:00:17. > :00:27.Today on Crimewatch Roadshow: Help us find the heartless burglars who

:00:27. > :00:40.

:00:40. > :00:46.threatened a mother and her tiny Hello and welcome to Crimewatch

:00:46. > :00:50.Roadshow. We are live and it is our final week on air. We will be

:00:50. > :00:56.asking for your help to solve the crime is that affect us all on the

:00:57. > :01:03.programme today. Going for gold, a terrifying burglary that left a

:01:03. > :01:10.mother fearing for her baby boy's life. The thieves targeting the

:01:10. > :01:17.marvellous Mini in a city that created the classic car. And pacing

:01:17. > :01:21.the pavements in Stourbridge. Cracking down on thefts from cars.

:01:21. > :01:26.Our Road Show team are still travelling the country. It is their

:01:26. > :01:31.final week on the road and they are in the West Midlands.

:01:31. > :01:37.I am in Victoria Square right in the heart of Birmingham and this is

:01:37. > :01:40.one of the City's most famous exports, the mini-car. The West

:01:41. > :01:47.Midlands Police are investigating a sharp rise in the theft of these

:01:47. > :01:51.classic cars. More about that later. Another thing Birmingham is famous

:01:51. > :01:57.for is its jewellery quarter. There are around 400 businesses there and

:01:57. > :02:01.most of them sell gold, the value of which has risen by 500% over the

:02:01. > :02:09.last six years. That is a fact which criminals are all too well

:02:09. > :02:12.aware of as well, as one Birmingham family found out to their cost.

:02:12. > :02:18.is just things that could have been passed down to my children which we

:02:18. > :02:28.do not have any more. I am very scared, I still have nightmares, I

:02:28. > :02:29.

:02:29. > :02:36.do not have the guts to be on my own in the house. Reshan was

:02:36. > :02:42.getting ready to go to work, leaving his wife Sadia and the baby.

:02:42. > :02:47.He used to wake up during the night time and I thought I would be

:02:47. > :02:51.sleeping for a more time, than going downstairs. They were asleep

:02:51. > :03:00.and I left the house at about quarter past seven, so it was a

:03:00. > :03:06.regular day. But there would be nothing regular about this day as

:03:06. > :03:09.Sadia slept with her baby son by her side. Three men broke in

:03:09. > :03:17.downstairs and they knew exactly what they were looking for,

:03:17. > :03:24.precious gold jewellery. They were all a young age, no more than 18 or

:03:24. > :03:30.19. They were very skinny, three of them, but the black guy was a big

:03:30. > :03:35.build and he said, where is the gold? I gave everything I had in my

:03:35. > :03:41.room at first, Mike earrings, they were gold and diamonds. He said, it

:03:41. > :03:45.is not enough, give me more. majority of the jewellery was not

:03:45. > :03:49.kept in the bedroom when the offenders first confronted her.

:03:49. > :03:54.They told her they knew there was more and they wanted her to show

:03:54. > :03:59.them where it was. All Sadia could think about was her

:03:59. > :04:05.baby son. She wanted to protect him, but she had to do the unthinkable,

:04:05. > :04:13.handing over to one of the burglars. The black guy said, leave the baby

:04:13. > :04:17.with me. This robbery is made more serious buyer that there was a

:04:17. > :04:21.young child that was present and either threatened, or a threat was

:04:21. > :04:25.implied against them. Sadia was torn between her baby

:04:25. > :04:29.screaming for comfort and the robbers screaming for God. She had

:04:29. > :04:33.no choice but to leave her son behind and give the robbers what

:04:33. > :04:40.they wanted. I wanted them to get out of the house as soon as they

:04:40. > :04:46.could. For that I could pay any price. If I had more things with me,

:04:46. > :04:52.I would have given them everything. I do not mind as long as me and my

:04:52. > :04:55.baby were safe. I told them, do not touch my baby. They ransacked three

:04:55. > :05:02.rooms and they refused to give the baby back to vet until they were

:05:02. > :05:06.sure they had every last piece of pressures, gold jewellery. I did

:05:06. > :05:15.not have anything else. I have given you everything, so go from

:05:15. > :05:23.here now. They took everything from the room and other rooms as well.

:05:23. > :05:28.And then they went. With her baby boy back in her arms and sure that

:05:28. > :05:33.the burglars had left the house, Sadia rang the police. They got

:05:33. > :05:39.away with a considerable amount, a lot of Asian gold and wedding

:05:39. > :05:45.jewellery and other valuable items. In total we believe it was around

:05:45. > :05:48.40,000 worth. It was passed down through my grandfather and my

:05:48. > :05:54.grandmother to my father and then passed down to my mum and then

:05:54. > :06:00.passed down to us. Some of it was bought a long time ago, and it is

:06:00. > :06:10.irreplaceable. The robbery has left Sadia terrified of being left by

:06:10. > :06:13.

