:00:14. > :00:19.waiting for your call. We need your help to get criminals bang to

:00:20. > :00:27.rights. Today, a top of the range car stolen from right under the

:00:28. > :00:35.owner's knows. It was a lovely car. And move over, Lewis Hamilton.

:00:36. > :00:44.The Met's top driving instructor puts Sian through her paces. Too

:00:45. > :00:50.slow on the turn. You got it round. You are watching Crimewatch roved

:00:51. > :01:08.show -- you are watching Crimewatch road show.

:01:09. > :01:16.Hello and welcome. Coming up on today's programme: A wife trapped in

:01:17. > :01:23.a hallway hoping for her husband's aid. I hoped he would come down when

:01:24. > :01:29.he heard muffled screaming. And a cashpoint con carried out at the

:01:30. > :01:36.expense of a former priest. I thought I was a wise old owl that

:01:37. > :01:41.this could not happen to. Sian is that the police College in Hendon at

:01:42. > :01:48.their driving school. Good morning. Today, I will be

:01:49. > :01:57.finding out how to avoid car scams and learning about expert driving.

:01:58. > :02:03.Take it away, Jim. Amazing! Show-off!

:02:04. > :02:07.The Internet is the go to place when it comes to buying and selling cars

:02:08. > :02:11.these days, but whenever there are large sums of money changing hands,

:02:12. > :02:17.there are conmen. Can you help us catch this one?

:02:18. > :02:26.I thought it was a little joke. Then I knew it was a reality. He is never

:02:27. > :02:31.going to come back. I would be surprised if this was the first time

:02:32. > :02:41.the suspect has used that method of stealing vehicles. This man loves

:02:42. > :02:56.his motors. I am a fan of BMWs. They are very good cars. Sadly, the time

:02:57. > :03:04.had come to say goodbye to his car. We had a baby. The car only had four

:03:05. > :03:10.seats and we needed a family car. Like thousands of other people,

:03:11. > :03:15.Serhiy decided to sell his car online. He used Autotrader via the

:03:16. > :03:22.Internet. People contact you directly to come and view the

:03:23. > :03:29.vehicle. I had some interest but not much. On the 17th of January last

:03:30. > :03:35.year, when a prospective buyer got in touch, he was feeling hopeful. He

:03:36. > :03:40.was interested in the car to come over and have a look at it. We

:03:41. > :03:46.arranged the meeting. I was really happy, yes. The man who got in touch

:03:47. > :03:53.arrived at Serhiy's home a couple of hours later. To be honest, the

:03:54. > :03:58.person looked very promising and I had noses missions at all. He was

:03:59. > :04:05.asking all the right questions, making all the right noises. He

:04:06. > :04:11.asked where we had bought it, whether we had insurance, a mobile

:04:12. > :04:18.tracking device and an alarm. He asked why we were selling it. I

:04:19. > :04:23.explained we had a baby. He looked very convincing. Serhiy began to

:04:24. > :04:28.feel confident about making a sale. He admitted that the tracking device

:04:29. > :04:35.had not been activated and forgot to make a few basic checks. I did not

:04:36. > :04:38.even ask him for his driving licence which was very unusual. There are

:04:39. > :04:46.certain things you can put in place to safeguard how you sell the

:04:47. > :04:50.vehicle. Genuine people wanting to purchase the car will not have a

:04:51. > :05:00.problem in showing identification. Having gained Serhiy's trust, it was

:05:01. > :05:03.time for a test drive. Before long, Serhiy had pulled into a lay-by so

:05:04. > :05:11.the buyer could switch places and take over the wheel. I came out and

:05:12. > :05:17.he was going round the car, round the back. He bent down to listen to

:05:18. > :05:24.the sound of the exhaust. He said, there is a popping sound from the

:05:25. > :05:28.exhaust. I came to have a listen. But ten three macro had fallen into

:05:29. > :05:32.this trickster's trap. Having reassured him that the engine was

:05:33. > :05:38.found, he went to jump into the passenger seat, but before he made

:05:39. > :05:46.it to the door, the car sped away. Maybe a little bit naive, I did not

:05:47. > :05:50.know what was going on. I thought it was a little joke but I knew it was

:05:51. > :05:59.a reality. He is never going to come back. Serhiy was left stranded

:06:00. > :06:03.because his mobile phone was in the car but luckily, he was able to flag

:06:04. > :06:09.down a passing taxi and call the police. I never thought this would

:06:10. > :06:18.happen. It was a silly mistake. But a costly one. Ten three macro's

:06:19. > :06:29.insurers refused to pay, leaving him ?20,000 out of pocket -- Serhiy's

:06:30. > :06:38.insurers refused to pay. I did not have much income. It was pretty bad.

