:00:12. > :00:19.Tonight, Bedfordshire traffic cops are cracking down on bad drivers.
:00:19. > :00:22.I'm going to stop it. Wrong side of the road. How many years have you
:00:22. > :00:29.been driving? Not long. With all due respect, it shows. Someone
:00:29. > :00:34.didn't make it. On the motorway, down country lanes, and even in car
:00:34. > :00:41.parks. Because when bad drivers get behind the wheel. All too often bad
:00:41. > :00:48.things happen. We respond to crashes, they take
:00:48. > :00:58.uninsured cars off the road, we watch speeders. They see us as
:00:58. > :01:14.
:01:14. > :01:20.persecuting motorist, what we are Being traffic cop isn't just a job
:01:20. > :01:24.for the boys. Even though for PC Sam Sparkes, it does sometimes feel
:01:24. > :01:29.that way. It is a very much male orientated world. Even now, there
:01:29. > :01:33.is only three of us, there is only three females on traffic. Sam was
:01:33. > :01:37.once a professional dancer, more used to carrying out pirouettes
:01:37. > :01:42.than pursuits. These days she dances to a different beat.
:01:42. > :01:45.trained in ballet, jazz, modern, tap, it is not a natural
:01:45. > :01:53.progression, it couldn't have been a bad decision, because I'm still
:01:53. > :01:58.doing it 16 years later. She swapped her dancing shoes for
:01:58. > :02:03.driving shoes. And is now on her way to a serious road traffic
:02:03. > :02:10.accident. All we know is it is one vehicle, four person, possibly
:02:10. > :02:13.trapped, and fire on rig. Your automatic thought is first,
:02:13. > :02:17.how many people are injured, and second, how many people have we got
:02:17. > :02:25.going. It took me about five to seven
:02:25. > :02:28.minutes to get there, it is in a country road, it is quite bendy.
:02:28. > :02:34.It looks like complete carnage when you turn up, you have to get right
:02:34. > :02:39.to the front to see what you actually have got. On screen
:02:39. > :02:43.already to help her get a bigger picture, is another of the trio of
:02:43. > :02:48.traffic women, Shona's best mate, Shona Gillan. It is nice to have
:02:48. > :02:52.somebody else at the scene to help you, especially when there is so
:02:52. > :02:59.much going on. It did look pretty bad, everyone was pushing around,
:02:59. > :03:03.that is a seen they need to get him out pretty quick. The paramedic
:03:03. > :03:06.says we have possibly life changing injuries to this male. Four young
:03:06. > :03:13.friends were in the car when it scratched spectacularly. A local
:03:13. > :03:18.nurse was the first to come across the wreckage. I am IRA a community
:03:18. > :03:23.nurse coming home from - I'm a community nurse coming home from
:03:23. > :03:27.dinner, there was a bystander who has disappeared. The lady was
:03:27. > :03:31.shocked, but she the forethought to make the call to the emergency
:03:31. > :03:38.services. It had gone into a concrete post and a tree and spun
:03:38. > :03:43.across both lanes. One of the survivor, incredibly, is completely
:03:43. > :03:50.unhurt. How old is he? 18. Does he have a license? Yes. You were a
:03:50. > :03:55.front passenger? Yeah. We were just going 60, maybe, and as we came
:03:55. > :03:59.round the corner up there felt the back go, he tried to correct it, as
:03:59. > :04:04.he tried to correct it just went to the other side and tried to go back
:04:04. > :04:08.again and it spun straight out at that point I was already trying to
:04:08. > :04:15.shield myself from the crash. race against time to free the
:04:15. > :04:18.trapped driver. Serious head injuries, and he is deteriorating
:04:18. > :04:23.quickly because of internal bleeding. Good call. The accident
:04:23. > :04:26.is serious enough to call in the Air Ambulance and specialist crash
:04:26. > :04:29.scene investigators. The passengers appeared to have cuts and bruises,
:04:29. > :04:34.until they are taken out and assessed, they could be serious.
:04:34. > :04:38.are told the driver has life- changing injuries, they are
:04:38. > :04:43.querying an internal bleed because he has deteriorated quickly. He was
:04:43. > :04:46.trapped by his leg. When a paramedic says it is going to be
:04:46. > :04:50.life threatening and life-change, you think the worst, and you think
:04:50. > :04:54.he has a relative I will have to break the news to. New drivers
:04:55. > :04:57.between the ages of 17-24, are by far the most at risk of being
:04:57. > :05:01.killed on Britain's roads. Fortunately, now that the trapped
:05:01. > :05:05.driver has been freed, it has become apparent that his life is no
:05:05. > :05:09.longer in danger. I believe he had some sort of head
:05:09. > :05:12.injury, he had lost consciousness, it could have been the angle of how
:05:12. > :05:17.he was in the car. That was our main concern. Once they got him out
:05:17. > :05:20.and assessed him, it was clear the injuries weren't as bad as they
:05:20. > :05:28.first thought. That means no special helicopter treatment. He
:05:28. > :05:34.will be taking the ambulance. The emergency services can be stood
:05:34. > :05:38.down. Now that the driver is not as badly injured as first thought,
:05:38. > :05:42.he's got some explaining do. Have you got a provisional? No, nothing
:05:42. > :05:46.at all. I went into the back of the ambulance and explained who I was,
:05:46. > :05:49.and asked if he would like me to notify somebody. At that point he
:05:49. > :05:54.told me had no driving license or insurance.
:05:54. > :05:59.It is a bombshell. No insurance, no license. I have run him through the
:05:59. > :06:05.Police National Computer, it has transpired he hasn't got MOT or tax,
:06:05. > :06:13.he has nothing. What sympathy Sam might have had for the driver has
:06:13. > :06:18.flown swiftly away. Breaking the news to his parents is
:06:18. > :06:21.going to be even more tricky now. Initially it was quite serious, the
:06:21. > :06:25.reason I'm ringing you is it isn't believed to be serious now, I
:06:25. > :06:29.wouldn't tell you over the phone. I just warranted to make you aware,
:06:29. > :06:34.if you were expecting him, I would hate for you to panic if he didn't
:06:34. > :06:38.turn up. I spoke to his mum on the phone, she sounded satisfied he
:06:38. > :06:43.should be behind the wheel of car. That concerned me. I can remember
:06:43. > :06:45.saying at the time saying to Tony it didn't fit right that she didn't
:06:45. > :06:51.seemed surprised she was driving. It wasn't until I got to the
:06:51. > :06:53.hospital I realised why. He has committed very serious offence,
:06:53. > :06:58.potentially he could have killed all his passengers, including
:06:58. > :07:05.himself. The task now is to find out exactly why the uninsured and
:07:05. > :07:11.unlicensed driver lost control of his car. It was a Vauxhall Omeaga,
