0:00:02 > 0:00:05This is The Real Hustle - Celebrity Scammers.

0:00:05 > 0:00:12In this series, the hustlers carry out scams that are bigger, tougher and more devious than ever before.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15With the help of their celebrity friends,

0:00:15 > 0:00:19hustlers Alex, Jess and

0:00:19 > 0:00:23Paul pull off the riskiest scams of all.

0:00:23 > 0:00:30Long cons. Intricate webs of lies and deception designed to separate the unwary from their money.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37On tonight's show, TV presenter Zoe Salmon feels the pressure

0:00:37 > 0:00:39as she becomes a guest hustler.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44Alex tries not to blow it.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Right. You sort of jam it in.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49And Jess comes over all mystical.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52I just think maybe she just taps into a part of her mind

0:00:52 > 0:00:53that not everyone else can.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36The hustlers have invited celebrity friends to help them carry out their long cons.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38They'll be thrown in at the deep end.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41No training and no practise.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44Just straight in to the scam.

0:01:44 > 0:01:52This week's celebrity guest hustler is former Blue Peter presenter and star of Dancing On Ice, Zoe Salmon.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57I have no idea what to expect.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00I am 100% clueless. I know that

0:02:00 > 0:02:03I'm here for a hustle. I don't have any details at all.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06I've never done anything like this before and I think I could be

0:02:06 > 0:02:09quite good at it. We'll have to wait and see.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Zoe has been told to wait at this bus stop.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16But she's not using public transport.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Instead, she's getting a lift from Alex...

0:02:20 > 0:02:21- Hello.- How are you?

0:02:21 > 0:02:25..who's going to give her a hustle briefing.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29Right. I'm just going to pull up here.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33You and I are going to go and have a look at a car that's for sale.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35- Right.- OK.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40But we're not actually going to buy it. What we're going to do is we're going to mess with it a little bit.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44- Right.- You know what this is?- No.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47This is a VIN plate. And so is this.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Right.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51A VIN plate is bolted on to the frame of every car

0:02:51 > 0:02:53and carries the official chassis number of the vehicle.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Now, you are going to put this fake VIN plate

0:02:57 > 0:03:02over the real VIN plate of the car, whilst I distract

0:03:02 > 0:03:04- the person who's selling it, OK?- OK.

0:03:04 > 0:03:10So, Zoe and Alex are going to pose as a couple and view the car that's for sale.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Alex will do what he can to distract the owner,

0:03:13 > 0:03:16but Zoe's going to have to cover the car's ID plates with fakes.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18There's your VIN plate there.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Alex points out the ones on his own car.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22There's one here.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25One in the doorframe and one on the dashboard.

0:03:25 > 0:03:26So you can just go over it.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30But if she gets caught, this scam won't be going anywhere.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32If you don't put those VIN plates on,

0:03:32 > 0:03:34we can't proceed.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36- Yeah.- OK?

0:03:36 > 0:03:38I got it. Speed is key as well.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40- I will do it.- OK.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43This is The Double Whammy.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48- All right, you've got your things? - I've got the essentials.

0:03:48 > 0:03:53- So Kate, Ian.- Kate, Ian. OK. Let's do it.

0:03:53 > 0:03:54There's no turning back now.

0:03:54 > 0:03:59- Let's go. Let's go buy a car. - Let's do that. I fancy a car today.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01Alex gives Zoe a camera disguised

0:04:01 > 0:04:04as a phone to capture her handiwork.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Oh, hi there. I'm Ian and this is Kate.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17We've come to have a look at the car.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19I think it was Max, was it?

0:04:21 > 0:04:25Oh, right. Would it be all right to have a quick look at it? Thank you.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28What do you think? Baby seat at the back? Pram?

0:04:28 > 0:04:30- Yeah.- Or are we not thinking that far ahead?

