0:00:05 > 0:00:07Welcome to the village of Portmeirion.
0:00:07 > 0:00:11It is September 2015 and 10,000 people are here enjoying the sun,
0:00:11 > 0:00:15the scenery and the sounds of the unique Festival No 6.
0:00:27 > 0:00:30We are showcasing performances from some of the best unsigned artists
0:00:30 > 0:00:32coming out of Wales.
0:00:40 > 0:00:43The word is spreading about this event
0:00:43 > 0:00:47and the list of musicians, comedians and writers gets longer each year.
0:00:47 > 0:00:50We've been here in Portmeirion this sunny September weekend
0:00:50 > 0:00:53filming some great live sessions from Horizons bands,
0:00:53 > 0:00:56Welsh-based acts who write and perform their own music.
0:00:57 > 0:01:01The Horizons project gives a platform to 12 upcoming acts
0:01:01 > 0:01:03from across Wales.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06So, let's start with the first of our Horizons artists who have been
0:01:06 > 0:01:10playing to the festivalgoers just through here in the Village Green.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16This is Cut Ribbons with Clouds.
0:01:16 > 0:01:17# Hey
0:01:21 > 0:01:22# Hey
0:01:27 > 0:01:28# Hey
0:01:33 > 0:01:35# Sewn in the seams
0:01:35 > 0:01:37# Of my enemies
0:01:37 > 0:01:40# When the skies are grey
0:01:43 > 0:01:46# We won't make a sound
0:01:46 > 0:01:48# As we blow the clouds
0:01:48 > 0:01:51# And the cobwebs away
0:01:53 > 0:01:54# Hey
0:01:54 > 0:01:56# Your electric trance
0:01:56 > 0:01:58# My electric prance
0:01:58 > 0:02:01# We are the new undrenched
0:02:03 > 0:02:06# We are the echo
0:02:06 > 0:02:09# In the hands of a distant land
0:02:09 > 0:02:11# Where we're crowned kings instead
0:02:14 > 0:02:17# Saw all the colours with you
0:02:17 > 0:02:19# Kaleidoscopes with a view
0:02:19 > 0:02:22# Caught everything that you do
0:02:22 > 0:02:25# Cos that's what lovers should do
0:02:25 > 0:02:27# Saw all the colours with you
0:02:27 > 0:02:30# Kaleidoscopes with a view
0:02:30 > 0:02:32# Caught everything that you do
0:02:32 > 0:02:35# Cos that's what lovers should do
0:02:35 > 0:02:36# Hey
0:02:40 > 0:02:42# Hey... #
0:02:45 > 0:02:49Clouds is a track... It's really summery, isn't it?
0:02:49 > 0:02:51It's very...
0:02:51 > 0:02:54It's one of the first synth sounds that we did.
0:02:54 > 0:02:58We recorded it in our studio back in Llanelli.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01It's a bit of an exploration into where
0:03:01 > 0:03:04we think the band is going, you know, that kind of direction,
0:03:04 > 0:03:07that big synth lead and kind of soundscape.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10# Two hands who know each other
0:03:10 > 0:03:12# From under the cover... #
0:03:12 > 0:03:14Everything is written with harmonies in mind.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17Don't get me wrong, sometimes we split the vocals in verses
0:03:17 > 0:03:20and things where Lluan will take some vocals then I'll take
0:03:20 > 0:03:22the second half of the verse.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24But really, everything is written with harmony in mind,
0:03:24 > 0:03:27because that's kind of what we listen to a lot.
0:03:27 > 0:03:31We listen to a lot of Fleetwood Mac and things and...trying to do it
0:03:31 > 0:03:36in a different way. That's the ethos we're trying to convey, you know?
0:03:36 > 0:03:38Without the turmoil!
0:03:38 > 0:03:41# Saw all the colours with you
0:03:41 > 0:03:43# Kaleidoscopes with a view
0:03:43 > 0:03:46# Caught everything that you do
0:03:46 > 0:03:49# Cos that's what lovers should do
0:03:49 > 0:03:51# Saw all the colours with you
0:03:51 > 0:03:54# Kaleidoscopes with a view
0:03:54 > 0:03:57# Caught everything that you do
0:03:57 > 0:03:59# Cos that's what lovers should do
0:03:59 > 0:04:02# Saw all the colours with you
0:04:02 > 0:04:05# Kaleidoscopes with a view
0:04:05 > 0:04:08# Caught everything that you do
0:04:08 > 0:04:10# Cos that's what lovers should do. #
0:04:10 > 0:04:11Thank you.