:07:11. > :07:16.2.5, petrol, it is a powerful one. Rear wheel drive, so not the best
:07:16. > :07:19.sort of car to drive as an inexperienced driver. There is not
:07:19. > :07:25.a lot there to lose control of, is there.
:07:25. > :07:29.Apart from inexperience, another factor could be a space saver spare
:07:29. > :07:36.tyre on the back of the Omeaga. I have recovery for what is left of
:07:36. > :07:40.this car. It is now a convertible and doorless. Manufacturers give
:07:40. > :07:44.specifications for that tyre to be used on the road, that is not more
:07:44. > :07:50.than 50 mile an hour. To be changed at the nearest opportunity, not to
:07:50. > :07:55.be used all the time. So driving at speed, on a country road, with a
:07:55. > :07:59.space save tyre is just asking for trouble. Luck, that is the only
:07:59. > :08:05.reason why no-one was killed in this case. You have seen the
:08:05. > :08:09.wreckage of the car. We have seen a lot less where people have died.
:08:09. > :08:12.It is time for Sam to get hard facts from the illegal driver and
:08:12. > :08:18.his passengers at the hospital. as parent would expect the police
:08:18. > :08:22.to do as much as they could to prosecute that person. I personally
:08:22. > :08:28.feel as I parent I would want to kill him! Whilst they account for
:08:29. > :08:34.only 12% of all drivers, young drivers make up 27% of all the road
:08:34. > :08:39.fatalities. And of these, three quarters are male.
:08:39. > :08:44.The driver, it turns out, has got a bad back injury. Your mum is aware,
:08:44. > :08:49.I have given her a call, she's on her way down. Oh no, that means I
:08:49. > :08:59.have to see her. I need to get some details off you, I think you and I
:08:59. > :09:01.both know we need to have a chat. You needing to away. She doesn't
:09:01. > :09:05.know, does she?, she's going to have to find out.
:09:06. > :09:10.I will tell her. You may not have that option, I'm going to need to
:09:10. > :09:14.speak to her as well. I need to speak to all of them. I was very
:09:14. > :09:17.unsympathetic because I was angry. That could be my children in a few
:09:17. > :09:20.years time, going out unwittingly with a friend. I don't think he
:09:20. > :09:23.realised at the time what he could have done. They are going to find
:09:23. > :09:29.out the situation, because they have to, and they have a right to
:09:29. > :09:34.know. You have got to be ware that the parents are going to go meantal.
:09:34. > :09:38.They have a right to know that he wasn't the driver he thought he was.
:09:38. > :09:41.I don't know if you are aware, he hasn't got a driving license or
:09:41. > :09:47.insurance. The driver not having a license has come as a complete
:09:47. > :09:53.shock to his friends. He doesn't have a driving license. Does he not
:09:53. > :09:58.have a license. Nope. He hasn't passed or he has? Did you know that.
:09:58. > :10:02.No, because we got stopped. He's saying he hasn't. The same four
:10:02. > :10:06.people and the vehicle were tropd stopped with him driving. They have
:10:06. > :10:09.been stopped and dealt with and sent on their way accordingly, they
:10:09. > :10:14.would have no indication that there was something untoward. I wish he
:10:14. > :10:21.had told me, I'm quite disappointed in him, to be honest. The biggest
:10:21. > :10:24.shock of all is he took his mum for a ride. I spoke to his mum and she
:10:24. > :10:27.didn't sound surprised, it transpires six to eight months ago
:10:27. > :10:32.he has left the house, after telling his mum he has taken his
:10:32. > :10:38.driving test. Two hours later, has come home full of the Joyce of
:10:38. > :10:43.spring saying he has passed. He has never taken his test or had a
:10:43. > :10:46.driving lesson. She realised he has just been living a lie and driving
:10:46. > :10:51.her and her sister and friends around for the last eight months.
:10:51. > :10:55.In the control room news of another accident is coming in, in Bedford
:10:55. > :10:59.town centre, involving a motorist and cyclist. Paramedics are already
:10:59. > :11:04.there, they need help from their traffic cop colleagues. Shona is on
:11:04. > :11:09.her way. The ambulance have called to us say
:11:09. > :11:15.the car that hit the pushbike is still at the skeernings and maybe
:11:15. > :11:18.possibly blocking the road. - the scene, and may be possibly blocking
:11:19. > :11:24.the road. You hear they have head injuries, you hear of a cyclist hit
:11:24. > :11:30.by car with a head injure, if he hasn't a helmet on we could have a
:11:30. > :11:36.serious injurey. When I got there I saw a pushbike looking sorry for
:11:36. > :11:40.itself. There is no sign of the cyclist. This lady was cycling
:11:40. > :11:44.along and he has hit her bonnet, and he has a cut on the side of his
:11:44. > :11:48.face or back of the head. And left his bike there. The lady that had
:11:48. > :11:53.hit the bike was in a severe state of shock. Talk me through what
:11:53. > :12:00.happened, my love? I have just gone past this van, and then he just
:12:00. > :12:05.came out on me, on my bonnet, landed on the floor. I wasn't going
:12:05. > :12:08.fast, I couldn't even find a brake. She never had an accident in her
:12:08. > :12:11.life, the only time she realised something had happened is as soon
:12:11. > :12:15.as she hit the lad on the bike. Because you have been involved in a
:12:15. > :12:19.road traffic collision, we ask everyone to provide a sample of
:12:19. > :12:29.breath. She was asked to supply a sample of breath, even though she
:12:29. > :12:30.
:12:30. > :12:35.hadn't had any alcohol. That came back negative. A neighbour seems to
:12:35. > :12:40.know what is going on. I spoke to him, I have said to them the police
:12:40. > :12:44.will be here, they were going to try to get here while you are there.
:12:44. > :12:51.While Shona is waiting for the cyclist, something else has caught
:12:51. > :12:56.her eye, or rather her ear. I heard somebody riding their clutch, and
:12:56. > :12:59.it sounded awful. A passerby is blowing the whistle on the car and
:12:59. > :13:03.the occupants. Can I report something. The people who have gone
:13:03. > :13:07.up there in the Redcar, they are all businessed. They might kill
:13:07. > :13:13.someone. They have just gone up there.
:13:13. > :13:16.Can you have a wander down and see the index number. As the community
:13:16. > :13:21.support officer checks up on the road as it goes past. A young man
:13:21. > :13:25.turns up looking for his pushbike. He came back with a lovely white T-
:13:25. > :13:29.shirt and he looked fine, didn't look like he was hit by the car.
:13:29. > :13:35.Apart from a graze on the side of his fashion he's in better shape
:13:35. > :13:38.than the car driver. It's all right now, I'm fine. I will get your
