:00:08. > :00:15.Tonight, the 79-year-old widow who died after she was mugged in broad

:00:15. > :00:18.daylight, just yards from her home. No, no, please leave me alone!

:00:18. > :00:23.was found still clutching the handle of the bag which contained

:00:23. > :00:27.her husband's ashes. She wouldn't have let go of her bag. She

:00:28. > :00:32.wouldn't even forget him going from one room to another, let alone let

:00:32. > :00:42.go of her bag for anybody to take it. Tell us who killed Nellie

:00:42. > :00:59.

:00:59. > :01:02.Hello and welcome to Crimewatch. We're going to bring you the full

:01:02. > :01:06.story of what happened to Nellie Geraghty very soon. But first,

:01:06. > :01:10.let's look at tonight's other appeals. As ever, we have a studio

:01:10. > :01:14.full of detectives just ready to take your call. They want to

:01:14. > :01:20.identify the gang of armed robbers who struck a village Post Office in

:01:20. > :01:30.Nottinghamshire. I saw a gun. Open the safe! No, I

:01:30. > :01:36.can't. I ended up on the floor. just who murdered 77-year-old rer

:01:36. > :01:41.tired teacher Betty Yates at her remote cottage. The investigating

:01:41. > :01:45.officers need your help to identify who, last week, sent anonymous

:01:45. > :01:49.letters, containing important details of the case.

:01:49. > :01:57.And we'll have some remarkable CCTV. Look at this footage, showing the

:01:57. > :02:02.moment a gang burst into a mini cab office in North London.

:02:02. > :02:07.Also, police need to know who could have killed a man in Worcester by

:02:07. > :02:15.deliberately setting fire to his flat.

:02:15. > :02:19.Help! I just can't imagine what it would have felt like, for him,

:02:19. > :02:24.struggling probably to get out of the flat and knowing he couldn't.

:02:24. > :02:28.Matthew's here with the latest news on previous cases. Yes, including

:02:28. > :02:32.an arrest and charge in the case of 15-year-old Mo Bourner who was

:02:32. > :02:36.critically injured after being attacked in Bexhill in Sussex. And

:02:36. > :02:41.I'll have the inside story of how an ingenious bluff by detectives in

:02:41. > :02:48.North Wales led to the capture of a cunning murderer.

:02:48. > :02:52.He was watching us digging the field. Little did he know we were

:02:52. > :02:58.also watching what he was doing at exactly the same time. And can you

:02:58. > :03:01.help to track down a priceless collection of Scottish coins? Stole

:03:01. > :03:06.anyone what police think was a targeted raid, some of them are

:03:06. > :03:10.more than 900 years old. Before all of that, I need to tell

:03:10. > :03:15.you about a couple of appeals to track down escaped prisoners. First,

:03:15. > :03:19.detectives in Staffordshire are urgently trying to trace 31-year-

:03:19. > :03:23.old John Anslow, who escaped from a prison van near Bromsgrove on

:03:23. > :03:27.Monday. Anslow was being transported from Hewell Grange

:03:27. > :03:30.prison, where he was on remand after being charged with the murder

:03:30. > :03:35.of father of one Richard Deakin who was shot in Staffordshire of July

:03:35. > :03:41.2010. The prison van was attacked by three masked men carrying sledge

:03:41. > :03:48.hammers, who got out of this silver Volkswagen Scirocco. The gang

:03:48. > :03:53.switched to a silver Mercedes, police believe it may have been a

:03:54. > :03:58.C-Class model with partial plate KR 11. That happened in Stoney Lane.

:03:58. > :04:01.There's a 10,000 award leading to Anslow's arrest and return to

:04:01. > :04:08.prison. If you have information call Staffordshire Police

:04:08. > :04:17.information room: if you see him, don't approach him. Just call 999

:04:17. > :04:25.immediately. Police in Suffolk are looking for 26-year-old Tim Farron

:04:25. > :04:30.-- Andrew Farand on who escaped yesterday. He escaped while being

:04:30. > :04:34.escorted to hospital last night. He was serving a sentence for GBH. He

:04:35. > :04:40.had a longer hair and goatee beard when he escaped. Call Suffolk

:04:40. > :04:47.Police if you have information. If you see this man, call 999

:04:47. > :04:53.immediately. More details about both these appeals on our website.

:04:53. > :04:58.Time now to go back to our first reconstruction of tonight. The

:04:58. > :05:01.fatal mugging of 79-year-old widow Nellie Geraghty. It happened in

:05:01. > :05:11.November, where she lived in Shaw, just outside Oldham in Greater

:05:11. > :05:28.

:05:28. > :05:32.79-year-old Nellie Geraghty's whole life revolved around this small

:05:33. > :05:38.community of Shaw, just outside Oldham. It's also where her life

:05:38. > :05:46.ended two months ago, when she was attacked, mugged and left for dead

:05:46. > :05:51.still clutching the broken handle of her handbag.

:05:51. > :05:57.Nellie was a devoted mother and grandmother and had been happily

:05:57. > :06:05.married to her husband franc since 1953. His death, 17 years ago, had

:06:05. > :06:09.left her bereft. When he died she wouldn't go out anywhere. She

:06:09. > :06:12.wouldn't, she didn't like people going to the house to visit her.

:06:12. > :06:19.Ever since his death, Nellie carried her husband's ashes with

:06:19. > :06:24.her everywhere. We've never referred to the ashes as ashes.

:06:24. > :06:29.It's always been "franc quts ". When he came back from the

:06:29. > :06:36.crematorium, he was in quite a big box. She made covers for it. She

:06:36. > :06:43.had to have a bag big enough for franc to fit in. She's never gone

:06:43. > :06:47.anywhere without him. Late morning on Thursday, 24

:06:47. > :06:53.November, Nellie left her home to go to meet some friends at her

:06:53. > :06:59.local Community Centre, just a few minutes' walk away. She was

:06:59. > :07:04.normally quite a reserved, quiet person, but she did like company as

:07:04. > :07:10.well, especially in the winter. She would go, you know, that was a nice

:07:10. > :07:17.time for her to go and visit the people that lived around her.