:06:13. > :06:19.herself. I took a week off work so I could spend time with my son and

:06:19. > :06:26.my wife. I still have nightmares, I do not have the guts to be alone in

:06:26. > :06:32.my house. I am joined by DC Damian Forrest who is investigating this

:06:32. > :06:35.case. It was a really nasty burglary. It was. Having three

:06:35. > :06:41.people burst into your home it would be scary enough, but she was

:06:41. > :06:44.there with a four-month-old trialled, dozing on her bed. The

:06:44. > :06:49.defenders made Sadia and the child over to them at whilst they went

:06:49. > :06:55.around the house looking for gold to steal. We have got some

:06:55. > :07:00.descriptions. We are looking for a three males. A white male who was

:07:00. > :07:06.18-19 years old, skinny build, wearing a black and grey bandana

:07:06. > :07:10.and dark clothing. An Asian male who was the same age, a slightly

:07:10. > :07:15.bigger build and he was dressed in similar clothing, but with lighter

:07:15. > :07:20.trousers. The third male, a black male, it was carrying a metal bar

:07:20. > :07:24.or crowbar type implement. He was slightly more muscular, again

:07:24. > :07:30.dressed in a bandana and dark clothing. A tell us about the

:07:30. > :07:36.jewellery. It is very distinctive. It is a number of items including

:07:36. > :07:41.an Asian gold wedding set which is worth about 40,000 in total. A lot

:07:41. > :07:48.of it was made bespoke and brought over from Pakistan. Some of the

:07:48. > :07:52.items have been in the family for generations. One ring was engraved

:07:52. > :07:57.with the grandfather's name and also Sadia was engraved on a

:07:57. > :08:02.necklace. It was irreplaceable for them and such sentimental value.

:08:02. > :08:08.What is likely to have happened with it? With items like this we

:08:08. > :08:14.recover a small amount, but the majority are melted down as they

:08:14. > :08:18.are so valuable as a base metal. are not far from the jewellery

:08:18. > :08:24.quarter and Terry Stevenson from Lois Jewellery has come along and

:08:24. > :08:31.she has brought an amazing array of gold. It looks absolutely beautiful.

:08:31. > :08:40.This is what we are talking about. This is a typical wedding jewellery

:08:40. > :08:43.set. It would retail at about 5,000. They would scrap that

:08:43. > :08:50.40,500 because these families cannot insure these pieces because

:08:50. > :08:56.it cost so much money. You could not actually wear it every day.

:08:56. > :09:02.They are so worried that the items are going to get stolen. We have

:09:02. > :09:06.got security here with us today, this is worth an awful lot of money.

:09:06. > :09:10.We have got the jewellery which is stunning and we have also got the

:09:10. > :09:19.gold bars because this is what the gold is melted down to. This is

:09:19. > :09:23.what it looks like. This is worth 65,000. That is worth 40,000 plus.

:09:23. > :09:28.We are talking about a lot of money. When you said that families bring

:09:28. > :09:33.their jewellery end that is because they are so scared about it being

:09:33. > :09:37.stolen. It must be an anguished to make that decision. Obviously it

:09:37. > :09:42.has been in the family for so many years and at the end of the day it

:09:42. > :09:50.is heartbreaking to get it melted down. This is a very high carat

:09:50. > :09:56.gold, isn't it? That is 22 carat, which is high value, but these are

:09:56. > :10:03.fine gold, they are even higher at 24 carat. There are other pieces of

:10:03. > :10:10.the jewellery. These would be about 2,500 alone. You do not need much

:10:10. > :10:16.to make it into a high value items. When you say people bring gold to

:10:16. > :10:21.you shot how do you make sure it is not stolen? We ask them to fill out

:10:21. > :10:27.a form, get identification, driving licence, passport, so we do our

:10:27. > :10:31.best to check these people out. Thank you for bringing this along

:10:31. > :10:35.and also thank you both of you as well for looking after the gold and

:10:35. > :10:40.asked this morning. I can assure you this is all going back into the

:10:40. > :10:46.safe. It is time to take a look at the

:10:46. > :10:50.most candid cameras of all. Here are our first lot of crooks caught

:10:50. > :10:55.on CCTV. A house in Burnley. It is an

:10:55. > :10:58.evening in May. This uninvited guest is looking for awake in.

