0:01:30 > 0:01:32'My name is Brogan McCay.'

0:01:32 > 0:01:35I'm ten years old, I dance for the McConomys, Derry,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38and I'm going to the Worlds for the very first time.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46My name is Julie O'Rourke. I'm ten years old. I live in New York and I dance for the Petri School.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52This year is my first time at the Worlds, and Brogan is my main competition there.

0:01:52 > 0:01:57I'm Irish, and I really didn't know this whole world existed.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01Nobody in my family's ever done Irish tap dancing - at least, as far as I know.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Maybe over in Ireland they did.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05- Leza's two nieces danced.- Yes.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09And I used to think, "Oh, these people are insane."

0:02:09 > 0:02:13They pay for flights to go to feises.

0:02:13 > 0:02:17And then the wigs and all this, and I'd say "Oh, no. Crazy.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20"If Brogan ever has a talent, I really hope it's not Irish dancing."

0:02:36 > 0:02:37Arms.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Sit down!

0:02:44 > 0:02:49You just give up so much. Like, you could be invited to a thousand parties and you can't go,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52and even, like, birthday parties for your family you have to give up.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55You wouldn't throw a strop over it.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58You wouldn't be like, "Oh, why do I never get to have some freedom?"

0:02:58 > 0:03:00It's not that. It's like you're dedi...

0:03:00 > 0:03:02when you walk in the doors to dancing,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04you're dedicating your time.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06And so are the dance teachers.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10Hundreds of people have said, "Where did this wee thing come out of?"

0:03:10 > 0:03:13I mean, she come out and you think you've seen the best.

0:03:13 > 0:03:14Watch this. This IS the best.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16INSTRUCTOR HUMS A BEAT

0:03:18 > 0:03:20And one, two, three, four, five.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23You didn't finish the five.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26I make a face when I'm dancing. I open my mouth.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29I go like that. Or something. I don't know.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32But when I'm dancing, Rosetta'll be all,

0:03:32 > 0:03:35"You look like an old-age pensioner!"

0:03:35 > 0:03:37So I'd just be like, "Oh, sorry."

0:03:37 > 0:03:39Well, it's just, you know, one, two, three.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43You thought wrong, then. Because what you thought wasn't going on one.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Well, it was just like...

0:03:45 > 0:03:48I'm dancing for my granny and my mum and daddy,

0:03:48 > 0:03:50because they put so much money into it.

0:03:50 > 0:03:51Like, it's unbelievable.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57My friends go, "Whoa, my mummy wouldn't let me do that."

0:03:57 > 0:04:00'We could be in a big house with so much furniture,

0:04:00 > 0:04:04'but they have dedicated their lives to my happiness.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06'I find it so, like, extraordinary.'

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Hi, Mummy.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12Any money that, you know, myself and Darren have,

0:04:12 > 0:04:14it's spent on Brogan and her Irish dancing.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17I haven't had a holiday since... What, 2004, did I say?

0:04:17 > 0:04:21When Brogan started dancing, that's the last holiday I had.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24My mummy says, "What's a talent wasted, like?"

0:04:24 > 0:04:27If you have a talent, like, show everybody.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49Brogan is very nice, even though she keeps beating me.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52I try to do as much as she does.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54I always look on YouTube to see how she's dancing

0:04:54 > 0:04:57and I always try to perfect it the way she does it.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00That's how I got like, my hop-overs

0:05:00 > 0:05:04and, like, my front clicks, because I found out how she does it.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10She has a tendency not to want to do things until she feels like

0:05:10 > 0:05:13she'll look good doing it, or competitive with the other girls.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16That was part of the thing we didn't realise about her.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35'She was extremely quiet in the beginning. So shy, so nervous.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39'So when Anne Lynn said they were going to a feis, her first dancing competition,'

0:05:39 > 0:05:44- you had said, "She's really never going to get up and do it."- "I don't know if she'll get on stage."

0:05:44 > 0:05:45So I went to the competition.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48They were coming out two at a time, and the next thing,

0:05:48 > 0:05:53Julia stepped forward and she just performed like no-one's business.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57- My mouth dropped and I called you in Ireland.- She called me in Ireland.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00- I was like, "Lisa, we've got a live one."- Got a live one!- Like, wow.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Hard, hard, hard, hard!

0:06:07 > 0:06:09Big ending, ladies. Pick it up!

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Eight seconds.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20Come on, eight seconds.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22Pick it up, pick it up, pick it up.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25'We're just doing it for some fun, it's a nice cultural thing to do.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29'But she kept progressing as time went on. Then I saw the wigs,

0:06:29 > 0:06:33the dresses, and it was... I was like, what's that all about?

0:06:33 > 0:06:39- She's like, "Oh, that's what they do."- They go to different states and they drive to...

0:06:39 > 0:06:43I'm like, "I'm not going to go to Connecticut. I'm going to go local."

0:06:43 > 0:06:45Connecticut seemed like a little much.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47It's too much for me. I'm like, "No."

0:06:47 > 0:06:50But you get drawn into it. She's doing well and you buy the dress.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54And you get the wig and you get the shoes and you go to Ireland.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57So we've gone to Scotland twice. It's crazy.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59- Ireland.- Ireland.- England.- Yeah.

0:07:29 > 0:07:30My name's Simona and I'm from London.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34I'll be competing in the age 19 to 21 category at the Worlds.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39My main competitors will be Suzanne from Glasgow

0:07:39 > 0:07:41and Claire Greaney from Galway.

0:07:43 > 0:07:48We've known Claire and Suzanne since Simona was six, cos we've always competed.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53I remember Simona when I was seven, at the All Scotlands.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57I didn't get the recall and she won it.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00And I remember thinking, "Look at this girl. She's unbelievable."

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Then Suzanne won the Worlds in Glasgow, our very first Worlds,

0:08:03 > 0:08:07and that's the first time I really took notice of her and thought, "Oh, my God!"

0:08:21 > 0:08:25So I suppose there's just been the three of us always in the top five.

0:08:25 > 0:08:30We've been taking it in turns - it started off with me, then Suzanne and then Claire.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46ANNOUNCER: We're going straight into the under 21 men's competition.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49My grandparents on both sides, they're all Italian,

0:08:49 > 0:08:50so I've got no Irish blood.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52That was really good.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55'I was really born into it.'

