:01:37. > :01:40.We'll have the inside story of how the suspect was tracked

:01:41. > :01:49.1,000 miles across Europe and brought to justice.

:01:50. > :01:55.We had a dangerous sexual predator out there and it felt like searching

:01:56. > :01:59.for a needle in a haystack. We begin tonight with

:02:00. > :02:01.the unusual and terrifying attack Susan was getting ready for work on

:02:02. > :02:08.a normal Wednesday morning in July, when she walked into her living room

:02:09. > :02:13.to find a stranger standing there. I didn't realise how much I

:02:14. > :02:29.appreciated my eyesight. Even now, I wake up

:02:30. > :02:36.and I can't believe it's happened. My site is never going to be as it

:02:37. > :02:39.was. We've lived here 19 years and

:02:40. > :02:50.in that time it's been a really nice place to live,

:02:51. > :02:57.it's been safe, it's quiet. Stuart and I have been

:02:58. > :03:00.together 35 years and we've done a lot of stuff together

:03:01. > :03:05.in the house, making it nice. I'm a long-distance lorry driver

:03:06. > :03:08.and my main work is Rome, Never had a thought ever

:03:09. > :03:17.as to leaving Sue on her own here. Sue's always been comfortable

:03:18. > :03:31.staying at home, with me being away. On Tuesday I had quite a busy day

:03:32. > :03:38.at work. I got home sort

:03:39. > :03:46.of tea time then watched the telly That would have been my routine on

:03:47. > :04:06.that Tuesday. It was pretty quiet out

:04:07. > :04:18.on the street. I'd come through, opened up

:04:19. > :04:25.the patio doors, let Maisie out. It was bin day, so I got

:04:26. > :04:32.the black bags and I put those just outside the big gate. I'd fed

:04:33. > :04:35.Maisie. Then I'd walked back through and

:04:36. > :04:53.into the bathroom to get showered. I was washing my hair

:04:54. > :04:56.and I was just thinking through what I was going to do that day,

:04:57. > :05:17.what I'd got on at work. I hadn't heard any noises,

:05:18. > :05:22.everything was As I opened the door... he stood

:05:23. > :05:51.there, I just looked at him. He just went to me "shhhh"

:05:52. > :05:54.like that and he opened As I screamed he punched me in the

:05:55. > :06:13.mouth. I don't think I've ever been

:06:14. > :06:17.as frightened in my life. He said 'get down',

:06:18. > :06:21.and as I got down he shot me. He just said 'stay there' and I

:06:22. > :06:25.heard footsteps and then I thought I I just lay there

:06:26. > :06:28.and my heart was just pounding. I could feel something running

:06:29. > :06:30.down my cheek I was just panicking and I thought,

:06:31. > :06:49.oh my god, what's going to happen? I thought I can't

:06:50. > :06:51.stay here, I've got to get help. I got up, I knew I couldn't

:06:52. > :06:54.see out of one eye. I just ran next door and I just

:06:55. > :07:05.knocked on their door, I was banging I got the call

:07:06. > :07:20.from Sue's brother telling me I just couldn't believe

:07:21. > :07:29.what he'd told me. I just, knew I had to get home. The

:07:30. > :07:59.doctors have said it's never going I'm so scared that anything could

:08:00. > :08:04.happen to my other eye and then I wouldn't be able to see, and that

:08:05. > :08:07.does frighten me, the thought Sue's constantly reminded

:08:08. > :08:10.every day of the week. Even now, I still wake up

:08:11. > :08:15.in the morning and I realise I can't I still relive it, it's the last

:08:16. > :08:26.thing I think about when I go to sleep and the first thing I think

:08:27. > :08:30.about when I get up in the morning. Everything's just

:08:31. > :08:30.completely different. Sue likes to play a bit of music

:08:31. > :08:33.on the weekend, I can't remember the last time

:08:34. > :08:40.that she played any music. I can't drive, I can't sit

:08:41. > :08:47.and enjoy reading a book. I don't really spend a lot

:08:48. > :08:52.of time in the garden. I just don't understand why he felt

:08:53. > :08:55.he had to shoot me, why he's done that, and just

:08:56. > :09:05.completely changed my life. Well,

:09:06. > :09:13.DS Richard Burgess joins me now. This was a normal Wednesday morning,

:09:14. > :09:16.on a residential street in Basildon. What we do know

:09:17. > :09:33.about the person who did this? The attacker is about 25, 30 years

:09:34. > :09:41.old. Slim build with brown hair. He speaks with Denise European accent.

