:00:00. > :00:09.We're back for our final week - and waiting for your calls to bring
:00:10. > :00:21.The pub landlord - tied up and beaten for his takings.
:00:22. > :00:25.It was very brutal. I could not eat solids for two weeks because there
:00:26. > :00:32.was a hairline fracture of the jaw. And this scene of devastation isn't
:00:33. > :00:34.quite what it seems - Hello and welcome to the final week
:00:35. > :01:00.of this year's Crimewatch Roadshow. We've travelled the length
:01:01. > :01:02.and breadth of the UK over the last three weeks,
:01:03. > :01:04.going behind the scenes with police and appealing for your
:01:05. > :01:07.help to crack unsolved cases. And there's lots more
:01:08. > :01:09.to come today, including... A nightmare before Christmas
:01:10. > :01:12.for a restaurant manager The door did swing open and then
:01:13. > :01:21.appeared this man with black tights on his head with a Santa outfit
:01:22. > :01:23.over the top. And do you know who left Lee
:01:24. > :01:30.with these horrific head injuries? Today, the Roadshow has
:01:31. > :01:32.moved on to Waddington in Lincolnshire and the Fire
:01:33. > :01:35.and Rescue centre there. Although, Michelle it looks more
:01:36. > :01:42.like a war zone to me. It does look just like
:01:43. > :01:48.the scene of an earthquake And there's a good reason for it
:01:49. > :01:53.needing to look so realistic. I've come to a specialist training
:01:54. > :01:56.centre for the emergency services - like the urban search and rescue
:01:57. > :01:59.team you can see behind me. And this morning, I'll be seeing
:02:00. > :02:02.just how they prepare First though, police
:02:03. > :02:08.need your help to catch the masked gang behind a terrifying robbery
:02:09. > :02:22.at a quiet country pub. The Rising Sun is situated in the
:02:23. > :02:29.heart of rural Derbyshire. The landlord has run this country pub
:02:30. > :02:35.for four years. The community is very good. Local people, very
:02:36. > :02:44.friendly. Everyone knows each other. All very helpful. I have two pugs
:02:45. > :02:48.Milo and Juno. They are fantastic. 90% of the time they are downstairs
:02:49. > :02:56.in the pub with us. It is a great area around here for dog walking. On
:02:57. > :03:02.Easter Monday, Stephen closed up after the bank holiday weekend. It
:03:03. > :03:07.had been a very busy day. I had been mostly working in the kitchen. After
:03:08. > :03:11.locking up the pub, Stephen headed upstairs or Milo and Juno. As
:03:12. > :03:17.Stephen was watching television, Juno seemed to sense something was
:03:18. > :03:21.wrong. Juno jumped off the sofa and started barking. I stood up and went
:03:22. > :03:34.out of the door to see what it was she was barking out. -- at. The
:03:35. > :03:40.intruders had burst in and started attacking Stephen. It was very
:03:41. > :03:44.brutal. There were lots of blows to the head. It got to the point where
:03:45. > :03:50.I thought this will either end up with me being killed or, certainly I
:03:51. > :04:01.was at the point where I was close to passing out from it. They dragged
:04:02. > :04:05.me to my feet. I could hear them talking on some cells saying, put
:04:06. > :04:11.him in the bedroom, put him in the bed. One put a pillow case over my
:04:12. > :04:20.head. Another one was tying my hands behind my back. The men ransacked
:04:21. > :04:25.the place, searching for money. They went through every tablet, through
:04:26. > :04:33.the drawers in the bedroom, on the floor and emptied them, looking for
:04:34. > :04:36.cash. They put me in the bathroom. Stephen was ordered not to move but
:04:37. > :04:44.struggled desperately to free himself. While I was trying to get
:04:45. > :04:48.my hands free, I must have moved and not something on the floor. One of
:04:49. > :04:53.them flew the door straight open. Came in and punch me round ahead
:04:54. > :04:57.again saying, we told you not to move. Shut the door. I think I must
:04:58. > :05:02.have waited a minute or two. Could not hear any noise outside so I
:05:03. > :05:08.started to wriggle my hands free. As soon as I got a hand free, I pulled
:05:09. > :05:22.Attila Case of my head. I heard a noise outside the door and I froze.
:05:23. > :05:27.What should I do? Fortunately, it was just Juno. Seeing Juno waiting,
:05:28. > :05:34.as opposed to three guys in overalls and it was a big relief. The
:05:35. > :05:41.attackers had fled, taking thousands of pounds in cash. Stephen was left
:05:42. > :05:46.with a number of injuries. One of my fingers was broken. I could not eat
:05:47. > :05:50.solids for two weeks just because my drawer, there had been a hairline
:05:51. > :05:55.fracture on the jaw so I could not eat anything. Round the neck, you
:05:56. > :06:00.could see where they had been choking me. There were a few
:06:01. > :06:08.bruises. Stephen's scars were not just physical. Most nights, a replay
:06:09. > :06:14.in my head, was I could have done differently? It brings it back and
:06:15. > :06:21.makes a vivid again. Juno has been left traumatised. If she hears a
:06:22. > :06:26.creek in the building, she jumps up straightaway, starts barking at the
:06:27. > :06:30.door. Some night she will sit and stare at the door, starts growling.
