:00:07. > :00:13.Tonight, the full inside story of the Jeilan are Yeates murder

:00:13. > :00:17.investigation from the detectives to solve it. -- Joanna Yeates.

:00:17. > :00:21.is one of those investigations where it just gripped you from the

:00:21. > :00:26.start. He was telling me things that he had and told me on previous

:00:26. > :00:30.conversations, which I thought was odd. I had a very strong gut

:00:30. > :00:35.feeling that something wasn't right. And in an exclusive interview with

:00:36. > :00:39.Crimewatch, Jo's parents describe the terrible moment when they heard

:00:39. > :00:44.their daughter's body had been found. She was dumped there like a

:00:44. > :00:52.piece of garbage. That is where my daughter was last. I was thinking

:00:52. > :00:55.why? There seemed to be no reason to it. You know these birds which

:00:56. > :01:00.run along the ground and work so hard and take to the air flying,

:01:00. > :01:10.that is my amazing daughter. She'd just taken off and somebody shot

:01:10. > :01:27.

:01:27. > :01:32.Hello and welcome to Crimewatch. The murder of Joanna Yeates just

:01:32. > :01:36.before Christmas last year grip to the nation. Tonight, for the first

:01:36. > :01:40.time, the police speak candidly about how they caught her killer,

:01:40. > :01:45.Vincent Tabak. And we hear first hand what it was like for Jo's

:01:45. > :01:49.family to be at the centre of that huge media storm. First, let's take

:01:49. > :01:52.a look ahead at tonight's main appeals. The Wild West style shoot-

:01:52. > :02:00.out that killed an innocent man as he was on the phone to his

:02:00. > :02:04.girlfriend. Rico! It just cut out so I thought he'd may be dropped

:02:04. > :02:09.his phone and the batteries were broken, that's why they can't get

:02:09. > :02:15.through to him. I wished that the phone conversation we had was more,

:02:15. > :02:18.a better conversation. Can you name that the man responsible? The

:02:19. > :02:22.detectives in the studio also want to know whether a newborn baby

:02:22. > :02:28.found dead in Kirkham, Lancashire, just a few weeks ago, had been

:02:28. > :02:32.killed. He was discovered in a stream wearing this little top, and

:02:32. > :02:36.identical topped this one. We will have excellent news later on cases

:02:36. > :02:40.solved thanks to your course. they include several arrests as a

:02:40. > :02:45.result of our last programme. A five-year sentence for this thug,

:02:45. > :02:52.found guilty of a slashing a Dorman in the face so brutally he required

:02:52. > :02:56.50 stitches. And there are lots of new wanted faces on CCTV. We have

:02:56. > :03:01.people wanted for murder and armed robbery, and this bright spark who

:03:01. > :03:04.was callous enough to burgle a cancer charity shop. We will also

:03:04. > :03:08.have a reconstruction of an appalling case of mistaken identity

:03:08. > :03:13.in which a 14-year-old boy was kneecapped as he answered a knock

:03:13. > :03:23.at his front door. That evening I was just on the computer, my sister

:03:23. > :03:24.

:03:24. > :03:28.was watching some TV. Basically a normal night for us. And can you

:03:28. > :03:31.identify this man? He is believed to have planted suspect devices in

:03:31. > :03:37.Canterbury. Neither exploded but police urgently need to find him

:03:37. > :03:41.before he tries again. But we start tonight with the truly shocking

:03:41. > :03:45.murder of a young man this summer. It happened exactly four months ago

:03:45. > :03:49.when a day of celebration at the St Paul's Carnival in Bristol

:03:49. > :03:53.culminated in a terrifying gunfight in the middle of a busy street. The

:03:53. > :04:03.revellers gunman hit several innocent bystanders, including this

:04:03. > :04:14.

:04:14. > :04:19.Gunfights between gangs on our streets are thankfully incredibly

:04:19. > :04:25.rare. But when they do happen at the consequences can be

:04:25. > :04:30.indiscriminate and devastating. In July, 21-year-old Rico Gordon, a

:04:31. > :04:40.completely innocent man, was shot dead here, caught in the crossfire

:04:41. > :04:45.

:04:45. > :04:49.when two rival gangs from London Everybody loved him. He made

:04:49. > :04:56.everybody smile, everybody happy. People loved being around him. You

:04:56. > :05:01.felt privileged when he was around because he was so special. His

:05:01. > :05:06.smile would light up the room. He was against any kind of violence,

:05:06. > :05:10.he didn't like it. If there would be a fight or something, he would

:05:10. > :05:14.be the first person to walk away. He was the nicest person I've ever

:05:14. > :05:19.met. The first person I'd think about when I'd wake up, the last

:05:19. > :05:27.person I'd speak to when I went to bed. He made you smile if you were

:05:27. > :05:31.feeling sad. Even though I was in Bristol and he was in London, I

:05:31. > :05:40.don't know, it kind of made things better because when we did see each

:05:40. > :05:44.other we did appreciate each other a lot more. On Saturday 2nd July,

:05:44. > :05:53.the St Paul's Carnival in Bristol was in full swing. Rico travelled

:05:53. > :06:01.down to see my and enjoy the festivities. Are you all right?