0:04:30 > 0:04:34No, no, I think it's good. I think we should look at the boot for that.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37Oh, thank you. Thanks very much.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40The mark may be keeping warm inside the doorway,

0:04:40 > 0:04:44but she's also keeping a very close eye on these potential buyers.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46Just have a sit in.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48It's going to make it tough for Zoe to carry out her task.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54- Yeah.- How many years old?

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Alex needs to keep the mark busy.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01Oh, actually I'm dying for a... If I can give these to you?

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Do you mind if I use your bathroom? Sorry.

0:05:05 > 0:05:06He now has her attention.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Would you mind showing me? I don't want to get lost.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Can Zoe use this distraction to stick on the fake VIN plates?

0:05:12 > 0:05:14WOMAN: Up the stairs. You can see it as you go to the top.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17ALEX: OK and is it first door, second door?

0:05:17 > 0:05:21- As you go in, you can see it as you go up the stairs.- OK.- Just there. - Sorry.- That's OK.

0:05:21 > 0:05:27The first plate in the doorframe is on. The mark is back at the door, keeping an eye on Zoe.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30The second plate is going to be even trickier.

0:05:30 > 0:05:35Can I ask you, do you know how many years your son has had the car?

0:05:35 > 0:05:40Alex is still keeping the mark busy, but Zoe's going to have to be quick.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44Cos I was just wondering if he's had all the log books from the very beginning or if he's had...?

0:05:44 > 0:05:47I can try and contact him for you.

0:05:47 > 0:05:48You can have a word.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50OK, um... OK.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54It's done. Zoe has successfully completed part one of the scam.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Now, they just have to make their excuses and leave.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59I mean, it looks great inside.

0:05:59 > 0:06:04But, you know, sometimes it's hard to tell, isn't it?

0:06:04 > 0:06:07- We can't buy it today.- Yeah.- But we thought we'd come and have a look.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09I'll give Max a call and I can ask him all the questions.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Cheers. That's all right.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Thanks a lot. Bye. Have a nice day.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20She wouldn't just... She sort of kept looking out.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22You must have been very quick.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26Yeah. I kept looking back. I was pretending I was feeling the dashboard.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28Like, making sure it was nice quality.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32- The one on the door, you did that straight away?- Yeah, I did it instantly.- Well done, you.

0:06:35 > 0:06:40Later that day, some genuine prospective buyers turn up at the house.

0:06:43 > 0:06:48This guy obviously knows his stuff and is giving the vehicle a thorough going-over.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52It's essential to the scam that he doesn't discover Zoe's fake VIN plates.

0:06:55 > 0:07:01After 15 minutes of careful checking, the man seems happy with the car, and they all head inside.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Looks like the owner could have a sale.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10Before long, the deal is done and the new owners drive off in their vehicle.

0:07:12 > 0:07:18- But they don't get very far before running into an unexpected road block.- Stop one second, sir.

0:07:18 > 0:07:19But this is no ordinary checkpoint

0:07:19 > 0:07:23because these bogus Department For Transport officials

0:07:23 > 0:07:25are actually Zoe and Alex.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27- Keep coming.- Yup, you're good.

0:07:27 > 0:07:34They got changed into fluorescent jackets and hats as soon as the buyers went into the house.

0:07:34 > 0:07:39And with their official-looking gear, they're about to ruin this couple's afternoon.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Can you step out of the car?

0:07:41 > 0:07:44There's nothing to worry about.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47We're from the Department For Transport.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50We're the Department For Transport...

0:07:50 > 0:07:51Here comes the bombshell.

0:07:51 > 0:07:56You just purchased this car from a few doors down, didn't you?

0:07:56 > 0:07:58We've been monitoring that place,

0:07:58 > 0:08:02they have been selling cars that have not been quite legit.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05So that's one gob-smacked mark stopped in his tracks.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07That's coming right off.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10But this scam isn't called The Double Whammy for nothing.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12I will have to take your fingerprints.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29When hustlers go out, they don't bring money,

0:08:29 > 0:08:31they go armed with prop bets.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38The customers in this bar are about to be made an offer that's hard to refuse.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42Win or lose a drink over a simple wager.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- But a prop bet only has one rule. - Do you give up?

