0:01:30 > 0:01:32And I've only just read it,
0:01:32 > 0:01:34so, you know, there's only so much you can prepare.
0:01:34 > 0:01:36But it's good to hear the whole story
0:01:36 > 0:01:38and good to hear people's first impressions,
0:01:38 > 0:01:40it really is a first impression.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42And sometimes you really go for it.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46I think the thing that blew us away about Arthur was -
0:01:46 > 0:01:49and we saw a lot of good people for the part of Rory -
0:01:49 > 0:01:51was just how funny he was.
0:01:51 > 0:01:55Arthur has that perfect... He always finds a perfect moment for a gag.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58You just summoned aliens back to Earth!
0:01:58 > 0:01:59Actual aliens.
0:01:59 > 0:02:00Deadly aliens.
0:02:00 > 0:02:05Aliens of death. And now you're taking your clothes off.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08He found a space next to our two leads,
0:02:08 > 0:02:10who already seemed rather complete.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12But he actually, once he comes in,
0:02:12 > 0:02:15it's quite hard to imagine the show without him,
0:02:15 > 0:02:18which is a tremendous tribute to Arthur's brilliance.
0:02:18 > 0:02:19- Hi.- Hello.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22Oh, you're a doctor!
0:02:22 > 0:02:25Oh, yeah. And, unlike you, I've passed some exams.
0:02:25 > 0:02:27A doctor, not a nurse, just like you always dreamed.
0:02:27 > 0:02:31I think the three of us get on really well in,
0:02:31 > 0:02:33you know, in real life,
0:02:33 > 0:02:38which makes it, you know, far easier to get on with working,
0:02:38 > 0:02:40you know, at work.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42It's the first day on location
0:02:42 > 0:02:47and the TARDIS trio are getting the final touches to their bump,
0:02:47 > 0:02:48- quiff... - HE MOUTHS
0:02:48 > 0:02:50..and um...
0:02:50 > 0:02:52rat-tail.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55(Status Quo!)
0:02:55 > 0:02:58MUSIC: "Whatever You Want" by Status Quo
0:03:10 > 0:03:13I think it was called like a Britney wig, or something, at first.
0:03:13 > 0:03:17So, yeah, I look pretty... pretty good.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20Then Babs, the make-up designer for this did an amazing job cutting it
0:03:20 > 0:03:24to make it look a bit more masculine...a bit more masculine,
0:03:24 > 0:03:26and then put it back in a ponytail.
0:03:26 > 0:03:30Everyone basically has just told me how cool I look with it.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34There have been no negative comments so far.
0:03:34 > 0:03:36It was hideous, I think it's safe to say.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38But it was really funny.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41It made Arthur look really different.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44I find him quite scary to look at, actually.
0:03:44 > 0:03:47And I hope he doesn't get any ideas
0:03:47 > 0:03:50and decides to grow his hair like that.
0:03:50 > 0:03:55And in this episode, it wasn't just Arthur's hair which gained some extra body.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58Hello and welcome to a new segment of Doctor Who Confidential
0:03:58 > 0:04:00called Arthur Chews The Fat.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03I will be chatting to the good and the great on Doctor Who
0:04:03 > 0:04:06and literally today I will be chewing the fat
0:04:06 > 0:04:08with Karen Gillan.
0:04:08 > 0:04:09- SHE LAUGHS - Hello!
0:04:09 > 0:04:10- Hi, Kazzer.- Hi.
0:04:10 > 0:04:14Um, a few quick questions for you today.
0:04:14 > 0:04:17- What do you mean, literally chewing the fat?- Nothing.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20OK. Fire away!
0:04:20 > 0:04:22So, how is it, being massive?
0:04:22 > 0:04:26It's fantastic. I'd like to introduce you to my...
0:04:26 > 0:04:30- ..our, in fact...- Yeah. - ..unborn child.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33- What is it actually made of? - I don't know.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36Ray, what is this, what's inside the bump?
0:04:36 > 0:04:39It's a latex prosthetic bump.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42- OK.- So it's completely latex. - Ray Holman, costume.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45- That's why we have a little belly button.- Belly button.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47See. Woo!
0:04:47 > 0:04:50No stuffing. So it's slightly heavy as well.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54And I have massive breasts made of lentils.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56That's lovely.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58I developed a bump dance,
0:04:58 > 0:05:02which is basically kind of moving it around and shaking it
0:05:02 > 0:05:03and it just looked really weird.
0:05:03 > 0:05:05Go on, go on!
0:05:05 > 0:05:06Show them the belly dance!
