:00:08. > :00:09.We're live and waiting for your calls.
:00:10. > :00:25.With your help we can catch the crooks who belong behind bars.
:00:26. > :00:34.Today, the retired doctor who foiled a pair of armed robbers. And we are
:00:35. > :00:41.on the front line of a police operation battling gang crime on the
:00:42. > :00:49.streets of London. We believe we have uncut heroin and cocaine. You
:00:50. > :01:16.are watching Crimewatch road show. -- Crimewatch road show.
:01:17. > :01:25.Hello you are watching Crimewatch road show. Today, the lowest of the
:01:26. > :01:34.low, the criminal who targeted a pensioner with a working friend. And
:01:35. > :01:40.the man who targeted a teenager. Sian is in Wapping at the historic
:01:41. > :01:45.docks at Shadwell basin. We will be finding out how police dive teams
:01:46. > :01:51.retrieved evidence from London's waterways and talking to the top
:01:52. > :01:55.brass about clamping down on gangs. First today, pensioner whose quick
:01:56. > :02:02.thinking may have saved his life when he came face-to-face with two
:02:03. > :02:10.armed robbers. He put his hand over my heart and I
:02:11. > :02:19.stopped breathing. They could have been leaving him to die.
:02:20. > :02:24.86-year-old Peter Kershaw has always made sure he keeps himself trim by
:02:25. > :02:30.heading to the gym at least twice a week. I have always been extremely
:02:31. > :02:35.fit. I can run for a bus or run for a train. I am very sweet indeed. I
:02:36. > :02:40.am much better than my trainer at times. But Peter's active lifestyle
:02:41. > :02:54.was to come to an abrupt end when one morning, a stranger came to the
:02:55. > :02:59.door. The man refused to speak. He seemed to be using a form of sign
:03:00. > :03:06.language. Then, without warning, he threw a punch. I was hit really hard
:03:07. > :03:11.in the heart several times. As a doctor, I do know that a blow to the
:03:12. > :03:17.heart can be quite dangerous when you get older. Peter fought back but
:03:18. > :03:27.soon realised his attacker was carrying a gun. After taking a
:03:28. > :03:30.closer look, Peter thought it may be fake. I said, that is an imitation.
:03:31. > :03:35.You can put that one down for starters. The attacker seemed thrown
:03:36. > :03:43.by Peter's response. He then stood back. As if to take a really big
:03:44. > :03:52.strike at bay. I brought my knee up in his crutch as hard as I could.
:03:53. > :03:57.Suddenly, an accomplice appeared. It was now two against one. The
:03:58. > :04:02.86-year-old was soon overwhelmed. The level of violence used against
:04:03. > :04:07.Peter in his home home was hideous. They punched him, kicked him, threw
:04:08. > :04:13.him against a wall. They did not relent wish their attack against
:04:14. > :04:17.him. They left him on the floor. They then started kicking me. As I
:04:18. > :04:22.was making a lot of noise, they gagged me with 80 towel. One of the
:04:23. > :04:30.men ransacked the house for valuables. Peter started to feign
:04:31. > :04:38.illness, pretended to be sick, pretended to be faint and this
:04:39. > :04:42.appeared to worry the attackers. I put my hand over my heart, stopped
:04:43. > :04:47.breathing until I went pink in the face so they would have to take
:04:48. > :04:52.notice of me. He was yelling upstairs for the other chap to come
:04:53. > :04:57.down. The plan worked. At the sight of Peter's apparently worsening
:04:58. > :05:02.condition, the attackers made a sharp exit. They left his house
:05:03. > :05:06.without a second thought for Peter's health or well-being. They
:05:07. > :05:12.could have been leaving him to die. I crawled on my hands and knees into
:05:13. > :05:22.the study and dialled 999. They said, police or ambulance? I said, I
:05:23. > :05:34.need both, I have been attacked and injured. Peter has been left in
:05:35. > :05:38.constant pain. His debilitating injuries have made exercise a thing