0:08:55 > 0:08:57I started dancing when I was three.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01And I'm 19 now, so 16 years.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04It doesn't feel like that long, though, at all.

0:09:27 > 0:09:33I'd meet Simona's mother and Suzanne's mother at the competitions

0:09:33 > 0:09:35and while we'd be all secretly hoping for our own,

0:09:35 > 0:09:38we wouldn't begrudge it to the others.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58I don't think it's any different to anything else.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02I think if you do sport, if you want to win you've got to be focused.

0:10:02 > 0:10:03It becomes your life.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06I mean, horse-riding people travel all over the country.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08It's the same with Irish dancing.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10It's just we wear wigs and funny dresses.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13ANNOUNCER: A big round of applause for the top three.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30I'm John and I'm ten and I've got five brothers

0:10:30 > 0:10:32and I'm the only one who dances.

0:10:32 > 0:10:36And this year, I'm going for the Worlds for my very first time.

0:10:36 > 0:10:41My stepbrother's called Lee, and my brothers are...

0:10:41 > 0:10:46The oldest is Dean, Ashley, and then it's me,

0:10:46 > 0:10:49and then it's Thomas and then it's James.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53I like dancing - ten out of ten.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55And...

0:10:55 > 0:11:00football about two out of ten.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07We're not Irish. You know, we don't know Irish dancing.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11And we went to a feis and we walked in and it was like...

0:11:11 > 0:11:15It was like a Shirley Temple convention, wasn't it?

0:11:15 > 0:11:19There was teenagers and youngsters and they'd got the wigs on

0:11:19 > 0:11:23and really brown legs. Really made-up faces, and then these wigs.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26And it was like... You just find yourself, like,

0:11:26 > 0:11:30staring at people for a very long time,

0:11:30 > 0:11:33thinking, "I'm glad I've got a boy."

0:11:37 > 0:11:38Watch out!

0:11:42 > 0:11:44Point, two, three, four.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46Squeeze and point, tense your legs.

0:11:46 > 0:11:52Point your toes at the back. Ellie, you're not pointing your toes at the back.

0:11:52 > 0:11:57There's quite a lot of people who tease me and call me names.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01But I just ignore them and walk away, cos they don't know what they're talking about.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04It's not as bad as it used to be. It used to be terrible.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07People would be... You know, John'd say, "He's called me gay,"

0:12:07 > 0:12:12or, you know, that lot. But we used to say, "Well, just take no notice. Just show them what you can do."

0:12:14 > 0:12:17As a parent, you want to go out there and say,

0:12:17 > 0:12:20"Don't call him gay. You know, Michael Flatley's not gay."

0:12:20 > 0:12:24But then you have to stop yourself, because, you know.

0:12:24 > 0:12:29That's Mandy. If I... I tend to go out there and throw a wobbly, so...

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Lift, lift, tuck your elbows in.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38Step, two, three, two, two, three, three, two, three and four.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40Up and jump, up, jump.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43'It's the rhythm, and the music.'

0:12:43 > 0:12:47And, er, the shoes. I like the shoes.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49One, two, three, four, tuck, kick, down.

0:12:49 > 0:12:53When he first learned sevens, one of the first things, he was up on his toes like this

0:12:53 > 0:12:55and I was like, "Oh, God, he's going to be good."

0:12:55 > 0:12:59Go, stretch and one-two, up, kick. That was grand, son.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02'If John was at class five times a week like his competition are,

0:13:02 > 0:13:05'then I'm sure he'd be pretty much unbeatable.'

0:13:05 > 0:13:08But, unfortunately, he's one of five, they're all playing football,

0:13:08 > 0:13:11going in different directions, and dancing's expensive.

0:13:12 > 0:13:17- MANDY:- My wages basically pay for John's dancing.

0:13:17 > 0:13:22I go away and freeze and everything on weekends with the TA.

0:13:22 > 0:13:23- Ugh!- And at the back of my mind...

0:13:23 > 0:13:27At the back of my mind I'm thinking, "This is for John."

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Upwards, down, upwards, down. Tense your body and kick, two-three,

0:13:30 > 0:13:32and up and one-two, straight.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Now right up. Push, kick down. That's better.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Upper back, upper stamp, three clicks.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40One, two, that's straight legs.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43Stretch, push, up, kick, down. Stand point, stand point.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Tense. Pull in here, five, six, seven.

0:13:46 > 0:13:51'When he hits it and when he's on form, you know, I think he's probably unbeatable.'

0:13:51 > 0:13:53And a one-two, stretch, two-three, push.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55Now really stretch it out. Out, out.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57Yeah, that was better.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01'I've been making silly mistakes and stopping.'

0:14:01 > 0:14:05But hopefully this year they will all go.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08He just tends to forget things and, you know,

0:14:08 > 0:14:10and do something silly, or, you know, or just stop

0:14:10 > 0:14:15eight bars before the end, and I'll say, "What were you thinking?" "I don't know. I forgot."

0:14:16 > 0:14:18Right, who's next? Mitch.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20- How are your blisters? - All right, yeah.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22- You still got your plasters on? - Yeah.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26It is frustrating, cos he could be so good.

0:14:26 > 0:14:31I think he's got the potential to win Worlds, definitely. He's a completely different dancer to Joe.

0:14:31 > 0:14:36He has to have something for a long time, and when it's polished

0:14:36 > 0:14:39and he knows it and it's drilled right, it looks great.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42But, you know, then he might forget it anyway.

0:14:42 > 0:14:47But whereas Joe, even on his worst day, will never forget it and he'll never, ever stop.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53'I'd like to dance like Joe Bitter.'

0:14:53 > 0:14:54He's strong...

0:14:55 > 0:14:58..he's confident and...

0:15:01 > 0:15:03..I just love the way he dances.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08Stretch it out, and three, four, up and down and stretch.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10Push up, and down. Pull the back leg up, shoulders back.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14Stretch, stretch, two, three, four, up and down.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17Dance down, one, two, three, four, up and down. Stretch.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20Push up and down. Pull that back leg up and stretch.

0:15:20 > 0:15:25Stretch, two, three, four, up and down, push, cross, cross, cross.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29Arms back. Arms, two, three, four and one, two, stretch. Push up.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33Stand point, point, stretch those legs out, beat, beat, beat.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36Kicking, one, two, stretch, four, up. Shoulders, John.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39Up. Up. Kicking down and stop there. Great.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41'John's my best dance teacher ever.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45'He's really good at dancing, as well.'