:06:01. > :06:08.so good to see you. So happy, my friends loved him. I'm going to go

:06:08. > :06:13.now. OK. You guys have fun. I'll give you a call later. I was saying,

:06:13. > :06:18.I'm going off with my friends and I will call you later and made. Any

:06:18. > :06:22.he planned to go out after. Rico spent the rest of the evening with

:06:22. > :06:27.a group of his friends, also in town for the carnival. Some of them

:06:27. > :06:32.had connections to a London gang. The whole group ended up at this

:06:32. > :06:39.pub in the eastern area of Bristol. It is here that the police think

:06:39. > :06:43.that trouble began. The pub had stayed open late for post carnival

:06:43. > :06:52.partygoers. But at around 3:40am, a confrontation broke out between two

:06:52. > :06:57.men, possibly members of the rival gangs. Rico didn't like the tense

:06:57. > :07:02.atmosphere in the pub and decided to leave. Shortly afterwards, a

:07:02. > :07:09.group of 16 men also left the pub and got into their cars. But they

:07:09. > :07:14.weren't going home. In convoy, they drive up Stapleton Road, past Rico

:07:14. > :07:20.and his friends and decide to circle the area, turning left into

:07:20. > :07:23.St Mark's Road. Minutes later, the sixth car convoy is back. They park

:07:23. > :07:30.up, blocking the entrance to Berwick Road, and some head on foot

:07:30. > :07:36.to where's Rico's group of friends are stood chatting. I remember

:07:36. > :07:40.calling him and setting, where are you now? I've called the taxi, it's

:07:40. > :07:47.on its way. He said, I'm coming. I said if you are not here soon I'm

:07:47. > :07:51.going to go to sleep. Then it kind of just cut out. As the group

:07:51. > :08:01.approaches, a shot is fired at them from the other side of the road.

:08:01. > :08:09.

:08:10. > :08:19.Sparking a gun battle. Rico! Over An innocent passer-by gets hit in

:08:19. > :08:24.the leg. But the bullet that hits Rico is fatal. I thought that maybe

:08:24. > :08:29.he'd dropped his phone. I heard a kind of bank but it could have been

:08:29. > :08:34.the phone falling on the floor. He was speaking and then it was kind

:08:34. > :08:37.of, like... You know when you can't finish a sentence? Then it cut out

:08:37. > :08:41.and I thought he had dropped his own and the battery was broken,

:08:41. > :08:47.that's why I can't get through to him. I kept calling after and it

:08:47. > :08:51.just went straight to answer machine. I wished that the phone

:08:51. > :08:56.conversation we had was more... I don't know, a better last

:08:56. > :09:01.conversation. Rico was killed by a single bullet which hit the

:09:01. > :09:07.pavement and ricocheted up into the back of his head. He didn't stand a

:09:07. > :09:12.chance. Detective Superintendent at Sue Scott is now determined to find

:09:12. > :09:16.his killers. We know there were a lot of people around. It would have

:09:16. > :09:20.been very busy. The people in the street at the time would have seen

:09:20. > :09:25.gunmen firing lots of shots. They would have seen one of the gunmen

:09:25. > :09:29.zig-zagging up the road behind us. You think they remained in the area

:09:29. > :09:33.whilst the police and ambulance service are still here at the crime

:09:33. > :09:36.scene. That's right. One of those vehicles in the convoy was driving

:09:36. > :09:43.around the backstreets here at the same time the emergency services

:09:43. > :09:48.were desperately trying to save Rico's life. You think it gets

:09:48. > :09:53.easier but it doesn't. It gets a lot worse because now you are

:09:53. > :09:57.realising he is not there. You're just a missing him more and more.

:09:57. > :10:01.Every day it gets harder. I think the worst thing is not having

:10:01. > :10:05.someone that you can tell everything. I don't know, I feel

:10:05. > :10:15.like the main part of my life is missing, it isn't easily filled.

:10:15. > :10:20.It's changed all of us. It's like we are all broken. I am just peeing

:10:20. > :10:30.for anyone who knows anything to come forward. - that I am just

:10:30. > :10:33.begging for anyone who knows Clearly the family are devastated.

:10:33. > :10:39.It is very important to let people know that this was a totally

:10:39. > :10:44.innocent young man. Yes, Rico was not connected to gangs whatsoever.

:10:44. > :10:48.He was totally innocent. His family are devastated about this loss.

:10:48. > :10:53.lot of drama on the streets at night. There was this convoy of six

:10:53. > :10:59.cars, what more can you tell us? You can see the convoy is going in

:10:59. > :11:04.and around the area. It's from that convoy later on that two about --

:11:04. > :11:07.two of our gunmen have come from. We are interested in a dark blue

:11:07. > :11:12.Alfa-Romeo. During the incident, the front passenger window was shot

:11:12. > :11:17.out. We believe that between the third and 6th July that the window

:11:17. > :11:20.was replaced. They want to speak to the person who replaced that window.

:11:20. > :11:24.What do you know about the guns? There were three guns involved.

:11:24. > :11:28.Handguns. We know they are hidden somewhere and we want to find them.

:11:28. > :11:31.Please somebody phone in and tell us where we can find them. Lots of

:11:31. > :11:36.people were on the streets at night, presumably you are still trying to

:11:36. > :11:39.trace witnesses. We are. There are three key witnesses I'd like to

:11:39. > :11:43.trace who were in the coach house that night. One of which was a man

:11:43. > :11:48.who we can see you with a long- sleeved white shirt on. We like to

:11:48. > :11:51.speak to him. A man in a blue Adidas tracksuit. And the lady in a

:11:51. > :11:54.still photograph there. Any witnesses who might be thinking

:11:54. > :11:58.about phoning in, we understand you might be scared. There is a range

:11:58. > :12:01.of measures we can put in place to make sure that we can protect you,

:12:02. > :12:06.but I'd urge you to phone us. violence can make people worried

:12:06. > :12:11.but you can reassure them that you deal with them very sensibly. It

:12:11. > :12:18.you know anything, please do speak to the detectives here now. The

:12:18. > :12:22.number is on screen. You can call anonymously on the number on screen

:12:22. > :12:27.but Crimewatch -- Crimestoppers. We now have a collection of wanted

:12:27. > :12:30.faces. First tonight is this man. Karl Michael O'Hare. The 29-year-

:12:30. > :12:36.old was wanted in connection with the murder of his father and the

:12:36. > :12:39.attempted murder of his mother, in Liverpool in 2002. He skipped bail

:12:39. > :12:43.in January 2003 and hasn't been seen since. This is an old photo of

:12:43. > :12:47.him but he will still have this Prom and scar under his nose as the