:05:39. > :05:46.of the past. His hurt is not just physical. Who would attack a man of
:05:47. > :05:49.86? It is not right. There is something wrong somewhere. They have
:05:50. > :05:55.invaded my privacy which I value very much. I felt they have brought
:05:56. > :05:59.me down in life. This really is a very distressing
:06:00. > :06:05.case. Peter's daughter Christine joins me now. You have seen a real
:06:06. > :06:11.change in your father, having to? I really have. To begin with I thought
:06:12. > :06:16.everything was OK. It has transpired that he has injured his back and
:06:17. > :06:20.knee. He has to be on a mend is amount of morphine. The morphine has
:06:21. > :06:25.side effects. They have caused him to lose a lot of weight. You cannot
:06:26. > :06:29.walk far. You cannot have the life he used to lead. Used to go to town
:06:30. > :06:34.three times a week, he used to go to the gym and he used to take the dog
:06:35. > :06:39.for a walk. None of these he can do. I am hopeful that in six months he
:06:40. > :06:44.can get back to normal. It has been a horrific time for him. I can
:06:45. > :06:59.honestly say it has been a living nightmare. Lets hope does have a
:07:00. > :07:01.speedy recovery. We can talk to DC Anish could tunic who is
:07:02. > :07:09.investigating this case. ?6,000 of items were stolen. Let's speak about
:07:10. > :07:16.some of them -- DC Nish could tunic. There is a Parker gold ten. We would
:07:17. > :07:23.appeal to any dealers who have been offered this item. And also a gold
:07:24. > :07:29.Longines watch which belonged to Peter's father. And tell us about
:07:30. > :07:36.the descriptions? The first man was 2225, dark skinned, Eastern
:07:37. > :07:41.European. He was wearing a cream coloured tracksuit and a pair of
:07:42. > :07:48.white or cream trainers. He was the one who pointed the gun in Peter's
:07:49. > :07:54.face. The second man was slightly shorter, five foot five. The other
:07:55. > :07:59.man was 57. He was carrying a purple or dark grey cloth bag or pillowcase
:08:00. > :08:06.which we believe the items were stolen in -- he was five foot seven.
:08:07. > :08:10.They went down Grey Gardens before going down an alleyway called
:08:11. > :08:11.Adnam's Walk before turning left into rain Road South which
:08:12. > :08:21.unfortunately is where we lost them. Police forces around Britain
:08:22. > :08:23.have been sending us CCTV. Can you help us identify these
:08:24. > :08:35.crooks caught on camera? New Year, a time of goodwill and
:08:36. > :08:39.celebration but that is in short supply in Swansea. Two friends are
:08:40. > :08:43.walking through the street in the early hours when they are approached
:08:44. > :08:51.by a man in a white T-shirt. They are approached by -- they say the
:08:52. > :08:56.man asks to use their mobile phone. He then returns and head-butt one
:08:57. > :09:02.man and smacks the other in the face. Let's name and shame this
:09:03. > :09:08.bully. Tell us who he is. A bank on Vauxhall Bridge Road in
:09:09. > :09:15.London. This man is waiting patiently but he has big plans. He
:09:16. > :09:20.withdraws ?4800. The money is not his. Police say he has managed to
:09:21. > :09:25.get hold of someone else's card. They believe he later used the same
:09:26. > :09:30.card in several other branches of the same bank. In total, it is
:09:31. > :09:34.reckoned he steals a massive 42 ground from the same account from
:09:35. > :09:42.someone living in Essex. Name, please.
:09:43. > :09:46.The two guys in this restore bookies are not planning on making a bet.
:09:47. > :09:50.They gamble on being able to distract the staff member. They
:09:51. > :09:55.start with a con, asking her to swap bank notes, in the hope of confusing
:09:56. > :10:00.her and keeping some of the shop's cash. But they give up when she
:10:01. > :10:05.tells them she does not have a ?20 notes. These guys are not beaten.
