0:00:02 > 0:00:06Choral conductor Tim Rhys Evans has a huge challenge on his hands.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08He has handpicked 32 teenagers

0:00:08 > 0:00:13from his Only Boys Aloud choir to take part in a top academy.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15I want to see those boys that were like me, really.

0:00:16 > 0:00:23Boys who had a love of singing, have a need to make music

0:00:23 > 0:00:27and have the potential to do that at a high level.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30On offer the musical education of a lifetime -

0:00:30 > 0:00:32a week's intense training

0:00:32 > 0:00:36at one of Wales' most prestigious private schools.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39The boys have no idea what's in store

0:00:39 > 0:00:44But Tim's planned 13 hour days of singing lessons,

0:00:44 > 0:00:46dance classes and demanding rehearsals.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50So, let's do all four phrases. Ready? So, back at the gym.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54And, at the end of it, a live performance for the paying public.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57It's the first time they've sung in public together.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01So, for them, on the stage is going to be very scary, I think.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05I'm kind of worried, because I don't know all the words at the moment.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08And, on top of choreography, I don't know if I'll remember it all.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Tim's high standards and heavy schedule

0:01:11 > 0:01:15may not fit in with a bunch of high spirited teenagers.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19Why, why, why aren't you watching me?

0:01:19 > 0:01:24Stars of the West End and opera will offer up some last minute home truths.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27It was great. But you may as well be singing the shopping list!

0:01:27 > 0:01:31And there's an early morning wake-up the boys will never forget.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36Can Tim's academy boys

0:01:36 > 0:01:39pull off the biggest choral challenge of their lives?

0:01:44 > 0:01:48It's day one of the week long musical boot camp

0:01:48 > 0:01:52and the boys are settling into their new quarters.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Tim and his team have just seven days to stage a choreographed

0:01:55 > 0:02:01concert of 14 choral pieces, in four different languages.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Some of these boys aren't music readers. Some of them can't read German or Latin.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07It's completely outside their comfort zone.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11With any course like this, you only have a week to put a show on its feet.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15So it's going to be intense and difficult. It's going to be hard work.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18With a paying audience of family, friends

0:02:18 > 0:02:21and dignitaries turning up, Tim's feeling the pressure.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25Yeah, there is a lot of pressure, actually.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27But if you think about that all the time

0:02:27 > 0:02:29you stop doing the job in hand

0:02:29 > 0:02:31which is actually just making sure it works.

0:02:31 > 0:02:36But the boys are starting to wonder what Tim's got in store.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38We don't know nothing about the timetable

0:02:38 > 0:02:40throughout the week.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43It's going to be so intense, people are going to wind people up,

0:02:43 > 0:02:47keep them up at night and things. There may be a few arguments.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50But this doesn't stop them from dreaming.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54- I want Lady Gaga to turn up. - She's not going to turn up!

0:02:54 > 0:02:55You never know.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Don't know what's going to happen, do we?

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Just got to go with an open mind and look forward to it.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03And the other thing they said is there's loads of surprises.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07And we have no idea what those surprises are.

0:03:07 > 0:03:12One thing is for sure, the boys won't be expecting Tim's first announcement of the day.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16There's the Bradenstoke Hall, where we'll be springing a surprise

0:03:16 > 0:03:19on them that we're holding the auditions for the solos today.

0:03:19 > 0:03:24Tim's looking for 14 boys to sing a solo part in the final concert.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27It's a chance for some of them to shine.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29But the news has come as a shock.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30I'm feeling nervous,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33mainly because everyone else is going to be watching

0:03:33 > 0:03:36And I don't really like that.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40It's often better not to give them time to worry and fret.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43So, I'll be looking for somebody that really wants to

0:03:43 > 0:03:46do the solo, somebody who has the vocal ability.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50and also somebody who's not going to buckle under the nerves.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54# How can feel good, when nothing's right? #

0:03:54 > 0:03:59# 525,600 minutes. #

0:03:59 > 0:04:02# Let's celebrate and remember a year in the life of friends.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05# Remember the... #

0:04:05 > 0:04:08The pressure of a public audition is starting to tell.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10# On the way that she... # I can't do it, I can't.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12That's always the danger with auditions,

0:04:12 > 0:04:15what you sing getting that choice right.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19I did say they could sing anything they wanted to, yet some of them chose to sing solos

0:04:19 > 0:04:21from the repertoire that we're doing.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23And I think they would have been better

0:04:23 > 0:04:27if they'd sung something they knew better.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29# All my life.

