:01:32. > :01:38.Today we're in Salford in Greater Manchester.

:02:40. > :02:44.He was very honest. And he was a positive influence in general. If
:02:45. > :02:52.you years ahead of people, maturity wise, people looked up to him in
:02:53. > :02:58.school. In January 2008, 20-year-old Halton McCollin was gunned down in a
:02:59. > :03:03.takeaway restaurant in Manchester. Detectives believe he was the
:03:04. > :03:08.innocent victim of a tragic case of mistaken identity. Halton grew up in
:03:09. > :03:13.the Charlton area of the city. He was a talented footballer who had
:03:14. > :03:20.recently got a job, a new flat and a car. He loved football, watching and
:03:21. > :03:25.playing even more so. He was a person everybody would pick first,
:03:26. > :03:28.people wanted to be on his team because of the passion he brought
:03:29. > :03:37.into football. And the passion he brought into life. On the evening of
:03:38. > :03:41.the 19th of January 2008, Halton and friends were heading to a house
:03:42. > :03:49.party. On the way they decided to get some food from a local takeaway.
:03:50. > :03:56.On Chester Road, I'd the takeaway, each of them wanted food so they
:03:57. > :04:13.went in and began to order. -- outside the takeaway.
:04:14. > :04:20.One of the friends received a phone call from a friend of his who was
:04:21. > :04:24.sat in a carcass by in the car park of the pub. She thought she had seen
:04:25. > :04:32.a man getting out of the car with the Gaelic -- balaclava and she
:04:33. > :04:36.thought he had a gun so she walked -- award the friends that there was
:04:37. > :04:41.a serious situation about to develop and one of the friends of Halton
:04:42. > :04:45.went outside and could see two masked men approaching with what
:04:46. > :04:51.looked like deadly intent. They were very afraid. The group panicked and
:04:52. > :04:56.jumped over the counter and in attempt to hide from the gunmen.
:04:57. > :05:02.Seconds later, two masked men burst in, they fired three rounds, the
:05:03. > :05:09.fourth fleeing the scene. The devastating reality became clear.
:05:10. > :05:17.Not all of the friends had made it to safety. The worst phone call
:05:18. > :05:24.anybody could receive. They basically said, the, you need to get
:05:25. > :05:34.into Manchester, Halton has been shot. Halton had been hit in the
:05:35. > :05:38.back of the head. There was close to triple figures of people at the
:05:39. > :05:44.hospital, including family and friends. He looked at peace, like he
:05:45. > :05:50.was sleeping. I just got his hand and said, I will see you again,
:05:51. > :05:58.hopefully one day, friend. Thank you for all of the memories. Thank you
:05:59. > :06:06.for being my friend. Thank you for being my friend. Halton was in a
:06:07. > :06:10.coma for three days before the family had to make the heartbreaking
:06:11. > :06:18.decision to turn off his life-support machine. It was
:06:19. > :06:27.actually that that was keeping him. He donated his organs and he was
:06:28. > :06:31.about giving, always has been. Halton was in no way involved with
:06:32. > :06:38.any gang, he had no criminal convictions at all. This really was
:06:39. > :06:42.a completely mistaken identity case. It has been eight years since the
:06:43. > :06:47.death of Halton but we will not give up on this. His mum and dad
:06:48. > :06:52.particularly want to see justice and we want to see that also. This case
:06:53. > :07:00.will never be closed until his killers are brought to justice. What
:07:01. > :07:05.happened needs to be remembered, an innocent person, who was so loved
:07:06. > :07:15.and cared for by so many people, was taken away. I have pictures and Time
:07:16. > :07:21.stands still. You can still see that 20-year-old. But I will never see
:07:22. > :07:29.him hold. He will always have that beautiful smile. That loveliness
:07:30. > :07:40.about him. The sad thing is, I buried my son. This case is tragic.
:07:41. > :07:43.I am joined by Martin Bottomley - who is Greater Manchester Police's
:07:44. > :07:51.Halton was a hardworking young man with a bright future ahead of him.
:07:52. > :07:54.You truly believe this is a case of mistaken identity?