:06:39. > :06:43.I loved it! It was a lovely car. If you recognise that man, give us a

:06:44. > :06:48.call on the usual numbers. If you do not know him, take a look at these

:06:49. > :06:52.other crooks captured on CCTV. Just a warning, some of them are bit

:06:53. > :06:58.nasty. It is late at night and someone is

:06:59. > :07:02.lurking outside this McDonald's restaurant near Peterborough.

:07:03. > :07:06.Dressed in a disguise, he's not planning on having the usual sort of

:07:07. > :07:11.takeaway. In fact, he's part of a criminal gang and he has got the

:07:12. > :07:15.place under surveillance. He waits until the restaurant closes and then

:07:16. > :07:20.he and two other men forced their way inside and overpower a member of

:07:21. > :07:26.staff. They march the employees through the kitchen where one

:07:27. > :07:31.brandishes a meat cleaver. Cornering the staff in a small cashier's

:07:32. > :07:36.office, one robber steals ?800. Police say the rest of the money was

:07:37. > :07:44.in a time locked safe which the men could not get out. They left in a 51

:07:45. > :07:47.plate Boxall this era which belonged to a staff member and was later

:07:48. > :07:58.found abandoned in old Linton Road in Clinton. -- Clinton.

:07:59. > :08:05.You have heard of a smash and grab. This man has his own version in a

:08:06. > :08:08.Richmond shop. He hammers the counter while demanding cash and

:08:09. > :08:13.cigarettes. The terrified shopkeeper throws money at him but the robber

:08:14. > :08:19.wants more. He leans over and helps himself to the till drawer. He takes

:08:20. > :08:21.almost 80 quid and ?50 worth of tobacco. Tell us who this hammer

:08:22. > :08:35.wielding Houdini is. -- we are in Sparkbrook in Birmingham.

:08:36. > :08:43.Two men are lurking below some flats. A woman with dementia is

:08:44. > :08:48.upstairs. The man comes down the stairs, talking to someone on the

:08:49. > :08:52.phone, perhaps the third man who soon joins them. One of the three

:08:53. > :08:58.appears to be holding a hammer as he goes back upstairs. Police say the

:08:59. > :09:07.woman's son and daughter-in-law hear the woman's screams from a ground

:09:08. > :09:12.floor flat. As the men scarper, one threatens the shopkeeper with the

:09:13. > :09:19.hammer who throws a chair back at him. These men invaded the home of a

:09:20. > :09:22.vulnerable woman and need to be caught.

:09:23. > :09:25.Call us now. The car chase sequences in dramas from the Sweeney and the

:09:26. > :09:30.Italian Job are often the bit we enjoy watching the most. Here at the

:09:31. > :09:34.Met, the drivers get to do some extreme driving for real. They have

:09:35. > :09:39.agreed to show me some of the more advanced moves.

:09:40. > :09:44.Driving a police car through traffic with sirens blaring may look like

:09:45. > :09:52.great fun. In fact, it is a very serious and skilled job. Not just

:09:53. > :09:56.anyone can do it. For the past 80 years, police officers have come to

:09:57. > :10:02.this driving school to learn how to cut through the traffic without

:10:03. > :10:06.causing accidents. Today, I am with one of the Met's

:10:07. > :10:18.most experienced driving instructors. He is going to put me

:10:19. > :10:26.through my paces. If I needed to do fast response drive myself, what

:10:27. > :10:31.skills would I need? It is about planning. We tried to use our skills

:10:32. > :10:36.for what we think might happen and start planning nice and early. All

:10:37. > :10:44.of this is about one key thing, driving safely. What sort of speed

:10:45. > :10:51.are we at now? We are travelling at 110 mph now. There are certain calls

:10:52. > :10:54.we go to which are important to get too quickly but if you drive too

:10:55. > :11:02.fast and have a collision, you will not get there at all. Safety is the

:11:03. > :11:09.prime objective. I am just sucking my stomach in now. I have just had

:11:10. > :11:15.the car cleaned! Now Jim is taking me to Bovingdon airfield. This is

:11:16. > :11:19.where drivers get training for situations like terrorist incidents

:11:20. > :11:25.and riots. I think it is safe enough here for me to have a go as well.