0:04:29 > 0:04:35- # All my life.- #

0:04:37 > 0:04:39# Hold me, love...#

0:04:39 > 0:04:41Uch a fi!

0:04:41 > 0:04:42Don't worry.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45One of the final notes went off. Didn't quite catch it

0:04:45 > 0:04:49and it was quite frustrating because I thought the rest of the song went pretty well.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51# The truths that she learned...

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Some guys just really nailed it.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57Ben Bateman blew everyone away. Just, "Wow, where did that come from?"

0:04:57 > 0:05:05# Or the way that she di-i-i-i-ed! #

0:05:07 > 0:05:10I think it's worse singing in front of a small group

0:05:10 > 0:05:11than a large group.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13You can see everybody staring at you.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16It's more nerve wracking. But I think it was OK.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20# When your heart has expired...

0:05:20 > 0:05:24That's what's great about holding these auditions is the fact

0:05:24 > 0:05:27that your own pre-conceptions are challenged, sometimes.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34And you are surprised at what they can achieve.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38And it makes you look at the group in a different way.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40With every boy auditioned,

0:05:40 > 0:05:45Tim and his team gather to decide on the solo stars for the concert.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48Solo one for Rhys Powell. Solo three for Josh Hughes.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55After long deliberations,

0:05:55 > 0:05:59Tim calls a meeting to reveal his decision on the solo parts.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05Just got to give them results now, which is never easy for me.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09I just want everyone to be very happy and have a nice time.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11But that's the nature of the beast.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Don't be too disappointed, just know that you did well.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18For Mama who Bore Me. Gareth, that solo, please.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22And In Seasons Of Love, the tenor solo is Ben Bateman.

0:06:22 > 0:06:23Thank you very much.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26What stops me sleeping sometimes is realising that

0:06:26 > 0:06:30the responsibility we have to these young lads is massive.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33All too often, nowadays, it's just all about,

0:06:33 > 0:06:35"Oh, yes, he's got a lovely voice."

0:06:35 > 0:06:39"I'll just go on the X Factor and that's me set for life."

0:06:39 > 0:06:41And it's a very unhealthy culture.

0:06:41 > 0:06:46The idea that you have to work towards something and hopefully that's going to lead somewhere.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50But, even if it doesn't, you'll be a much better individual at the end of the day.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54You'll have done something with your life that you didn't think you could do.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57With a lot to get through before Sunday,

0:06:57 > 0:07:00Tim's invited a star from the West End

0:07:00 > 0:07:03to give the boys a masterclass to remember.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06So please give it up, boys, for Connie Fisher.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11Because of our connections within the music industry,

0:07:11 > 0:07:15it's bribe some mates to come in and do some masterclasses with the boys.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17Hi, guys.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21It really makes the boys feel special, when they can meet somebody that they recognise.

0:07:21 > 0:07:27# Before I change my mind! #

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Well, thanks, Tom. You've got the job!

0:07:43 > 0:07:48It's difficult for me to sit here and say anything bad about the performance.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- How old are you? - Seventeen.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54OK. So, big career ahead of you.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57The thing is, it's a rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00What I would say is perhaps there's more energy within his character.

0:08:00 > 0:08:05I want you to look exhausted. He's giving himself up.