:09:42. > :09:45.He was wearing possibly jeans. In the reconstruction we thought the

:09:46. > :09:51.gun. What can you tell us about that. It was an air weapon. It fired

:09:52. > :09:56.a lead bullet full stop it is black in colour and Oxy shaped. It is

:09:57. > :10:01.about four inches square, fitted into the palm of his hand. It was

:10:02. > :10:07.Wednesday the 29th of July this year. People just going about their

:10:08. > :10:11.normal business in the area. You want to get in touch with anyone who

:10:12. > :10:16.saw anything that could be useful? It was a bright and sunny morning

:10:17. > :10:22.and someone must have seen this man enter and leave the premises.

:10:23. > :10:25.Chesham Drive is close to a main arterial route between London and

:10:26. > :10:32.Southend which goes through Basildon. Did anyone see someone of

:10:33. > :10:38.that description getting into a vehicle? And there is a reward?

:10:39. > :10:47.Crimestoppers offered a reward of up to ?5,000 for anyone who can bring

:10:48. > :10:48.this to a successful conviction. So terrifying attack and no telling

:10:49. > :10:50.what this man might do next. He really needs to be

:10:51. > :10:53.caught. Please if you think you can help,

:10:54. > :10:56.call the usual number now. There is

:10:57. > :11:05.of course one news story dominating Friday's terror attacks in Paris

:11:06. > :11:16.have shocked the world. 129 the latest death toll. Many

:11:17. > :11:27.still critically injured. We'll be hearing from Britain's top

:11:28. > :11:35.officer in charge of counter terrorism in just a moment,

:11:36. > :11:43.but first we can speak to BBC News' Tim Wilcox

:11:44. > :11:53.who is in Paris tonight. Normally the president only

:11:54. > :11:56.addresses both Houses of Parliament if he wants to change the

:11:57. > :12:00.constitution, which in effect he does. He wants to extend the state

:12:01. > :12:03.of emergency for another three months and also he wants

:12:04. > :12:11.international unity in the fight against Islamic State. He once unity

:12:12. > :12:15.of purpose involving Russia, America and the Gulf states, everyone too

:12:16. > :12:19.crushed this. There will be no troops on the ground, that has been

:12:20. > :12:24.made clear by President Obama, but in terms of air strikes and

:12:25. > :12:29.restriction of money and focusing on the borders which Islamic State

:12:30. > :12:34.control, they want to destroy that with air strikes. And we saw the

:12:35. > :12:40.first 12 last night in that intensive strike against the de

:12:41. > :12:43.facto capital of Islamic State, Rocca, by French warplanes.

:12:44. > :12:46.So how prepared is the UK for such an attack?

:12:47. > :14:12.What these terrorists want to do is destroy our way of life. We will do

:14:13. > :14:14.everything we can to keep our people say. But we live in a very dangerous

:14:15. > :14:28.world. Well giving his first live interview

:14:29. > :14:34.following Friday's attacks is the Metropolitan Police Commissioner

:14:35. > :14:55.Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe. What changes have been made in our

:14:56. > :14:58.continued to work with our communities and community policing

:14:59. > :15:03.is out there, making sure we look at all of our communities. There is a

:15:04. > :15:06.great danger people try to divide minorities and drive wedges. We are

:15:07. > :15:11.determined it will not happen. minorities and drive wedges. We are

:15:12. > :15:17.have looked at what happened in Paris and

:15:18. > :15:20.have looked at what happened in available and we have to get ready

:15:21. > :15:25.for the England and France game tomorrow night. We have to strike

:15:26. > :15:30.the right balance between trying to reassure people and keeping them

:15:31. > :15:33.safe. The game is tomorrow night at Wembley and you are increasing your

:15:34. > :15:37.police presence, but what would be your direct message to people with

:15:38. > :15:43.kids who may be taking them along who think it isn't safe, what would

:15:44. > :15:48.you say to them? First of all, go along. We believe it will be saved.