:12:47. > :12:53.result of a harelip. He should not be approached. Call the police if

:12:53. > :12:56.you no way he is. No. Two is Abdi Karim Ismail. He is wanted for his

:12:56. > :13:01.serious sexual assault of a teenager in Cardiff in December

:13:01. > :13:06.last year. The 38-year-old, who has previously worked as a taxi driver,

:13:06. > :13:10.as links to South Wales, London and Northampton. Number three is

:13:10. > :13:13.Alexander Abimbola. He is wanted for dangerous driving and fraud, in

:13:13. > :13:18.connection with a traffic collision which left the victim paralysed

:13:18. > :13:22.from the neck down. Police believe 40-year-old Abimbola, who regularly

:13:22. > :13:28.attends church, may be working as a career. He has links to south-east

:13:28. > :13:31.London and Nigeria. Next is Graham Benjamin Phillips, previously known

:13:31. > :13:34.as Malcolm Cook. The 51-year-old register of sex offender is wanted

:13:34. > :13:38.in connection with the possession and importation of indecent images

:13:39. > :13:44.of children. Phillips, originally from heart picture, has links to

:13:44. > :13:49.Belgium, Cyprus and Germany. All of tonight's The Wanted faces are on

:13:49. > :13:59.the website. If you know where they are, you can call the number on

:13:59. > :14:00.

:14:00. > :14:04.It is time now for some of dates on cases we featured previously.

:14:04. > :14:07.start with news of an appeal from our last programme. The rape of a

:14:07. > :14:14.young woman who was trying to make her way home after a night out in

:14:14. > :14:20.Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire in July. Do you know where I can get a

:14:20. > :14:24.taxi from here? Just a few days after the broadcast, a 23-year-old

:14:24. > :14:28.man from Waltham Cross was arrested on suspicion of rape and is

:14:28. > :14:33.currently on police bail. We will keep you informed of how the case

:14:33. > :14:36.progresses. Next, a man we featured twice on the programme. This is

:14:36. > :14:41.Muhammad Ali eat, who officers from South Wales were keen to speak to

:14:41. > :14:46.in connection with the murder of teenager Amir Siddiqui in Cardiff

:14:46. > :14:51.in April 2010. Last month, he was located and arrested in India.

:14:51. > :14:55.Police are now seeking his extradition to the UK. And the

:14:55. > :14:58.latest on a case from a decade ago. A teenage couple were walking along

:14:58. > :15:01.the towpath in Salisbury when they were approached by a man who

:15:01. > :15:05.threatened them with a gun and subjected the young woman to a

:15:05. > :15:08.serious sexual assault. In September, a 57-year-old man from

:15:08. > :15:12.Salisbury was arrested and charged with false imprisonment and

:15:12. > :15:22.indecent assault, as well as firearms offences. He is due in

:15:22. > :15:24.

:15:24. > :15:28.A very sad story, in which all of these items may hold the key to the

:15:28. > :15:38.death of a newborn baby, a little boy, whose body was found in

:15:38. > :15:42.

:15:42. > :15:49.Be very sad case, tell me more. very sad case indeed, a couple were

:15:49. > :15:55.walking their dog in Kirkham, around 2pm on the first October,

:15:55. > :16:01.and they found the body of a small child, a baby boy, in a Shireen.

:16:01. > :16:07.The shrimp is known as Spen Brook, off Car Lane. What did you know

:16:07. > :16:13.about how he died? We do not know a great deal. He is a full-term child,

:16:13. > :16:17.white, it was not premature. Because of the poor condition, we

:16:17. > :16:22.do not know a lot more, and that is why we are appealing for help.

:16:23. > :16:30.said it was items that would hold the key to how and why he died.

:16:30. > :16:36.Let's go through them. It is such a tiny think, a baby jacket. Yes,

:16:36. > :16:42.this is what he was wearing at the time. We have ascertained it is

:16:42. > :16:51.from ASDA. It was sold as part of the autumn/winter range in

:16:51. > :16:59.2008/2009. It has that cartoon character above the pocket. There

:16:59. > :17:05.was a been backed? Yes, near where he was found, there was a dustbin

:17:05. > :17:14.bag, Blackpool Council. Intertwined, two tiles, Adrian Renaissance style

:17:14. > :17:20.and a Union Jack towel. These items are common. Individually, they

:17:20. > :17:26.ought not -- they are not of great importance, but people could lead

:17:26. > :17:33.them together. It is the jigsaw. What is the other piece of the

:17:33. > :17:40.jigsaw? We found the remnants of a cardboard box. It is a shoe box. It

:17:40. > :17:44.is from Evans. It is quite large. It is these shoes, size five. If

:17:44. > :17:49.anybody can put them together with the other items, it is important

:17:49. > :17:55.they come forward. You do not know how it was that the baby came to be

:17:55. > :18:00.in deep stream? It could be a serious crime, but it is a tragedy,

:18:01. > :18:05.or whatever has happened. The mother is in need of help. We want

:18:05. > :18:12.her to come forward, and we will give her support. But we need to

:18:12. > :18:20.note what happened to that child. Maybe you are the mother, or the

:18:20. > :18:29.father. Did you see anything? If you would rather speak to female

:18:30. > :18:36.officers, just ask. Or, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously. It

:18:36. > :18:41.is time for some CCTV. We start in Liverpool.

:18:41. > :18:46.It is the early hours of Tuesday morning in April at a supermarket

:18:46. > :18:51.in Bootle. A security guard weights. Little does he know that outside

:18:51. > :18:56.his colleague has been ambushed. The attackers forced their way into

:18:56. > :19:02.the vault, pulling the other got with them. They threatened the

:19:02. > :19:06.guards with a gun and a piece of wood. They then made off with

:19:06. > :19:15.several thousand pounds. You cannot see their faces, but somebody knows

:19:16. > :19:22.two they are. -- who they are. More footage from April, this time, in a

:19:22. > :19:27.bog in Warrington. It is just after midnight. One man takes offence as

:19:27. > :19:37.a fellow punter tries to get past him. Without saying a word, he had

:19:37. > :19:38.

