40:58.probably very nice people when they are sober but they consume too much

:40:58. > :41:03.alcohol and get involved in trouble like this, it is unnecessary.

:41:03. > :41:08.at police HQ, the man is booked into custody. He later paid a fixed

:41:08. > :41:13.penalty of 80. And the reveller with the bunny ears, he pleaded

:41:14. > :41:20.guilty to a public order offence and was fine. As the sun comes up, the

:41:20. > :41:24.team head back out for one last patrol -- and was fined. At the end

:41:24. > :41:29.of the ship, we have come to do a bit of high visibility patrolling

:41:29. > :41:36.around the Canal Street area of Manchester. It has quietened down,

:41:36. > :41:40.it looks like everyone has started to go home which is good news.
