0:00:06 > 0:00:10with a dream of making it in the heady world of high fashion.
0:00:10 > 0:00:14It's so much fun! I like being the centre of attention.
0:00:14 > 0:00:15I am ringing with good news...
0:00:15 > 0:00:19Jackie has reached the first round of the Miss England competition...
0:00:19 > 0:00:21Victory dance!
0:00:21 > 0:00:25And hopes that winning the coveted pageant will catapult her to model stardom.
0:00:25 > 0:00:28To win Miss England would be crazy cool.
0:00:28 > 0:00:32So far, so normal Leeds lass.
0:00:32 > 0:00:36But, Jackie Green Beauty Queen was born...
0:00:38 > 0:00:42..a boy named Jack.
0:00:42 > 0:00:44I sent an email round the class saying,
0:00:44 > 0:00:47"I'm a girl trapped in a boy's body."
0:00:47 > 0:00:49But it's tough being trans.
0:00:49 > 0:00:54I was 14 and two 40-year-old men beat me up. What dickheads!
0:00:54 > 0:00:56Now she's fighting back.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59We're not freaks, we're just trying to get on with our lives.
0:00:59 > 0:01:03Trying to prove herself at the country's top beauty pageant.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05At five-years-old I was diagnosed as transgender.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08OK, that's fantastic. Good luck.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11But will she be accepted as one of the girls?
0:01:11 > 0:01:13- Please will you hug me? - Oh, babe!
0:01:13 > 0:01:16It's not a big deal to me, and it shouldn't be to anyone else
0:01:16 > 0:01:18because I'm a girl.
0:01:18 > 0:01:23This programme contains some strong language.
0:01:26 > 0:01:30Jackie lives at home in the small Yorkshire town of Guiseley
0:01:30 > 0:01:35with her three brothers, mum Susie, and the dogs.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38Grandma Julie lives round the corner,
0:01:38 > 0:01:40but you'll often find her at the Green family home.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43They're a tight-knit bunch.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46He's a little bully! DOG BARKS
0:01:46 > 0:01:50DOGS GROWL Does anyone else want a cup of tea?
0:01:52 > 0:01:54Wait!
0:01:54 > 0:01:56Go on then.
0:01:56 > 0:02:00Now, you remember when I said Jackie was born a boy?
0:02:00 > 0:02:04Well, she doesn't quite see it like that. It's complicated.
0:02:04 > 0:02:08- You used to be a lad? - I...I never used to be a lad.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13It's just like, if you met someone else who was, like, trans,
0:02:13 > 0:02:16and you said that to someone else who wasn't as nice as me,
0:02:16 > 0:02:19you might get a slap. So you know, be careful.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22- I apologise.- Yeah, should do, dickhead!
0:02:24 > 0:02:26I've always been a girl.
0:02:26 > 0:02:30I had this little birth defect that needed to be fixed.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33Just like having a mole, which you don't like.
0:02:33 > 0:02:38I have a girl's brain, and I had a boy's bottom half, sort of thing.
0:02:38 > 0:02:42I was surprised to learn that Jackie had felt like this
0:02:42 > 0:02:45for as long as she can remember.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47Kids always know who they are.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50It's like if you tried to dress my brother
0:02:50 > 0:02:53when he was like three or four
0:02:53 > 0:02:56in some girl's clothes he would have been mortified.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59He would have seriously kicked some ass about that,
0:02:59 > 0:03:01because it was just like...
0:03:01 > 0:03:03You know. Part of you always knows.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06When I was four, I said to my mum,
0:03:06 > 0:03:09"God's made a mistake. I should have been a girl."
0:03:11 > 0:03:14Obviously, any parent faced with their child saying that
0:03:14 > 0:03:16thinks, I really want this to go away.
0:03:16 > 0:03:18I really don't want to have to deal with this.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20The first time I ever took her shopping
0:03:20 > 0:03:24I took this little boy shopping, you know, with short hair
0:03:24 > 0:03:27and wearing jeans and T-shirt, and we were in the girl aisle
0:03:27 > 0:03:29and he's picking up dresses,
0:03:29 > 0:03:32and putting them up against and swirling around.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35I just thought everybody in the shop is looking at me
0:03:35 > 0:03:37and thinking, "Oh, what is that woman doing?"
0:03:37 > 0:03:40What was going through your head at this stage?
0:03:40 > 0:03:44I just thought she'd grow out of it. I just thought she'd like girl stuff for a bit
0:03:44 > 0:03:47and then she'd start liking boy stuff more.
0:03:47 > 0:03:48And it just never happened.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55I love that. That's cool.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58- She never let up, did she?- Oh, no!
0:03:58 > 0:04:01It's not as if she ever went, "Oh, all right then!" She never let up.