0:05:17 > 0:05:21We're in Skenfrith village, it's an amazing little village.
0:05:21 > 0:05:23I haven't actually seen anyone who lives here.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26I think they've all run away for the day.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28First thing we're doing today
0:05:28 > 0:05:33is just before we see the children turn to dust,
0:05:33 > 0:05:34then we've got a massive...
0:05:34 > 0:05:36It's a five- or six-page scene with the Dream Lord
0:05:36 > 0:05:39in the village, which will take up most of the day.
0:05:42 > 0:05:43Course you don't.
0:05:43 > 0:05:47Course I do. No idea how you can be here, but there's only one person
0:05:47 > 0:05:49in the universe who hates me as much as you do.
0:05:49 > 0:05:54Never mind me. Maybe you should worry about them.
0:05:55 > 0:06:00So many of the monsters in Doctor Who are kind of computer-generated
0:06:00 > 0:06:03and to have a whole bunch of people
0:06:03 > 0:06:07with Zimmer frames and walking sticks with their mouths open was pretty...
0:06:07 > 0:06:10I mean, it was hilarious. But it was quite scary.
0:06:10 > 0:06:14# They say I might as well face the truth
0:06:14 > 0:06:17# That I am just too long in the tooth
0:06:17 > 0:06:20# I started to deteriorate
0:06:20 > 0:06:24# And now I'm past my own sell-by date... #
0:06:24 > 0:06:27Now we get a terrible insight into the mind of Simon Nye, don't we?
0:06:30 > 0:06:34I asked him to come up with a Doctor Who monster and he thought, "Old people!"
0:06:34 > 0:06:38Well done, Simon, you strange man. I think it's a brilliant idea!
0:06:38 > 0:06:41# So I'm a wrinkly crinkly But don't shed a tear
0:06:41 > 0:06:45# I'm not exactly a little old dear
0:06:45 > 0:06:48# One thing's for sure I'm still bloody well here
0:06:48 > 0:06:51# One foot in the grave
0:06:52 > 0:06:55# One foot in the grave
0:06:55 > 0:06:59# One foot in the grave. #
0:06:59 > 0:07:02It looks like I've got it in for old people.
0:07:02 > 0:07:04I just think there is something scary,
0:07:04 > 0:07:06especially if you're young, about old people.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09I'm heading that way myself, as we all are, hopefully, one day,
0:07:09 > 0:07:12but I think we can all remember, as a child particularly,
0:07:12 > 0:07:17lovely aunts and grandparents just looking a bit scary.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20Hello! We were wondering where you went.
0:07:20 > 0:07:22To get reinforcements, by the look of it.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25Are you all right? You look a bit tense.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28And it's partly to do with the teeth, perhaps,
0:07:28 > 0:07:31which is why the Eknodines in this episode,
0:07:31 > 0:07:33who invaded these poor people's bodies,
0:07:33 > 0:07:36they emerge from their mouths.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38There is an eye in her mouth!
0:07:38 > 0:07:42There's a whole creature inside her, inside all of them, living and waiting.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44WHIRRING
0:07:44 > 0:07:47I hope I don't put children off their grandparents
0:07:47 > 0:07:50because, obviously, we should be learning from the elderly
0:07:50 > 0:07:53rather than mocking them or making them look scary.
0:07:53 > 0:07:55But, um, that's what we're doing in this episode.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59The next day, the Who crew head off into the country
0:07:59 > 0:08:01for Rory's dream house.
0:08:01 > 0:08:02Release the geese!
0:08:10 > 0:08:12So I'm about to hit an old woman with a stick...
0:08:13 > 0:08:16..which isn't something I've done before.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21I'm quite looking forward to it. I forgot we were doing this today!
0:08:22 > 0:08:24Yeah...
0:08:24 > 0:08:25It's a big stick as well.
0:08:25 > 0:08:27Little old lady.
0:08:27 > 0:08:32And obviously, just pull it and she'll just squat out of shot.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35Believe it or not, it's not a real piece of wood.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38It's made of something else.
0:08:39 > 0:08:40So, er...
0:08:41 > 0:08:43..so it's softer, but it looks like a piece of wood.
0:08:43 > 0:08:46So...that's a bit of inside information.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49Mrs Hammill... we don't understand.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51SCREECHING
0:08:53 > 0:08:56I'll deal with this one, chubs...
0:08:56 > 0:09:00'We only have one piece of wood and I broke it quite early on.'
0:09:01 > 0:09:04- I can't hit her.- Whack her!
0:09:11 > 0:09:14We got the shots, thank God, but...
0:09:15 > 0:09:17..I-I just broke it.
