0:00:52 > 0:00:56and these monuments are so identifiable. One shot, you know exactly where you are.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59This is the country of John Wayne.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01This is the US of A.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15then we come up and meet the bus as it's going past.
0:01:15 > 0:01:19See the angle we're at with the road now.
0:01:19 > 0:01:23Travel with the bus a little bit, then on to... Let the bus...
0:01:23 > 0:01:26Let it go ahead, then reveal the monuments.

0:02:13 > 0:02:18- Flirt!- Husband! - Rory the Roman, come here, you!
0:02:18 > 0:02:20One of the things we wanted to do while we were here
0:02:20 > 0:02:22was get American icons into the story,
0:02:22 > 0:02:26so in this scene, the original script had a truck pulling up
0:02:26 > 0:02:27and the Doctor getting out
0:02:27 > 0:02:31but we wanted a way of getting another of those American icons in,
0:02:31 > 0:02:34so Toby had the brilliant idea of swapping it for a yellow school bus,
0:02:34 > 0:02:36which everybody knows from movies.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39It's just another little bit of America that we can't get in the UK.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45- Day three.- In America.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47It's pretty cold. Here he comes.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50- Missing the good stuff right here. - Oh, dear.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52How's it going out there, Matt?
0:02:52 > 0:02:54- It's day three in... - We've already done that.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56I know, I felt a bit left out.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58Come in, get in this shot, you.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00It's wonderful, I've got to say.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03You know, we've got these wonderful locations.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06This place is, you've seen it for yourselves,
0:03:06 > 0:03:10it's just devastatingly vast and epic.
0:03:10 > 0:03:15Nearly fell on the seaweed there, well done, Confidential.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17Yeah, so you know,
0:03:17 > 0:03:19I think it's going to do something really brilliant
0:03:19 > 0:03:21for these first two episodes
0:03:21 > 0:03:25and sort of start us off on a grand scale, you know?
0:03:25 > 0:03:27See you on the other side, dudes.
0:03:46 > 0:03:50We're on Lone Rock Beach, which is a beautiful part of Lake Powell,
0:03:50 > 0:03:52which is a huge body of water in Arizona.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56In fact, it stretches across the state line into Utah as well.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58In the scene we're shooting today -
0:03:58 > 0:04:01and tomorrow as well, because it's a huge scene -
0:04:01 > 0:04:05it's one of the kind of seminal scenes of the episode.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08It's a really key moment for the Doctor's story in the episode
0:04:08 > 0:04:10and across the series.
0:04:10 > 0:04:14Of course, Stephen has packed in every element you can imagine.
0:04:14 > 0:04:16We've got the four principal cast.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19I'm just trying to get in shot here because your hair, Alex, there.
0:04:19 > 0:04:20Oh, is that what it is?
0:04:20 > 0:04:24We've got the first appearance of Canton in his older guise.
0:04:24 > 0:04:28We've got an astronaut coming out of the lake, as you do.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31An authentic Apollo 11 astronaut,
0:04:31 > 0:04:34so we've had to get the suit specially fabricated.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37It's an absolute replica,
0:04:37 > 0:04:41right down to the design of the helmet and the badges on it.
0:04:42 > 0:04:44Because it's coming out of the water
0:04:44 > 0:04:48and their suits were designed to be used in space and not in the sea,
0:04:48 > 0:04:51we've had to adapt it slightly. We've got a stuntman inside it.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05- Action.- Oh, my God.
0:05:09 > 0:05:11You all need to stay back.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14Whatever happens now, you do not interfere.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19There's no question that Time Lords can die.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21The Doctor is running from real death.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24He's not running from the possibility of a new body.
0:05:24 > 0:05:28So if you kill him fast enough, then, yes, he won't regenerate.
0:05:28 > 0:05:30The Doctor is now standing still, preparing.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32So after you've said it and agreed to do it,
0:05:32 > 0:05:35that's when you just stand ready
0:05:35 > 0:05:36and go "OK, it's time now."
0:05:36 > 0:05:41He's being reassuring. "It's OK, it's OK, don't worry, it's fine."
0:05:41 > 0:05:45He then closes his eyes, puts his head back and waits.
0:05:45 > 0:05:50The astronaut raises a gloved hand, pointing at him
0:05:50 > 0:05:53and...bang, like that.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56He really does die in that first scene and that really is him.
0:05:56 > 0:06:02So I'm going to get my arms back, I look at you and I'm going to go...
0:06:02 > 0:06:04Exactly. Action.
0:06:12 > 0:06:16Hello. It's OK. I know it's you.
0:06:20 > 0:06:22Well, then.
0:06:22 > 0:06:23GUNSHOTS
0:06:25 > 0:06:26- No!- We have to stay back.
0:06:31 > 0:06:33Doctor!
0:06:37 > 0:06:38I'm sorry.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42He starts to regenerate
0:06:42 > 0:06:44and gets shot during that regeneration cycle
0:06:44 > 0:06:47so he doesn't live forever and he's not indestructible.