:10:06. > :10:10.One hovers around the counter while another goes to get a coffee, or
:10:11. > :10:13.does he? He tells the staff member the machine is not working. While
:10:14. > :10:20.she goes to help him, quick as a flash, his Powell reaches over the
:10:21. > :10:37.counter and grabs ?110 and some blank betting slips. Why not have a
:10:38. > :10:42.punt on naming this pair? We are with the Met police dive
:10:43. > :10:48.team. You have got a training exercise. What would happen here? We
:10:49. > :10:56.are going to introduce a gun into the dock. The diver will go in and
:10:57. > :10:59.use a search pattern to find it. The gun will go in and we can get the
:11:00. > :11:04.training exercise under way. Tell us about the role of the team. The
:11:05. > :11:10.team. No our job is to locate any evidence that the enquiry teams are
:11:11. > :11:15.looking for. We will go to any waterways in the London area and try
:11:16. > :11:21.and locate it. You have got a lot of kit. Talk us through what we have
:11:22. > :11:27.here. It is really interesting to see all of this. We do the majority
:11:28. > :11:33.of our diving on surface supplied air. The air that is going to the
:11:34. > :11:37.diver comes from the surface. They are not breathing from air on their
:11:38. > :11:40.backs. They do have air on their backs in case there is a
:11:41. > :11:45.catastrophic failure of this but this is the safest form of diving
:11:46. > :11:50.that you can do. If the diver has any issue down there, we can keep
:11:51. > :11:54.giving him more air. So the air is going through that cord now. Very
:11:55. > :12:01.cheeky conditions down there, I imagine? Yes, he will be working
:12:02. > :12:05.with no visibility, with a foot or two feet of thick silt and all the
:12:06. > :12:10.rubbish you can think of thrown in on top of that. They've virtually
:12:11. > :12:22.cannot see in front of the hounds? They cannot see a thing, everything
:12:23. > :12:24.is done on touch. Is there any forensic value when it has been in
:12:25. > :12:28.the water? You can get DNA, fingerprints and gunshot residue.
:12:29. > :12:31.There is a very high likelihood that you could get evidence. Let's see if
:12:32. > :12:36.he finds it later? Breaking the cycle of gang crime can
:12:37. > :12:39.be a real challenge for the police, but the Met have come up with
:12:40. > :13:01.a carrot and stick approach that It is 5am. We are with the Met
:13:02. > :13:12.Police team tackling gang-related crime. They are responsible from
:13:13. > :13:16.crimes responsible for drug dealing to muggings. But the police have
:13:17. > :13:20.more than one tactic to overcome the problem. Police know that gangs
:13:21. > :13:25.often recruit their members when they are young, leaving them trapped
:13:26. > :13:30.in a criminal underworld. You have that revolving door of arrest,
:13:31. > :13:33.charge and prison and on it goes. It could be that you have found
:13:34. > :13:39.yourself in a situation that you do not want to be in. You just do not
:13:40. > :13:48.know how to get yourself out. Police are trying any message they can to
:13:49. > :13:56.break that cycle. They can give you a few pointers to give you a bigger
:13:57. > :14:07.opportunity to get a job. They are encouraging local youths to come
:14:08. > :14:11.here to a jobs fair. I want people to realise that the Met are also
:14:12. > :14:15.here to help. If that means rehousing you from your peer group
:14:16. > :14:18.or assisting you with employment training or education to get you
:14:19. > :14:24.out, we camp that you in touch with the right people to help you exit
:14:25. > :14:29.and turn your life around. But if they do not want to expect help,
:14:30. > :14:35.gang members can expect a more traditional style of policing.
:14:36. > :14:41.Police! If they continue to commit crime and
:14:42. > :14:45.pose a risk to the community then equally the Met will target them as
:14:46. > :14:50.well. These raids taking place across London on the same day as the
:14:51. > :14:55.jobs fair are targeting gangs and it does not take them long to uncover
:14:56. > :15:03.their first stash. This looks like cannabis resin and a small ball of
:15:04. > :15:09.what looks like crack cocaine. It looks about 30 pieces in there. The
:15:10. > :15:15.30 pieces probably have a street by you of ?600. It is a stark reminder
:15:16. > :15:23.of the role gangs play in London's drugs market and at other raids,
:15:24. > :15:28.offices make more seizures. We have what we believe to be uncut heroin
:15:29. > :15:32.and uncut cocaine, together with a mixing agent, roughly a street value
:15:33. > :15:44.of this, once it is cut down would be between two and ?3000. The gang
:15:45. > :15:49.members here had their chance to get out, but now they are facing jail.
:15:50. > :15:54.Police officers say they are getting results.
:15:55. > :15:57.We are having great success, gun crime and knife crime is coming
:15:58. > :16:01.down. If we can offer authentic measures that them to take a
:16:02. > :16:03.different path, hopefully, we will see more success in the future.
:16:04. > :16:05.I'm joined now by Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe,
:16:06. > :16:18.head of the Met here in London. Some of these knives have been
:16:19. > :16:20.recovered in the operations related to gang crime.
:16:21. > :16:23.head of the Met here in London. We heard in the film that
:16:24. > :16:25.gang crime is coming down. But there are still nearly 600 kids
:16:26. > :16:27.under 17-year-olds in gangs in London.
:16:28. > :16:32.You have a long way to go, don't you?