:15:49. > :15:53.We had the terrorist threat level across the United Kingdom is at

:15:54. > :15:57.severe. There is always that running in the background. We have no

:15:58. > :16:02.intelligence there will be an attack on this game. We putting officers

:16:03. > :16:05.there to reassure people. People would expect it was a common

:16:06. > :16:10.response. France were playing Germany a couple of nights ago in

:16:11. > :16:14.Paris when these attacks happened. The National team France is

:16:15. > :16:17.Paris when these attacks happened. to London. We want to keep them safe

:16:18. > :16:20.Paris when these attacks happened. and we want to make sure the 80,000

:16:21. > :16:25.people expected at the ground have a great night. We have heard from

:16:26. > :16:27.people expected at the ground have a Prime Minister in recent days the

:16:28. > :16:31.intelligence services will see an increase in their manpower. It is a

:16:32. > :16:35.medium to long-term change. One increase in their manpower. It is a

:16:36. > :16:37.might think increasing your manpower increase in their manpower. It is a

:16:38. > :16:40.and armed police on the streets is what we need now. Have you

:16:41. > :16:40.and armed police on the streets is given the guaranteed from the Home

:16:41. > :16:44.Secretary that he will be given given the guaranteed from the Home

:16:45. > :16:49.funding to do that? We are all the time to government about

:16:50. > :16:54.resources and the number of police officers, particularly

:16:55. > :16:55.resources and the number of police counterterrorist investigators. As a

:16:56. > :17:00.result of what happened in Paris, counterterrorist investigators. As a

:17:01. > :17:05.the number of firearms officers we have and how we deploy them. I have

:17:06. > :17:10.ordered we have a different number of officers. We have increased the

:17:11. > :17:12.number of officers 24 hours a day and we have changed the way they are

:17:13. > :17:17.operating immediately. Government will have to consider how they

:17:18. > :17:22.respond and we are talking ab about how to achieve this to keep people

:17:23. > :17:26.safe in the future. Is this a big challenge to you and your police

:17:27. > :17:30.force, it is a big challenge to all others, the many millions of viewers

:17:31. > :17:37.tonight, what is your message to them to themselves safe? First of

:17:38. > :17:41.all, reassure them. We have an excellent security service, an

:17:42. > :17:44.excellent police force. The best way to keep ourselves safe is good

:17:45. > :17:48.intelligence. Through your programme, to ask people if you see

:17:49. > :17:54.something unusual, if you worry people are getting radicalised, if

:17:55. > :17:56.you worry people might be getting involved in terrorism, telephoned

:17:57. > :18:04.the police. I know you will be showing the hotline number. We have

:18:05. > :18:09.a fantastic security service, both the external and internal, working

:18:10. > :18:14.hard to get the intelligence and make sure we identify the suspects.

:18:15. > :18:19.The police, we are here to do two big things. One, where we get a case

:18:20. > :18:23.to put before the court, that is what police officers do. We take

:18:24. > :18:27.that intelligence, look at what these people are doing and then

:18:28. > :18:31.rebuild a case to charge. Then it is up to the courts to decide. And

:18:32. > :18:37.sadly, if these people get through, as they did in Paris, the uniformed

:18:38. > :18:41.officers are there to respond. With firearms, of course. We're not an

:18:42. > :18:47.armed force, we don't seek to be an armed police force, but when we get

:18:48. > :18:51.this attack, we have to be match fit, intervene and make sure people

:18:52. > :18:53.are made safe and arrest these people should they get through.

:18:54. > :18:58.Sir Bernard thank you very much for joining us.

:18:59. > :19:03.If you see or hear anything suspicious, contact the police on

:19:04. > :19:22.the anti-terrorist hotline number: I want to know who cleared my son.

:19:23. > :19:24.That is what we are here to find out.

:19:25. > :19:26.She was cleared of murdering her six-year-old son Rikki.

:19:27. > :19:28.Could new technology and new witnesses finally reveal who

:19:29. > :19:31.Wanted faces now and the first three are all

:19:32. > :19:34.described by police as dangerous so should NOT be approached.

:19:35. > :19:36.Just dial 999 if you know where they are.

:19:37. > :19:39.Number one is this man Shane O'Brien although he's also known as Troy.

:19:40. > :19:42.Police want to question him in connection with the murder

:19:43. > :19:45.of a man at a bar in Eastcote in West London last month.