0:04:13 > 0:04:17Cut Ribbons were one of the 12 bands chosen at the start of 2015
0:04:17 > 0:04:20to be Horizons artists.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23The year started with a base camp in west Wales where the bands get
0:04:23 > 0:04:26to meet each other for the first time.
0:04:26 > 0:04:28They also hear from industry experts who give them
0:04:28 > 0:04:33advice about playing live, touring, publicity, radio and social media.
0:04:33 > 0:04:37So that's my job, to sort of forge a relationship with journalists.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40So I have a very good idea of what those kind of people are into...
0:04:40 > 0:04:44Horizons artists can be bands or solo performers,
0:04:44 > 0:04:46singing in English or in Welsh.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48Or both, just like our next performer,
0:04:48 > 0:04:50singer-songwriter Aled Rheon.
0:04:51 > 0:04:53# First there was pain
0:04:54 > 0:04:56# It hurt a lot
0:04:57 > 0:05:03# The pain was saved by the sight begot
0:05:03 > 0:05:06# And there were screams
0:05:06 > 0:05:07# And bated breath
0:05:09 > 0:05:10# Smiles were smiled
0:05:12 > 0:05:13# Clocks were set
0:05:19 > 0:05:21# Breathe in, breathe...
0:05:22 > 0:05:24# Out
0:05:29 > 0:05:31# First she crawled
0:05:32 > 0:05:34# Next she walked
0:05:34 > 0:05:37# You run around all day
0:05:38 > 0:05:44# Cover new ground in swathes and eat your greens
0:05:44 > 0:05:45# Reach new heights
0:05:47 > 0:05:51# Imagine a million worlds and jump inside
0:05:57 > 0:05:59# Breathe in, breathe...
0:06:01 > 0:06:02# Out
0:06:02 > 0:06:05# Just remember to wrap up warm
0:06:05 > 0:06:08# And don't forget your home
0:06:08 > 0:06:10# And call me when you get there... #
0:06:16 > 0:06:18It's called Wrap Up Warm.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20It's a favourite of my mother's and it's about growing up.
0:06:20 > 0:06:22It's quite an emotional song,
0:06:22 > 0:06:26I guess it's a little bit based on my upbringing, I guess,
0:06:26 > 0:06:29in a way, cos that's the only thing I could refer back to.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32But it's mainly about, you know, the stages that people go through
0:06:32 > 0:06:35when they're trying to find themselves as we grow up.
0:06:39 > 0:06:40# Breathe in, breathe...
0:06:42 > 0:06:44# Out
0:06:44 > 0:06:47# Just remember to wrap up warm
0:06:47 > 0:06:50# And don't forget your home
0:06:50 > 0:06:52# And call me when you get there
0:06:54 > 0:06:57# Just remember to wrap up warm
0:06:57 > 0:06:59# And don't forget your home
0:06:59 > 0:07:02# And call me when you get there
0:07:07 > 0:07:09# Find your feet
0:07:10 > 0:07:12# Or take flight
0:07:13 > 0:07:18# It's a big world out there so take a bite
0:07:19 > 0:07:20# Find the one
0:07:22 > 0:07:25# Hold on tight
0:07:25 > 0:07:27# Future's pulling
0:07:28 > 0:07:30# Clocks are ticking
0:07:36 > 0:07:37# Breathe in, breathe...
0:07:39 > 0:07:40# Out
0:07:40 > 0:07:43# Just remember to wrap up warm
0:07:44 > 0:07:46# And don't forget your home
0:07:47 > 0:07:50# And call me when you get there. #
0:07:55 > 0:07:59This is Wales Unsigned, showcasing some of the best new Welsh music.
0:07:59 > 0:08:05And next up on the Bandstand stage at Festival No 6, this is Violet Skies.
0:08:08 > 0:08:10# Got blood on my hands
0:08:10 > 0:08:13# And there's some on yours too
0:08:15 > 0:08:16# Hmm
0:08:19 > 0:08:22# Now we're in this together
0:08:22 > 0:08:24# What are we going to do?