:16:33. > :16:38.It is a big issue. I said three years ago I wanted to do something
:16:39. > :16:46.about it, so we put together a team of 1200 police officers, and we are
:16:47. > :16:52.making an impact. 3500 people in gangs, that is the size of the task.
:16:53. > :16:57.We have locked up a third of them. We try to do two things, we will
:16:58. > :17:02.enforce the law if they use these weapons. If we can divert them,
:17:03. > :17:03.particularly a very young person and stop them getting involved in
:17:04. > :17:07.criminality, we will do that. don't you?
:17:08. > :17:10.You are using some softer ways of tackling gang crime, like
:17:11. > :17:13.the jobs fair we saw in the film. But many people would say that
:17:14. > :17:15.if you are involved in gang crime, you should be arrested full stop.
:17:16. > :17:24.What would you say to them? Some are already in prison which
:17:25. > :17:28.shows we are being ruthless. At the age of 1415, these kids become
:17:29. > :17:32.attracted to the fringes of these gangs. Where we identify them as
:17:33. > :17:36.being at risk, we do our best to divert them. We work with
:17:37. > :17:42.charities. It may mean moving them to different parts of London. We
:17:43. > :17:46.look at young girls who are traded round these gangs as sexual
:17:47. > :17:49.playthings, or used to carry batons because the gangs think they won't
:17:50. > :17:55.get the same sentence. That is not true. We try to target those on the
:17:56. > :18:05.fringes to avoid them getting involved.
:18:06. > :18:18.After the 2011 writes, there was a lot of thought about policing and
:18:19. > :18:23.strategies. Do Londoners want water cannon on the streets?
:18:24. > :18:35.What people want is safety. On the first night, we took an awful lot of
:18:36. > :18:43.injuries from rocks being thrown. The water cannon is used to keep
:18:44. > :18:51.people out of range. We have the possibility also of batten rounds.
:18:52. > :18:54.We have to have a spectrum of things in our armoury, this is one of them.
:18:55. > :18:57.Thank you very much. What would you say to them?
:18:58. > :19:09.Still to come on today's programme: A robber who stalked an elderly man
:19:10. > :19:12.through the streets before pouncing. He pinned my arms to my side so I
:19:13. > :19:15.could not move. Still to come on today's programme:
:19:16. > :19:21.And the police dive team reveal how they pluck evidence from the depths
:19:22. > :19:25.of London's murky waterways. Now, just a few hundred yards away
:19:26. > :19:27.from this old dock is the scene of a notorious East End murder.
:19:28. > :19:30.On Saturday the 8th of February 1997, John Kennedy was stabbed to
:19:31. > :19:33.death in the Railway Pub in Sutton Street just over there.
:19:34. > :19:37.It has become a well-known crime because John's brother, Jade Jones,
:19:38. > :19:39.was a member of the band Damage. We'll speak to Jade in a moment.
:19:40. > :19:45.But, first, here's DCI John Sandlin who is leading the investigation.
:19:46. > :19:58.Tell me what happened? John was out with his friends, there
:19:59. > :20:03.was an altercation by the pool table in the pub. He was stabbed but died
:20:04. > :20:07.if you hours later. There was a Crimewatch appeal and a note was
:20:08. > :20:13.handed into the town hall. This could be a witness who we want
:20:14. > :20:17.to speak to. And anyone else in the pub that night. There are steps I
:20:18. > :20:23.can take to ensure there is protection for witnesses.
:20:24. > :20:28.Jade, 17 years have passed. What would it mean for the family to get
:20:29. > :20:33.a result and find out who did this? It would mean the world to the
:20:34. > :20:40.family. 17 years is a long time for us to grieve. Our brother is
:20:41. > :20:45.missed. We are urging people to come forward and do the right thing, and
:20:46. > :20:48.be a witness. If you are in the pub, please come forward and say what
:20:49. > :20:54.needs to be set. This has been a long campaign. It
:20:55. > :21:00.has. Tell us about John? He was a loving father. The joker of
:21:01. > :21:06.the family. He is really missed. A charity worker. An all-round good
:21:07. > :21:10.guy. Somebody like that, to have their life taken away so young is
:21:11. > :21:16.tough for us to deal with. He is missed by all his friends.
:21:17. > :21:19.What is your message to someone out there who may know who has done
:21:20. > :21:25.this? I think there are a lot of people
:21:26. > :21:32.who do know. They can put things in place, the police can put things in
:21:33. > :21:36.place to protect them. Think of us, as a family, how we are grieving.