:10:59. > :11:04.Watch how he squirms his way through the open window and sees a

:11:04. > :11:09.key in the door and leaned over to unlock it. Once he is in, he takes

:11:09. > :11:16.his time wiping his prints off the door handle and such is the house.

:11:16. > :11:19.He finds a handbag which he hides in his clothes. The contents were

:11:19. > :11:29.worth 130. He leaves and takes the key with him, locking the door on

:11:29. > :11:30.

:11:30. > :11:35.the way out. Do you know this burglar? A night bus in Croydon. A

:11:35. > :11:40.man is being violently assaulted. His attacker had asked him for his

:11:40. > :11:45.telephone, but when he refused to hand it over, he started laying

:11:45. > :11:55.into him. The victim up thought the man off, but it was a terrifying

:11:55. > :12:00.ordeal. Can you recognise this man? Give us a call. Dagenham and an

:12:00. > :12:05.elderly man is using a cash machine. Watch as the man in the cap loiters

:12:05. > :12:12.behind him. He is clocking his PIN number. He covers the machine with

:12:12. > :12:18.a piece of paper, rejects the card and takes it. The thief uses the

:12:18. > :12:28.card in the cash machine right next to his victim. He withdraws 300

:12:28. > :12:33.and makes his escape. Do you recognise the Seamus scoundrel --

:12:33. > :12:43.Seamus scoundrel? If you recognise them, you can call

:12:43. > :12:50.

:12:50. > :12:55.us. The space is important in the text message. You can send us an e-

:12:55. > :12:59.mail as well. Being a bobby on the beat is not

:12:59. > :13:07.without its challenges, but being armed with the latest technology

:13:07. > :13:17.can make a difference. Colin price from South Wales Police is

:13:17. > :13:25.Pontypridd's one-man CCTV. How did you get that title? From all of my

:13:25. > :13:31.gadgets. Tell us about this, this is not an ordinary mobile telephone.

:13:31. > :13:38.It is a CCTV monitor. I can get live images but any camera in my

:13:38. > :13:43.area where I work whilst I am anywhere on duty. You could be out

:13:43. > :13:50.on the beat and your control room could send the images from the CCTV

:13:51. > :13:56.director your telephone? Yes.We can see it in action right now.

:13:56. > :14:03.have had this for about two years and it is superb. This is my mobile

:14:03. > :14:09.camera. If I want to record anything, I can snap it down and be

:14:09. > :14:14.caught anybody. These radio is a direct link to that CCTV control

:14:14. > :14:23.room. Where I am standing now I have got three cameras that I could

:14:23. > :14:33.call on at any time. If I stop and search somebody, my back is covered

:14:33. > :14:45.

:14:45. > :14:53.things by my colleagues at work. Robocop, the Sheriff, you name it. I

:14:53. > :15:03.do not mind what I am called, it makes my job easier. That is

:15:03. > :15:12.

:15:12. > :15:16.perfect. One of the things we saw was the body camera. It is a small

:15:16. > :15:19.one we can see on the screen. a really clear image that we can see

:15:19. > :15:21.of me. Just tell me, from work point of view, how can this be handy for

:15:21. > :15:31.you? You are talking from low-level shoplifters, it gathers the

:15:31. > :15:34.

:15:34. > :15:36.evidence. Public order is a great one. Saturday night, people have

:15:36. > :15:39.been drinking too much, there is a scuffle, it is all captured on

:15:39. > :15:41.camera. It says smile, you are on CCTV. They know they are being

:15:41. > :15:46.filmed. I tell them that. And your protection of someone wanted to take

:15:46. > :15:49.a swing at you, great protection for the officers. The other big one is

:15:49. > :15:55.domestic violence. If I go to a domestic violence call and the

:15:55. > :16:01.victim is there, this will record the injuries. Should they want to

:16:01. > :16:04.withdraw a statement, we can go on a victim list prosecution for the CPS.

:16:04. > :16:14.The camera never lies. There is another piece of kit I am intrigued

:16:14. > :16:24.