0:08:48 > 0:08:51And that's that the hustler always wins.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55- To the bar! - Drinks, please! Thank you.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59Alex has made some new friends and fancies a free drink.

0:08:59 > 0:09:05OK, so we're all low on drinks, so what I suggest is if you can't do this next challenge,

0:09:05 > 0:09:08you guys have got to buy a round of drinks. OK?

0:09:08 > 0:09:11So, we're going to use this glass and we're going to use...

0:09:11 > 0:09:15It's not what you think, it's not what you think.

0:09:16 > 0:09:17Hang on.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21Right, here we go. I'm going to tie a knot into this.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24Right, OK. So, here's the challenge -

0:09:24 > 0:09:28you've got to use this balloon to pick up this glass.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31You cannot touch the glass

0:09:31 > 0:09:35and you can only hold the balloon right at the very top

0:09:35 > 0:09:38where the knot is. Also, when I say lift the glass, I mean lift it.

0:09:38 > 0:09:43So the bet is to lift the glass clear off the table using the balloon,

0:09:43 > 0:09:46which can only be held by the very end.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- OK, Helen.- Only the top?

0:09:49 > 0:09:51Only the top. You've got to pick that glass up.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54I assume you do that?

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Yeah, and sort of jam it in.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58I really can't do it.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02- I've got a couple of ideas. - Oh, God. Here we go.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04Right. Can I undo the balloon?

0:10:04 > 0:10:07- No.- Pierce the balloon in...- No.

0:10:07 > 0:10:14You're actually touching the glass now.

0:10:14 > 0:10:19Very good though. I'll give you a packet of crisps or something.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22- You ready for the answer?- Please. - Otherwise, we'll be here all day.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24I'm going to use something.

0:10:27 > 0:10:28- Ready?- Yeah.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33- Sinead's still puzzled. - I'm really puzzled.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44- Oh, my god!- Here we go. Picking up the glass

0:10:44 > 0:10:47by touching the balloon only from the end.

0:10:47 > 0:10:48Oh, my god!

0:10:48 > 0:10:52Now, you got to admit, that's something you don't see every day.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56I'm using that. I am using that!

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Here's how it works.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01The lit match burns up the oxygen in the glass,

0:11:01 > 0:11:04creating low pressure, which sucks in the balloon.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07The two are then wedged together so tightly,

0:11:07 > 0:11:09the glass can be lifted right off the table.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12Drinks, please! Thank you.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27This upmarket street has got a brand new resident -

0:11:27 > 0:11:31a mysterious raven-haired lady who can seemingly contact the spirit world

0:11:31 > 0:11:37and tell her customers intimate details of their lives.

0:11:37 > 0:11:43Her name is Jess, but in spiritual circles she's known only as Madame Suzie.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46This is The Phony Psychic Scam.

0:11:48 > 0:11:54Madame Suzie's shop is decked out in authentic-looking spiritual gear.

0:11:54 > 0:11:59All she needs now are some customers, ready to take a journey into the unknown.

0:11:59 > 0:12:04- Hi, I'm Suzie.- Let's see if Madame Suzie knows her stuff.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08I was watching you when you came in. I'm going to give you a free reading.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10I'm not going to charge you for it,

0:12:10 > 0:12:14but if you think you've learnt something, then you can give me what you think.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18- OK.- But if you've not learnt anything then you don't pay anything.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22No money up front? She must be very confident about her friends in the spirit world.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26Let the psychic predictions begin.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28You Cypriot?

0:12:28 > 0:12:31- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Not a bad start, but that could have been a lucky guess.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Getting an image, it's quite white.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40That's not your favourite colour, then?

0:12:40 > 0:12:43No. It's not a place, but it is a place. It's...

0:12:45 > 0:12:48..like Alaska or something.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Somewhere very cold, but it's not the place.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54It's... For some reason, the word Alaska means a lot.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57- My dog's called Alaska. - And is he white? Is he a white dog?