0:04:01 > 0:04:06Jackie was so sure of her identity that she would eventually become
0:04:06 > 0:04:11the youngest person in the world to change their gender through surgery.
0:04:11 > 0:04:13She was just 16.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19It was a moment of transformation for Jackie in more ways than one.
0:04:19 > 0:04:25She lost weight, gained confidence, and set her sights on modelling,
0:04:25 > 0:04:28starting with a string of student fashion shows.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31After being spotted by Miss England scouts
0:04:31 > 0:04:36she won an online public vote and a place in the regional heats.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39The first transsexual to make it into Miss England.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42She was asked to enter the beauty competition by modelling scouts
0:04:42 > 0:04:45who had no idea of her history.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47And that was that Jackie was in fact born a boy,
0:04:47 > 0:04:51and at 16 became the UK's youngest transsexual.
0:04:51 > 0:04:53So why is Jackie entering Miss England?
0:04:53 > 0:04:55The whole point of it is, obviously, yeah,
0:04:55 > 0:04:58it's to further myself in my modelling career,
0:04:58 > 0:05:02but whenever I was younger all I'd see was the drastic trans people
0:05:02 > 0:05:06who've left their kids and wives.
0:05:06 > 0:05:10It's quite daunting to see that that's how your life might turn out.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13I like the idea of being a role model.
0:05:13 > 0:05:16I feel big-headed whenever I say it, it sounds, like, weird.
0:05:16 > 0:05:18But, erm, yeah,
0:05:18 > 0:05:21I think there definitely needs to be more role models.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25We'll be following Jackie all the way, as she attempts
0:05:25 > 0:05:29to become the first ever transsexual Miss England.
0:05:33 > 0:05:3510,000 girls entered Miss England this year.
0:05:36 > 0:05:40The winner will take home a £30,000 prize package,
0:05:40 > 0:05:43become an ambassador for the competition's charity
0:05:43 > 0:05:46and represent England on the global stage at Miss World,
0:05:46 > 0:05:49which will next be held in Mongolia.
0:05:54 > 0:05:58In the coming week, Jackie is competing in two separate qualifiers,
0:05:58 > 0:06:03battling to win a place in the Miss England semi-final. And she seems confident.
0:06:03 > 0:06:07I'm pretty excited actually, I'm just like, come on, lets go do it!
0:06:07 > 0:06:10Take it on! But, yeah, so that's pretty cool.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13- Have you ever done a pageant before? - No, never.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15Have you ever even been to one?
0:06:15 > 0:06:17No.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22Jackie knows she's a complete novice.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25To stand a chance, she's going to need some training.
0:06:25 > 0:06:29So today she's travelled to London to be transformed
0:06:29 > 0:06:32into a potential beauty queen in a one-day course
0:06:32 > 0:06:35run by Miss England 2008 Laura Coleman...
0:06:35 > 0:06:37- I'm Laura.- Hi!
0:06:37 > 0:06:41..along with pageant coach David Douglas and their team of experts.
0:06:41 > 0:06:45- Please take care of me. I'm very nervous!- Don't worry!
0:06:45 > 0:06:48You sit down next to me and I'll explain what's going to happen.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51Have you been in any heats before already?
0:06:51 > 0:06:54Erm, I was in the photo heats round.
0:06:54 > 0:06:57Have you done any heats where you're walking against other girls?
0:06:57 > 0:06:59- No.- It's OK. We're very successful at training people.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03We've had multiple winners, not only in Miss England.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05Last year at Miss Universe we had the top six at Miss Universe,
0:07:05 > 0:07:07so our methods hopefully are working
0:07:07 > 0:07:11and hopefully some of it will rub off on you. Let's go.
0:07:11 > 0:07:15It turns out that winning a beauty pageant isn't just about beauty.
0:07:15 > 0:07:20Organisers say they're also looking for someone with personality.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23So each competition starts with an interview.
0:07:23 > 0:07:28The interview round is usually a quarter of the marks of any pageant.
0:07:28 > 0:07:31So, if you're very good at it, and you blow them away,
0:07:31 > 0:07:34then you're in the game, you're scoring highly.
0:07:34 > 0:07:38The first bit is to tell them about yourself. Did you do anything interesting when you were young?
0:07:38 > 0:07:41Brothers, sisters? Did you have a horse when you were young?
0:07:41 > 0:07:44A lot of girls had a pony or they were into something, you know, there was something.
0:07:44 > 0:07:48I am actually transgender,
0:07:48 > 0:07:52- and I was diagnosed as transgender at five years old.- OK.
0:07:52 > 0:07:56So, erm, through that I would be going to see doctors
0:07:56 > 0:07:59and things like that, a lot of different,
0:07:59 > 0:08:02like, psychotherapist appointments and things like that.
0:08:02 > 0:08:04Don't stall on that story and spend too long on it,
0:08:04 > 0:08:07because you are begging them to ask you a question.