:16:24. > :16:27.about. What is this? Metal Mickey is a portable camera. If we get an area

:16:27. > :16:29.where there is a high crime area or anti-social behaviour, which plays a

:16:30. > :16:33.lot of people's minds, if it is high-level stuff, I can have a

:16:33. > :16:36.meeting with the local authority. We will put up a sign saying the area

:16:36. > :16:43.is being monitored. The unique thing about Mickey is I can control him

:16:43. > :16:53.from my phone. I have control of these cameras. You can have one of

:16:53. > :16:56.these put in, very simply and the images these record goes direct to

:16:56. > :16:58.your phone wherever you are. Thank you very much for coming in. I

:16:58. > :17:01.love that stuff. For now, let's go back to Sian who has an urgent

:17:01. > :17:10.appeal in Birmingham. Yes, we need your help to find the

:17:10. > :17:12.men who raided a shop south-west of here in Quinton. It was a really

:17:12. > :17:15.scary attack. Let's take a look at what happened.

:17:15. > :17:24.It is Saturday night at a convenience store and two men into

:17:25. > :17:28.the shop. One of them brandishes a large kitchen knife. The man

:17:28. > :17:38.threatens the shop worker and demands that she opens the till. The

:17:38. > :17:41.

:17:41. > :17:44.terrified woman has no choice. The two men then start helping

:17:44. > :17:47.themselves to the night's takings. The hooded male hands are bad to the

:17:47. > :17:54.shop assistant and tells her to fill it with cigarettes. At this point,

:17:54. > :17:56.an elderly man enters the shop. Although the robbers tell him to get

:17:56. > :18:02.out, he bravely stands his ground. The men decide enough is enough and

:18:02. > :18:04.make their getaway. Desperate for a smoke, they make one last attempt to

:18:04. > :18:11.grab the cigarettes. The shop assistant stands her ground and

:18:11. > :18:19.refuses. These brazen thieves got away with 600 in notes and about

:18:19. > :18:21.200 in coins. I am joined by DC Phil Langstone who

:18:21. > :18:31.is investigating this case. Really frightening for the shop worker.

:18:31. > :18:40.

:18:40. > :18:43.Yes, she was working alone in the store. She had a gentleman rush at

:18:43. > :18:46.her with a knife. She was forced behind the counter and she was then

:18:46. > :18:49.aware that there were two offenders. She was ordered to do what they say

:18:49. > :18:53.otherwise she would get hurt. She was given a bag she was told to fill

:18:53. > :18:55.with cigarettes while they emptied the contents of the till. You have

:18:55. > :18:58.got descriptions of the men? Yes, the main offender who had a large

:18:58. > :19:08.kitchen knife is described as white, approximately five foot five, late

:19:08. > :19:11.

:19:11. > :19:14.30s and heavy build. The second offender was described as being in

:19:14. > :19:17.his mid-20s, five foot seven, slim build. He was wearing all dark

:19:17. > :19:20.clothing with his face covered with a baseball cap. She was very brave,

:19:20. > :19:24.wasn't she? She did turn around and refused to give them cigarettes and

:19:24. > :19:32.told them they are on camera at which point they ran. Amazing. Act

:19:32. > :19:34.to you. Now time to look at today's Wanted

:19:34. > :19:44.Faces. This man, Przemyslaw Jan Rustelnick, is first today. Police

:19:44. > :19:46.

:19:46. > :19:49.want to question him about a number of burglaries in West London. He is

:19:49. > :19:57.originally from Romania. He has a patio of an eye on the back of his

:19:57. > :20:07.neck. Next up is this man. He imprisoned a woman in her own home

:20:07. > :20:10.

:20:10. > :20:14.and she had cash stolen. He has a cat two of the word speedy on his

:20:14. > :20:18.left arm and one of a panther and two names on his right arm. He has

:20:18. > :20:28.links to south Wales and Manchester. A warrant was issued for Maxie

:20:28. > :20:45.

:20:45. > :20:47.Donald Gunanantham's arrest. He was accused of obtaining a loan in

:20:47. > :20:49.someone else's name. He was born in Sri Lanka but has connections to

:20:49. > :20:52.Accrington and London. And finally we have 27-year-old Shenaz Naeem.

:20:52. > :20:54.She is wanted for questioning by police in greater Manchester. She is

:20:54. > :21:01.part of a gang of thieves travelling across the UK distracting people at

:21:01. > :21:04.cashpoints. She is known to have links to East London and the West

:21:04. > :21:14.Midlands. Where is she now? If you know the whereabouts of any of these

:21:14. > :21:18.

:21:18. > :21:20.people you can call us or text us or send us an e-mail. Still to come:

:21:20. > :21:30.how police in Stourbridge are cracking down on careless car

:21:30. > :21:32.