:19:38. > :19:46.put him. The victim needed stitches and is permanently stuck -- Scott.

:19:46. > :19:50.Police name him. -- police named him. Inside the cancer research

:19:50. > :19:56.charity shop in North Yorkshire, during the early hours of Thursday

:19:56. > :20:01.in May, a man wearing a paper suit has broken in. He is not looking

:20:01. > :20:09.for a bargain or to make a donation. He clearly likes a rummage. Unlike

:20:09. > :20:16.his torch, he is not too bright. Hello! He stole money and watches

:20:16. > :20:22.donated to support a charity. Disgusting. Tell us who he is.

:20:22. > :20:32.That footage is all on the website, and if you know who any of them are,

:20:32. > :20:34.

:20:34. > :20:39.It's horrible murder that you cannot fail to have heard about,

:20:39. > :20:44.July the Yates, she was a landscape architect who lived happily in

:20:44. > :20:48.Bristol, with her boyfriend. That was until just before Christmas,

:20:48. > :20:52.when she was strangled in her flat by her neighbour, Vincent Tabak

:20:52. > :20:56.couple stop in the light of his conviction, we can now bring you

:20:56. > :21:06.the full story of what happened. And for the first time, we could

:21:06. > :21:31.

:21:31. > :21:41.The disappearance of Joanna Yeates just a week before Christmas

:21:41. > :21:47.devastated the family. She had a brightness about her. She was

:21:47. > :21:55.always very happy-go-lucky, she always had time for everyone.

:21:55. > :22:00.liked outdoor things, outdoor life. She was going to be a real success.

:22:00. > :22:05.She had sport, interests, a great boyfriend, everything was there.

:22:05. > :22:15.They had been going out for two years, and they were coming home

:22:15. > :22:19.

:22:19. > :22:27.for Christmas? Yes, we were excited about it. She was making mince pies.

:22:27. > :22:32.Time has just stopped from that night. She was 25 and had

:22:32. > :22:36.everything going for her. She was beautiful, talented, and has

:22:36. > :22:41.settled in Bristol, up working as a landscape architect. She was living

:22:41. > :22:51.happily with her boyfriend until, up one night in December, when she

:22:51. > :22:54.

:22:54. > :22:59.The investigation began on 19th December, when police received a

:22:59. > :23:05.call from her boyfriend. On the Sunday evening, he returned from

:23:05. > :23:10.his weekend away in Sheffield. There was no trace of her in the

:23:10. > :23:14.flat. Gradually, he started to piece things together that he

:23:14. > :23:19.thought were unusual. When he called her number, he could hear

:23:19. > :23:25.her telephone ringing in the flat. As time progressed, he got

:23:25. > :23:29.increasingly concerned. He eventually phoned the police.

:23:29. > :23:34.circumstances as they were reported, as I read them, they automatically

:23:34. > :23:42.lead me to feel that, with this missing person, there was something

:23:42. > :23:46.wrong. A missing persons inquiry was launched, detectives were

:23:46. > :23:51.looking for anything that might point them towards her. They had

:23:51. > :23:57.very little to go on. Which of exhausting every opportunity and

:23:58. > :24:02.every resource to find her. We need some help. Inside the flat, there

:24:02. > :24:05.were a few potential leads. One of them was a Tesco receipt for a

:24:06. > :24:10.pizza she had bought on the Friday night, two days earlier. The

:24:10. > :24:14.receipt had been left in the living room, but there was no sign of the

:24:14. > :24:24.pizza or the packaging. The police were convinced finding the Pizza

:24:24. > :24:29.

:24:29. > :24:34.could lead them closer to her, so Friday night, 6:00pm. She met

:24:34. > :24:41.friends for drinks at a pub on Pond Street. They remember her that

:24:41. > :24:48.night as her usual happy self. On the way home, she called her best

:24:48. > :24:53.friend and arranged to meet up on Christmas Eve. She then popped into

:24:53. > :25:03.a Waitrose supermarket, an off- licence and a Tesco Express, where

:25:03. > :25:12.

:25:12. > :25:22.This is the last ever recorded What happened when she got home

:25:22. > :25:26.

:25:26. > :25:31.These huge police search was under way. The Bristol Downs and the Avon

:25:31. > :25:36.gorge were scoured for clues. Further appeals were made. By now,

:25:36. > :25:45.she had been missing for over a week. The investigation was about

:25:45. > :25:50.to change course. It is a bit cold. It is lovely. The police received a

:25:50. > :25:56.call from a couple walking their dog. Three miles from her flat.

:25:56. > :26:04.They had spotted part of a body in the snow. It was her, fully clothed,

:26:04. > :26:10.and curled up on her side. The heavy snowfall meant she was barely

:26:10. > :26:18.visible, and she had lain unseen for several days. She had been left

:26:18. > :26:22.on the side of the road. Her body, now frozen. It was Christmas Day.

:26:22. > :26:30.She was dumped like a piece of garbage. That is where my daughter

:26:30. > :26:40.was last. I was thinking, why? Why? Why? There seemed to be no reason

:26:40. > :26:43.

:26:43. > :26:49.After her family identified the body, a post mortem began.

:26:49. > :26:54.cause of her death was manual strangulation. There was evidence

:26:54. > :27:00.that there had been some sign of a struggle. Crucially, they also

:27:00. > :27:06.found tiny traces of DNA on her party, belonging to someone else. -

:27:06. > :27:11.- on her body. The investigation into Joanna Yeates is now a murder

:27:11. > :27:15.investigation. She had been found fully-clothed, except for a soccer

:27:15. > :27:20.that was missing. The police hoped that recovering it, along with the

:27:20. > :27:30.pizza, could provide some answers. DB is captivated the nation.

:27:30. > :27:36.