:21:37. > :21:42.Please come forward and say as a family, how we are grieving.
:21:43. > :21:44.Please come forward what needs to be said.
:21:45. > :21:46.Thank you for coming in to talk to us. Good luck with the
:21:47. > :21:50.investigation. There is a ?30,000 reward for an
:21:51. > :21:53.arrest and prosecution in this case. Now it's time to have a look
:21:54. > :21:56.at today's Wanted Faces. First up is this man,

:22:52. > :22:54.affray, and granted bail, He is six feet tall,

:23:26. > :23:43.at your standard message rate. Now, can you help us track
:23:44. > :23:45.down the man who brutally assaulted a teenager on her way home
:23:46. > :23:54.from a party here in the East End? Both the written and her mum has
:23:55. > :23:58.spoken to us. We have changed their names to protect their identities,
:23:59. > :24:05.and their voices are spoken by an actor.
:24:06. > :24:08.Jade had had a busy week at college and was looking forward to spending
:24:09. > :24:15.Saturday night with friends, letting her hair down.
:24:16. > :24:19.Even after college, I still revise when I get home. But, at the
:24:20. > :24:24.weekends, I just want to go out and have some fun.
:24:25. > :24:30.Because she is a good girl, I do trust her, so I do let her out. But
:24:31. > :24:33.I normally say, be in by a certain time.
:24:34. > :24:36.It was a Saturday evening. Jade and her friends were excited
:24:37. > :24:43.about a party they had heard about, and were waiting for details.
:24:44. > :24:47.You get their number from Facebook, you call them up. My friend called
:24:48. > :24:55.them, and they said it was near Canning town. So, we just went.
:24:56. > :25:00.Jade and her friends jumped on a chain. The party was being held in
:25:01. > :25:05.an industrial estate opposite the station entrance on Cody Road.
:25:06. > :25:11.When we got off the Tube, we had the music, and we could actually see
:25:12. > :25:15.it. We started getting excited. The friends had to queue before they
:25:16. > :25:20.could gain entry to the underground party. But, earlier excitement was
:25:21. > :25:25.replaced with trepidation, as Jade had attracted some unwanted
:25:26. > :25:30.attention. I felt a bit uncomfortable, because
:25:31. > :25:35.someone was staring at me. While she was standing in the queue
:25:36. > :25:39.to enter the party, she saw this man looking at her. She felt
:25:40. > :25:45.uncomfortable with it. I would tell my friend, but she
:25:46. > :25:50.said, don't worry about it. So, we went in. The friends enjoyed
:25:51. > :25:55.an evening of dancing until the early hours. At 4am in the morning,
:25:56. > :26:02.her friends were ready to head home. My two friends told me to come. I
:26:03. > :26:06.didn't want to go yet. They left me. Her decision to stay at the party
:26:07. > :26:15.would leave her alone in an unfamiliar part of London.
:26:16. > :26:18.I knew that I was at Starling, but I did not know how to get home from
:26:19. > :26:25.there. She walked out of the industrial
:26:26. > :26:26.estate, and turned right, heading towards the Docklands light
:26:27. > :26:31.Melbourne. She had a sense someone was following her.
:26:32. > :26:35.At first, I didn't think anything of it. But after he started gaining
:26:36. > :26:39.speed. She decided to cross a road in an
:26:40. > :26:43.attempt to get away from this man. Unfortunately, he also continued
:26:44. > :26:48.following her. Then, I was worried. I knew
:26:49. > :26:52.something was going to happen. Her attacker finally caught up with
:26:53. > :26:59.her. She was then subjected to a
:27:00. > :27:05.terrifying assault. We believe another man of African
:27:06. > :27:10.descent was walking past. The potential witness was talking
:27:11. > :27:14.loudly on a mobile phone, and police think it was this interruption that
:27:15. > :27:21.spooked the attacker, causing him to flee.
:27:22. > :27:26.I still felt scared. I was still crying. I was emotional.
:27:27. > :27:30.It was the early hours of the morning before Jade made her way to
:27:31. > :27:35.a phone box near Canning Town bus station. In a state of shock, she
:27:36. > :27:39.called for help. When I heard from the place what
:27:40. > :27:45.happened, I got upset. I started crying. In an instant, I stopped
:27:46. > :27:48.crying and thought, I had to be there for my daughter.
:27:49. > :27:55.What happened to Jade was every parent's worst nightmare.