:07:55. > :08:03.Halton worked hard, he had a job and his own car and apartment, and great
:08:04. > :08:05.man looking forward to his life. Remind us of what
:08:06. > :08:14.happened that night? Halton and his friends were going to
:08:15. > :08:15.a party and they stopped off at the China Gardens takeaway on Chester
:08:16. > :08:18.Road. Two men wearing balaclavas
:08:19. > :08:20.approached the takeaway from the side road next
:08:21. > :08:22.to the Gorse Hill Pub .They entered the takeaway,
:08:23. > :08:25.fired three shots before leaving. One of these shots sadly
:08:26. > :08:27.hit Halton in the head What do we know about
:08:28. > :08:35.the people responsible? One man was armed and was
:08:36. > :08:38.dressed all in black. He was approximately 5 foot 11
:08:39. > :08:42.tall, of medium build. He was accompanied by another male
:08:43. > :08:49.with a balaclava, wearing a dark The hood was over the coat,
:08:50. > :08:59.with faded jeans and he was skinny. Somebody must know them, you might
:09:00. > :09:05.have been frightened at the time but please come forward. There is a

:09:10. > :09:11.are offering ?50,000 for information If you have any answers, please get
:09:12. > :09:21.in touch. Details are on the screen. Next, today's round-up
:09:22. > :09:24.of crimes caught on CCTV. Watch carefully and let us know
:09:25. > :09:28.if you recognise anyone. It's the early hours
:09:29. > :09:38.of a Tuesday morning. February of this year. Three men
:09:39. > :09:44.hanging around outside a supermarket in Surrey. The men start to move
:09:45. > :09:49.pallets and objects in front of the shop window. The trio move out of
:09:50. > :09:57.the way to make room for them gold Volvo. The car on fake numberplates
:09:58. > :10:03.gets into position then suddenly smashes through the window. Three of
:10:04. > :10:09.the masked men rush in and head for the counter. They know exactly what
:10:10. > :10:12.they want. They start chucking baskets and bending the shelters.
:10:13. > :10:16.They are here for the cigarettes. Once they have a bag full they go
:10:17. > :10:23.back to the car and leave towards bank shot and the M3. They still
:10:24. > :10:34.around three grams worth of smokes. Who are these nicotine stealing men?
:10:35. > :10:39.Collars. This CCTV captures a visitor to a house in Oxford but
:10:40. > :10:43.nobody is in and he has not invited. He still wants to get inside.
:10:44. > :10:48.Picking up rock and smashing through the window. He reaches inside but
:10:49. > :10:55.still cannot get in. He tries the door. That is not working. He leaves
:10:56. > :11:00.and goes around the other side of the house. Later, the homeowners
:11:01. > :11:06.return to find the house broken into and sentimental jewellery taken. But
:11:07. > :11:17.is this unwanted house guest? -- who is. Castor mind back to the 30th of
:11:18. > :11:21.October last year. It Halton in Ilford is about to get a couple of
:11:22. > :11:25.unwelcome visitors. They are not coming in through the door, they are
:11:26. > :11:31.dropping in through the roof. The pairs start exploring. What are they
:11:32. > :11:36.up to? They are joined around one hour later by another intruder. The
:11:37. > :11:43.next time they are spotted on camera, they are running away with a
:11:44. > :11:45.handful of goodies. It was found that about ?20,000 worth of
:11:46. > :11:47.donations and ceremonial items were missing.
:11:48. > :11:50.Do you know who this trio of temple roof raiders are?
:11:51. > :11:52.If you recognise anyone, get on the phone now.
:11:53. > :11:57.Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.
:11:58. > :12:02.Text CW, space and then your message.
:12:03. > :12:04.Texts will be charged at your standard message rate.