:06:31. > :06:40.To be honest, that makes me quite nervous. It is still fear that
:06:41. > :06:47.someone has gone in. For Stephen, support from the community has made
:06:48. > :06:50.him determined to carry on. I have experienced the worst of humanity
:06:51. > :06:54.and the best. All my neighbours are my friends. If I were to run away
:06:55. > :06:59.from it, it would be letting them win, letting them beat me more than
:07:00. > :07:04.they already have. I do not want that to happen.
:07:05. > :07:07.A horrific attack in such a tight knit community.
:07:08. > :07:08.DC Stephen Pullar, of Derbyshire Constabulary
:07:09. > :07:21.Remind us of the details of the attack. This took place back on 28th
:07:22. > :07:26.of March, the bank holiday Monday, Easter Monday evening. It was about
:07:27. > :07:32.10:30pm when two men burst into The Rising Sun in the small village of
:07:33. > :07:37.Middleton in the Peak District. They started to attack the landlord.
:07:38. > :07:45.These thieves knew what they wanted, didn't they? They were looking for
:07:46. > :07:48.cash. With it being a bank holiday weekend, they were expecting a lot
:07:49. > :07:53.of cash but there was not the amount they were hoping for. Stephen tried
:07:54. > :07:59.to fight back but sustains nasty injuries. He did. He sustained a
:08:00. > :08:03.broken jaw and could not eat solids for a couple of weeks that he broke
:08:04. > :08:07.the finger trying to fend off an attack. It is the mental toll it has
:08:08. > :08:13.taken on him as well. The support of the locals in the village has been
:08:14. > :08:18.invaluable. What else do we know about the people who did this? Two
:08:19. > :08:23.men broke him. Another was searching the premises for cash. They're
:08:24. > :08:29.looking for three, four men. One was six foot tall and the other was
:08:30. > :08:33.five. Both broad build. A slightly shorter one was five foot seven,
:08:34. > :08:44.slim build. They all had North East regional accents. This has affected
:08:45. > :08:45.Stephen and the dog? They are bearing up well under the
:08:46. > :08:49.circumstances. Well, if you know anything
:08:50. > :08:52.about that nasty attack on Stephen at today's selection
:08:53. > :09:07.of crooks caught on camera. A silver car pulls up outside a
:09:08. > :09:14.house in Shropshire. A man gets out and checks to see if anyone is home.
:09:15. > :09:19.He is in luck. No one is in. He sets to work in trying to break through
:09:20. > :09:23.the patio doors you can see him in a reflection of the TV. He searches
:09:24. > :09:30.the house. What is the after? According to police, he nabs a
:09:31. > :09:35.white, jewellery box. He goes to leave but not before giving us quite
:09:36. > :09:41.a few. Cheeky! He drives away but not for long. Two minutes later he
:09:42. > :09:45.speeds back up the drives -- the drive and runs back inside. He
:09:46. > :09:49.returns to the kitchen and has with him another hall in a pillow case.
:09:50. > :09:56.Once he has finally got enough, he heads out. 11 grand's worth of items
:09:57. > :10:00.were taken by this man and over five grand's worth of damage was done to
:10:01. > :10:09.the door. This burglar gave the victims eight deal. Let's crack this
:10:10. > :10:18.one. Get on the blower. It is a Sunday at this church in Bristol.
:10:19. > :10:24.November 20 14. This man may well want to confess his sins. There are
:10:25. > :10:28.candles of remembrance and proud. He fumbles in his pockets. He is not
:10:29. > :10:31.interested in worshipping to the heavens, it is the charity box
:10:32. > :10:35.underneath. He pulls out what appears to be a specially adapted to
:10:36. > :10:39.and prepares it ready for his evil crime. After a few minutes of
:10:40. > :10:44.fumbling around, he manages to prise open the box. He takes out the cash
:10:45. > :10:48.and simply walks away from the police believe the same man targeted
:10:49. > :10:52.the same church the previous month. Again using a specially adapted tool
:10:53. > :11:01.to open the charity box which children and elderly people had paid
:11:02. > :11:04.into. Police are praying you can name him today.
:11:05. > :11:06.If you recognised anyone, get on the phone now.
:11:07. > :11:08.The number is 08000 468999 Calls are free
:11:09. > :11:13.Text CW, space and then your message.
:11:14. > :11:16.Texts will be charged at your standard message rate.