:07:17. > :07:24.journey would have taken her along Elizabeth Grove. And as always,

:07:24. > :07:29.Nellie had her handbag, containing her late husband's ashes. We know

:07:30. > :07:39.she entered the alleyway at the end of Elizabeth Grove at 11.50. But

:07:40. > :07:43.

:07:43. > :07:46.she never made it to the other end. Please, leave me alone. A few

:07:46. > :07:51.minutes later, a passer-by discovered Nellie. She was semi-

:07:51. > :07:56.conscious and barely breathing. She still had the handle of her handbag,

:07:56. > :08:02.but the rest had been snatched and with it her husband's ashes. She

:08:02. > :08:06.was rushed to hospital, but she died the next day. Just after 12

:08:06. > :08:15.o'clock the phone rang and they said "Can you get to us, as soon as

:08:15. > :08:19.possible? "She's going fast. By the time I'd got there, she'd gone.

:08:19. > :08:23.The shocking nature of Nellie's death made headline news.

:08:23. > :08:28.elderly widow has died after trying to stop a mugger stealing her

:08:28. > :08:32.handbag in which she kept her husband's ashes for 17 years.

:08:32. > :08:38.And many in the local community turned out to look for Nellie's

:08:38. > :08:41.handbag and Frank's ashes. Despite the best efforts of local residents

:08:41. > :08:47.and specialist forensic officers Nellie's bag has still not been

:08:47. > :08:52.found and her killer is still at large.

:08:52. > :08:56.At 79, Nellie was physically tiny, just after five foot tall. Her

:08:57. > :09:00.family and police are convinced when she was confronted in this

:09:00. > :09:04.alley, she desperately tried to fight off her attacker.

:09:04. > :09:08.wouldn't have let go of her bag. She wouldn't have gone, she would

:09:08. > :09:14.never, she wouldn't even forget him going from one room to another, let

:09:14. > :09:18.alone get go of her bag for anybody to take it. Detective Chief

:09:18. > :09:22.Inspector Joanne Rawlinson is leading the investigation. Nellie

:09:22. > :09:25.was determined to hang onto her bag, but she was just physically

:09:25. > :09:32.overwhelmed, wasn't she? Yes, when we found her she was still holding

:09:32. > :09:35.onto the handle. That's actually been damaged. It's not merely fell

:09:35. > :09:40.off from the handbag. It's damaged significantly. It shows the level

:09:40. > :09:43.of strength and fight she's put up to keep hold of the bag. Take me

:09:43. > :09:47.through her injuries. She had a significant injury to the back of

:09:47. > :09:51.her head, one to her forehead. She's also got some area of heavy

:09:51. > :09:56.bruising to her right shoulder and down the right arm, which is the

:09:56. > :10:01.arm we knew she carried her handbag in. The investigation continues,

:10:01. > :10:05.but Nellie's family have been left grieving the death of a mother and

:10:05. > :10:12.the loss of a father. She wanted to be with my dad. She was waiting for

:10:12. > :10:20.her time to be with him. He was her life. That's why she fought for him

:10:20. > :10:24.and that's why she's not with us. It's heart breaking. DCI Joanne

:10:25. > :10:27.Rawlinson, you saw her there and she's joined us now. It's very

:10:27. > :10:30.important to stress, you're treating this as a murder

:10:30. > :10:35.investigation. People should also remember this was an elderly

:10:35. > :10:37.vulnerable lady attacked in broad daylight. Yes. Nellie went to a

:10:38. > :10:41.local Community Centre every Tuesday and Thursday for lunch. She

:10:41. > :10:46.was attacked just 100 yards from her front door. She was left with a

:10:46. > :10:50.severe head injury, which shows the level of force used. The handbag

:10:50. > :10:54.hasn't been recovered or the ashes. No, we have the strap of the bag.

:10:54. > :11:00.It's a black, shoulder bag. You can see the strap has been damaged. But

:11:00. > :11:06.the handbag is still missing. We know that Frank's ashes were in a

:11:06. > :11:12.container which Nellie kept in a blue velour pouch similar to this.

:11:12. > :11:18.Also inside her bag was a green Spiral cord and a pink wallet with

:11:18. > :11:22.ocean village on it. Nellie had sewn that blue pouch with her own

:11:22. > :11:25.hands. You're looking for people to come forward, that's crucial.

:11:25. > :11:30.anyone with any information please come forward. Specifically, I want

:11:30. > :11:35.to speak to two youths who I know were on Elizabeth Grove and a man

:11:35. > :11:38.that was stood with a child in the garden of 8 Victoria Street. I

:11:38. > :11:44.believe they have vital information. There's a bike you think might be

:11:44. > :11:49.important. Yes there was a bike seen in the area on CCTV. We've

:11:49. > :11:52.recreated an image to show you what we believe it looks like. It's a

:11:52. > :11:57.black framed mountain bike. We believe the wheels and spokes had

:11:57. > :12:01.been spray painted a pinkie, orange colour, very distinctive. There's a

:12:01. > :12:06.reward, yeah? There's a 5,000 reward for any information that

:12:06. > :12:10.leads to the successful recovery of the handbag and ashes or a

:12:10. > :12:13.successful prosecution. Thank you. It's truly unbelievable. Nellie's

:12:13. > :12:16.family at the least deserve to know who did this and they are desperate,

:12:16. > :12:26.of course, for the ashes to be returned. If you can help, you must

:12:26. > :12:30.

:12:30. > :12:33.do the right thing. Call now: Call Crimestoppers anonymously: Matthew

:12:33. > :12:36.has tonight's first collection of wanted faces.