:12:05. > :12:15.I'm here in Salford, where there're lots of great things
:12:16. > :12:19.But it is an area that's had its fair share of
:12:20. > :12:32.Salford in Greater Manchester. An area of pride industrial heritage
:12:33. > :12:36.and recent generation. It has also been hitting the headlines for the
:12:37. > :12:41.wrong reasons. Like some other inner-city areas, Salford has had
:12:42. > :12:50.problems with gun crime and gang crime. There has been a string of
:12:51. > :12:54.serious incidents. Last July, Paul, once dubbed Mr big, was gunned down
:12:55. > :13:00.and killed. And seven-year-old Christine Hickey and his mum were
:13:01. > :13:06.shot in the legs outside their home. Police say they are cracking down,
:13:07. > :13:13.seizing weapons and disrupting organised crime. Last year in
:13:14. > :13:20.Salford, more than ?600,000 worth of drugs were seized, along with half
:13:21. > :13:22.?1 million worth of cash. -- ?500,000.
:13:23. > :13:24.Here with me now is Superintendent Mark Kenny.
:13:25. > :13:26.It's been a tough time for Salford, hasn't it?
:13:27. > :13:33.We have had a number of incidents involving firearms but we have been
:13:34. > :13:37.doing everything we can to tackle that. But that is not
:13:38. > :13:41.representative. That is a small number of people responsible for
:13:42. > :13:49.Serie A 's crime. It does not represent the good things happening
:13:50. > :13:54.here. It's not just about enforcement? We are working with our
:13:55. > :13:57.partners to tackle the causes of crime and work with young people and
:13:58. > :14:00.the community to get to the root of this and prevent it happening in the
:14:01. > :14:05.longer term. Tell me more about the piggy bank scheme? We have been
:14:06. > :14:09.taking money away from the drug dealers and those who cause harm,
:14:10. > :14:13.taking that away through the proceeds of crime act and giving it
:14:14. > :14:18.back to the community. We have taken ?38,000 from those criminals and we
:14:19. > :14:22.have said to the community, in Ackles and Salford, where should we
:14:23. > :14:37.spend this? The community have voted for these groups today and we have
:14:38. > :14:40.given them money. Let's have a look. We have got Thai boxing going on.
:14:41. > :14:44.It's something really positive for people to get involved with. They
:14:45. > :14:47.can get equipment and they can travel around Europe and they have
:14:48. > :14:54.won awards and on really well. What about the choir here? One of the
:14:55. > :14:58.local schools, they have had money to use on equipment and microphones
:14:59. > :15:01.and T-shirts and it has helped them travel around, and they've performed
:15:02. > :15:06.in local hospitals and hospices. Good for the young people on the
:15:07. > :15:11.community. Such a positive message. Finally, the bike club. Again,
:15:12. > :15:14.really good, positive work with young people and this group have
:15:15. > :15:20.worked on their bikes, and the money is being used to buy the equipment
:15:21. > :15:24.and the bike stands and young people are being trained on how to build
:15:25. > :15:30.bikes and refit them and positive activities. A real sense of
:15:31. > :15:32.community spirit here. Make sure you join me later when I speak to more
:15:33. > :15:34.people who have benefited from this. Here's what else is still
:15:35. > :15:38.to come this morning. The nighttime attack on a student,
:15:39. > :15:46.dragged into a park at knifepoint. His face looked really scary. I was
:15:47. > :15:51.really afraid. And we spend the day with the travel
:15:52. > :15:54.cops, keeping Manchester's tram But first, if you're a regular
:15:55. > :16:02.viewer you'll know that distraction Elderly and vulnerable people
:16:03. > :16:06.are often the targets, and this morning we're asking
:16:07. > :16:08.for your help to track down a particularly heartless gang
:16:09. > :16:11.which police believe is operating We'll hear from one
:16:12. > :16:15.of their victims in a moment. But first, I'm joined by PC
:16:16. > :16:35.Paul Rhys from Wiltshire Police. We have a team of three men -- three
:16:36. > :16:39.women and one man, and they followed an old woman to a bank and saw her
:16:40. > :16:45.put her number in the cash machine and followed her till they got the
:16:46. > :16:50.opportunity to steal the cashpoint card and took ?1200. The victim in
:16:51. > :16:56.this case was Doreen, and a real impact on her. As will see. It felt
:16:57. > :17:05.horrible because sometimes I wake up in the morning and I feel very
:17:06. > :17:10.nervous. I am reliving it. I do get nervous.
:17:11. > :17:12.Not surprisingly, it's had a real impact on Doreen.