0:08:07 > 0:08:09And then the minute they ask you a question,
0:08:09 > 0:08:10you don't know what road it's gonna take.
0:08:10 > 0:08:13I mean, considering your circumstances,
0:08:13 > 0:08:14what made you want to be in beauty pageant?
0:08:14 > 0:08:19Mainly to be able to raise awareness of people like me,
0:08:19 > 0:08:21and to sort of educate people.
0:08:21 > 0:08:25- Show that we're capable of doing what everyone else is able to.- Good.
0:08:25 > 0:08:26That's a question you'll be asked,
0:08:26 > 0:08:29so what I'm suggesting is, you say it.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32It's a dead story after that cos you're then in amongst other girls, competing.
0:08:32 > 0:08:37You are one of them and there is no difference whatsoever.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40I think what's very important is to dress for your body shape.
0:08:40 > 0:08:42There's lots of, like, different body shapes.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45Next up, Laura wants to help Jackie find the perfect pageant look.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48You can have a rectangle, an hour glass.
0:08:48 > 0:08:52So what kind of body shape do you think you are?
0:08:52 > 0:08:54An hour glass.
0:08:54 > 0:08:56- I don't think I'm quite hour glass! - Yeah! Yeah definitely!
0:08:58 > 0:09:01SHE LAUGHS
0:09:05 > 0:09:09Yeah, you look amazing! Would you wear that, like?
0:09:09 > 0:09:13No, it's not really my style, it's too glittery.
0:09:13 > 0:09:18This is the first time I've seen the normally confident Jackie seem a little awkward.
0:09:18 > 0:09:21This one will look really nice with your hair and everything. Gorgeous.
0:09:23 > 0:09:26Looks so nice!
0:09:27 > 0:09:29Maybe not gold. I don't know, I think it...
0:09:29 > 0:09:34I think it really brings out your skin tone and your hair colour and everything, it really suits you.
0:09:40 > 0:09:44Apparently, winning a pageant isn't just about looking good,
0:09:44 > 0:09:47it's about looking good on the catwalk.
0:09:47 > 0:09:53MUSIC: "California Gurls" by Katy Perry
0:09:53 > 0:09:57And former Miss Universe Great Britain Tara Hoyos-Martinez
0:09:57 > 0:09:58seems to have the knack.
0:10:00 > 0:10:02She's the best walker going.
0:10:02 > 0:10:03- Is she?- Yeah.
0:10:08 > 0:10:13I only ever did one pageant, and I find the walking the most fun.
0:10:17 > 0:10:19Just walk for me how you would walk normally.
0:10:19 > 0:10:21Just like walking down the street. Yeah?
0:10:28 > 0:10:31I'm no expert, but I'm not sure Jackie's getting into this.
0:10:34 > 0:10:36Yeah? That's good, all right then.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39You need to show them that you're meant to be there.
0:10:39 > 0:10:43You could do a back flip, lose your knickers down the middle of the stage,
0:10:43 > 0:10:44but as long as you're confident.
0:10:44 > 0:10:48You're smiling, having a good time, and everyone will be smiling with you.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50It's really smiley. Yeah?
0:10:52 > 0:10:54You all right, darling? You OK?
0:11:10 > 0:11:14SHE SOBS
0:11:17 > 0:11:19- Are you all right, babe?- Yeah.
0:11:19 > 0:11:21Oh, darling!
0:11:21 > 0:11:24Seeing... SHE SIGHS
0:11:24 > 0:11:28Seeing you girls, it's just... I don't stand a chance.
0:11:28 > 0:11:30- Yes, you do!- No, I don't.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33You're amazing! You have everything going for you.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37Like you have everything, honestly, I absolutely swear to you now.
0:11:37 > 0:11:40You're doing amazing. You've just got to do it and enjoy yourself
0:11:40 > 0:11:42and do it for you, not for other people.
0:11:42 > 0:11:44I'm sorry about this.
0:11:44 > 0:11:49You don't have to be sorry. I'll walk with you.
0:11:49 > 0:11:53Now you've made a big step in life, and you've gone through a massive journey.
0:11:53 > 0:11:57You've missed out lots of steps because probably the world hasn't allowed you to have those things.
0:11:57 > 0:12:00We go to pageants and we see little girls coming up to us
0:12:00 > 0:12:03wanting autographs, wanting to ask us questions
0:12:03 > 0:12:05about how do they become a pageant queen.
0:12:05 > 0:12:06It's every girl's little dream.
0:12:06 > 0:12:11And maybe, maybe, some of those pieces of life have been taken away from you.
0:12:11 > 0:12:13But it doesn't mean to say you can't have them now.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16Jackie's confidence definitely took a knock.
0:12:16 > 0:12:22But with support from Laura and David, she's back on the catwalk.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25Keep your shoulders back, there you go.