:21:32. > :21:34.owners. The Mini is an iconic reddish

:21:34. > :21:39.design, born and bred here in the West Midlands. Their popularity has

:21:39. > :21:44.not faded since the 60s. It is not just collectors who love them -- an

:21:44. > :21:53.iconic British design. Thefts of them have soared to epidemic

:21:53. > :21:59.proportions. I love Minis, my family love Minis. My grandchildren want

:21:59. > :22:09.them. We are all Mini mad. I passed my test, saw this car and thought I

:22:09. > :22:09.

:22:09. > :22:14.am buying it. The Mini is the West Midlands. The first Minis rolled out

:22:14. > :22:20.of burning in 1959 and started a small revolution across the world.

:22:20. > :22:22.But for their owners, the Mini is more than just a car. When Sue

:22:22. > :22:32.Belcher ought her special 30th anniversary Mini it was love at

:22:32. > :22:34.

:22:34. > :22:36.first sight. A lovely black Mini 30 with lots of chrome. Inside was

:22:36. > :22:46.chrome and walnut. It was a beautiful car. Soon she bought it 11

:22:46. > :22:47.

:22:48. > :22:50.years ago, Sue has sent thousands on her car. These are the wheels I

:22:51. > :22:57.bought. But she never had a chance to put the wheels on her much loved

:22:57. > :23:02.car. One evening in April she was at home when her beloved car was stolen

:23:02. > :23:12.from right under her nose. I wanted to clear up so I started mopping the

:23:12. > :23:18.

:23:18. > :23:20.floor. I thought I saw the lights come on and go wash very fast. I

:23:20. > :23:23.thought I was imagining it. I carried on mopping. I looked again

:23:23. > :23:25.and it was slowly rolling off the drive. I thought I had left my

:23:25. > :23:33.handbrake off. The thief had not started the engine so sue did not

:23:33. > :23:43.realise her car had been stolen. ran out thinking it would cause an

:23:43. > :23:44.

:23:44. > :23:47.accident. There was a big fellow sitting in the car. Sue gave chase

:23:47. > :23:49.but by now it was moving too fast for Sue to catch it. My heart was

:23:49. > :23:55.pounding. It was a horrible thought. I could not believe somebody was

:23:55. > :24:05.stealing my car. I never thought it would happen. I am still hoping I

:24:05. > :24:11.

:24:11. > :24:14.will get it back. Motorway cop Alan Colman is also a

:24:15. > :24:17.Mini enthusiasts. He has made it his mission to investigate and has

:24:17. > :24:24.discovered there has been a recent surge in the theft of these classic

:24:24. > :24:27.cars. Since September I have noticed 35 Minis have been stolen in the

:24:27. > :24:32.West Midlands Police area alone. That accounts for half of the Minis

:24:32. > :24:40.stolen nationally. These little cars are worth a lot more than people

:24:40. > :24:45.think. Recently they have been selling for a lot of money. One sold

:24:45. > :24:54.for 40,000 at an auction. A Monte Carlo Mini can be worth anything up

:24:54. > :24:58.to 100,000. Many Mini owners like John MacAllister are happy to spend

:24:58. > :25:05.a fortune restoring their vintage cars. I dread to think how much I

:25:05. > :25:11.have spent on it. I work solidly for a year and a half to buy a Mini in

:25:11. > :25:18.the first place. On the 4th of April, while John was at work in a

:25:18. > :25:24.retail park he thought -- he caught a would-be thief in the act and

:25:24. > :25:29.chased after him. It was pretty brazen. It was a sunny day.

:25:29. > :25:33.Rush-hour traffic, a lot of people are all about. A mate of mine said,

:25:33. > :25:40.there is someone looking at your car. The unwanted admirer was not

:25:40. > :25:50.just looking at John's car, was in it. It was not until I got to the

:25:50. > :25:55.entrance that I saw the door was open on and I saw a guy pop his head

:25:55. > :25:58.up. I took off like a rocket and flu after him. He made his way through

:25:58. > :26:00.the bushes and jumped over the perimeter fence. He got into a car

:26:00. > :26:07.waiting for him on the main road. The interesting thing about John's

:26:07. > :26:14.case is John witnessed them trying to steal his Mini. He gave me a lead

:26:14. > :26:21.that they got into a dark coloured Renault Megane Scenic and he gave me

:26:21. > :26:23.a registration number that he thought was correct. The getaway car

:26:23. > :26:30.turned out to have false number plates but it has still given the

:26:30. > :26:32.police a vital clue. I did a bit more digging and I found that this

:26:32. > :26:41.vehicle had been in company with another Mini which was stolen two

:26:41. > :26:44.weeks later and we have now linked that vehicle to two War three other

:26:44. > :26:47.thefts of Minis. That is an avenue of investigation I am looking at at

:26:47. > :26:52.the minute to identify who owns that vehicle. I am convinced it is an

:26:52. > :27:02.organised group of criminals. A lot of these vehicles go missing. It is

:27:02. > :27:05.