:17:13. > :17:19.There is some clear CCTV of the women in this gang, isn't there?
:17:20. > :17:25.We have the females either side of Doreen she uses the cash machine,
:17:26. > :17:30.then walking away with the number. In the council offices in Swindon,
:17:31. > :17:35.the female on the ground has dropped money around her feet. That is a
:17:36. > :17:39.classic distraction. We see Doreen looking over and her bag unattended,
:17:40. > :17:43.and this is part of the gang and she was going to use that as an
:17:44. > :17:46.opportunity to steal the bag. They didn't get the contents of the bag
:17:47. > :17:49.at that stage, it was just afterwards, but you did get an image
:17:50. > :17:54.of the offender. We will see that now. This is one of the offenders
:17:55. > :18:02.after they got the card and PIN number. She is just leaving the bank
:18:03. > :18:07.in Regent Street in Swindon and she changed her appearance by wearing a
:18:08. > :18:19.scarf. She has got the ?1200. That's unbelievable. This is a bus in
:18:20. > :18:24.Derbyshire. The females are following the victim off the bus,
:18:25. > :18:29.having watched the user card and subsequently they steal her
:18:30. > :18:34.cashpoint card and get money again. A really good image of them here. We
:18:35. > :18:39.have seen both of the images and you are confident that someone will know
:18:40. > :18:42.who these people are. Absolutely. They are travelling around the
:18:43. > :18:46.Midlands, London, the South West. Somebody lives next door to them
:18:47. > :18:51.what they have been arrested and I'm sure we will get them. Please do
:18:52. > :18:53.take a good look at those photos. Do you know who these people are? If
:18:54. > :18:57.you do, please get in touch. Here in Greater Manchester
:18:58. > :18:59.they have the biggest tram But unfortunately, it does suffer
:19:00. > :19:04.from a fair amount of crime So we've been out with the police
:19:05. > :19:22.teams doing their best to keep It is a Saturday afternoon, and
:19:23. > :19:28.thousands of people are travelling around Manchester, enjoying their
:19:29. > :19:34.weekend. The travel safe units are out in force helping to keep the
:19:35. > :19:40.transport system a crime free zone. -- Travelsafe the unit. Today the
:19:41. > :19:44.kit -- team are working on the Manchester Metro line, the largest
:19:45. > :19:50.network in the UK. At Victoria Station, Stephen Delaney is
:19:51. > :19:54.expecting a busy day. The plan for the day is to work alongside the
:19:55. > :19:59.metro system as they check the tickets. Anyone that is obstructive
:20:00. > :20:02.or refuses to give details, if they give false details, anything like
:20:03. > :20:08.that, anyone who starts kicking off, we will get involved. Excuse me,
:20:09. > :20:16.pal, comment and I see your ticket? I'm just looking. You can have a
:20:17. > :20:19.chance to get him and get the ticket or you can have a standard fine.
:20:20. > :20:28.There are people who are repeat offenders. All right, mate.
:20:29. > :20:31.Straightaway they they do the shuffle, checking their pockets, and
:20:32. > :20:34.they are not going to find a ticket because they have bought one. You
:20:35. > :20:43.can spot them a mile. We have found is made. The -- we have found his
:20:44. > :20:50.mate. The man and his friend were fined ?100 each. He was going to get
:20:51. > :20:54.gay -- get away without travelling with a ticket. Some of those caught
:20:55. > :21:01.are quick to admit they didn't buy a ticket. I just got fined ?100. I
:21:02. > :21:07.can't see my girlfriend, so I will have to think of something.