0:12:26 > 0:12:28Smile, have fun, yep.
0:12:30 > 0:12:34Remember, finish with a good pose.
0:12:34 > 0:12:37- Nice.- I don't have any problem with her being in this pageant,
0:12:37 > 0:12:40and I think she can contest equally, and I think she can win something.
0:12:40 > 0:12:44Left and right, smile at the audience, shoulders back.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46She's got something about her, she has a passion for it,
0:12:46 > 0:12:49and I think she realised today that if she applies herself,
0:12:49 > 0:12:52she can compete at this level.
0:12:52 > 0:12:55I think she can stand tall against all these girls.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57That was good!
0:13:03 > 0:13:06It's two days until Jackie competes
0:13:06 > 0:13:08in her first qualifier for Miss England.
0:13:08 > 0:13:13She's at a photo shoot, trying out different looks.
0:13:13 > 0:13:17For ten years, Jackie's been wearing whatever she wants in public,
0:13:17 > 0:13:19but this wasn't always the case.
0:13:21 > 0:13:25Up to the age of eight, she was still wearing a boy's uniform to school.
0:13:25 > 0:13:28Mum Susie could tell it wasn't working.
0:13:28 > 0:13:31Towards sort of like the middle of primary school,
0:13:31 > 0:13:34erm, she was becoming more and more unhappy.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37It confused the other kids, that she acted like a girl
0:13:37 > 0:13:40and wanted to play with the girls.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42And she just started to tell everybody.
0:13:43 > 0:13:48I sent an email around the class saying, "I'm a girl trapped in a boy's body."
0:13:48 > 0:13:53They just sort of went, "Oh, that's why!"
0:13:53 > 0:13:56You know, "That's why he's so weird!"
0:13:56 > 0:13:59Sorry - I hate saying "he", but I was back then, I guess.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02The head of the primary school said to me,
0:14:02 > 0:14:06"Can you just tell her not to do that?" and I went, "I've tried!"
0:14:08 > 0:14:12Being forced to dress as a boy was taking its toll on young Jackie.
0:14:13 > 0:14:15She was disruptive in lessons,
0:14:15 > 0:14:18she was very confrontational, she was very angry all the time.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21She would steal things, she'd destroy things.
0:14:21 > 0:14:25It was all sort of acting out this immense feeling
0:14:25 > 0:14:29of being so totally wrong and unhappy with herself.
0:14:29 > 0:14:36I had to talk her out of wanting to cut her parts off,
0:14:36 > 0:14:40cos she didn't want... They weren't...they weren't her.
0:14:40 > 0:14:46It was a huge strain on the family. Something had to change.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49By the time she was about nine, I just said to the school,
0:14:49 > 0:14:55"Look, trying to live as a boy in school is not doing her any good.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58"I'm going to let her grow her hair and I'm gonna let her start coming to school
0:14:58 > 0:15:01"looking like she is on the inside."
0:15:02 > 0:15:05It felt just amazing to be myself,
0:15:05 > 0:15:09like instead of having all these people tell me I'm not a girl,
0:15:09 > 0:15:13and it's just like, "Yeah, I am. Fuck off! Go away!"
0:15:14 > 0:15:18Come down, come down. The dress is here!
0:15:18 > 0:15:21There's a delivery for Jackie.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23I have the dress! The dress!
0:15:25 > 0:15:28Oh, my God! I want to put it on now!
0:15:28 > 0:15:32It's Jackie's first ever pageant dress.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35It's so beautiful!
0:15:36 > 0:15:39I think she's starting to get into the part.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55It's the day of the Nottingham heat for Miss England.
0:15:55 > 0:15:58A first for Jackie and a first for the beauty pageant.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14I am nervous, but optimistic.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21Not to sound rude but there's all different shapes and sizes.
0:16:21 > 0:16:25I mean catwalk, everyone's skinny bony and walking up and down like they're zombies.
0:16:25 > 0:16:29Here there's a bit more character introduced.
0:16:29 > 0:16:33I think it's gonna give me a good chance, especially in the interview stages.
0:16:36 > 0:16:38Cocky much(!)
0:16:41 > 0:16:45But before the competition gets into full swing,
0:16:45 > 0:16:48Jackie is meeting David and Laura for some final tips.
0:16:50 > 0:16:51Hello! Oh my gosh.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54I'm dying of heat exhaustion, I've just been running up and down stairs.
0:16:54 > 0:16:58- You look really nice. - She looks lovely, doesn't she?
0:16:58 > 0:17:01So, simple things, never leave your back to the judges, OK?
0:17:01 > 0:17:05They'll score you from the back, and you don't want that.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21- You need to work to feel like that when you're walking around.- Yeah.
0:17:21 > 0:17:23- Just to turn that...- Step out?
