:00:07. > :00:14.Good morning. We are live and ready for your calls. We are with the

:00:15. > :00:19.police asking for your help to hunt down criminals near you. Today,

:00:20. > :00:23.dozens of arson attacks have left this town struggling to survive. I

:00:24. > :00:28.don't think the people who do this sort of thing think for one second

:00:29. > :00:33.about the impact it has. And we all love CSI drama. Sian finds out what

:00:34. > :00:38.it takes to become a real crime scene investigator. I couldn't see

:00:39. > :00:40.anything at all before, but it looks like there are some prints on the

:00:41. > :01:02.glass. This is Crimewatch Roadshow. Good morning and welcome to

:01:03. > :01:05.Crimewatch Roadshow. Everyday, we are out and about with the bobbies

:01:06. > :01:11.on the beat, helping them to collar criminals. Today: The mother home

:01:12. > :01:21.alone when robbers came searching for gold. She had bangles on her

:01:22. > :01:25.hands which were viciously taken. And how safe is the lock on your

:01:26. > :01:30.front door? Could it be snapped open in less than 20 seconds? Keep

:01:31. > :01:37.watching and you will find out. Today, Sian is in County Durham at a

:01:38. > :01:42.real police Academy. Good morning. I am at the forensic

:01:43. > :01:45.training centre in Harperley Hall, where officers come from all over

:01:46. > :01:50.the UK to learn how to gather evidence from crime scenes. Later, I

:01:51. > :01:58.will be having a few lessons myself. It is a fascinating place. But first

:01:59. > :02:01.to the town of Stanley in County Durham which has suffered almost a

:02:02. > :02:12.hundred arson attacks in the last six years. It takes a lot to recover

:02:13. > :02:21.from what they have done. It has affected the whole community.

:02:22. > :02:29.Stanley is an old-fashioned market town. Its high street is home to a

:02:30. > :02:34.number of independent shop he does. Stanley is a lovely community. A lot

:02:35. > :02:40.of the traders are family run businesses who employ friends and

:02:41. > :02:45.family full of it is not really a large town, but it is our town. Two

:02:46. > :02:50.weeks before Christmas last year, Stanley high Street was gearing up

:02:51. > :02:56.for it easiest time of year. But the gift the town was about to receive

:02:57. > :03:01.wasn't on anyone's Christmas list. In the early hours of Friday

:03:02. > :03:05.morning, a wheelie bin in the town centre was set alight. It was the

:03:06. > :03:07.latest in a long series of fires that have plagued the town in recent

:03:08. > :03:28.years. The local fire brigade raced to the

:03:29. > :03:34.scene. First to arrive was Crewe manager Graham Carr. We could

:03:35. > :03:51.clearly see that it spreads to numerous buildings. The blaze was

:03:52. > :03:57.captured on CCTV cameras. The heat and smoke were very disorientating.

:03:58. > :04:01.That is what can cause problems. These buildings are susceptible to

:04:02. > :04:07.partial collapse when you have a fire of this magnitude. This was a

:04:08. > :04:10.very intense fire. The fire was so for atrocious that the structure of

:04:11. > :04:17.the building was weakened. One firefighter was hit by a falling

:04:18. > :04:20.chunk of masonry. One of the issues here is that people don't

:04:21. > :04:25.understand, they think it might be a prank, a bit of fun to start a fire.

:04:26. > :04:29.But they are putting people's lives at risk.

:04:30. > :04:35.News of the blaze spread swiftly to local shopkeepers. I was informed

:04:36. > :04:41.about the fire I text message from a friend of mine, and it simply red, I

:04:42. > :04:46.think your shop is on fire. I grabbed my car keys and drove up to

:04:47. > :04:47.the shop. It took 42 firefighters and eight

:04:48. > :04:52.fire engines to bring It took 42 firefighters and eight

:04:53. > :05:01.under control, and all because of one act of arson. There were three

:05:02. > :05:07.of us had premises all stuck together watching the fire. We all

:05:08. > :05:16.had floods of tears, umpteen cups of coffee. I couldn't stand and watch.

:05:17. > :05:18.It was so sad to see that everything was gone, everything was ruined.

:05:19. > :05:24.Ceilings had collapsed. It was was gone, everything was ruined.