0:08:05 > 0:08:11# Then, I was inspired... #

0:08:11 > 0:08:13Tom. Oh, what a glorious voice.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17And he had that poppy inflection, which is fine for rock opera.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19I can see him being that part.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21As long as he commits to everything he does,

0:08:21 > 0:08:25whether that be a thought intention or whether that be a gesture.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29If he wants to do a gesture, he sometimes did a half gesture

0:08:29 > 0:08:31which was, like, a bit eggy.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34# Nail me to your cross! #

0:08:34 > 0:08:38So, send him to Drama School with people who know what they're talking about

0:08:38 > 0:08:40and he'll be like John Barrowman.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42"I think I'm going to do an action, no, I'm not doing it."

0:08:42 > 0:08:45"Am I doing the cross? No, I'm not doing the cross."

0:08:45 > 0:08:49You have to commit to it. If you're going to do it, do it with energy

0:08:49 > 0:08:53and feel the energy going through you. And don't be afraid of looking silly.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56# Nail me to your cross!

0:08:56 > 0:09:01# And break me, bleed me, beat me. #

0:09:03 > 0:09:07Ben's up next, in line for some good advice.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09I think the masterclass went really well.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11I sang the anthem from Chess.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15I didn't know much about the character who sung the song in the show.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17So, she told me about the character.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19She said it went well, so I was glad.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21You're a soldier, aren't you?

0:09:21 > 0:09:27Singing about your country. It's very patriotic, anthemic.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31It's an anthem. And I think you need to earn the right to sing those big notes,

0:09:31 > 0:09:35as your character. And I want to believe your passion for your country.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40I love Ben. He was very pliable, as a performer.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44I told him to do something and he'd take it on board.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48And I saw his confusion between his relationship, and then his country.

0:09:48 > 0:09:50And I saw a soldier in him, for a second.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53And that's what I want to believe, as an audience.

0:09:53 > 0:09:54And I did.

0:09:54 > 0:10:02# My heart... #

0:10:05 > 0:10:09'The boys asked me lots of questions about what it's like to be in a musical

0:10:09 > 0:10:12'and one thing I could answer,

0:10:12 > 0:10:16it's exhausting, and I think they've probably had a taster for that at this academy.

0:10:16 > 0:10:21In the concert, Tim's expecting the boys to sing without any musical copies.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25The onus is on them to become note and word perfect.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29We've jam packed this week full.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32The schedule has been full of all sorts of activities for the boys

0:10:32 > 0:10:36and today we felt that maybe actually what they needed

0:10:36 > 0:10:40is a bit of own time when they can just maybe learn some words.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43We are trying to learn our words in our spare time

0:10:43 > 0:10:46but a lot of things get in the way.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51Well, I mean after twelve hours rehearsing a day, singing non-stop,

0:10:51 > 0:10:53when we get one or two hours free time,

0:10:53 > 0:10:55we don't really want to spend it singing.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58I know we should learn our words but none of us really want to.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03'I've put on the board, "free time/word learning"

0:11:03 > 0:11:06'because in the rehearsal straight after that

0:11:06 > 0:11:08'I will be making sure that they do know their words

0:11:08 > 0:11:11'and if they don't, I will be singling them out

0:11:11 > 0:11:13'in front of the whole group.'

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Tim has shared a stage with stars such as Katherine Jenkins

0:11:16 > 0:11:18and Bryn Terfel.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20His standards are on the high side.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23And I'm expecting eyes here, not there.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27OK. The most gorgeous piece we're doing now, Lieber.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30The first full rehearsal gets off to a bad start.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34OK, sit down. James needs the toilet.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40THEY SING

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Listen to that C. Starting...

0:11:42 > 0:11:45That's not helping. It's happening here.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47THEY SING

0:11:47 > 0:11:48Rubbish opening.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51'I think we struggle at the moment on the Gregorian chant.'

0:11:51 > 0:11:54It's not English, I think it's Latin.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56'So we've got those words to learn,

0:11:56 > 0:11:58'we've got the tune to go on top... It's very tricky.'