0:08:26 > 0:08:27# Hmm
0:08:29 > 0:08:32# I've learned from my mistakes
0:08:34 > 0:08:39# And they hurt me every day
0:08:41 > 0:08:44# And now you've done the same
0:08:45 > 0:08:48# And there's a darker shade of grey
0:08:48 > 0:08:52# A darker shade of grey
0:08:52 > 0:08:55# You can't have her
0:08:55 > 0:08:57# You should walk away
0:08:57 > 0:09:00# Cos you can't keep me
0:09:00 > 0:09:03# Any other way
0:09:03 > 0:09:06# And you don't need her
0:09:06 > 0:09:08# She is not the one
0:09:08 > 0:09:11# Who will hold you
0:09:11 > 0:09:13# When the lightning comes
0:09:13 > 0:09:16# So when the lightning comes, baby
0:09:16 > 0:09:19# And you're screaming out, "Save me"
0:09:19 > 0:09:22# Remember that my soul is yours
0:09:22 > 0:09:24# Remember that I love you more
0:09:24 > 0:09:27# So when the lightning comes, baby
0:09:27 > 0:09:30# And you're screaming out, "Save me"
0:09:30 > 0:09:33# Remember that my soul is yours
0:09:33 > 0:09:38# Remember that I love you more
0:09:39 > 0:09:42# Can't sleep at night
0:09:42 > 0:09:44# Well, honey, I can't either
0:09:44 > 0:09:47# No, I can't either
0:09:50 > 0:09:53# We've got to figure this out
0:09:53 > 0:09:56# Before the dark gets deeper
0:09:56 > 0:09:58# No, no
0:09:58 > 0:10:01# No
0:10:01 > 0:10:04# Can we shake off the shame?

0:10:08 > 0:10:12# This darker shade of grey
0:10:12 > 0:10:14# You can't have her
0:10:14 > 0:10:17# You should walk away
0:10:17 > 0:10:20# Cos you can't keep me
0:10:20 > 0:10:23# Any other way
0:10:23 > 0:10:26# And you don't need her
0:10:26 > 0:10:28# She is not the one
0:10:28 > 0:10:31# Who will hold you
0:10:31 > 0:10:33# When the lightning comes

0:17:04 > 0:17:07Watching Mellt during their performance
0:17:07 > 0:17:10was Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, so what does he think of the festival?
0:17:10 > 0:17:13This is my second time at Festival No 6.
0:17:13 > 0:17:16It's in beautiful Portmeirion, near Porthmadog, and it's just
0:17:16 > 0:17:18a beautiful part of the world and it's a beautiful festival.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20There's always a great atmosphere,
0:17:20 > 0:17:22real excitement in the air when you come here, I think.
0:17:22 > 0:17:24So there's loads to see and, you know,
0:17:24 > 0:17:27a lot of the daytime stuff, the talks and the sessions that they do
0:17:27 > 0:17:31in the day are really interesting, I think, as well as the bands.
0:17:31 > 0:17:33Enjoyed watching Mellt on the Bandstand,
0:17:33 > 0:17:35the Horizons Bandstand over there.
0:17:35 > 0:17:36Seen them a couple of times now.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46I haven't seen her before, and Aled Rheon, you know. And Cut Ribbons.
0:17:46 > 0:17:48The Gorwelion Stage is fantastic, I think,
0:17:48 > 0:17:52in terms of seeing new Welsh talent and bringing them to festivals.
0:17:54 > 0:17:58Next up, a band who had an incredibly busy weekend at Festival No 6,

0:18:14 > 0:18:16# I sharpen them to prepare myself
0:18:16 > 0:18:20# For when my thoughts arrive on my tongue and go
0:18:20 > 0:18:22# I grind my teeth when I'm making love

0:18:45 > 0:18:49I haven't had so much fun playing a gig for a really, really long time.
0:18:49 > 0:18:51Tell us a little bit about the song.
0:18:51 > 0:18:53It's just about my problem, I grind my teeth quite a bit
0:18:53 > 0:18:56and scare people at night-time with these...
0:18:56 > 0:18:58I don't know how I make it, but...
0:18:58 > 0:19:01I've controlled it by now but I used to make loud noises
0:19:01 > 0:19:04while grinding my teeth and, like, "I don't know how that's possible."
0:19:04 > 0:19:07It's like your teeth are having a boogie and trying to pop out of you.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09Yes, exactly that.
0:19:09 > 0:19:12# Just the way I roll
0:19:12 > 0:19:15# I grind my teeth when I'm sleeping
0:19:15 > 0:19:18# I'll grind my teeth when I'm old
0:19:20 > 0:19:22# Is this the way you want it?
0:19:22 > 0:19:23# No
0:19:23 > 0:19:25# Is this the way you like it?
0:19:25 > 0:19:26# I don't think so
0:19:26 > 0:19:28# Is there a way to stop it?
0:19:28 > 0:19:29# No
0:19:29 > 0:19:31# It's just the way, it's the way
0:19:31 > 0:19:32# It's the function in me
0:19:32 > 0:19:34# Be honest
0:19:34 > 0:19:35# Oh
0:19:35 > 0:19:37# Is this the way you like it?
0:19:37 > 0:19:38# No
0:19:38 > 0:19:39# Is there a way to stop it?