:05:25. > :05:29.I realised nothing could be salvaged. Over the past five years,

:05:30. > :05:35.Stanley has been struck by arsonists 87 times. Two fires were serious

:05:36. > :05:40.enough to destroy parts of the town. The local community have left

:05:41. > :05:45.struggling to pick up the pieces. What it does is it has the effect of

:05:46. > :05:52.making towns like Stanley, which were once thriving market towns,

:05:53. > :05:56.basically into a ghost town. A chap came in the other day, you hadn't

:05:57. > :06:01.been in for months, and everybody was under the impression that these

:06:02. > :06:04.buildings are no longer occupied. I don't think the people that do this

:06:05. > :06:09.thing for one second about the impact it has, not just on the day

:06:10. > :06:17.but long term on the reputation of the whole area. In one fell swoop,

:06:18. > :06:25.but long term on the reputation of like Stanley. It is not a victimless

:06:26. > :06:28.crime. This really has rocked the community, and TI Gavin Heckles is

:06:29. > :06:31.crime. This really has rocked the with me now. A shocking statistic,

:06:32. > :06:37.this one. 87 deliberate fires since 2009. Any deliberate fire is

:06:38. > :06:39.this one. 87 deliberate fires since ludicrous, but in this case, there

:06:40. > :06:45.have been 28 separate fires since 2012, this fire being the most

:06:46. > :06:48.serious of those. In November last year there was a fire at a local

:06:49. > :06:54.Chinese restaurant. That was accidental. But they have been a

:06:55. > :06:59.number of wheelie bin fires, leading up to this really destructive one.

:07:00. > :07:06.And with regards to this very serious fire, any idea when it was

:07:07. > :07:09.started? We know it started after 5am on December 13. There were

:07:10. > :07:12.delivery drivers and people starting their working day around the area,

:07:13. > :07:19.and we believe they may well have seen some will stop how was it

:07:20. > :07:22.started, then? A wheelie bin has been moved towards the back of the

:07:23. > :07:27.building and it has been ignited, and the fats and packaging caught

:07:28. > :07:31.fire really quickly and spread throughout the building. The fire

:07:32. > :07:36.was well publicised in the local area, and Stanley remains one of the

:07:37. > :07:42.safest places to live in County Durham and Darlington. It was

:07:43. > :07:46.publicised on local media and social networking, so we are keen to hear

:07:47. > :07:52.from anybody who knows anything. If you can help, get in touch with us

:07:53. > :07:55.as a matter of urgency. For centuries, churches of stunned

:07:56. > :07:58.at the heart of every town and village. But with dwindling

:07:59. > :08:04.congregations, many of our most historic buildings are becoming easy

:08:05. > :08:13.pickings for thieves. Dr Neal Ruch -- Dr Neal Rushton, theft from

:08:14. > :08:19.churches is becoming a real problem, isn't it? Yes, it is. Lead and

:08:20. > :08:22.copper from rooms has been the main problem, but over the last year or

:08:23. > :08:30.so, the fixtures and fittings, things inside the church. It seems

:08:31. > :08:33.that the problem is moving to the inside. There are couple of cases

:08:34. > :08:43.you want our viewers to help you with today. Talk me through the

:08:44. > :08:47.first one. This is holy Trinity Church in a lovely part of North

:08:48. > :08:53.Devon. It has a screen with these panels attached. Prices, unique,

:08:54. > :08:58.late medieval religious art. And as you can see, two of them awhile ago

:08:59. > :09:02.were stolen. They were cut out and probably stolen to order. It is

:09:03. > :09:06.unbelievable that someone would steal that. And they are

:09:07. > :09:10.irreplaceable, you would be able to go out and buy another one. You want

:09:11. > :09:15.them back and you want to know who has done it? It is devastating for

:09:16. > :09:21.the local community, and a terrible upset. There is another one as well,

:09:22. > :09:25.this time in Essex. This is from Halsted in Essex, a processional

:09:26. > :09:29.cross which would go ahead of processions during services. It is

:09:30. > :09:44.about 50 centimetres high, very heavy, a very distinctive Agnus Dei

:09:45. > :09:49.printed across the cross. We think they have been stolen to order, but

:09:50. > :09:56.where they have gone, we don't know. It is a very distinctive brass

:09:57. > :10:01.thing, and you want it back? We certainly do. Thank you for joining

:10:02. > :10:06.us today. If you have any information on these thefts, please

:10:07. > :10:12.do get in touch. Time now for a mysterious case, but don't worry, we

:10:13. > :10:16.have a crack team on it. It is almost closing time travel

:10:17. > :10:20.agent in Durham, and inside, the sales assistant at dealing with the

:10:21. > :10:26.last customer of the day. In the street outside, two men are looking

:10:27. > :10:26.on. The staff are about to meet some people who certainly aren't looking

:10:27. > :11:01.for a holiday. Luckily, that wasn't a real robbery,

:11:02. > :11:05.if you hadn't guessed already. This is one of a number of crime scenes