:12:36. > :12:39.First up is Ehsannullah Mohabat. The 18-year-old is wanted in

:12:39. > :12:43.connection with the murder of a butcher, who was stabbed in his

:12:43. > :12:46.shop in Wood Green in London last September. Mohabat has links to

:12:46. > :12:49.Gloucester, Leicester and Gloucester, Leicester and

:12:49. > :12:51.Birmingham as well as north London. There is a reward of up to 10,000

:12:51. > :12:54.for information leading to his arrest, but he is considered

:12:54. > :13:01.dangerous, so please, don't approach him, just call the police

:13:01. > :13:04.immediately. Next is Barry Robert Brunton. He is wanted in connection

:13:04. > :13:07.with indecent assaults on a child in Bishops Stortford in

:13:07. > :13:10.Hertfordshire, dating back to the '70s. Now this is an image of him

:13:10. > :13:20.as he was then, but police have used age progression technology to

:13:20. > :13:20.

:13:20. > :13:23.show how he might look now. 63- year-old Brunton - who has used the

:13:23. > :13:29.names Barry and Dennis Roberts - has links to The Isle of Wight,

:13:29. > :13:32.Norfolk, and Cambridge. Number three is Jason McKenzie-Paul.

:13:32. > :13:35.Police want to speak to him about a large-scale conspiracy to supply

:13:35. > :13:38.heroin worth more than 400,000. Mckenzie-Paul, who has links across

:13:38. > :13:43.London and Essex, uses the street name 'J Money' which he has

:13:43. > :13:51.tattooed on his upper left arm. The 25-year old, who usually wears

:13:51. > :13:54.glasses, is also interested in martial arts. And lastly for now is

:13:54. > :13:57.Abdulsamda Ahmed Raza who is known as Samad. The 25-year-old Kurdish

:13:57. > :14:01.national is wanted in connection with the rape of a 13-year-old girl

:14:01. > :14:11.in Llanelli last month. Raza has links to Stoke on Trent, Leeds,

:14:11. > :14:15.

:14:15. > :14:25.All tonight's faces are on the website. If you know where they are

:14:25. > :14:30.

:14:30. > :14:36.In an effort to live a quieter life, Sarah and David Draisey took on the

:14:36. > :14:39.business of running a business post office and shopping cherubs in

:14:39. > :14:43.Nottinghamshire. As well as their place of work it is also the

:14:43. > :14:47.couple's home but on an evening in November there peace was shattered

:14:47. > :14:57.when two armed robbers burst in and used extreme violence to get what

:14:57. > :15:17.

:15:17. > :15:20.This is Shireoaks, near Worksop, in Nottinghamshire. It is a quiet

:15:20. > :15:24.village, the last place the residents might expect to be the

:15:24. > :15:30.scene of a vicious armed robbery. But this is exactly what happened

:15:30. > :15:35.at this small Post Office in November of last year. We had moved

:15:35. > :15:39.to Shireoaks about ten years ago. We run the business up until a

:15:39. > :15:43.couple of years ago as it was, and newsagents shop and post office,

:15:43. > :15:49.and unfortunately Dave got diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

:15:49. > :15:56.We decided that we would get rid of the newsagent side and just run the

:15:56. > :16:04.shop and the Post Office to give Dave more time. Hello. Just that,

:16:04. > :16:12.police. It was a normal Wednesday. There was no reason whatsoever to

:16:12. > :16:22.expect anything untoward. I'm just taking him for a walk. I

:16:22. > :16:59.

:16:59. > :17:05.Shut up, or I will do you. Shut it, or I will do you. Shut up. Open the

:17:05. > :17:12.safe. I can't, I can't. Don't lie to me! I will kill you. It is my

:17:12. > :17:20.wife who does it, I can't do it. Getting in there, wait for your

:17:20. > :17:24.missus. You had better not be lying to us. Come on. Sit up. One of the

:17:24. > :17:33.pair ransacked the bungalow, taking around 400 of the couple's own

:17:33. > :17:37.money. I had been out about 20 minutes. I opened the door and the

:17:37. > :17:47.dog came dashing in but this time he dashed in Barking. What is it

:17:47. > :17:49.

:17:49. > :17:59.with you? Stay there! Shut up! Shut your dog up or I will shoot it.

:17:59. > :18:07.

:18:07. > :18:10.Come on. Open the safe. Open the The attacker grabbed bundles of

:18:10. > :18:20.cash and unregistered tax discs from the Post Office's sake. Come

:18:20. > :18:31.

:18:31. > :18:41.on. Before taking the keys to David's are. -- car. Get down. Come

:18:41. > :18:57.

:18:57. > :19:05.The car the attackers used for the getaway was low on fuel but the men

:19:05. > :19:15.did not need to get far. The couple's distinctive Jeep Cherokee

:19:15. > :19:19.

:19:19. > :19:23.was found abandoned just a five- Did you see the gang swap cars? We

:19:23. > :19:31.need to know how they made their escape from here and what direction

:19:32. > :19:35.they took. You can get through a day without thinking about it and

:19:35. > :19:44.then something will trigger it off and you just become an emotional

:19:44. > :19:48.wreck. I have got Parkinson's but I never shook as much as I do now. It

:19:48. > :19:54.is 15% worse than it was. Apart from the shock and trauma of having

:19:54. > :20:01.somebody standing pointing a gun at you, it was the aggression. It is

:20:01. > :20:10.unspeakably scary. He had a gun, the next bloke came through with a

:20:10. > :20:14.hammer. I ended up on the floor. People in the village have been

:20:14. > :20:22.wonderful. But we don't want to stay any more. It is up for sale.

:20:22. > :20:32.We have got to get out and have a nice, normal, quiet life, like we

:20:32. > :20:32.

:20:32. > :20:36.Well, we are joined by Diame Ash Wilson from Nottinghamshire Police.

:20:36. > :20:40.You saw him in the reconstruction. It was unspeakably scary, a

:20:40. > :20:44.terrifying attack for the couple? Yes, and a completely unnecessary

:20:44. > :20:48.level of violence used. David was not capable of giving any physical

:20:48. > :20:53.resistance at all, completely necessary. They have also

:20:53. > :20:57.threatened to shoot the couple's dock. Thankfully the Post Office

:20:58. > :21:00.have significantly increased the security since that time. You are

:21:00. > :21:04.interested in the possibility of witnesses coming forward who might

:21:04. > :21:09.have seemed a gang swap cars after the robbery? Yes, the vehicle, a

:21:09. > :21:13.Jeep Cherokee, was abandoned on the A57 northbound, known locally as

:21:13. > :21:17.Shireoaks roundabout. This was about 6pm on the day of the

:21:17. > :21:20.incident. Someone will have seen these people get out of the car and

:21:20. > :21:24.possibly into another car and it is those people I would appeal to come

:21:24. > :21:29.forward. What about the way the robbers got into the property? That

:21:29. > :21:33.was unusual? Yes, almost an old- fashioned way of gaining entry.