:21:08. > :21:15.Sometimes passengers without tickets refuse to co-operate with the staff
:21:16. > :21:18.or do not have photo ID. That is when Stephen and his colleagues step
:21:19. > :21:24.in and use a mobile fingerprint scanner. It is linked to the police
:21:25. > :21:29.National computer and can verify somebody's identity if they are
:21:30. > :21:35.already known to police. It's a really good bit of kit. It
:21:36. > :21:39.identifies a lot of people who I wanted. And the fingerprint scanner
:21:40. > :21:43.has helped solve far bigger crimes than fare dodging. Last August was
:21:44. > :21:49.probably the best one and it sticks in my mind. At trap -- chap came up
:21:50. > :21:53.with no ticket, and he was West Yorkshire's most wanted man at the
:21:54. > :21:56.time and that was a good colour that day. The only reason we got him is
:21:57. > :22:03.because he had bought a ticket -- a good collar. The metrolink covers
:22:04. > :22:07.almost 60 miles of track and is used by 80,000 people per day. Ticket
:22:08. > :22:14.evasion is the biggest problem for the Travelsafe unit. 10,000 fixed
:22:15. > :22:18.penalties were issued last year but dealing with anti-social behaviour
:22:19. > :22:23.also keeps the team busy. Take your bag off. Stephen has a word with
:22:24. > :22:29.underage drinkers. How old are you? 15. You shouldn't be drinking. The
:22:30. > :22:33.young girl is not charged but they confiscate a bottle. Anti-social
:22:34. > :22:38.behaviour has been a big problem on the metrolink with youths causing
:22:39. > :22:42.annoyance by shouting, drinking, smoking drugs. People find it
:22:43. > :22:48.intimidating which is part of the reason we are coming round. All
:22:49. > :22:52.right, lads. See you later. If you are vulnerable, old, even if you are
:22:53. > :22:56.a young lad or girl and you go to a tram station and there are eight or
:22:57. > :23:01.nine kids, the first thing you think is, are they going to do me over? It
:23:02. > :23:05.does happen unfortunately from time to time. This is why we enjoy having
:23:06. > :23:12.this presents, getting rid of the gangs and trying to make it safer
:23:13. > :23:16.for everybody. Assaults and robbery on the trams in Manchester on the
:23:17. > :23:20.rise. In response, Metrolink say they want to boost the number of
:23:21. > :23:27.Travelsafe offices riding the rails. Would you like to wear it? There you
:23:28. > :23:32.go. People get robbed on the tram. I have seen two fights, all kinds of
:23:33. > :23:39.stuff. It's not good. It makes you feel so. I feel better, no one can
:23:40. > :23:46.harass me, touch me or frighten me. So it's really good. Back at
:23:47. > :23:49.Victoria Station, another fare dodger has caught Stephen's I, but
:23:50. > :23:55.he senses he is hiding something else. Keep your hands up so I can
:23:56. > :24:00.see them. Section 23, Michu some drugs act, I will search you because

:26:20. > :26:25.in Salford where the police have taken money they've seized
:26:26. > :26:28.from organised crime and put it right back into the communities.
:26:29. > :26:30.One of the projects benefitting from the money is Dad's Shed.
:26:31. > :26:43.We have been here about a year, and as you can see, I have spent most of
:26:44. > :26:47.the time putting the floor down, getting things ready and making it
:26:48. > :26:51.into a workable workshop. The money has been a great help and I've got a
:26:52. > :26:56.very good local company who are very generous with donating their waste
:26:57. > :27:00.material. What do you do here and what type of people come? It is an
:27:01. > :27:07.old-fashioned woodworking shop. No agenda. If you are at a loss, you
:27:08. > :27:09.come along here and within four -- short space of time you will be
:27:10. > :27:14.making something you never dreamt you could make. It starts with
:27:15. > :27:19.something simple like a bird house. But people do get ambitious quickly
:27:20. > :27:22.and it gives them a lot of self-confidence. Tell me more about
:27:23. > :27:27.the area and have a project benefits it. It's a deprived area with a lot
:27:28. > :27:32.of broken marriages, that sort of thing. We get people referred to us
:27:33. > :27:36.by the health service and doctors who have what they call mental
:27:37. > :27:39.health problems but basically it is confidence. Especially for guys
:27:40. > :27:44.coming here, amongst their peer group, and we have the cafe open so
:27:45. > :27:49.they can get a hot meal. They tend to open up a bit so that is nice. To

:28:00. > :28:07.me more about your experience and what you get out of it. I started
:28:08. > :28:13.off with the Salford Dad 's well-being group, and from there I
:28:14. > :28:20.got involved with Dad's Shed. Just learning how to do things. My late

:28:32. > :28:35.dad, I brought that here and I've been able to do that and work on it.