:11:17. > :11:30.This morning, I'm just outside Lincoln at Waddington Fire
:11:31. > :11:33.and Rescue Training Centre where blue light teams train in this
:11:34. > :11:44.Neil is with me now. You have travelled to disaster sites and
:11:45. > :11:49.trained teams here. What is the thinking behind the setup?
:11:50. > :11:56.We decided to create a realistic environment where firefighters could
:11:57. > :12:05.train for real, honed skills and be as professional as can be. What
:12:06. > :12:09.exercise will be happening today? Simulating a major explosion at a
:12:10. > :12:16.school. Teams going to go in and rescue. Some tools you use include
:12:17. > :12:27.sniffer dogs. We have a better in sniffer dog here, 15-year-old Holly.
:12:28. > :12:34.You were given an award. We received from the Queen the MBA and I am very
:12:35. > :12:39.proud of that. Thank you. I'm going to join Rick Warner, who also trains
:12:40. > :12:45.the urban rescue teams. Talk me through what we will do. The dogs
:12:46. > :12:48.indicated there was a life it to behind this concrete block, through
:12:49. > :12:58.the scent of that person. We need to know in, to wear about SAC
:12:59. > :13:06.casualties, so we can break through. I shall join you in here. We have
:13:07. > :13:11.some impressive kit here. We have some seismic kit working on
:13:12. > :13:16.vibrations. Is that casualties is knocking, coughing or scratching on
:13:17. > :13:20.the concrete, that picks up. It picks up small vibrations. You can
:13:21. > :13:25.see the casualties indicating we have some sound the other side of
:13:26. > :13:31.this. What we do is go to the next piece of kit. Move it to the side.
:13:32. > :13:34.We have pre-drilled a hole. Drill a hole carefully through. The
:13:35. > :13:39.casualties might be on the other side of that. We will put the search
:13:40. > :13:46.camera through. Hopefully we'll be able to see a bit him, see something
:13:47. > :13:51.there. We can see a face if we turn. It is difficult sometimes to see the
:13:52. > :13:59.casualties. After a blast, you get cement dust everywhere. If James
:14:00. > :14:12.gives us a wave... He is alive and well. What next? We break a concrete
:14:13. > :14:18.triangle. A stitch cut or a rough and ready cut which uses a hydraulic
:14:19. > :14:23.breaker to break through the concrete so you can retrieve the
:14:24. > :14:29.victim. They may have been there for days, or for a long time, in that
:14:30. > :14:32.space. Thank you so much food that is really use. And great to see.
:14:33. > :14:35.Sounds like another successful rescue.
:14:36. > :14:39.Here's what's still to come this morning.
:14:40. > :14:41.The callous burglars, who ransacked a 94 year
:14:42. > :14:46.I'm deaf to begin with so I never had my hearing aid
:14:47. > :14:51.It's upsetting, it's really upsetting.
:14:52. > :14:52.And rescuing passengers from a smoke-filled plane.
:14:53. > :14:55.How emergency services train for real life disasters.
:14:56. > :14:57.There's plenty of casualties in there.
:14:58. > :15:03.Watch out for falling debris on the plane.
:15:04. > :15:06.But first, police in Greater Manchester need your help to find
:15:07. > :15:08.the gang responsible for a savage attack on a young father
:15:09. > :15:14.33 year old Lee Crane has been left with life changing head
:15:15. > :15:22.Joining me now is Detective Inspector Charlotte Cadden.
:15:23. > :15:30.Detective, what do we know about the events of that night?
:15:31. > :15:34.hours of Saturday 2nd April, Lee was walking back from town
:15:35. > :15:36.towards his family home in the Tonge Moore area.