:11:06. > :11:12.used to teach students the skills they need to recover evidence, and

:11:13. > :11:16.today, I'm going to have a go. Based outside Durham, the college is

:11:17. > :11:19.world renowned as a centre of teaching excellence, so before I am

:11:20. > :11:24.let loose on the crime scene, I will need to go back to school. Welcome

:11:25. > :11:32.to the classroom. Before you can go out and do your own scenes of crime,

:11:33. > :11:37.I need to teach you some basic CSI techniques. First we will look at

:11:38. > :11:46.fingerprinting. You need to check if it is a rough service. That is

:11:47. > :11:50.rough, you can feel indentations. And you need to think about if it is

:11:51. > :12:02.porous or nonporous. If it is porous, dusting for fingerprints

:12:03. > :12:07.needs to happen quickly. If it is not porous, I can fingerprinting at

:12:08. > :12:13.the scene. I can put some fingerprints down like that. Take

:12:14. > :12:20.the brush and dust along the edge of this bottle. Can you see the

:12:21. > :12:28.fingerprints coming up? They would be fine for an identification. Well

:12:29. > :12:36.done. This is lessened two. Burglars cannot fly. There will be footwear

:12:37. > :12:40.marks within the scene. So this test shows me how to find footprint that

:12:41. > :12:42.might not be obvious to the naked eye using foil. I will pass an

:12:43. > :12:48.electric charge through it, turn this on. It is causing the dust

:12:49. > :12:52.particles from the paper to stick to the silver foil, and I will pull

:12:53. > :12:58.that up and it will have been transferred. So you will be able to

:12:59. > :13:01.see this here, and if I show you this lighting technique, I just

:13:02. > :13:06.picked this up, and you can clearly see the footprint. This is really

:13:07. > :13:11.good evidence for collecting samples.

:13:12. > :13:18.So these are some of the things I need to use.

:13:19. > :13:24.I am all kitted up and beginning to feel the part, is of the first thing

:13:25. > :13:32.I have to do is gather some information. To start off with, I am

:13:33. > :13:37.going to photograph the scene. There are some cartridges on the floor

:13:38. > :13:45.here. I need to record thing I see that I think is important.

:13:46. > :13:50.Photography over, I now think I need to start thinking about what I would

:13:51. > :14:00.want to gather. And I have just noticed now I have

:14:01. > :14:03.come over here and there are a couple of cigarette buts. Evidence

:14:04. > :14:06.that can't be tested couple of cigarette buts. Evidence

:14:07. > :14:10.that can't be at the scene has to be sent to the lab for analysis.

:14:11. > :14:20.I am going to get on with doing some fingerprinting. I think I can see

:14:21. > :14:23.something up in this corner. I couldn't see anything at all before,

:14:24. > :14:28.but it looks like there are some prints on the glass, which if

:14:29. > :14:33.someone ran in a put their hands on there, it might look like that.

:14:34. > :14:36.It is time for all of the evidence I have gathered to go to the lab for

:14:37. > :14:42.testing. All I can do now is wait for the results will stop

:14:43. > :14:46.it is all coming back to me now. I did give it my best shot. Ian

:14:47. > :14:52.Wilson, you are training here. How did I do? You did very well, but the

:14:53. > :14:55.scene tells us the story. You did capture that story, but let's have a

:14:56. > :15:00.look at the photographs of some of the things you did do quite so well.

:15:01. > :15:04.We have the photographs here. I wasn't absolutely sure that I did

:15:05. > :15:08.have the camera in focus, because normally and the other side of the

:15:09. > :15:17.camera. Take us through the photographs that I did act fully

:15:18. > :15:19.managed to capture here. Well, you've got some nice close-up views

:15:20. > :15:26.of various aspects of the evidence. you've got some nice close-up views

:15:27. > :15:31.You did actually recover a potential but where Mark, but you were a bit

:15:32. > :15:39.quick in putting that evidence into a bag. Perhaps that might have

:15:40. > :15:47.compromised it a bit. You had a piece of paper with a hair on it.

:15:48. > :15:50.You used tweezers and then you went on to recover other items with the

:15:51. > :15:53.same tweezers. That could cause a problem later on. It might be

:15:54. > :16:00.necessary to prove where the problem later on. It might be

:16:01. > :16:04.of DNA came from. So by using tweezers twice, it is compromised.

:16:05. > :16:07.So definitely tweezers twice, it is compromised.

:16:08. > :16:11.do! Now, there can be many tweezers twice, it is compromised.