:19:46. > :19:48.O'Brien is 27 and has links to Kent, Reading and Ladbroke Grove

:19:49. > :19:53.He also has a mark on the centre of his face and a tattoo

:19:54. > :19:58.Next is 19-year-old Abdul Quadar Ahsan, or Karda

:19:59. > :20:03.He was arrested by detectives in Greater Manchester investigating the

:20:04. > :20:09.He was released on bail but has failed to return

:20:10. > :20:14.Ahsan has connections to Manchester, Leicester and Pakistan.

:20:15. > :20:16.Greater Manchester Police are also looking for our third face.

:20:17. > :20:18.James Docherty, although you may know him as

:20:19. > :20:24.They want to talk to him about a robbery at a restaurant

:20:25. > :20:26.in Manchester in which staff were threatened with being attacked.

:20:27. > :20:29.Docherty is 25, has a mole on his left cheek

:20:30. > :20:35.Finally for now is this man Abdul Munib Malik.

:20:36. > :20:38.Detectives want to question him after more than 30 kilos

:20:39. > :20:41.of heroin were seized from a flat in Bedfordshire.

:20:42. > :20:43.Malik has connections to Bedford, the West Midlands

:20:44. > :20:49.If you know where any of tonight's faces might be please do get in

:20:50. > :20:56.We'll go through the rest of the line up a little later,

:20:57. > :20:59.but now it's time for this month's CCTV round-up, starting with a

:21:00. > :21:14.The early hours of Sunday morning in Scunthorpe town centre and this

:21:15. > :21:19.woman is making her way home. As she passes a bus stop, she

:21:20. > :21:23.catches the attention of a man and Worried, she quickens her walk,

:21:24. > :21:27.but he stays close behind. Desperate to shake him off, she sits

:21:28. > :21:30.on a wall waiting for him to pass. As she carries on, she thinks he's

:21:31. > :21:34.still nearby so hides in a garden. The woman says he then

:21:35. > :21:42.sexually assaults her. Eventually she manages to flee

:21:43. > :21:47.into the road and flags down a car, This shopkeeper's working one

:21:48. > :22:01.Thursday evening in September totally unaware of what's

:22:02. > :22:06.about to happen. Suddenly three men burst into the

:22:07. > :22:10.shop, one immediately points what looks like a gun to his head and

:22:11. > :22:13.demands money, whilst another waves The terrified shopkeeper is

:22:14. > :22:22.marched at gunpoint to the till. But this robber seems to have

:22:23. > :22:25.forgotten to cover his face. Look closely too at what appears

:22:26. > :22:32.to be a tattoo on his hand. Another worker is forced

:22:33. > :22:35.to hand over the cash. And it's clearly thirsty work

:22:36. > :22:38.for the robbers, who help themselves Startled when a customer comes

:22:39. > :22:45.into the shop, the gang make Now watch carefully

:22:46. > :23:00.as this man walks up to a foreign currency counter

:23:01. > :23:03.at a travel agents in North London. He starts chatting to the cashier

:23:04. > :23:07.but it's not a holiday he's after, He slips a note under

:23:08. > :23:14.the window demanding money He's come prepared too,

:23:15. > :23:23.with a large bag for the cash. The terrified worker puts

:23:24. > :23:27.the money into the bag and hands it to the robber,

:23:28. > :23:32.who then casually leaves the shop CCTV picks him up outside

:23:33. > :23:43.as he makes his getaway. He took enough money for

:23:44. > :23:46.a dream holiday, but with your help This vulnerable woman is withdrawing

:23:47. > :23:58.cash from a bank in Grimsby Later, she realises her

:23:59. > :24:10.bank card is missing. Two women are caught on CCTV in the

:24:11. > :24:13.same bank less than an hour later. They go to the cashier and one uses

:24:14. > :24:18.what police believe is the woman's card to withdraw one thousand pounds

:24:19. > :24:22.from her bank account. The pair can be seen later that same

:24:23. > :24:26.day, shopping in Hull, again, They spend almost ?180

:24:27. > :24:31.in this shop before carrying Here more than ?250 is spent

:24:32. > :24:40.on clothes. But still not content with

:24:41. > :24:43.their loot, here they are, pushing a trolley out of a supermarket,

:24:44. > :24:50.having just used the card again. In total almost ?3,000 was taken

:24:51. > :25:15.from the woman's bank account. You can take another look at the

:25:16. > :25:19.faces and CCTV by pressing the red button on your motor.

