:00:09. > :00:13.The callous robber who beat up and robbed a visually impaired man.
:00:14. > :00:18.Within seconds of that I was feeling blows to my head.
:00:19. > :00:22.And football fans are hoping for a trophy at the Euros,
:00:23. > :00:25.but this is the Jules Rimet World Cup and it's had
:00:26. > :00:56.Hello and welcome to Crimewatch Roadshow.
:00:57. > :00:59.We're live for the last time this week, tackling crimes
:01:00. > :01:08.A beloved pet dog killed and dumped in a canal.
:01:09. > :01:10.I just wanted to know the reasons why,
:01:11. > :01:17.And a savage attack on a vulnerable woman in broad daylight.
:01:18. > :01:21.He shouldn't pick on people with learning difficulties,
:01:22. > :01:26.because it's not nice to be knocked around.
:01:27. > :01:33.Today Michelle's is in her home town of Manchester.
:01:34. > :01:41.Good morning, Michelle. We are home in Manchester.
:01:42. > :01:43.Manchester is home of two of the world's biggest football
:01:44. > :01:46.teams and just behind me is the National Football Museum.
:01:47. > :01:48.Millions of people watched England play Wales in a really exciting
:01:49. > :01:51.match in the Euros yesterday and, talking of big tournaments,
:01:52. > :01:58.We'll be finding out what happened when this was stolen 50 years ago.
:01:59. > :02:13.But first, to a cowardly attack on a visually-impaired man.
:02:14. > :02:22.Les Lightfoot has lived in the Hulme area of Manchester for five years.
:02:23. > :02:29.You go to the park, which is only ten minutes away. I used to feel
:02:30. > :02:35.quite safe there. There were no cars or anything. It gives me sense of
:02:36. > :02:42.achievement to get there by myself. Over the years, Les' vision has
:02:43. > :02:49.deteriorated and he now relies on a white cane to get around. I do now
:02:50. > :02:53.have a fairly small area in my left eye where I can see quite clearly.
:02:54. > :02:58.But it does mean I have to do build a picture up of what's happening
:02:59. > :03:08.around me. The white cane looks for me as part of my visual system, if
:03:09. > :03:15.you like. I've always been very independent. I worked pretty hard at
:03:16. > :03:18.it. It was quite a struggle at times. Many times I wanted to give
:03:19. > :03:25.up on it but I have persevered with it. On the 4th of April this year,
:03:26. > :03:31.Les made the short journey to his local pharmacy. The sun came out and
:03:32. > :03:35.I thought I had not been out for a while. I've got a prescription which
:03:36. > :03:44.needs to be taken to the chemist. I will do that. Before heading home,
:03:45. > :03:50.he stopped off for a copy. I was getting a little bit tired. I went
:03:51. > :03:55.in, just had a coffee, sat for ten minutes, a little bit of a rest, and
:03:56. > :04:04.then made my way back along the same route. I got to the apartment main
:04:05. > :04:11.door and went to the keypad to put in the code. I remember getting it
:04:12. > :04:15.wrong at least three times because I remember saying, third time lucky.
:04:16. > :04:20.It was at this time I realised there was someone close to me. I turned
:04:21. > :04:25.around, couldn't see them properly. It was a male I did not recognise,
:04:26. > :04:32.so I said to them, are you living here? He said, no, I'm just
:04:33. > :04:37.visiting. I said, would you mind bringing my bell, then and he moved
:04:38. > :04:45.away and I thought no more of it. I made my way up the stairs. Got to
:04:46. > :04:53.the first floor landing. When I realised someone was behind me. And
:04:54. > :05:03.they pushed me into the banister and I felt like I was trapped. I felt a
:05:04. > :05:10.going into my pockets. The person then said, "I only want your wallet
:05:11. > :05:15.and your phone" something like that. He said, "Don't fight me." Within
:05:16. > :05:22.seconds of that, I was feeling blows to my head. And that was the last
:05:23. > :05:29.thing I remember. Until I came around in hospital sometime later.
:05:30. > :05:34.Leslie was attacked in his own home where he should feel the safest. The
:05:35. > :05:38.injury he sustained were horrific. Deeply unnecessary. Bearing in mind
:05:39. > :05:42.the offender only actually got away with Les' wallet, his face was
:05:43. > :05:46.extremely bruised, both his eyes were swollen, and he had a large
:05:47. > :05:50.swelling on his forehead, as well. He fell down the stairs which caused
:05:51. > :05:55.some really serious injuries to him, including a fractured kneecap which,
:05:56. > :06:01.for someone like Leslie, is completely horrific. When the
:06:02. > :06:07.reality of what happened dawned on me, I became a little bit of a
:06:08. > :06:13.quivering jelly in the hospital. Most people go through life saying
:06:14. > :06:22.that will never happen to me. But, when it does, it changes you. I'm
:06:23. > :06:28.much more aware of people around me now and everyone I see as a
:06:29. > :06:30.potential offender. It made me quite fearful, in that respect. As I get
:06:31. > :06:37.older, that's only going to increase. Paul Les.