:16:12. > :16:16.scenes related to one incident, so we had the armed robber taking place

:16:17. > :16:23.in there, and there was a getaway car. Normally a different team would

:16:24. > :16:27.be looking at those cars so there would not be any evidence

:16:28. > :16:34.contamination. Tom, you are going to talk me through how you would

:16:35. > :16:39.examine the car. We would initially do a visual exam using white light.

:16:40. > :16:43.And now I will show you the high-intensity light. It causes

:16:44. > :16:51.fluorescence. The point is to see things we wouldn't normally see,

:16:52. > :16:58.things like finger marks. Blood does not show up but the background does,

:16:59. > :17:02.so it is ideal. This is a speculative search, if you like. It

:17:03. > :17:08.is nondestructive so it allows us to do things afterwards. We get mended

:17:09. > :17:17.treatments such as powder suspension. And we need specialist

:17:18. > :17:21.equipment. Yes, if everybody could put on these goggles, we need them

:17:22. > :17:30.for help and safety because the light is so bright it could brighten

:17:31. > :17:36.-- it could damage your eyes. It looks different with the different

:17:37. > :17:42.cameras. It does, one camera does not have the filter on it, so it

:17:43. > :17:47.does not show up. We have a yellow filter, and that cancels out the

:17:48. > :17:51.bright light and just shows up the fluorescence. So we can see some

:17:52. > :18:03.kind of contaminant on the door handle and the brain. That is clear.

:18:04. > :18:31.Thank you very much. Now, time to look at some wanted faces.

:18:32. > :18:35.First up today is Thomas Jacob. He was charged with

:18:36. > :18:37.making threats to kill, but failed to turn up in court

:18:38. > :18:40.and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Originally from

:18:41. > :18:41.Sri Lanka, the 32-year-old has links to West London, but

:18:42. > :18:44.where is he now? Now let's take a look at this pair.

:18:45. > :18:46.24-year-old Aidarus Yusef. And this man, Mohamed Ali.

:18:47. > :18:49.24-year-old Aidarus Yusef. a man was followed

:18:50. > :18:51.as he got off a bus and his They're both wanted

:18:52. > :18:54.for questioning about a robbery later used to buy goods

:18:55. > :18:56.worth more than ?5,000. Yusef and Ali are originally from

:18:57. > :18:59.Somalia but now have links to the His bank cards were later used to

:19:00. > :19:02.buy goods worth more than ?5,000. described as being of a

:19:03. > :19:04.slim build and small frame and sports a goatee beard.

:19:05. > :19:07.Whilst 23-year-old Mohamed Ali is Yusef is described as being

:19:08. > :19:10.of a slim build and small frame and sports a goatee beard.

:19:11. > :19:15.those faces look familiar? If you can help, then pick up

:19:16. > :19:18.a distinctive pointed nose. 63399. It's free to call from most

:19:19. > :19:21.landlines, but calls or texts from mobiles will be

:19:22. > :19:24.charged at your usual rate. If you can help,

:19:25. > :19:27.then pick up the phone now and call us on 08000 468 999.

:19:28. > :19:29.Or text us on 63399. It's free to call

:19:30. > :19:32.from most landlines, but calls or texts from mobiles will

:19:33. > :19:33.be charged at your usual rate. Or send us an e-mail.

:19:34. > :19:43.The address is on your screen now. Still to come: A collection which

:19:44. > :19:52.meant the world to its owner. She adored it. Now, back to January, and

:19:53. > :19:56.a vicious assault which left a man seriously injured.

:19:57. > :19:59.I'm joined now by DI Mark Dimelow from Cleveland Police - Mark,

:20:00. > :20:02.you're still trying to find out who carried out this attack.

:20:03. > :20:05.On Thursday 30th January at approximately 7.30

:20:06. > :20:08.in the evening Gerard was sitting on a bench alongside Acklam Road in

:20:09. > :20:11.Middlesbrough - he sits there often and is known to passers-by.Witnesses

:20:12. > :20:15.saw a male wearing a black balaclava and a boiler suit running towards

:20:16. > :20:17.the bench, where Gerard was sitting, holding what appeared to be

:20:18. > :20:20.a cricket or baseball bat in his right hand.

:20:21. > :20:25.The male repeatedly strikes Gerard across his body including his face.

:20:26. > :20:31.But that wasn't the end of the attack, was it?

:20:32. > :20:34.No, he walks away but then actually comes back to

:20:35. > :20:42.strike him with the bat another five times using all the force he could.

:20:43. > :20:44.Now, you have some CCTV from a nearby street taken

:20:45. > :20:53.And we can see that it shows a car pulling up, and a man getting

:20:54. > :21:00.We then see another person running in towards that car and then back

:21:01. > :21:20.It is possibly a blue Renault Meganne with a 53 plate.

