0:01:37 > 0:01:41- Is this Doctor Who Confidential? - Doctor Who Confidential. Look who's back!

0:01:41 > 0:01:43One of the great joys for me in series five

0:01:43 > 0:01:47was how successful and how beloved the episode The Lodger was,

0:01:47 > 0:01:50because it was quite close to my heart, that one.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54- JC's back in the house. - How are you? I've missed you.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58Having had that, the wonderful James Corden playing Craig,

0:01:58 > 0:02:03I said, "Can we do it again? Can you go back and visit again? Is there some other story we can tell?"

0:02:03 > 0:02:05It's a pleasure to see you again.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09It's lovely to come back to the show.

0:02:09 > 0:02:14It was, you know, a pleasant, unexpected surprise, really.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Hello. I... Is it recording? Yes.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19I just love working with Matt, really,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21so it was a no-brainer to come back.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25In between scenes, Matt Smith likes to hold art classes.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27This is one of them.

0:02:27 > 0:02:32I'm never sure how much people getting on off-screen affects on-screen stuff,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35cos they're all really good actors, so they can fake it, frankly.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38You're beginning to annoy me, Corden. JAMES LAUGHS

0:02:38 > 0:02:42But they do get on very well, and that's up there for all to see.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45- What is this?- Don't know.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48The Doctor's this otherworldly guy

0:02:48 > 0:02:51who knows everything about the universe,

0:02:51 > 0:02:54and Craig is this very comfortable guy being pulled along on this adventure,

0:02:54 > 0:02:58and the humour comes out of those two worlds crashing together,

0:02:58 > 0:02:59and it's very funny to watch.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02- Ahh! - We're partners.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03I love you.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07It's nice for baby to have two daddies who love each other.

0:03:07 > 0:03:08Argh!

0:03:08 > 0:03:11The Doctor allows Craig to come along

0:03:11 > 0:03:15and play the part of his companion, and gives him advice,

0:03:15 > 0:03:18and I think Craig is following what the Doctor does, really.

0:03:18 > 0:03:23He thinks if you go up and speak to people in that confidential way,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25that they'll respond. He's trying it out.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27He thinks, "If the Doctor can do it, so can I."

0:03:27 > 0:03:31All right, Alfie. You watch Daddy investigate.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33You look cute, I'll do the talking.

0:03:33 > 0:03:39And Craig, unfortunately... meets Kelly, and it goes very badly.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41And action.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Good afternoon, sir. Can I help you?

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Hello.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59- I'm Craig.- Yeah?

0:03:59 > 0:04:04I was kind of thinking about him sort of bumbling through that.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09- Do you mind if I ask you some questions?- You what?

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Just between me and you, in confidence,

0:04:11 > 0:04:14have you noticed anything...

0:04:14 > 0:04:16unusual?

0:04:16 > 0:04:19- Interesting?- You what?

0:04:19 > 0:04:21Talk to me about ladies' wear.

0:04:21 > 0:04:22George!

0:04:23 > 0:04:27He gets too close to Kelly, asking her too many questions.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31As he backs away, we got him to keep bumping into this sales unit,

0:04:31 > 0:04:34and he knocked it over time after time after time.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37It almost felt like a stunt. We just kept the camera running.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Some of the stuff that happened afterwards is so funny.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43We had to cut away to get the impact to be in another scene,

0:04:43 > 0:04:45but what happened was very funny.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47Look how cute my baby is!

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Look at his face!

0:04:49 > 0:04:51- All right...- Oh!- Whoa!

0:04:51 > 0:04:55So sorry. I'll be all right. I'll be...

0:04:55 > 0:04:57I'm all right now.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Sorry. I've got it.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04I've got it.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06- Get that? - THEY LAUGH

0:05:07 > 0:05:10- THEY LAUGH AND CHATTER - And cut. Thank you.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Very good.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19Hey, come with me. Come and look who this is.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21Are you a Radio 1 fan?