:06:38. > :06:39.I'm joined by DC Louise Kelly from Greater Manchester Police.
:06:40. > :06:51.This was a particularly cruel attack. Les is visually impaired and
:06:52. > :06:55.walks with a white cane and whoever had attacked him would have seen
:06:56. > :06:58.this. He always enjoyed his independence but since the attack
:06:59. > :06:59.its knocked his confidence. Reminders of the detail of the
:07:00. > :07:05.attack. The attack happened on Monday 4th
:07:06. > :07:08.April 2016 just before 7pm at Les' Les had been out to do a few errands
:07:09. > :07:12.and walked home via Stretford Road. We believe he may have been followed
:07:13. > :07:15.back to his flat, where he was then robbed, punched
:07:16. > :07:18.and as a result of the attack. He's also fallen down the stairs
:07:19. > :07:21.and badly damaged his knee. And what do we know about the person
:07:22. > :07:23.who's did this? We believe the suspect is possibly
:07:24. > :07:26.an Asian or mixed race man, Approximately 5 foot 6
:07:27. > :07:29.and wearing a blue tracksuit. We believe he may have been riding
:07:30. > :07:33.a bicycle and may have fled Les's The only got away with his wallet,
:07:34. > :07:47.didn't he? Yes, that's correct. It's described as a brown leather
:07:48. > :07:50.wallet and had a small amount Les did try and protect
:07:51. > :07:53.himself but the violence used by the offender
:07:54. > :07:57.was completely unnecessary. And if you can help,
:07:58. > :08:01.please get in touch. Unfortunately Les' attacker
:08:02. > :08:05.wasn't caught on CCTV. It's nearly It's closing time
:08:06. > :08:25.at this shop in Bath Road. this shop assistants are packing
:08:26. > :08:30.away when two masked men walk in. The first guy is carrying two large
:08:31. > :08:35.knives and wearing a pair of tights over his head. If you look closely,
:08:36. > :08:43.we catch a glimpse of the second man before he pulls on his mask. Smile,
:08:44. > :08:45.you are on CCTV. The petrified shop assistants run away to safety with
:08:46. > :08:52.one of the men shouting after them to come back. Not likely! They go
:08:53. > :09:00.for a look around the shop. One tries to kick the storeroom door in
:09:01. > :09:05.but, wait, what's the handle for? Champs. They don't find anything at
:09:06. > :09:11.the back but as they turn, one of them even looks up the camera. They
:09:12. > :09:23.eventually give up and leave empty-handed. Who are these would-be
:09:24. > :09:26.robbers? It's a Monday evening in Humberside. A van is parked up near
:09:27. > :09:33.a building site. The bloke in the passenger seat seems to be scoping
:09:34. > :09:38.out the yard opposite. A few moments later, the van is going in. Two men,
:09:39. > :09:44.dressed as workmen, get out and take a closer look at a road roller. This
:09:45. > :09:46.may all seem quite normal, but there was a problem. This is not their
:09:47. > :09:51.building site, it's not their roller. The bloke in the high viz
:09:52. > :09:54.jacket tries to get the engine started while the other one in the
:09:55. > :09:59.white T-shirt watches his mate do all the hard graft. After a phone
:10:00. > :10:04.call, they finally managed to get the motor going. The guy in the
:10:05. > :10:09.white T-shirt has now put on a jumper, and got out some ramps from
:10:10. > :10:15.the van. Once it is loaded, they pack up and go. They turned the
:10:16. > :10:19.corner and the bloke in the bloody jumps out to change the van's
:10:20. > :10:20.numberplate. This machine is worth ?8,000.
:10:21. > :10:25.If you recognised anyone, get on the phone now.
:10:26. > :10:30.Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.
:10:31. > :10:35.Text CW, space and then your message.
:10:36. > :10:37.Texts will be charged at your standard message rate.
:10:38. > :10:49.Now, we're currently in the midst of the Euros but it's 50 years
:10:50. > :10:55.since England won the 1966 World Cup.
:10:56. > :10:58.Everyone remembers Sir Bobby Moore holding the cup.
:10:59. > :11:06.On Sunday 20 March 1966, the Jules Rimet trophy was stolen.
