0:00:02 > 0:00:05This programme contains strong language.

0:00:05 > 0:00:0813 million motoring offences every year. It's gone through a wall,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10it's taken out a power cable and somersaulted onto its roof.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13More than 200,000 crashes and accidents.

0:00:15 > 0:00:20The nation's traffic police patrol across 250,000 miles of road.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25Tonight:

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Go, go, go.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32Yorkshire's traffic police - chasing fugitives and runaways.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Dead end, isn't it? Tight, tight, tight.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40Romeo, Charlie, four-one, we've got a runner.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46Detecting. Massive big spanners and some like bolt croppers and gloves.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49And putting the brake on some of Britain's prolific criminals.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53Stand still, cos you won't get away and you're on camera!

0:00:53 > 0:00:57And a new way the police are collecting official evidence,

0:00:57 > 0:00:58on head-cams.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Get that camera off my face!

0:01:00 > 0:01:03Recording the action as the traffic cops see it happen.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06From a police officer's point of view, really, what you

0:01:06 > 0:01:09see on the head-cam is exactly what we're seeing in real life.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Chases caught on camera.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15And arrests.

0:01:15 > 0:01:16Someone's always watching.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20It is a game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34Bradford, one of Britain's fastest growing cities,

0:01:34 > 0:01:35and home to half a million people.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40SIREN WAILS

0:01:40 > 0:01:42It's 9.30pm.

0:01:42 > 0:01:47Traffic cops Mark Claxton and Andy Cox are on night patrol.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Pinch some baddies tonight, eh?

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Rather than just goodies who are being a bit naughty.

0:01:51 > 0:01:57We'd not long set out on patrol and, on doing so,

0:01:57 > 0:02:00we'd seen a vehicle that had come across the front of us.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06He almost braked to a stop when he saw us. Where's he going? Don't know.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11And, literally, as we set off,

0:02:11 > 0:02:15he's decided to do an immediate u-turn, which was quite weird.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Maybe he missed his turning.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21'It appeared that he didn't want us behind him.'

0:02:21 > 0:02:23So we decided to stop him.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Hiya. What were that about, then?

0:02:31 > 0:02:34When I've got to the vehicle and spoken to him,

0:02:34 > 0:02:38he's sat in the driver's seat with a female passenger.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42And he's appeared nervous.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46And what about the light, what about the traffic lights, then? What does red mean?

0:02:49 > 0:02:51Didn't you?

0:02:51 > 0:02:54So, when ours were on green, then, and you came through looking

0:02:54 > 0:02:58at us and then did a u-turn, yours were on green as well as ours, then?

0:03:00 > 0:03:03At that point, he's put his hand on the keys as

0:03:03 > 0:03:05if he was going to turn the engine off.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08But I've then in fact seen him select first gear.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Shall we have a look on the video?

0:03:11 > 0:03:13All right, then, we'll have a look on video and see,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15because ours were on green.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Do I actually try and grab the keys?

0:03:17 > 0:03:18Turn your engine off.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23You're a bit helpless as to what to do

0:03:23 > 0:03:26because nobody wants to be an injured or dead hero.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36Stand by, I think we've got a vehicle making off from us. Go, go, go.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40What's he doing? Shitting it, I think.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45He has now decided that he is going to make off from us

0:03:45 > 0:03:47and he doesn't want to speak to us any more.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50'Doesn't seem to want to join our party.'

0:03:54 > 0:04:01Did you get reg at all. T4... Romeo Tango... 65.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07'He's continued through some little back streets down to the main road again.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09'And he's gone straight across it,'

0:04:09 > 0:04:11regardless of anything that

0:04:11 > 0:04:13could have been coming from either direction.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17And they will take risks like that. They're running on adrenaline. They don't want to get caught.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Tango four X-ray alpha Mike.

0:04:20 > 0:04:25Failing to stop. Now onto an unnamed back road. It's a dead end.

0:04:30 > 0:04:31Tight, tight, tight.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44'The weather at the time was really cold,'

0:04:44 > 0:04:47I remember it being very slippy underfoot.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49And wondering who was going to be the first to fall,

0:04:49 > 0:04:51whether it would be me or him.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53'And hoping it would be him.'

0:04:56 > 0:05:02Tango 65, chasing on foot, Oak Lane. Asian male from a decamp.

0:05:02 > 0:05:09Woolly jumper, blue jeans, about 5'7", 5'8".

0:05:09 > 0:05:11I'm on the local radio, now,

0:05:11 > 0:05:16and telling the communications room that I'm chasing someone on foot.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20Stand still, because you won't get away, and you're on camera!

0:05:20 > 0:05:22You've always got going through you mind,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25why is this man running in the first place? What has he done?

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Has he got a gun down his waistband, has he got a knife?

0:05:28 > 0:05:31You never know when you're chasing anybody what it is that

0:05:31 > 0:05:32they're doing.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41As you can see, the neighbouring policing unit was at the junction.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43I think he's then seen their blue lights and decided that

0:05:43 > 0:05:46he's going to take a chance,

0:05:46 > 0:05:49to some extent film-style, through the front of the restaurant,

0:05:49 > 0:05:52and hopefully through the back, past the chefs,

0:05:52 > 0:05:54and out of the back door to the bins.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56But it didn't quite work like that.

0:05:58 > 0:05:59Turn round now!

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Hello. Turn around.

0:06:13 > 0:06:19You are under arrest for dangerous driving, failing to stop for police.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23And going through a red traffic light. Do you understand?

0:06:23 > 0:06:27Do you understand? I'm cautioning you. You don't have to say anything.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30It may harm your defence if you don't mention

0:06:30 > 0:06:33when questioned something which you later rely on in court.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Anything that you do say may be given in evidence.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44And after the nice little run in the cold weather we're both

0:06:44 > 0:06:46a little tired.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49Yes, yes, one detained, 112.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Where's my girlfriend? What? Where's my girlfriend? I don't know.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Been chasing you, haven't I, how am I going to know that?

0:06:55 > 0:06:59Got anything on you that you shouldn't have? No. Anything at all.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Anything sharp, any weapons? I'm not dangerous.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03I'm just a bit fucked in my head right now.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05It tends to be the case that,

0:07:05 > 0:07:09a lot of the time, the people that you're dealing with have

0:07:09 > 0:07:11always got dramatic life issues

0:07:11 > 0:07:14and it's always somebody else's fault but theirs for their actions.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17I shouldn't have done that, I'm a dickhead.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23He's now extremely remorseful and sorry for what he's done.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26Thank you very much for you help. Cheers, love, thank you.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38Ah, I need a wee! That's not like you, is it all the excitement?

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Cold weather.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44With the runner caught, the cops now turn to why.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48If he'd made off straightaway, I could have understood that.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52But to stop and then make off, what's all that about? I know.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57It were as soon as I said, "Turn your engine off, then, and we'll

0:07:57 > 0:08:00"go and have a look at our video, because our light was on green,"

0:08:00 > 0:08:03that he went first gear, and I knew it were coming.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06But his window wasn't all the way down. I was about to grab the keys.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09But he'd already lifted his clutch up and I thought, "If I do,

0:08:09 > 0:08:13I'm going to go with car." Did you not think,

0:08:13 > 0:08:16"I'm prepared to sacrifice myself, for the sake of justice"?

0:08:16 > 0:08:19No, cos I'd look an arse being dragged up Oak Lane

0:08:19 > 0:08:21with my arm the window.

0:08:21 > 0:08:22It's all about priorities, this job.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26The cops still need a motive for the runner.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29A trip to custody may give them the answer.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38Whilst tackling dangerous drivers is a priority for the traffic cops,

0:08:38 > 0:08:42West Yorkshire's Road Crime Team is a specialist unit working to

0:08:42 > 0:08:44reduce overnight burglaries.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47We're not interested in people that might be speeding.

0:08:47 > 0:08:48That's not our core role.

0:08:48 > 0:08:53Our core role is to get into the criminals and deal with them.

0:08:53 > 0:08:57West Yorkshire has the highest burglary rate in the UK.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59I've been a victim of crime a few times.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03That's my property, I've worked for it, you keep our hands off it.