:21:33. > :21:37.They have actually drilled through a wooden frame to the rear window

:21:37. > :21:42.and gained entry that way, it indicates to me they have some

:21:42. > :21:47.criminal knowledge. A do you think they were sticking out, watching

:21:47. > :21:51.the property beforehand? We have a reconstruction to show but we know

:21:51. > :21:56.a male was seen about six night before at the rear of a neighbour's

:21:56. > :21:59.property but importantly that leads to the post office at the back.

:21:59. > :22:03.That person has not come forward as yet and I would dearly like to

:22:03. > :22:10.speak to them. As well as a bundle of cash, these guys took tax discs

:22:10. > :22:14.as well. Yes, 15 Tests in total, 14 that expire at the end of April

:22:14. > :22:19.this year ran one at the end of November -- tax discs. The serial

:22:19. > :22:23.numbers are on the Crimewatch website. The serial numbers that we

:22:23. > :22:27.were talking about on the tax discs are available in detail on the

:22:27. > :22:31.website. If you do have any of those which were stolen we would

:22:31. > :22:35.urge you to get in touch. There is a 10,000 reward offered for

:22:35. > :22:38.information leading to a conviction. Sarah and David's lives have been

:22:38. > :22:46.terribly affected by the terrific robbery. If you know anything about

:22:46. > :22:51.it, please do the right thing. Call us. Now, Matthew has some CCTV for

:22:51. > :22:55.you to take a look at. We start with a shocking footage

:22:55. > :23:02.from the summer riots, a terrifying attack on a minicab office in north

:23:03. > :23:06.London. It is just after midnight on 9th August last year. Inside the

:23:06. > :23:11.foyer or of a CAB farm in Chalk Farm and a gang of looters is

:23:11. > :23:14.trying to break in. They eventually managed to force the law can swarm

:23:14. > :23:19.into the tiny office, where two terrified members of staff are

:23:19. > :23:23.trapped. They plead with them to stop but a savage it -- but are

:23:23. > :23:33.savagely punched and kicked in the head. The rioters attacked the

:23:33. > :23:35.

:25:45. > :25:48.The start with some news on a case from our last programme. We asked

:25:48. > :25:51.for information about an attack on 15-year-old Moore -- Mo Bourner,

:25:51. > :25:56.who was critically injured after being punched in the head. He made

:26:03. > :26:06.in October. At 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged with GBH.

:26:06. > :26:10.Mo has since turned 16 and I am sure you will be pleased to hear

:26:10. > :26:13.his condition is improving. He is now able to communicate with his

:26:18. > :26:21.Next, a case we featured four years ago. Football fan AJ Clarke was

:26:21. > :26:27.killed after being punched in the street in Liverpool city centre in

:26:27. > :26:32.November 2007. We showed you this CCTV of the man police believed was

:26:32. > :26:36.responsible for the death. Earlier this month that man, 25-year-old

:26:36. > :26:39.Malik Al-Brumy from their fields in Liverpool, was convicted of

:26:39. > :26:44.manslaughter and sentenced to five years in prison -- Fairfield in

:27:02. > :27:07.prison sentence, a curfew and he will remain on the sex offenders

:27:10. > :27:16.who attacked a good Samaritan who had intervened to stop an assault

:27:16. > :27:20.on a train in London in 20th June ten. As a direct result of calls to

:27:25. > :27:30.Tibbs from Essex and last month he was given 240 hours of community

:27:35. > :27:39.thanks for all those crucial calls. Yes, good news. Still to come

:28:05. > :28:10.And we have the fascinating story of how detectives cracked a

:28:11. > :28:13.seemingly impossible murder case. We were dealing with one of the

:28:13. > :28:16.most difficult cases you will ever deal with. We did not have a body,

:28:16. > :28:22.we did not have any witnesses and we did not have any forensic

:28:26. > :28:32.the latest on what has been happening on the phones so far.

:28:32. > :28:36.Thank you, it is busy. That's interrupt the person leading the

:28:36. > :28:39.hunt for Nellie Geraghty. We have had a number of calls in relation

:28:39. > :28:42.to the hand back but I desperately need to speak to people about the

:28:42. > :28:46.man and child I have mentioned in the garden earlier and the two used

:28:46. > :28:51.on the Avenue and the bike. Have you had a bike like that stolen?

:28:51. > :28:55.This is such an appalling attack that has left a family devastate --

:28:55. > :29:01.devastated. We need to find the killer and the Ashes. Please give

:29:01. > :29:04.us a call. Thanks very much, good luck.

:29:04. > :29:08.An appeal now for information on a case you may have seen in the news.

:29:08. > :29:12.Just over three weeks ago retired schoolteacher Betty Yates was found

:29:12. > :29:16.dead at her remote riverside cottage next to the River Severn.

:29:16. > :29:21.Near Bewdley in Worcestershire. The 77-year-old widow had been stabbed

:29:21. > :29:24.and beaten with her own walking stick. Since her death officers

:29:24. > :29:28.have been carrying out extensive inquiries to try to establish who

:29:37. > :29:41.police received two anonymous letters containing information

:29:41. > :29:45.about Mrs Yates' death. Both letters had been typed and the one

:29:45. > :29:49.sent to Bewdley Police Station on Monday 16th January was in a

:29:49. > :29:53.handwritten on the leg. The other letter was sent via the local

:30:50. > :30:56.who has connections to Greenwich in London, has a deep scar on his left

:30:56. > :30:59.forefinger and a burn mark on his right wrist.