0:19:39 > 0:19:40# No
0:19:40 > 0:19:42# It's just the way, it's the way
0:19:42 > 0:19:44# It's the function in me... #
0:19:44 > 0:19:47Heledd, there was a new concept brought into
0:19:47 > 0:19:49the HMS Morris show this weekend.
0:19:49 > 0:19:53Yeah, we thought, this is the last of our festivals for the summer
0:19:53 > 0:19:56so we thought we'd go full-on and do it.
0:19:56 > 0:19:58So I rounded up some friends and made them
0:19:58 > 0:20:01learn some dance moves and put them in costume, just made them
0:20:01 > 0:20:03do a dance routine through our set.
0:20:03 > 0:20:06I think it worked out, people seemed to enjoy it, so, yeah.
0:20:06 > 0:20:08# Is this the way you want it?
0:20:08 > 0:20:09# No
0:20:09 > 0:20:11# Is this the way you like it?
0:20:11 > 0:20:12# I don't think so
0:20:12 > 0:20:14# Is there a way to stop it?
0:20:14 > 0:20:15# No
0:20:15 > 0:20:17# It's just the way, it's the way
0:20:17 > 0:20:18# It's the function in me
0:20:18 > 0:20:20# Be honest
0:20:20 > 0:20:21# Oh
0:20:21 > 0:20:23# Is this the way you like it?
0:20:23 > 0:20:24# No
0:20:24 > 0:20:25# Is there a way to stop it?
0:20:25 > 0:20:26# No
0:20:26 > 0:20:28# It's just the way, it's the way
0:20:28 > 0:20:30# It's the function in me
0:20:30 > 0:20:31# Be honest
0:20:31 > 0:20:32# Oh
0:20:32 > 0:20:34# Is this the way you like it?
0:20:34 > 0:20:35# No
0:20:35 > 0:20:37# Is there a way to stop it?
0:20:37 > 0:20:38# No
0:20:38 > 0:20:40# It's just the way, it's the way
0:20:40 > 0:20:42# It's the function in me. #
0:20:55 > 0:20:58Thank you very much for coming and we'll see you again soon.
0:20:58 > 0:21:01We've been HMS Morris.
0:21:01 > 0:21:05Staying on the Dwyryd Estuary now but hopping across to the other side
0:21:05 > 0:21:08and looking back at Portmeirion village, we filmed this
0:21:08 > 0:21:12special performance with another of our Horizons artists, Hannah Grace.
0:21:14 > 0:21:18# Tell me how to be like you
0:21:23 > 0:21:26# Live my life as someone new
0:21:29 > 0:21:34# Cos every day the same pain begins to feel OK
0:21:37 > 0:21:42# And every night I close my eyes and it's there again
0:21:45 > 0:21:49# Down on the floor, cut to the bone
0:21:49 > 0:21:53# Keep on breaking when you're broke
0:21:53 > 0:21:55# And time never heals
0:21:55 > 0:21:59# It just seems to make it worse
0:22:00 > 0:22:04# Oh, it's got to make you wonder
0:22:04 > 0:22:07# How it's supposed to make you stronger
0:22:11 > 0:22:15# I guess I have to wait in line
0:22:18 > 0:22:23# For good things only come with time
0:22:25 > 0:22:31# But every day the same pain begins to feel OK
0:22:32 > 0:22:38# And every night I close my eyes and it's there again
0:22:40 > 0:22:44# When you're down on the floor, cut to the bone
0:22:44 > 0:22:48# Keep on breaking when you're broke
0:22:48 > 0:22:51# When time never heals
0:22:51 > 0:22:54# It just seems to make it worse
0:22:56 > 0:22:59# Oh, it's got to make you wonder
0:22:59 > 0:23:04# How it's supposed to make you stronger
0:23:04 > 0:23:07# When all you feel is cold
0:23:07 > 0:23:11# You don't know what you're feeling
0:23:11 > 0:23:15# When all you need is gone
0:23:15 > 0:23:18# There's nothing left but needing
0:23:18 > 0:23:21# You can't walk in the light
0:23:21 > 0:23:23# You're scared of the dark
0:23:23 > 0:23:27# Can't be who you are, can't be who you are
0:23:27 > 0:23:29# No-one wants to know you
0:23:29 > 0:23:33# Nobody knows when you're down on the floor
0:23:33 > 0:23:35# Cut to the bone
0:23:35 > 0:23:38# Keep on breaking when you're broke
0:23:38 > 0:23:41# When time never heals
0:23:41 > 0:23:44# It just seems to make it worse
0:23:46 > 0:23:50# Oh, it's got to make you wonder
0:23:50 > 0:23:54# How it's supposed to make you stronger
0:23:54 > 0:23:58# It's got to make you wonder
0:23:58 > 0:24:02# How it's supposed to make you stronger. #