0:09:18 > 0:09:19I'll deal with this, chubs...
0:09:19 > 0:09:24'Obviously, Audrey is there and it looks like...
0:09:24 > 0:09:26'I hit her with a big piece of wood...'
0:09:26 > 0:09:28- I can't hit her.- Whack her!
0:09:29 > 0:09:32- HE GROANS - 'The way they shoot it is really clever.'
0:09:32 > 0:09:35When she's facing the camera, you kind of go to hit,
0:09:35 > 0:09:38but you don't actually touch. And then they cut to a shot from...
0:09:38 > 0:09:42behind her, which is actually a stunt woman who I was allowed to hit.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44- I really hit her with it?- Yes.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48I wasn't quite sure if I...
0:09:48 > 0:09:51if I hit hard enough, if it looked real enough.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54But I watched it back and I think it does.
0:09:54 > 0:09:58They'll cut it together and put a big sound effect on it so I'm sure it'll be...
0:09:58 > 0:10:01It's very weird just hitting someone with a stick.
0:10:06 > 0:10:07I can't hit her!
0:10:07 > 0:10:09SHE TUTS Whack her!
0:10:16 > 0:10:19I think we've only got a couple more days left on this episode...
0:10:20 > 0:10:22..which is a bit weird.
0:10:24 > 0:10:26It's kind of coming to the end.
0:10:27 > 0:10:30But, yeah, it's going... It's funny, I went through the script...
0:10:30 > 0:10:34last night again, and I haven't even shot most of it.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37And it's like, "Oh, wow." It's gone really fast.
0:10:37 > 0:10:39Quiet, please.
0:10:39 > 0:10:43And Arthur's last adventure is to film Rory Williams's long goodbye.
0:10:43 > 0:10:45- Action! - GASPING
0:10:45 > 0:10:48The death scene was really weird because it was so quick.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50It happens so out of the blue.
0:10:50 > 0:10:51SCREAMING
0:10:54 > 0:10:56HE SCREAMS Rory!
0:10:56 > 0:10:59'It's horrible because Rory, at that point knows'
0:10:59 > 0:11:00it's his reality.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02No! I'm not ready!
0:11:02 > 0:11:07'It's like everything he ever wanted is just completely being denied.'
0:11:08 > 0:11:10Look after our baby.
0:11:14 > 0:11:18'I think in that moment, Amy realises her feelings towards him.'
0:11:18 > 0:11:19No...
0:11:21 > 0:11:22Come back.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25It's just tragic it takes something like that for her to realise.
0:11:25 > 0:11:31'It is to her own shock, absolutely clear to the moment she loses Rory,
0:11:31 > 0:11:32'that she could not bear'
0:11:32 > 0:11:35to be without him. And that is proper shock.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38It's not the Doctor, it's never been the Doctor, it's about Rory.
0:11:38 > 0:11:43I think Amy surprises herself by realising that it's great to have
0:11:43 > 0:11:47an enigmatic genius to run around after
0:11:47 > 0:11:49and be with, but in the end,
0:11:49 > 0:11:53that's perhaps not enough. I think she realises that...
0:11:53 > 0:11:55she really does love Rory.
0:11:55 > 0:11:57This is the dream.
0:11:57 > 0:11:58How do you know?
0:11:58 > 0:12:02Because if this is real life, I don't want it.
0:12:02 > 0:12:03I don't want it.
0:12:05 > 0:12:07Massive turn in their relationship,
0:12:07 > 0:12:12you know, when Rory dies. Maybe he realises exactly what she wants.
0:12:13 > 0:12:14OK.
0:12:16 > 0:12:20Killing herself in a dream where she doesn't know if she's going to wake up,
0:12:20 > 0:12:22but the thought of living without him is...
0:12:22 > 0:12:24not worth considering.
0:12:24 > 0:12:26'It's amazing.
0:12:26 > 0:12:27'It really cements...
0:12:27 > 0:12:29'their relationship...'
0:12:29 > 0:12:33at that point. And it makes Rory so happy.
0:12:36 > 0:12:37Oh, wahey!
0:12:42 > 0:12:45From now on, trust nothing you see, hear or feel.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24This is good.
0:13:33 > 0:13:35So...?
0:13:35 > 0:13:37Well, then?
0:13:37 > 0:13:38Where now?
0:13:39 > 0:13:41I don't know. Anywhere is good for me.
0:13:41 > 0:13:44I'm happy anywhere.
0:13:44 > 0:13:46It's up to Amy this time.
0:13:47 > 0:13:48Amy's choice.