:11:07. > :11:08.Adam Comstive, you work here at the museum,
:11:09. > :11:20.Three months before the tournament began the trophy was on display in
:11:21. > :11:24.Westminster Hall in London and was actually stolen fold them as one
:11:25. > :11:28.security guard on duty, an elderly man, on a break, and it's pretty
:11:29. > :11:35.unbelievable the security levels back in those days. It wasn't stolen
:11:36. > :11:39.for very long, was it? No, it was found by a dog called Pickles, at
:11:40. > :11:41.the walk with his owner. We've actually got a clip of them. Take a
:11:42. > :11:45.look at this. As I was putting the lead
:11:46. > :11:49.on I noticed this package laying there, wrapped just in newspaper
:11:50. > :11:55.but very tightly bound with string. I tore a bit off the bottom
:11:56. > :12:00.and there was a blank shield, then there were the words Brazil,
:12:01. > :12:13.West Germany and Uruguay printed. My heart started thumping against my
:12:14. > :12:20.chest. It's the World Cup. After he found it, Pickles
:12:21. > :12:25.became a national hero He was awarded a number of honours
:12:26. > :12:29.and was even invited to the celebration banquet
:12:30. > :12:31.after England won the cup. Now, unfortunately, there are some
:12:32. > :12:34.other football-related crimes going on at the moment which have
:12:35. > :12:44.less of a happy ending over Football is a family game but
:12:45. > :12:54.unfortunately a small minority of people are ruining it for everybody
:12:55. > :12:59.else. If people are considering going to the football,'s what tips
:13:00. > :13:04.and advice would you give them to stay safe? I would say the vast
:13:05. > :13:08.majority of people there are safe and the matches are taking place in
:13:09. > :13:12.cities and towns quite densely populated, so if you are their
:13:13. > :13:17.travelling, if you do see large crowds gathering and there is
:13:18. > :13:20.clearly a mood change and it feels aggressive, and you see things
:13:21. > :13:25.you're not happy with, walk away, get out of the area and reported to
:13:26. > :13:29.police. Equally, avoid excessive alcohol drinking. Alcohol will be a
:13:30. > :13:33.factor in the violence and it's been sad to see the small minority of
:13:34. > :13:37.fans, England fan, getting involved in this trouble, but make sure you
:13:38. > :13:41.get out of the way and reported to police and idled so same unless
:13:42. > :13:45.you've got a ticket, avoid travelling. There are other places
:13:46. > :13:47.you can watch the game away from any problems. Thank you very much. Some
:13:48. > :13:49.sound advice there. When police investigate crimes,
:13:50. > :13:51.like football hooliganism, they often rely on video
:13:52. > :13:53.footage as evidence. Many officers already use
:13:54. > :13:55.Body Worn Cameras which record But one police force has
:13:56. > :13:59.gone a step further. For the last six months,
:14:00. > :14:01.Cheshire Constabulary has issued officers with video recorders,
:14:02. > :14:05.which stream images live, from a crime scene back
:14:06. > :14:13.to the control room. PC Darren Mundey is here,
:14:14. > :14:22.with one of the cameras. It's a standard video camera which
:14:23. > :14:26.we take out onto the ground and we have done for many, many years which
:14:27. > :14:30.of records onto a flash card cap as a back-up for us so that needs to go
:14:31. > :14:36.to court at a later date, the clever bit we have is this here. It uses
:14:37. > :14:39.technology and software which runs through and, using the cell network,
:14:40. > :14:50.we can broadcast live from anywhere but has a mobile phone signal into a
:14:51. > :14:56.control room. were so you just need that in the mobile phone signal? We
:14:57. > :15:00.have a live stream, and we can see some unrest. There are officers
:15:01. > :15:06.involved in some public order kit. Talk me through what we are seeing.
:15:07. > :15:11.We had a protest where police had been deployed on the camera has had
:15:12. > :15:14.a look in the control room has seen its starting to escalate from there
:15:15. > :15:21.and we had some petrol bombs thrown. There are bats being used. The
:15:22. > :15:24.control room can deploy staff appropriately and that the right
:15:25. > :15:30.time and that a good pace and in the right direction. The difference with
:15:31. > :15:36.CCTV is it is limited with the angle of the camera where as this can
:15:37. > :15:41.follow it. I think it's fair to say that the protest is not real. They
:15:42. > :15:45.are your staff and colleagues, but this is not pre-recorded, this is
:15:46. > :15:51.live as it is happening. These student police officers, and it's at
:15:52. > :15:56.the training centre in Winsford. But it does demonstrate how it works.