:27:56. > :28:02.At first, I didn't go to college for a week, I didn't even want to leave
:28:03. > :28:07.my house. But I had to go. Jade, before, was bubbly, laid-back,
:28:08. > :28:10.always laughing and smiling. Afterwards, she would not go
:28:11. > :28:14.outside. If she did want to go somewhere, she would ask me to go
:28:15. > :28:19.with her. I don't really go to parties
:28:20. > :28:23.anymore. Because I am scared it is going to happen again.
:28:24. > :28:26.We believe the man staring at the queue for her to get into the party
:28:27. > :28:30.was the man who followed her and attacked her.
:28:31. > :28:34.I think, the hardest part is knowing that he is still out there.
:28:35. > :28:36.from a party here in the East End? Detective Chief Inspector Simon
:28:37. > :28:37.Moring has been investigating this disturbing case.
:28:38. > :28:43.And Simon, I think you have one big clue.
:28:44. > :28:47.The man had a very distinctive tattoo on his face.
:28:48. > :28:49.We have tried to recreate it here. From the victim's description,
:28:50. > :28:52.it is a skull and crossbones tattoo, and it is just
:28:53. > :29:00.below the man's right eye. What else do we know about the man?
:29:01. > :29:02.He was black, with dark skin. Not massively tall,
:29:03. > :29:05.but certainly taller than the victim who is five foot three inches tall.
:29:06. > :29:08.We believe that, on the night of that party on Cody Road,
:29:09. > :29:11.on November 30 last year, he was wearing a blue Nike tracksuit.
:29:12. > :29:19.Do you think he was from further afield? We think people attending
:29:20. > :29:22.would have been drawn from a large catchment area.
:29:23. > :29:24.wearing a blue Nike tracksuit. Now it's time
:29:25. > :29:26.for our second round-up of criminals caught on camera.
:29:27. > :29:33.And, just so you know, the first one is pretty nasty.
:29:34. > :29:40.We are outside a pub in the Brent area of London, and these men are
:29:41. > :29:46.having a bright con slab. The skinny guy looks properly wound up, and
:29:47. > :29:49.appears to act out an attack, making punching and striking motions. His
:29:50. > :29:54.stocky part isn't bothered, and keeps appearing in to the pub. They
:29:55. > :30:00.split up, and the big guy comes back out soon after. This time, he is
:30:01. > :30:04.with someone else. But things take a sinister turn when the skinny man
:30:05. > :30:08.puts on workman's gloves and walks back to them holding a hammer behind
:30:09. > :30:12.his back. Police think he gets it from a nearby van. He marches
:30:13. > :30:17.towards the man and clubs him in the head with a hammer, falling in the
:30:18. > :30:22.process. The victim staggers back and it struck again. A car passes
:30:23. > :30:26.between them, giving the victim a chance to escape. He flees and is
:30:27. > :30:30.followed down the road by the two men where police say he is beaten
:30:31. > :30:34.again. This appalling attack happened in a busy street and would
:30:35. > :30:36.have been witnessed by many people. Were you one of them? We need your
:30:37. > :30:51.help now. into a south London petrol station
:30:52. > :30:57.and decides he wants to fill up on money. He lunges over-the-counter
:30:58. > :31:03.and takes around 100 quid for the till. Let's see it again. The camera
:31:04. > :31:09.gets a good view of him before he walks through the door and grabs the
:31:10. > :31:27.cash. Reckon you can identify him? What are you waiting for?
:31:28. > :31:35.Next, DC Elaine Dodd needs your help in catching someone who has attacked
:31:36. > :31:40.a man seemingly just for being gay. He has gone out of the club and
:31:41. > :31:48.attacked a gay man. He he was left with a broken nose, a broken eye
:31:49. > :31:52.socket which on the brain. Where did this happen? It occurred in
:31:53. > :31:59.Birmingham city centre. The club is on Hurst Street. We have got some
:32:00. > :32:05.CCTV of the person you really want to identify. Talk me through this.
:32:06. > :32:14.It is this man coming on to the left of the screen. A white male in his
:32:15. > :32:18.20s, with dark hair, a T-shirt, a dark jacket and a pair of jeans with
:32:19. > :32:22.a white the on the back. That is very distinctive. Someone will have
:32:23. > :32:28.a look at those jeans and recognise those or the person as a whole. We
:32:29. > :32:33.need as many names as possible for who this person might be. The victim
:32:34. > :32:40.has not just had physical injuries, has he? It has affected him mentally
:32:41. > :32:45.and psychologically. He has lost his confidence, he suffers anxiety. He
:32:46. > :32:52.cannot stay in his own property. It is a nasty hate crime. That is how
:32:53. > :32:59.you are treating this? It is a homophobic hate crime. We clearly
:33:00. > :33:02.need to find this guy. If you recognise him, please do get in
:33:03. > :33:07.touch? The numbers or on your screen now.