:11:26. > :11:29.I'm going to show you some techniques we use for anti-hijack

:11:30. > :11:39.driver training. What does it involve? I will take you forwards

:11:40. > :11:41.and backwards. We have a car here which I don't mind if you damage.

:11:42. > :12:04.OK! Here we go them. Jim is making this look really easy.

:12:05. > :12:12.Now in reverse. I am holding on to my seat! Identical look! I had

:12:13. > :12:25.better not close my eyes when I do it! Now it is my turn in the hot

:12:26. > :12:35.seat. Are you ready for this? Lets get in the right direction. That is

:12:36. > :12:46.a good start! You have knocked one, now two. Now backwards, go for it.

:12:47. > :12:59.The cones, where are they? I cannot do this in reverse! I think you are

:13:00. > :13:04.making up your own course! I have lost the plot here! I had better

:13:05. > :13:12.find it fast as we are about to step it up a gear with AJ turn. It is a

:13:13. > :13:18.move straight out of James Bond, used as an anti-Jack measure. --

:13:19. > :13:35.anti-Jack measure. How was that for you? You obviously

:13:36. > :13:43.know what you're doing. This is about as much fun as you can have in

:13:44. > :13:57.the car, apparently. Throw it the other way! Not bad at all! Practice

:13:58. > :14:00.makes perfect. Time for one more go. Right hand over. Action drive. Throw

:14:01. > :14:23.it the other way! Too slow on the turn! You got it

:14:24. > :14:27.round. I do feel sick. Well done. That really was quite a challenge.

:14:28. > :14:33.It was an amazing experience. Remember those Minis from the

:14:34. > :14:36.Italian Job? Very cute but they can do fantastic tricks. The Hollywood

:14:37. > :14:41.film industry has not fallen out of love with them. Anthony Hines is a

:14:42. > :14:46.writer and producer and I am told your passion for Minis is second

:14:47. > :14:49.only to your passion for the movies is that probably the other way

:14:50. > :14:57.round. Work sometimes gets in the way of Minis! Unfortunately, your

:14:58. > :15:02.Mini was stolen. Tell us what happened. It was stolen from central

:15:03. > :15:14.London, Islington, on the 19th of May this year, probably around 3pm

:15:15. > :15:22.in quite an upmarket part of town. Overstating for you, I know. It is

:15:23. > :15:26.not the same Mini here, I know. It was Cooper three S, this one has a

:15:27. > :15:33.sunroof, and why doesn't. It is such a cute car. What about the back,

:15:34. > :15:39.does that give us any clues? Another way of telling this apart from the

:15:40. > :15:49.standard minicar, it has filler caps on the right and left. Anything else

:15:50. > :15:51.distinctive? Want more detail is that the wheels have holes drilled

:15:52. > :15:57.in them, where as a normal Mini doesn't. We hope we can find the car

:15:58. > :16:01.for you because we know it is a huge loss. Let's talk to the officer

:16:02. > :16:05.investigating the case, Simon Whitbread. Tell us what you are

:16:06. > :16:10.doing to find his car, because there is a description of the man we want

:16:11. > :16:14.to get out there. We know on the day in question that the car was seen

:16:15. > :16:21.driving erratically by a white male aged between 35 to 45. We have

:16:22. > :16:25.trawled the CCTV and we want to take other enquiries and we are going

:16:26. > :16:29.through social media as a last push. We will really help with the push.

:16:30. > :16:35.Show if this registration plate. This is the number. On the Mini it

:16:36. > :16:39.would have been reversed, a black background with white lettering

:16:40. > :16:42.because it is a classic car. That is something you want people to look

:16:43. > :16:46.out for. I would quickly like some advice for people out there who have

:16:47. > :16:50.these classic cars that mean so much. How can they protect them?

:16:51. > :16:56.They are a magnet for thieves. Park it securely if you can, put a wheel

:16:57. > :16:57.lock on it to make it as difficult as possible for thieves. Good advice

:16:58. > :17:01.there. If you haven't got an eye for cars,

:17:02. > :17:06.maybe you can help us find this lot. He's been wanted for questioning

:17:07. > :17:09.by detectives from Police Scotland since June 2007

:17:10. > :17:11.in connection with the death The 50 year old is five feet 2

:17:12. > :17:16.inches tall with receding hair. He has tattoos of a heart, an arrow

:17:17. > :17:20.and a dagger on his left arm. Part of Ferguson's left

:17:21. > :17:22.ear is also missing. Police say he is dangerous

:17:23. > :17:40.and should not be approached, just This man might be using a different

:17:41. > :17:43.name. Detectives in Avon and Somerset want to question him in

:17:44. > :17:44.connection with a serious sexual assault on a woman.