:27:05. > :27:08.destroying people's lives. I knew it could not be replaced. I cannot

:27:08. > :27:16.believe it has been taken. I cannot believe anyone would do it. I am

:27:16. > :27:19.still gutted. I am as gutted today as when it was first taken.

:27:19. > :27:22.I am with PC Alan Colman who we saw in that film. It is very upsetting

:27:22. > :27:27.for the owners of Minis. What information do we have? We are still

:27:27. > :27:32.interested in the red Renault Megane Scenic. Anyone who has had their

:27:32. > :27:42.cars stolen, if they think they saw that car around the time, it might

:27:42. > :27:43.

:27:43. > :27:46.have been two weeks before, all the time of the theft, they need to

:27:46. > :27:49.contact us. We know that vehicle has been sold on to another person but

:27:49. > :27:53.we are still interested in it. do you think is happening to the

:27:53. > :27:56.Minis? I'd am pretty certain the vehicles have not been sold on the

:27:56. > :28:02.open market. The classic Mini immunity is very close. They would

:28:02. > :28:06.let me know if that vehicle has been stripped or partner come for sale. I

:28:06. > :28:10.think they are being stored in storage yards or containers and

:28:10. > :28:16.waiting to be moved on. Have you ever come across anything like this

:28:16. > :28:26.a few years ago -- before? A few years ago the nanograms community

:28:26. > :28:38.

:28:38. > :28:41.suffered the same fate -- M G. We found those vehicles packed up.

:28:41. > :28:43.are a minivan. We have got something to show you. This is an original

:28:43. > :28:46.police Mini car. Really cute. She would have been policing the

:28:46. > :28:54.streets. This particular car policed the streets of Liverpool. They used

:28:54. > :29:01.them from around 1957. How do they manage? Word the office is six feet

:29:01. > :29:04.tall? In Birmingham the officers had to be over six foot. There are lots

:29:04. > :29:10.of hilarious stories about them trying to get in and out. I have

:29:10. > :29:20.been wanting to have a look inside. The door handle is pretty stiff but

:29:20. > :29:20.

:29:20. > :29:23.when you go inside it is tiny in here. Just take a look at this. No

:29:23. > :29:25.mobile phones in those days. This was the radio device so that is how

:29:25. > :29:30.they would be getting their communications in those days.

:29:31. > :29:40.Fascinating to see. How useful was it? It was used as a traffic car in

:29:41. > :29:41.

:29:41. > :29:44.and around the city centre. It was fantastic. However fast you are

:29:44. > :29:54.going, it would go round the bend is. Let's take a look at it and how

:29:54. > :29:57.

:29:57. > :30:02.it would leave. Not too fast, I Later on we will be telling you how

:30:03. > :30:07.you can best secure your car. A it is bad news when a thief is

:30:07. > :30:11.scruffy enough to steal your car, but when drivers forget to lock

:30:12. > :30:16.their car in the first place it is easy pickings for crooks.

:30:16. > :30:20.There is an neighbourhood in Stourbridge near Birmingham where

:30:20. > :30:24.the residents seem to trust one another and off Allott. It might be

:30:25. > :30:31.that everyone here just has a very nice neighbours, because lots of

:30:31. > :30:36.them do not seem too bothered about locking up their cars. We take it

:30:36. > :30:39.as a positive that people feel comfortable and that they can leave

:30:39. > :30:46.their cars unlocked because they do not think they will be victims of

:30:46. > :30:50.crime. But when there was a sharp rise in crime in the area the

:30:50. > :30:58.police went to find out what was going on. We were really surprised

:30:58. > :31:05.by the amount of vehicles that were left unlocked. Two days later we

:31:05. > :31:09.found 80. Within two days we had potentially 140 victims of crime.

:31:09. > :31:15.Now the team are on a mission to get the locals to lock up their

:31:15. > :31:21.cars. We are physically checking the vehicles to make sure they are

:31:21. > :31:27.open or locked. If you bear with us, we welcome to you. The team have

:31:27. > :31:33.already found a vehicle straight away. It is a van with the door

:31:33. > :31:40.open and a load of tools out on display. We found your vehicle on

:31:40. > :31:50.the street and it was not secure. The door was unlocked. The doors

:31:50. > :31:51.