0:15:45 > 0:15:48And he shouts...

0:15:49 > 0:15:52..not a lot, but...

0:15:52 > 0:15:55he shouts. But not loud.

0:15:55 > 0:15:56Not that loud.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00Keep feet turned down, toes pointed, your heels will automatically hit.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03That's better. But now let's do it without the dodgy head.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06Two, three, go. Treble up and toe, hop and step, kick, kick and down.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09You know, I am quite hard on him. But he can take it.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13You know, he never cracks. He's very... "OK".

0:16:13 > 0:16:16You're getting strong on knee, toe and back. Treble and backstep,

0:16:16 > 0:16:18showing me the inside of your ankle all the time. OK?

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Arms tight. Five, six, seven, go.

0:16:20 > 0:16:24Treble and backstep... No, come on. That's your set dance. Concentrate!

0:16:24 > 0:16:26And treble and backstep, treble and cross, cross,

0:16:26 > 0:16:29heel and toe sharp. Two, three, treble and toe back,

0:16:29 > 0:16:32stretch it out, two, three, push, push it right up, now put it back.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Treble and toe, up and step, kick...

0:16:34 > 0:16:38If I don't come in the top ten,

0:16:38 > 0:16:41or a recall, or I won't...

0:16:43 > 0:16:45It'll be OK, but...

0:16:45 > 0:16:48it'll just show that I haven't danced my best.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Stretch your legs out, chin up.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53'Nowadays, because so many people want to win,

0:16:53 > 0:16:57'there's a lot of people that probably don't have a lot of natural talent,

0:16:57 > 0:16:59'but have just worked so damn hard at it

0:16:59 > 0:17:02'that they're actually winning because they're so technically correct.'

0:17:02 > 0:17:07'So people with natural talent now have to put the work in.'

0:17:08 > 0:17:10You know, there's no room for error now.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12You have to be foot perfect.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14Out...

0:17:14 > 0:17:15in...

0:17:15 > 0:17:16down.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19Right, left, right, right, out, in, down.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22'When I was growing up Riverdance and Lord of the Dance didn't exist.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24'So no-one really knew about it in England.'

0:17:24 > 0:17:29So yeah, I didn't really tell anybody at school that I did it.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32And then after I won the World Championships, I think,

0:17:32 > 0:17:36I was on the news, and then I went in school the next day

0:17:36 > 0:17:39and it was like, "I saw you on the news last night". And I was like, "Did you?"

0:17:39 > 0:17:43"I didn't know you did that dancing." I was like, "Oh, yeah."

0:17:43 > 0:17:45I don't really talk about Irish dancing,

0:17:45 > 0:17:49outside Irish dancing, like my mates from Irish dancing.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53It's just normally like football and American football.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56Work on your arms. Yes.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58Of course. OK. Off you go.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06Cross, over, over, over, over. Bring your arms back.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Don't overstrain yourself.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10Cross, cross, cross.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14The back foot out more, out more.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16Bring this arm in tighter.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19Cross. Treble up and treble.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22Go for the fast ones. Back foot.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24Left foot out.

0:18:28 > 0:18:29Knackered.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34He just has a complete understanding of every kind of rhythm that I throw at him.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37Even from a very, very young age I was always giving him stuff

0:18:37 > 0:18:40way harder than other people his age.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43One, two, three. Da da da.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46Cross, cross, cross. Da da da. That's better. Good.

0:18:48 > 0:18:49Do that bit again.

0:18:49 > 0:18:53Up, kick, kick and toe. Right up, right back.

0:18:53 > 0:18:58Joe's desire to pursue dance was phenomenal.

0:18:58 > 0:19:02It was living and breathing dance for him and I...

0:19:02 > 0:19:06It was like a snowball that I couldn't stop.

0:19:06 > 0:19:10Up. Kick, kick and toe. Kick, kick and toe.

0:19:10 > 0:19:12Cross, diddly dum dum.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14Yeah, that wasn't too bad, a little bit better.

0:19:14 > 0:19:18Up, kick, kick and toe, kick, kick, kick and treble, and back.

0:19:18 > 0:19:20That's better. Good. Much better.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23There was just that intensity about him.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26He'd spend seven hours in the living room with the carpets rolled up

0:19:26 > 0:19:31and the furniture moved, and that reel would play over and over.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38Kick, kick, kick and quiet.

0:19:38 > 0:19:42Da da da da da and sharp.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45When he started out, you know, he was like everybody else.

0:19:45 > 0:19:50Hop, two, three. But he won the first 17 events he entered.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53And he found out he was pretty good at this.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57We're a lot alike, Joe and I.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00So I think that it was a point in time when I realised

0:20:00 > 0:20:05I had to help him manage himself without being...

0:20:05 > 0:20:08I couldn't push him, let's put it that way.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12But in my own way, I orchestrated things, no doubt.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14I had heard rumours that this Californian boy

0:20:14 > 0:20:17was thinking about moving to England to dance

0:20:17 > 0:20:20and I just thought it was a little bit crazy and...

0:20:22 > 0:20:25But then...you know...

0:20:25 > 0:20:28dancing has grown so much that people take it so seriously -

0:20:28 > 0:20:30even though there's no money involved,

0:20:30 > 0:20:33it is quite prestigious and people want that world title.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38We are a little mad.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41So, you know, you hear about families who up and move to Florida

0:20:41 > 0:20:43when they have a good tennis player.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52I had a very successful medical practice.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54I pretty much gave that up.

0:20:54 > 0:21:01I lived in a wonderful neighbourhood of £5 million and £6 million houses.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05The weather here is certainly nothing compared to California.

0:21:05 > 0:21:10I know, yeah. It's always raining in this country, though. God.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16Five, six, seven, heads. Move, two, three, four, five...

0:21:16 > 0:21:21'When Joe first arrived from America, he was, maybe, spoilt.'

0:21:21 > 0:21:23And sharp, sharp, sharp, sharp.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25'He was this amazing talent from when he was young.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28'Everybody told him how amazing he was all the time,'

0:21:28 > 0:21:31and it was like, "You're brilliant". And he was very talented.