:15:57. > :16:00.This is not pre-recorded, it is live but this kit has helped you deal
:16:01. > :16:06.with real police emergencies, hasn't it? Yes we've used it where we had
:16:07. > :16:10.protests and the staff were deployed appropriately on the ground but the
:16:11. > :16:15.recording on the camera was able to go through the judicial process. The
:16:16. > :16:19.beauty of the kit is you are relying on a mobile phone signal. Should the
:16:20. > :16:23.signal go down, all is not lost. You can still draw out a number of
:16:24. > :16:30.interesting and decent evidential facts. Absolutely. We are relying on
:16:31. > :16:34.mobile phones and sometimes the signals drop but the camera still
:16:35. > :16:39.records and sends signals to the control room so we can draw a square
:16:40. > :16:45.around the bit we are interested in, some footwear, logo, somebody's
:16:46. > :16:49.face. Very quickly, do you see that this could possibly involve from the
:16:50. > :16:54.body worn cameras that they have at the moment? The technology is out
:16:55. > :16:58.there and there is a lot of work going on the body worn camera and
:16:59. > :17:00.streaming that back is on the horizon. I think this is brilliant,
:17:01. > :17:03.Darren. Thanks for showing us. Next, can you help police find
:17:04. > :17:06.the man who violently mugged a woman with learning disabilities
:17:07. > :17:14.in Wigan? 61-year-old Susan Bannister has
:17:15. > :17:20.lived in the Scholes area of Wigan for the last nine years. She is
:17:21. > :17:29.well-known in her local community. I like going out. I like going dancing
:17:30. > :17:36.on Wednesdays. Like going to work and talking to people. Susan has
:17:37. > :17:41.learning difficulties but her mother, Joan, has always encouraged
:17:42. > :17:45.her to live life to the full. We bought this house for Susan because
:17:46. > :17:49.I wanted to see her living independently for when I am not
:17:50. > :17:54.here. So she could live happily ever after. She is happy here, I am happy
:17:55. > :18:02.she is here. She goes to her voluntary job two days a week. She
:18:03. > :18:07.has a good life. But one sunny Thursday afternoon back in April,
:18:08. > :18:10.all of that changed. It was the Queen's Birthday and Susan was
:18:11. > :18:17.helping to put on a special party for the residents of her local care
:18:18. > :18:24.home where she works. I love the Royal family, and she's 90. I like
:18:25. > :18:30.talking to the old people. They like me, and it was nice. When Susan
:18:31. > :18:37.finished work, she met her boyfriend Michael and they walked to the
:18:38. > :18:44.shops. We went up to the chemist for Michael's tablets. But the couple
:18:45. > :18:47.were being watched. As Michael stepped into the chemist and Susan
:18:48. > :18:54.followed, she was viciously attacked. This fellow grabbed me at
:18:55. > :19:04.the back and knocked me flying off the step to get my necklace of May.
:19:05. > :19:11.I started to scream. It's the first time I have ever screamed in my
:19:12. > :19:14.life. As Susan lay helpless on the ground, the thief ripped to chains
:19:15. > :19:21.and rings from around her neck. He then ran off leaving Susan shocked
:19:22. > :19:30.and confused. I felt scared. He hurt me. She was bruised all down her
:19:31. > :19:35.left leg. Her neck was damaged when he dragged the necklaces. She had
:19:36. > :19:39.two tops on and he had ripped both from top to bottom. Awful. It's my
:19:40. > :19:44.jewellery, he shouldn't have taken it. The police are hoping that
:19:45. > :19:50.somebody saw this brutal attack and have pieced together the robber's
:19:51. > :19:53.escape route. The attacker ran from the chemist, cutting across this
:19:54. > :19:58.grass verge in front of the church when he turned right. We know the
:19:59. > :20:04.attacker continued to run along the street, where he made his escape
:20:05. > :20:09.through the bushes. Using the short cut suggests he has local knowledge
:20:10. > :20:13.and could well live nearby. Witnesses described the attacker as
:20:14. > :20:18.smartly dressed wearing a matching dark coloured tracksuit, trainers
:20:19. > :20:22.and dark sunglasses. We think Susan may have been targeted because she
:20:23. > :20:28.is vulnerable. It was a cowardly attack on Susan and one which I am
:20:29. > :20:33.personally appalled by. The robbery has had a lasting effect on Susan. I
:20:34. > :20:39.look around now to see if they are there. I want to catch them because
:20:40. > :20:43.they'll probably do it to other people. Susan wouldn't have been the
:20:44. > :20:47.first and she won't be the last, will she? I don't like what he's
:20:48. > :20:54.done. You shouldn't pick on people with learning difficulties. Because
:20:55. > :20:56.it's not nice to be knocked around. That is just terrible.
:20:57. > :21:01.Take another look at the man responsible.
:21:02. > :21:06.They've been linked to hundreds of deaths.
:21:07. > :21:10.We find out how the ban on legal highs is being policed.
:21:11. > :21:14.And the family pet, stolen and killed.