:13:38. > :13:44.details, I have to record it as an injury accident, that will be how
:13:44. > :13:51.it will be dealt with. It was my fault. You can sign the paperwork
:13:51. > :13:58.to see that. Do you want the ambulance. The PCSO has found the
:13:58. > :14:05.car with the dodgy clutch. Can you wait here for two minutes. I have
:14:05. > :14:09.to go and check something. She's in need of urgent help outside the sal
:14:09. > :14:18.racial army. Just as the PCSO had gone to the top of the road the car
:14:18. > :14:23.had parked up, I heard her say I need more units.
:14:23. > :14:27.The registration is coming back as stolen. Oh for heaven's sake, can
:14:27. > :14:32.you get it there. Shona has a reputation for being a woman who
:14:32. > :14:36.loves to get stuck in. Even she knows when some situations can be a
:14:36. > :14:39.little risky. I felt it had potential to escalate into
:14:39. > :14:44.something that could have become intimidating, which is why I asked
:14:44. > :14:48.for more unit, there is no, as me being single crewed, I could have
:14:49. > :14:55.dealt with four very drunk people. Let me just have chat i need your
:14:55. > :14:59.name, my lovely. Yeah, yeah, yeah, just come over
:14:59. > :15:04.here. Shona is also known for her composure. You can't grab hold of
:15:04. > :15:09.all four of them and say you are all under arrest. I have played it
:15:09. > :15:18.down, and sort of come across as being really friendly, got the
:15:18. > :15:22.driver over, spoke to him. What is your name? I wasn't driving the car.
:15:22. > :15:32.Any way. I can't drive. Not a problem. I still need to know what
:15:32. > :15:32.
:15:32. > :15:38.your name is. Simon Ellerington. tried to distance himself from
:15:38. > :15:42.anything to do with the car. car has come back as stolen, and
:15:42. > :15:48.Shona is pretty sure the driver is over the limit as well. It is
:15:48. > :15:53.crucial no-one disappears. Has one of you got any tube, one of
:15:53. > :15:59.high tueings are up in the traffic car. You have seen him driving the
:15:59. > :16:06.motor vehicle. I saw him get out of the driver's side. I saw him as he
:16:06. > :16:10.went outside. Can you hold on to that for me. As
:16:10. > :16:16.long as they believed it was just him in trouble and they were all OK.
:16:16. > :16:20.They seemed quite happy to hang around. All four are coming in.
:16:20. > :16:25.we getting nicked, for sitting at the back of a scene, that is stupid.
:16:25. > :16:28.I'm not even drunk. Simon can I have a word with you over here for
:16:28. > :16:34.a minute. It is his car, not our car.
:16:34. > :16:38.Simon, listen to me, when you went past the traffic car, and the
:16:39. > :16:43.accident that was down the road, I saw you driving that motor vehicle,
:16:43. > :16:47.and the reason that draw my attention to you, to know you were
:16:47. > :16:52.in had the driver's seat of the vehicle, is because you were riding
:16:52. > :16:58.the clutch. Blowing under will be his only hope of salvation? Right,
:16:58. > :17:02.OK. Over? My road side device has shown you have blown me 102 which
:17:02. > :17:09.is a lot of alcohol. That is your's. It is nearly three times the legal
:17:09. > :17:13.limit, the man is going to be arrested. I don't do handcuffing
:17:13. > :17:17.like. That you are under arrest for suspicion of driving a motor
:17:17. > :17:22.vehicle over the subscribed limit, on top of that on suspicion of left
:17:22. > :17:27.of a motor vehicle. What do you mean of theft? You do not have to
:17:28. > :17:35.say anything, it may harm your defence. Drinking and theft of a
:17:35. > :17:39.motor vehicle. Come over here, does anybody else
:17:39. > :17:45.want an arrest. How can you say I was driving. You are under
:17:45. > :17:49.suspicion of being carried in a stolen vehicle. How could you say
:17:49. > :17:54.that was stolen. Anything you do say may be given in evidence.
:17:54. > :18:01.is that a stolen motor vehicle. is 102 as well.
:18:01. > :18:07.Any more spare cuffs on them, please? All four were arrested.
:18:07. > :18:13.Check my boobs if you want. She was very drunk, very loud, rude. She's
:18:14. > :18:19.in a stolen car, the person who is driving it is her boyfriend, he's
:18:20. > :18:26.three-times over the limit. If he hit a car and she died, the closest
:18:26. > :18:32.place would be the mortuary. Back down the road at the scene of the
:18:32. > :18:41.cycle accident, Shona's colleague, PC Baroness Bakewell is picking up
:18:41. > :18:44.the pieces. Look at the dent. blue van came down the road, and I
:18:44. > :18:49.understated it. With Shona, guarantee it will happen to her,
:18:50. > :18:54.she goes out of the station and then stolen car and drink drivers
:18:55. > :18:59.and an accident. It is just a case here of making sure everybody's
:18:59. > :19:04.details are exchanged. It is not down to me, and it is down to the
:19:04. > :19:12.insurance. I underestimated it, I was coming down there, I chanced it,
:19:12. > :19:18.I chance my whole life. I just remember him hitting the car, and
:19:18. > :19:24.then she went over the bonnet. the end of the day metal gets fixed,
:19:24. > :19:29.people don't always. Both people came out of it fine.
:19:29. > :19:32.Watch your language. Listen to me, using language like that is a
:19:32. > :19:37.public order offence, you are already in enough trouble. Why I
:19:37. > :19:42.haven't done nothing wrong. Don't start digging yourself a whole.
:19:42. > :19:46.They are all arrested because they are in car reported as being stolen.
:19:46. > :19:52.Because we didn't know when the vehicle was stolen, we certainly
:19:52. > :19:56.didn't know if they were involved in the theft sem selves any way.
:19:56. > :20:06.Theft themselves any way. # I got locked up
:20:06. > :20:13.# They won't let me out Can you just sit back, please.
:20:13. > :20:19.Thank you. I am. I was in the back of a car, and yes,
:20:19. > :20:23.I'm getting this for what. Where are we going? We are going to
:20:23. > :20:28.Bedford Police Station where you will be transported for Dunstable.
:20:28. > :20:34.How do I get back from there? you have shoes on? Then you can
:20:34. > :20:39.walk. When one thing leads to another, it
:20:40. > :20:45.is not always by accident, it is sometimes by design.
:20:45. > :20:49.When the traffic cops break down on motorists breaking the Highway Code,
:20:49. > :20:53.it is not always just about road safety. A lot of the time smaller
:20:53. > :20:57.things do lead to bigger things. A lot of the time people haven't got
:20:57. > :21:04.respect. The worst possible place to show disrespect for the law, is
:21:04. > :21:08.when there is a cop car right on your tail. No seatbelt. Beautiful,
:21:08. > :21:12.first one of the evening. driver didn't have a seatbelt, we