0:21:31 > 0:21:36'And then he came to our class and it was like, "This is wrong, you're not doing this."

0:21:36 > 0:21:40'It was a huge shock to his system, I don't think he liked it very much.'

0:21:40 > 0:21:41And catch, no, no, no, no.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44John Carey is just an amazing dancer

0:21:44 > 0:21:48and teacher, choreographer, you name it.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50I mean, he's won the Worlds eight times

0:21:50 > 0:21:54and he's an incredible inspiration.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56'I definitely have an ego in Irish dancing.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59'When you're at the top, it's hard not to.'

0:21:59 > 0:22:01When he tells me something, like,

0:22:01 > 0:22:05sometimes I'm a little iffy with my listening.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08It's interesting to see John and Joe dance together,

0:22:08 > 0:22:12because, you know, I see this look in Joe's eyes, like,

0:22:12 > 0:22:17"Yeah, I know, you're better than me. Give me time".

0:22:19 > 0:22:23'I just want to be one of the best that's ever danced.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24'As good as John Carey is.'

0:22:24 > 0:22:28I want to be known for doing the rhythm and having the set dance

0:22:28 > 0:22:33and people'll be like, "Joe Bitter, I remember him, he used to do those amazing set dances".

0:22:52 > 0:22:55I'm Ana. I'm Russian.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57I live in Moscow,

0:22:57 > 0:23:00and I'm a part of a ceilidh team of eight dancers.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04We are all adults.

0:23:04 > 0:23:09We started Irish dancing when we were in our 20s.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14You can practice a lot -

0:23:14 > 0:23:19for a week, for two weeks, for two months, for a year -

0:23:19 > 0:23:21and still you cannot do something.

0:23:23 > 0:23:28And then one day you just go to the class

0:23:28 > 0:23:31and you can do it, like magic.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34And it makes you so happy, so proud.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38"Wow, look here! Look, I can do it!"

0:23:41 > 0:23:44I'm based in Munich and then my weekends,

0:23:44 > 0:23:47I'm usually away teaching in Poland or Russia.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51Over the three countries we have 500 pupils.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54I've got three days of workshops

0:23:54 > 0:23:56with all the dancers in the ceilidh team.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59And we've got about 25 hours of classes lined up.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05Hopefully, we'll be able to get the last minute practice in before the Worlds.

0:24:09 > 0:24:15I think I probably spend about half of my salary Irish dancing,

0:24:15 > 0:24:20because we travel to many countries. It's very expensive.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24People keep asking us about Irish dancing, "Why?

0:24:24 > 0:24:27"You are Russians, you live in Moscow... Why?"

0:24:27 > 0:24:30And I don't know. Because I like it.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37It's a game for other people.

0:24:40 > 0:24:45You know, in Russia, the winter lasts about six, seven months.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49It could be rather depressing.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53When you come dancing, no matter what mood you are in,

0:24:53 > 0:24:55you're always leaving the class in high spirits.

0:24:57 > 0:25:02Only Irish dancing allows you to fly. Really, really to fly.

0:25:04 > 0:25:05Chin up, Katya.

0:25:11 > 0:25:16Shane is a wonderful dancer and brilliant teacher.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18Up a bit more, Sasha. Up, jump, two, three.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20Stop, stop, stop.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24SHE SPEAKS RUSSIAN

0:25:34 > 0:25:36Bom, bom, bom, bom, bom.

0:25:36 > 0:25:41'I would definitely think of the Russians as the hardest-working Irish dancers I've ever met.'

0:25:43 > 0:25:44You're not lifting up as high...

0:25:44 > 0:25:47'They love it. The really do love it. 'And they enjoy dancing it.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51'So we're really trying to brighten them up and make them show they enjoy it.'

0:25:51 > 0:25:56..And four, five. Vera, you look like you're having a terrible time.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59One, and two, drop three, round the feet, four.

0:26:04 > 0:26:09Even that time when I was watching, it was just Vera and Ana who held this all the way throughout.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11The rest of you were going through the motions.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13And we need eight of you to be doing that.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Cos it can't be just one or two in the team

0:26:15 > 0:26:18and the rest of you all just hanging on behind.

0:26:18 > 0:26:22I want people to look at you and go, "Wow, they know what they're doing".

0:26:22 > 0:26:24So I think, all the time when you're dancing,

0:26:24 > 0:26:26dance it like you are world champions.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Your hands are perfected, your feet are good.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32Now we need to work on the actual presentation of it.

0:26:32 > 0:26:36One, and two, and three, and four,

0:26:36 > 0:26:39and five and six. Katya, you look miserable.

0:26:39 > 0:26:43Chins up, wait, wait, wait. We've lost the personalities.

0:26:43 > 0:26:46Eight unhappy Russians.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49Imagine they're hot fingers, like you can't hold onto them for too long.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52Cos I saw a few times, you see, this sticky fingers.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55Hands. Hot fingers, like, "Ow!"

0:26:55 > 0:26:59You know, you can barely touch them. You touch them and you're gone.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02Go! Up, two, three. Move it, move it.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06One, two, three, four, five and go. Move, come on.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09Go. Go, go, go. Go.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12Move. Hot fingers.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15If you are not nervous,

0:27:15 > 0:27:19if you do no stupid mistake, if you look happy,

0:27:19 > 0:27:22I think we have a chance to get a recall.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54'Coming up for our major, I practice almost every day.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57'I like the privates the most

0:27:57 > 0:28:01'because you get to see what you do the best.

0:28:04 > 0:28:08'They always tell you specifically, they're always watching you.

0:28:10 > 0:28:14'At the private, my mom takes notes about what I have to fix.'

0:28:15 > 0:28:17Thank you.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22'She writes it down so she knows what to practice the next time.'

0:28:34 > 0:28:36Oh, no, I don't get privates.

0:28:36 > 0:28:38One, two, three.

0:28:38 > 0:28:39Cos we're so together,

0:28:39 > 0:28:42we're like one big family in a kind of way.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45'The reason we don't do private lessons

0:28:45 > 0:28:48'is because we've got 90% in our class who just couldn't afford it.'

0:28:52 > 0:28:55'It's not fair for any of the other children,

0:28:55 > 0:28:59'cos if I got private, like, my friends in my age group,'

0:28:59 > 0:29:02they wouldn't get it, so it's just not right. We don't do that.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04That's it. Yeah, other side.