:21:15. > :21:26.She was found with a carrier bag on her head and wrapped around her neck
:21:27. > :21:29.was some curtain wire. Now, police here in Manchester
:21:30. > :21:32.are in the middle of a month long campaign warning people
:21:33. > :21:34.against the dangers of drink As part of that campaign police
:21:35. > :21:38.here in Manchester have released some really shocking footage,
:21:39. > :21:52.PC Matt Picton is here now Back on the 29th of May this year we
:21:53. > :21:55.had a shocking incident, and we can see the video of a young child with
:21:56. > :21:59.his mother selecting some sweets from a shelf and a drunk driver
:22:00. > :22:03.approaches the front of the shop and drives straight through the front of
:22:04. > :22:08.the shop, demolishing the shop and traps the child inside. It is
:22:09. > :22:11.shocking. How is the little boy? I spoke to the family yesterday and he
:22:12. > :22:15.only suffered minor cuts and bruises, which is quite remarkable,
:22:16. > :22:19.but the psychological effects on him and his sister who witnesses are
:22:20. > :22:23.severe. That is totally understandable. What happened to the
:22:24. > :22:26.driver? The driver was arrested and was charged and went to court and
:22:27. > :22:31.was disqualified for three years after pleading guilty to provide --
:22:32. > :22:36.failing to provide a breath sample and driving without due care. What
:22:37. > :22:41.is happening with your campaign? It is a month-long campaign for drink
:22:42. > :22:44.and drugs driving and we want to hammer home the message that
:22:45. > :22:48.drinking and taking drugs and driving is not acceptable in any
:22:49. > :22:51.circumstances. We don't want people to stop enjoying football going out
:22:52. > :22:56.and having a drink but do not get behind the wheel of a car. Part of
:22:57. > :23:02.the campaign, it's just all about drinking, drugs are a big problem.
:23:03. > :23:09.One of the biggest problems is new psychoactive substances formerly
:23:10. > :23:13.known legal highs. The substances exploded onto the scene in 2009 when
:23:14. > :23:25.Method Roan became fashionable and readily available. -- mephedrone.
:23:26. > :23:28.The government soon bandit but producers of legal highs found other
:23:29. > :23:32.ways to manufacture within the law. The drugs were often labelled as not
:23:33. > :23:36.for human consumption, but that didn't stop people taking them. For
:23:37. > :23:43.those who fell ill, treating them was far from simple. From a medical
:23:44. > :23:48.point of view we know, for example, heroin causes respiratory and
:23:49. > :23:53.cardiac depression. We note cocaine puts extra strain on your heart and
:23:54. > :23:59.can lead to cardiac damage but we don't know about legal highs. In
:24:00. > :24:06.2014, while still legal, the drugs were linked to 150 deaths in the UK.
:24:07. > :24:11.Last month across just four days, nine people in Rochdale alone needed
:24:12. > :24:17.treatment after taking them. But things are changing. Three weeks ago
:24:18. > :24:21.a new blanket ban was brought in, making all so-called legal highs
:24:22. > :24:24.illegal. And police in Rochdale were the first to react.
:24:25. > :24:26.Here with me now is DI Andy Butterworth who's team made
:24:27. > :24:30.Have legal highs always been a problem in Greater Manchester?
:24:31. > :24:32.We have always had problems with legal highs in Manchester
:24:33. > :24:35.unfortunately like many other places in the country.
:24:36. > :24:38.But at the time the legislation came through this also coincided
:24:39. > :24:40.with number of people falling ill in the through taking them.
:24:41. > :24:50.Well, over the period of 4 days, nine males in the area became ill
:24:51. > :24:55.after taking suspected psychoactive substances,
:24:56. > :24:57.two ended up on a ventilator in hospital.
:24:58. > :25:02.As a result we searched shops in Rochdale thought to sell
:25:03. > :25:05.the substances and from one of the shops we seized these.
:25:06. > :25:09.As you can see, there are lots of different types.
:25:10. > :25:12.And these ones, Chronic, Pandoras Box, Inhilliation,
:25:13. > :25:15.Clockwork Orange and Cherry Bomb were taken by the nine people
:25:16. > :25:17.being taken ill just before the ban came in.