:21:17. > :21:22.Hello there. Any reason why we have followed you into the car park.
:21:22. > :21:27.Seatbelt? Where was it? I didn't have it on. No you didn't. Why not?
:21:27. > :21:31.I don't know, sorry. A lot of people what's a seatbelt, it is not
:21:31. > :21:35.a problem. If that person wants to die without a seatbelt that is not
:21:35. > :21:38.a problem. That is not the case. Not having a seatbelt can kill a
:21:38. > :21:42.lot of people. There is a lot of implications from not wearing it, I
:21:42. > :21:48.take it very seriously. Sit in the car for a few minutes and we will
:21:48. > :21:52.sort it out for you. The reason we pulled you over with
:21:52. > :21:57.regards to the seatbelt a lot of people are dying, injured because
:21:57. > :22:02.they are not wearing suit belts. Seemed an ordinary, average lady,
:22:02. > :22:09.going to collect a curry. Some people choose not to wear it, some
:22:09. > :22:18.people genuinely forget. I always put my seatbelt on. The one time
:22:18. > :22:22.you don't. I don't think she knew knew why she didn't wear it. Have
:22:22. > :22:27.you any points on your license? got done for drink-driving.
:22:27. > :22:31.have had no alcohol today have you? I don't think she knew about the

:22:54. > :23:00.Please be honest with me. How much have you had to drink today? I just
:23:00. > :23:08.had a half a lager. Straight away it sets alarm bells ringing, whilst
:23:08. > :23:13.she was in the car the car started to smell like a brewery. Lips round
:23:13. > :23:16.the tube, long continual breath, blow, blow, no, you're sucking in,
:23:16. > :23:22.keep blowing, keep blowing, stop there, that is good. Her reading

