0:00:02 > 0:00:04I feel like we're on the best chat show ever.
0:00:04 > 0:00:06Have you had fun on this episode, gang?
0:00:06 > 0:00:07I've hated every second.
0:00:07 > 0:00:09Really?
0:00:09 > 0:00:14- Have YOU had fun on this episode? - Yeah, I have.- All right, good. - Lots of fun.
0:00:14 > 0:00:18Oh, hurrah. Well, thanks for being the worst interviewees ever.
0:00:40 > 0:00:43It's good to be back, making Dr Who, isn't it?
0:00:43 > 0:00:46We didn't speak to each other over Christmas.
0:00:46 > 0:00:47For a whole day over Christmas.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49We all said the other day,
0:00:49 > 0:00:53we had that thought of going, "I should probably text...
0:00:53 > 0:00:54"Nah."
0:00:54 > 0:00:57I was really sick just before New Year. I had that...
0:00:57 > 0:00:59There's been this bug going around
0:00:59 > 0:01:04and I lost half a stone, puked it all up.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07Which...
0:01:07 > 0:01:11- is a little revealing for Confidential, I suppose. - What is this interview?
0:01:11 > 0:01:13It's cool, it's kind of free-and-easy.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16- Yeah, I quite like it. - It's never going to make the show.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19We know these types of interviews never make the show.
0:01:23 > 0:01:28It's November 2010 and the cast, executive producers
0:01:28 > 0:01:34and show writer have gathered at the Dr Who studios to tackle the doubly hard episodes 5 and 6.
0:01:34 > 0:01:38..Switch our brains around and call the real Doctor The Doctor.
0:01:38 > 0:01:40He was the other Doctor, now he's The Doctor.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43Let's call The Doctor the other Doctor, clear? God, I hope so.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46# I'm about to lose my mind
0:01:46 > 0:01:49# You've been gone for so long
0:01:49 > 0:01:52# I'm running out of time
0:01:52 > 0:01:56# I need a doctor
0:01:56 > 0:01:59# Call me a doctor
0:01:59 > 0:02:03# I need a doctor, doctor... #
0:02:03 > 0:02:07- Oh no! - # ..to bring me back to life. #
0:02:11 > 0:02:14SCREAMING
0:02:16 > 0:02:19The conclusion of this thrilling two-parter
0:02:19 > 0:02:24began with the birth of a doctor and ended with the mystery of a birth.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28# I'm about to lose my mind
0:02:28 > 0:02:32# I need a doctor
0:02:32 > 0:02:35# Doctor to bring me... #
0:02:36 > 0:02:37No, and why?
0:02:37 > 0:02:42Given what we've learned, I'll be as humane as I can, but I need to do this and you need to stand away.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45OK, so I've just been killed by The Doctor.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48Oh, no...
0:02:48 > 0:02:51And then I've woken up...
0:02:51 > 0:02:52and I'm about to have a baby.
0:02:54 > 0:02:58I think it's generally quite shocking.
0:03:00 > 0:03:02I found that scene quite challenging,
0:03:02 > 0:03:06really challenging actually, because...how do you play that?
0:03:06 > 0:03:11You're not even real and somebody who you love and trust is looking
0:03:11 > 0:03:15into your eyes and saying you are not real, I'm going to kill you now.
0:03:15 > 0:03:19I need to do this and you have to stand away.
0:03:19 > 0:03:24'I think that Amy just felt at the time that the two most important people in her life are turning
0:03:24 > 0:03:28'on her, it's like that horrible feeling of betrayal'
0:03:28 > 0:03:31and that kind of, I think, was really horrible for her.
0:03:34 > 0:03:38I'm very frightened, like properly, properly scared.
0:03:38 > 0:03:43Don't be, we're coming for you, I swear it. Whatever happens, however hard. However far.
0:03:43 > 0:03:45- I'm right here.- No.- I'm right here.
0:03:45 > 0:03:51You're not, and you haven't been here for a long, long time.
0:03:51 > 0:03:55I mean, it's just such a huge twist for Amy,
0:03:55 > 0:03:59the life of Amy Pond has taken a turn for the worst
0:03:59 > 0:04:04and she's about to give birth to a baby she didn't even know she was pregnant with.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09Well, dear, you're ready to pop, aren't you?
0:04:09 > 0:04:12One's on its way.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15Well, this is a cliffhanger not just to this two-parter,
0:04:15 > 0:04:19but the whole series, cos it's changed everything we think we know.