:25:20. > :25:22.The murder of a child is of course the most distressing of all crimes.

:25:23. > :25:28.He was just six years old when he was found dead in woodland

:25:29. > :26:01.The murder of six-year-old Rikki Neave in 1994 is etched in

:26:02. > :26:12.the memories of anyone who lived in the Welland estate in Peterborough.

:26:13. > :26:59.On the day he disappeared, Rikki got up for school.

:27:00. > :27:05.He was seen near his home along Redmile Walk.

:27:06. > :27:17.Instead he spent the day hanging around the estate.

:27:18. > :27:24.Later in the day, he was spotted near the shops on Scalford Drive.

:27:25. > :27:38.One of the last sightings of him alive.

:27:39. > :27:48.His body was discovered the following morning.

:27:49. > :27:51.The whole of Peterborough felt the effects of Rikki's death.

:27:52. > :27:55.You can imagine that parents would have been extremely worried

:27:56. > :27:59.and concerned at the death of a six-year-old.

:28:00. > :28:04.The impact on the estate was absolutely massive.

:28:05. > :28:08.The case sparked further turmoil when Rikki's mother, Ruth Neave,

:28:09. > :28:17.She was also accused of cruelty to all four of her children.

:28:18. > :28:25.She admitted charges of child neglect and was jailed

:28:26. > :28:29.But was found not guilty of murdering Rikki.

:28:30. > :28:33.I wasn't mother of the year but then again, I never killed my son.

:28:34. > :28:42.Rikki's siblings were taken into care after their mother was jailed.

:28:43. > :28:48.His sister Rochelle was three when her brother died.

:28:49. > :29:04.It's absolutely devastating that the rest of us have got no brother now.

:29:05. > :29:26.From the day I left Peterborough to carrying on into my adult years,

:29:27. > :29:36.It became clear to us that with modern day processes,

:29:37. > :29:40.modern day methods of investigation, it gave us opportunity to look at

:29:41. > :29:46.the case with a fresh pair of eyes and that's exactly what we've done.

:29:47. > :29:49.Part of the new investigation involves using

:29:50. > :30:09.cutting edge technology to recreate the crime scene as it was then.

:30:10. > :30:12.You set up the equipment much like you would a camera

:36:35. > :36:38.in Uxbridge, West London as usual that Tuesday evening

:36:39. > :36:40.arriving home at around 6.55pm. As he pulled up onto

:38:26. > :38:30.on the actual night of the murder? Redwan pulled onto onto

:38:31. > :38:32.his driveway at around 6.55pm. At approximately 6.56pm we have this

:41:24. > :41:34.Now you may remember in April this year we showed you this CCTV

:41:39. > :41:42.The terrified cashier was forced to hand over the contents of the till,

:42:44. > :42:45.In April we appealed for your help after a woman was

:42:46. > :42:52.snatched from a bus stop in Leeds, brutally raped and left for dead.

:42:53. > :42:55.Well this is 22-year-old Zdenko Turtak - the man responsible.

:42:56. > :43:03.Following the attack he fled to his home country,

:43:12. > :43:16...A search for a man they say is highly dangerous to women.

:43:17. > :43:22...Have appealed to the community to put family loyalties aside.

:43:23. > :43:25.On Friday 6th March police in Leeds were called after

:43:26. > :43:28.a young woman was beaten, raped and left for dead in the front garden

:43:29. > :43:37.The victim had been standing at the bus stop.

:43:38. > :43:48.Lifted her off the ground, taken her into the garden

:43:49. > :43:52.behind that high hedge, thrown her to the floor with such force that

:43:53. > :43:57.she sustained a very nasty injury to her hip and her pelvis.

:43:58. > :44:03.Produced a rock, hit the victim over the head some 18 times.

:44:04. > :44:06.Subjected her to the most appalling rape

:44:07. > :44:20.and them calmly, nonchalantly left that garden and left her for dead.

:44:21. > :44:28.What he did to me he makes me feel disgusting.

:44:29. > :44:34.I have to live with the scars for the rest of my life.

:44:35. > :44:46.I just feel like this man has taken my freedom away.

:44:47. > :44:51.West Yorkshire Police launched a manhunt for the rapist.

:44:52. > :44:53.I had a very, very dangerous sexual predator roaming the streets

:44:54. > :44:57.of Leeds and of course that creates a lot of panic understandably

:44:58. > :45:05.The investigation needed all the resources the force could muster.