:24:08. > :24:10.get sorted out. Vivien, although I appreciate you are upset, I am

:24:23. > :24:33.have had my license for 25 years before getting done before, not one

:24:45. > :24:49.right. Thinking doesn't do it. don't know that, do I. The easy
:24:49. > :24:55.answer is don't get in car, if you have drunk alcohol. I'm not drunk,

:29:24. > :29:27.Vivien hasn't learned from being drinking and driving before.
:29:27. > :29:33.could have blown under, and could have walked out. But she played the
:29:33. > :29:38.system, she tried to stall for time, and she tried to cheat the device

:29:54. > :29:59.When they can, Bedfordshire's traffic cops like to take out the

:30:06. > :30:11.nice and clean and shiny. Whenever we have the opportunity I quite
:30:11. > :30:16.like going out in the plain car. You see a lot more. I'm not saying
:30:16. > :30:20.we like to speak up on people all the time. But people see a marked
:30:20. > :30:24.police car from a distance, whatever they are doing they will
:30:24. > :30:29.put their belt on or mobile phone down, in this you can do a bit of

:30:48. > :30:49.
:30:49. > :30:57.give it a quick wash. One of the things the traffic cops

:31:01. > :31:05.Catching speeders when virtually invisible is like shooting fish in

:31:21. > :31:30.fishing. I joined the police - investigate tra, and is going fish
:31:30. > :31:33.- Vectra, and is going fishing. I joined in 1974. Keith is the oldest

:31:37. > :31:43.nothing phases him. He joins traffic a month before I was born.
:31:43. > :31:47.I take delight in telling him that whenever I can. One of their
:31:47. > :31:51.favourite places to snare speeding motorists is the Barton Cutting. It
:31:51. > :31:58.is the one mile stretch of the Luton to Carlyle A6, where some
:31:58. > :32:01.people really like to put their foot down. We have used unmarked
:32:02. > :32:05.cars for checking speed for years, ever since I have been on there
:32:05. > :32:12.they have had unmarked cars. Speed guns have been around just as well.

:32:38. > :32:43.going to cause accidents and seriously exceeding the speed limit
:32:43. > :32:48.we are after. After a slow start, and a few tiddleers, they have a

:32:52. > :32:57.could hear it, it was going so quickly, I couldn't get a lock on
:32:57. > :33:01.him with the speed gun. What are you playing at. As he went past us,
:33:01. > :33:05.I turned to face the direction that he had driven towards, and was able

:33:13. > :33:19.was doing a speed of 116mph. 116. You won't see it again. Rather than
:33:19. > :33:23.sending a speeding summons in the post, like fixed cameras, when they
:33:23. > :33:27.use the laser the cops prefer to hand them over personally. That
:33:27. > :33:32.means some expert rapid catching up is required. Some say his name is
:33:32. > :33:36.Keith, some say it is really something else! A very, very fast,

:34:09. > :34:11.
:34:11. > :34:19.Stig is in his element. Someone didn't make it!
:34:19. > :34:24.We were probably quarter of a mile to half a mile behind him. It is
:34:24. > :34:27.only because of Keith's expert driving, his local knowledge, and
:34:27. > :34:33.perhaps he didn't have the same motivation that we have got, that

:34:57. > :35:00.evening. Out you get. When he saw us loom up behind him in a plain

:35:10. > :35:13.
:35:13. > :35:18.surprised to see us. Jump in and we shall explain all.
:35:18. > :35:23.Hello. Hello. Why do you think we have stopped you? I was going too
:35:23. > :35:27.fast. You certainly were. Before I talk to you about that, I have to
:35:27. > :35:33.caution you. He didn't seem too bothered at first. What's the speed
:35:33. > :35:41.limit on the dual carriageway? 70mph. What sort of speed do you
:35:41. > :35:45.think you were doing? Quite fast. Give us a guess. About 100. As you
:35:45. > :35:52.passed us, you were doing well in excess of 100, I measured your
:35:52. > :36:02.speed. If I turn up the display at 116mph, that is as you were driving
:36:02. > :36:02.
:36:02. > :36:05.away from us, at a distance of 259ms. It is then taking us a good
:36:05. > :36:10.ten minutes to catch you, you have had your foot to the floor all the