:17:45. > :17:47.He has links to the Easton area of Bristol and London,

:17:48. > :17:56.This man is wanted for questioning by officers in connection with a

:17:57. > :17:58.robbery where a couple were threatened in the home and

:17:59. > :18:01.high-value items were stolen. The 34 year old has links to Preston

:18:02. > :18:04.and Manchester and is described And finally today, this man Kevin

:18:05. > :18:22.Charles Schruyers. He is known to been living in the Aberdeen area

:18:23. > :18:26.but he also has links to Liverpool. If you recognise any of these men

:18:27. > :18:29.make sure you pick up the phone. You can call us on 08000 468999

:18:30. > :18:32.Calls are free from most landlines. Some network and mobile operators

:18:33. > :18:35.will charge for these calls. Text CW,

:18:36. > :18:38.space and then your message. And that space is really important -

:18:39. > :18:42.if you don't put it in your message Texts will be charged

:18:43. > :18:58.at your standard message rate. Earlier we heard about a man whose

:18:59. > :19:02.sports car was stolen when he tried to sell it online, but there are

:19:03. > :19:08.plenty of scams as well attracting those buyers, and Jerry Bull can

:19:09. > :19:22.tell us about one. This was in Northern Ireland and ?3000 was lost.

:19:23. > :19:25.Gerri Bullock. He contacted a man by e-mail and made arrangements to

:19:26. > :19:29.purchase the vehicle. Little did he know at the time that the advert was

:19:30. > :19:36.fake and had been copied from a genuine advert. So he handed over

:19:37. > :19:40.the cash? He did. They communicated via e-mail on a number of occasions

:19:41. > :19:45.and arrangements were made him to transfer the money into a bank

:19:46. > :19:50.account and he did so. There is CCTV footage, because he did not vanish

:19:51. > :19:58.into thin air. No, he didn't. You can see he walks into the bank and

:19:59. > :20:05.that he withdraws the cash. We believe he is Eastern European and

:20:06. > :20:08.he has been using a fake name. Auto Trader tell as they do work with the

:20:09. > :20:12.police and other authorities to try to combat this type of crime. I know

:20:13. > :20:21.Brad Wilding has someone in the studio together some advice. -- Rav.

:20:22. > :20:25.I guess the first point you will make is not just trust the photos

:20:26. > :20:30.you've seen online. Absolutely. You need to make sure the car exists, it

:20:31. > :20:35.belongs to the person selling it and it comes up to the description in

:20:36. > :20:39.the advert. Why is where the car is so important? If somebody offers to

:20:40. > :20:44.meet in the station car park, don't do that. Insist on meeting them at

:20:45. > :20:50.the address where the car is registered. That is found on the

:20:51. > :20:53.vehicle logbook. There are a couple of documents we will mention. This

:20:54. > :20:58.is the logbook, and what is important about it? Before you even

:20:59. > :21:13.look at the car, check the paperwork. Look at the paperwork in

:21:14. > :21:17.the logbook and the VIN number is what uni will find on the engine.

:21:18. > :21:23.That proves it is legitimate. That should be the same as the V5? It

:21:24. > :21:29.will also be on the MOT certificate, and that is really useful, because

:21:30. > :21:33.if you go to their website, you can check the entire MOT history

:21:34. > :21:36.including the mileage recorded every time the car was submitted for an

:21:37. > :21:41.MOT so you can make sure it has not been clocked. What about trades men

:21:42. > :21:45.posing as private sellers? Whenever you ring up, ask about the car. If

:21:46. > :21:47.somebody says which car are you talking about, put the phone down

:21:48. > :21:56.and walk away, because they are Trader. Trader men are subject to

:21:57. > :21:59.consumer law. If you buy a car from a private individual you have little

:22:00. > :22:02.protection, and they know that, so if they are posing as a private

:22:03. > :22:08.seller, they're doing something suspicious, so walk away. What about

:22:09. > :22:12.physically paying for the vehicle? The safest way is a bank transfer.