0:12:57 > 0:13:00- Yeah.- That's it, the white dog Alaska.- Yeah.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03Madame Suzie's predictions seem to be right on the money.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- Got a lot of unconditional love for you.- Really?- Yeah.

0:13:06 > 0:13:11- He's with you now, thinking about you.- Oh, hope so.- Yeah?

0:13:12 > 0:13:16You've got another half. Ever heard of that cartoon, Dennis the Menace?

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Yeah. Oh, my god. His nickname is Menace.

0:13:20 > 0:13:21- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:13:21 > 0:13:26Without any prompting, Jess knows private details of this girl's life.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29And she's not the only one to be amazed.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Can I have your hand, please?

0:13:31 > 0:13:36I noticed... I've got a very good healing sensation from them.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39It may be that you're going to be a doctor or something.

0:13:39 > 0:13:41Are you studying like medicine? Or...

0:13:41 > 0:13:43- Yeah.- Spot on once again.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46I could tell by your hand straight away.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50When I'm looking at you, though, it's almost like I'm on stage.

0:13:50 > 0:13:55It's something that you need to do, it's like your job. You provide some sort of entertainment.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57Does that make sense to you?

0:13:57 > 0:13:59It's downright unnatural.

0:13:59 > 0:14:04Looks like you do something quite dangerous.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09That's funny, I just saw a motorbike go past then and I just... I felt something. Do you ride motorbikes?

0:14:09 > 0:14:12I just got a feeling then. Did you hear that motorbike?

0:14:12 > 0:14:15- She should be burnt as a witch! - Is that accurate?

0:14:15 > 0:14:18You sound very accurate. Quite shocking.

0:14:18 > 0:14:23I can see a J round your neck. I think maybe you have a son or something.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Like, Joe or something?

0:14:26 > 0:14:27Joe? John?

0:14:27 > 0:14:30- My son's name is Joel.- Joel. Joel.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32The marks are so impressed,

0:14:32 > 0:14:34they're happy to pay for their psychic readings.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37- Change that? £40? - Whatever you think.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40- Thank you.- Thank you very much for that.- You take care of yourself.- OK.

0:14:40 > 0:14:45There's no doubt, they've met someone with awesome spiritual powers.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48It was weird, that's all I can say.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51Sometimes you hear people saying it's a load of rubbish,

0:14:51 > 0:14:54but everything I heard was like, "Wow, how did she know that?"

0:14:54 > 0:14:58I just think maybe she just taps into a part of her mind that not everyone else can,

0:14:58 > 0:15:01and it's just something that you're probably born with.

0:15:01 > 0:15:07In fact, Jess's powers have nothing to do with spirits and crystal balls.

0:15:07 > 0:15:13She actually got all her information from her customers old mobile phones. And here's how...

0:15:15 > 0:15:19The hustlers have set up a mobile phone recycling service.

0:15:19 > 0:15:23Donate your old handset and they'll give £50 to charity.

0:15:23 > 0:15:29Though there are many honest recycling schemes, this one definitely isn't.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32What the hustlers are after is data.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36People don't realise quite how much information is left on an old handset.

0:15:36 > 0:15:41Contact names, numbers, photos or personal text messages.

0:15:41 > 0:15:47And unscrupulous hustlers can use this information for all kinds of criminal fraud.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50To demonstrate the inside knowledge this gives them,

0:15:50 > 0:15:55the hustlers invited the owners of some donated phones for the psychic reading.

0:15:55 > 0:16:00And Jess wasn't really communicating with the spirit world.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04She was getting her information from Alex who was sitting in the next room.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07And she didn't have to look into the crystal ball,

0:16:07 > 0:16:13just above the mark's heads, where Alex was feeding her the information on an LED display.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16I think maybe you have a son or something?

0:16:16 > 0:16:20I can see a J round your neck, I think that's a name.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23Like Joe or something? John?