0:29:09 > 0:29:10Good.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17If you do it wrong, you have to get it right.

0:29:17 > 0:29:18You can't just leave it.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22My mom, she's very strict about that.

0:29:22 > 0:29:23There you go.

0:29:27 > 0:29:31Hey, see the leaning on the shoulder? Just relax your shoulder.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33Push it back and relax it.

0:29:36 > 0:29:38She had been dancing on a broken foot.

0:29:38 > 0:29:42And the day that her mom said that they were going to the doctor,

0:29:42 > 0:29:44Julia was like, "Oh, it doesn't hurt so much."

0:29:44 > 0:29:48She realised we were leaving for Scotland and she didn't want to miss it.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50Straight. Good.

0:29:51 > 0:29:55One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine...

0:29:55 > 0:29:59'I remember when I hurt my foot before the All Scotland. I just moved on.'

0:29:59 > 0:30:00..18, 19, 20.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02My mum was like, "You can't dance",

0:30:02 > 0:30:05and I was like, "Aye, I can. I can. Watch me".

0:30:07 > 0:30:10'There's so many injuries coming up to the Worlds.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12'It's like, unbelievable.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18'My friend, she broke her leg a couple of days ago.'

0:30:18 > 0:30:21And you're like, "Whoa". But luckily she's not going to the Worlds

0:30:21 > 0:30:25cos she didn't qualify, but she broke her leg at dancing. You're like, "Whoa".

0:30:26 > 0:30:30When I hurt my foot, that was just the best time to strengthen it

0:30:30 > 0:30:34and to make it better and better for competitions.

0:30:34 > 0:30:36We want to work the muscles in the lower leg as well, OK?

0:30:36 > 0:30:39So the inside part of her arch...

0:30:39 > 0:30:42she uses one muscle called the posterior tib.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44The other muscle called the flexor hallucis longus.

0:30:44 > 0:30:47- Are you having any pain over this area?- No.

0:30:47 > 0:30:49OK. Let's drape one right here.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52If it gets too cold, you let me know.

0:30:52 > 0:30:57Nice and supple, there's no knots in them, so that's a good thing.

0:30:57 > 0:30:58Are you going to win?

0:30:58 > 0:31:00It's going to be a tough competition.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03OK. Well, you be confident and you have to have fun with it.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14I realised how good Julia was and I thought,

0:31:14 > 0:31:17"You know what, Brogan? You're not going to win this World easy".

0:31:17 > 0:31:20Do it again. Step it over. Step over.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22Over, step back and move.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25See that? Come on, execute, looking wider.

0:31:27 > 0:31:28That's it. Then go.

0:31:28 > 0:31:29Stay on the grey.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33'Dance classes, they've got tougher.

0:31:33 > 0:31:37'Rosetta's making us do like loads and loads of jumps,

0:31:37 > 0:31:39'like 2,000 and stuff.'

0:31:39 > 0:31:40Up, up, stand on your toes.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43Go right down... Right up.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46Up and step out, Gemma.

0:31:46 > 0:31:50'I have three sons, I have one daughter, and I wanted her to be a world champion.

0:31:50 > 0:31:54'I didn't care if she couldn't read or write. I know a lot of people will say

0:31:54 > 0:31:58that's ridiculous, her education's more important. But to me it wasn't.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00Irish dancing was the most important thing in my life.

0:32:00 > 0:32:05'You see her like tell you off, and you just want to work to make them happy again.'

0:32:05 > 0:32:08And you want to make them proud, because they work so hard,

0:32:08 > 0:32:09they take their time off.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11Dance on.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16You danced it that time. No, she danced it that time.

0:32:16 > 0:32:17Wasn't just her...

0:32:17 > 0:32:20Either do it right or don't do it at all.

0:32:20 > 0:32:23You looked as if you were going for a walk, the two of yous.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26You're not going to World dancing like that.

0:32:26 > 0:32:29Get it right or take it out completely.

0:32:36 > 0:32:40When Simona was tiny, it was her that wanted to do it.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42Now, I probably have to push her a little bit more

0:32:42 > 0:32:45because I think she's older and there's other interests.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48'I started getting fed up with it. I thought, what's the point?

0:32:48 > 0:32:51'Cos I really wanted to win a World.'

0:32:51 > 0:32:55And when you're not getting the results, it's really hard.

0:32:55 > 0:32:57She was thinking of knocking it on the head,

0:32:57 > 0:33:01but didn't want to cos of me. cos she knew it would upset me.

0:33:02 > 0:33:04That is way too big.

0:33:05 > 0:33:10I've remortgaged twice. Not just I suppose for the dancing,

0:33:10 > 0:33:13but most of the money that I earn does go on the dancing.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16It looks like it matches there, but when you look at it on that...

0:33:16 > 0:33:21'It's expensive. That's why I started making the costume, cos I couldn't afford to buy one.'

0:33:21 > 0:33:23It's way too big.

0:33:23 > 0:33:25I just checked.

0:33:25 > 0:33:27That is not the same as that.

0:33:27 > 0:33:28I just checked.

0:33:28 > 0:33:32'When people say, "Do you win anything?", you say, "No", and they go, "Why are you doing it?"

0:33:32 > 0:33:35It's not the money, you want to win the World.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38I mean, if you've done Irish dancing for all those years,

0:33:38 > 0:33:41the top prize that you can get is the World.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43And that's what the kids strive for.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49'I won the World Championships for the first time in 2002,

0:33:49 > 0:33:52'when it was the first year in Glasgow.

0:33:52 > 0:33:55'The next year I was second.

0:33:57 > 0:34:00'And the year after that, then I won three Worlds in a row.'

0:34:05 > 0:34:08Very well done. Lovely. Standing very well, Cathy. Lovely.

0:34:08 > 0:34:12We had a break in the summertime, the class was closed for a month

0:34:12 > 0:34:15and Suzanne and a couple of the other girls said

0:34:15 > 0:34:18they couldn't wait till next Sunday for the class to reopen.

0:34:18 > 0:34:19That's right.

0:34:19 > 0:34:24We were enjoying a month's holiday and they couldn't wait for the dancing to start again.

0:34:24 > 0:34:27In fact, Suzanne had an injury about four months ago.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30She was on crutches for a couple of weeks, but she came to every class.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32With her crutches, yeah. Just to watch.