0:11:58 > 0:12:03THEY SING

0:12:05 > 0:12:09I think if we all put a bit of work into learning the words now

0:12:09 > 0:12:12and concentrate and watch Tim when he's conducting us,

0:12:12 > 0:12:14we'll be just fine.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17Why, why, why aren't you watching me?

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Come on, boys.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Sorry to lose it.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23You're doing very well,

0:12:23 > 0:12:26but if you'd only just get your heads out of your copies,

0:12:26 > 0:12:28we could make music.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31'I lost it a little bit which I try not to do but...'

0:12:31 > 0:12:34it was mild...ish.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37But I just get frustrated when they don't look at me.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42'I think there're a lot of boys out there in the academy

0:12:42 > 0:12:46'who are really serious about wanting to do this as a career

0:12:46 > 0:12:48'or certainly try and get into music college

0:12:48 > 0:12:50'and this is nothing compared to that.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54'Am I putting too much pressure on them?

0:12:54 > 0:12:57'No, I don't think I am.

0:12:57 > 0:13:02'They're here. Let's make the most of every moment.'

0:13:11 > 0:13:14It's 6am. Tim's idea of an early start

0:13:14 > 0:13:15isn't the same as everybody else's.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18HORN BLARES

0:13:18 > 0:13:21WHISTLES BLOWN

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Come on, guys. Get up!

0:13:24 > 0:13:26Come on! Let's go.

0:13:26 > 0:13:31CACOPHONY OF SHOUTS, WHISTLING AND BANGING

0:13:39 > 0:13:42There's a punishing physical workout ahead of the boys

0:13:42 > 0:13:46to get them working as a team ahead of the final concert.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50Here we go. This time we're going for a hundred, boys. Keep it going!

0:13:50 > 0:13:54It's not about the singing, it's about the mentality.

0:13:54 > 0:13:58You have to put the work in. If you've got a goal in life, you have to work hard to get there

0:13:58 > 0:14:02and this is demonstrating, nothing's easy in life. Got to work for it.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04I'm sure the boys think I'm a dictator

0:14:04 > 0:14:05but it's really good for them

0:14:05 > 0:14:08and secretly I think they're enjoying it.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11Oh, it was worse than being in a games lesson.

0:14:11 > 0:14:16I'd rather have double games than do this ever again. It was horrible.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- Coming to assassinate me? - You loved it.- It was lush(!)

0:14:19 > 0:14:20Who are we?

0:14:20 > 0:14:22ALL: Boys Aloud!

0:14:23 > 0:14:25It's three days in,

0:14:25 > 0:14:28there's still a lot to do before Sunday's concert

0:14:28 > 0:14:30and the heavy schedule is having an effect.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32THEY YAWN

0:14:32 > 0:14:37'This is a really intensive course. They're singing for eight, nine hours a day.'

0:14:37 > 0:14:40You really have to look after yourself if you're not used to it.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43'Lots of people are getting a bit ill'

0:14:43 > 0:14:45with colds and losing their voices and stuff.

0:14:45 > 0:14:50There's been sickness and diarrhoea bug. There's colds going around.

0:14:50 > 0:14:55When you see a chorister not put their hand over their mouth and they're coughing and you think,

0:14:55 > 0:15:00"Oh, God, there's another eight of them going to come down with it by Sunday."

0:15:00 > 0:15:02Basically, I've got no voice left any more.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05VOICE CROAKS

0:15:06 > 0:15:09It's a constant worry if you'll have a voice by Sunday.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12And who better to look after a croaky voice than Mam?

0:15:12 > 0:15:15Even if she's travelled 50 miles to do it.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19Ben Bateman's mum Sue has turned up with some unexpected rations.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22I've brought Ben his money because he's run out of money.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25His Manuka honey which he always carries with him.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27The only reason he asked for his Manuka honey

0:15:27 > 0:15:31was, "I got a bad chest, Mum, and I'm coughing and I'm sneezing, Mam."