0:16:23 > 0:16:25- My son's name is Joel.- Joel? Joel.

0:16:25 > 0:16:30It's like you do something quite dangerous? That's funny,

0:16:30 > 0:16:34I just saw a motorbike go past and I felt something. Do you ride motorbikes?

0:16:34 > 0:16:37- Yes.- I just got a feeling, did you hear that motorbike?

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Ever heard of that cartoon Dennis the Menace?

0:16:41 > 0:16:46- Yeah. Oh, my god. His nickname is Menace.- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50Turns out this psychic is more PHONY than most.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55So, everything she told me today was from... ?

0:16:57 > 0:17:00Speechless. Don't know what to say. Wow, I'm shocked.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04It's like identity fraud, isn't it?

0:17:04 > 0:17:09Could be messages, contacts, probably my house address if I put it there.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13My PIN for my bank account.

0:17:13 > 0:17:19So, she's a fraud? Actually, that's out of order! You can't put anything on your phone!

0:17:19 > 0:17:24New technology is leaving us increasingly open to crimes like identity theft,

0:17:24 > 0:17:26and Jess' little psychic act has proven

0:17:26 > 0:17:30that something as simple as a SIM card in a mobile phone

0:17:30 > 0:17:34could tell someone much more than you'd like them to know.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38Remember, there's a large amount of information stored on these devices,

0:17:38 > 0:17:43so treat them exactly like you would your passport or your drivers licence.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46If a mobile phone has just been left in a drawer,

0:17:46 > 0:17:49people think that because it's not been turned on for six months,

0:17:49 > 0:17:52all the data will be gone. That's not the case.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Everything that was stored will still be there -

0:17:54 > 0:17:59all the contact details, call records, photographs and other data left on the phone.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01If you do want to get rid of an old mobile phone,

0:18:01 > 0:18:03the way to do it is to A) smash it to pieces,

0:18:03 > 0:18:06which obviously isn't very environmentally friendly,

0:18:06 > 0:18:08or B) factory reset the data on the phone.

0:18:08 > 0:18:12It ensures that nobody will be able to use your data for nefarious means.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Hi, there. We've come to have a look at the car.

0:18:25 > 0:18:29Earlier, Alex and TV presenter Zoe Salmon viewed a car for sale.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33- Do you mind if I use your bathroom? - Whilst Alex distracted the owner,

0:18:33 > 0:18:36Zoe covered the car's ID plates with fakes.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40Later, some real customers came and bought the car.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43But the proud owners didn't get very far

0:18:43 > 0:18:46because they were immediately flagged down

0:18:46 > 0:18:49by two bogus Department For Transport officials

0:18:49 > 0:18:53- and told their car is stolen. - We've been monitoring that place.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56They have been selling cars that have not been quite legit.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00This is The Double Whammy, part two.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03We'd like to have a look at this car, all right?

0:19:04 > 0:19:09The mark's struggling to believe that the friendly lady he bought the car from sold him a dodgy motor.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12If you come with me, I'll show you what I mean.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15- He's going to need some persuading. - They usually...

0:19:15 > 0:19:19Yeah, that looks to me... You haven't touched this, have you?

0:19:19 > 0:19:21That's where Zoe's VIN plates come in.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25- Can you just check that one for me? - It's coming right off. - That's coming right off?

0:19:25 > 0:19:28- Yeah, mm-hmm.- You see, that's what happens...

0:19:28 > 0:19:32Alex and Zoe peel off the fake plates in full view of the mark

0:19:32 > 0:19:34who now has no doubt that the car is stolen.

0:19:36 > 0:19:41And his woes are about to double because here's the rest of the Hustle team.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43OK, we're good. Can you just pull in...

0:19:43 > 0:19:44- I've got the footage.- OK.

0:19:44 > 0:19:49- Just pull in.- Paul and Jess have gathered some very incriminating evidence of their own.

0:19:51 > 0:19:52Excuse me, sir.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55Can I have you confirm that this is you on the video?