:15:37. > :15:39.He remembers walking along George Barton Street when a group
:15:40. > :15:44.He then continued walking back to his mum's house in Starkie Road
:15:45. > :15:47.Lee then made a cup of tea and sat on the step at the front
:15:48. > :15:57.We can see a map of the area here where the incident happened. This is
:15:58. > :16:06.where Lee was found outside his mum's address. Two men approached
:16:07. > :16:10.him and asked for a cigarette. They were asking him for the past code of
:16:11. > :16:14.his phone. The first punch was thrown at Lee Erwin then he was
:16:15. > :16:19.attacked and it spilled out into the street. Luckily, a witness saw this
:16:20. > :16:24.and Lee suffered devastating injuries from this attack. They
:16:25. > :16:29.really are horrific injuries that he suffered. The shape of his head had
:16:30. > :16:34.changed because a large part of his skull had to be removed. Lee went
:16:35. > :16:38.down onto the floor, were stamped on, and consequently has had to have
:16:39. > :16:42.the front part of his skull removed, suffered a bleed on the brain and
:16:43. > :16:46.memory loss but luckily it is going back now. Slowly he is able to
:16:47. > :16:49.remember some things about this night, and has been able to give you
:16:50. > :16:52.a description of some of the attackers. We're looking for men,
:16:53. > :17:04.three of them in their early 20s. The man who first punched him
:17:05. > :17:07.was white, with light brown hair, wearing a cap or a hoody
:17:08. > :17:09.with his hair visible A second man was also white,
:17:10. > :17:13.with short brown wavy hair wearing a blue top
:17:14. > :17:15.with orange patches on the arm. The third man was of mixed race
:17:16. > :17:18.but fairly light skinned, possibly Asian, early 20's,
:17:19. > :17:20.he had distinctive hair with a possible outgrown
:17:21. > :17:22.Mohican with shaven hair round the sides and back,
:17:23. > :17:24.wearing short black coat. And male 4 , Lee describes as older,
:17:25. > :17:27.mid twenties to early thirties - and was more violent,
:17:28. > :17:29.seemed like the ring leader. He was was white, slim,
:17:30. > :17:32.5'7" with short dark He was wearing a black round necked
:17:33. > :17:40.jumper with a logo on it Let's have another look at the map,
:17:41. > :17:42.we see the direction they made. Yellow macro you can see where Lee
:17:43. > :17:45.was found, they ran up Entwistle Street towards Ainsworth Lane, so a
:17:46. > :17:48.lot of residence there, although it was now in the morning. Luckily his
:17:49. > :17:50.memory is slowly coming back but he has been left with life changing
:17:51. > :17:53.injuries so it is just those names that you need people to give you
:17:54. > :17:55.now. That's right. Thank you for joining us. If anyone has any
:17:56. > :17:56.information about this brutal attack and the people behind it, please
:17:57. > :18:01.come forward now. Michelle. Next to Alfreton in Derbyshire,
:18:02. > :18:04.and when Santa dropped in to a fast food restaurant just before
:18:05. > :18:14.Christmas, he didn't have Michael works as a manager in a busy
:18:15. > :18:18.fast food restaurant in Alfreton, Derbyshire. I have worked for the
:18:19. > :18:24.company for 18 years. The team are great, fantastic. They are very much
:18:25. > :18:29.a family. They just work with each other, they go out and socialise
:18:30. > :18:40.with each other as well. So a very close team. On December 19, the
:18:41. > :18:45.staff were working the last weekend before Christmas, and everyone's
:18:46. > :18:48.minds were on the festive season ahead. The team worked hard that
:18:49. > :18:54.night and very much had a good night with it, as well. As his colleagues
:18:55. > :18:57.were cleaning up, Michael was finishing his paperwork. I was in
:18:58. > :19:05.the office at the time, approximately around half ten at
:19:06. > :19:16.night. Outside, a festive figure was approaching the store. But he didn't
:19:17. > :19:20.have Christmas dinner on his mind. Suddenly, this sinister centre died
:19:21. > :19:30.in through the hatch and produced a large knife from his bag. Where's be
:19:31. > :19:34.safe? The terrified staff managed to escape, but in the office Michael
:19:35. > :19:40.was unaware of the intruder. I did hear a raised voice, I did look at
:19:41. > :19:49.the CCTV monitor, didn't see anything that was of any concern. So
:19:50. > :19:55.after that, the door did swing open. Stand-up! And then appeared this man
:19:56. > :20:00.with black tights on his head, with a centre outfit over the top.
:20:01. > :20:05.Pointing a knife at my chest, and demanding money out of the safe. He
:20:06. > :20:11.reminded me he had the knife that he wasn't afraid to use it. I did
:20:12. > :20:20.envision him stabbing me and thought that would be the end of my life,
:20:21. > :20:24.basically. Right now! With the knife just centimetres away from his body,
:20:25. > :20:29.Michael handed over the money but the man wanted more. I don't have
:20:30. > :20:32.access to the inner department, a security firm come and collect it
:20:33. > :20:36.and take it to the bank. When he realised there was no more money,
:20:37. > :20:44.the knifeman left, scattering cash as he went. Michael locked himself
:20:45. > :20:48.in the store and waited for police. It was a relief that all the doors
:20:49. > :20:58.were locked, but the adrenaline was racing. Michael and his team have
:20:59. > :21:04.been deeply affected by their ordeal. One colleague did say that
:21:05. > :21:11.she was afraid to be on her own. They were scared. The impact on the
:21:12. > :21:16.staff is massive. The fact that he was wearing a Santa suit in a way
:21:17. > :21:19.makes it worse, because the initial thoughts when the staff turn round
:21:20. > :21:23.to see it was that it was Father Christmas, but then to see him
:21:24. > :21:29.brandishing a knife, the irony of that situation sort of compound of
:21:30. > :21:34.the fear in them, I think. Despite this, Michael was back in work the
:21:35. > :21:37.very next day. We have got a very good team here, they are like a
:21:38. > :21:44.family. So I felt it was necessary to be here to support the team. But
:21:45. > :21:52.the memory of the robbery has taken its toll on him. Just very
:21:53. > :21:59.exhausted. The fact that I couldn't sleep at night. Couldn't concentrate
:22:00. > :22:05.at all at work either, and I did feel quite depressed, to be honest.