:21:21. > :21:26.We believe this could be a woman and that she has vital information,

:21:27. > :21:30.and we'd like to ask them to come forward.

:21:31. > :21:33.Do you have a description of the offender?

:21:34. > :21:36.He is about 6'2", stocky build, wearing an old style mechanic suit

:21:37. > :21:41.like a blue boiler suit with high viz stripes on it like this one.

:21:42. > :21:43.And Gerard's injuries were very serious?

:21:44. > :21:46.He had serious brain injuries - he was placed in an induced coma

:21:47. > :21:50.and he will have long term problems due to this assault.

:21:51. > :21:53.Well, there's a lot of information there - if it's

:21:54. > :21:59.Now, we all like to feel safe in our own home,

:22:00. > :22:03.but for our next victim, a robbery that took place one Monday morning

:22:04. > :22:06.She's too scared to be interviewed so her husband

:22:07. > :22:25.Early in the morning in a Middlesbrough suburb, a local GP was

:22:26. > :22:30.at his surgery. I left home at 7:50am and got there at eight

:22:31. > :22:35.o'clock. I was expecting to come back at 1pm. My wife and I go out

:22:36. > :22:41.for lunch on that day and pick up the children from school together.

:22:42. > :22:48.He has been a GP here for almost 40 years. He and his wife have brought

:22:49. > :22:54.up their family in the town. My wife is very petite, smaller than five

:22:55. > :22:59.feet, she was very happy-go-lucky, always laughing and smiling. She was

:23:00. > :23:05.central at any party, always laughing. While Doctor Mohammed was

:23:06. > :23:09.at work, his wife was doing some housework. She was expecting a visit

:23:10. > :23:16.from her brother, says she was not surprised to hear a knock at the

:23:17. > :23:21.door. A young chap with a baby face, about 15 or 16 knocked at the

:23:22. > :23:27.door. Because this was previously a nursing home, she thought he was

:23:28. > :23:33.looking for a job. Thinking the boy was an innocent caller, she opened

:23:34. > :23:41.the door. Suddenly, a man in a balaclava burst into the house. As

:23:42. > :23:47.soon as she saw the other guy, she started screaming. Then he punched

:23:48. > :23:55.her. The force of the punch was so hard it broke her nose. He then

:23:56. > :24:00.grabbed her headscarf and forced her downwards. They kept shouting at

:24:01. > :24:05.her, saying, don't look at me. Whenever she looked up, she would be

:24:06. > :24:11.hit by the man in the balaclava. Obviously, she is very traumatised,

:24:12. > :24:17.she is screaming, crying, saying, leave me alone. They force into the

:24:18. > :24:22.living room the address. The men eventually explain why they are

:24:23. > :24:30.there. They say they want money and jewellery. Frustrated by her cries,

:24:31. > :24:34.they show a black bag. They told her it contained a knife and a gun and

:24:35. > :24:39.threatened to use them if she did not keep quiet. Then, they stole

:24:40. > :24:43.money from her handbag and dragged her from her house. They forced her

:24:44. > :24:52.to kneel before ripping off her jewellery. She had some bangles on

:24:53. > :24:57.her hands which were viciously taken as though the hands didn't exist.

:24:58. > :25:01.They scratched the back of her hands. While they discussed their

:25:02. > :25:07.next move, she saw an opportunity to escape. She decided to make a run

:25:08. > :25:12.for it and get into the bedroom so she could lock the door and call the

:25:13. > :25:19.police. But they were too fast. As she tried to close the door, they

:25:20. > :25:23.barged in. She was calling my name and the guy in the balaclava said,

:25:24. > :25:28.we know your husband is not here, we know he is at the surgery this time.

:25:29. > :25:36.She kept shouting and then he punched her. The robbers made her

:25:37. > :25:40.empty out her jewellery boxes before forcing her down on the bed. They

:25:41. > :25:48.helped themselves to over ?20,000 of valuables. Still not content with

:25:49. > :25:57.their haul, they spotted another target. They told her, open the safe

:25:58. > :26:01.for us. She informs them she is not able to open it, only her husband

:26:02. > :26:08.can do it, but they tell her, if she does not do it, they will chop a

:26:09. > :26:15.hands-off. She had no choice. They helped themselves to ?15,000 of

:26:16. > :26:20.cash. They make their escape, locking a frightened, beaten and

:26:21. > :26:37.bruised woman in her own room. Hello, police.