:33:08. > :33:13.Our next case involves calculating thief who robbed an elderly victim
:33:14. > :33:19.when he arrived home at his sheltered housing.
:33:20. > :33:26.A is just a number for 90 rods one Lord. He enjoys living life to the
:33:27. > :33:32.full. In the morning I might do a little bit of shopping. In the
:33:33. > :33:38.afternoon I meet a lady friend and dance for a couple of hours. That is
:33:39. > :33:43.my day. On the morning of April the 1st, Ronald headed out from his car
:33:44. > :33:52.home on Green man lain down to Ealing Broadway. I crossed the road.
:33:53. > :33:57.I went to the cash machine and took ?200 out. Ronald is pretty active
:33:58. > :34:04.but he does not get out and about as quickly as he once did. With my
:34:05. > :34:11.three wheeled walker, I do not walk for a fast. I'd walk half the speed
:34:12. > :34:18.of a normal person! -- I do not walk very fast. Waddled was on his way to
:34:19. > :34:29.a nearby supermarket but he was not on his own. -- Ronald was on his way
:34:30. > :34:32.to a nearby supermarket. A man was tracking his movements. The first
:34:33. > :34:38.time we see this man is on camera when one Lord and this man enter
:34:39. > :34:45.Sainsbury's. He headed down the street just biding his time. I did
:34:46. > :34:58.my shopping. I had my shopping bags on the handle of the trolley. One
:34:59. > :35:04.Lord -- Ronald's route home makes him go towards the pedestrian
:35:05. > :35:13.crossing. He went straight past the suspicious man. He then turns the
:35:14. > :35:24.corner. And then this man also turns this corner and walks in the same
:35:25. > :35:28.direction behind him. He knows where Ronald is going. He has walked ahead
:35:29. > :35:36.of Ronald and then he is waiting for him again. As Ronald reached his
:35:37. > :35:44.care home, the man opened the door for him and then made his move.
:35:45. > :35:52.Somebody came from behind me, put their arm around me and pinned my
:35:53. > :35:58.arm to the side so I cannot move. I nearly lost my balance. I thought it
:35:59. > :36:03.was just someone drunk. He was only there for a couple of minutes and
:36:04. > :36:10.then he walked past. As I came in I saw my wallet had gone. The mother
:36:11. > :36:16.made off with around ?90 in cash as well as Ronald's credit cards. I
:36:17. > :36:20.ended up changing my credit card and the PIN number. This is a robbery
:36:21. > :36:28.which happened in London in the middle of the day and it is
:36:29. > :36:31.something that I as a police officer take very seriously. I do not want
:36:32. > :36:34.other people who are not quite as tough as Ronald to deal with this. I
:36:35. > :36:42.want to stop him from doing this to me again and anybody else.