0:15:32 > 0:15:37His mum's visit has left Ben thinking about the final concert.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41My dad has struggled to come to performances because he's ill

0:15:41 > 0:15:43and the fact the performances are far from where I live.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47It'll be special because he's never come to watch one

0:15:47 > 0:15:51and if he's there, it'll just make me want to do better than I already am doing.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54ALL: # Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

0:15:54 > 0:15:57# Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... #

0:15:59 > 0:16:01As the boys drag themselves into the final 48 hours,

0:16:01 > 0:16:06Tim's choreographer's arrived to get this tired show on the road.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08Could you just surge forward and see if you can...?

0:16:08 > 0:16:11You want to try and break through these...

0:16:11 > 0:16:14Nick Ashton has worked with Tim for several years

0:16:14 > 0:16:15on many of his top shows.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18There's about twelve pieces in the whole programme.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Some of them will be simply staged

0:16:20 > 0:16:23and they'll just be standing and making some shapes.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25Some of them need a real kind of musical staging.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27That's going to be a tough call.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29I think the boys are quite tired

0:16:29 > 0:16:31cos they've already been working so hard.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33This is another layer to put on the top.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37I'm kind of worried because I don't know all the words at the moment.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39On top of choreography, I don't know

0:16:39 > 0:16:41if I'm going to be able to remember it all.

0:16:43 > 0:16:47This morning, we've got another masterclass.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50The famous Welsh tenor Wynne Evans is coming in this morning.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54Also known from a certain well-known insurance comparison website.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58Please give it up for Mr Wynne Evans. APPLAUSE

0:17:01 > 0:17:02'Wynne's a tenor from Carmarthen.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05'A lot of these boys come from that very part of the world'

0:17:05 > 0:17:09and he's made a success of it as a singer. So why not some of these boys?

0:17:09 > 0:17:13'I think that's a very important message to send.'

0:17:13 > 0:17:16HE SINGS

0:17:20 > 0:17:22APPLAUSE

0:17:24 > 0:17:28I am incredibly rude, but I mean it in the nicest possible way, OK?

0:17:28 > 0:17:30All of a sudden, right, you're singing you go,

0:17:30 > 0:17:36# Stars out in the darkness a fugitive running... #

0:17:36 > 0:17:39Why would you do that, it's mental?

0:17:39 > 0:17:40You don't need to do it, OK?

0:17:40 > 0:17:42'You've got to be cruel to be kind.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44'The type of calibre this guy is singing at.'

0:17:44 > 0:17:47If he's bringing in and he's bringing his own skills

0:17:47 > 0:17:48and things he's learnt,

0:17:48 > 0:17:51I think anything is efficiently helping us, you know?

0:17:51 > 0:17:56# Some enchanted evening

0:17:56 > 0:18:00# When you find your true love... #

0:18:00 > 0:18:05'He's really critical of the singing and he really tore the piece apart.'

0:18:05 > 0:18:07But, I mean, it was good, you did sit back thinking

0:18:07 > 0:18:10you're not as good as you thought you were.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12Very good, you've got a beautiful voice.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15But you may as well be singing the shopping list from Sainsbury's.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17It's a bit,

0:18:17 > 0:18:20# Some enchanted evening... #

0:18:20 > 0:18:23Malfunction, malfunction.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26'I'm quite tough with them. Some think I'm a bit too rude,

0:18:26 > 0:18:29'but the industry is a very tough industry.'

0:18:29 > 0:18:32'If I come up here and say, "Oh, that's lovely.

0:18:32 > 0:18:34"Yes, you're doing a very lovely job there."

0:18:34 > 0:18:37I'm not doing them any favours.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39# Some enchanted evening... #

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Don't do it. It's a very old-fashioned way

0:18:41 > 0:18:43of singing anyway now, yeah.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45# Some enchanted evening. #

0:18:45 > 0:18:47Think about what you're saying.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49'When someone tells you something

0:18:49 > 0:18:51'and they say it blunt, as it is, it hits home.'