0:09:03 > 0:09:08It's not just a police problem, it's everybody's problem.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12It's the early hours of the morning.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15West Yorkshire Road Crime Team officers Paul Feather

0:09:15 > 0:09:18and Lee Welborne are responding to reports of a robbery.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23Probably about five mile away from the actual incident itself.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26We've got one of the fastest cars in the whole

0:09:26 > 0:09:31of West Yorkshire Police to get there, so we're going to go.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35Got the address, got a description of the male.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37Looks like he's got the house keys and the car keys

0:09:37 > 0:09:41but he's been disturbed. He's got the car at the moment.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44The incident could be a two-in-one burglary,

0:09:44 > 0:09:46robbing a house to get the car keys.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51A lot of the new vehicles nowadays are more sophisticated

0:09:51 > 0:09:53regarding security.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56So the only way they can get your car is to break into your house

0:09:56 > 0:09:58and take your keys.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Car key burglaries are on the rise

0:10:00 > 0:10:02and now account for a third of Britain's car theft.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09RADIO: 'We're looking for a white male, tall, wearing jeans

0:10:09 > 0:10:11'and a light-coloured jacket.'

0:10:13 > 0:10:17As we get nearby, we kill the blue lights for a bit of

0:10:17 > 0:10:21a silent approach, and see if we can catch the offender.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23They spot someone in the lane.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29See? Want to have a look?

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Criminals can hear your car coming from miles away,

0:10:35 > 0:10:39so, if they duck down in a garden, you might not see them.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44The person in the lane is the homeowner,

0:10:44 > 0:10:46trying to find his stolen keys.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51Just laid in bed, just heard the back door go,

0:10:51 > 0:10:52and the chain stopped the back door.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56At which point, my wife had looked down, she actually saw

0:10:56 > 0:11:00the gentleman concerned heading back up the snicket.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03Came down and just found the door ajar.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07Fortunately, the chain had stopped him actually gaining access.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15You know you're looking for someone so you're trying to be on your guard.

0:11:15 > 0:11:20But it's happened several times with myself now where people don't

0:11:20 > 0:11:22keep running, they lay low, they try and keep out of sight

0:11:22 > 0:11:26and can hide for quite a long period of time. So you've got to be aware.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Lee spots something in the grass.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38It's the stolen keys.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46Can't believe we actually found them, because they were chucked to one side in the grass.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49I think me torchlight's just caught the silver bit of them.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55I would imagine he's long gone now.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57Reason he's discarded keys, obviously,

0:11:57 > 0:11:59if he gets stopped anywhere and he's got them keys on him,

0:11:59 > 0:12:03ties him straight to the job, doesn't it?

0:12:03 > 0:12:06The keys may be recovered but the thief is still at large.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Can you just do us a favour and ring caller back and let him

0:12:09 > 0:12:13know we've got his keys? Lee and Paul call in the police dogs.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16I don't know if you've got a chance, really.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Basically, I found the keys just in the grass at side of path,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22just the other side of that snicket. So, he's obviously come out here.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24'The dogs are just really useful.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27'I've even seen it before where they've tracked to'

0:12:27 > 0:12:29somebody's home address, they can be that good.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32So, in the night, particularly, they're a really useful asset.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Definitely come down here, well, somebody's come down here.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48The problems you've got are the weather and the time.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52Time lapse sometimes, but I can see here that the dog's taken us

0:12:52 > 0:12:54a fair way down a few number of streets.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01If I'd shouted you in first place there might have been a chance.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04With no trace on the burglar, the search is called off.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10I take it they're your keys. They are, yes. So, what's happened?

0:13:10 > 0:13:15He's obviously run off, he's gone round the bend there.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17He's just thrown them in the hedge.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20Well, not the hedge, just the rough grass at the side.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23He's done that because if he gets stopped with keys on him

0:13:23 > 0:13:27he's straight up suspect, whereas he's got a bit of a chance.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30This was perhaps not what you might class as a professional burglary,

0:13:30 > 0:13:34it were more opportunistic, just because of the whole circumstances.

0:13:34 > 0:13:38The burglar must have been walking past the house when the keys have

0:13:38 > 0:13:43been left in the door accidentally by the lady that lives in the house.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45And he's grabbed the keys.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47I was really impressed by the service.

0:13:47 > 0:13:52It's good to know that, for a change! We do appreciate it.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Really nice, because they were a lovely family, but it's

0:13:55 > 0:13:57nice that they were so grateful, so pleased with what we'd done.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00OK, well, listen, thank you. No worries.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02No worries, nice to be able to help.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05I mean, it's not the result we wanted, we'd like to catch him,

0:14:05 > 0:14:08but it's a bit of a result, save you some expense.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10All right, thank you.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12That's what it's all about.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16Had they not retrieved the keys, he'd probably have had a sleepless

0:14:16 > 0:14:20night, he probably wouldn't have gone to bed. He's got two young children.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22I don't know how old the children were

0:14:22 > 0:14:25but it can have a bit of a psychological effect on them,

0:14:25 > 0:14:29as well. It's one of probably the most devastating things you can

0:14:29 > 0:14:31have happen to you.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46After a foot chase through the back streets of Bradford,

0:14:46 > 0:14:49Mark and Andy catch up with their runaway driver down at the station.

0:14:49 > 0:14:55It's blowing clear air through it to get out all of your breath.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57And then it will test itself again...

0:14:58 > 0:15:01A breath test might explain why he ran.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05BEEPING There you go.

0:15:05 > 0:15:10The legal limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100...

0:15:10 > 0:15:15Listen to me. When my lips are moving it means I'm talking.

0:15:15 > 0:15:21When I finish what I'm saying, then you can query something. All right?

0:15:21 > 0:15:25The legal limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml

0:15:25 > 0:15:26of breath.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28You have provided two samples.

0:15:28 > 0:15:33The lowest is 48 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml

0:15:33 > 0:15:36of breath. It means you're over the drink drive limit.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38He's 13 points over the limit.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41He needs to sober up, which could take all night.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01Right.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12So, tomorrow morning... So, we've got a slight problem there.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14It was the "poor me" circumstances of,

0:16:14 > 0:16:17"my life's a bit of a mess at the moment,

0:16:17 > 0:16:20"and unfortunately I've just made it worse, haven't I?"

0:16:20 > 0:16:22I can't make any promises that you're going to be there.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25I would suggest at this time the possibility is that probably not.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28May I speak to my solicitor before I go in the cell?

0:16:28 > 0:16:30We'll try and arrange that, yeah.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32We can't make that decision, but we'll ask.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46We've basically looked this male up, who we've arrested,

0:16:46 > 0:16:52and he's very well known, he's got a big record for a lot of offending.

0:16:52 > 0:16:59He has about five, six, seven incidents involving him this year.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03You can find quite often that the serial person is

0:17:03 > 0:17:05the one that is always remorseful,

0:17:05 > 0:17:08and he's never going to do it again and can you give him a chance?

0:17:08 > 0:17:12And then you do check him out and they have a list as long as your arm.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18It's 7am. Start of the morning rush hour.

0:17:20 > 0:17:24West Yorkshire Roads Policing Unit PCs Lee Moody

0:17:24 > 0:17:26and Craig Warner are called to attend a crash at

0:17:26 > 0:17:31Dawsons Corner, a traffic blackspot midway between Bradford and Leeds.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36All we've got at the moment is a report of a two-vehicle collision.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39Saying that there's one person possibly trapped in a vehicle.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43He's not sure if they're trapped or if it's just concern for them.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46Outside London, West Yorkshire has the highest number of traffic

0:17:46 > 0:17:47collisions in the UK.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50En route, we got an update saying a person was trapped.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52It can be quite a horrific sight,

0:17:52 > 0:17:54especially depending how much damage is caused.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56So that's all going through your head.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00Road conditions this morning are bad.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03It's minus three and foggy. Really foggy.

0:18:04 > 0:18:08We've got to be careful what we do, and then you've got people that...

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Stop in the middle lane of a roundabout, rather than moving over.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13HORN BLARES

0:18:14 > 0:18:17And rush hour traffic is proving a challenge.