0:04:19 > 0:04:25We think we've been looking at Amelia Pond as normal and we now discover that really hasn't been her at all.
0:04:25 > 0:04:30Well, it has been, it's been her mind, her heart, her soul, but it hasn't really been her, physically.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34The flesh Amy's been going through episodes one to six
0:04:34 > 0:04:38and hanging out, having these adventures with The Doctor and Rory,
0:04:38 > 0:04:41while the real Amy's been trapped in this birthing chamber
0:04:41 > 0:04:44with this strange eye-patch woman opening the hatch now and again,
0:04:44 > 0:04:45checking on her progress.
0:04:45 > 0:04:50The reason she's seen the eye-patch woman at strange moments
0:04:50 > 0:04:54is because that reality has been seeping through into her mind.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58The flesh Amy that The Doctor zaps at the end with the Sonic
0:04:58 > 0:05:00is absolutely not a real person.
0:05:00 > 0:05:02He's not killed Amy.
0:05:02 > 0:05:06He's simply cut off the telephone communication between the operator
0:05:06 > 0:05:09and this flesh Amy that's in front of him. So it's like
0:05:09 > 0:05:13snipping a wire and getting rid of a signal rather than actually doing her harm.
0:05:16 > 0:05:17Trust me.
0:05:18 > 0:05:20I'm The Doctor.
0:05:21 > 0:05:26Episode six presented a challenging double role for Matt Smith,
0:05:26 > 0:05:30with the story requiring him to play The Doctor twice.
0:05:31 > 0:05:35Is that what you were thinking? Yes, it's just so inspiring to here me say it.
0:05:37 > 0:05:42Writing for two Doctors, interestingly, suits Matthew Smith's style of performance.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44He almost, even when he's just one Doctor,
0:05:44 > 0:05:47he almost feels to be finishing his own sentences.
0:05:47 > 0:05:51He's always interrupting himself and contradicting himself in mid-flow.
0:05:51 > 0:05:54He always says, "Do I say that? Do I mean that? Do I mean that?"
0:05:54 > 0:05:57And he often is having this internal dialogue with himself.
0:05:57 > 0:06:03- This is insane.- Yes, it's insane. And it's about to get even more insanerer.
0:06:03 > 0:06:04Is that a word?
0:06:04 > 0:06:07In a way, all you're doing is taking that internal dialogue
0:06:07 > 0:06:09and making it external.
0:06:09 > 0:06:12I think the universe is definitely big enough for two Time Lords.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15- Really?- Yeah. Well, there was loads of them at one point.
0:06:15 > 0:06:19- Yeah, I know, and it...- And isn't it always expanding?- Yeah.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22Well, maybe, maybe. I mean...
0:06:22 > 0:06:24- Would you like that? - To have two?- Yeah.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27You could have a friend or a foe...
0:06:27 > 0:06:31- I've got a friend - you.- Yeah, but one who's not your, like...
0:06:31 > 0:06:36- Basically the equivalent of a hamster.- Yeah! Is that what you are?
0:06:36 > 0:06:38Like one of your pets.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42Shall I get you a little wheel in the TARDIS with one of those little...
0:06:43 > 0:06:46- Yeah!- That'd be funny. - One of those water things.
0:06:46 > 0:06:50- And you as a person are quite hamster-like.- Do you think? - You're quite sort of...
0:06:50 > 0:06:54- nibbly.- Yeah, today I was.- You were having a right old nibble on your crackers.
0:06:54 > 0:06:58But I think one Doctor, cos it makes it tough for him...
0:06:58 > 0:07:01- One universe, one Doctor... - Yeah, for sure.- ..one hamster.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07- It is a really scary episode, I think.- I hope so.
0:07:07 > 0:07:09- We want this one to be scary, don't we?- Yeah.
0:07:09 > 0:07:11- It's fun to make the scary stuff.- Yeah.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22We've been filming here all week. It's our last day of filming.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28It's called Caerphilly Castle in Caerphilly.
0:07:29 > 0:07:30What they didn't tell us
0:07:30 > 0:07:34while we were filming is that it's in fact haunted.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38Ooooh! So, we're going to meet David now,
0:07:38 > 0:07:42- who's going to basically tell us all about it. Hey, David. - Hello, David.
0:07:42 > 0:07:47Hiya. Caerphilly Castle is haunted by the ghost of the Green Lady.