0:17:23 > 0:17:27Yes. What will happen is the dress will naturally follow you around,
0:17:27 > 0:17:29almost like a dog.
0:17:29 > 0:17:32You're looking like a beauty queen today.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34- Thank you!- It's a big transformation from the other day.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07Judges rotate around the tables to chat to the girls.
0:18:07 > 0:18:10This is not a job interview. I just want to have a chat.
0:18:10 > 0:18:14It's Jackie's first chance to impress,
0:18:14 > 0:18:17and she's not shy about telling her story.
0:18:17 > 0:18:18Hello, I'm Jackie Green.
0:18:18 > 0:18:22I'm 18 years old, and I'll tell you some more if that's all right.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28and families of children with gender variant issues.
0:18:28 > 0:18:31And the reason I'm part of that charity is because,
0:18:31 > 0:18:34at five years old, I was diagnosed as transgender,
0:18:34 > 0:18:39so since then they've been a massive supporting pillar to me and my family.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45- Like all of the other girls.- Yeah.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48Right, well, I think we should move on.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54- How did that affect your life? - It's gone towards making me who I am,
0:18:54 > 0:18:58and it's gone towards making me a stronger person and more confident.
0:18:58 > 0:19:00OK, that's fantastic. Good luck.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06- Oh, why, thank you!- Really? - Yeah!- Wow.
0:19:08 > 0:19:12It's hard to tell what the judges made of Jackie,
0:19:12 > 0:19:16but if points are awarded to girls with something interesting to say,
0:19:16 > 0:19:17Jackie must have won this round.
0:19:19 > 0:19:21Or maybe it's all down to the catwalk show.
0:19:21 > 0:19:23Can Jackie shine in front of the crowd?
0:19:23 > 0:19:27Now first of all I'd like to say, we have got 33 fantastic girls

0:21:23 > 0:21:25Just really proud of her.
0:21:25 > 0:21:27Takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22- What's going on? - She won the Miss Personality award.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25Basically, Jackie's won the personality vote,
0:24:25 > 0:24:27which has been voted for by all the girls backstage.
0:24:27 > 0:24:30We asked them to vote for the girl that's made an impression.
0:24:30 > 0:24:35And to be honest I can't think of a better award to make her feel accepted, I suppose.
0:24:35 > 0:24:40- Are you going to keep going? - Yeah, as if this is going to stop me. I've been through much worse.
0:24:40 > 0:24:43It's just been a pleasure to meet you and to open our eyes

0:24:59 > 0:25:03because it's just like they have... they have voted for me.
0:25:03 > 0:25:05As in... Oh.
0:25:05 > 0:25:10I have friends and I've been accepted into, with...
0:25:10 > 0:25:14I'm just, like, you know, I'm one of the girls, and I should be.
0:25:14 > 0:25:16So it's just...
0:25:16 > 0:25:19SHE SIGHS
0:25:23 > 0:25:25SHE SOBS QUIETLY
0:25:28 > 0:25:31Jackie might have won acceptance from the pageant girls,
0:25:31 > 0:25:34but tonight's award DIDN'T come with a place
0:25:34 > 0:25:36in the Miss England semi-final.
0:25:36 > 0:25:42But it's not all over. In three days, Jackie has another qualifier.
0:25:42 > 0:25:44Her last chance to make it through.
0:25:48 > 0:25:50The following evening I met up with Jackie,
0:25:50 > 0:25:52who'd had some time to reflect.
0:25:52 > 0:25:56I was so sad. I really was like, "Oh, man."
0:25:56 > 0:26:00I thought I'd made enough of an effort and I thought,
0:26:00 > 0:26:03come on, fourth at least!
0:26:03 > 0:26:07Did it cross your mind that your past might have affected
0:26:07 > 0:26:10the judge's decision?
0:26:10 > 0:26:13I don't know, I don't think so. I hope not.
0:26:13 > 0:26:18Because if it did, then what a bunch of wankers.
0:26:18 > 0:26:20But I don't think it did.
0:26:22 > 0:26:26Jackie clearly has an incredibly strong sense of identity.
0:26:26 > 0:26:31And she's had to fight to express her true self for her entire life.
0:26:31 > 0:26:34That battle became particularly fierce at secondary school.
0:26:34 > 0:26:36Despite arriving as a girl named Jackie,
0:26:36 > 0:26:41in her small home town, she wasn't able to escape her past.
0:26:41 > 0:26:47- Secondary school was an absolute pigging nightmare.- Oh, yeah.
0:26:47 > 0:26:50She just was a girl and she just wanted to be treated like a girl,
0:26:50 > 0:26:51but it just made her a target
0:26:51 > 0:26:54for all this nastiness and bigotry and hatred.
0:26:54 > 0:26:57It was so obvious that I was a girl.