:28:36. > :28:42.This has really given new confidence as well. It has. It has stopped me
:28:43. > :28:45.from going back into crime because I have had a chequered past, and
:28:46. > :28:49.something like this has helped to give me a focus. Anthony, that is
:28:50. > :28:52.great to hear. Thank you very much. Next, the police here
:28:53. > :28:55.need your help to track down a man who attacked a student
:28:56. > :29:04.back in December. Manchester, a bustling city with
:29:05. > :29:14.four universities and around 100,000 students. Jenny had just finished
:29:15. > :29:17.her first term. What are you doing after this? I had lots of friends in
:29:18. > :29:21.Manchester and I really enjoyed the course. When I finish that
:29:22. > :29:29.university I would normally meet friends, go to the gym, that sort of
:29:30. > :29:33.thing. I had a fun time. in great before Christmas last year, Jenny
:29:34. > :29:39.spent the evening with her front. We were just channelling that, watching
:29:40. > :29:45.TV, that sort of thing. I stayed for around four hours. At around
:29:46. > :30:04.midnight, Jenny decided to head home. I like working so I wanted to
:30:05. > :30:08.walk home. -- walking. I did not think Salford was a violent place. I
:30:09. > :30:16.used to walk around by myself a lot. I am not a person who is afraid of
:30:17. > :30:26.strangers and things. When I was near a park, a man suddenly said,
:30:27. > :30:33.hey... Then he took out a knife. I went into my pocket and got my
:30:34. > :30:37.wallet and gave him all of my coins. The man began to drag her towards
:30:38. > :30:42.the park. I was wearing a coat at the time. He was grabbing the code
:30:43. > :30:47.so I was trying to take it off to run away. I took it off and just
:30:48. > :30:52.ran. But she fell and the man caught up with her. After that, his eyes
:30:53. > :30:58.changed. They were crazy, creepy eyes. He had changed and had become
:30:59. > :31:06.very violent. I said, please... And no. In desperation, Jenny tried to
:31:07. > :31:11.phone her friend. I took my phone out of my pocket. I did get through
:31:12. > :31:17.to my friend but the man saw that I was calling someone so he took my
:31:18. > :31:21.phone off me. I think he tried to say, are you trying to call someone?
:31:22. > :31:26.But he did not speaking is properly. He was kissing me on the cheek and
:31:27. > :31:32.kept -- I kept avoiding it and pushing him away. After that, he hit
:31:33. > :31:37.me in the face, on my cheek, and slapped me. It really hurt. I was
:31:38. > :31:43.trying to get him to come down but his objective, his aim was to rape
:31:44. > :31:47.me. He was trying to drag me into another park which had lots of
:31:48. > :31:53.trees. It was fenced off so others could not get in but I held the
:31:54. > :31:56.fence so that I would not go. As you tried to fight off attacker, a car
:31:57. > :32:02.pulled up next to them. He suddenly run away. The man in the car came
:32:03. > :32:11.out and asked what had happened. I said he was going to rape me. I was
:32:12. > :32:18.crying. It made me not go out alone for the first ten days. Sometimes my
:32:19. > :32:22.heart flutters and beats really fast when I go outside. In the
:32:23. > :32:28.night-time, when I see men walking along, I am afraid. I find it creepy
:32:29. > :32:32.that he is still out there because he could do this to other girls. If
:32:33. > :32:35.the police caught him, I would be so happy.
:32:36. > :32:40.With me now is DI Kenneth Blain from the Greater Manchester Police.
:32:41. > :32:42.Kenneth, what do you know about the attacker?
:32:43. > :32:48.We've been able to put together an e-fit of the attacker.
:32:49. > :32:55.He's described as a white male, 5'7 tall, skinny build, 28 -
:32:56. > :32:59.30 years old, black short hair with a black moustache and had
:33:00. > :33:03.a distinctive earring and ear piercing in the top of right ear,
:33:04. > :33:06.which we have an example of here.