:36:28. > :36:34.been driving it like such an idiot. The customer's car has been in for
:36:34. > :36:37.a quick service and a quicker return. You are so far above the
:36:37. > :36:42.threshold I can't deal with you by means of fixed penalty. Normally I
:36:42. > :36:46.would write you a ticket and you get three points and a 60 fine. I
:36:46. > :36:50.can't do that because of the speed you were going at. You are going to
:36:50. > :36:55.be reported to court. I just need to take a few more details. Any
:36:55. > :36:59.particular reason you were going that fast? Like I say I just
:36:59. > :37:04.finished work, it was my own fault, I just wanted to get home. It is no
:37:04. > :37:08.excuse, I know. Getting home is no reason for going flat out, through
:37:08. > :37:11.country roads. You were certainly well within the realms of a
:37:11. > :37:21.disqualification. Lose my job then I suppose. It was your foot to the
:37:21. > :37:22.
:37:22. > :37:27.floor, wasn't it. I know, it wasn't you guy's fault. Thank you. Keep it
:37:27. > :37:31.down. If he didn't have his foot to the floor, he wouldn't have got in
:37:31. > :37:34.that situation. He might be looking at a disqualification, I wasn't
:37:34. > :37:39.forcing him, he has no-one to blame but himself. It will probably need
:37:39. > :37:44.another service now. Most customers wouldn't be too impressed to know
:37:44. > :37:48.their car was flying back to them. Speed kills, we're always told. But
:37:48. > :37:54.the truth is, accidents are far more likely to be the result of
:37:54. > :37:58.poor driving standards. PC Tanveer Hussein, is, as always, on the look
:37:58. > :38:02.out for drivers that are a menace on the road. Like the car coming up
:38:02. > :38:08.to the roundabout in front of the blue car ahead. He's driving with
:38:08. > :38:12.no lights on, as he went round the roundabout, I think he has managed
:38:12. > :38:15.to put them on, it looks like he has just started up, let's have a
:38:15. > :38:23.chat with the driver and see where he has come from and where he's
:38:23. > :38:28.going. Do all the checks and make sure his
:38:28. > :38:31.documents are in order. Parking like that begs the question, what
:38:31. > :38:36.on earth? To be honest I was thinking drink driver, the vehicle
:38:36. > :38:41.and the driver decided to stop in the middle of the road. The driver,
:38:41. > :38:46.is, in fact a woman. Can you park up on the left somewhere more
:38:46. > :38:50.suitable, this is not OK at all. There were cars behind me and