0:26:57 > 0:27:00I had long hair, I kind of guess I was pretty.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03So it was just like, why? I don't even look like a guy.
0:27:03 > 0:27:08If I had a beard and I had like... I talked like friggin' Barry White
0:27:08 > 0:27:11then I would get it, but it's just, like, why?!
0:27:11 > 0:27:14Jackie was attacked a couple of times in the street by other kids.
0:27:14 > 0:27:17They circled her, about 20 of them in the playground, shouting out,
0:27:17 > 0:27:20"Oi, show us your dick, when are you having it chopped off?"
0:27:20 > 0:27:24There was one boy in school who kept calling her "tranny".
0:27:24 > 0:27:26"Tranny, tranny, tranny, freak, tranny, man-beast,"
0:27:26 > 0:27:28and it was every time he saw her.
0:27:30 > 0:27:33And the abuse wasn't confined to the school yard.
0:27:33 > 0:27:37When she was 14, and two adult guys attacked her.
0:27:38 > 0:27:40'They were, like, 40.
0:27:40 > 0:27:43'They came up behind me and they beat me up.'
0:27:45 > 0:27:49I was 14 and two 40-year-old men beat me up!
0:27:49 > 0:27:52What dickheads! Just saying.
0:27:52 > 0:27:58It was a difficult time and led Jackie to some extreme places.
0:27:58 > 0:28:01Something had happened at school. I think I got spat on.
0:28:01 > 0:28:05'I just said to myself, "Right, fuck it," and left.
0:28:05 > 0:28:07'I walked out of school.
0:28:07 > 0:28:11'I stole a packet of 16 paracetamol and took them in the toilet.'
0:28:11 > 0:28:16Obviously, I was feeling quite sick and ill.
0:28:16 > 0:28:20In the end we went in to hospital and checked in overnight.
0:28:22 > 0:28:26So, yeah... That was...that was hard.
0:28:26 > 0:28:30Jackie says she tried to kill herself half a dozen times
0:28:30 > 0:28:32before she was 14 years old.
0:28:32 > 0:28:35It was an anxious time for Susie.
0:28:35 > 0:28:39- I thought I was going to lose her, I thought she was going to be dead. - Yeah.
0:28:39 > 0:28:41I thought she would kill herself, it was so awful.
0:28:41 > 0:28:46Every day was...a worry.
0:28:46 > 0:28:48I had nightmares about it,
0:28:48 > 0:28:51about her being subject to that sort of prejudice and hatred.
0:28:51 > 0:28:53So, yeah, I was terrified.
0:28:54 > 0:28:58'I hated every single part of myself, I didn't see any happy ending.'
0:28:58 > 0:29:01Like, I'm going to end up a dude.
0:29:01 > 0:29:05Or at least... Well, no, I didn't, I knew I WASN'T going to end up a dude.
0:29:05 > 0:29:07I would die before that would happen.
0:29:12 > 0:29:15Jackie had reached a critical point in her life.
0:29:15 > 0:29:17Puberty was around the corner,
0:29:17 > 0:29:19with all the irreversible male changes that come with it.
0:29:19 > 0:29:24She wanted surgery, but it's banned here until you're 18
0:29:24 > 0:29:28and blockers - drugs that could have helped by delaying puberty -
0:29:28 > 0:29:32weren't available to anyone under 16.
0:29:32 > 0:29:36If I didn't get the blockers, I'd basically I'd get an Adam's apple, I'd get a deep voice.
0:29:36 > 0:29:39I'd have been about six-foot-four, I'd have got a beard
0:29:39 > 0:29:43and all that sort of thing. I kept saying to my mum,
0:29:43 > 0:29:46if I have to go through that, I'll kill myself.
0:29:46 > 0:29:50With her daughter's life in the balance, there was a breakthrough.
0:29:50 > 0:29:54Susie tracked down a pioneering Boston doctor named Norman Spack.
0:29:54 > 0:29:56He was Jackie's last chance.
0:29:56 > 0:30:00It's like a light going on for her to meet this doctor who just...
0:30:00 > 0:30:05He just totally and utterly treated her with respect,
0:30:05 > 0:30:07treated her as a girl.
0:30:07 > 0:30:09Said to her, you know, "This is clear to me who you are,
0:30:09 > 0:30:11"we'll just have to sort it out."
0:30:11 > 0:30:13And that made me feel like there was hope,
0:30:13 > 0:30:16that she would have a happy life, that she could be OK.
0:30:16 > 0:30:18Over the course of three years
0:30:18 > 0:30:21and half a dozen visits to the Boston Children's Hospital,
0:30:21 > 0:30:24Dr Spack provided the blocking hormones
0:30:24 > 0:30:29to stop the onset of a male puberty. He saved Jackie's life.
0:30:29 > 0:30:32Jackie hasn't seen Dr Spack for three years.