:22:13. > :22:16.You've established that the person has a right to sell it and you can

:22:17. > :22:27.do more than check the logbook. It says that it's not a tradesman. It

:22:28. > :22:33.establishes they have the right to sell, Astro bank transfer, and try

:22:34. > :22:37.and avoid carrying several thousand pounds in cash. If they insist on

:22:38. > :22:42.cash, take someone with you and get something in writing that says you

:22:43. > :22:47.have paid -- ask for a bank transfer. Great advice. Still to

:22:48. > :22:52.come today. The sneaky thieves who dropped ten on the floor steal

:22:53. > :22:55.hundreds more. He was insistent that it was mine. I said no, I didn't

:22:56. > :23:01.drop it, because I didn't have any money. And the doorstep robbers who

:23:02. > :23:08.wore diamond rings from their victim's fingers. By the way he held

:23:09. > :23:13.me there was nothing I could do. Now, later we will be seeing the

:23:14. > :23:18.police smash through a roadblock. Not only do they practice their

:23:19. > :23:22.driving skills here, the site is also a collection -- the home of a

:23:23. > :23:29.collection of classic cars. Let's start with this old one. It is a

:23:30. > :23:33.beauty, Richard. This is a 1948 commissioners car, and it seemed

:23:34. > :23:38.such events like the coronation of the Queen and the recent diamond

:23:39. > :23:42.jubilee. So loads of history. Let's look inside the car. It is pretty

:23:43. > :23:47.plush and luxurious. You've done a fantastic job of restoring the star.

:23:48. > :23:53.When we look inside it, it doesn't really look like a police car --

:23:54. > :23:58.restoring this car. It has got basic warning equipment, and I think you

:23:59. > :24:01.know where the button is. Yes, I've been practising. Fantastic. That has

:24:02. > :24:05.been the highlight for me. Let's talk about this one down here, the

:24:06. > :24:12.motorbike, which looks like something straight out of Heartbeat.

:24:13. > :24:15.This is the late 40s novella set motorcycle and these were in service

:24:16. > :24:20.until the 70s. It was commonly known as the noddy bike. When officers

:24:21. > :24:27.were on foot patrol they had to salute ranks above them, so they had

:24:28. > :24:33.to just nod to acknowledge the senior officers. Everything has a

:24:34. > :24:36.story. Let's look at this one. The Austin, people will remember this

:24:37. > :24:44.one. It does look like a police car, doesn't it? It does. This is the

:24:45. > :24:47.Austin 1100, which was a panda car. It has no warming equipment and

:24:48. > :24:52.would be used to report burglaries and thefts. -- warning. A very dated

:24:53. > :24:57.radio, but that would have been used to communicate with station. Let's

:24:58. > :25:00.have a look at the radio in there hand-held device. What about this

:25:01. > :25:09.one behind us? I guess a lot of people will remember this. 1980s?

:25:10. > :25:13.This is a 1983 Rover. This would have been used to patrol the

:25:14. > :25:17.motorways around the capital. Inside, looking at some of the

:25:18. > :25:22.equipment, that you dial, the speedometer, what was that used for?

:25:23. > :25:26.We did not have video technology then so we could not film people

:25:27. > :25:30.speeding. So that is a calibrated speedometer used to measure speed

:25:31. > :25:34.over certain distances and the officers could write their notes

:25:35. > :25:39.based on that. Thanks so much for showing me that. Next, police want

:25:40. > :25:46.your help to track down a pair of doorstep robbers who made off with

:25:47. > :25:50.?20,000 worth of diamond rings. It's about the last thing you would ever

:25:51. > :25:55.imagine. I thought that this was somebody doing a joke. I couldn't

:25:56. > :26:02.believe it. It changes your whole view of life.

:26:03. > :26:10.It was the afternoon of Friday the 8th of November when Vicky Chadwick

:26:11. > :26:14.returns to her home in Battersea. I had driven to the country and I only

:26:15. > :26:18.got back at about 4pm in the afternoon. Her husband Tim had made

:26:19. > :26:24.it home early, so the couple decided to head out to the cinema for the

:26:25. > :26:31.evening. We were just going out to the film, at about 5:30 p.m., the

:26:32. > :26:35.bell rang. I ran down the stairs. On the way, Tim said, shall I open the

:26:36. > :26:47.door? I said, no, don't worry, I'll go. As I opened the latch, the door

:26:48. > :26:51.was open. And this very large man grabbed me, and then his other hand

:26:52. > :26:57.was over my mouth. I could not screen properly. -- screen

:26:58. > :27:03.properly. Her husband was oblivious to the horror unfolding downstairs.