0:05:21 > 0:05:24- You a Radio 1 fan, yeah?- Absolutely.

0:05:24 > 0:05:26- Doctor Who Confidential...- Hiya.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28- It's Greg James.- All right?

0:05:28 > 0:05:31- From Radio 1. - That's exciting, isn't it?

0:05:31 > 0:05:33He sent me a text saying, "I'm coming to Doctor Who.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36"I think it's when you're there." He came down,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38and he had a bit of a shock when it was nights,

0:05:38 > 0:05:41and he's in the back of shot in one of my scenes.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45So if you look behind James when he's being extra-creepy,

0:05:45 > 0:05:48you'll see Greg James shopping for ladies' underwear,

0:05:48 > 0:05:50and the only note I gave to him was,

0:05:50 > 0:05:52"Make sure you're looking...

0:05:52 > 0:05:56So you catch a couple of flashes of Greg over James's shoulder.

0:05:56 > 0:06:02Today I've been playing the role of "man in lingerie department",

0:06:02 > 0:06:05which I can do really well.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07I do it most Saturdays, so...

0:06:07 > 0:06:12I just brought that here today to Cardiff. I have to react and go...

0:06:12 > 0:06:16Like the acting? I've a got a 2:1 in drama.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19- Sorry, George.- OK. Cut that.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21'Someone said to me,

0:06:21 > 0:06:25'"Would you like to be in a bit of Doctor Who?"

0:06:25 > 0:06:28'And only an idiot would say no.'

0:06:28 > 0:06:31And they said, "Well, it's a night shoot,"

0:06:31 > 0:06:33and I went, "That's all right. That's fine."

0:06:33 > 0:06:36They said, "It's in Cardiff." I went, "OK. That's fine."

0:06:36 > 0:06:39They said, "You won't be done until one."

0:06:39 > 0:06:43I said, "That's quite late. I've got to be back at Radio by one next day."

0:06:43 > 0:06:45It's now...

0:06:46 > 0:06:48..four o'clock, nearly.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51My train back to London is at eight.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53It was very tough to shoot in the department store,

0:06:53 > 0:06:57because the department store would have to be closed out of hours

0:06:57 > 0:07:01so we could shoot, even though a lot of scenes were set in the daytime.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03We had to shoot from seven o'clock onwards,

0:07:03 > 0:07:06so after the staff went, we'd move in and shoot till six in the morning.

0:07:06 > 0:07:11Don't be surprised if we're not all looking at the 12th Doctor.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15That's all I'll say. And that's not my words.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17That's the words of the producers.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20It was... It was amazing.

0:07:20 > 0:07:25'Greg created a character, and that character was called Carlos.'

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Carlos was shopping for underwear for a friend -

0:07:28 > 0:07:31not his girlfriend, and it was a whole thing, and...

0:07:31 > 0:07:34- Did you not get that by watching it? - Did you not...

0:07:34 > 0:07:37If you watch it back now, you'll see there's a whole thing.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40- That's why he's... - You'll be kicking yourself.

0:07:40 > 0:07:45Yeah. You'll really, um... But, yeah. I was blown away by it.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47On the DVD box, it'll say,

0:07:47 > 0:07:50- "Carlos"...- It'll say "Carlos Who".

0:07:50 > 0:07:53- "Carlos Who". - "Carlos Who, question mark".

0:07:53 > 0:07:55I think filming at four o'clock in the morning

0:07:55 > 0:08:00does put a drain on people. We were only there four or five nights.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Then when we moved to the house, we were finishing at, like...

0:08:03 > 0:08:06four or five in the morning, and me and Matt,

0:08:06 > 0:08:08one night, I mean, we lost it.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14- Craig?- Doctor?

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- Can you hear me? - Yes. I don't know what to do.

0:08:16 > 0:08:22- Listen to me, Craig.- Yes. - There's something in your house now.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24If you see it...

0:08:25 > 0:08:29It's been miniaturised, but it's the most evil, terrible, ghastly thing

0:08:29 > 0:08:31that the universe has ever, ever known.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34What do you mean?