:22:06. > :22:11.What a traumatic ordeal. Just before Christmas as well. If you know
:22:12. > :22:14.anything about this robbery, please do pick up the phone.
:22:15. > :22:17.Now, throughout this series we've been covering some of the biggest
:22:18. > :22:21.From romance cons to fake job adverts and holiday scams.
:22:22. > :22:24.Well, today we're going to talk about investment fraud.
:22:25. > :22:27.And I'm delighted to welcome back to the programme for one last time
:22:28. > :22:30.Detective Inspector Katie Balls from the City of London Police's
:22:31. > :22:32.National Fraud Intelligence Bureau and Colin Smith who was targeted
:22:33. > :22:37.Welcome to both of you, Colin if I can come to you first,
:22:38. > :22:49.We got several phone calls from a company called Advanced Wealth, who
:22:50. > :22:55.were based in London. They sent me nice products -- brochures of
:22:56. > :23:00.products called Diamonds, and after if you dealing is I realised they
:23:01. > :23:05.gave us some information where the diamonds were being stored in Geneva
:23:06. > :23:10.and Dubai. We went on a bit more, then they passed me over to another
:23:11. > :23:14.person, another colleague in this company, and we did a fume or
:23:15. > :23:19.dealings, and one of the dealings went through. We sold the products,
:23:20. > :23:26.and I received about ?124,000 from them. So at this point, you thought
:23:27. > :23:29.this was a genuine investment community when a large amount of
:23:30. > :23:33.money over but you did get a massive amount of money back, so this
:23:34. > :23:37.legislative was fine. Very, very positive and didn't think any more
:23:38. > :23:42.about it. So where did it go wrong, Colin? After a couple times more I
:23:43. > :23:48.thought I would go down to London and see them at the premises. Hence,
:23:49. > :23:53.no problem at all with that, but of course it was a fraudulent
:23:54. > :23:57.transaction area, and I realised something was wrong. They even paid
:23:58. > :24:01.my expenses into my bank account, but at the end of the day I realised
:24:02. > :24:05.something had happened, and unfortunately I had lost half ?1
:24:06. > :24:10.million. That is a staggering amount of money, Colin. How did that make
:24:11. > :24:16.you feel when you realised this was in fact a huge scam? I was very
:24:17. > :24:19.frustrated, and I thought of my late mother and father, what they had
:24:20. > :24:23.done for me throughout my life, and what they had left me, some
:24:24. > :24:28.inheritance. It had just gone up in smoke. And I just feel very, very
:24:29. > :24:33.bitter about it. Completely understandable. Katie, how unusual
:24:34. > :24:39.is this type of scam, what other common trends they are using? Sadly,
:24:40. > :24:44.they are surprisingly common, so Colin is not on his own. We see in
:24:45. > :24:50.increasingly these fraudsters are pushing commodities, they are going
:24:51. > :24:53.for precious jewels, precious metals, carbon credits and forestry
:24:54. > :24:58.products, and fine wines increasingly. In terms of the scale,
:24:59. > :25:02.we see about ?1.2 billion lost every year in the UK to this type of
:25:03. > :25:07.fraud, with the average victim losing ?20,000. As we just heard, it
:25:08. > :25:10.is not just the financial loss but the terrible psychological impact
:25:11. > :25:14.they can have as well. More worryingly, we see these forces are
:25:15. > :25:20.incredibly persuasive, articulate, they have good financial knowledge
:25:21. > :25:23.and they are very credible. Websites, materials, testimonials,
:25:24. > :25:29.which make them difficult to spot. In Colin's case, they refunded some
:25:30. > :25:37.of the money, but it was still a big part of a scam. What can people do
:25:38. > :25:42.to protect themselves? Genuinely regulated companies will not be cold
:25:43. > :25:46.calling you, if they are promising you fantastic returns and
:25:47. > :25:53.downplaying any kind of risk, then it is a scam, put the phone down.
:25:54. > :25:58.Check the FCA West -- the FSA website. Six impartial financial
:25:59. > :26:04.advice from a financial adviser, and if you do suspect anything untoward,
:26:05. > :26:08.or you think it has been fraud, please report it to police. Thank
:26:09. > :26:11.you becoming in. Now back to Michelle.
:26:12. > :26:14.Now, I'm here at a state of the art training facility
:26:15. > :26:17.It's an amazing place, 17 acres crammed with rubble piles,
:26:18. > :26:20.collapsed buildings and even a fake level crossing - it's almost
:26:21. > :26:25.Exercises like the ones that happen here go on right across the UK.