:25:18. > :25:20.Then on the day the ban came in your team made the first
:25:21. > :25:32.My team stop searched a mail at the shop and he appeared to be under the
:25:33. > :25:37.influence of something and they recovered a psychotic substance and
:25:38. > :25:39.subsequently they proceeded with the arrest of the person who sold it to
:25:40. > :25:42.him. So three weeks ago these
:25:43. > :25:46.were all legal? That is certainly not the case now,
:25:47. > :25:49.and those found supplying any new psychoactive drugs
:25:50. > :25:50.face serious consequences. Next, to a case where a beloved pet
:25:51. > :25:55.was killed on Christmas Eve, leaving his distraught owner
:25:56. > :26:10.searching for answers. Anthony Taylor from near Stockport
:26:11. > :26:22.has always loved dogs. Two years ago he bought a puppy and the pair were
:26:23. > :26:26.inseparable. Everybody loved Troyer. She was my best friend. She was with
:26:27. > :26:32.me all the time and I took are as many places as I could. Troyer was a
:26:33. > :26:38.rare breed, who had been imported from the Canary Islands. People see
:26:39. > :26:41.them to be may be aggressive in the way they look but they are pretty
:26:42. > :26:45.much just like a family guard dog. My girlfriend's daughter used to
:26:46. > :26:49.sleep with her on the road and they used to but their arms around each
:26:50. > :26:57.other. Pretty cute. She was part of the family. Troyer had her own
:26:58. > :27:01.luxury kennel in the garden. It was a really quality well built kennel
:27:02. > :27:05.which I had purpose-built for her, heated, everything like that. As
:27:06. > :27:09.Christmas approached Anthony was looking forward to celebrating with
:27:10. > :27:15.his girlfriend, her children and Troyer. We got Troyer a big bone and
:27:16. > :27:20.we have that under the tree because we wanted to open presents with her
:27:21. > :27:24.as well. On the evening of the 23rd of December, Anthony fed Troyer in
:27:25. > :27:28.her kennel and asked his mum to look after her while he stayed at his
:27:29. > :27:38.girl friend 's house. It was the last time he would ever see his
:27:39. > :27:42.beloved id dog. -- his beloved dog. During the night, Troyer's kennel
:27:43. > :27:48.was broken into and she vanished. I was devastated. I was devastated. I
:27:49. > :27:56.just knew that somebody had taken her because of the way she had been
:27:57. > :28:01.locked up at night. Anthony spent all of Christmas Day searching for
:28:02. > :28:06.Troyer. I pretty much spoiled Christmas altogether. I add other
:28:07. > :28:10.people helping me out, driving round different areas. I was getting
:28:11. > :28:15.messages of hundreds of people to tell me they were searching for her.
:28:16. > :28:19.Finally, weeks later, a friend called with the news Anthony had
:28:20. > :28:23.been dreading. And she phoned me to say that she thinks there is a dog
:28:24. > :28:28.in the canal and she took a picture and sent it through to me and I
:28:29. > :28:37.could make the pattern out, and I pretty much knew. I had a few tears
:28:38. > :28:43.while I was at work. I got in my van and I drove straight home. She was
:28:44. > :28:46.just lying on the side of the canal bank with the cover over and record
:28:47. > :29:00.wrapped around her neck. Her death was investigated by police
:29:01. > :29:05.and the RSPCA. They confirmed the dog had been killed deliberately.
:29:06. > :29:09.Troya was found with a carrier bag on her head and wrapped around her
:29:10. > :29:13.neck was some curtain wire. Also attached to her collar was washing
:29:14. > :29:18.line. The postmortem revealed that was probably strangled and
:29:19. > :29:22.suspended. I can't actually believe something like this would happen.
:29:23. > :29:26.I've never encountered anything like this. It's animal cruelty at its
:29:27. > :29:35.worst. It's absolutely horrific, really. Months later, Anthony is
:29:36. > :29:40.still searching for answers about Troya's death. It's just more
:29:41. > :29:48.whodunnit and why. I just want to know the reasons why. She was such a
:29:49. > :29:53.nice dog, sociable dog, everybody liked her, and if they had a
:29:54. > :30:02.problem, just knock on the door and talk to me, have a chat. She has
:30:03. > :30:05.left a massive gap, but sometimes she just comes back into my head.
:30:06. > :30:12.I've had the odd nightmare and stuff like that. She just appears
:30:13. > :30:14.sometimes. She's never forgotten. PC Torkington, you've been
:30:15. > :30:18.involved in the case. It's hard to believe that someone
:30:19. > :30:21.could do this. That's right and we think that two
:30:22. > :30:33.people may have taken A neighbour heard some noise around
:30:34. > :30:38.3am on Christmas Eve so we think she was taken around that time. Did a
:30:39. > :30:42.postmortem revealed anything else? Unfortunately, it was not able to
:30:43. > :30:46.tell us what time Troya entered the canals that could be any time
:30:47. > :30:52.between Christmas Eve 2015 and lunch was found on January 18. You find
:30:53. > :30:57.dog theft is a big problem? Not a massive problem. Sometimes are taken
:30:58. > :31:04.for dogfighting. She may been taken for that reason but pure speculation
:31:05. > :31:08.at this time. The local people really rallied around for Anthony
:31:09. > :31:12.when they found out about Troya, didn't they? Yes, they held a vigil
:31:13. > :31:19.for Tara and was a massive campaign. We've also raised about ?2500 as a
:31:20. > :31:25.reward so we want information on who can tell if they saw Troya between
:31:26. > :31:31.Christmas Eve 2015 and January the 18th 2016. Is Anthony doing OK now?
:31:32. > :31:34.I believe he's getting over the initial shock. He just wants help to
:31:35. > :31:41.find those responsible. Please come forward
:31:42. > :31:43.of you have any information. Now it's time for a look
:31:44. > :31:46.at today's Wanted Faces. Police forces around the country

:33:04. > :33:08.and his friends had been on a night When they came outside just before
:33:09. > :33:24.2am he was assaulted. The last thing I remember was being
:33:25. > :33:30.at the bar and my girlfriend was buying a drink and the next time I
:33:31. > :33:32.saw daylight was in hospital. Outside the Tiger Tiger nightclub he
:33:33. > :33:38.was punched to the ground. Whilst it was lying on the floor, another man
:33:39. > :33:44.ran over and stamped on his head. Leaving him with life changing
:33:45. > :33:48.industries. -- injuries. The blood was rushing into my lungs and they
:33:49. > :33:53.were filling up with blood. So they had to put me into an induced coma.