:26:38. > :26:38.bruised woman in her own room. and locked me in? Since the

:26:39. > :26:42.incident, she has become very and locked me in? Since the

:26:43. > :26:46.withdrawn. Quite often, she is sitting there and she will start

:26:47. > :26:49.withdrawn. Quite often, she is crying. At night,

:26:50. > :26:52.withdrawn. Quite often, she is screaming and crying. The whole life

:26:53. > :27:01.of the family has completely been turned upside down. My wife doesn't

:27:02. > :27:05.want to live here. There is always somebody with her, we nevertheless

:27:06. > :27:15.leave her on her own, but she still does not want to live here because

:27:16. > :27:18.of what has happened. Paul, this was a vicious attack on a woman by

:27:19. > :27:33.yourself in her own home. Do you think

:27:34. > :27:50.The criminals got away with thousands of pounds

:27:51. > :27:53.and several items of jewellery - tell us about the jewellery.

:27:54. > :27:57.The pieces of jewellery that were stolen were of great

:27:58. > :28:07.One set was especially made for her wedding day.

:28:08. > :28:10.The second set was given to her as a gift from her husband's family.

:28:11. > :28:13.Both sets consist of a headpiece, a necklace - often known

:28:14. > :28:16.as a tikka - and earrings - both stolen and irreplaceable.

:28:17. > :28:17.The victim also had 12 bangles stolen.

:28:18. > :28:28.What do you think the robbers will have done with it?

:28:29. > :28:32.The robbers could have tried to sell them in local jewellery stores.

:28:33. > :28:34.If someone has bought or been offered it,

:28:35. > :28:53.Obviously the currency may have been sold or traded as local shops.

:28:54. > :28:56.How can the public help, do you have a description of the perpetrators?

:28:57. > :28:59.We are looking for two males, one young white boy about 16,

:29:00. > :29:01.with a round baby face with blondish hair and was wearing

:29:02. > :29:05.The second male is older, he wore dark clothing,

:29:06. > :29:25.a balaclava and as we saw in the films, yellow washing up gloves.

:29:26. > :29:31.If anybody has found gloves similar to that around 10:30am on the 9th of

:29:32. > :29:35.October last year, please get in touch.

:29:36. > :29:38.It's worth pointing out that the family no longer keeps cash or

:29:39. > :29:42.And a reward of up to ?5,000 is being offered by the victim for any

:29:43. > :29:46.information that leads to the arrest conviction of those responsible.

:29:47. > :29:48.Anyone with information can pass it on anonymously by contacting

:29:49. > :30:13.The burglars in the site definitely have a nose for crime. They target a

:30:14. > :30:17.high street pharmacy in South Wales town steal posh perfume, and these

:30:18. > :30:26.guys won't be caught sleeping on the job. Having kicked in a glass door

:30:27. > :30:39.panel, they use a duvet to bag 8500 pounds of fragrance. Recognise this

:30:40. > :30:44.pair? Then pick up the phone? The victim in our next film is both

:30:45. > :30:47.brave and lucky. He has just finished serving a woman and a child

:30:48. > :30:52.in this Greenwich shop went to wooded men walking. One club is on

:30:53. > :30:57.to the counter, but the shopkeeper fights back. During the chaos, a

:30:58. > :30:59.mother flees with a baby in a pushchair. The struggle between the

:31:00. > :31:05.two men continues until the shop Youga throws him off. With that, the

:31:06. > :31:08.robber leaves. At his accomplice isn't going yet, and stands by the

:31:09. > :31:13.door waving a knife at another staff member. The shopkeeper confronts

:31:14. > :31:18.him, then walks calmly back behind the counter to make a phone call.

:31:19. > :31:24.The man doesn't hang on to find out if used Eileen 999. Detectives say

:31:25. > :31:29.the raiders left with nothing and need your help to identify them. --

:31:30. > :31:36.the man doesn't hang on to find out if he is dialling 999.

:31:37. > :31:44.It seems the man walking into this Hampshire shop can't get enough of

:31:45. > :31:48.health and beauty products. He steals ?300 of razors, razor blades

:31:49. > :31:52.and cosmetic creams in five separate days. The store's camera film him

:31:53. > :31:56.visiting the same aisle again and again, taking handfuls of items from

:31:57. > :32:01.the shelves and putting them in his basket before making a quick exit.

:32:02. > :32:04.On one trip, he even takes the basket home.

:32:05. > :32:06.If you recognise any of that light-fingered lot,

:32:07. > :32:11.Give us a call, or send us a text - you need to type

:32:12. > :32:14.in CW then leave a space to make sure your message gets through.