0:18:18 > 0:18:23Use your mirrors! Do you want me to hang out of the window and shout?!

0:18:25 > 0:18:26There's noise, there's lights,

0:18:26 > 0:18:29there's everything telling people that we want to go by.

0:18:29 > 0:18:30HORN BLARES

0:18:34 > 0:18:36Move!

0:18:37 > 0:18:40People just aren't paying attention!

0:18:44 > 0:18:47It could be one of their family members, it could be their house,

0:18:47 > 0:18:50it could be something of theirs that we're going to.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52They'd want everybody out of the way then.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56Fire service are already there, ambulance are already there.

0:18:56 > 0:19:02So I would imagine that total chaos is ensuing at the moment.

0:19:04 > 0:19:08Until we actually get there, or get further updates regarding any

0:19:08 > 0:19:11injuries, we're still not 100% what we're actually going to.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16How do.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22Is he all right? Yeah, yeah. Only just arrived.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24This fellow's still trapped in the vehicle.

0:19:24 > 0:19:25We don't have any real concerns.

0:19:25 > 0:19:30He's complaining of a bit of head pain but the paramedic says it's unusual.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33But he's all right. He's about 50 years old.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35The, er, lady over there, she's been the driver of this vehicle.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38I haven't asked what's happened yet. I haven't spoken to...

0:19:38 > 0:19:41No problem, so she's this one, he's that one? Yep, yep.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45It appears that the driver of the car, er, the male party,

0:19:45 > 0:19:50is trapped, basically, because of his door more than anything, because

0:19:50 > 0:19:54he doesn't want to risk getting out of his car for fear of injury.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56Nobody else involved, I don't believe.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58There's been quite a few people, other witnesses.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01They've not been able to get anything out of him.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04That lady would be able to tell you exactly what's happened.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06'The main thing is the safety of everybody that's there.'

0:20:06 > 0:20:10Once you've got that in place, then you start speaking to people,

0:20:10 > 0:20:13start building a picture of what's actually gone on.

0:20:14 > 0:20:19I think I tried to move in the other lane to avoid him,

0:20:19 > 0:20:23because I thought that he might stop.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25Yeah? Erm...

0:20:26 > 0:20:28..but he didn't, he carried on.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33It's a big deal when you're involved in any collision for most people.

0:20:33 > 0:20:35There's a lot of mess, there's a lot of blue lights around you,

0:20:35 > 0:20:39there's people milling around. It is a shock.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43The thing is, accidents happen. The main thing is that you're OK.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47Erm, everything else is kind of secondary, innit?

0:20:51 > 0:20:53It's nice when you help people, to be honest.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56Whether it's just somebody who's had a collision

0:20:56 > 0:20:59and it's one of the biggest deals that they've had,

0:20:59 > 0:21:03and just helping them to get their head around what's gone on.

0:21:03 > 0:21:04Crucially for the cops,

0:21:04 > 0:21:08the crash was witnessed by a driver following behind.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12She were coming up and he did a U-turn out, so she tried to...

0:21:12 > 0:21:16Swerve. ..get out of the way. And he just went like that.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19The lady in this black Seat's been coming up the road,

0:21:19 > 0:21:23and the taxi's done a U-turn in the road.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26She's tried avoiding it but hasn't been able to, and she's

0:21:26 > 0:21:30impacted the rear of the car, causing extensive damage to hers.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36The taxi driver is complaining of neck pain.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38He's taken to the ambulance.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43The priority now for the traffic cops

0:21:43 > 0:21:46is to get all of the lanes open and moving again.

0:21:46 > 0:21:491-4, thank you. Can we get recovery for both of these vehicles please?

0:21:49 > 0:21:51The IP's been taken out of the car

0:21:51 > 0:21:53and he's now on the back of the ambulance.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55The other vehicle has extensive front-end damage.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58We are blocking two lanes of the ring road,

0:21:58 > 0:22:00so if we could jack up our recovery please.

0:22:00 > 0:22:01It's going to be at our request.

0:22:01 > 0:22:05What we've also got to be mindful of is there are potentially thousands

0:22:05 > 0:22:08of motorists needing to use that road within the next couple of hours.

0:22:08 > 0:22:12They've got places they need to be, meetings they need to be at,

0:22:12 > 0:22:13stores they need to open.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16We need to get that road open and flowing as quickly as we can.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20While Lee gets things moving again...

0:22:22 > 0:22:25..Craig continues to interview the female driver.

0:22:26 > 0:22:27Did you phone the police?

0:22:47 > 0:22:50As soon as it's come to rest he's been on his phone,

0:22:50 > 0:22:51and I think that's...

0:22:51 > 0:22:54It's angered one or two of the witnesses that's been at the scene.

0:22:59 > 0:23:00Hello. Y'all right?

0:23:01 > 0:23:05Extent of injuries? Nothing life-threatening? Nothing worrying.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08Right, we're just going to try and get the car shifted

0:23:08 > 0:23:09so we can reopen the road.

0:23:09 > 0:23:10All right, cheers.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14The taxi driver's injuries aren't serious,

0:23:14 > 0:23:18but he will need to be taken to hospital for further assessment.

0:23:18 > 0:23:19Have you seen the fella?

0:23:19 > 0:23:22No, I've spoken to the paramedics, they've got no grave concerns.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24I think he's just trying it on.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27Apparently, when they've stopped, first thing he's done,

0:23:27 > 0:23:28straight on t'phone. Right.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34For now, getting the taxi driver's account has to wait.

0:23:35 > 0:23:36Here we go.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38Something else has happened.

0:23:38 > 0:23:39Are you two all right?

0:23:42 > 0:23:45We tend to find, when we're at the scene of an accident,

0:23:45 > 0:23:48people pay more attention to us than they do to everybody else.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Too busy looking at that?

0:23:50 > 0:23:53The other car behind has been looking at us, not looking at what's

0:23:53 > 0:23:56happening in front, and has gone straight into the back of him.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07After the unexpected interruption,

0:24:07 > 0:24:09Lee and Craig press on with the clear-up.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16They're just bits of metal. Skin and bones, that's what matters.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19As long as there's nobody seriously injured or owt like that.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22Cars can be fixed or written off, replaced or whatever,

0:24:22 > 0:24:25but, er, people are more important than vehicles.

0:24:29 > 0:24:31With the roads moving again,

0:24:31 > 0:24:35the cops finally manage to interview the taxi driver in hospital.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38He's basically confirmed that he's done a U-turn, he's had a look,

0:24:38 > 0:24:41he couldn't see anything coming, he's done the U-turn

0:24:41 > 0:24:42and then the collision happened.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45It's clearly, he just hasn't seen it coming up.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47He hasn't looked properly and he's pulled out

0:24:47 > 0:24:49and that's what's resulted in the collision.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55At the end of the day, I've got a lot of sympathy for the other lady,

0:24:55 > 0:24:58who was being confronted with a vehicle turning across her path,

0:24:58 > 0:25:01and she couldn't do anything about it.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07The start of a new day for the cops on Britain's roads.

0:25:11 > 0:25:15Officers from Yorkshire's Regional Roads Crime Team are wearing

0:25:15 > 0:25:18specially fitted head-cams that will film their every move.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23Exactly what you see on the head-cam

0:25:23 > 0:25:25is exactly what we're seeing in real life.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28It gives you the point of view of the cops.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33Forces across the country could soon be filming

0:25:33 > 0:25:35every incident they encounter.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45Regional Roads Crime Team Officers Jim Duffy

0:25:45 > 0:25:48and Tim Wilson are working the afternoon shift.

0:25:49 > 0:25:53A blue Golf turning into the road ahead catches their attention.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56'This car came off Barnsley Road quite quickly, really.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59'And that just sort of gains your interest in it.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01'Who owns it? Has it been stopped before?'

0:26:01 > 0:26:03Who's in it? Who's using it?

0:26:03 > 0:26:07And obviously the next step is to start running that vehicle through

0:26:07 > 0:26:09and see what we know about it.

0:26:09 > 0:26:14Yankee Romeo 5-6, Lima Romeo Juliet, it's a blue Golf.

0:26:15 > 0:26:16It has got connections to drugs.