:33:07. > :33:15.The victim was walking home via Salford Central Station,
:33:16. > :33:25.Across Bloom Street. The attacker grabbed her. He pointed the knife at
:33:26. > :33:28.her and dragged her into a small park of Lamb Lane and subjected her
:33:29. > :33:33.to a vicious assault, monster in the face, before sexually assaulting her
:33:34. > :33:37.and that only stopped when a motorist intervened. It is shocking
:33:38. > :33:42.and you have more details on the knife? It is ascribed as very small
:33:43. > :33:45.with a retractable blade of the blade was not showing during the
:33:46. > :33:51.attack. And the phone was stolen? That was a white iPhone 5. We are
:33:52. > :33:56.keen to know if anybody has had that type of phone offered to them in the
:33:57. > :34:01.local area in the last couple of months or if anybody has find that
:34:02. > :34:05.type of phone. And we're keen to see if anybody can feed as this
:34:06. > :34:07.attacker. This has shaken the attacker, she was really scared
:34:08. > :34:12.during this and has been badly affected. Thank you very much. You
:34:13. > :34:16.know what to do if you have information. Please get in touch.
:34:17. > :34:20.Now if you saw a crime unfolding in front of your eyes,
:34:21. > :34:23.Many people, understandably, might run in the opposite direction.
:34:24. > :34:25.But others decide to take action and even apprehend
:34:26. > :34:29.It's known as a Citizens Arrest, but what does that really mean,
:34:30. > :34:32.Well, someone who's actually performed
:34:33. > :34:35.a Citizen's Arrest is postman Simon McCluskey, from Hinderwell
:34:36. > :34:37.in North Yorkshire, and I'm also joined by barrister
:34:38. > :34:54.Last August I was driving past the post office in my van and I could
:34:55. > :34:59.see two men running out in balaclavas and I thought that was a
:35:00. > :35:04.bit odd and I saw the postmaster, not for that was a robbery so I
:35:05. > :35:08.followed one of them with another member of the public and we caught
:35:09. > :35:12.him and with the help of a farmer who jumped out with his combine
:35:13. > :35:17.harvester, we managed to taken to the ground and told him. We detained
:35:18. > :35:22.him for the police? These men were arrested and charged and convicted
:35:23. > :35:27.and it was Joseph Crosby and Andrew Waldron and collectively, they got
:35:28. > :35:33.17 years in prison, a fantastic result for the attempted robbery.
:35:34. > :35:39.That was brilliant. What you did, you didn't expect it would be that
:35:40. > :35:49.serious. Rupert, from the legal standpoint... You did get a reward?
:35:50. > :35:52.That busy at the back! Yes, we got awarded a commendation by the high
:35:53. > :35:58.Sheriff. It was a good day out! Fantastic. I want to ask about the
:35:59. > :36:04.legal point of view, where do we stand? What can we do in
:36:05. > :36:08.circumstances like this? It does not always end as successfully as in
:36:09. > :36:12.this case which is why the police did not encourage people to commit a
:36:13. > :36:16.citizen's arrest. You can break the law if you unlawfully detain
:36:17. > :36:20.somebody but if you consider a serious crime is being committed,
:36:21. > :36:26.someone is running from a post office wearing a balaclava, you
:36:27. > :36:30.could likely think it was serious and can use proportionate force to
:36:31. > :36:35.detain someone for as long as is practical for the police to arrive.
:36:36. > :36:38.If you see somebody throwing away a cigarette, you cannot beat them over
:36:39. > :36:44.the head and lock them up in your bedroom. You must be careful. It is
:36:45. > :36:49.the proportional element? Don't overstep the mark! Having held this
:36:50. > :36:53.gentleman to the ground in his balaclava, Simon was right not to
:36:54. > :37:00.beat him up until the police arrived. You have to be careful.
:37:01. > :37:03.These alleged criminals could turn around and lie about what you were
:37:04. > :37:08.doing so you have to be very careful not to put yourself into any
:37:09. > :37:12.position of harm. You are not a vigilante, you cannot dish out
:37:13. > :37:20.punishment. That is up to the police. In the case of Simon, he
:37:21. > :37:24.could detain the criminals until the police arrived. That is it,
:37:25. > :37:28.containing the situation and not using excessive force and only
:37:29. > :37:31.acting when safe to do so. Well done, Simon. Fascinating stuff. Back
:37:32. > :37:34.to Michelle. Next, it started as a casual
:37:35. > :37:37.night out for a group of young friends in Preston,
:37:38. > :37:50.but it ended in senseless violence. It has affected me, it is terrible.