:30:59. > :31:01.Number six is Martin Wolstenholme, who is wanted in connection with a

:31:01. > :31:05.kidnap, which took place in Newcastle under Lyme in

:31:05. > :31:08.Staffordshire in November 2010. The 32-year-old has links to Stoke on

:31:08. > :31:15.Trent and to Southampton. Police consider Wolstenholme to be

:31:15. > :31:18.dangerous. If you know where he is, call the police immediately.

:31:18. > :31:22.Next is Florin Procs - although the police aren't convinced that's his

:31:22. > :31:25.real name. Detectives want to speak to the 23-year-old about a burglary

:31:25. > :31:28.in the West Midlands where cash and jewellery worth more than 20,000

:32:08. > :32:13.On the 13th December, 52-year-old Andrew Heath enjoyed supper with

:32:13. > :32:17.his down stairs neighbours, before going to bed as normal. Just a few

:32:17. > :32:21.hours later, she would wake to find his flat engulfed with flames. With

:32:21. > :32:25.his only exit blocked, he didn't stand a chance. Police are

:33:09. > :33:14.Worcester is all that remains of the life of Andrew Heath, a 52-

:33:14. > :33:18.year-old, who was murdered in an arson attack on his home just

:33:18. > :33:22.before Christmas. His friends and family have been left devastated by

:33:22. > :33:32.his untimely and terrifying death and have no idea why anyone would

:33:34. > :33:41.want to kill him. We adopted him, seven -month-old. We brought him up

:33:41. > :33:46.as our own. He was caring, kind, loving boy. He had a lot of friends.

:33:46. > :33:50.I don't think we could have wished for a better son. The fact that he

:33:50. > :33:54.was adopted made no difference at all. He was my brother. I think he

:33:54. > :33:59.started singing when he was at secondary school. He progressed to

:33:59. > :34:04.the male voice choir, which he loved. People liked to be round him.

:34:04. > :34:10.He was a big chap, with quite a big personality. He came out when he

:34:10. > :34:15.was 18. That would have been in the 70s. It wasn't an easy time to come

:34:15. > :34:20.out as a gay person. I think I was very proud of him that he'd done it.

:34:20. > :34:25.He had been in Worcester for a long time. He liked Worcester. He was

:34:25. > :34:33.very happy with his neighbours. They shared a good deal of their

:34:33. > :34:37.lives, I think, together. Andrew lived above us. We're ground floor.

:34:37. > :34:44.Every night, 8pm, he'd come down, knock the door, dog would bark,

:34:44. > :34:48.because she knew it was Andrew. Over the years, we've got closer

:34:48. > :34:53.and closer. He's like part of the family that. Particular night...

:34:53. > :35:00.was really cheerful that night. Yeah. He got up and said "I'll see

:35:00. > :35:03.you tomorrow. "That was last we saw of him. Andrew went upstairs to his

:35:03. > :35:13.flat just before 9pm, where the police think he spent the rest of

:35:13. > :35:25.

:35:25. > :35:35.I heard a noise. I thought it was just someone being a bit weird,

:35:35. > :35:59.

:35:59. > :36:08.like. I didn't take much notice of His only exit was engulfed in

:36:08. > :36:14.flames. Now all Andrew could do was call for help. Wake up. All of a

:36:14. > :36:24.sudden there was a loud shout. There was just general talking. I

:36:24. > :36:24.

:36:24. > :36:31.couldn't understand. Sue! Clive! All of a sudden, there was a thud,

:36:31. > :36:36.I said to Clive, "Andrew needs us now." Hello Fire Service. There's a

:36:36. > :36:44.fire outside my front door. I can't breathe. What's yaur dress please.

:36:44. > :36:49.Can you not get out? I went round to the front. All I

:36:49. > :36:59.could hear Clive shouting was "Andrew". I knew he couldn't be got

:36:59. > :37:20.

:37:20. > :37:27.I just stood there, just looking and in a daze really, not really

:37:27. > :37:32.knowing was it real? Was it a dream? It was just horrible. I just

:37:32. > :37:38.can't imagine what it would have felt like for him struggling

:37:38. > :37:45.probably to get out of the flat and knowing he couldn't. It must have

:37:45. > :37:50.been terrible. DCI Paul Williamson is

:37:50. > :37:54.investigating why someone would target Andrew. Paul, in the last

:37:54. > :37:58.few moments for Andrew, it must have been terrifying. Yes, we know

:37:58. > :38:02.from the 999 call Andrew knows the porch is on fire. The heat and

:38:02. > :38:06.smoke must have been unbearable. He's trapped inside the premises

:38:06. > :38:12.and desperately trying to get help. If you look at the way the fire was

:38:12. > :38:16.set in the porch, I mean, it effectively barricaded him in.

:38:16. > :38:20.the front doorway has been completely destroyed, as have the

:38:20. > :38:30.stairs. This makes me think it was a targeted attack on Andrew. The

:38:30. > :38:31.

:38:31. > :38:37.killer place aid wheelie bin in the porch, blocking off any escape.

:38:37. > :38:44.It felt as if somebody had eradicated every part of Andrew.

:38:44. > :38:51.There was very little left. I can't believe that somebody would have

:38:51. > :38:55.done this to Andrew. That's right. And I hope that, in a way, they'll

:38:55. > :39:05.be haunted by what he has done. Somebody couldn't have planned it

:39:05. > :39:06.

:39:06. > :39:09.any better really to hurt the most. A tragedy. DCI Paul Williamson from

:39:09. > :39:12.West Mercia Police is with me now. It happened in the middle of

:39:12. > :39:17.December. It was a horrendous Christmas for this family. You and

:39:17. > :39:23.your team are examining all sorts of motives. Yes, this has the hall

:39:23. > :39:26.marks of a really devastating attack on Andrew. We need to know

:39:26. > :39:29.what possible motives there may have been and we're exploring a

:39:29. > :39:33.number of possibilities as to why this occurred. Could this have been

:39:33. > :39:38.somebody owed him money? We know Andrew lent money to people and

:39:38. > :39:41.that may led to a dispute. Could somebody have fallen out with

:39:41. > :39:45.Andrew in the months leading up to the attack or could it be a grudge

:39:45. > :39:50.with something in his past or a religionship we don't know about?