0:26:16 > 0:26:21However, it's back in July 2012, so it's a bit old now.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23There's nothing really very current on it.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28Jim attaches the head-cam before approaching the driver.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30'It's unusual to start with, wearing a head-cam.'

0:26:30 > 0:26:33However, there's a lot of bonuses to it.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36'A lot of evidence can be gathered that way.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42'First thing we notice is that the brake lights are held on.'

0:26:42 > 0:26:44If you're stopped by the police, most people stop the car,

0:26:44 > 0:26:46put their handbrake on,

0:26:46 > 0:26:48because they know they're going to be speaking to someone.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51They're not going anywhere any time soon.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53He's bending down, mate.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55'So when he's holding it on the lights,

0:26:55 > 0:26:57'you're starting to think, "Is he going to go?"'

0:27:00 > 0:27:02The screech of tyres set off.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04We've got a fail-to-stop, fail-to-stop,

0:27:04 > 0:27:06going Sugar Lane at Wakefield.

0:27:09 > 0:27:11Your adrenaline starts rushing.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13In those sort of, those first 30 seconds,

0:27:13 > 0:27:15there's a lot rushing through your mind.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17SIREN

0:27:17 > 0:27:19X-ray tango 1-7, urgent.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22X-ray tango 1-7, we have got a vehicle failing to stop.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25'There's quite a long list of things we have to do.'

0:27:25 > 0:27:28We have to identify who we are, what level of training we've got,

0:27:28 > 0:27:30what vehicle are we in? Where are we?

0:27:30 > 0:27:33The driver might have something on him that he

0:27:33 > 0:27:35doesn't want the police to find.

0:27:35 > 0:27:36He's flung summat out there.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39He's thrown something out on Belisle Avenue.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41Vehicle is failing to stop at Wakefield.

0:27:41 > 0:27:46We're in an advanced car, it is fitted with lights and sirens.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49Driver is initial phase pursuit trained.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52'You can see he's got a complete disregard as he goes up here.

0:27:52 > 0:27:56'It's a busy time of the day, you've got pedestrians on the footpaths,

0:27:56 > 0:28:00'parked vehicles, and he's overtaking two cars there on a bend.'

0:28:00 > 0:28:03If you've got a child that runs out into the road there or anybody,

0:28:03 > 0:28:05you're looking at a fatality.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08Speed at this time is 50, stand by,

0:28:08 > 0:28:11and it's a left-left into Welbeck Street.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14Could we have authority for initial phase pursuit please?

0:28:20 > 0:28:22Got a runner, we've got a runner.

0:28:22 > 0:28:25He's running onto Woodcock Street, Woodcock Street.

0:28:25 > 0:28:28'They always run. Quite often they've got the edge on us.'

0:28:28 > 0:28:30They're wearing trainers, t-shirts.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33We're wearing a lot of gear, we've got multiple radios,

0:28:33 > 0:28:36we've got stab vests, so it's difficult to keep up with them,

0:28:36 > 0:28:38'no matter how fast you are.'

0:28:38 > 0:28:41He's gone Woodcock Street, back towards the main road.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44He could have weapons, he could have anything.

0:28:44 > 0:28:47I don't have a full understanding of his need to get away.

0:28:48 > 0:28:53He crosses over and almost gets hit by a vehicle.

0:28:57 > 0:28:59Get on the floor! Hands behind your back!

0:28:59 > 0:29:01Other arm behind your back.

0:29:02 > 0:29:07You are under arrest, mate, at this time. Suspicion of dangerous driving.

0:29:07 > 0:29:09When they are in front of you,

0:29:09 > 0:29:11there is pride in getting hold of them.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14Have you got anything on you at all? No, I haven't, mate.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17You could have killed someone.

0:29:17 > 0:29:19Why did you stop me in the first place?

0:29:19 > 0:29:21I'm not sure that's the issue, is it? Pardon?

0:29:21 > 0:29:24I'm not sure that's the issue, is it? But why, though?

0:29:24 > 0:29:26There is a bit of mind games with him,

0:29:26 > 0:29:28he's testing what we know about him,

0:29:28 > 0:29:31why have we stopped? You do not know what these people are thinking.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34They don't have much trust in anybody,

0:29:34 > 0:29:36it's a very risky game they're in.

0:29:36 > 0:29:37Why?

0:29:37 > 0:29:41Check you're insured, check you're legal. I'm guessing by this you're not.

0:29:41 > 0:29:43And the fact you threw something out of the car.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45Threw something out the car?

0:29:45 > 0:29:47Yeah, it is all on camera.

0:29:47 > 0:29:49Let's just chill out a minute,

0:29:49 > 0:29:51just have a sit back

0:29:51 > 0:29:54and let's wait for one of the cars to get to us.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00Got nothing that can harm anyone? Mate, do you mind taking that out my face, please? No.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04If you had pulled over, you wouldn't have attracted this attention.

0:30:04 > 0:30:06Jim carries out a body search...

0:30:08 > 0:30:12..and records evidence that may help a prosecution.

0:30:12 > 0:30:16I know I fucked up. This cash here...

0:30:16 > 0:30:18I'm just going to bag it in here.

0:30:18 > 0:30:20That's the only place I had to put it. I'd just come out of the gym.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23It's not a problem it's in there.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25Jim believes the driver may have thrown drugs

0:30:25 > 0:30:28out of the car during the pursuit.

0:30:28 > 0:30:31In this case he has a quantity of cash stuffed down his sock

0:30:31 > 0:30:34and it may be that forms part of the investigation

0:30:34 > 0:30:35if we were to find some drugs.

0:30:35 > 0:30:36I'll sit you in here.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39This has been searched prior to you getting in. That's fine.

0:30:39 > 0:30:41If anything's found in there when we get back there,

0:30:41 > 0:30:45that's contributed to yourself. I am being right with you guys.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52He's disclosed that he's a disqualified driver.

0:30:52 > 0:30:55So he's been arrested for dangerous driving and disqualified driving.

0:30:55 > 0:30:57The driving offences are just really a subsidiary

0:30:57 > 0:30:59to what I believe he's probably doing,

0:30:59 > 0:31:01which is dealing drugs.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04Ultimately that is what we want him for.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06Now it's a matter of retracing the route

0:31:06 > 0:31:09and trying to find what he has dumped, so we'll do that now.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13They search the street

0:31:13 > 0:31:15but have no luck.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18It's frustrating, really frustrating.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21We've walked the route

0:31:21 > 0:31:23and we're confident he has had something.

0:31:23 > 0:31:25As we walked up, he was trying to grab

0:31:25 > 0:31:28hold of whatever it was, presumably so he could throw it out.

0:31:28 > 0:31:30It's a needle in a haystack, though.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32Despite no drugs being found,

0:31:32 > 0:31:36the head-cam footage will be used as evidence against the driver.

0:31:36 > 0:31:39It's probably the first job we've had with the head-cams

0:31:39 > 0:31:41where it has shown us just a useful it can be.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44That's got a good evidential trail

0:31:44 > 0:31:46from him coming from that vehicle,

0:31:46 > 0:31:48losing him for a couple seconds,

0:31:48 > 0:31:50but you can see he has continued on the same path he was

0:31:50 > 0:31:52right through to arrest.

0:31:52 > 0:31:56For me, on a personal level, it covers me.

0:31:56 > 0:31:57We do have to use force

0:31:57 > 0:32:00to detain these people.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03I can demonstrate that the force I have used is reasonable.

0:32:03 > 0:32:08Checks reveal the reason why the driver failed to stop.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11He's on bail for a previous offence.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13They've bailed him with conditions

0:32:13 > 0:32:17not to be in any motor vehicle except a taxi or a bus.

0:32:17 > 0:32:21And his family have stumped up 30 grand as a surety.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24So the court saw fit to remand him

0:32:24 > 0:32:26and then give him 20 weeks

0:32:26 > 0:32:28within 24 hours of us arresting him.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31It's a cracking result, really good result.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41Day and night,

0:32:41 > 0:32:44West Yorkshire traffic cops

0:32:44 > 0:32:47patrol more than 7,000 miles of road -

0:32:47 > 0:32:49some of the busiest in Europe.