:27:36. > :27:41.police say a body found yesterday... Denied she went missing, witnesses

:27:41. > :27:48.had heard screams in the area around her flat at -- on the night.

:27:48. > :27:55.They were of interest, because it helped us to a time when the

:27:55. > :27:59.incident had happened, which resulted in her death. But when

:27:59. > :28:06.detectives had not on the door of her immediate neighbour, Dutch

:28:06. > :28:12.national Vincent Tabak, he claimed he had not seen or heard anything.

:28:12. > :28:17.It was at 4pm on the Monday morning, when two police officers knocked on

:28:17. > :28:23.the door of the second flat. He did not have any information to provide

:28:23. > :28:28.us concerning her whereabouts. flat was later searched, but police

:28:28. > :28:33.found nothing. Seemingly out of the picture, he headed to the

:28:33. > :28:38.Netherlands with his girlfriend for new year. Their attention was drawn

:28:38. > :28:48.to another of her neighbours, her landlord. He was one of the few

:28:48. > :28:50.

:28:50. > :28:56.people with keys to her flat. His Five days after her body was

:28:56. > :29:01.recovered, he was arrested. The tabloid press went into overdrive.

:29:01. > :29:06.Speculation about his supposed involvement was rife. But amazingly,

:29:06. > :29:11.just three hours after his arrest, an officer received a call from

:29:11. > :29:16.Vincent Tabak in the Netherlands, claiming to have new information.

:29:16. > :29:21.He could remember that Christopher Jefferies' car had been parked in a

:29:21. > :29:31.particular position the evening before she went missing, and the

:29:31. > :29:33.

:29:33. > :29:37.next morning, the car was facing in Police were now questioning

:29:37. > :29:42.Christopher Jefferies. The police then sent a team out to meet

:29:42. > :29:47.Vincent Tabak out to Amsterdam, but his version of events seemed

:29:47. > :29:53.confused. There were details of Vincent's account that were

:29:53. > :29:57.concerning me. He was made in some areas, he was over interested in

:29:57. > :30:03.other areas, particularly around our forensic examination. There

:30:03. > :30:09.were things in his account that just didn't sound right to Timmy.

:30:09. > :30:15.Then his reluctance to give his DNA at the end of the process again, it

:30:15. > :30:20.obviously started to ring some alarm bells. Tabak's statement was

:30:21. > :30:25.a smokescreen. The landlord was entirely innocent. When police

:30:25. > :30:35.checked Christobel Jeffrey's' DNA against the sample found on Jo's

:30:35. > :30:36.

:30:36. > :30:41.body, there was no match. He was As the investigation gathered

:30:41. > :30:44.momentum, police launched a Facebook campaign and turned to

:30:44. > :30:51.Crimewatch. They've been painstakingly reconstructing every

:30:51. > :30:59.last detail. As our team began to film an appeal, the press descended.

:30:59. > :31:03.Within hours, police received over 300 new course. -- new course. Then,

:31:03. > :31:07.shortly before the reconstruction was due to air, they made a

:31:07. > :31:12.dramatic breakthrough. Forensic scientists had spent weeks

:31:13. > :31:17.enhancing the Tiny DNA sample found on Jo's body, enabling them to

:31:18. > :31:24.establish a link to Vincent Tabak. The detective's suspicions were

:31:24. > :31:27.being confirmed. I had a strong gut feeling that something wasn't right.

:31:27. > :31:34.Tabak was arrested and his possessions seized. They included

:31:34. > :31:37.his car, his mobile and his laptop. The secrets they contained would be

:31:37. > :31:43.hard for Tabak to explain away. They found that six days before her

:31:43. > :31:49.body was discovered, Tabak had been using Google street view. He was

:31:49. > :31:54.looking at Longwood Lane and in particular at the bit of Longwood

:31:54. > :31:59.Lane where he'd left Jo's body. There is only one person in the

:31:59. > :32:02.world and it -- who knew where Jo was, and that was Vincent Tabak.

:32:03. > :32:07.Forensics are examined his car for evidence. What they discovered

:32:07. > :32:15.confirmed what happened that night. In the boot of the car we were able

:32:15. > :32:20.to find minute traces of blood that was a match back to Joanna Yeates.

:32:20. > :32:25.Be evidence was damning. Tabak, the man next door, was charged with

:32:25. > :32:29.murder. Despite his refusal to answer any questions, detectives

:32:29. > :32:39.now had a better picture of what happened to Jo on the night she

:32:39. > :32:59.

:32:59. > :33:05.Jo was overpowered by 6 ft 4 Tabak, who gripped her throat, strangling

:33:05. > :33:11.her to death. That night he bundled her body into his boat and went

:33:11. > :33:14.looking for a place to discard it. -- into his car boot. He even

:33:14. > :33:22.stopped at an ASDA supermarket to text his girlfriend, telling her

:33:22. > :33:27.that he was bored. He in fact bought crisps, beer and rock salt

:33:27. > :33:37.while Jo's body lay in his car boot. The whole exercise an elaborate

:33:37. > :34:03.

:34:03. > :34:07.You know these birds which run along the ground working so hard

:34:07. > :34:11.and then they take to the Air Flying butt macro that to me is my

:34:11. > :34:17.daughter. She'd just taken off and somebody shot her down. She's been

:34:17. > :34:22.stolen from us but she had her life stolen from her. Nearly three weeks

:34:22. > :34:29.after his arrest, Vincent Tabak confessed to a prison chaplain that

:34:29. > :34:34.he had killed Jo Yeates. He then pleaded guilty to manslaughter. But

:34:34. > :34:38.the police were convinced he was guilty of murder. And so last month

:34:38. > :34:43.he went to trial at Bristol Crown Court. Tabak claimed he'd made a

:34:43. > :34:47.pass at Jo, causing her to scream. While trying to silence her he'd

:34:47. > :34:52.accidentally strangled her to death. But the prosecution believe the

:34:52. > :34:59.attack was intentional and sexually motivated. The trial run for 13

:34:59. > :35:04.days with Tabak failing to answer 80 questions. Then, after almost 14

:35:04. > :35:13.hours of deliberation, the jury returned their verdict. Vincent

:35:13. > :35:16.Tabak was guilty of murder. grieve because I miss her but she

:35:16. > :35:22.has missed so much as well. Getting married, children, all of these

:35:22. > :35:32.type of things... I note that is what she would have wanted in the

:35:32. > :35:35.