:31:51. > :31:58.were all open. Can you come out and rectify the situation? I usually

:31:58. > :32:03.Lockett because there are tours in it. I left it open and went into

:32:03. > :32:08.the house and made an appointment with the dentist and that was it.

:32:08. > :32:18.Soon that the police found another unlocked door of. All the doors are

:32:18. > :32:18.

:32:18. > :32:24.open. We have just checked it and it is not locked. I know.Do you

:32:24. > :32:27.often leave it open? You need to address that. We are trying to

:32:27. > :32:35.identify all the vehicles that are not secure and let the owners know

:32:35. > :32:40.so that they know. I appreciate that. Please take it in the spirit

:32:40. > :32:46.in which it is intended. We have been out for about 20 minutes and

:32:46. > :32:53.have got about five or six already. I suppose everybody is looking out

:32:53. > :33:01.for everybody. Just is tempting I that valuables left out on display.

:33:01. > :33:06.There is a bag on the back seat. There is also clearly someone's

:33:06. > :33:15.identity badge on the front. Would you mind coming to the vehicle and

:33:15. > :33:20.removing it? I will do that. Fantastic. And the badge on the

:33:21. > :33:25.front seat. A fantastic. It would be better to bring it into the

:33:25. > :33:35.house. Absolutely, because you never know what people's intentions

:33:35. > :33:36.

:33:36. > :33:41.will be. And just when you thought it could not get any worse.

:33:41. > :33:47.need to be aware of leaving valuables like that. You need to

:33:47. > :33:53.secure your vehicle. OK. I think my little boy was with me and I was

:33:53. > :33:59.distracted by the children and I left my credit cards -- credit

:33:59. > :34:05.cards as well. It was appalling. has been a busy night with 21 cars

:34:05. > :34:11.found unsecured in less than three hours. But they are not going to

:34:11. > :34:15.get up on the neighbourhood. will never stop with this kind of

:34:15. > :34:19.tactic. Offenders will always be out there and we will do our very

:34:19. > :34:26.best to make sure we reduce the offenders and reduce the number of

:34:26. > :34:30.vehicles they can actually break into. Leaving your car unlocked is

:34:30. > :34:35.undoubtedly an open invitation for thieves, but nowadays the modern

:34:35. > :34:42.cars are fitted with all sorts of security devices which make the job

:34:42. > :34:48.pretty difficult. But what about the classic Mini? In the 1950s the

:34:48. > :34:55.safety devices and security were pretty crude. Reshan is a many

:34:55. > :35:00.lover, but he is going to show us how easily and quickly it can be

:35:00. > :35:07.done to get into a car like this. I am going to time him. The stopwatch

:35:07. > :35:12.is on. Obviously we are not going to show you exactly how he did that,

:35:12. > :35:15.for obvious reasons, but it illustrates the point that people

:35:15. > :35:22.have to be very careful and think about how they can secure cars like

:35:22. > :35:32.this one will stop he is inside the vehicle now. We have got 23 seconds

:35:32. > :35:40.on the clock. I am not sure what he was doing. He has just started the

:35:40. > :35:45.car. Stop the clock and it is 34 seconds. Come on out. 34 seconds it

:35:45. > :35:51.took you to do that. What we want to talk about is securing cars like

:35:51. > :35:55.this. What can people do to protect them? The problem with the old Mini

:35:55. > :36:04.is that the locks and the barrel is really worn out, so replace them as

:36:04. > :36:09.soon as you can be. 22 and job done. What about these things? This

:36:09. > :36:15.is a selection of steering locks. This is one of the better ones. It

:36:15. > :36:20.is a visual deterrent as well as a good security one. That would put

:36:20. > :36:26.somebody off. Yes, the time it takes to get that off, it is not

:36:26. > :36:31.worth getting involved with. What about the smaller one? Again it is

:36:31. > :36:38.different, the same principle. It goes through the steering wheel.

:36:38. > :36:45.And the final item? It is a tracker. You can hide this anywhere in the

:36:45. > :36:51.vehicle. They start at about 150 and got up to 300. The annual

:36:51. > :36:56.subscription is about 100 a year. You are a many lover and Paul owns

:36:56. > :37:00.the police car that we just sort. I'm sure you are devastated by the

:37:00. > :37:09.theft. It is a bit concerning that you cannot leave the car anywhere

:37:09. > :37:13.now. You cannot do it anymore. it is time to cast your eye over

:37:14. > :37:21.our second batch of criminals caught on CCTV. Be warned, there is

:37:21. > :37:25.some nasty stuff happening. Hinckley train station in Leicester

:37:25. > :37:30.and a group have just got off this train, but something has upset one

:37:30. > :37:35.of the women. One man decides talking is not enough and shoves

:37:35. > :37:41.the guard backwards onto the train. There is a scuffle as his mates

:37:41. > :37:51.tried to drag him away. The guard has been left shaken by the

:37:51. > :37:52.