0:32:51 > 0:32:54With the latest technology and high-performance cars,

0:32:54 > 0:32:59they target organised criminals who travel across county borders.

0:33:01 > 0:33:04Officers Jim Duffy and Paul Smith

0:33:04 > 0:33:06are responding to a call for backup at Goole,

0:33:06 > 0:33:08an hour east of Bradford.

0:33:08 > 0:33:10Some of our colleagues have stopped a vehicle

0:33:10 > 0:33:12with four males in it.

0:33:12 > 0:33:17We're making our way up to Goole now to go and join them.

0:33:17 > 0:33:23The team are on the lookout to disrupt criminal activity.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26Take your hands out your pockets.

0:33:26 > 0:33:28...Till the whole car's been searched.

0:33:35 > 0:33:37They had four people stopped in a vehicle

0:33:37 > 0:33:40and they were having some problems identifying who was who.

0:33:40 > 0:33:43One of them was visiting a friend but the rest of them didn't seem to have

0:33:43 > 0:33:45any idea of what they were doing there except they'd come

0:33:45 > 0:33:47out for a drive.

0:33:47 > 0:33:49At that time of night, why would you drive all the way to Goole

0:33:49 > 0:33:52with not a clue what you're doing there?

0:33:54 > 0:33:57The suspects are searched thoroughly.

0:33:57 > 0:34:01Quite often people put things in their underwear.

0:34:01 > 0:34:03One guy in a car, I remember,

0:34:03 > 0:34:06who had about ?10,000 down his pants.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09Wearing the evidence-catching head-cam,

0:34:09 > 0:34:11Paul searches the vehicle.

0:34:11 > 0:34:14Quite a good hiding place in the boot

0:34:14 > 0:34:16is underneath the spare wheel.

0:34:16 > 0:34:21I was checking underneath to make sure there was nothing underneath.

0:34:21 > 0:34:24There's nothing suspicious in the boot.

0:34:24 > 0:34:29But another officer finds something under the passenger seat.

0:34:29 > 0:34:33One thing that criminals do is strap tools

0:34:33 > 0:34:35to the side of the engine area of the vehicle.

0:34:35 > 0:34:39That makes it hard to see them when you're initially looking.

0:34:39 > 0:34:41We have a camera on, we've filmed it

0:34:41 > 0:34:45where we've found it. No-one can argue that has not been found there.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50With potential evidence caught on camera,

0:34:50 > 0:34:54the cops believe the tools could be used for breaking into property.

0:34:54 > 0:34:56All four will be arrested for going equipped.

0:34:56 > 0:34:59We're on an industrial estate. They're not local lads to the area

0:34:59 > 0:35:01and as you can see on the roof,

0:35:01 > 0:35:04they have a selection of tools, gloves, torches.

0:35:06 > 0:35:10Going equipped is basically having items in your possession

0:35:10 > 0:35:15that the police believe could be used to commit offences, basically.

0:35:15 > 0:35:17In this case, they've got numerous tools -

0:35:17 > 0:35:20screwdrivers, wrenches, gloves, torches.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23We believe they could be used to commit a burglary

0:35:23 > 0:35:26or other theft offences, really.

0:35:26 > 0:35:31It's notoriously difficult to catch a burglary in progress.

0:35:31 > 0:35:35It happens, but ultimately, you're either going to catch them

0:35:35 > 0:35:38just before or perhaps further down the line,

0:35:38 > 0:35:40where they're scouting an area.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42Right, your next finger...

0:35:42 > 0:35:45Armed with another piece of hi tech kit,

0:35:45 > 0:35:47a mobile fingerprint device,

0:35:47 > 0:35:50Jim hopes to confirm the suspects' identities.

0:35:50 > 0:35:51It's a brilliant little device.

0:35:51 > 0:35:54It'll tell us who they are, full date of birth

0:35:54 > 0:35:56and it'll give us a reference number

0:35:56 > 0:35:58to link into the Police National Computer.

0:35:58 > 0:36:01It shows that the men in the car are known to the police.

0:36:02 > 0:36:06It catches people out a lot of the time, stops any of their games.

0:36:06 > 0:36:07Jump in.

0:36:07 > 0:36:10In my book, we're doing it properly.

0:36:10 > 0:36:12A lot of the time, they will kick up a fuss,

0:36:12 > 0:36:15because they don't agree with it and as far as they're concerned,

0:36:15 > 0:36:17we've not got enough to lock them up.

0:36:17 > 0:36:18They can argue it back at the nick.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43The vast majority of motorists are law-abiding.

0:36:43 > 0:36:47But there are some who use the roads to help commit crime.

0:36:47 > 0:36:52Effectively, it is like a large game of chess at times.

0:36:52 > 0:36:53Um...

0:36:53 > 0:36:58They are using tactics, techniques, to try and get ahead of the police.

0:36:58 > 0:37:00Road Crime Team officers

0:37:00 > 0:37:03are part of a bigger operation to target thieves.

0:37:03 > 0:37:06Briefing for this evening on Operation Overton.

0:37:06 > 0:37:10The intent is to reduce the number of overnight burglaries

0:37:10 > 0:37:11recorded through West Yorkshire

0:37:11 > 0:37:15and increase the opportunities for disruption and detecting

0:37:15 > 0:37:17of organised crime groups.

0:37:17 > 0:37:18'Someone's always watching.'

0:37:18 > 0:37:22Um...the activity, they think they can carry on and defend it.

0:37:22 > 0:37:24Well, they can't. And they won't.

0:37:27 > 0:37:31West Yorkshire burglary rates are some of the highest in the UK.

0:37:33 > 0:37:35People decide that they will take what's not theirs

0:37:35 > 0:37:38and somebody else has worked extremely hard for and got.

0:37:38 > 0:37:42The things that took us years, you know, working hard,

0:37:42 > 0:37:47not having holidays, working seven days a week, and then it's gone.

0:37:47 > 0:37:51When you see the victim's side, it can be quite harrowing for them.

0:37:51 > 0:37:53I can't believe that...

0:37:54 > 0:37:56..people can be so cruel.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00I think the effort that's put in on a night

0:38:00 > 0:38:02is worthwhile on a personal level.

0:38:02 > 0:38:06It's knowing that, potentially, the next phone call that comes

0:38:06 > 0:38:08to West Yorkshire Police reporting a burglary

0:38:08 > 0:38:09could be a member of my family.

0:38:11 > 0:38:14It's 10:30pm, South Bradford.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19Officers Paul Feather and Lee Welbourne

0:38:19 > 0:38:21are looking out for burglars.

0:38:21 > 0:38:25Tonight, we're on an operation in the Bradford area,

0:38:25 > 0:38:27gathering intelligence and also,

0:38:27 > 0:38:30we're paying particular attention

0:38:30 > 0:38:34to the four-wheel drives around the Bradford area.

0:38:35 > 0:38:39It's not long before the car's numberplate recognition system

0:38:39 > 0:38:41clocks a suspect.

0:38:41 > 0:38:43This four-wheel drive's been, used in crime.

0:38:46 > 0:38:47Receiving, Dave.

0:38:51 > 0:38:53The numberplate recognition system is the main technology we use.

0:38:53 > 0:38:56It's just brilliant we've got these cameras in the cars that just

0:38:56 > 0:38:58read the numberplates of the cars

0:38:58 > 0:39:01but then they relate to an intelligence system,

0:39:01 > 0:39:04and feed back pretty much instantly to us

0:39:04 > 0:39:06any intelligence on that vehicle.

0:39:06 > 0:39:08Get some sirens on.

0:39:08 > 0:39:10SIRENS BLARE AND HORN BEEPS

0:39:17 > 0:39:21It was a bit weird approaching that car because it had tinted windows, so I couldn't see in.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24You don't know what you're going to expect.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30Hiya. Hi, mate. Is it your car? It's my car, mate. Oh, is it?

0:39:30 > 0:39:32Just want to have a word with us?