:27:04. > :27:12.The man behind me just kept saying, take your rings off, take your rings

:27:13. > :27:16.off. So I actually took of -- took one off and gave in. By the way he

:27:17. > :27:22.held me, there was absolutely nothing I could do. I knew that Tim

:27:23. > :27:26.was upstairs, so I was hoping that he would come down when he heard

:27:27. > :27:32.this muffled screaming. And that's exactly what he did. And I looked

:27:33. > :27:37.down the landing, and Vicky was struggling with these two

:27:38. > :27:42.characters. I can see the smaller man, in his eyes, this look of

:27:43. > :27:50.shock, which I knew must be the factor that Tim was coming down the

:27:51. > :27:59.stairs. He was lucky that I ran down in my socked feet, shouting at these

:28:00. > :28:03.guys. They refuse to let big ego. One of them ran out first, and the

:28:04. > :28:07.other one was still trying to pull her out and keep her between me and

:28:08. > :28:15.them. As we went through, he hit my head against a brick wall and then

:28:16. > :28:20.he just ran. The robbers got away with Vicky's watch and several

:28:21. > :28:24.diamond rings. Tim briefly gave chase but knew he had to tend to

:28:25. > :28:29.Vicky who was left stunned and bleeding on the doorstep. Just the

:28:30. > :28:34.most horrible thing, to see your wife lying in a pool of blood on the

:28:35. > :28:41.street. Thanks to these mindless bugs. I had half a dozen stitches up

:28:42. > :28:49.there and on my eyebrow here -- mindless bugs. My hand is still

:28:50. > :28:57.pretty swollen from where he was trying to get my rings. Vicky is a

:28:58. > :29:02.very feisty, brave girl, and it has knocked the wind out of her for a

:29:03. > :29:08.while. She is still jumpy. Noises are the worst. I am really nervous

:29:09. > :29:12.of noises, unexpected noises. I was not the one that was attacked, and

:29:13. > :29:20.now I think twice before I unlock the door. It's just a sad, new

:29:21. > :29:27.chapter in our lives. I'd always thought that it seemed rude to smash

:29:28. > :29:32.open the door. -- do not open a door, but now I have learned that it

:29:33. > :29:36.is not. You just have to, unfortunately, protect yourself.

:29:37. > :29:44.This really was a frightening attack, and Jason McEvoy joins me,

:29:45. > :29:48.who is investigating the case. Jewellery stolen worth ?20,000 here.

:29:49. > :29:53.You have brought along some pictures of the rings in question. Yes, what

:29:54. > :29:59.we have is a Victorian three stone ring. It's a unique ring with old

:30:00. > :30:02.cut diamonds in it. It specifically had work done on the clawing around

:30:03. > :30:06.the diamonds to keep them in place which would make it quite

:30:07. > :30:10.distinguish to people. And obviously detail on the side as well. Yes,

:30:11. > :30:17.that would be noticeable. What about the other ring? It is a single,

:30:18. > :30:22.solitaire diamond ring with a very unusual band around the side. You

:30:23. > :30:26.can see there are diamond settings all around the band. What can you

:30:27. > :30:30.tell us about the men? We are looking for two men. The first man

:30:31. > :30:33.is a black man aged between 18 and 20 years old, about six foot three

:30:34. > :30:38.in height, a muscular build. On the day in question he was wearing black

:30:39. > :30:44.clothing, black hooded top and a dark scarf over his mouth. The

:30:45. > :30:48.second man we are looking for is a mixed-race man, approximately 16 up

:30:49. > :30:52.to 18, about five foot six, and he was wearing a navy blue anorak with

:30:53. > :31:03.the hood up and a scar across his mouth. Both of these men were

:31:04. > :31:08.speaking in a London accent. If you recognise these rings, please get in

:31:09. > :31:14.touch. Now for another disturbing crime we

:31:15. > :31:19.start in Coventry last year. Take a look at the guy in the baseball cap

:31:20. > :31:25.loitering by the cash machines. He sees a Chinese student with money to

:31:26. > :31:29.pay for his tuition. He follows the young man to Alma Street. He grabs

:31:30. > :31:35.his victim, threatens him with a knife and then throws into the floor

:31:36. > :31:42.before making his escape. Check out this photo taken by a quick thinking

:31:43. > :31:51.witness taken with his phone. Cash in one hand, nice in the other. If

:31:52. > :31:53.you know him, give us a call. Back I used a pretty blunt tactic. This

:31:54. > :32:00.next lot use far more subtle techniques.