:37:52. > :37:57.incident. If you know anything, please get in touch. We are in

:37:57. > :38:02.Salisbury and the man in the brown coat walking towards us has already

:38:02. > :38:05.been assaulted by someone up an argument in a car park, but his

:38:05. > :38:09.attack it is still angry and confronts him again in the street.

:38:10. > :38:14.He pushes him to the floor. He suffered bruising and cuts to his

:38:15. > :38:22.face and was very shaken up. Can you help the police solve this

:38:22. > :38:28.crime? It is a cold, January evening, and there is trouble at a

:38:28. > :38:32.club in Basildon. This guy has been kicked out, but his night is not

:38:32. > :38:38.over. He greets a stranger and then suddenly punches sent in the face.

:38:38. > :38:43.He is knocked out cold. The man realises he has injured his victims

:38:43. > :38:50.seriously, but he runs off as his victim is being looked after by the

:38:50. > :38:59.bouncers. He suffered at lead on the brain. We need to catch this

:38:59. > :39:07.violent thug. Do you recognise this man? He suffered bleeding on his

:39:07. > :39:14.brain. You can call us or text us. The space in the text message is

:39:14. > :39:20.important. You can also e-mail us. And you can call this number

:39:20. > :39:28.anonymously. The lines are very busy, so please keep calling if you

:39:28. > :39:33.cannot get through. The roadshow is all about the nuts

:39:33. > :39:38.and bolts of everyday policing, but here on BBC One later this morning

:39:38. > :39:43.there is a programme that will tell you more about one particular group,

:39:43. > :39:48.the special constables, who give their time for free.

:39:48. > :39:52.The majority volunteer on Friday nights and weekends. This means

:39:52. > :39:58.patrolling high streets and town centres, on the front line of

:39:58. > :40:06.Britain's binge drinking culture. Tonight in the battle to reclaim

:40:06. > :40:12.the streets is 21 year-old special Sergeant Lewis Newton and his

:40:12. > :40:17.colleague, web developer, Adam. you are caught in the city centre,

:40:17. > :40:23.you will be arrested. Taking a stand against the lager louts is

:40:23. > :40:26.the reason he decided to become a volunteer. Binge drinking and anti-

:40:26. > :40:36.social behaviour, somebody needs to crack down on that and that is what

:40:36. > :40:38.

:40:38. > :40:42.I want to do and I will see that difference. Joining me now it is

:40:42. > :40:47.Sam had Linton who has been a special since March last year. What

:40:47. > :40:54.is your day job? I work at a nursing home as a care support

:40:54. > :40:57.worker. Does that help you?Yes, during the day I help people with

:40:57. > :41:02.learning disabilities and I get valuable experience which I can

:41:02. > :41:10.bring into this. You do not look old enough, do people tell you

:41:10. > :41:15.that? Yes, I get it all the time. I am only 21. What about the reaction

:41:15. > :41:20.to this new job? What do you family and friends think I Stimac the a

:41:20. > :41:26.all love it. They look at me and say, why are you doing this for

:41:26. > :41:32.free? Absolutely enjoyed it. My mum is always knocking on the door and

:41:32. > :41:37.asking me if I am OK. She is worried when you are out at night a

:41:37. > :41:42.Stimac she does not do it so much now, but when I started. What is

:41:42. > :41:48.the best thing for you? I love everything about it. And you get to

:41:48. > :41:53.meet so many different people as well? Yes, it is just brilliant. We

:41:53. > :41:59.wish you all the very best for your future. That programme is on at

:41:59. > :42:04.11pm on BBC One. Last week we featured this 19-year-

:42:04. > :42:14.old who police wanted to talk to in connection with a murder in south

:42:14. > :42:19.London. The police are tracing a promising,Of enquiry. Plus we

:42:20. > :42:24.featured this man who failed to turn up to court. The police are

:42:24. > :42:32.following up a lead on that as well because of pure information.

:42:32. > :42:36.What are you up to tomorrow? I am finding out how West Midlands

:42:36. > :42:40.police are training a new generation of specialist stocks.

:42:40. > :42:48.And on a more serious note, how they are tackling the link between

:42:48. > :42:53.drugs and gangs. That is tomorrow. For more details on today's

:42:53. > :42:58.programme had to the website. Finally, we are going to leave you