0:39:32 > 0:39:36I've opened the driver's door and I could see there were three occupants.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39And I recognised the front passenger in the car.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41I've dealt with him previously.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44But they were clearly on edge, so as I've asked the driver to get

0:39:44 > 0:39:47out the car, I've taken the keys out of the ignition.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57Romeo, Charlie, 4-1, we've got a runner. Gelderd Road.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04My colleague is chasing on foot, and obviously, I am in a nice,

0:40:04 > 0:40:06big, high-powered car.

0:40:06 > 0:40:09There's two in the car. Do I leave them or do I go?

0:40:11 > 0:40:14Yeah, Gelderd Road. He's running into a building called Forsyth's.

0:40:14 > 0:40:16He's going over a fence.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19I thought I were quite quick, the first 100m.

0:40:19 > 0:40:21Yeah, he were a little bit in front of me,

0:40:21 > 0:40:24and I just couldn't quite get near enough to grab him.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27But Paul has come flying up the road.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30Got an officer chasing on foot.

0:40:30 > 0:40:33It's Gelderd Point, Gelderd Point. It's a mixed-race male.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37I've got in front of him with the police vehicle.

0:40:37 > 0:40:39He's turned back on himself, gone across Gelderd Road

0:40:39 > 0:40:42and then jumped over a perimeter fence.

0:40:42 > 0:40:44He's gone into the compound there.

0:40:46 > 0:40:50Within minutes, a dog unit arrives at the scene. Got a dog here.

0:40:52 > 0:40:54Yeah, he's done one from a vehicle.

0:40:54 > 0:40:58Erm, I think my colleague's with the vehicle now.

0:40:58 > 0:41:00It's the driver himself. He's run in here.

0:41:00 > 0:41:03He's gone in this yard, so he must be in here somewhere. Right.

0:41:03 > 0:41:08Which vehicle is it? It's just behind you, there. The four-wheel-drive.

0:41:08 > 0:41:10Gone over the compound, gone over some fencing, which,

0:41:10 > 0:41:13with all my kit on, would have been difficult to get over.

0:41:13 > 0:41:18'But I could see that Paul had gone with the car to head him off at the other side.'

0:41:20 > 0:41:24He's not come out down the bottom end of the actual industrial estate,

0:41:24 > 0:41:27so I think he'll be struggling to get out this way.

0:41:27 > 0:41:31So he must be possibly still in the grounds somewhere.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34There's still two passengers left in the car.

0:41:34 > 0:41:38Leaving the dogs to take up the hunt for the AWOL driver,

0:41:38 > 0:41:41Paul and Lee return to the car.

0:41:44 > 0:41:45Putting you in the car. What for?

0:41:45 > 0:41:49Speak to my colleague and I'm going to go and look where I last saw him.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51What's he run off for?

0:41:53 > 0:41:55Got the dog out? Yeah, it's up there.

0:41:55 > 0:41:59Is there someone else in t'car? Yeah, there's a passenger in t'back.

0:41:59 > 0:42:02He's saying it's his car. All right.

0:42:02 > 0:42:04Lee goes to look for the driver

0:42:04 > 0:42:08while Paul speaks with the passenger who says he owns the car.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11Is it your car, then? It is, mate, yeah. Have you got documents for it?

0:42:11 > 0:42:12I have. Here, look.

0:42:14 > 0:42:17Are you smoking in here? I am, cos he's just put me in with the fag.

0:42:17 > 0:42:18Get that out of my car.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23Blow it out. Don't blow smoke in me car!

0:42:23 > 0:42:25DOG BARKS

0:42:27 > 0:42:30The search is now closing in on the missing driver.

0:42:32 > 0:42:36They'll need to catch him soon or they risk losing him altogether.

0:42:41 > 0:42:44Eight miles north in Leeds,

0:42:44 > 0:42:46Craig and Lee are two hours into their night shift.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51Headingley is an interesting place on a night.

0:42:51 > 0:42:54It's the town that never sleeps, really. Probably won't be that busy tonight.

0:42:54 > 0:42:56But because it has got so many students,

0:42:56 > 0:43:00there are a lot of burglaries around here, especially when it comes

0:43:00 > 0:43:03to the new term, because every night is just fancy dress night.

0:43:03 > 0:43:06You can have a foot chase with a seven-foot banana. Yeah.

0:43:06 > 0:43:09On nights, we are out looking for burglars, attending old jobs.

0:43:09 > 0:43:13At this point here, we've just seen a car travelling

0:43:13 > 0:43:16in the opposite direction to us, heading up in Otley.

0:43:16 > 0:43:18As we have come round, he's disappeared,

0:43:18 > 0:43:21and usually the fact that they have disappeared

0:43:21 > 0:43:25as soon as you've turned round shows they are trying to avoid you.

0:43:25 > 0:43:28If they're trying to avoid you, then there's usually a reason.

0:43:28 > 0:43:34Lee spots two police community support officers walking past and radios through.

0:43:35 > 0:43:403-4, the PCSOs there up at Guiseley, there's a green Toyota,

0:43:40 > 0:43:42and I think it's just gone past them.

0:43:42 > 0:43:45They didn't see which direction it went off in, did they?

0:43:45 > 0:43:48There was tail lights just disappearing around that corner.

0:43:48 > 0:43:52The officers on foot have stated they have seen the vehicle and seen it

0:43:52 > 0:43:55pull in to a car park behind a restaurant just off the main street.

0:43:55 > 0:43:59Where's the driver gone, then? Were you driving this? No.

0:43:59 > 0:44:03When we first arrived, the chap who was with the car tells us

0:44:03 > 0:44:05that he hasn't been the driver, that they have just come into that

0:44:05 > 0:44:09alleyway and that the driver has gone off towards one of the curry houses.

0:44:09 > 0:44:13There's just the entrance down into the kitchen down there. In here?

0:44:13 > 0:44:17You can't get in up there. I'll just go and see if it's round the front.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21Is it one of your...? Do you do deliveries? We do.

0:44:21 > 0:44:24Yeah. Is it one of your vehicles? No, not as far as I am aware.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27Well, somebody has just dumped it in the back and apparently come into this building.

0:44:27 > 0:44:28Not as far as I'm aware.

0:44:28 > 0:44:31We've carried out checks around the restaurant.

0:44:31 > 0:44:33Nobody has gone through any of the kitchens,

0:44:33 > 0:44:35nobody has come down the passageway.

0:44:35 > 0:44:37With no sign of the alleged driver,

0:44:37 > 0:44:41it falls on the passenger to explain who was driving.

0:44:41 > 0:44:43The chap was sat there, quite casually, quite smugly,

0:44:43 > 0:44:48just sat smoking a cigarette, clearly thinking there was no way

0:44:48 > 0:44:51we could prove that he was driving the vehicle.

0:44:51 > 0:44:54It then becomes a game.

0:44:54 > 0:44:57Right, I've just been down there and nobody has been in this way.

0:44:57 > 0:45:02These officers been at the front and they haven't seen anybody coming out the front, have you? No.

0:45:07 > 0:45:09He's my driver.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11Are you disqualified?

0:45:13 > 0:45:16'We were able to run him through the systems,

0:45:16 > 0:45:18'which confirmed he was a disqualified driver.'

0:45:18 > 0:45:20Disqualified drivers shouldn't be on the road.

0:45:20 > 0:45:23They're disqualified from driving, they're banned,

0:45:23 > 0:45:25they are not allowed to be there.

0:45:25 > 0:45:27Which is why it's important that when we come across them,

0:45:27 > 0:45:29we deal with them for that offence.

0:45:29 > 0:45:32Craig needs a description of the missing driver.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34Has he got a pink T-shirt on as well, then? No.

0:45:34 > 0:45:38Does he look like you? Similar, yeah. Does he?

0:45:38 > 0:45:41But he hasn't got a pink T-shirt on? No. No, OK.

0:45:41 > 0:45:45So where's his coat? Sorry? Where's his coat?

0:45:45 > 0:45:47He's left it in the car. That's his, is it? Yeah.

0:45:49 > 0:45:53Craig pulls a jacket out of the car which is the right

0:45:53 > 0:45:55size for the male in the vehicle.

0:45:55 > 0:45:56Have you had a look through this?

0:45:56 > 0:46:00'He's just trying to catch him out, really.' You're cold.

0:46:01 > 0:46:03'It were freezing cold that night.'