0:19:57 > 0:20:02Sure enough, that's a video of the marks viewing the vehicle.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04So, that's you there?

0:20:04 > 0:20:08They've obviously been caught up in a major surveillance operation.

0:20:08 > 0:20:14Actually, it's just something filmed by Jess and Paul who staked out the car all day,

0:20:14 > 0:20:16hoping that someone would buy it.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22She won't, no.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24We've got someone, don't worry.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28With the marks now convinced, it's time to separate them from their purchase.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30Who's got the keys, the gentleman?

0:20:30 > 0:20:35Zoe needs to take physical possession of the keys and the car.

0:20:35 > 0:20:37If you want to get in there, we'll turn that round.

0:20:39 > 0:20:40Yes, yes.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44Sir, what we want to do now...

0:20:44 > 0:20:48Zoe's got the car, but this scam isn't over yet.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51You come with us, my colleague there has got the car.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53Can you give me a moment to approach her?

0:20:53 > 0:20:57I'm going to go and get the money, check it and give the money directly to you.

0:20:57 > 0:21:02These marks still don't seem too convinced, so the hustlers are going to have to move fast.

0:21:02 > 0:21:06Sorry about the inconvenience, but it's better than losing your money.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10Paul and Jess head off to have a word with the seller.

0:21:14 > 0:21:19They're going to tell the whole surveillance story all over again, but with a major twist.

0:21:19 > 0:21:23Here comes The Double Whammy.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27Hi, there. How are you? My name's Robert Marks.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29I'm an officer from the Department For Transport.

0:21:29 > 0:21:33We've been watching somebody that bought a car from you in the last 20 minutes.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37We've stopped them, we believe they've passed counterfeit money.

0:21:37 > 0:21:42This time round, the hustlers are saying that the buyers are the criminals.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44My colleagues are bringing them in,

0:21:44 > 0:21:49but I'd like to make sure that it is counterfeited, if that's OK? Just come out and check the monitor.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52I want you to confirm the person that bought the vehicle.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59You've just got to agree that these are the same people.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03I know. They're bringing your car back right now, so don't worry.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Your car's safe, don't worry.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08These are the people that came to the door,

0:22:08 > 0:22:09you can confirm that?

0:22:09 > 0:22:13Jess and Paul show the same footage recorded earlier.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16Don't worry. You're not the first person to fall for this.

0:22:16 > 0:22:17That's why we're here, so...

0:22:17 > 0:22:20And once again, the black van and hi-tech equipment

0:22:20 > 0:22:22make the story completely believable.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25My colleague has your car there.

0:22:25 > 0:22:30Across the road, Alex has pulled up with the couple sitting in his car,

0:22:30 > 0:22:36and guest-hustler Zoe is sitting right behind in the confiscated vehicle. Her role isn't over yet.

0:22:38 > 0:22:43At this close range, the buyers can see the seller and vice versa,

0:22:43 > 0:22:45each thinking that the other is the crook.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47What I'd like to do is check the cash.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50I'm also going to take your fingerprints, only just to...

0:22:50 > 0:22:53- Get them mixed up. - Now for the money.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57Paul needs to convince the mark that these notes are counterfeit.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00Now, these ones will be real,

0:23:00 > 0:23:02these ones will all be fake.

0:23:05 > 0:23:07Real ones turn black, fake ones turn green. See?

0:23:09 > 0:23:14Sure enough, a green line means these notes in the middle must be fakes.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16Fake money.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19Yeah, that's a real one.

0:23:19 > 0:23:20You can always tell.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24The ones on top turn black, so they are genuine notes.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27Paul's going to have to take them all in as evidence.

0:23:27 > 0:23:32This is their money, which is probably going to cost them a lot more than they think.

0:23:32 > 0:23:37But how did Paul manage to make this real money look like it was mostly fake?

0:23:37 > 0:23:44Easy. That wasn't a counterfeit testing pen he was using, it was just a felt tip,

0:23:44 > 0:23:48and he switched the green one for a black one halfway through.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51You know what? Just cos I want to be absolutely sure.