:42:37. > :42:47.if you give me my respect. She knew she was in trouble, and it was a
:42:47. > :42:48.
:42:48. > :42:55.matter of let's hide this from him. As the recovery truck arrives, so
:42:55. > :42:59.has the women's husband. And it's his car. Has she explained to you
:42:59. > :43:04.what happens. I want to take my car, you don't need to take it away.
:43:04. > :43:11.Because she's on her own, she has a provisional license, No Full
:43:11. > :43:15.license, no "L" plates, the reason the vehicle is being seized, that
:43:15. > :43:20.is why it is being taken. I expected a disagreement about why I
:43:20. > :43:25.have seized the car, it happens all the time. I have come to collect
:43:25. > :43:32.the car. I know the policy. Do you know it better than me. I don't
:43:32. > :43:37.know it better than you. She's at home because I'm at home with a few
:43:37. > :43:40.friends, I'm not in any way arguing. The moment I speak to control and
:43:40. > :43:44.say I need the vehicle recovered, that is it, there is normally no
:43:44. > :43:53.turning back, for me, that is job done. The man will have to visit
:43:53. > :43:58.the pound now to get his car back. There is never a dull moment for
:43:58. > :44:01.Andy and Keith in their unmarked Vauxhall Vectra, a van being stolen
:44:01. > :44:05.is being chased and heading in their direction.
:44:05. > :44:09.An armed response vehicle called up on the radio saying that they were
:44:09. > :44:17.behind a vehicle, that vehicle was failing to stop for them. I have a
:44:17. > :44:20.feeling he will come out here, keep going. The Stig has taken a back
:44:20. > :44:23.seat now. It is daunting knowing that someone of that experience is
:44:24. > :44:27.sat next to you, you just want to impress him, and him to think you
:44:27. > :44:32.are a good driver. The plan is to take out the stolen car's tyres
:44:32. > :44:37.with a stinger. We were able to park up and Keith ran to the boot
:44:37. > :44:43.to get the stinger out. But they are a fraction of a second too late.
:44:43. > :44:50.He has literally got it in his hands as we watched the stolen car
:44:50. > :44:56.flash past u closely followed by the armed response guys. Sorry mate.
:44:56. > :45:01.They have had a stroke of luck, the car has gone down to a roundabout
:45:01. > :45:08.and come back their way. I have stopped, turned round and got
:45:08. > :45:12.behind the stolen car. 150, he's coming back, if you are at the
:45:12. > :45:18.roundabout. 150 is the call sign for Craig and
:45:18. > :45:22.Sam, they are up ahead and about to join the fray. Only pursuit-trained
:45:22. > :45:27.traffic cops are allowed to tackle high-speed pursuit, they need to
:45:27. > :45:31.overtake the armed response officers. Ask LRV to let us through.
:45:32. > :45:39.They have quickly caught up with the train of vehicles. Ask them to
:45:39. > :45:46.let us through. 850 the foxtrot unit, can you let
:45:46. > :45:52.us past. The car thief thinks he can escape on the mortarway. We had
:45:52. > :45:56.the sense it could turn into something. Because the potential
:45:56. > :46:00.for danger is so much more on the motorway because of the speed of
:46:00. > :46:04.the vehicles. The helicopter is called, the crew specialises in
:46:04. > :46:10.helping traffic cops. It can get to most places within minutes of lift-
:46:10. > :46:18.off. It is gone midnight and fortunately
:46:18. > :46:23.traffic is light on the motorway, that is not much consolation for
:46:23. > :46:25.Sam. It is not much fun being the passenger, you can see what is
:46:25. > :46:28.going on, you have the helicopter that takes over the commentary, you
:46:28. > :46:32.are completely out of control, there is nothing you can do.
:46:32. > :46:38.have the visual. The helicopter crew have had no
:46:38. > :46:41.trouble picking up the pursuit. Chiefly because of their thermal-
:46:41. > :46:46.images camera. I have two traffic unites in pursuit at the moment.
:46:46. > :46:51.Coming up to junction 11 at this time. Things are hotting up. Keith
:46:51. > :46:58.and Andy in the unmarked car are still right on the car thief's tail
:46:58. > :47:02.and he's trying desperately to shake them off. He's weaving across
:47:02. > :47:09.all three lanes, no regard for other people's safety. The longer
:47:09. > :47:12.it drags on the more risk of something gone wrong at the end of
:47:12. > :47:22.it. Ask Keith if they want to let us through. There is an exit coming
:47:22. > :47:22.
:47:23. > :47:27.up, he's gone for it. It was tight enough to make Keith
:47:27. > :47:31.cringe. That's got to be pretty tight, not a lot phases Keith. You
:47:31. > :47:36.knew it was very tight. I think there was probably a fag paper
:47:37. > :47:41.between my front bumper and the cones that were leading up to the
:47:41. > :47:47.offslip, and I think there was probably slightly less room between
:47:47. > :47:52.me and the white van. If white van man is watching, sorry.
:47:52. > :47:56.From above the car thief's last- minute manoeuvre and Andy and
:47:56. > :48:01.Keith's close shave can be seen as they take the exit. You knew at the
:48:01. > :48:06.time I made the wrong choice, Keith can say 1,000 words with one raised
:48:06. > :48:16.eyebrow. The stolen vehicle is heading into Luton, and potential
:48:16. > :48:16.
:48:16. > :48:22.danger. It is already, Sam. drive is so desperate to get away
:48:22. > :48:28.he's speeding up a oneway street, the wrong way. The vehicle is wrong
:48:28. > :48:33.way, wrong way, he's still on Dunstable Road.
:48:33. > :48:40.Very busy high street, forcing other cars out of its way, it is
:48:40. > :48:46.then go gone pretty much flat out over some speed bumps, we could see
:48:46. > :48:50.the sparks as it hit the floor. driver is putting lives at risk,
:48:50. > :48:56.and the wrong way up a dual carriageway.
:48:56. > :49:02.At these speeds and with the driver so recognise le, the chances of an
:49:02. > :49:06.accident are e- reckless, the chances of an accident are enormous.
:49:07. > :49:12.They are seriously considering calling off the pursuit. I'm not
:49:12. > :49:15.going down a dual carriageway the wrong way for anybody. You have to
:49:15. > :49:20.be careful not to go into an area of red mist. If that guy gets away,
:49:20. > :49:23.he gets away. You could see as we were going on the other side of the
:49:23. > :49:27.dual carriageway, I was sweating, coming towards him was two lines of