0:46:05 > 0:46:09Put the jacket on if you want. I'm all right, thanks. Probably fit you, won't it? Same size, you said.

0:46:09 > 0:46:11He stood at the side of the car, he were shivering,

0:46:11 > 0:46:14and it were quite obviously his coat.

0:46:14 > 0:46:16Do you know what obstructing a constable is, lying to the police?

0:46:16 > 0:46:18Yeah. 3-4, go ahead.

0:46:22 > 0:46:26We have cameras on this road out here. Right. OK?

0:46:26 > 0:46:29If we have to go back and review those and find one male

0:46:29 > 0:46:32in this vehicle with a pink top, OK, not only will you be done

0:46:32 > 0:46:36for disqualified driving, driving without insurance, etc, etc, etc,

0:46:36 > 0:46:39you will also be done for obstructing a police constable.

0:46:39 > 0:46:41I've told you I'm not lying, so I'm not going to...

0:46:41 > 0:46:43Excuse me if I don't believe you.

0:46:43 > 0:46:45You're arguing with me for no reason.

0:46:45 > 0:46:47You know, you're just being funny for no reason.

0:46:47 > 0:46:52I'm not being funny with you, mate. I am trying to get to the bottom of what has happened. Bottom of what?

0:46:52 > 0:46:55I think he's just lying through his teeth. I think he was driving.

0:46:55 > 0:46:58I've had a look on our hard drive for the video of it,

0:46:58 > 0:47:01but the angle he's come round at, the camera angle on the car

0:47:01 > 0:47:03as it's come round, isn't good enough.

0:47:05 > 0:47:11Lee gives the passenger every chance to admit that he was driving.

0:47:11 > 0:47:14Do me a favour, put your cigarette out, come and have a seat in our car.

0:47:18 > 0:47:21I'm not going to let go of you. Because at this moment in time,

0:47:21 > 0:47:25you may be in a position where you will get arrested. Put that out.

0:47:25 > 0:47:27Their only hope now is a confession.

0:47:33 > 0:47:35Just want to have a word with us?

0:47:37 > 0:47:40There's another driver missing in action 15 miles south in Morley.

0:47:42 > 0:47:46Officers Lee Welbourne and Paul Feather are hunting the driver

0:47:46 > 0:47:51of a black Nissan who has escaped into a nearby industrial estate.

0:47:51 > 0:47:53A police dog has joined the hunt.

0:47:53 > 0:47:55DOG BARKS IN DISTANCE

0:47:55 > 0:47:59Sudden barking suggests they're closing in on the driver. Oi!

0:48:03 > 0:48:04That's him. Yeah.

0:48:13 > 0:48:15DOG BARKS

0:48:18 > 0:48:20The runner is finally cuffed.

0:48:20 > 0:48:22What's that camera on me for?

0:48:22 > 0:48:24Stay still!

0:48:25 > 0:48:27Yeah, basically,

0:48:27 > 0:48:31I was just trying to contact the security firm on the telephone

0:48:31 > 0:48:34to let me into the compound, and he's just come out of a bush, hands

0:48:34 > 0:48:37in the air, "It's a fair cop, guv," and given himself up, basically.

0:48:37 > 0:48:40DOG BARKS Why did you run off? I've given myself up cos I haven't done owt.

0:48:40 > 0:48:43Right, why did you run off, then? Because they fucking scared me, man.

0:48:43 > 0:48:47Scared you? Yeah. That made you run off? Yeah.

0:48:47 > 0:48:49I'm not wanted or anything.

0:48:49 > 0:48:52DOG BARKS

0:48:52 > 0:48:54Are you giving us the right details? Yeah.

0:48:54 > 0:48:57Because we'll find out exactly who you are. Yeah, I am.

0:48:57 > 0:49:00The driver's story isn't convincing Paul.

0:49:00 > 0:49:03Is it your vehicle?

0:49:03 > 0:49:05I've just told you, yeah. And who's he? What?

0:49:05 > 0:49:08You've let him use your vehicle. I've given him a test-drive.

0:49:08 > 0:49:11No, you haven't, you've let him use it. I've given him a test-drive!

0:49:11 > 0:49:14He came up with some cock and bull tale about him doing a test-drive,

0:49:14 > 0:49:17but at that time of night, I don't recall anybody

0:49:17 > 0:49:21wanting to do a test-drive at that ungodly hour of the evening.

0:49:21 > 0:49:23So he won't be insured, then, I take it?

0:49:23 > 0:49:26DOG BARKS I take it he's not insured to drive your vehicle?

0:49:26 > 0:49:29Best ask him, hadn't you, mate? You're the owner of it.

0:49:29 > 0:49:32I've got to ask you, haven't I? We'll sit in the police car. Am I under arrest?

0:49:32 > 0:49:35Yeah. They're all critics, aren't they?

0:49:35 > 0:49:37Sort... Sort him out, sort him out.

0:49:40 > 0:49:43Can you just run us a person through, please?

0:49:43 > 0:49:46He's saying it's his car, now it's not his car.

0:49:46 > 0:49:48Can't phone the insurance, so, at the minute,

0:49:48 > 0:49:51we could suspect that it has been stolen.

0:49:51 > 0:49:54So we'll just do some checks now

0:49:54 > 0:49:56and we'll decide what we're going to play it as.

0:49:56 > 0:49:59Well, lock him up, then. He's locked up. Right.

0:49:59 > 0:50:02Why has he run away? Why are they being so obstructive?

0:50:02 > 0:50:05Is there something in that vehicle that they don't want us to see?

0:50:05 > 0:50:07Received, thank you.

0:50:08 > 0:50:11He's given us false details. Looks like he is possibly disqualified,

0:50:11 > 0:50:13that's probably why he's run from t'vehicle.

0:50:13 > 0:50:15They're both well known to us.

0:50:15 > 0:50:18It's been confirmed the runner is a disqualified driver.

0:50:18 > 0:50:22Now the cops need to establish if there's any intent to commit crime.

0:50:28 > 0:50:30This is where we can start to take control now.

0:50:30 > 0:50:32We've got the rest of our team here.

0:50:37 > 0:50:40It's not long before the cops make some discoveries.

0:50:42 > 0:50:44There's some massive, big spanners in t'car,

0:50:44 > 0:50:46and some bolt croppers and gloves.

0:50:46 > 0:50:50Obviously, it flagged up on our machine.

0:50:50 > 0:50:52That's why we went after that.

0:50:53 > 0:50:58They've gone through the car with a fine-tooth comb. Found tools.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01And that's enabled us to arrest them all.

0:51:01 > 0:51:02The vehicle's been searched.

0:51:02 > 0:51:06As a result of what's in it, I'm arresting you on suspicion of being equipped for theft.

0:51:06 > 0:51:09Why are you holding them? I'm not going nowhere. Why are you being like that?

0:51:09 > 0:51:13Why are you being funny like that, eh? How the fuck do you expect me to get out there

0:51:13 > 0:51:15and you're holding the handcuffs? They're fine where they are.

0:51:15 > 0:51:18I'm not going to do owt to him, I assure you,

0:51:18 > 0:51:20because that's a fucking assault, ain't it? Right, yeah.

0:51:20 > 0:51:22And I don't want an assault, do I?

0:51:22 > 0:51:25Calm down. I'm not going to pull them, I'll just hold them there.

0:51:25 > 0:51:28I tell you what, listen. Listen to me, now, very carefully.

0:51:28 > 0:51:30If you start kicking off in my car...

0:51:30 > 0:51:32I'm not going to start kicking off, I just told you, haven't I?

0:51:32 > 0:51:35Don't come here with your attitude to me! I just fucking told you!

0:51:35 > 0:51:37Listen, you will go in a van, do you understand me?

0:51:37 > 0:51:41Do you want to go in a van? The car. I'm going normal, I don't want to do anything now.

0:51:41 > 0:51:43If you start kicking off, you go in a van.

0:51:43 > 0:51:45I'm not... Fucking hell, how many times?! Right.

0:51:45 > 0:51:49There's nowt worse than having somebody in your car kicking off.

0:51:49 > 0:51:52So, calm yourself down, cos I'm going to be driving this car.