:32:15. > :32:26.Now, if you have a lock on your door a little like this, then you need to

:32:27. > :32:31.pay attention, because you could be at risk of a particular type of

:32:32. > :32:48.raking known as locks napping. Neal, good morning. What is this technique

:32:49. > :32:52.known as lock snapping? It is an easy way to get into property. And

:32:53. > :32:58.this is a particular problem in North Yorkshire? Yes, it was 40% of

:32:59. > :33:04.all burglaries. But it is dropped down to 25%, but it is spreading. We

:33:05. > :33:07.can see how simple this is. We are not going to show exactly what they

:33:08. > :33:12.do, but you have pretended to be a burglar, and we have got you on film

:33:13. > :33:16.now, and we're going to try new. While you are having a go at this

:33:17. > :33:20.door here, you don't have any professional locksmith tools or

:33:21. > :33:26.anything? It is just basic tools you could get from your shed. And I am

:33:27. > :33:31.told it is going to be much less than minutes before you get in.

:33:32. > :33:39.There you go, 15 seconds. That is exactly how a burglar could do it.

:33:40. > :33:44.But it is not that bad because we can do subbing about this quite

:33:45. > :33:53.easily. We have been working with manufacturers on the new standards

:33:54. > :34:03.of coming out, and the new 000 seven three star. Yes, the one with these

:34:04. > :34:08.three stars on the top, and this is what they would look like. I don't

:34:09. > :34:13.know if we can see that on camera. Just on their other top by my finger

:34:14. > :34:16.there are three stars you can see. That is what you are looking for.

:34:17. > :34:22.People don't need to change the entire door, do they? They don't

:34:23. > :34:30.need to change the locking mechanism or the handle. Roughly how much

:34:31. > :34:38.would it cost? Around ?50. And it could keep the much safer. I think a

:34:39. > :34:42.lot of people will be going to check their locks.

:34:43. > :34:46.And if you're worried about your locks, have a look at our website.

:34:47. > :34:51.Well, we've moved outside now into the grounds of the Forensic Training

:34:52. > :34:54.Centre where there's what appears to be a very busy crime scene.

:34:55. > :34:56.Paul Dearing leads the forensic trainers here

:34:57. > :35:14.We have set up a serious assault scene with a path up to the crime

:35:15. > :35:17.scene so we can safely access it. We have a tent in the background that

:35:18. > :35:22.is preserving some of the fragile evidence that we might lose

:35:23. > :35:25.otherwise. We see those quite often on the news, and that is because

:35:26. > :35:37.there is something going on in there quite often. The purpose for the

:35:38. > :35:41.tent is to give us the opportunity to recover three-dimensional

:35:42. > :35:43.footwear marks. The two main methods are photography, which one half of

:35:44. > :35:53.the group are doing, and ultimately casting footprint will. The

:35:54. > :35:59.footprint can clearly be seen in the mud. What we do is mix three agents

:36:00. > :36:04.together, and that is poured into the mark. Gravity helps it to sink

:36:05. > :36:09.down, and it will give out all of the relevant detail so that we can

:36:10. > :36:11.later recover it, and that will then get submitted to the forensic

:36:12. > :36:22.laboratory where they can analyse the mark, get as much intelligence

:36:23. > :36:26.from it is humanly possible. Size and direction might even help. We

:36:27. > :36:31.get a multitude of information from these marks. If we fail to take

:36:32. > :36:38.these casts, we lose that information. And this is the cast

:36:39. > :36:42.that has been completed, isn't it? This is an excellent one, with all

:36:43. > :36:46.the real detail that has been brought up with the medium we have

:36:47. > :36:51.used. The indentation, pressure, there is even somewhere on the outs

:36:52. > :36:55.wide there. And you are trying to get inside the mind of the criminal

:36:56. > :36:59.here, because this scene is important, and I guess outside, not

:37:00. > :37:10.just the stuff in the lamb for the students. We teach people how to

:37:11. > :37:16.recover evidence, but understanding that environmental areas might

:37:17. > :37:19.restrict the evidence, that gives real understanding to their

:37:20. > :37:23.training. And how do you find it is going? I

:37:24. > :37:27.have come from South Yorkshire, and I think it is fantastic. You get the

:37:28. > :37:31.theory in the classroom, but then you get the chance to come out and

:37:32. > :37:38.do a real-life simulation and butcher article skills into

:37:39. > :37:46.practice. Thank you, it is the fascinating to see -- put your

:37:47. > :37:51.practical skills into practice. Now we go to talk to a family left

:37:52. > :37:56.devastated by the loss of their precious heirlooms.

:37:57. > :38:03.It was a very sad day when we lost our mum.