0:30:32 > 0:30:34Hi, Norman!

0:30:43 > 0:30:47blazing a trail for other youngsters with a similar condition.
0:30:47 > 0:30:52I don't know how... to thank you enough.

0:31:14 > 0:31:15Don't!
0:31:18 > 0:31:23Gosh, you're going to mess up my make-up!
0:31:28 > 0:31:33Jackie has one last crack at making it through to the Miss England semi-final.
0:31:33 > 0:31:35The day before the event, I found her pretty psyched.
0:31:35 > 0:31:38I'm a person, I'm a girl, I'm a human being,
0:31:38 > 0:31:40I'm going for the Miss England competition cos I want to
0:31:40 > 0:31:43show people that that's exactly what trans people are.
0:31:43 > 0:31:46They're normal human beings, we're not freaks,
0:31:46 > 0:31:50we're just trying to get on with our lives.
0:31:50 > 0:31:53There's not many people who are comfortable to say that,
0:31:53 > 0:31:55but...you know, I am.
0:32:09 > 0:32:13Watford on a Wednesday. Setting for the final showdown.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22It's now or never for Jackie, but she's playing it cool.
0:32:22 > 0:32:24'I can only do my best.'
0:32:24 > 0:32:27I might as well enjoy it while I'm here, no point being down about it,
0:32:27 > 0:32:31or worrying, cos if I look down or look like I'm upset or uncomfortable,
0:32:31 > 0:32:32I'm going to lose straight away.

0:32:58 > 0:33:01One of the charities I work with is called Mermaids,
0:33:01 > 0:33:05and it's for gender variant children. I joined them when I was around five,

0:33:09 > 0:33:14So if you won the competition would you like to make this a bit more known to everyone?
0:33:14 > 0:33:18Yeah, definitely. I would love to be able to, sort of, educate people
0:33:18 > 0:33:21and show that trans people are very normal people trying to get on with our lives.
0:33:21 > 0:33:24Yep, there we go, nice. Yep.
0:33:24 > 0:33:27Let's change the legs up, maybe do something legs apart,
0:33:27 > 0:33:30a little bit more posey-posey with this one... That's it.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19I must admit her personality is such a strong point,

0:34:22 > 0:34:25I'm interested now to see the catwalk,
0:34:25 > 0:34:27because being Miss England doesn't necessarily mean

0:48:11 > 0:48:13But has she made the top 12?
0:48:15 > 0:48:18I interviewed her this afternoon and was very underwhelmed,
0:48:18 > 0:48:21wasn't impressed by her particularly this afternoon.
0:48:21 > 0:48:24However, when she came out this evening, it was a completely different story.
0:48:24 > 0:48:28I loved her outfit and there was a swagger there, there was confidence.
0:48:28 > 0:48:32Cheeky, which was definitely a good thing, I'd say,
0:48:32 > 0:48:34shows a bit of personality.

0:48:37 > 0:48:40and I thought she was lovely, I really did.
0:48:40 > 0:48:43In some of the other rounds you gave a bit of a talk
0:48:43 > 0:48:47- about your back story, and none of that happened publicly today.- Oh.
0:48:47 > 0:48:51- Was that a conscious decision or was that just the way things went? - Yeah, it was.
0:48:51 > 0:48:56As much as I'm proud to be who I am, it's not important that everyone knows.
0:48:56 > 0:48:58Because it's not a big deal to me,
0:48:58 > 0:49:01and it shouldn't be to everyone else. Because I'm a girl.
0:49:01 > 0:49:03If I can fit in with everyone else
0:49:03 > 0:49:06then that's also a really big accomplishment for me,
0:49:06 > 0:49:07and it feels like one.

0:50:26 > 0:50:29You did a really good job, the best that you could.
0:50:29 > 0:50:33As you say, some absolute stunning girls who haven't gone through, just like you.
0:50:33 > 0:50:37I'm really gutted, honestly, I could cry, but...
0:50:37 > 0:50:41- I just want to go home, I just really want to go home now.- Yeah.

0:51:11 > 0:51:13It's four weeks since the semi-final
0:51:13 > 0:51:17and I've caught up with Jackie, who's got some news.
0:51:17 > 0:51:22I have decided that I'm going to go to Thailand
0:51:22 > 0:51:25and while I'm there I'm going to have breast surgery.
0:51:25 > 0:51:27A breast reduction, I assume?
0:51:27 > 0:51:32Yeah, yeah, cos they're so huge(!) My bazoomas.
0:51:32 > 0:51:37No, I'm going to have breast augmentation to make them bigger.
0:51:37 > 0:51:41I kept asking Jackie whether she saw this
0:51:41 > 0:51:44as the completion of her physical transformation into a woman.