0:06:53 > 0:06:55GUNSHOT
0:07:16 > 0:07:19For all the kind of spacemen,
0:07:19 > 0:07:22cowboys and sort of adventure that Doctor Who has,
0:07:22 > 0:07:25at the heart of this was a very emotional kind of moment,
0:07:25 > 0:07:28a true moment of a friend who's gone.
0:07:28 > 0:07:29SHE SOBS
0:07:34 > 0:07:36Won't wake up. You're dead.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38It's not possible.
0:07:40 > 0:07:44Whatever that was, it killed him in the middle of his regeneration cycle.
0:07:44 > 0:07:48His body was already dead. He didn't make it to the next one.
0:07:50 > 0:07:52Maybe he's a clone or a duplicate.
0:07:52 > 0:07:56Doctor Song, I believe I can save you some time.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03That most certainly is the Doctor.
0:08:04 > 0:08:06And he is most certainly dead.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12He said you'd need this.
0:08:22 > 0:08:28Karen, who plays Amy, when we shot the scene, she was incredibly distraught.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30Doctor.
0:08:31 > 0:08:33SHE WHISPERS
0:08:34 > 0:08:38I know it's a trick, so wake up. Come on, wake up.
0:08:38 > 0:08:40SHE SOBS
0:08:42 > 0:08:44Our hearts were in our mouths.
0:08:44 > 0:08:49You almost don't want to say cut because she's crying so much.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51It was very emotional.
0:08:51 > 0:08:56It was very kind of, she was really acting her heart out out there,
0:08:56 > 0:09:01and it just was, you know, we knew that it was powerful.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03Almost too powerful and we had to pull it back.
0:09:03 > 0:09:07I think it's good to see characters at that extreme.
0:09:07 > 0:09:11We've seen them be happy and jolly. We've seen them have adventures.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15We rarely see them - more often this year - facing the consequences
0:09:15 > 0:09:17of that extraordinary lifestyle with the Doctor.
0:09:17 > 0:09:20People do die. Sometimes it's be the wrong people
0:09:20 > 0:09:22and sometimes it's the people you love.
0:09:26 > 0:09:29We came here a couple of days ago and recced this place
0:09:29 > 0:09:31and knew we had to shoot a scene at dusk.
0:09:32 > 0:09:37We noticed the sun went down over there, which is the wrong direction.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40We wanted to have a beautiful sunset over the Doctor's burial,
0:09:40 > 0:09:47so we figured if we do it in the morning we get a perfect, amazing sky
0:09:47 > 0:09:49and it'll look like evening.
0:09:49 > 0:09:53But we won't have enough time to do the whole scene in the morning,
0:09:53 > 0:09:54so we split the scenes.
0:09:54 > 0:09:59Looked one way in the morning and got a beautiful sky behind Arthur and the Doctor burning.
0:09:59 > 0:10:01And then we looked the other way the day before,
0:10:01 > 0:10:04and we had beautiful sky behind everybody else.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07After the Doctor is dead, they're tasked with burning his body.
0:10:47 > 0:10:51We actually put him in a boat, wrap him and put him in a boat,
0:10:51 > 0:10:55and set him alight like the Vikings.
0:10:55 > 0:11:00It was really, really moving, actually.
0:11:36 > 0:11:38Who are you?
0:11:38 > 0:11:42- Why have you come? - The same reason as you.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53Doctor Song,
0:11:53 > 0:11:54Amy,
0:11:54 > 0:11:57Rory,
0:11:57 > 0:11:59I won't be seeing you again.
0:12:01 > 0:12:03But you'll be seeing me.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08It did feel like the end-of-series moment
0:12:08 > 0:12:11but it had to feel like this is going to set off
0:12:11 > 0:12:15the whole of the second series for Matt Smith and Matt Smith's Doctor.
0:12:16 > 0:12:20- "I'm scared, Mr President." - I think we've gone a bit darker.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22"I'm scared of the spaceman."
0:12:22 > 0:12:26I think that's an inevitable function of just lives getting more complicated,
0:12:26 > 0:12:29the Doctor's continued presence in that young couple's life,
0:12:29 > 0:12:31when he should have gone by now.
0:12:31 > 0:12:33Doctor, I need to tell you something.
0:12:33 > 0:12:37There are major twists in the ongoing plot line
0:12:37 > 0:12:40and it's all about that pregnancy.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42I'm pregnant.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45There's a lot of things we're putting into play at the beginning,
0:12:45 > 0:12:48that are going to pay off later in the series.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51- Who's that?- Now it's starting.
0:12:51 > 0:12:53We are, over the course of 13 episodes,
0:12:53 > 0:12:56going to find out who they are and what they're up to.
0:12:56 > 0:13:00You will tell the Doctor.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02Answers are coming, big answers are coming.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04How can you be OK with this?
0:13:04 > 0:13:06Not to every single question.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09The Doctor's death doesn't frighten me. Nor does my own.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13He will find out who River Song is, definitely, yes.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16There's a far worse day coming for me.
0:13:16 > 0:13:20You do get big and hopefully surprising answers to big questions.
0:13:21 > 0:13:23Spoilers.