:26:26. > :26:28.And we went behind the scenes with Northants Fire and Rescue
:26:29. > :26:34.to see how they would cope with a major incident.
:26:35. > :26:40.Only yesterday and American Airlines flight was evacuated at Heathrow
:26:41. > :26:48.Airport as smoke filled the plane. Luckily no one was hurt.
:26:49. > :26:56.More than 125 million people bought a flight from the UK every year. The
:26:57. > :27:03.overwhelming majority of journeys are problem free, but very
:27:04. > :27:08.occasionally things can go wrong. And as with any major incident, when
:27:09. > :27:14.the unexpected happens, all the emergency services need to be ready
:27:15. > :27:17.to work together. So today, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue
:27:18. > :27:22.Service are leading a special training exercise in a rather
:27:23. > :27:25.unusual classroom. We are looking to work with the other emergency
:27:26. > :27:31.services, police, ambulance and also St John's ambulance, and we are
:27:32. > :27:35.working with trash and college, involving an exercise of an
:27:36. > :27:39.emergency landing of a large passenger aircraft. Over the last
:27:40. > :27:46.few years we have been encouraged century to put more effort into
:27:47. > :27:48.collaborating more effectively. More than 50 college students are taking
:27:49. > :27:55.part to make the exercise as realistic as possible. Many roles
:27:56. > :28:04.are played by students studying travel and tourism, including some
:28:05. > :28:08.aspiring cabin crew. Not only to test the cabin crew, but emergency
:28:09. > :28:12.services, we have six fire appliances attending. There are
:28:13. > :28:17.about ten police staff, ten St John's ambulance. The exercise has
:28:18. > :28:22.been planned in great detail, but Mick has rigged if you surprise is
:28:23. > :28:26.on board the plane. This is a smoke generator, it does become quite
:28:27. > :28:31.scary how realistic it is. We have also got this chap down here, one of
:28:32. > :28:34.our Fire Service dummies that we have placed underneath the seat, and
:28:35. > :28:39.we have bulk of the seat back down. So the eye out -- the idea would be
:28:40. > :28:42.that the breathing apparatus crews were just be escorting, dragging,
:28:43. > :28:47.lifting people off, they will have to affect a technical rescue as
:28:48. > :28:54.well. With all the kit in place, it is time for the crew and passengers
:28:55. > :28:58.to board the plane. At this time, make sure your seats are back, tray
:28:59. > :29:03.tables are in full upright position and make sure your seat belt is
:29:04. > :29:10.fastened. As the student air stewards attend to their passengers,
:29:11. > :29:17.they are told about the problem. Senior cabin crew to the flight
:29:18. > :29:22.deck. The plane's engine has malfunctioned, and the crew must now
:29:23. > :29:25.spring into action. Attention, this is an emergency announcement, there
:29:26. > :29:30.is an engine fire on board the aircraft and we will be making an
:29:31. > :29:34.emergency landing. We urge you to remain seated and as calm as
:29:35. > :29:49.possible, Paul passengers follow further cabin crew instructions.
:29:50. > :29:58.The plane is engulfed in flames. Northants fire and rescue is called
:29:59. > :30:05.to the scene. There are many casualties in there. Watch out for
:30:06. > :30:09.falling debris on the plane. Once the scene has been assessed, station
:30:10. > :30:20.manager Jason takes charge of the situation. We have 63 passengers on
:30:21. > :30:25.board. A number have been taken off. The smoke means there is zero
:30:26. > :30:33.visibility, so the firemen must use a thermal imaging camera to search
:30:34. > :30:44.for passengers. It is then down to the medical staff to assess and
:30:45. > :30:51.treat the casualties. There is only one passenger left on board. Make's
:30:52. > :30:56.dummy casualties. Fire crews have spotted it, so carefully unbolt the
:30:57. > :31:07.seat and drag him out of the plane to safety.
:31:08. > :31:17.It is the end of the exercise and the students deliver their verdict.
:31:18. > :31:24.If you put your hand in front of your face... It was very scary. It
:31:25. > :31:28.felt like it went on for ever but it was a really good experience. It
:31:29. > :31:34.gave emergency crews are vital experience of working together on a
:31:35. > :31:40.major disaster. Today was to test command control in such an incident.