0:08:34 > 0:08:36It's a Dalek.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39- HE GASPS IN FEAR - What does it look like?

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Small. Gold.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44Oh, God. I know. It's in Alfie's room.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49MATT SINGS "DOCTOR WHO THEME" INTRO

0:08:52 > 0:08:54JAMES SINGS THEME MELODY

0:09:02 > 0:09:04THEY LAUGH

0:09:09 > 0:09:10Action.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- Doctor!- Craig!- Do something, please!

0:09:16 > 0:09:17The script was very detailed

0:09:17 > 0:09:20on how Craig was to be turned into a Cyberman.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22- CYBERMAN - Begin conversion.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24One difficult thing about this kind of story

0:09:24 > 0:09:27is, what would normally in Doctor Who be the main plot,

0:09:27 > 0:09:30the alien invasion, doesn't take over till the end,

0:09:30 > 0:09:32and feels like a different movie.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Stage one - cleanse the brain of emotions.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38It becomes a very highly charged emotional scene.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42I want the audience to think, "Maybe they're going to do it."

0:09:42 > 0:09:46No! Craig! Fight it. They can't convert you if you fight back.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- You're strong. Don't give in to it. - Help me!

0:09:49 > 0:09:51Think of Alfie. Don't let them take it all away!

0:09:51 > 0:09:55- Make it stop! Please, make it stop! - Please!

0:09:55 > 0:09:58Listen to me. I believe in you. I believe you can do this.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02I've always believed in all of you, all my life.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06Prove me right!

0:10:06 > 0:10:10The series has got that theme of death and lingering darkness.

0:10:10 > 0:10:14We wanted to try and hold that moment for as long as possible.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Craig! ELECTRICITY CRACKLES

0:10:16 > 0:10:20The Doctor can shout till he's blue in the face to Craig about Alfie,

0:10:20 > 0:10:23and "Don't let it all go", but the crying is the important thing.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26It's the very thing that Craig has hated,

0:10:26 > 0:10:28that triggers that thing inside him,

0:10:28 > 0:10:31so it's almost like Craig has no conscious control over that.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35Emotions eradicated. Conversion complete.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38BABY CRYING

0:10:38 > 0:10:43SONG: "I Am Not A Robot" by Marina And The Diamonds

0:10:43 > 0:10:45# Guess what

0:10:45 > 0:10:48# I'm not a robot

0:10:48 > 0:10:49# A robot #

0:10:49 > 0:10:51Alfie!

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Oh, please, just give me this. Craig!

0:10:54 > 0:10:59You wanted a chance to prove you're a dad. You are never going to get a better one than this.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02- What is happening? - What is happening, you metal moron,

0:11:02 > 0:11:07a baby is crying. And you'd better watch out, because guess what!

0:11:07 > 0:11:10HE LAUGHS Daddy's coming home!

0:11:10 > 0:11:11Alfie!

0:11:11 > 0:11:13HE LAUGHS

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Alfie, I'm here!

0:11:15 > 0:11:18- I'm coming for you!- Yes, Craig! Try!

0:11:18 > 0:11:20Alfie!

0:11:20 > 0:11:22ALFIE WAILS

0:11:22 > 0:11:26- Alfie needs you! - Emergency. Emotional influx.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29- We've got to get out of here! - I know!

0:11:29 > 0:11:32The teleport!

0:11:34 > 0:11:36Agh!

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- Alfie!- Here's your daddy.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47That was another review. Ten out of ten!

0:11:47 > 0:11:50The Cybermen... They blew up!

0:11:50 > 0:11:52I blew 'em up with love.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54It's fatherhood that destroys the Cybermen,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57because that's the real story.

0:11:57 > 0:12:03It's the Doctor Who version of a new father bonding with his son.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05He blows them up with love, you know?

0:12:05 > 0:12:09And I make no apologies for that. HE LAUGHS