:37:51. > :38:01.It is scary to not remember something so dramatic. 19-year-old
:38:02. > :38:06.Sam Sheridan is on a gap year before starting university. One evening in
:38:07. > :38:13.April, he was enjoying a night out with friends in Preston. My birthday
:38:14. > :38:22.was coming up so I thought I would go out. We talked about our
:38:23. > :38:26.different lives, catching up. The friends spent the evening at a
:38:27. > :38:35.nightclub. Then they decided to come. -- walk on. Taking a short cut
:38:36. > :38:43.through an alleyway, they passed two men. We were just walking past. The
:38:44. > :38:54.men approached Sam and his friends. Without warning, one of them became
:38:55. > :39:00.aggressive. One of them chased me. And just punched me. He punched me
:39:01. > :39:07.once on one side and once on the other side. Then I was on the floor.
:39:08. > :39:13.The brutal attack was captured on CCTV. Sam suffered a broken
:39:14. > :39:22.cheekbone and serious injuries to his eye. For no reason, he has
:39:23. > :39:24.ruined my birthday, injured knee, done all these things and for what?
:39:25. > :39:29.I just want to know why. Lancashire Constabulary,
:39:30. > :39:34.Sam seems like such a nice lad. You think this attack
:39:35. > :39:45.was completely unprovoked? Yes, it appears so. Just a nasty
:39:46. > :39:53.assault that did not appear to have any routes. Remind us of what
:39:54. > :40:00.happened. The victim was out for his birthday and left the net ties --
:40:01. > :40:06.nightclub at 2:30am in the morning and went down the alleyway back
:40:07. > :40:15.towards Church Street to get a taxi. They did not make the taxi. Whilst
:40:16. > :40:18.working at the alleyway, two males encounter them and one of them
:40:19. > :40:22.punched him twice on the head which caused fall unconscious and the
:40:23. > :40:31.other males came back in the other direction. What else do we know?
:40:32. > :40:34.We're looking for a white male, in his late teens/early twenties,
:40:35. > :40:36.of chubby build and around 5ft 8in/ 5ft 9in tall.
:40:37. > :40:39.He had dark brown wavy hair which was held back in a head band
:40:40. > :40:44.He was clean-shaven and was wearing a long sleeved black shirt with dark
:40:45. > :40:47.The second man is described as white, of slim build,
:40:48. > :40:53.around 5ft 8in with short shaven hair.
:40:54. > :41:04.He was wearing a T-shirt and jeans. Sam received bad injuries? Yes, a
:41:05. > :41:07.fractured cheekbone, close to his eye, it required an operation and
:41:08. > :41:12.was concerned that he might lose his sight but fortunately, that did not
:41:13. > :41:14.happen on the does have a lack of sensation in his face. Thank you
:41:15. > :41:17.very much. Back to you. Just time for an update
:41:18. > :41:28.on what's come In on the phones and after was a
:41:29. > :41:32.victim of a distraction burglary in Merseyside and officers are looking
:41:33. > :41:36.at new leads as a result of your calls. And on Monday, we should you
:41:37. > :41:41.the case of former pub landlady Carol Mitchell who was held at
:41:42. > :41:46.gunpoint in her home and was promising information on that. Back
:41:47. > :41:49.to Michelle in Salford. It looks like you're having a lovely time!
:41:50. > :41:51.Yes Rav, there's very much a village fete
:41:52. > :41:56.These are some more of the groups which have benefitted from the cash
:41:57. > :41:57.pot which is really great to see.
:41:58. > :42:03.How has it helped you? To buy equipment to allow the children to
:42:04. > :42:08.complete the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, sleeping bags to complete
:42:09. > :42:13.our own expeditions. Somebody from the Morris dancing group. It has
:42:14. > :42:18.helped us get the outfits that we wear for the competitions and we