0:07:47 > 0:07:48And the story goes back to 1268.
0:07:48 > 0:07:52The castle was founded by a man called Gilbert de Clare,
0:07:52 > 0:07:55or Gilbert the Red, who had a lovely wife called Alice.
0:07:55 > 0:07:57And she fell in love with a local Welsh prince.
0:07:57 > 0:08:02Gilbert was so upset about this, he banished her back to France.
0:08:02 > 0:08:04And he had the local Welsh prince killed.
0:08:04 > 0:08:09When she heard the news, she dropped down dead,
0:08:09 > 0:08:11literally dying of a broken heart.
0:08:11 > 0:08:14But it's funny, cos there's a moment in this script,
0:08:14 > 0:08:17which we're filming in this castle, where we all went,
0:08:17 > 0:08:21this is the moment in a horror film where you go, "Don't go down that corridor!"
0:08:21 > 0:08:23- Just don't do it.- Just don't do it.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26PULSATING GROWL
0:08:28 > 0:08:32Run. Run! RUN!
0:08:37 > 0:08:41When writer Matthew Graham created the Flesh on paper,
0:08:41 > 0:08:43he knew his vision could only be
0:08:43 > 0:08:49realised on screen by a combination of CGI and live-action filming.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52For rehearsal, and...action.
0:08:54 > 0:08:59Confidential is in London with the man himself to check out progress.
0:09:01 > 0:09:05Very exciting, because it was a few months ago that I wrote this.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07So I have no idea what you've been doing
0:09:07 > 0:09:09while I've been off doing other things.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12- You've been beavering away in the dark.- Absolutely.
0:09:12 > 0:09:16Well, first things first. This is some of the concept art we did.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19Oh, lord. Is that done on computer? Is it designed on computer?
0:09:19 > 0:09:23- Yes, this was done in Photoshop. - Right, yes.
0:09:23 > 0:09:25So this was everyone chatting about
0:09:25 > 0:09:27what they thought the creature would look like.
0:09:27 > 0:09:31The idea was to make it very white, maybe a bit transparent.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33Lots of veins, and make it quite fleshy.
0:09:33 > 0:09:39I wanted that mixture of a real face and a completely alien body.
0:09:39 > 0:09:41I'm really looking forward to see how they're going to
0:09:41 > 0:09:44put all the special effects together and everything.
0:09:44 > 0:09:46And to see how the monster is all created,
0:09:46 > 0:09:51and how the little dots on my face will be transformed into big, long,
0:09:51 > 0:09:57elongated jaws and things like that, and all my limbs extended.
0:09:57 > 0:09:58'I can't wait!'
0:09:59 > 0:10:01I can grow!
0:10:07 > 0:10:11It might be nice to have a bit more sort of lateral movement.
0:10:11 > 0:10:13It is more kind of a side-to-side.
0:10:14 > 0:10:16- Like this?- Yes.
0:10:16 > 0:10:20We'll take the performance that we get of Jennifer,
0:10:20 > 0:10:23cos her performance is very much these bodily movements.
0:10:23 > 0:10:28And a slight awkwardness to the way that her body is moving.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30Which are all great traits which you can
0:10:30 > 0:10:34sort of pull over into your CGI creation.
0:10:34 > 0:10:38And we'll take that as our inspiration and guide for the way
0:10:38 > 0:10:43that we move and animate the CGI body that we're going to attach to her.
0:10:43 > 0:10:48I've just spent some time with Neil seeing how the Jennifer creature's animated,
0:10:48 > 0:10:50and I'm really excited now,
0:10:50 > 0:10:54cos this is going to be the semi-finished thing in situ.
0:10:54 > 0:10:56So, unleash the Jennifer creature.
0:10:56 > 0:10:58This door doesn't lock!
0:10:58 > 0:11:01Here we go. This is our set. This is a character called Dicken.
0:11:01 > 0:11:05Don't go down that corridor, Dicken. I wouldn't, mate.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08He's going to try and close the door. Here she comes.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11The flashing amber lights, which have to be recreated.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14And this is a greyscale animation. Not finished yet.
0:11:14 > 0:11:17Oh, my word! That is still pretty scary.
0:11:17 > 0:11:21She's getting closer. Get that door closed!
0:11:21 > 0:11:25Ah. I don't think that's going to end well. There's a sofa there.
0:11:25 > 0:11:27I'm going to go and hide behind it.
