0:00:46 > 0:00:51inspired the Russian Revolution, lived here for more than 20 years.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55His most famous work, The Condition of the Working Class in England,

0:00:55 > 0:00:58was based on what he saw in Manchester.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01I wanted to bring a symbol of Communism back to its roots,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03and to make this connection concrete.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07Ceremony is three things seen through the prism of Engels.

0:01:07 > 0:01:12One, the search for a statue of him and its journey back home.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14Two, the everyday stories of people from Manchester who welcomed me

0:01:14 > 0:01:16into their lives.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20And three, a homecoming party to inaugurate the statue.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25Since the financial crash, Britain has changed beyond recognition.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29It seems to many that the parallels between the conditions Engels was

0:01:29 > 0:01:32writing about and the realities of life in Britain today

0:01:32 > 0:01:33are blindingly obvious.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51And me, I never left the area.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55The words they used against us changed around me.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14So I set out to look for a statue of Engels.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17I hit the road in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20and I discover that an Engels in good nick with a passport out

0:02:20 > 0:02:22is a hard thing to find.

0:02:22 > 0:02:28The poster boys of the revolution have always been Lenin and Marx.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32Engels, for the most part, appears only as Marx's sidekick.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37In some countries, they still keep pride of place.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39In others, the statues are removed,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41but the villages hide them, just in case.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46As they explained, things might change, you never know.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Well, true enough, you don't.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59Mention it in Manchester, epicentre of a pop cultural revolution,

0:11:45 > 0:11:48and one lucky Engels gets a new home in Manchester.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54When he arrives, he will be taken to Engels's Exchange,

0:11:54 > 0:11:58a square transformed for one day into a shared space of ideas,

0:11:58 > 0:12:00and the kind of a good time which Engels loved.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05As well as being a committed revolutionary,

0:12:05 > 0:12:09his favourite saying, unbelievably, was the very Mancunian,

0:12:09 > 0:12:11"take it easy".

0:12:11 > 0:12:14I invited local activists and community groups

0:12:14 > 0:12:17to set up stations where they could discuss with the public

0:12:17 > 0:12:20the continuities between today's situation and Engels's work.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24He should be as relevant to us today

0:12:24 > 0:12:26as he was for the Russian Revolution.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29You get sent home now. You get sent home.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Who is Friedrich Engels?

0:13:18 > 0:13:22Well, the son of a German mill owner.

0:13:24 > 0:13:28And the family owned a factory in Weaste in Salford.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31It's called Ermen and Engels.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34And later on, it gets called Winterbottoms,

0:13:34 > 0:13:37some of you might remember it as Winterbottoms.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41In 1842, Engels's dad says, "Right, son,

0:13:46 > 0:13:52So he's 22 years old, and he comes over here, starts off as a clerk,

0:13:52 > 0:13:55and later steps into the boss seat.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59And that's the brilliant contradiction about this man.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02He's a capitalist boss by day,

0:14:02 > 0:14:05but he's a Communist party animal by night.

0:14:05 > 0:14:09And he spends the next 20 years living, and loving,

0:14:09 > 0:14:11and working in Manchester.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14And he does fall in love,

0:14:14 > 0:14:16he falls in love with a woman on the factory floor,

0:14:16 > 0:14:19and her name is Mary Burns.

0:14:19 > 0:14:24They don't get married, because they don't believe in marriage.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27They don't believe in the idea of women as property.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33We haven't got any pictures of Mary, we don't know what she looked like.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36But she's really important in the story of Engels,

0:14:36 > 0:14:39because she took him into the back streets of Manchester,

0:14:39 > 0:14:42and she showed him the real life of the working people,

0:14:42 > 0:14:47which at that time was poor housing, ill health,

0:14:47 > 0:14:49exploitation, overcrowding,

0:14:49 > 0:14:52and a general lack of workers' rights.

0:28:43 > 0:28:46with their emphasis on solidarity and liberation movements,

0:28:46 > 0:28:50were part of what I thought of when I dreamed of Engel's Exchange.

0:28:55 > 0:28:57but of collective interests.
