:00:17. > :00:20.baddies behind bars. A young man's life damaged forever after a single

:00:21. > :00:26.punch. I woke up in hospital. There was two detectives by my bed and I

:00:27. > :00:30.didn't know what had happened. And the exciting new technology helping

:00:31. > :00:35.police tackle mobile phone theft. It can tell if it is on a person's

:00:36. > :00:38.body, if they have got it in their pocket or handbag. You're watching

:00:39. > :01:06.Crimewatch Roadshow. Hello and welcome and we need just a

:01:07. > :01:12.little more help from you to crack unsolved crimes. Today, who broke

:01:13. > :01:16.into a metal container to steal a charity's Gaddening equipment.

:01:17. > :01:24.They're just a bunch of rats. That's all they are. And a new tactic used

:01:25. > :01:27.by thieves to distract victims. Puncturing their tyres. It is our

:01:28. > :01:40.last day in the north-east and Sian is by the river in Newcastle. Good

:01:41. > :01:46.morning. I'm here the quayside at Newcastle upon Tyne. But busy city

:01:47. > :01:51.centres do provide unique policing challenges as I will be finding out.

:01:52. > :01:56.First a young man starting out on a promising career until a night out

:01:57. > :02:03.to celebrate a friend's birthday ended with a random but brutal

:02:04. > :02:09.attack. For Stephen Marley, life was about sport. Me and sport's always

:02:10. > :02:12.been a massive part of my life. Normally I have lived for the

:02:13. > :02:18.weekends, trying to get through Monday to Friday just so you can get

:02:19. > :02:27.to Saturday to play football. After graduating, Stephen became a PE

:02:28. > :02:35.teacher. He got a job at Newcastle. Teaching. Which he was pleased with.

:02:36. > :02:41.We were so proud of him. When I moved to the area and there was no

:02:42. > :02:45.one I knew and I wanted to join some teams and make friends and get to

:02:46. > :02:49.know people. He also kept in touch with old friends from home. On a

:02:50. > :02:55.Saturday night two years ago he joined a group celebrating a 21st

:02:56. > :03:02.birthday. I just wanted to go and have a laugh. I just blow off some

:03:03. > :03:10.steam. His friends arrived in town earlier and he joined them in a bar

:03:11. > :03:15.at about 10pm. We were around the Gate area of town, which is well

:03:16. > :03:21.known for hen dos and stag dos. I did say to the lads after we had

:03:22. > :03:25.been in a bar, we will go to the central station area. It is a nicer

:03:26. > :03:36.area. A bit classier. His friends were happy to take his advice. Just

:03:37. > :03:41.before 11. 30 the group headed down Clayton Street. It was a suggest to

:03:42. > :03:46.change Stephen's life. Me and my friend went to the cashpoint and

:03:47. > :03:50.started heading off and bumped into a group of other lads. One knocked

:03:51. > :03:55.into Stephen's friend. There was a quick exchange of words, but all

:03:56. > :04:00.seemed fine. Then out of the blue Stephen was floored by a single

:04:01. > :04:07.punch to the head. As he lay unconscious and bleeding, one of the

:04:08. > :04:13.men ran off down towards the station. I can't remember much of

:04:14. > :04:17.it. I woke up in hospital. There was two detectives by my bed. I didn't

:04:18. > :04:23.know what had happened to me. We got a call about 2. 30 in the morning.

:04:24. > :04:32.From one of his friends to say that he was in hospital. He had got a

:04:33. > :04:37.fractured skull. They told us he was lucky to be alive. His balance had

:04:38. > :04:42.gone. He was constantly being sick. He couldn't walk. He had to be

:04:43. > :04:47.helped. It was horrendous when we saw him that night. Really

:04:48. > :04:55.horrendous. As a result of the attack, Stephen had to spent a week

:04:56. > :05:02.in hospital. For a long time his injuries left him disorientated,

:05:03. > :05:08.dizzy and unable to walk properly. I had fractured a bone in my ear which

:05:09. > :05:18.had done some damage to the nerves. It was like taking a drunk down for

:05:19. > :05:24.a walk. He was rubbing his head. He was just not my Stephen any more.

:05:25. > :05:33.Sorry, I'm going to have to stop, because he isn't. My short-term

:05:34. > :05:39.memory's not as good as it was. I'm currently deaf in my left ear. I'm

:05:40. > :05:45.quite ratty with people. I can lose my temper. Before like I used to be

:05:46. > :05:52.a calm, quiet relaxed person. I feel like it's changed my personality

:05:53. > :05:59.since that happened. He is more introverted. He doesn't go out. He

:06:00. > :06:04.is quiet and a bit more moody. It is a big change in him. I get upset

:06:05. > :06:12.that this person's changed me forever. And I did nothing to them.

:06:13. > :06:17.And why the guy done to me was still just living a happy normal life

:06:18. > :06:29.after he had left me with what I consider a handicap. A shocking case

:06:30. > :06:34.and joining me is DC Calum Meikle. We are going back to 2012. Remind

:06:35. > :06:42.people who may have been there what happened. Yes, the assault took

:06:43. > :06:47.place on a Saturday evening, 26th May 2012. On Clayton Street around

:06:48. > :06:54.the corner from The Gate complex, where Stephen and his friend had

:06:55. > :07:09.been out. You have got some CCTV. Yes the footage shows a male who

:07:10. > :07:13.runs down Clayton Street in Fenkle Street. He is stocky and five foot

:07:14. > :07:17.eight tall and we are keen to speak to him. You think the answer is out

:07:18. > :07:22.there and something knows who did this? Yes, Stephen was out with a

:07:23. > :07:27.large group of friends. The person we would like to speak to was also

:07:28. > :07:32.with a group of friends. It is two years down the line and allegiances

:07:33. > :07:37.do move on and I would urge anyone in the group to come forward, or

:07:38. > :07:44.anybody who recognises that male to come forward. Thank you. So we saw

:07:45. > :07:52.there the devastating effect that just one single blow can have.

:07:53. > :07:56.Joining me are Dave and Pat Rogers who have set up a charity to warn

:07:57. > :08:02.people of the dangers of this. Tell us about what led you to you setting

:08:03. > :08:08.up the charity? Our son, Adam, had been out with friends in Blackburn

:08:09. > :08:13.and he was killed by a single punch after a dispute had broken out with

:08:14. > :08:18.a group of teenagers. He was acting as a peace-maker at the time, trying

:08:19. > :08:23.to calm things down when a young 16-year-old, who was extremely

:08:24. > :08:28.drunk, lost his temper and swung just one punch. Adam was probably

:08:29. > :08:32.unconscious before he hit the ground and couldn't protect himself and his

:08:33. > :08:38.head hit the ground first and he died of his injuries later that day.

:08:39. > :08:44.It is difficult and we appreciate you talking us to. There is some

:08:45. > :08:49.CCTV footage that shows the moments after he did hit the ground. Yes.

:08:50. > :08:54.And his friend were there then. Yes. Trying to help. Very difficult for

:08:55. > :09:00.them. Absolutely. There are the people who there on that night were

:09:01. > :09:04.traumatised by what happened and particularly his friend, Rachael,

:09:05. > :09:11.who looked after him, cradled him and told him everything was all

:09:12. > :09:17.right, even though it was obviously that he was injured. Something

:09:18. > :09:24.positive has come from is in, you're working hard with the campaign. Tell

:09:25. > :09:27.us about it. We wanted something positive, because we were in such a

:09:28. > :09:29.dark place and we knew there were lesson there is a could be