:38:04. > :38:06.When Patrick smothered died, he was left with fond memories and a

:38:07. > :38:10.precious collection of jewellery and porcelain. She took pride and joy

:38:11. > :38:20.and stuff. Her pride porcelain. She took pride and joy

:38:21. > :38:32.Crown Derby collection. Plates, cut is, tea sets. There was a kettle is,

:38:33. > :38:41.of horse-drawn wagon, flower jars. Bowls, dishes. Royal Crown Derby is

:38:42. > :38:45.one of bingo was my oldest producers of fine china. Their delicate

:38:46. > :38:49.designs and world heritage make them popular collectors items. They are

:38:50. > :38:58.particularly prized by the travelling community. She adored it.

:38:59. > :38:59.She would sit drinking a cup of tea watching the Cabinet, looking at her

:39:00. > :39:10.things. But not everyone who collect this

:39:11. > :39:16.high-end crockery is willing to pay for it. On March the 15th, Patrick

:39:17. > :39:21.and his family were out celebrating his son's birthday. While they were

:39:22. > :39:25.enjoying the party, thieves were breaking into their house. First,

:39:26. > :39:30.they tried the conservatory. They then fetched a ladder and Rob came

:39:31. > :39:37.through an upstairs window. Once inside, they wreaked havoc, grabbing

:39:38. > :39:43.cash, jewellery, a tablet computer and all of Patrick's mother's much

:39:44. > :39:47.loved Crown Derby collection. They even used the family sheets to carry

:39:48. > :39:58.it all away. They left with a haul worth between ?30,000-50,000. The

:39:59. > :40:06.house was just ransacked. They ripped all of the blinds down,

:40:07. > :40:11.everything. Mud all over. It was a terrible experience. The thieves had

:40:12. > :40:17.even stolen earrings left to Patrick's wife by his mother. My

:40:18. > :40:24.granny bought them for my mum, and she passed on down to my wife. She

:40:25. > :40:33.did say to my wife, one day, when I leave this earth, when I get buried,

:40:34. > :40:35.you wear them earrings. For Patrick and the family, the loss of their

:40:36. > :40:42.mother's things has been heartbreaking. I was distraught, to

:40:43. > :40:50.tell you the truth. Devastated. You never think it is going to happen to

:40:51. > :40:53.you. DC Anthony Kent is with me now. The things taken were so precious to

:40:54. > :41:03.the family. What exactly was stolen? Quite a large amount of tea

:41:04. > :41:11.was stolen. Part of that collection is some crockery which is Royal

:41:12. > :41:17.Crown Derby, Old Imari Japan style. It has a value of between ?25,000

:41:18. > :41:23.and ?50,000. There was various amounts of money stolen, jewellery

:41:24. > :41:29.including a solid gold bangle, some American dollar earrings, and an

:41:30. > :41:33.iPad. Do you think there was more than one person involved? I believe

:41:34. > :41:40.there was, given the quantity of property that has been taken from

:41:41. > :41:45.the address will stop there was possibly a waiting vehicle nearby.

:41:46. > :41:52.So how can the public help? If they can contact us if they know anything

:41:53. > :41:56.about the robbery. The people responsible for it, or if they have

:41:57. > :41:59.been offered the property for sale, they could contact us to help us

:42:00. > :42:04.reunite Patrick with his mother's belongings.

:42:05. > :42:08.A quick update for you now. Detectives following new leads after

:42:09. > :42:10.we showed you the theft of a builders van containing valuable,

:42:11. > :42:16.and bust of the dog in North Yorkshire. A number of you phoning

:42:17. > :42:23.saying it was a Toyota land cruiser spotted in the area, not a

:42:24. > :42:26.Mitsubishi. Plus potential new leads on the CCTV yesterday of

:42:27. > :42:29.passengers' luggage being stolen from a train, and police had

:42:30. > :42:36.positive information come through on one of our Wanted Faces. So, thanks

:42:37. > :42:40.for that. Sian, where will you be tomorrow?

:42:41. > :42:45.We are off to Seaham Harbour Marine A, where we have a sporting theme

:42:46. > :42:50.going on. Olympic medallist Rhona Martin is appealing for your help to

:42:51. > :42:53.try to find her gold medal. Also a huge increase in the amount of

:42:54. > :42:59.thefts of fishing tackle across the UK. We will be looking at that, and

:43:00. > :43:03.a new scheme to foil those thieves. Thank you, Sian. If you would like

:43:04. > :43:09.to watch any of the CCTV featured in today's programme again, heads our

:43:10. > :43:13.website, and you will also find details of our Wanted Faces. I will

:43:14. > :43:16.leave you with them now, because somebody out there knows who would

:43:17. > :43:19.where they are. Take care.