0:18:51 > 0:18:55It's better to be like that than, "Oh, you're all right."

0:18:55 > 0:18:58Just tell you straight where the problem is and you can work on it.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08I don't know if you were signing it for the deaf

0:19:08 > 0:19:11or whether you were just... There's a lot of this going on.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14I just wanted to touch the things, you know?

0:19:14 > 0:19:18It's lovely right, but either do emotion or don't do it.

0:19:18 > 0:19:20'I was absolutely petrified.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22'Before I sung the solo I felt sick.'

0:19:22 > 0:19:24You just forget that they want you to be good.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27They don't want you to be bad, they want to help you.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29# Some enchanted evening... #

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Keep it spinning the whole time.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35# You may see a stranger... #

0:19:35 > 0:19:37'This is their magic moment for some of them.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40'The penny will finally drop.'

0:19:40 > 0:19:42You have to keep plugging

0:19:42 > 0:19:45in the hope that the penny will drop for all of them.

0:19:45 > 0:19:50# Once you have found her Never let her go

0:19:50 > 0:19:55# Once you have found her

0:19:55 > 0:20:04# Never let her go. #

0:20:04 > 0:20:07Good, good, lad.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10'I think the last few days of the Academy'

0:20:10 > 0:20:13will be really hectic now, making sure everything's perfect.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16The dances are perfect and the timing's perfect.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19I think Tim will start getting stressed if we don't listen to him.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22So I think we really need to knuckle down and concentrate.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25It's the day of the big concert, and it's the first time Tim

0:20:25 > 0:20:28and the boys have run through the entire performance.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30< LOUD CREAK

0:20:30 > 0:20:32LAUGHTER

0:20:32 > 0:20:34Beans again?

0:20:34 > 0:20:36Let's go, please.

0:20:39 > 0:20:44THE CHOIR SING

0:20:47 > 0:20:49Good, just have another go, Tim.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52It's not boring, that just sounded a bit boring.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54It's got to be love.

0:20:54 > 0:20:58'It's D-day. It's the first ever concert of the Academy.'

0:20:58 > 0:21:02So... Oh...

0:21:02 > 0:21:07I had the worst night's sleep you could imagine, appalling.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10'There have been times during the week when I haven't enjoyed it

0:21:10 > 0:21:14'because it's felt like a real uphill climb.'

0:21:14 > 0:21:17- Sorry we do need to go back. - Where do you get your thoughts from?

0:21:17 > 0:21:19'I've learned a lot of lessons this week.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22'We've gone into this feet first, in many ways.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24'There are some things we'd do differently.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27'I think what I've had confirmed'

0:21:27 > 0:21:33is that an idea that was once just that, an idea, was right.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36Everyone turns in. Go, go, go. The four soloists move.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40'Had you asked us a week ago was this a little bit ambitious then

0:21:40 > 0:21:42'we probably would all have said yes.'

0:21:42 > 0:21:45But seeing how we've come together over the week

0:21:45 > 0:21:48with our team building and just learning all the pieces.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50I think it's not ambitious. I think we can pull it off.

0:21:50 > 0:21:55'Everyone today is feeling a bit nervous about the concert.'

0:21:55 > 0:21:59But they're also, in a way, sad that we're leaving everyone.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02- I'm sad that we're leaving everyone. - I'm sad we're leaving.

0:22:02 > 0:22:06# Oh, love... #

0:22:06 > 0:22:11'I think the boys have grown massively during this process.'

0:22:11 > 0:22:14# Yeah, oh... #

0:22:14 > 0:22:18'It's about so much more than singing and I have to really watch myself'

0:22:18 > 0:22:21in the final thing of the show because it's...

0:22:21 > 0:22:26They sing with so much passion and it's, um...

0:22:26 > 0:22:29it's...it's really lovely to see.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31because, um...

0:22:31 > 0:22:35I'm getting so emotional about some singing.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40These guys are really proving that there is optimism.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44There is aspiration, and in a part of the world I care about deeply,

0:22:44 > 0:22:47it's difficult not to end up a blubbering wreck.