:33:54. > :33:58.This person left me for dead and made my mum and my friends say
:33:59. > :34:02.goodbye to me. I don't want it to happen to anyone else. Just awful.
:34:03. > :34:04.I'm joined by Detective Constable Anthony Strong
:34:05. > :34:10.This experience has had a profound effect on Joe and his family.
:34:11. > :34:18.Joe suffered very serious injuries to his head and jaw,
:34:19. > :34:23.He's also suffered serious memory loss, which he has yet
:34:24. > :34:26.His family were told to expect the worst by doctors
:34:27. > :34:28.at the hospital, which is obviously extremely traumatic for them.
:34:29. > :34:31.What can you tell us about what happened that night?
:34:32. > :34:34.In the early hours of 23rd December last year, just before 2am,
:34:35. > :34:36.Joe and his friends left the club and went outside.
:34:37. > :34:39.They were were confronted by another group of men.
:34:40. > :34:47.As he lay on the floor a second man came over and stamped on his head,
:34:48. > :34:58.That Samantha are looking for. We can seize on CTV of it. Yes, the man
:34:59. > :35:04.we are looking for is an Asian male, aged about 20 years old, five foot
:35:05. > :35:08.five, slim build, on the evening wearing a black jumper with a white
:35:09. > :35:14.shirt underneath and blue jeans. He's also got short dark hair in a
:35:15. > :35:20.side parting style. We would urge anybody who recognises this man to
:35:21. > :35:23.contact the police. He has suffered quite physical injuries but as one

:35:28. > :35:29.family so please get in touch with us as ever. Details on your screen.
:35:30. > :35:32.Rav, back to you the studio. Next, we need your help to catch
:35:33. > :35:35.a prolific gang of distraction burglars who've targeted elderly
:35:36. > :35:37.people across two counties Here to tell us more is DS
:35:38. > :35:41.Ian Grimble from Suffolk Police, Ian, you've been able to link
:35:42. > :35:45.a spate of burglaries On Saturday 9th April we had
:35:46. > :36:06.reports of seven very A ruthless gang of three or four
:36:07. > :36:10.males, or disguised, and one of the techniques they used was to try to
:36:11. > :36:14.pretend to be from the water board, in order to steal valuables and cash
:36:15. > :36:19.from elderly people. Let's have a look at a map and talk me through
:36:20. > :36:24.what we're looking at here and where the offences taken place.
:36:25. > :36:27.Yes, we believe the gang travelled up the A14 and went across country.
:36:28. > :36:30.They started in Big Icklington in Bury St Edmunds at around 2.30pm,
:36:31. > :36:32.attempting to trick their way into an elderly man's home,
:36:33. > :36:35.Around an hour later, we think the same men
:36:36. > :36:38.were in Knackton in Ipswich, before striking again in the village
:36:39. > :36:44.I want to talk about that at the moment, particularly nasty. They
:36:45. > :36:55.then moved on to commit four more burglaries in Norfolk. They targeted
:36:56. > :36:59.a 94-year-old woman. They stole ?3000 cash from her and also stole
:37:00. > :37:04.high-value jewellery and cash from the other addresses. Totally
:37:05. > :37:09.unacceptable. The 80-year-old had particularly horrendous ordeal,
:37:10. > :37:13.didn't he? Yes, the 84-year-old was pinned down, had a screwdriver held
:37:14. > :37:20.to a slowed and was threatened. This is a ruthless gang that... They
:37:21. > :37:23.clearly need to be caught. Thankfully you have some CCTV which
:37:24. > :37:30.you think could be of the offenders. We have got a car. This is a Jaguar
:37:31. > :37:34.XS are which we believe was stolen on the 24th of March from the
:37:35. > :37:40.Wellingborough area. It was used on false plates. This was 11:30am at a
:37:41. > :37:45.BP in Wellingborough. One man goes into the garage and fills up. They
:37:46. > :37:52.were all wearing flat caps, shirt and tie is, and they are aware of
:37:53. > :37:57.the CCTV and tried to hide their face. These are individuals we are
:37:58. > :38:03.interested in. So this person inside and also this one with a hat on,
:38:04. > :38:10.they always wear their hats. That's correct, Rav. They all wore smart
:38:11. > :38:13.clothing, shirt, ties, trilby hats. Surely someone must know who they
:38:14. > :38:19.are and that's all you want. You just need names from the public?