0:51:44 > 0:51:47But she was clear that wasn't the case.
0:51:47 > 0:51:50No, I have boobs, I have natural boobs.
0:51:50 > 0:51:55Like, I've been on oestrogen for, like, three, four years.
0:51:55 > 0:51:58I've got like some natural growth
0:51:58 > 0:52:00but they're not as big as I would like them.
0:52:00 > 0:52:02I mean, I would like them bigger. Not crazy big,
0:52:02 > 0:52:08I'm not going like I've got Jordan tits or owt, but...you know.
0:52:08 > 0:52:10A nice pair of boobies!
0:52:12 > 0:52:15MUSIC: "Pure Shores" by All Saints
0:52:17 > 0:52:20Bangkok, one week later.
0:52:22 > 0:52:27I've got to ask, do you feel self-conscious about your chest at the moment?
0:52:27 > 0:52:32I don't know, it's just like I've wanted them done for ages.
0:52:32 > 0:52:36But, again, it's not a necessity. I don't feel that I HAVE to...
0:52:36 > 0:52:41Yeah, I do! I feel that I have to, but that's because I want to,
0:52:41 > 0:52:44and I'm an impatient little bitch!
0:52:58 > 0:53:00After leaving Jackie with the nurses,
0:53:00 > 0:53:03Susie bravely waits it out by the pool.
0:53:03 > 0:53:07'Well, like, yeah, of course I'm nervous, it's surgery.'
0:53:07 > 0:53:13I'm worried she'll be disappointed, I'm worried about the pain that she's going to go through.
0:53:13 > 0:53:16Nobody wants to know that their kid's going under the knife, really.
0:53:24 > 0:53:26The next morning, procedure complete,
0:53:26 > 0:53:29Jackie is groggy from the anaesthetic.
0:53:29 > 0:53:32It's hard to tell what the result is
0:53:32 > 0:53:35because it's only, like, 24 hours after.
0:53:35 > 0:53:40The swelling will go down and stuff, so after that it'll be better,
0:53:40 > 0:53:42but, yeah, I'm happy.
0:53:42 > 0:53:44I might not seem it, but I am!
0:53:44 > 0:53:46What does it feel like?
0:53:46 > 0:53:51Er...like I've done a really long workout,
0:53:51 > 0:53:54and then I've got some fat man sat on my chest.
0:53:54 > 0:53:58- But at least it's over now. - Yeah, it'll be fine.- Yeah.
0:54:15 > 0:54:20'I've brought clothes with me that fit me before and now they don't.
0:54:20 > 0:54:23'It's quite hard to dress.'
0:54:23 > 0:54:26Surprisingly enough, you can't wear the same clothes
0:54:26 > 0:54:30when you've got boobs, as what you would when you don't have boobs.
0:54:30 > 0:54:32I didn't really think about that.
0:54:32 > 0:54:37'I was having a panic yesterday about it, I was thinking, "Oh, God, what have I done?"'
0:54:37 > 0:54:40Had a really stupid, sad moment
0:54:40 > 0:54:44cos it was just, like, "Why are you moaning? You have boobs!"
0:54:44 > 0:54:48Six weeks on from the Miss England semis,
0:54:48 > 0:54:51did Jackie regret not mentioning being trans
0:54:51 > 0:54:53at such a crucial stage in the competition?
0:54:53 > 0:54:57No. Being trans has nothing to do with it, really.
0:54:57 > 0:55:01It shouldn't make a different as to whether I was
0:55:01 > 0:55:05more or less likely to win, if you see what I mean, cos I'm a woman.
0:55:05 > 0:55:08That doesn't make me who I am,
0:55:08 > 0:55:14it just adds a little more...story.
0:55:17 > 0:55:20I can't help but admire Jackie for what she's been through,
0:55:20 > 0:55:22and what she represents.
0:55:22 > 0:55:26She's a teenage girl who's not afraid to stand up to -
0:55:26 > 0:55:30or even invite - prejudice and animosity by being honest
0:55:30 > 0:55:33and open about the journey that made her.
0:55:35 > 0:55:39She's been prepared to waive her anonymity, to stand up
0:55:39 > 0:55:42and show people with similar issues that there is light
0:55:42 > 0:55:47at the end of the tunnel, that there can be a happy end to their story.
0:55:47 > 0:55:51And whatever the circumstances of your youth,
0:55:51 > 0:55:53nothing need stop you from following your dreams.
0:55:53 > 0:55:55I think some of it is sad,
0:55:55 > 0:55:59but I think all of the shit that I've been through
0:55:59 > 0:56:01has gone towards making me the character that I am,
0:56:01 > 0:56:04to be able to look forward to things
0:56:04 > 0:56:07and I'm having a really good fucking life, all right?
0:56:07 > 0:56:10It's not sad, I'm not sad, so it's not a sad story.