:45:06. > :45:11.At times there were more than 100 officers working on the case.

:45:12. > :45:16.We obtained a DNA profile from the offender from the scene,

:45:17. > :45:23.and I suppose we do get very used to science solving offences for us,

:45:24. > :45:27.but 24 to 36 hours later we don't know who this guy is.

:45:28. > :45:30.Yes, we've got a DNA profile, but he's not recorded

:45:31. > :45:36.So that horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that we had

:45:37. > :45:40.a dangerous sexual predator and he is somewhere out there.

:45:41. > :45:43.It literally for me felt like I was searching

:45:44. > :45:47.The DNA was not the only evidence detectives had.

:45:48. > :45:50.Police recovered a large rock from the scene.

:45:51. > :45:53.It had been used during the attack to bludgeon the victim

:45:54. > :46:06.There was a CCTV camera that overlooked the scene and of course

:46:07. > :46:11.the whole horrifying incident had been captured on camera.

:46:12. > :46:16.The images show that he struck her with a great deal of ferocity.

:46:17. > :46:18.I'd never come across such a violent attack, such a brazen

:46:19. > :46:26.attack you know literally feet away from what was a busy main road.

:46:27. > :46:35.Detectives could now focus on trawling other cameras to help them

:46:36. > :46:40.They soon discovered the young woman kidnapped

:46:41. > :46:48.at the bus stop was not the only one who had been stalked that night.

:46:49. > :46:50.We got two calls quiet quickly after that first weekend

:46:51. > :46:53.from two young women in particular who believed that they

:46:54. > :47:00.had actually been followed by the offender earlier on in the night.

:47:01. > :47:03.That directed our inquiries significantly because we then had

:47:04. > :47:08.two earlier sightings where we could actually hone in on that CCTV.

:47:09. > :47:13.We found images of the offender and it's those images that then

:47:14. > :47:16.became so synonymous with the investigation really of our offender

:47:17. > :47:23.So again all of this underlined to me just how dangerous

:47:24. > :47:26.an offender we were looking for a man who was absolutely intent

:47:27. > :47:32.With these new witnesses detectives now had two accounts

:47:33. > :47:42.We actually formed a composite description from both efits.

:47:43. > :47:45.We kind of morphed the two together and actually that

:47:46. > :47:50.efit, now knowing who the offender was that morphed efit image is

:47:51. > :48:00.We had the whole crime captured on CCTV,

:48:01. > :48:04.we had a DNA profile of the offender and then we have and efit that is

:48:05. > :48:09.almost absolutely spot on for his image and with all of the publicity

:48:10. > :48:17.that we put out there we still didn't have the offender's name.

:48:18. > :48:19.Police decided to make a nationwide appeal for

:48:20. > :48:40.I thought this offender has come from further, maybe another part

:48:41. > :48:44.of the UK, so it was kind of a no brainer for me to contact Crimewatch

:48:45. > :48:47.and to get the CCTV and all that information out there nationally.

:48:48. > :48:48.Despite generating leads, the programme didn't yield

:48:49. > :48:53.We had over 100 calls on the night but again ultimately

:48:54. > :49:02.not that one golden nugget that we needed to identify him.

:49:03. > :49:08.The man they were looking for had seemingly just disappeared.

:49:09. > :49:14.Detectives turned to specialist criminal profilers.

:49:15. > :49:21.This was a very, very public location

:49:22. > :49:25.This suggested that he hadn't lain in wait for the victim

:49:26. > :49:28.at this location he had simply encountered the victim and had taken

:49:29. > :49:34.advantage of the nearest potential location to commit the crime.

:49:35. > :49:37.Though it did seem to be a slightly more opportunistic attack.

:49:38. > :49:41.The fact that a victim can be chosen almost at random it's more likely

:49:42. > :49:44.that the geographical location will be related to that offender in some

:49:45. > :49:47.way, be close to where he lives or where he works, or where his friends

:49:48. > :49:51.live or other people that he knows. The CCTV was really important

:49:52. > :50:00.in this case, the fact that we were able to track the offender from the

:50:01. > :50:04.city centre to the scene we are then able to see how he approaches the

:50:05. > :50:07.scene, where he goes having committed

:50:08. > :50:10.the offence That then helped me to make some inferences about where he

:50:11. > :50:13.may have been going from and where he may have been going to.