:36:43. > :36:48.DC Matt Spring who we saw the film joins me now. It is pretty shocking
:36:49. > :36:52.this one? Yes, it is a shocking incident. It is an attack in the
:36:53. > :36:57.middle of the day on a vulnerable man. He is walking towards his
:36:58. > :37:02.sheltered accommodation and using his walking frame. That makes him a
:37:03. > :37:07.target as a vulnerable person. A terrible thing to have happened and
:37:08. > :37:14.then after the attack he withdrew money. We think the man who robbed
:37:15. > :37:18.him has seen Ronald use the PIN number and made a note of it. He has
:37:19. > :37:25.gone to a bank and taken out ?1000 and then to a cashpoint and taken
:37:26. > :37:35.out another ?3000. You have got some CCTV? No the is of good quality. He
:37:36. > :37:40.is a man wearing a distinctive grey blue jumper. He is wearing dark
:37:41. > :37:46.trousers and lighter coloured trainers. I would like to know who
:37:47. > :37:47.he is. You really want to catch this man before he strikes on the
:37:48. > :37:52.vulnerable again. Could you bring yourself to sit
:37:53. > :37:55.face-to-face with a person who had That's exactly what Restorative
:37:56. > :37:58.Justice Schemes aim to do. Sue Frame is from the
:37:59. > :38:19.Probation Service This brings an offender and a victim
:38:20. > :38:23.into communication. This can be face-to-face, as close as we are
:38:24. > :38:30.now. That must be a pretty scary prospect for the victims. It is a
:38:31. > :38:36.scary prospect. The victims are nervous because they are victims of
:38:37. > :38:40.terrible crimes. They are supported throughout the process. It is a
:38:41. > :38:46.voluntary process so they can pull out at any stage but I have not had
:38:47. > :38:51.a victim who has done this yet. We can hear from one victim. Mrs Helen
:38:52. > :38:58.Smith from South Wales. She decided to meet the man who burgled her
:38:59. > :39:04.house. I cannot replace a ring my mother bought for me. It is
:39:05. > :39:10.irreplaceable. I want to put a face to the name, I wanted to know who
:39:11. > :39:18.broke into my house. I think he was genuine that he really wanted to try
:39:19. > :39:25.and get his life on track. Now, it is my face he's going to see. It is
:39:26. > :39:29.not a victor many more, it is a person. Helen found it very
:39:30. > :39:34.worthwhile and she also hopes it stops the offender reoffending and
:39:35. > :39:43.that is another point of the scheme, isn't it? Yes, the offender also
:39:44. > :39:48.benefits. It gives them a sense of doing the right things so it
:39:49. > :39:51.increases their sense of self-worth which motivates them to change which
:39:52. > :39:57.makes it less likely that they will go on to offend. Hopefully when they
:39:58. > :40:01.see the victim and they see how much hurt and upset they have caused will
:40:02. > :40:08.get to them and that will stop them reoffending? Exactly because victims
:40:09. > :40:13.are often faceless when an offender commits a crime. Restorative justice
:40:14. > :40:18.brings that to the forefront. It is early days but we hope it will be a
:40:19. > :40:31.great success. Thank you for joining us.
:40:32. > :40:35.Sian. Earlier, we saw the Met Police dive team trying to retrieve a
:40:36. > :40:40.weapon from the murky waters of the Thames. Stewart, how have you got
:40:41. > :40:49.on? No he went to find the weapon. We can see him coming up now. There
:40:50. > :40:55.is the diver. That cable you were talking to me about. The gun has
:40:56. > :41:00.come out of the water. If you were going to use it for evidence, what
:41:01. > :41:06.would happen to it then? We would hand it to detectives or scenes of
:41:07. > :41:14.crimes officers and they would take it away to do forensic examinations
:41:15. > :41:18.on the weapon. Very challenging conditions in these waterways and
:41:19. > :41:21.many different types of waterways in London. What are some of the
:41:22. > :41:29.challenges you have been up against and you have had to respond to? We
:41:30. > :41:34.respond to all sorts of incidents from missing persons to murders and
:41:35. > :41:37.assaults. Our biggest challenges are no visibility and the rubbish that
:41:38. > :41:44.is in there and the fact the diver cannot see anything in front of him.
:41:45. > :41:48.He is doing everything by touch. He uses a search pattern using a
:41:49. > :41:54.weighted line on the bottom of the water. He will be using one hand on
:41:55. > :42:03.the weighted line and the other. He will lift the weight, move it a
:42:04. > :42:07.metre and work back. The area is covered at least twice. It is a slow
:42:08. > :42:12.process but very thorough. It is like a fingerprint search
:42:13. > :42:17.underwater. A quick update for you now. Some
:42:18. > :42:24.information coming on the gold pen which was stolen from Peter Kershaw
:42:25. > :42:30.in the attack in Hornchurch. Also a woman was tricked into parting with
:42:31. > :42:37.800 pounds of euros. We have strong leads on that case. And two men who
:42:38. > :42:44.were posing as gardeners stole money from a pension's home. Sian, where
:42:45. > :42:49.will you be tomorrow? Tomorrow we are going from dive into driving. We
:42:50. > :42:54.will be at the Met's driving school at Hendon. I have had a go. I have
:42:55. > :42:59.been doing some pretty radical manoeuvres. You can see how I get
:43:00. > :43:04.on. We will have the police officers doing some impressive tricks live on
:43:05. > :43:10.air. I will look forward to that. To have another look at today's CCTV,
:43:11. > :43:20.head to the website. Finally, I will leave you with today's Wanted Faces.
:43:21. > :43:26.If you can find any of them, get in touch. Until tomorrow, take care.