:35:35. > :35:39.future. Nothing will replace my Such a tragedy. The details that

:35:39. > :35:43.have come out since the trial finished are really shocking.

:35:43. > :35:48.Sickening. Tabak was obsessed with violent pornography, specifically

:35:48. > :35:52.films showing women being choked during sex. He would watch those

:35:52. > :35:55.films on the morning he killed Jo and in the days afterwards he was

:35:55. > :35:58.flicking continuously between reports of how the police

:35:58. > :36:02.investigation was progressing and those pornographic sites. He used

:36:02. > :36:06.prostitutes when he was away on business trips, and prosecutors

:36:06. > :36:10.believe he crossed the line from of servitor perpetrator. I and yet

:36:10. > :36:15.none of that was heard at the trial. No, it was inadmissible. He

:36:15. > :36:22.portrayed himself as being sexually naive. He said he had killed Jo by

:36:22. > :36:27.accident, even suggested she had been flirtatious. It was grotesque.

:36:27. > :36:30.It was cold and calculating. He spent weeks researching the details

:36:30. > :36:33.between murder and manslaughter. And he didn't give a dam about

:36:33. > :36:37.putting the family through that harrowing trial, just like he

:36:37. > :36:40.didn't care about hiding the body and the agonies that caused. It was

:36:40. > :36:45.all about him and thankfully the jury saw through it. What about the

:36:45. > :36:49.moment when he showed the flash of arrogance? He was being too clever.

:36:49. > :36:54.That phone call he didn't have to make, trying to frame Christopher

:36:54. > :36:59.Jefferies. It unravelled after that. That led them to the DNA that would

:36:59. > :37:02.corner him. But it was a difficult investigation. After the trial,

:37:02. > :37:07.Christopher Jefferies said the police wasted time and resources on

:37:07. > :37:13.him that should have been focused elsewhere. And at the trial, Tabak

:37:13. > :37:16.got life plus 20 years. Yes. Jo's parents said they hoped Tabak's

:37:16. > :37:24.time in prison would be a living hell. They said they would never

:37:24. > :37:30.get over it. They just miss her. Still to come tonight, the cyclist

:37:30. > :37:33.who stepped in to stop this man. He is suspected of trying to rape a

:37:33. > :37:36.young woman in Brighton. I would absolutely do it again, that's what

:37:36. > :37:42.everyone should do in that situation. I didn't think twice and

:37:42. > :37:45.I don't see why anyone would. we will hear from the 14-year-old

:37:45. > :37:55.boy who was blasted in both legs with a shotgun as he answered his

:37:55. > :37:58.

:37:58. > :38:05.I looked down at my leg and saw the holes in my trousers. It was kind

:38:05. > :38:11.of horrific. And can you identify this man? Thought to have planted

:38:11. > :38:15.suspect devices in Canterbury. That is coming up soon. First, Matthew

:38:15. > :38:20.has the latest on what's been happening on the phones. Let's

:38:20. > :38:24.start off by interrupting Sue, who is in charge of the Rico Gordon

:38:24. > :38:28.investigation. You've had some good calls coming in as a yes, one

:38:28. > :38:31.particular is of interest. identified as one of the images on

:38:31. > :38:36.the CCTV. But I'd really like the name of all three of the people we

:38:36. > :38:40.saw. Have you had names so far? have had one name, it looks like we

:38:40. > :38:45.could have the right identity for that individual. That is what you

:38:45. > :38:48.wanted, names. What about vans and cars? Nothing on that, but we've

:38:48. > :38:52.also had some other names put forward by someone who didn't give

:38:52. > :38:57.their name. I would urge them to call back, we would like to speak

:38:57. > :39:00.to them. If that was you calling, please call us, we're waiting for

:39:00. > :39:10.the call. Let's get more on the sad case of the baby's body found in

:39:10. > :39:11.

:39:11. > :39:16.Lancashire. Neil, what is coming? The items aren't being specifically

:39:16. > :39:20.linked, but I need someone to put those items together. You are

:39:20. > :39:24.desperate for bad weather to come forward. Yes, we want the mother to

:39:24. > :39:28.come forward. I know it's difficult but I believe you really need our

:39:28. > :39:38.help. Come forward tonight and tell us what happened to your child. We

:39:38. > :39:43.Time for some more wanted faces. First is Dwayne Anthony Mullings.

:39:43. > :39:45.Earlier this year he was convicted of raping a woman in 2004, but he

:39:45. > :39:50.failed to turn up at Sheffield Crown Court and was sentenced to

:39:50. > :39:55.six years in his absence. 35 year- old Mullings, who has a street name

:39:55. > :40:04.of Ribsey, is originally from Jamaica but has links to Sheffield

:40:04. > :40:09.and Doncaster. This is Imran Shaukat, police want to speak to

:40:09. > :40:12.the 26-year-old in connection with a fatal hit and run accident. He

:40:12. > :40:19.has the two faint birthmarks on the side of his face and has links to

:40:19. > :40:26.Luton, London and Manchester. Lagat this. This is 56-year-old Robert

:40:26. > :40:30.Stevens, otherwise known as Robert Melias, rubbing a bookmaker's at

:40:30. > :40:34.knifepoint in September in A bath. Robert Stevens has connections

:40:34. > :40:39.across the West Country and has various tattoos including a panther

:40:39. > :40:45.and the word city on his left arm and the letters B.O.B on his right

:40:45. > :40:49.hand. Lastly his Nael Abdul Khaliq. Police would like to talk to the

:40:49. > :40:54.30-year-old in connection with two burglaries and a robbery or

:40:54. > :40:59.committed in west London. He is known by the street name of Tiny.