:49:27. > :49:31.traffic, he had nowhere to go, it was lucky he turned off before
:49:31. > :49:41.having a head-on with one of the vehicles. Losing the traffic cars
:49:41. > :49:43.
:49:43. > :49:50.is one thing, getting rid of the eye in the sky quite another.
:49:50. > :49:56.Exchange Road. Target vehicle is stop, stop, stop. The man is out
:49:56. > :50:01.and running for his life. To succeed he will have to out run the
:50:01. > :50:06.cops and hide from the chopper's camera.
:50:06. > :50:11.Exchange Road. Andy and Keith have lost ground, because of the dual
:50:11. > :50:21.carriageway they have had to go the long way round. I saw his car close
:50:21. > :50:22.
:50:22. > :50:29.up against symbol lards in an alleyway a his - some bolards in an
:50:29. > :50:34.alley way and he's gone. Keith had seen him going up and over the wall,
:50:34. > :50:40.and all credit to him, Keith was up and over it. No-one gets away from
:50:40. > :50:43.The Stig. Craig and Sam are close behind.
:50:43. > :50:47.There was confusion, because one minute he was running in front of
:50:47. > :50:53.us, the next minute he has vanished. But he hasn't lost the choppers.
:50:53. > :50:58.He's on the other side of the wall you are running across, he's on the
:50:58. > :51:04.left, running parallel to you know. Once it is focused on you, you have
:51:04. > :51:08.to be very lucky to get away from it. Very lucky.
:51:08. > :51:14.All of a sudden there is a problem. Andy's realise the missing man
:51:14. > :51:18.could be heading straight back to the car he stole. I went back to
:51:18. > :51:21.secure the car, and make sure no- one nicked our one.
:51:21. > :51:29.The cavalry has arrived, it really will take something extraordinary
:51:29. > :51:39.for the car thief to escape now. But it looks like he is trying
:51:39. > :51:40.
:51:40. > :51:45.something extraordinary. He's breaking into a house, standby.
:51:45. > :51:48.Just getting told into it on the radio, we don't know is he breaking
:51:48. > :51:53.into the house, or does he live there. On the ground there is
:51:53. > :51:58.confusion over which house he's in. Has anyone come in the front of
:51:58. > :52:07.your house. Do you know what, to be honest I just thought I heard the
:52:07. > :52:13.front door slam. Can we come in. The helicopter catches him going
:52:13. > :52:20.into a house, but doesn't see him come out the back. Are you still in
:52:20. > :52:30.the premises, you have to do a fuller search of the house. Is it
:52:30. > :52:32.
:52:32. > :52:37.this one. He hasn't coming, he hasn't come out. It is getting on
:52:37. > :52:42.1.00am, and the whole neighbourhood is woken up. It is not for nothing,
:52:42. > :52:46.the car thief has been caught at last, not in the house but in the
:52:46. > :52:52.garden nearby. While the helicopter may have lost sight of the fugutive
:52:52. > :52:56.a wide awake neighbour hasn't, she found him hiding in her shed.
:52:56. > :52:59.The time he went into the house, he has gone straight through and out.
:52:59. > :53:08.Which the helicopter initially missed. The man's been caught and
:53:08. > :53:16.cuffed. Even so, he still wants to fight the law. Shut up. Collapse
:53:16. > :53:21.then and we will drag you. Police assault.
:53:21. > :53:25.Just take me like normal, it's normal isn't it. There is some
:53:25. > :53:35.height distance between me and Craig, it was probably a little
:53:35. > :53:41.
:53:41. > :53:49.uncomfortable for him. Get in and shut up.
:53:49. > :53:53.Just get in there, fella. You can see that, it is just
:53:53. > :54:00.ridiculous, his driving there, you can't follow him, I'm not going
:54:00. > :54:05.down a dual carriageway, public safety is paramount. Talk to us now.
:54:05. > :54:12.Get the BEEP off me. Is that your first or last name? BEEP you, you
:54:12. > :54:17.wanted to drag me like a dog, when I spoke to you. How did he get in
:54:18. > :54:22.there. I dropped down 20 foot of wall following him. Proving he's
:54:23. > :54:26.still nimble, Keith had his own little adventure in the lady's back
:54:26. > :54:33.garden. I ran round to the back where he was, the helicopter said
:54:33. > :54:35.he had gone over the wall. I looked over the wall, and there is about a
:54:35. > :54:40.12-foot drop, I lowered myself slowly over the wall and dropped
:54:40. > :54:46.down. When I was in the premises, whatever it was, I then couldn't
:54:46. > :54:50.get out the fence, it was mostly like sharp rotating blades on the
:54:50. > :54:55.top of it, and eventually I had to take my jacket off, put it over the
:54:55. > :55:00.top of one of the fences and climb out that way. He caught his arm on
:55:00. > :55:04.the top of the wall, shrugged it off and took it all in his stride.
:55:04. > :55:10.A check in the stolen car has uncovered something interesting.
:55:10. > :55:19.There was some silver foil, and there was a bread knife in there as
:55:19. > :55:22.well. He hasn't got that to carve his bread up, has he. Tin foil is
:55:23. > :55:27.generally a sign of someone who lives on drugs. Unless it was the
:55:27. > :55:32.remains of his packed lunch. Can I get my jacket please now. Can you
:55:32. > :55:37.walk to the custody area. I just want my jacket. The aggressive car
:55:37. > :55:47.thief has been taken to the Police Station in Luton. Can I have my
:55:47. > :55:47.
:55:47. > :55:52.jacket now. No. Why. Because I said so. I'm in the custody suite now.
:55:52. > :56:00.He was disappointed and angry because he was caught. Stop
:56:00. > :56:04.touching my arms.Am I going to have a fightor do my BEEP nuts off.
:56:04. > :56:12.Don't start. When they were going through the booking in procedure
:56:12. > :56:22.and he gave his name. Something rang alarm bells with me. Cooke is
:56:22. > :56:22.
:56:22. > :56:29.someone Sam suspects might have given the police a slip after an
:56:29. > :56:32.altercation. I had to make a couple of frantic phone calls. Just by

:56:37. > :56:41.that I remembered his name, and he got arrested for those offences as
:56:41. > :56:46.well. Listen carefully. Ant nigh there is an outstanding incident
:56:46. > :56:51.happened in Bedford a couple of days ago, where I'm arresting you
:56:51. > :56:58.on causing ABH times two. It was pure chance that nobody was hurt

:57:10. > :57:16.at some stage his odds will end and he will hit something.
:57:16. > :57:21.It was more a long goodbye than the awe revoir for Anthony Cooke, when