0:34:32 > 0:34:37She was using her crutches to demonstrate wee bits of steps!

0:34:55 > 0:35:00You're doing the diddly-dums, your back foot could be more out.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02Yeah, thrust the heel forwards. Do that again.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07Really smell it off them.

0:35:07 > 0:35:09You can, yeah, yeah.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12It's in the legs. The beautiful legs. Legs are so important.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14I love legs. Legs are just that.

0:35:21 > 0:35:22You're rushing those toes a bit.

0:35:25 > 0:35:30Claire, I think, will find it hard to give up the dancing because she loves it so much.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33I do think that dancing will always be a part of her life.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36I don't think you'd last in this unless you love it.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41No matter where you go, you'll find yourself, this kind of thing.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43In mass it could be this way.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46You start thinking, I lie in bed, if I can't sleep I'll start making up steps.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50The duvet could be jumping up and down. That's the mental side of it.

0:35:50 > 0:35:53It is my life, it is my passion.

0:35:53 > 0:35:57I've sacrificed so much in my life to be an Irish dancer and to be where I am right now.

0:35:58 > 0:36:04Inside that skinny little body of hers, she has such determination.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06If you're at the top, the only place you can go is down.

0:36:06 > 0:36:10You don't want that to happen, so there's pressure to stay at the top.

0:36:21 > 0:36:23He just pulled out, did you to see that?

0:36:23 > 0:36:24I did. I'm glad you saw it.

0:36:24 > 0:36:26You're not turning here?

0:36:26 > 0:36:30- Yeah? Why? - I thought you were going straight. - Shall I go that way?

0:36:30 > 0:36:33I'd be happy if she goes to the World and dances really well.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35I know she's capable of winning it.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38But then that doesn't mean she will.

0:36:38 > 0:36:41Claire's going wanting to keep it, because she won it last year.

0:36:41 > 0:36:44Suzanne's going to go wanting to get it back and I haven't won it.

0:36:44 > 0:36:47So, I just really want to win one.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00I'm Sandun, I'm this Sri Lankan guy who lives in Holland

0:37:00 > 0:37:02and I'm an Irish dancer.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05They call me the Flying Dutchman and I want people to say this year,

0:37:05 > 0:37:08"the Flying Dutchman is in the top five of the world."

0:37:10 > 0:37:14When you go to Irish dance class or to a feis, you step into this other world.

0:37:14 > 0:37:15I really see it like that.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36The first time I looked at Irish dancing was Riverdance,

0:37:36 > 0:37:37and I didn't like it at all.

0:37:37 > 0:37:42Then I took home a video and he watched it three times a day, four times a day, five times.

0:37:42 > 0:37:44Like little kids watch cartoons, the Lion King.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47He watched Riverdance.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50It's like a drug. Irish dance is like a drug.

0:37:50 > 0:37:52Top sport is not good for your body.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54You get injuries everywhere.

0:37:54 > 0:37:57But at the same time it gives you this nice feeling.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06He's absolutely determined, if he wants to.

0:38:06 > 0:38:07He can also be a lazy bastard.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10I would be seeking thrills everywhere.

0:38:10 > 0:38:13I think I probably, you know, if someone will be like, "Hey,

0:38:13 > 0:38:17"take this joint," or, "Take this little pill," I'd do it.

0:38:17 > 0:38:21But now, I want to, you know, perform good

0:38:21 > 0:38:25and you can't do that with drugs or an over amount of alcohol.

0:38:32 > 0:38:35I know he's the only boy in the school.

0:38:35 > 0:38:39You have no-one else to compare yourself with during classes.

0:38:39 > 0:38:40You have to do it all by yourself.

0:38:42 > 0:38:50He's made his own mix, because he's cocky enough to think that he knows best for himself.

0:38:50 > 0:38:51- And really cocky! - Yeah.

0:38:52 > 0:38:57And what is very funny is Irish dancing is a girl's sport.

0:38:57 > 0:39:01More, it's a white girl's sport. You don't see coloured people in Irish dancing.

0:39:01 > 0:39:06I know there are thousands of people and I've seen five coloured people, something like that.

0:39:06 > 0:39:13And he feels perfectly comfortable because people accept him for what he does dancing,

0:39:13 > 0:39:16and not for who he is, coloured or non-coloured.

0:39:23 > 0:39:26Being adopted, for Sandun, it's very difficult.

0:39:26 > 0:39:33Because he grows up in a white environment, being a child of white parents

0:39:33 > 0:39:36and that's not how it should've been.

0:39:36 > 0:39:41He should've grown up in Sri Lanka with his own parents.

0:39:42 > 0:39:49Being given up by your own mum, that's not easy to cope with.

0:39:50 > 0:39:55We had really rough times when he was younger,

0:39:55 > 0:39:58that's why Irish dancing was very important to us.

0:40:00 > 0:40:04Something that made him feel very good by himself.

0:40:04 > 0:40:08Even in the rougher moments of our lives,

0:40:08 > 0:40:13we went to dance practice and it always made it right again.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18And that's been a difficult path.

0:40:18 > 0:40:20It's not been impossible, but...

0:40:23 > 0:40:24..Sandun has many interests,

0:40:24 > 0:40:30and now he's gone to puberty, and it's not helping to be...

0:40:30 > 0:40:35Yeah, he wants to go out and stay up late and drink.

0:40:35 > 0:40:42That's very normal for teenagers, but that doesn't combine very well with top sport.

0:40:44 > 0:40:48I don't want to be like, "Sandun came, he got 7th and that was it."

0:40:48 > 0:40:51No, I want to be like, "Sandun got 10th, then he got 7th,

0:40:51 > 0:40:53"he got top five, then he got top three."

0:40:53 > 0:40:54Then bam!

0:40:54 > 0:40:56Yeah, number one.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16I was born in Glasgow and it's funny for me to be here

0:41:16 > 0:41:19at the 40th World Championships and be hosting the event.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25There'll be somewhere just over 6,000 competitors.

0:41:29 > 0:41:33It brings in all through the week, 20, 30,000 people.

0:41:33 > 0:41:38And everything culminates here in three 35-second performances, if you're lucky.

0:41:38 > 0:41:41Some only get to perform twice at this event and you get called.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44Only 50 people get to do the last round.