:40:59. > :41:09.If you recognise any of them you can call us or Texas at the numbers

:41:09. > :41:12.

:41:12. > :41:16.Take a moment to take a look at this image here. Police are

:41:16. > :41:21.confident that this man would have raped a young woman in Brighton if

:41:22. > :41:24.it hadn't been for the actions of a passing cyclist who came to her aid.

:41:24. > :41:30.Detective Chief Inspector Nick Sloan from Surrey and Sussex crime

:41:30. > :41:36.team is here to explain more. What happened? The victim had been out

:41:36. > :41:41.for the evening with her family and was on her way home, along Edward

:41:41. > :41:45.Street in Ryton, near the American Express building. - back in

:41:45. > :41:49.Brighton. She walked along the road and became aware of someone behind

:41:49. > :41:53.her. They grabbed her. It fell to her like was a case of mistaken

:41:53. > :41:57.identity, the chap pulled away and she walked on up the road. It was

:41:57. > :42:01.about two minutes later that he attacked her and pushed her to the

:42:01. > :42:08.ground and sexually assaulted her. Just to get this right, it's a busy

:42:08. > :42:14.place, a busy city centre. Yes, it was a brazen attack, a well it

:42:14. > :42:18.dual-carriageway road. Fortunately, our brave and... The victim acted

:42:18. > :42:22.in a dignified fashion and screamed and fought. She was heard by a

:42:22. > :42:24.passing cyclist. I have no doubt that if it hadn't been for the

:42:24. > :42:32.actions of the cyclist she would have been subjected to a much worse

:42:32. > :42:36.ordeal. This bloke is a bit of a key role. He also was pretty modest.

:42:36. > :42:40.It was just that moment. It was quite lucky timing wise that I

:42:40. > :42:45.turned up when I did. I chased after him to try and get him to

:42:45. > :42:49.stop. Then he began to chase the way. I thought about following him

:42:49. > :42:54.but I went back to the victim because she was on her own in the

:42:54. > :42:58.dark. Despicable, really. The guy is horrible. What do you say about

:42:58. > :43:01.people like that? I would absolutely do it again, that's what

:43:01. > :43:06.everyone should do in that situation. I didn't think twice and

:43:06. > :43:11.I don't see why anyone would. Despicable is the word. Good CCTV,

:43:11. > :43:16.just give us a bit more detail. can clearly see the offender. The

:43:16. > :43:21.CCTV cameras are very close to the scene. You can see that he is

:43:21. > :43:25.wearing white trainers, he has got some genes on with very distinctive

:43:25. > :43:31.Brading around the pockets and a black leather style type jacket and

:43:31. > :43:37.a very distinctive hat, a trilby hat. He actually went back to pick

:43:37. > :43:41.that up when he was being chased off by the cyclist. As you say, the

:43:41. > :43:46.woman has been very brave, very dignified. A terrible thing that

:43:46. > :43:50.happened. She is very keen that this man is caught. I don't know

:43:50. > :43:53.why he did it, what led him to do what he did. I can't know he's not

:43:53. > :43:58.going to do it again. I don't think anyone else should have to go

:43:58. > :44:04.through that. I would just like to know why. I want to know why he

:44:04. > :44:08.chose that night, what led up to it and why he chose me? There are a

:44:08. > :44:13.lot of questions I'd like to get answers to. The next person might

:44:13. > :44:18.not be so lucky. A brave woman. Thank you for joining us this

:44:18. > :44:23.evening. If you recognise the man that we saw there then it is time

:44:23. > :44:33.to pick up the phone tonight. If you have been a victim of crime

:44:33. > :44:39.

:44:40. > :44:46.then you can call the victim We start now in Bath.

:47:49. > :48:12.

:48:12. > :48:21.sister was watching TV. A normal Can you get that, please? There was

:48:21. > :48:31.a knock-on the door, and my sister asked me to get it. So why did.

:48:31. > :48:57.

:48:57. > :49:02.Hello? Police? Can I have an I looked at my leg, and I saw the

:49:02. > :49:12.holes in my trousers. There was blood dripping from my legs, to the

:49:12. > :49:12.

:49:12. > :49:17.floor. It was horrific. I got to the end of the road and I saw all

:49:17. > :49:24.of these police cars. The police had guns. I ask what had happened,

:49:24. > :49:29.and they told me. I have woken up in a hospital bed with loads of

:49:29. > :49:38.doctors and a few nurses standing around me. There was a gaping hole

:49:38. > :49:43.in his right leg. The flats have -- flesh was smashed up. I spent two

:49:43. > :49:49.weeks in hospital, I had four operations. They had taken out all

:49:49. > :49:53.of the pellets from my leg. There were a lot of pellets. The doctors

:49:53. > :49:58.were telling me that they were not sure if I would be able to walk

:49:58. > :50:03.again. They thought I might have been paralysed. It should never

:50:03. > :50:09.have happened. He is just an innocent boy. It was frightening

:50:09. > :50:13.for him. He went through a lot of pain and suffering, for nothing.

:50:13. > :50:18.kept going over it in my head, I did not know why somebody would do

:50:19. > :50:22.something like this to me, because I have always been quiet, I never

:50:22. > :50:32.got into much trouble, so I do not really understand why trouble has

:50:32. > :50:36.come to me. We are joined by Joe Kidman. A lot

:50:36. > :50:43.of pain and suffering, that is for sure. What reason could there have

:50:43. > :50:48.been? All of our inquiries have found no positive reason why

:50:48. > :50:54.anybody in that house should have been attacked. This could be a case

:50:54. > :51:03.of mistaken identity. What are you looking for? We need the help of

:51:03. > :51:08.the local community, in particular, we have got some CCTV that has not

:51:08. > :51:12.previously been released, and that shows two people were involved in

:51:12. > :51:21.the shooting. We want Crimewatch viewers to help us to identify them.