:31:41. > :31:46.It gave individuals another 292 where breathing apparatus, put
:31:47. > :31:50.aircraft procedures into place. You only have a matter of minutes before
:31:51. > :31:55.cabins are full of smoke. We are therefore when it does unfortunately
:31:56. > :31:56.go wrong. In this case, it was only a training exercise and everything
:31:57. > :32:03.went well. Well, from planes to trains,
:32:04. > :32:06.we'll be back later to see how crews here at Waddington practise rescuing
:32:07. > :32:08.people from a crashed Now, the sense of invasion after any
:32:09. > :32:14.burglary is terrible. But for one pensioner, whose home
:32:15. > :32:34.was broken into as she slept, I heard nothing. There was nothing I
:32:35. > :32:44.could do about it. It really is upsetting. 94-year-old Edith Kay
:32:45. > :32:52.lives by herself in Sutton Bonnington in Nottinghamshire. I
:32:53. > :32:56.have lived here 11 years. I only came down because my son came down
:32:57. > :33:00.here and said, I'm not leaving you alone in Scotland. He did have
:33:01. > :33:09.always found the neighbourhood friendly place. -- Edith has always
:33:10. > :33:15.found. One night back in April, her happy life took a sinister turn. I
:33:16. > :33:21.go to bed pretty early. I fell asleep that night. Outside, and
:33:22. > :33:46.uninvited visitor was lurking. Forcing open a window, the intruder
:33:47. > :33:51.cracked into Edith's bungalow. I am deaf, some I never heard nothing. As
:33:52. > :33:59.she slept, the brazen thief searched her bedroom.
:34:00. > :34:08.Before escaping through the patio door.
:34:09. > :34:20.I thought I heard footsteps. I turned round and saw nothing in the
:34:21. > :34:25.hall. I came in here and saw that somebody had been in. I went back
:34:26. > :34:29.into my room and realised they had stolen a handbag. It was in the
:34:30. > :34:36.drawer in my bedroom. I phoned the police immediately. Police,
:34:37. > :34:45.emergency. I have had a burglar. A what? A burglar. Are they still
:34:46. > :34:49.there? They entered the property while she was asleep and searched
:34:50. > :34:56.her drawers in the bedroom and taken a purse containing bank cards. The
:34:57. > :35:01.thief also took one of Edith's 's treasured possessions, a gold chain
:35:02. > :35:06.with a locket on it. It did have sentimental value because it
:35:07. > :35:11.belonged to my sister. And they got away with one more item. A tiny box,
:35:12. > :35:22.a charity box. There was nothing in it. What mentality is it to steal a
:35:23. > :35:28.charity box? Later, two men are seen on CCTV using Edith's hard to
:35:29. > :35:34.withdraw more than ?1000. I was very foolish. I had my car in it with the
:35:35. > :35:38.secret numbers. No way I would keep the numbers with my card again. At
:35:39. > :35:43.that time they were together and that is how they got the money. Two
:35:44. > :35:50.months on, the events of that night were always on Edith's mind. I feel
:35:51. > :35:54.they should be caught Achilles nobody should go through this. --
:35:55. > :35:59.because nobody. It is very upsetting.
:36:00. > :36:02.Here with me is police investigator Adam Karimjee.
:36:03. > :36:10.Adam, just talk us through the timeline of that night.
:36:11. > :36:14.We know Edith went to bed at about 9 o'clock that night,
:36:15. > :36:18.at her home in Sutton Bonington, near Loughborough.
:36:19. > :36:24.Sometime between then and around 11.20pm, at least one
:36:25. > :36:31.They selected a purse and a necklace from the handbag which was precious
:36:32. > :36:38.to her. At 11:30pm on the same night, her card was used at the ATM
:36:39. > :36:42.machine at the Co-op. An hour later, half past midnight, the card was
:36:43. > :36:49.used again to withdraw more cash from Morrisons at Loughborough. We
:36:50. > :36:57.saw CCTV of people using these sterling card. We need names for
:36:58. > :37:02.these males. If anyone does recognise them, please do get in
:37:03. > :37:08.touch. It is worth mentioning that Edith kept her PIN number with her
:37:09. > :37:13.card. She struggled to remember her PIN number. She fell into the trap
:37:14. > :37:17.of keeping up with her card. We strongly advise people against this.