0:22:47 > 0:22:53# I'll cover you, oh... #

0:22:53 > 0:23:00- ALL:- Oo-o-o-oh!

0:23:00 > 0:23:04Good, well done. Well done, very good.

0:23:04 > 0:23:06As the paying audience starts to arrive,

0:23:06 > 0:23:10Tim's also got an emotional bunch of boys on his hands.

0:23:10 > 0:23:15This is the last performance we will do on the Academy weekend.

0:23:15 > 0:23:16It's going to be...

0:23:16 > 0:23:19Well, I don't know. It's going to be sad.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21It's going to be really sad.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24People have got a sense of "it's all over".

0:23:24 > 0:23:27I might have a little tear in my eye when we finish

0:23:27 > 0:23:30because of all the hard work we've done together

0:23:30 > 0:23:32and it's just going to go straight down to nothing.

0:23:32 > 0:23:35I'm feeling quite excited at the moment, actually.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37The Academy's definitely given me

0:23:37 > 0:23:40more confidence to go for music and theatre or whatever.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44The highlight of a week of intense preparation is now just moments away.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47And it's good news for tenor Ben Bateman.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50His father has made it for the big performance.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53'I'm excited about my parents coming.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57'They haven't come to watch an Only Boys Aloud performance yet

0:23:57 > 0:23:59'because they're so far away.'

0:23:59 > 0:24:01It makes me want to try and do my best

0:24:01 > 0:24:03cos they're two people I don't want to mess in front of.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06The croaky voices are gone

0:24:06 > 0:24:09and Tim wants the start of the concert to make a big impact.

0:24:09 > 0:24:15The boys file in slowly, performing a Gregorian chant.

0:24:15 > 0:24:19THEY CHANT

0:24:35 > 0:24:38I think I'll be nervous walking on to the stage.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41Probably about halfway through the first song

0:24:41 > 0:24:43the adrenaline will start and the nerves will go away.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45I'll just feel comfortable

0:24:45 > 0:24:47like I always do when I start singing on stage.

0:24:47 > 0:24:52# 500, 25,000, 600 minutes

0:24:52 > 0:24:56# How do you measure a life of a woman or a man?

0:24:56 > 0:25:02# In truth that she learned or times that he cried

0:25:02 > 0:25:07# Bridges he burned or the way that she died

0:25:07 > 0:25:11# It's time now to sing out the story never ends

0:25:11 > 0:25:15# Let's celebrate remember a year in the life of friends.

0:25:15 > 0:25:19# Remember to love

0:25:19 > 0:25:24# Remember to love

0:25:24 > 0:25:29# Remember to love

0:25:29 > 0:25:35# Measure in love

0:25:35 > 0:25:38# Blah, blah, blah blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

0:25:38 > 0:25:41# Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

0:25:41 > 0:25:46# Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

0:25:46 > 0:25:48# Blah, blah, blah, blah... #

0:25:48 > 0:25:51'We've been here for a week and got to know each other so well.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54'We started off in a room all together'

0:25:54 > 0:25:56where we had our first rehearsal and now we've ended it.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59As it will be tonight on that stage with all of our mentors.

0:25:59 > 0:26:03It will be absolutely amazing. I'll probably shed a tear.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07# One life of mine

0:26:18 > 0:26:23'that is going to continue to enrich the lives of young people

0:26:23 > 0:26:26'across South Wales, UK, I don't know.'

0:26:26 > 0:26:29But what is deeply, deeply important to me

0:26:29 > 0:26:33is the fact that the boys have a positive experience

0:26:33 > 0:26:35and that their work, their hard work pays off

0:26:35 > 0:26:39and that they can feel that they've done something special.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42# Oh

0:26:42 > 0:26:49# I can feel, yeah

0:28:20 > 0:28:22I've said this so many times,

0:28:22 > 0:28:24but it is about so much more than singing.