0:41:44 > 0:41:49So, really, all these children are practicing all year round for six minutes of dancing.

0:42:02 > 0:42:06This morning he was up at half five

0:42:06 > 0:42:10and tomorrow he's bound to wake up as well early.

0:42:13 > 0:42:16He's got that excitement and nervousness all rolled into one.

0:42:18 > 0:42:20He's like a coiled spring.

0:42:32 > 0:42:36When we get to the hotel, are we going to practice a little?

0:42:36 > 0:42:39No practicing, no. Just do stretching, a little stretch.

0:42:39 > 0:42:40Yeah, that's what's I mean.

0:42:40 > 0:42:43- Yeah, no, no dancing. - A day off.- Yeah.

0:42:46 > 0:42:51Looks gorgeous. Really beautiful.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53Costumes cost 2,500 American dollars.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59- You have to see the hair band. - Oh, that's perfect.

0:42:59 > 0:43:02- You like it? - Yeah, that's perfect.

0:43:02 > 0:43:04'She got a new dress in July.'

0:43:04 > 0:43:08She's worn it four times maybe.

0:43:08 > 0:43:12No, more than that. At the little Feis, you mean.

0:43:12 > 0:43:16- With the white skirt. - Uh-huh. Four times?

0:43:16 > 0:43:19- Four times. - Yeah, you're kidding.

0:43:19 > 0:43:20Maybe five.

0:43:20 > 0:43:22OK, I don't know, I thought it was more than that.

0:43:22 > 0:43:23She grew.

0:43:23 > 0:43:26- It's beautiful.- It's gorgeous.

0:43:26 > 0:43:28See this white, like it's that really shiny.

0:43:28 > 0:43:31- Yeah, shiny, yeah. - It's almost like iridescent.

0:43:31 > 0:43:35- And you have socks that are diamante, right?- Yes. - Obviously. A silly question.

0:43:36 > 0:43:38Feel comfortable? All righty?

0:43:55 > 0:44:00This last year, Brogan hasn't had it easy because Mum passed away.

0:44:01 > 0:44:05Mum was diagnosed with cancer in June,

0:44:05 > 0:44:08so Brogan was finishing up school in the June.

0:44:08 > 0:44:11We moved more or less up to Sligo for that summer.

0:44:13 > 0:44:16My granny was just so, so ill. It was unbelievable.

0:44:16 > 0:44:20She was all like oxygen and everything, it was just so, so sad.

0:44:20 > 0:44:27But like every day, she would, like, be saying to me, "do your best."

0:44:27 > 0:44:29So, like, I'm...

0:44:29 > 0:44:31I know she would've just wanted me to do my best.

0:44:31 > 0:44:35So I just kept going to qualify for the World.

0:44:36 > 0:44:40The Ulsters was a big thing this year because this was her qualifier for the Worlds.

0:44:40 > 0:44:44For about the week before Mum died, we knew she was really, really sick.

0:44:44 > 0:44:47She was going, "Rosetta, I have to just qualify for the World

0:44:47 > 0:44:49"to go back and tell Granny so she can die."

0:44:52 > 0:44:56Brogan won and then I rang my sister in Sligo who was in the hospital with Mum.

0:44:56 > 0:45:00I said, "just whisper to her now that she's won and she's going through to the Worlds."

0:45:00 > 0:45:04And...I went back up home and that morning she died then.

0:45:04 > 0:45:10It was like she just wanted to find out did I qualify and then like rest.

0:45:12 > 0:45:16I was sad, but I was excited to hear that she found out.

0:45:16 > 0:45:23Everybody was like so upside down like and it was terrible, but we pulled through.

0:46:10 > 0:46:12Push those knees down flat.

0:46:12 > 0:46:16Stomach's should be flat down on your thighs. Push down.

0:47:04 > 0:47:05And relax your top half.

0:47:05 > 0:47:08You're dancing fabulous, I'm really, really happy.

0:47:27 > 0:47:30My dress is so special to me.

0:47:30 > 0:47:35My granny bought it for me and I say she's always dancing with me.

0:47:35 > 0:47:39She got me this dress and she's my wee guardian angel and all.

0:47:39 > 0:47:45It's not really about dresses but, um, it will make me feel confident.

0:47:50 > 0:47:56Ladies and gentlemen, we are now ready to commence competition 31.

0:47:56 > 0:48:02The Girl's Championship, 10 to 11 years.

0:48:02 > 0:48:08Competitors 177, 178 and 179.

0:48:54 > 0:49:00Competitors 118, 120 and 121.

0:49:42 > 0:49:45That's beautiful. That's really, really good.

0:49:45 > 0:49:48- Where's Lisa and Karen?- They're in there, did you want to talk to them?

0:49:48 > 0:49:51Are you happy now? It was beautiful. Beautiful.

0:49:56 > 0:49:58One and two, four...

0:49:58 > 0:50:00Up two, three, four, five, six, seven

0:50:00 > 0:50:03and turn, three, four, five and hat, leap up.

0:50:03 > 0:50:09'The first round is in heavy shoes. It's all about rhythm and moving.'

0:50:09 > 0:50:11Their second round is a soft shoe round.

0:50:11 > 0:50:16It's more about lifting, it's quite balletic, maybe.

0:50:16 > 0:50:19A lot of flying around the floor, high kicks and jumps.

0:50:19 > 0:50:23Then the marks are added up for those two rounds

0:50:23 > 0:50:27and the best third are recalled back to do their set dance

0:50:27 > 0:50:30and it's in heavy shoes again

0:50:30 > 0:50:33It's basically your showpiece to show off what you can do.

0:50:39 > 0:50:43The night before a competition I sleep with these two

0:50:43 > 0:50:47and this one's usually at the end of the bed.

0:50:47 > 0:50:52This one's usually by the pillows

0:50:52 > 0:50:57but...they keep me warm

0:50:57 > 0:51:00and...comfortable.

0:51:01 > 0:51:04And his tooth fell out, didn't it?

0:51:04 > 0:51:05Trying to open a bottle.

0:51:05 > 0:51:08Put it under your pillow.

0:51:09 > 0:51:14I'm up at six in the morning and I go to the venue at seven.

0:51:14 > 0:51:17Now John has to go through the steps.

0:51:28 > 0:51:33My New Year's resolution was that I'm going to concentrate.