:32:01. > :32:09.I was annoyed that it had happened to me. I thought I was a wise old

:32:10. > :32:16.owl who it could not happen too. I hope it does not happen again to me

:32:17. > :32:22.or to anyone else. On the 10th of September last year, in Blackheath

:32:23. > :32:26.south London, 83 rolled former Anglican priest James Smith was

:32:27. > :32:35.making his usual trip to the cashpoint at his usual bank. I go to

:32:36. > :32:43.the cashpoint and get about ?50 out. There was not a queue at all. I was

:32:44. > :32:51.up to the cashpoint, put my card in the machine. I felt very safe at the

:32:52. > :32:54.cashpoint. But James was not alone. Just behind him, the man in the

:32:55. > :33:00.light jacket was getting ready to con him. I put my credit card into

:33:01. > :33:06.the machine and tapped in my PIN number. You can see here that James

:33:07. > :33:13.was completely unaware that he was being spied on. Watch now is the guy

:33:14. > :33:18.in the jacket takes a good look. Once he has got the number, he nods

:33:19. > :33:27.to his mate at the left of the screen. A third man in a blue jacket

:33:28. > :33:31.acts as a lookout. Did you see that? The second man just threw something

:33:32. > :33:35.on the ground. This man suddenly appeared behind me and tapped me on

:33:36. > :33:44.the shoulder. He said, you dropped this. There was a ?10 note on the

:33:45. > :33:49.ground. Caught off-guard, James turned to speak to the man. I said,

:33:50. > :33:58.I did not drop that, I did not have any money. He said it is. He was

:33:59. > :34:04.insistent that it was mine. It is all part of the destruction. Look

:34:05. > :34:11.how quickly the first man reappears and grabs his card. A slick

:34:12. > :34:17.operation. When I looked up, I saw the card had gone. Thinking the

:34:18. > :34:23.machine was faulty, James went into the bank to ask for his card back

:34:24. > :34:31.and give the ?10 note back. The lady said to me you have been

:34:32. > :34:36.conned. We had better call the police. When James was in the bank,

:34:37. > :34:44.look who was back with his card stealing ?250 from his account. I

:34:45. > :34:57.did not believe that I could have been fooled in that way. We are all

:34:58. > :35:02.apt to be distracted. Since then, James has become more nervous about

:35:03. > :35:07.taking his money out. I have used the cashpoint since but I was

:35:08. > :35:16.careful to look around and make sure nobody was behind me. I was kind of

:35:17. > :35:21.shaken after this. At my age, you do not expect this sort of thing to

:35:22. > :35:26.happen to you. It has never happened before and I hope it never happens

:35:27. > :35:33.again. I am with DC Kevin Ricketts now. A

:35:34. > :35:41.very carefully researched scam, this one. They are standing some distance

:35:42. > :35:45.away but they can still see the PIN number. The mistake they made, well,

:35:46. > :35:52.they committed this crime writing front of the cameras. What can you

:35:53. > :35:56.tell us about the men? There are three men believed to be involved.

:35:57. > :36:00.The first person goes to the cashpoint machine, has a look at the

:36:01. > :36:08.PIN number, you can see them squatting down. The second male

:36:09. > :36:20.approaches. You can see him throw a ten month low on the floor -- a ?10

:36:21. > :36:26.note on the floor. He taps the victim on the shoulder to say he has

:36:27. > :36:32.dropped it on the ground. Then the first person elected the card from

:36:33. > :36:39.the machine. They were very smartly dressed. One male had a strong

:36:40. > :36:45.Eastern European accent. Let's hope that helps.

:36:46. > :36:50.It is not just when you are a cash machine that criminals are trying to

:36:51. > :36:57.hold off your card and pin numbers. PC Annabelle Britain is from

:36:58. > :37:06.Gloucestershire Constabulary. Tell me this trend you have found at

:37:07. > :37:11.supermarket checkouts. You will have somebody behind you in the tills.

:37:12. > :37:17.You put your PIN number in the chip and pin machine. They do not have to

:37:18. > :37:22.be standing that close to you, they can see the pattern straightaway.

:37:23. > :37:27.You go out to the car park. Another member of the gang distracts you,

:37:28. > :37:32.maybe by asking for directions or saying there is something wrong with

:37:33. > :37:36.your car. While you are doing that, another member of the gang is

:37:37. > :37:39.getting your purse out. They have got your card and your PIN number

:37:40. > :37:48.and they can go shopping. You have an example which is caught on CCTV.