:39:50. > :39:54.There were lots of people around. Noises were heard. It was busy on

:39:54. > :39:57.the estate that night. Yes, we know there's a group of people outside

:39:57. > :40:01.Andrew's flat, as well as raised voices in the early hours of the

:40:01. > :40:06.morning and particularly before the fire afrs are called. What were

:40:06. > :40:09.those people doing there? This bin, is it even a possibility that was a

:40:09. > :40:13.prank that went badly wrong? have to consider the fact that this

:40:13. > :40:17.could be a deliberate act by somebody intending to kill Andrew

:40:17. > :40:21.or it could also be somebody trying to upset or scare Andrew. But

:40:21. > :40:25.whoever did this must have realised the terrible consequences of their

:40:25. > :40:29.actions and I need answers to these questions for Andrew's family and

:40:29. > :40:33.friends who've been totally devastated by his death. Paul,

:40:33. > :40:38.thanks very much. It was a terrible way to die. You heard Andrew making

:40:38. > :40:40.the phone call there. He knew there was no escape. There is a 10,000

:40:40. > :40:43.reward if you can provide police with information that results in

:40:43. > :40:51.the arrest and conviction of the people who did it. If you can help,

:40:51. > :40:54.call the detectives here: Now, it's time to look at more CCTV. Here's

:40:54. > :41:04.Matthew. We start with a brutal assault in

:41:04. > :41:08.Warwickshire. It's closing time at coco's nightclub in Leamington spay

:41:08. > :41:13.on a Wednesday night last June. As the clubbers gather on the street,

:41:13. > :41:16.one group seems intent on trouble. Some of the nip off down an alley

:41:16. > :41:23.and into a building site where at least two arm themselves with

:41:23. > :41:28.bricks. Back on the street, one of the men immediately lunges at his

:41:28. > :41:34.victim smashing him in the face with the brick, before legging it,

:41:34. > :41:41.slapping a woman as he did. The victim's eye socket was fractured.

:41:41. > :41:44.Can you name the brick thrower? A security guard keeps watch at a

:41:44. > :41:47.technology firm in Staffordshire during the early hours of a

:41:47. > :41:52.Thursday morning last August. Suddenly a brick is hurled through

:41:52. > :41:57.the glass doors, followed immediately by a gang of 17 people,

:41:57. > :42:00.all wearing hoodies, some wielding hammers knives and even fence posts.

:42:00. > :42:04.The terrified guard is hand cuffed and forced to the floor behind his

:42:04. > :42:08.desk, while the gang rampage round the building. They grab laptops and

:42:08. > :42:12.TVs off the walls, stuffing their loot into a duvet cover before

:42:13. > :42:22.making off. You can't see their faces, but someone know who's did

:42:23. > :42:24.

:42:24. > :42:30.this. Give us some names tonight. This is the Co-op store in washway

:42:30. > :42:34.Road in Sale near Manchester. It's 6.30pm last May. After parking his

:42:34. > :42:38.bike outside, a balding man in a dark top walks in and wanders round.

:42:38. > :42:42.He seems to have forgotten his shopping list. After much

:42:42. > :42:46.deliberation he finally chooses a cream egg.

:42:46. > :42:50.He queues up and pays for his treat, before whipping out what appears to

:42:50. > :42:57.be a gun wrapped in a bag and threatening to kill the terrified

:42:57. > :42:59.cash ear. The attacker reaches over the counter and grabs handfuls of

:42:59. > :43:07.notes from the till before running off.

:43:08. > :43:11.Now, we need to find this guy - name please.

:43:11. > :43:21.All the CCTV stays online till they're caught. If you recognise

:43:21. > :43:25.anyone, you know what to do: Now it's worth remembering that the

:43:25. > :43:28.vast majority of murder investigations in this country are

:43:28. > :43:32.eventually solved, but of course, some are far more straightforward

:43:32. > :43:37.than others. And when police suspect murder, but there are no

:43:37. > :43:47.witnesses, no forensics and not even a body, well then detectives

:43:47. > :43:55.

:43:55. > :44:02.really have got their work cut out When Ermatati Rodgers dais peered

:44:02. > :44:06.from her home in North Wales in January 2008, police suspected foul

:44:06. > :44:09.play. The problem was they had no way of proving it.

:44:09. > :44:15.We were dealing with what is probably one of the most difficult

:44:15. > :44:19.cases you'll ever deal with, which is a murder with no body. What

:44:19. > :44:26.followed was a cat-and-mouse chase between detectives and the man who

:44:26. > :44:33.almost got away with murder. First we were asked to look at an

:44:33. > :44:35.ongoing high risk missing person case into a 42-year-old Indonesian

:44:35. > :44:42.female called Ermatati Rodgers. She lived in the Wrexham area for a

:44:42. > :44:45.number of years. It was highly unusual behaviour for Ermatati to

:44:45. > :44:49.go missing. She hadn't called anyone or been seen in her house.

:44:49. > :44:54.The way she left her house with food preparing on the cooking stove

:44:54. > :45:03.made it look like she just disappeared.

:45:03. > :45:06.A police trawl of her contacts led detectives to a Polish friend of

:45:07. > :45:11.her Mr Respondek. They soon established he was the last person

:45:11. > :45:16.to see her before she went missing. You're always looking closely at

:45:16. > :45:21.the last person to see the missing person alive. When police

:45:21. > :45:31.questioned Respondek his story seemed plausible. He admitted

:45:31. > :45:37.

:45:37. > :45:41.seeing Ermatati and said he had That was the last time I saw her.