0:51:37 > 0:51:39He's just a little fire cracker.

0:51:39 > 0:51:43Everyone's, "Oh, you're a cheeky fellow. I love watching him dance,

0:51:43 > 0:51:47"he's so good." I was, "Yeah, when he doesn't stop, he's brilliant."

0:51:47 > 0:51:51Concentrate on what you're doing. Think about your head.

0:51:51 > 0:51:53Think about your left foot

0:51:53 > 0:51:56and think about pushing that click above your head.

0:51:56 > 0:51:57Good luck.

0:52:02 > 0:52:07Our first competitors, numbers 104, 105 and 106.

0:52:42 > 0:52:44- Was that good?- Yeah, really good.

0:52:44 > 0:52:48He'll probably stay brilliant, hopefully.

0:52:48 > 0:52:49I can breathe now.

0:52:52 > 0:52:54He's smiling a lot.

0:52:58 > 0:53:02I did watch him in one of the feises and I thought he danced brilliant

0:53:02 > 0:53:04and the guy next me said, "He's won, he's won."

0:53:04 > 0:53:09Well, he came third or second and I got a bit annoyed about that.

0:53:09 > 0:53:12I thought, you know, "They've got it wrong!"

0:53:12 > 0:53:14But I don't know, so...

0:53:14 > 0:53:18They know what they're doing at the front, the judges, I presume.

0:53:20 > 0:53:24Each band will be judged by a different group of five judges

0:53:24 > 0:53:28and those judges have 100 points to award to the first place winner.

0:53:28 > 0:53:32You put them in here because our art form's very subjective.

0:53:32 > 0:53:33We don't encourage consultation,

0:53:33 > 0:53:36They're can't speak about the competition

0:53:36 > 0:53:38and they are very heavily policed.

0:53:38 > 0:53:44So we actually have a system where our judges are chaperoned.

0:53:44 > 0:53:48We don't have such a thing as fault penalties.

0:53:48 > 0:53:50We try not to restrict the judge.

0:53:50 > 0:53:54At the end of the day, a lot of it comes down to personal taste.

0:53:54 > 0:53:57She's got the whole of her family coming over.

0:54:08 > 0:54:14There's been visa problems so a few of them have been denied their visas

0:54:14 > 0:54:16to come into the country.

0:54:20 > 0:54:23One of the things we were trying to do was to make the team stand out

0:54:23 > 0:54:27on the stage like they deserve to be there.

0:54:27 > 0:54:30Then they're told they're not allowed to come into the country.

0:54:30 > 0:54:34They've just been beaten down, you know, for no reason at all

0:54:34 > 0:54:39and it'll be hard to get them to give that energetic performance

0:54:39 > 0:54:42that we were hoping we would see on the stage this time.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45And we all tried to do it, not just for ourselves,

0:54:45 > 0:54:50dancing on the stage, but also for the guys who stayed in Moscow.

0:54:50 > 0:54:54And as Anna, the girl who stayed in Moscow she wrote us,

0:54:54 > 0:54:58"Do your best, dance good for me."

0:55:00 > 0:55:03We'll try to do it for her as well.

0:55:03 > 0:55:07Instead of kind of getting knocked down, give it more of a push.

0:55:07 > 0:55:10From today and tomorrow, when we're doing all the practices,

0:55:10 > 0:55:13keep that focus, keep that drive. Let's do it.

0:55:13 > 0:55:17One and two, nice dancing, stretch it up and back and four

0:55:17 > 0:55:22and five and six and seven and eight. Where's the faces?

0:55:40 > 0:55:43We're now ready to commence the second round

0:55:43 > 0:55:47of the Girls' Under-11 Championship.

0:55:51 > 0:55:56On stage now we have 120 and 121.

0:56:22 > 0:56:25173 and 174.

0:56:46 > 0:56:50APPLAUSE

0:56:59 > 0:57:01- Well, done. - Thank you, Daddy.

0:57:01 > 0:57:04- Come here.- Mummy.

0:57:04 > 0:57:06- Well, done.- Oh, thank you.

0:57:06 > 0:57:08I thought she just flew round there like a bird.

0:57:08 > 0:57:11Were you content with yourself with the way you danced?

0:57:11 > 0:57:14You couldn't have done any better. We're so proud of you.

0:57:35 > 0:57:36That's amazing.

0:58:02 > 0:58:06And the next event will be competition number six.

0:58:06 > 0:58:09Boys 15 to 16 age group.

0:58:12 > 0:58:15And now we have 105 and 104, in that order.

0:58:46 > 0:58:49CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:59:06 > 0:59:09OK and just do the best you can, because you deserve to up there.

0:59:09 > 0:59:11OK? You've got that. Are you ready?

0:59:11 > 0:59:12Yeah!

0:59:45 > 0:59:48APPLAUSE

1:00:00 > 1:00:05- ANNOUNCER:- I am just going to read you the recall in numerical order.

1:00:05 > 1:00:07SHE SPEAKS RUSSIAN

1:00:11 > 1:00:14123, 127,

1:00:14 > 1:00:18136, 139...

1:00:18 > 1:00:21CHEERING

1:00:21 > 1:00:23..140, 146...

1:00:23 > 1:00:25CHEERING

1:00:25 > 1:00:30151, 152, 159.

1:00:30 > 1:00:32No.

1:00:34 > 1:00:37Just so nervous, it's a nervy time.

1:00:37 > 1:00:40- Yeah, my hands are sweating. - Yeah, shaking.

1:00:40 > 1:00:44Well, battle on and you'll be even better next year.

1:00:45 > 1:00:48Yeah? OK. Let's have a drink.

1:01:32 > 1:01:34The competition is really tough.

1:01:34 > 1:01:39The top three is like, they're like Titans. You just can't move them.

1:01:43 > 1:01:47Between number four and eight is about the same level

1:01:47 > 1:01:51and then the first three are a little step higher.

1:01:54 > 1:01:56So it could be between fourth and eighth, I think.

1:01:56 > 1:02:00But he has to see improvement. If he becomes eighth this year,

1:02:00 > 1:02:03that's going to be a huge disappointment.

1:02:47 > 1:02:50APPLAUSE

1:02:58 > 1:03:01Next, we have the results for competition number five.

1:03:01 > 1:03:03Boys 16 to 17.

1:03:03 > 1:03:06190.5.