0:23:51 > 0:23:57So, Zoe's in the confiscated car and Paul has the money.

0:23:57 > 0:24:02The hustlers are almost done, but first, Paul wants to take the mark's fingerprints.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06OK, just roll it on there once. Not too hard, just softly.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08And then just here, please.

0:24:08 > 0:24:12To the buyers, this looks like she's finally getting her comeuppance from the law.

0:24:12 > 0:24:17But it's really to make sure she has to go inside the house.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20- Do we have those wipes, to take the ink off?- You know what, I don't.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24What will she do with all that ink on her hands?

0:24:24 > 0:24:27Do you want to go in and just give your hands a quick wash?

0:24:27 > 0:24:30Give your hands a little wash.

0:24:30 > 0:24:36With the seller out of the way, it's time for Zoe's big moment.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39She has to drive off in the confiscated car.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46Now for the hustlers to make their own getaways.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49My colleague will take you from here, if you'd go and join him?

0:24:49 > 0:24:52Alex tells the buyers that they're going to get the cash back,

0:24:52 > 0:24:55they just need to walk across the road to Paul to collect it.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58So one mark is inside the house,

0:24:58 > 0:25:00the others are crossing the road.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02Time for a quick exit.

0:25:17 > 0:25:21The car, the money and the hustlers are all gone.

0:25:21 > 0:25:26Leaving some very confused marks to come face to face and wonder what on earth just happened.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43It quickly becomes clear their two stories don't add up.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46They said the car was stolen. They pulled stickers off the car

0:25:46 > 0:25:50and said this lady was part of the gang they'd been watching.

0:25:50 > 0:25:55This man and woman came out and said, "There's a couple just bought a car."

0:25:55 > 0:25:59- I said, "Yes, fine." And they said, "They've handed you counterfeit money."- What?!

0:25:59 > 0:26:03They're rip-off merchants, they stole the car and the bloody money!

0:26:03 > 0:26:07I did look at his badge and it didn't say VOSA or anything like that written on it.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10So, I must admit, I was a little bit suspicious,

0:26:10 > 0:26:13but when they had all the video camera stuff in the back of the car,

0:26:13 > 0:26:18- you think, "Well, that's obviously genuine stuff."- Yeah, yeah.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20So, how was it for Zoe?

0:26:20 > 0:26:25Do you know what? I was actually quite impressed with how it went. We totally, totally hustled them.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28I actually began to feel a bit sorry for them

0:26:28 > 0:26:30because I just thought "Aw," you know,

0:26:30 > 0:26:34"Just say that was my parents," and he said, "We were trying to save some money,

0:26:34 > 0:26:37"if you go into a car dealership it's more expensive."

0:26:37 > 0:26:39I was like, "There, there," I started to feel a bit...

0:26:41 > 0:26:45This is a classic example of social compliance -

0:26:45 > 0:26:50seeing a fluorescent jacket and assuming that the person wearing it is in a position of authority.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53When given the opportunity to get their money back,

0:26:53 > 0:26:58or their car back, they're very happy to go along with all the instructions that we give them.

0:26:58 > 0:27:04The final convincer is pointing the marks out to each other, each thinking the other is the scammer.

0:27:04 > 0:27:10That keeps them focused on something else, whilst the real scammers get away with the car and the cash.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13Whenever you're confronted by a figure of authority,

0:27:13 > 0:27:17if you think there's any doubt whatsoever, ask for their ID.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20Don't be afraid to say you want to ring their office and check.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23If they're genuine people, they won't mind you checking up on them.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26If not, they'll back off very quickly.

0:27:26 > 0:27:30Showing somebody some marks on video footage means absolutely nothing.

0:27:30 > 0:27:34We've all got video cameras, we've all got phones with cameras in these days.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37It's very easy to produce concocted evidence

0:27:37 > 0:27:39that really needs to be challenged properly.