:45:41. > :45:47.Police tried to investigate but here, where Respondek claimed to

:45:47. > :45:52.have dropped her off, is as CCTV blind spot. There was no way of

:45:52. > :45:58.checking his story either way. But when they examined his laptop

:45:58. > :46:02.police found something much more concerning. You're not going to

:46:02. > :46:07.believe this. We found a number of search terms that had been put in

:46:07. > :46:10.and these included prettification, rot, decay, and organisms --

:46:10. > :46:14.organisms that feed off dead bodies and when I saw that I could not

:46:14. > :46:17.believe what I was seeing. These search terms had been putting in

:46:17. > :46:21.Polish and Wikipedia. Why would so there'd be doing that if they were

:46:21. > :46:24.innocent? Detectives made Respondek the main focus of their

:46:24. > :46:29.investigations and they soon made what looked like another major

:46:29. > :46:34.breakthrough. When we did the checks on his banking transactions,

:46:34. > :46:37.credit card, debit card, we found on the Saturday morning, the day

:46:37. > :46:42.after Ermatati Rodgers was last seen he had gone into town early,

:46:42. > :46:46.bought a suitcase, a shovel and a knife cumbersome gloves and some

:46:46. > :46:51.plastic sheeting, in effect what he had bought was a shopping list to

:46:51. > :46:56.get rid of the body. But a search of Respondek's House revealed

:46:56. > :47:01.things were not going to be that simple. Unbelievably in the house

:47:01. > :47:05.we found these items apparently unused. We just -- we could not

:47:05. > :47:08.believe for we were seeing. From being at a point where we thought

:47:08. > :47:13.we had a breakthrough here, to going straight back down again,

:47:13. > :47:18.these items are in the house, he hasn't used them at all. Detectives

:47:18. > :47:22.felt sure Respondek was deceiving them so they began the painstaking

:47:22. > :47:27.trawl of his movements. We found that he had made a withdrawal of

:47:27. > :47:33.cash on the day after the detectives had seen him. We checked

:47:33. > :47:38.CCTV footage in the local hardware store and amazingly he was there,

:47:38. > :47:43.actually buying the same shovel he had bought on the Saturday again,

:47:43. > :47:47.just four or five days later but this time for cash. Knowing that

:47:47. > :47:51.police checks on his debit card would reveal his incriminating

:47:51. > :47:59.purchases, Respondek had gone out and bought Duplicate items to cover

:47:59. > :48:03.his tracks. Alarmed by this devious behaviour, police began to

:48:04. > :48:09.formulate a theory Respondek and Ermatati Rodgers had been having a

:48:09. > :48:12.secret affair but might this affair have led to her murder? We had all

:48:12. > :48:15.this circumstantial evidence, however, there was three

:48:15. > :48:20.significant things we did not have. We did not have a body, we did not

:48:20. > :48:24.have any witnesses and we did not have any forensic evidence.

:48:24. > :48:30.Respondek was put under surveillance. Stand by. A year into

:48:30. > :48:33.the investigation it was clear he was feeling the pressure.

:48:33. > :48:38.Respondek's appearance changed significantly over the course of

:48:38. > :48:41.the inquiry. He looked like a man on the edge, he looked very nervous.

:48:41. > :48:46.Someone who knew that the net was closing in on him and it was only a

:48:46. > :48:53.matter of time before he would be caught. Police intelligence showed

:48:53. > :48:58.Respondek was making regular visits to the estate just outside Wrexham

:48:58. > :49:02.and he had labelled the area on his sat nav with a two letter code

:49:02. > :49:07.which seemed to resemble the victim's nickname. It was the

:49:07. > :49:10.police's last chance. They had to take a gamble. A major search of

:49:10. > :49:14.farmland in Wrexham is being carried out a Knight we publicised

:49:14. > :49:18.it in the press and we wanted everyone to know what we were doing

:49:18. > :49:23.but most significantly we wanted Respondek to know what we were

:49:23. > :49:28.doing. They are treating the case as a murder inquiry. But what

:49:28. > :49:32.seemed like an exciting new lead was in fact an elaborate bluff by

:49:32. > :49:36.detectives. The dig, the search teams, the press reports, were all

:49:36. > :49:45.set up by police to convince Respondek they knew where the body

:49:45. > :49:49.was. It was a trick to force him into making a mistake. Ross Pendock

:49:49. > :49:53.-- Respondek's behaviour was becoming more erratic. He had gone

:49:53. > :49:56.out and bought a camouflage jacket, hat, a pair of binoculars, and he

:49:56. > :50:01.concealed himself in trees and undergrowth not far away from where

:50:01. > :50:04.we were digging. He was watching us digging the fields, but little did

:50:04. > :50:09.he know that we were watching exactly what he was doing at the

:50:09. > :50:13.same site. By now Respondek was spending around eight hours a day

:50:13. > :50:19.watching the police but time was running out for the hoax Dick and

:50:19. > :50:26.detectives were still no closer to finding the body. What happened

:50:26. > :50:31.next was unbelievable, really. We actually saw him leaving his house

:50:31. > :50:36.with a garden spade and fork and driving back to the location. Then

:50:36. > :50:40.we picked him up on cameras actually going down into the lanes,

:50:40. > :50:46.looking behind him to see if he was being followed. This was a guy who

:50:46. > :50:51.was really spooked now and we knew he must be close. Respondek headed

:50:51. > :50:56.for the estate, panicked that the next day's diggers would unearth

:50:56. > :51:01.his guilty secret. But he was not prepared for the heavy clay soil

:51:01. > :51:05.which had preserved the body over the 14 months since her murder. And

:51:05. > :51:13.which had already -- also locked it firmly into the ground. After three

:51:14. > :51:18.hours of digging, he was defeated. In the early hours of the following

:51:18. > :51:24.morning, Respondek walked into at Wrexham police station and told

:51:25. > :51:28.officers he wanted to take them to the body of Ermatati Rodgers.

:51:28. > :51:32.Pathologists found no underlying natural illness or disease that

:51:32. > :51:39.might have killed Ermatati Rodgers and identified the most likely

:51:39. > :51:43.cause of death as compression of the neck. Her body was in his house

:51:43. > :51:47.for some considerable time, at least probably 24 hours or so.