:50:14. > :50:20.With this in mind officers carried out a targeted DNA swabbing exercise

:50:21. > :50:24.They didn't know at the time how close they'd come to

:50:25. > :50:31.The gut feeling of the detective was this guy looks

:50:32. > :50:40.The DNA came back as not being a match.

:50:41. > :50:52.The officer still had a bad feeling about him, but of course the DNA is

:50:53. > :50:56.at times I have to say because I had all the scientific work that was

:50:57. > :50:59.ongoing, I had profilers working for me, I had lots of staff

:51:00. > :51:05.So we started to wonder what is it that we can do here that we're not

:51:06. > :51:08.already doing and I always had the feeling that

:51:09. > :51:17.The manhunt was about to go international.

:51:18. > :51:20.I'd gone to Interpol and asked them to launch that DNA

:51:21. > :51:27.profile far and wide, but the system is frustratingly slow.

:51:28. > :51:31.So myself and colleagues we sat in my office and we said right, if

:51:32. > :51:35.you were to come to Britain for a better life, where do you think you

:51:36. > :51:45.The following day we engaged with all of these European embassies who

:51:46. > :51:48.all have police attaches and we said to the police attaches

:51:49. > :51:53.here's our DNA profile can you physically do a check for us now.

:51:54. > :51:55.Within three days Detectives had a match.

:51:56. > :52:03.They could finally put a name to this face.

:52:04. > :52:07.We got a phone call from the Slovakian embassy to say

:52:08. > :52:17.he's a match for a guy call Zdenko Turtak, he's your man,

:52:18. > :52:22.Of course that was a telephone call I will never ever forget receiving.

:52:23. > :52:25.Turtak had been living and working in Leeds for four years.

:52:26. > :52:27.He'd been living a very much hand to mouth existence.

:52:28. > :52:31.He'd been working in car washes all cash in hand.

:52:32. > :52:35.I assumed wrongly that the offender would have had a history of

:52:36. > :52:38.offending, but in this case Zdenko Turtak two or three convictions

:52:39. > :52:41.for minor theft offences in Slovakia and had absolutely no contact with

:52:42. > :53:03.Detectives established he had been staying with his brother The very

:53:04. > :53:07.man that had been under suspicion but whose DNA didn't match.

:53:08. > :53:11.That piece of the jigsaw slotted in perfectly then because

:53:12. > :53:13.Zdenko Turtak was living no more than about 200 metres

:53:14. > :53:17.So the profiler was absolutely spot on.

:53:18. > :53:21.The problem was Turtak was no longer in the UK,

:53:22. > :53:31.We came really, really close, but of course a miss is as good as a mile.

:53:32. > :53:38.After being granted a European arrest warrant,

:53:39. > :53:46.Slovakian police traced him to a Roma settlement called Velka Ida.

:53:47. > :53:48.Slovakian police executed the warrant for us, successfully

:53:49. > :53:54.Officers from here went out to Bratislava, took him on a plane back

:53:55. > :54:04.to the UK and he was brought into custody at Leeds police station.

:54:05. > :54:08.That was a major highlight of the investigation knowing that

:54:09. > :54:10.we actually had him now back within out jurisdiction

:54:11. > :54:16.and that he could become part of the British judicial process.

:54:17. > :54:19.It felt like a weight had been lifted not just from my shoulders

:54:20. > :54:22.but from the investigation team's shoulders that we had got out man

:54:23. > :54:27.To use a metaphor I suppose it was like a dark cloud being lifted

:54:28. > :54:39.Aged just 22, Zdenko Turtak pleaded guilty to rape

:54:40. > :54:44.and grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to twenty years.

:54:45. > :54:47.He will serve at least two thirds of his sentence in the UK before

:54:48. > :54:54.The judge in the comments that he made really powerfully told him

:54:55. > :54:57.that in those eight minutes that the offence had lasted he had robbed

:54:58. > :55:10.So for us to actually be able to reassure her and say to her he is

:55:11. > :55:14.in a maximum security prison in the UK and there is no prospect of him

:55:15. > :55:25.getting out for some years to come, that is a crumb of comfort and

:55:26. > :55:30.There was no bigger investigation in West Yorkshire and there hadn't been

:55:31. > :55:33.for some years before this and the message is there is no hiding place.