:51:21. > :51:26.Let's take a look at them. What are people seeing here? This is a few

:51:26. > :51:30.moments before the attack. Fate of going towards his home. The first

:51:30. > :51:35.one was carrying a shotgun, and a minute or so later, running back

:51:35. > :51:43.from where they came from. You are interested in what one of them was

:51:43. > :51:50.wearing? Yes, this first man. On his docker jacket, it appears that

:51:50. > :51:54.there is a rectangular logo, and towards the centre, something that

:51:54. > :52:01.reflects the light even more. is quite distinctive. People can

:52:01. > :52:07.look at that on the website. This boy has made good progress. Yes, I

:52:07. > :52:12.am pleased to say that, despite the injuries, he has gone back to

:52:12. > :52:21.school, and he is playing football again. We wish him all the very

:52:21. > :52:25.best. If you know anything, please call. It is time for some more news

:52:25. > :52:30.on previous appeals. We start with the case we featured

:52:30. > :52:35.five years ago, the rape of a woman, who became separated from her

:52:35. > :52:39.friends in Bromley. We showed you this CCTV of a man police believe

:52:39. > :52:45.to be responsible. Thanks to a breakthrough, the attacker was

:52:45. > :52:49.identified as Cheslin Campher. Two weeks ago, he was given an

:52:49. > :52:54.indeterminate prison sentence. He will serve at least four and a half

:52:55. > :53:01.years, and he will be deported back to South Africa when he is released.

:53:01. > :53:05.You might recognise this man. He was a wanted face on the last show.

:53:05. > :53:11.He is Mohammed Bashiri, he tried to blackmail a pensioner after per

:53:11. > :53:16.lottery winnings. He was located, and he is now serving at least two

:53:16. > :53:21.years in prison. Finally, this CCTV of an attack

:53:21. > :53:26.which took place outside the Eastside Pub in Essex last year,

:53:26. > :53:30.which we appealed about last November. It shows a Dortmund being

:53:30. > :53:36.slashed across the face with a weapon. He needed 50 stitches. The

:53:36. > :53:42.man responsible was identified as Lennox Richards from Barkingside.

:53:42. > :53:47.In August, he was sentenced to five years for GBH.

:53:47. > :53:51.We have got an unusual case in which two suspect devices were

:53:51. > :54:01.planted in Canterbury, including one left in the baby-changing unit

:54:01. > :54:03.

:54:03. > :54:07.of the Marks and Spencers. An unusual case, tell me more. It was

:54:07. > :54:13.4:20pm on 26th August, the bank holiday weekend. We received a call

:54:13. > :54:17.that there was a suspect device on the railway line in Canterbury.

:54:18. > :54:22.While we were investigating, the fire alarm activated in the baby-

:54:22. > :54:28.changing room of Marks & Spencer has in the Whitefriars shopping

:54:28. > :54:33.centre. We investigated, and that was a suspect device that had

:54:33. > :54:37.activated, issuing a thick smoke, causing distress to shoppers.

:54:37. > :54:43.have brought us pictures of these devices. Quite complex looking

:54:43. > :54:47.things. This was found by the railway line. Pretty terrifying.

:54:48. > :54:56.You said there was thick smoke in Marks & Spencer us. This is what

:54:56. > :55:02.was left, the small dispose of -- explosives. We are linking the

:55:02. > :55:07.incidents. We regard this as an incident carried out by one group.

:55:07. > :55:13.The motive is still a mystery. Nobody has claimed responsibility,

:55:13. > :55:17.which is unusual. Clearly, their plan was designed to cause maximum

:55:17. > :55:24.disruption to the authorities and the public of Canterbury. You have

:55:24. > :55:29.got some interesting CCTV. What are we watching? We are looking at the

:55:29. > :55:35.man we believe placed the device in Marks & Spencer as in Canterbury.

:55:35. > :55:38.You see him in the store, he spends 15 minutes there, he places the

:55:38. > :55:43.device and he leaves, almost as soon as he exits the store, the

:55:43. > :55:47.device activates, filling the store with smoke. He appears to be

:55:47. > :55:52.dressed as a cyclist. We do have evidence he got around Canterbury

:55:52. > :55:58.on a push bike. He was walking with great purpose. You think he was

:55:58. > :56:02.working as part of 18? At least three mobile phones were reduced on

:56:02. > :56:07.the day of the offence, to communicate between each other.

:56:08. > :56:13.They also use them to contact the media and Kent Police, and claimed

:56:13. > :56:19.that they had found the device. We have some footage that I would like

:56:19. > :56:23.help from the viewers with, which is footage of three women, who

:56:23. > :56:30.purchased the telephones in London, two weeks before the defence, on

:56:30. > :56:36.14th August. That is interesting. Nobody was hurt, but you are taking

:56:36. > :56:41.this seriously. Why? It was so organised, so meticulous, and the

:56:42. > :56:48.devices were clearly designed to scare people. Do you recognise any

:56:48. > :56:53.of those people? We urgently need to hear from you tonight. Time for

:56:53. > :56:58.a quick blast update. We are getting some good

:56:58. > :57:02.information on the Rico Gordon murder. The lad called in the

:57:02. > :57:07.crossfire, innocent. Several courts have given names to possible band

:57:07. > :57:13.members. And names for one of the witnesses. We need that person to

:57:13. > :57:16.come forward. We are getting calls about the baby jacket. We do not

:57:16. > :57:22.need any more information, we know where it is from, we just need to

:57:22. > :57:28.link it to the baby boy. That is everything for now. You can

:57:28. > :57:32.view all of the reconstructions, the CCTV, online, and you can do it

:57:32. > :57:36.on your smartphone. Just log on to the website. The phone lines stay

:57:36. > :57:42.open until midnight tomorrow, so there is still plenty of time to