:37:49. > :37:58.This is a chap who has been loitering in the till area. He is

:37:59. > :38:03.not obvious to other customers. His accomplice is asking for directions.

:38:04. > :38:09.He is a skier in the view of the boot. He has the card out, straight

:38:10. > :38:19.to the cashpoint before she has a chance to notice it is missing. --

:38:20. > :38:30.he is of skier in the view at the car. The person we saw is one of the

:38:31. > :38:35.guys we want to identify. He has a light-coloured jacket and hat. He is

:38:36. > :38:42.described as being a European gentleman with a bit of an accent.

:38:43. > :38:46.Quite tanned skin, mid-40s and medium-size and builds. The other

:38:47. > :38:55.person who was distracting the victim, have you got a description?

:38:56. > :39:01.He was smartly dressed, dark hair, glasses and he was carrying an

:39:02. > :39:06.umbrella and a briefcase. What tips can you give us to make sure we are

:39:07. > :39:12.safe? Whether you are after cashpoint or in a shop, cover your

:39:13. > :39:18.number. If anyone is standing behind you or not, whether you cover it

:39:19. > :39:24.with your wallet or your hand so no one can see you enter it. When you

:39:25. > :39:28.are outside, don't be distracted, make sure you know where your

:39:29. > :39:32.valuables are. If you are returning your trolley, make sure you know

:39:33. > :39:38.where things are. Great advice there. You do recognise this guy,

:39:39. > :39:45.you know what to do. The numbers are on screen now.

:39:46. > :39:48.Police drivers need to be ready for any eventuality and also they need

:39:49. > :39:54.to be able to drive all sorts of vehicles. This is an armoured car

:39:55. > :40:02.and a digger. They are part of the fleet at the Met. Let's have a look

:40:03. > :40:16.at this one. Pretty specialised. This is a Jankel. It has a very

:40:17. > :40:25.small window there. It is very heavily armoured. They are heavily

:40:26. > :40:32.armoured with thickened glass. Let's take a look at the back. Special

:40:33. > :40:36.features on the inside? There are four seats in the offices two years.

:40:37. > :40:39.There are portholes left and right so they go into a situation where

:40:40. > :40:44.they need to use baton guns of firearms, they can bring those down.

:40:45. > :40:51.These were used in the riots, when they? Yes, these vehicles were on

:40:52. > :40:54.the streets of Clapham. There was large-scale disorder going on and

:40:55. > :41:01.they felt in that time, this is where the vehicles needed to be to

:41:02. > :41:06.get rid of the crowd. Let's have a look at the JCB. That was an

:41:07. > :41:13.unexpected sight for me. What would this be used for? These are used in

:41:14. > :41:17.public order situations to get rid of large barricades where cars are

:41:18. > :41:22.stacked up or to get rid of debris from the roadside. They can also be

:41:23. > :41:26.used to access fortified premises like drug dens. You get a sense of

:41:27. > :41:32.how big they are when you are standing next to them. They also

:41:33. > :41:35.have specialist driving skills. Sergeant Jim Widdick was my

:41:36. > :41:43.instructor. He is about to demonstrate something. He is going

:41:44. > :41:47.to show you a couple of the tactics we deploy. He will use a reverse

:41:48. > :41:51.away from the danger and he will use a break-out. Let's see him in

:41:52. > :42:11.action. Absolutely amazing! That is what

:42:12. > :42:17.they sometimes have to do operationally.

:42:18. > :42:21.A quick update for you now. We asked for your help after a number of sex

:42:22. > :42:27.attacks on buses in the West Midlands. They have now made an

:42:28. > :42:34.arrest. Yesterday, we told you about 90-year-old won Ord Green who was

:42:35. > :42:36.mugged in the hallway of his sheltered accommodation. -- Ron

:42:37. > :42:41.Nord. We have some information about who the mugger might be. And now we

:42:42. > :42:50.have information about a mugger in Swansea. Sian, where are you heading

:42:51. > :42:54.tomorrow? Tomorrow we will be swapping the streets of London for

:42:55. > :42:58.the commuter countryside of Surrey. We will be in hot pursuit of the

:42:59. > :43:04.criminals as they tried to make their own escape from the capital.

:43:05. > :43:07.See you then, goodbye. For more details on staples that

:43:08. > :43:13.programme, head to the website. Finally, we will leave you with

:43:14. > :43:16.another look at the Wanted Faces. If you know where they are, pick up the

:43:17. > :43:24.phone. Thank you for watching, take care.