:38:20. > :38:23.That's correct. If anybody can identify these individuals and saw
:38:24. > :38:31.them on that date, on the Saturday, and also anyone who was got any
:38:32. > :38:32.information about the stolen Jaguar. We need information about the car
:38:33. > :38:41.and who they are. Take another look at these images
:38:42. > :38:44.and if you know who they are, Over the weekend, there
:38:45. > :38:48.was a huge festival here in Manchester with over 80,000 -
:38:49. > :38:50.Parklife. Just like any festival, the police
:38:51. > :38:53.were expecting many drugs on site. In charge of the security operation
:38:54. > :39:02.on behalf of GMP was Lovely to meet you. It was a
:39:03. > :39:06.successful in busy weekend for you, wasn't it? I'm pleased with how
:39:07. > :39:11.things went. We seized hundreds of drugs, and I brought a selection to
:39:12. > :39:16.show you. How did it work? We have a really strong relationship in
:39:17. > :39:19.partnership with Park life, the organiser and the event security.
:39:20. > :39:24.Everybody is search, passing through sniffer dogs. The exterior of the
:39:25. > :39:29.site there are drugs around the bins where people can surrender them in
:39:30. > :39:36.those areas. Last year, they were so popular, we had to bring in bigger
:39:37. > :39:39.bins. We also run a policing operations throughout the weekend to
:39:40. > :39:44.target drug dealers as well. It's a real team effort at festivals like
:39:45. > :39:47.this especially concerning drugs. Yes, huge effort. Everyone committed
:39:48. > :39:55.to making sure they enjoy themselves, enjoy the festival
:39:56. > :39:59.safely. When we seized drugs, it's important to understand what they
:40:00. > :40:02.are. And, more importantly, what is in those drugs, so we work closely
:40:03. > :40:07.with the loop charity who do testing for us. Thank you very much. Let me
:40:08. > :40:11.introduce you now to Works with police here
:40:12. > :40:17.and across the country at clubs and festivals and you have this
:40:18. > :40:25.great piece of drug testing we can identify drugs used in about
:40:26. > :40:30.60 seconds. We tested 300 people at the Festival last weekend and so we
:40:31. > :40:36.could let emergency services no on-site what was circulating. Let's
:40:37. > :40:42.get the testing starting. We have got a packet with a white powder,
:40:43. > :40:45.unknown. We put a sample onto the plate, pull the clamp-down and it
:40:46. > :40:50.will compare the unique footprint that sample with the database which
:40:51. > :40:54.contains all of the different samples, so if we wait 60 seconds,
:40:55. > :41:01.the results will come up and we can see if you look at the screen, this
:41:02. > :41:06.is 928 out of 1000 hit quality of MDMA. Very high quality.
:41:07. > :41:10.Essentially, a matching process. A laser beam goes through here and
:41:11. > :41:13.matches it with the database. That's correct and there's hundreds and
:41:14. > :41:21.hundreds of different drugs on the database. Earlier the girl died from
:41:22. > :41:27.ecstasy. Unfortunately, 17-year-old died in Manchester last month taking
:41:28. > :41:33.red MasterCard pills. We tested them on site and they had 250 mg of MDMA
:41:34. > :41:40.which is ten times the strength of some of the pills. Gosh, let's see
:41:41. > :41:44.what the results show up. This shows the sample, this bag contains
:41:45. > :41:51.crystal MDMA, with a hit quality of 900 made out of 1000 which is high
:41:52. > :41:55.purity. That is a high strength and it shows how effective this testing
:41:56. > :41:59.is. It's really helping. It's saving people's lives at the end of the
:42:00. > :42:01.day. Thank you very much. Rav, back to you.
:42:02. > :42:05.Just time for an update on what's come in on the phones and remember
:42:06. > :42:08.the shocking raid at the home of Dennis and June in Rotherham
:42:09. > :42:13.As a result of this appeal, a 21 man has been charged with arson full for
:42:14. > :42:23.the appeared before Westminster magistrates yesterday. Sam Sheldon
:42:24. > :42:27.had a broken cheekbone after a night out with friends and he was attacked
:42:28. > :42:30.and we are now looking into potential new lead on the attack as
:42:31. > :42:31.a thank you to everyone who's got in touch.
:42:32. > :42:34.Please do keep those calls, texts and emails coming in.
:42:35. > :42:36.Now Michelle, where are you going to be next week?
:42:37. > :42:39.Rav, we've had a great week here in the North West
:42:40. > :42:45.And on Monday you can see how a shift out on patrol
:42:46. > :42:47.with South Yorkshire Police ended with them having to ram
:42:48. > :42:59.For more details about the crimes on today's
:43:00. > :43:02.programme, go to our website Before we go, here's another look at this
:43:03. > :43:07.If you know where any of them are you know what to do.
:43:08. > :43:11.We'll be back on Monday morning, until then, take care.