:51:47. > :51:51.Respondek had gone out, left the body in his house when he bought

:51:51. > :51:55.the items, but he had also come back and played games on line on

:51:55. > :51:59.his computer while her body was in his house. While he was deciding

:51:59. > :52:06.how he was going to get rid of the body. He waited until it was dark

:52:06. > :52:11.and used those items to dispose of her body in the fields. We may

:52:11. > :52:15.never know for certain why Ermatati Rodgers was killed but despite the

:52:15. > :52:21.baffling lack of evidence at the outset detectives took on her

:52:21. > :52:25.murderer in the ultimate test of nerve. It was this high risk bluff

:52:25. > :52:33.which led police both to her killer and to the place where he buried

:52:33. > :52:38.her body, here in the cold, North Wales clay. He always felt that he

:52:38. > :52:43.was one step ahead of us and that he was too clever to be caught. He

:52:43. > :52:47.lied throughout the investigation to cover his tracks and he was a

:52:47. > :52:51.cold, calculating person. I don't think that he thought we would keep

:52:51. > :52:57.on for as long as we did and ultimately I think that was his

:52:57. > :53:00.undoing. Matthew, we used to dealing with

:53:00. > :53:03.scums on this programme but not normally was perpetrated by the

:53:03. > :53:08.police. It was quite brilliant, a psychological con-trick which could

:53:08. > :53:13.not have worked any better. The police had very little that was

:53:13. > :53:16.concrete when they went public with this supposedly lead. Had Respondek

:53:16. > :53:20.not taken the bait he could have got away with it but they managed

:53:20. > :53:25.to get inside his head. That is what it came down to, a battle of

:53:25. > :53:27.wits in the end. It was, every time they hit a wall and they hit many

:53:27. > :53:31.in this investigation, they responded by thinking outside the

:53:31. > :53:36.box. The bluff was a good example. Another was when they used sniffer

:53:36. > :53:39.dogs, they carried out a covert operation to extract is cent. They

:53:39. > :53:43.had all the relevant authority to do it. He had no idea, he still

:53:43. > :53:46.doesn't, but last week the detectives and team were explaining

:53:46. > :53:51.to me exactly how they did it and obviously I can't repeat that, I

:53:51. > :53:54.wish I could, because it was incredibly clever, but that gave

:53:54. > :53:59.them the cent, the dogs used to turn but got them to within 100

:53:59. > :54:03.yards of where the body was found. What this did was pile more and

:54:03. > :54:08.more pressure on Respondek and eventually he cracked. Briefly, the

:54:08. > :54:12.sentence? Life with a minimum of 18 years. The judge ordered he be

:54:12. > :54:17.deported at the end of the sentenced to protect the public.

:54:17. > :54:21.Just take a look at this. It may be pretty small but it is incredibly

:54:21. > :54:25.rare and valuable and an important part of Scotland's heritage. Police

:54:25. > :54:31.are investigating the theft of an irreplaceable collection of coins

:54:31. > :54:35.including ones just like this one which was in total was almost half

:54:35. > :54:40.a million pounds. It is almost five years since they were taken and now

:54:40. > :54:45.police have decided to relaunch an appeal in the hope that the coins

:54:45. > :54:49.may have surfaced somewhere. It was me now is DCI Grant Dougall from

:54:49. > :54:53.Lothian and Borders police and also Philip Skingley, from Spink of

:54:53. > :54:58.London. Grant, can you tell me more about the case? The collection of

:54:58. > :55:04.more than 2000 coins were taken from the home of one of Scotland's

:55:04. > :55:08.leading coin experts. His house is in Broughton, a quiet village on

:55:09. > :55:14.the Scottish Borders and it took place overnight between the 6th and

:55:14. > :55:18.7th June in 2007. We believe it was a targeted raid because the thieves

:55:18. > :55:23.only took the coins and some jury that was stored with them. Philip,

:55:23. > :55:27.can you tell me, they look to the untrained eye like that they are

:55:27. > :55:31.fairly innocuous but what is so important? They are a unique pieces

:55:31. > :55:34.of history in their own right. Each one can tell us about the social

:55:34. > :55:37.and economic history of the period in Scotland. The earliest ones date

:55:37. > :55:41.from around the 10th or 11th century and the collection

:55:41. > :55:45.consisted mainly of those early coins. They would be instantly

:55:45. > :55:50.recognisable. This is on a par with the theft of a national treasure.

:55:50. > :55:55.Really? Given that it is a national treasure presumably it is very

:55:55. > :55:57.difficult to sell it on? Yes, they are extremely rare and I am

:55:58. > :56:02.appealing to anyone under particular to any deal or collector

:56:02. > :56:06.who may think they have been offered these coins to get in touch

:56:06. > :56:10.tonight. We have conducted its -- extensive inquiries across the

:56:10. > :56:13.country and to date, not a single coin from the collection has

:56:13. > :56:17.surfaced. Someone out there knows where they are. Please get in touch

:56:18. > :56:23.with information that could assist the recovery of the coins. Very

:56:23. > :56:26.important, gentlemen, thank you. There is a substantial reward,

:56:26. > :56:29.50,000 is being offered for information which leads to the full

:56:29. > :56:32.recovery of this magnificent collection. If you know anything

:56:32. > :56:38.about these beautiful Scottish coins, please get in touch with us

:56:38. > :56:43.tonight. Here is the number. Time now for a quick update on what is

:56:43. > :56:46.coming in on the phones. A great response on all of our

:56:46. > :56:52.appeals. Let's start with the Nellie Geraghty -- the Nellie

:56:52. > :56:56.Geraghty murder. Detectives are desperate to find her killer ran

:56:56. > :57:01.find Frank's ashes. Detectives need more information. They have had

:57:01. > :57:05.calls about the bike and the bag. Let's turn to the Nottingham Sharon

:57:05. > :57:09.robbery, incredible violence used against Sarah and David Draisey. We

:57:09. > :57:14.have had a couple of similar robberies calls coming income or

:57:14. > :57:22.more specifically at a post office. More information on any one who has

:57:22. > :57:28.the car swap on the A 57. Wanted face number for, 13 calls on that.

:57:28. > :57:32.We will give you more on the update. OK, that is all for now. You can

:57:32. > :57:37.view all the reconstructions, the wanted faces and the CCTV on line

:57:37. > :57:41.along with special would appeals which this month include the brutal

:57:41. > :57:44.murder of 17-year-old Charlie Wright in south London. It is all