:37:18. > :37:22.We would advise not to write it down at all. If you really need to write
:37:23. > :37:26.it down, keep it separate from your card. Contact your bank and they can
:37:27. > :37:29.advise you have to change the pin to something more memorable. Thank you
:37:30. > :37:34.very much. Time for Wanted Faces now
:37:35. > :37:36.starting with Jose Manico. He was due to stand trial
:37:37. > :37:38.in December last year for charges of rape,
:37:39. > :37:40.sexual assault and indecent assault The trial went ahead without him
:37:41. > :37:45.and he was found guilty and jailed Manico is 44 and has links
:37:46. > :37:48.to the West Midlands, but it's thought he may
:37:49. > :37:50.have fled abroad. You may know him though as Rico,
:37:51. > :37:57.Tribes, Lorzo Cameron, Kemar Myers Detectives want to question him
:37:58. > :38:01.about the fatal stabbing of a man at a flat in Southampton
:38:02. > :38:03.earlier this year. Suika has links to North London
:38:04. > :38:06.and Hampshire and has a scar on the right side of his face
:38:07. > :38:11.and another on the top of his head. He has a tattoo of the words "work
:38:12. > :38:14.like a slave, eat like a king" He's described as dangerous,
:38:15. > :38:17.so if you know where Detectives in Gloucestershire
:38:18. > :38:24.want to speak to him in connection to an attack in a nightclub,
:38:25. > :38:27.in which a man was slashed Cohen is 35, has a Birmingham
:38:28. > :38:30.accent, and links And finally today, this
:38:31. > :38:37.is 34-year-old Steven Bennett. He was found guilty of drug dealing
:38:38. > :38:40.at a Liverpool Crown Court in December, but didn't return
:38:41. > :38:42.for sentencing and is now Bennett is known to travel around
:38:43. > :38:47.the North West of England and has He has a scar under his right eye
:38:48. > :38:54.and another on his left wrist. If you know where any of these men
:38:55. > :38:57.are, get in touch using Tim Joyce is with me now
:38:58. > :39:04.here in Lincolnshire, where another dramatic
:39:05. > :39:06.rescue is underway. Tim, you run these disaster
:39:07. > :39:08.exercises regularly Just how realistic
:39:09. > :39:21.are these scenarios? It is very realistic. We train the
:39:22. > :39:25.person to put the core skills into place and then train people on the
:39:26. > :39:29.environment. In this case, a rail crash. The most difficult thing is
:39:30. > :39:36.putting all that together and making sure it is a dynamic scenario to
:39:37. > :39:42.train on. Of course. The guys are busy in front of us. What is the
:39:43. > :39:49.exercise? The train has been derailed after it hit two cars at
:39:50. > :39:54.the crossing. Because of this stanchion being made of hard metal,
:39:55. > :39:59.it is designed to carry power lines. It is made of a strong steel. Fire
:40:00. > :40:07.crews will struggle to cut through it. The use of hot cutting equipment
:40:08. > :40:14.cut straight through that. The users molten metal to burn through it. It
:40:15. > :40:19.works on an oxygen system passing through such a small aluminium tube.
:40:20. > :40:28.It is giving more access to get the casualties out and work along the
:40:29. > :40:34.train, as we have seen before. A really useful piece of kit.
:40:35. > :40:39.Nationally, these teams have hot cutting, the next level of equipment
:40:40. > :40:44.to deal with any major incident. Great to see. Tim, I shall head over
:40:45. > :40:48.to you. Just before I have a chat with you, it is important to note
:40:49. > :40:53.that training like this is going on across the UK. The number of cities
:40:54. > :40:57.are taking part in large-scale disaster exercises. The biggest one
:40:58. > :41:02.in Europe happened in London earlier this year. It involved a scenario
:41:03. > :41:07.where a collapsed building went on to a cheap station. There were 70
:41:08. > :41:11.organisations than 2000 volunteers involved. It costs three quarters of
:41:12. > :41:19.?1 million. The training you do here is not as expensive as as that. This
:41:20. > :41:25.is a gold standard of training. Having these scenarios for people to
:41:26. > :41:30.work on is fantastic. We have an option to use some software that
:41:31. > :41:38.allows us to recreate some of these events in the virtual world. What
:41:39. > :41:45.examples do you have? We had an incident at a farm. It was a fairly
:41:46. > :41:51.innocuous incident. It transpired there were agrochemicals and
:41:52. > :41:56.fertilisers. It turned into quite an interesting scenario. We can
:41:57. > :42:03.recreate that scenario in order for all troops to get training from that
:42:04. > :42:07.scenario. Thank you so much. It is great to see. The guys are really
:42:08. > :42:15.busy. It has been a successful mission. Back to you.
:42:16. > :42:23.Several people have been in touch about investment fraud. Company
:42:24. > :42:28.names are very similar to legitimate companies. You may have seen in the
:42:29. > :42:33.news, police officers were called about the body of Melanie Hall. Her
:42:34. > :42:37.body went missing and we had a special appeal here on the 20th
:42:38. > :42:38.anniversary of her disappearance. Please do keep any information that
:42:39. > :42:41.you may have coming in on the case. Now, Michelle, where
:42:42. > :42:46.will you be tomorrow? Rav, we're off to Birmingham
:42:47. > :42:48.where we'll be in the heart of the city centre, where police
:42:49. > :42:52.have to deal with everything from major festivals to the problems
:42:53. > :42:55.that come with a busy night time We will look at the latest
:42:56. > :43:11.distraction technique being used by the gangs
:43:12. > :43:18.targeting YOUR possessions. on today's programme,
:43:19. > :43:22.go to our website. Before we go, here's another look
:43:23. > :43:26.at this morning's wanted faces. We'll be back tomorrow morning,
:43:27. > :43:30.until then, take care.