0:51:52 > 0:51:54So you behave yourself.

0:51:54 > 0:51:56The consequences can be serious.

0:51:57 > 0:52:01It's happened a few years ago where a prisoner came through

0:52:01 > 0:52:03the seat and yanked the handbrake on a police car

0:52:03 > 0:52:07and the officer got killed as a result of that.

0:52:12 > 0:52:16Paul and Lee now have to take the suspect to the station.

0:52:23 > 0:52:27Back in Guiseley, North Leeds, Craig and Lee still have no evidence

0:52:27 > 0:52:30to prove that this man was driving whilst disqualified.

0:52:32 > 0:52:35If he doesn't confess, they'll have to release him.

0:52:35 > 0:52:38Right, I don't like having my time wasted

0:52:38 > 0:52:40and you are majorly wasting my time at the moment.

0:52:40 > 0:52:43Officer, what do you want me to say? I want you to be honest with me

0:52:43 > 0:52:45and the fact that you were driving that vehicle.

0:52:45 > 0:52:49You know you were, I know you were. Your only defence is saying that chap was driving.

0:52:49 > 0:52:52You're a disqualified driver who shouldn't be driving that vehicle,

0:52:52 > 0:52:55so you have got every reason to be sat here lying to me.

0:52:55 > 0:52:57Let's not waste any more time.

0:52:59 > 0:53:03OK, I'm going to caution you. You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you fail

0:53:03 > 0:53:07to mention something which you later rely on in court. Anything you say may be given in evidence.

0:53:07 > 0:53:10I think he realises it is getting a little bit more serious now.

0:53:10 > 0:53:13Let's stop playing games. Yeah. Were you driving that car?

0:53:13 > 0:53:14Were you driving that car?

0:53:16 > 0:53:18Pay attention to me. Yeah.

0:53:18 > 0:53:21Stop looking like a naughty schoolboy looking around.

0:53:21 > 0:53:24We got him in the back of the vehicle, we spoke to him.

0:53:24 > 0:53:26It's trying to give him every opportunity.

0:53:26 > 0:53:30We've told him, you're not going to be arrested, we can deal with it at the side of the road.

0:53:30 > 0:53:32It's a lot warmer in here than it was out there. You'll warm up.

0:53:32 > 0:53:35Were you driving that vehicle? Yeah. Right.

0:53:35 > 0:53:39And there's the confession that we've spent about 20 minutes waiting for.

0:53:39 > 0:53:43I don't want to waste your time and I don't want to waste my time.

0:53:43 > 0:53:46Well, how much of my time have you wasted by lying so far?

0:53:46 > 0:53:48I know, you've got bigger criminals to catch.

0:53:48 > 0:53:51We can deal with it on the roadside, can't we? That's fine.

0:53:51 > 0:53:55Why have you lied to us? I'm scared. Because you're disqualified?

0:53:55 > 0:53:57Yeah. Right.

0:53:59 > 0:54:03It's a hard lesson for the man. He now faces an appearance in court.

0:54:04 > 0:54:06So what have you learned from tonight?

0:54:08 > 0:54:11Not to be so stupid. It's a mug's game.

0:54:16 > 0:54:18'There is always something to learn from things like this.'

0:54:18 > 0:54:21We don't just walk away from things.

0:54:21 > 0:54:24If it requires a little bit of work, then we'll do a bit of work.

0:54:24 > 0:54:28It would've been resolved ages ago had he just turned round

0:54:28 > 0:54:30and said, "Yeah, I were driving."

0:54:31 > 0:54:34The world is full of liars. Yeah.

0:54:34 > 0:54:37We always get to the bottom of it in the end.

0:54:37 > 0:54:38THEY LAUGH

0:54:38 > 0:54:41But it's nice when they don't get away with it.

0:54:52 > 0:54:55Further south, in Leeds city centre,

0:54:55 > 0:54:59Lee Welbourne is bringing in the driver of the black Nissan.

0:54:59 > 0:55:01DOG BARKS Stay still!

0:55:02 > 0:55:04He's a disqualified driver,

0:55:04 > 0:55:08but he and the others arrested may have a legitimate reason

0:55:08 > 0:55:10for having tools in their car.

0:55:10 > 0:55:13I'm not going to have to tell you again about that car, am I?

0:55:13 > 0:55:16Stick it up your arse.

0:55:16 > 0:55:20We've stopped a car with known criminals in that we believe are up to no good.

0:55:20 > 0:55:24With the man's behaviour still a cause of concern to the cops,

0:55:24 > 0:55:28he'll remain handcuffed even though he's inside the police station.

0:55:28 > 0:55:30I'm just got to sit down.

0:55:30 > 0:55:33Why are you holding the handcuffs on me here? Eh?

0:55:33 > 0:55:35Like I'm going to do summat. Eh?

0:55:35 > 0:55:39Eh? Why are you holding them here? Eh?

0:55:39 > 0:55:41Why are you still holding them?

0:55:41 > 0:55:44What are you doing, you fat, horrible little bastard?! Calm down.

0:55:44 > 0:55:46What are you doing, what are you doing, what are you doing, eh?

0:55:46 > 0:55:51Calm down. Calm down. Sit down. Calm down. But what...?

0:55:51 > 0:55:55So he's been with us about half an hour, 45 minutes, at least.

0:55:55 > 0:55:57He's still unpredictable, still carrying on.

0:55:57 > 0:55:59Are you arresting me? You'll be booked in.

0:55:59 > 0:56:02If the sergeant says he won't accept you, he won't accept you,

0:56:02 > 0:56:05will he? I want to see my solicitor. That's up to him, isn't it?

0:56:05 > 0:56:08That is your entitlement, in't it?

0:56:08 > 0:56:10Well, good luck to you, if you get a pay-out.

0:56:10 > 0:56:13MAN RESPONDS INAUDIBLY

0:56:13 > 0:56:19That's all right. Crack on. That's not a problem.

0:56:23 > 0:56:26All three suspects will be questioned further.

0:56:26 > 0:56:31For now, the driver who tried to escape the police will be given a cell for the night.

0:56:31 > 0:56:34Based on that information, I'm going to authorise his detention here.

0:56:34 > 0:56:39That is to secure and preserve evidence and obtain further evidence by way of questioning. OK?

0:56:39 > 0:56:43Sometimes, they do get away with it, but, you know,

0:56:43 > 0:56:48all we need is enough to fetch them in and we've done our job there.

0:56:48 > 0:56:52If we've prevented crime, it's just as good as locking them up.

0:56:52 > 0:56:54Prevention is as good as protection.

0:56:54 > 0:56:57There you go. What, are you going to get me a mattress?

0:57:00 > 0:57:03Turn that on, want to see where I'm walking, don't I?

0:57:03 > 0:57:05We'll get somebody to come and sort it.

0:57:05 > 0:57:09'When we do these operations, we get some fantastic results.'

0:57:09 > 0:57:12You know, it was a good stop and a good result at the end.

0:57:20 > 0:57:22The driver of the black Nissan

0:57:22 > 0:57:26was convicted of driving whilst disqualified and obstructing police.

0:57:26 > 0:57:29He was banned from driving for 12 months

0:57:29 > 0:57:31and sentenced to eight weeks imprisonment.

0:57:31 > 0:57:33No charges were brought against him

0:57:33 > 0:57:37or his passengers for going equipped to steal.

0:57:37 > 0:57:40The disqualified traveller of the blue Toyota admitted to

0:57:40 > 0:57:42driving the vehicle.

0:57:42 > 0:57:43He failed to turn up to be sentenced

0:57:43 > 0:57:46and is currently wanted by the police.

0:57:48 > 0:57:51The fail-to-stop driver pleaded guilty to drink-driving,

0:57:51 > 0:57:57was disqualified for 36 months and fined ?470.

0:57:57 > 0:57:59There was no further action taken against the men

0:57:59 > 0:58:02suspected of going equipped to steal.

0:58:02 > 0:58:05The taxi driver who made an illegal U-turn

0:58:05 > 0:58:09received three points on his licence and a ?35 fine.

0:58:10 > 0:58:15And the man who ran whilst on bail was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison.
