0:00:21 > 0:00:24run Scotland's biggest training academy.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26I've sent them home for having bad fake tan

0:00:26 > 0:00:28or when their make-up's not done properly.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30I went for more of a natural kinda look.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Where they play just as hard as they work.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35It's like a big dysfunctional family.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37That's exactly what it's like!

0:00:39 > 0:00:41For one year, we follow students through their basic

0:00:41 > 0:00:44hairdressing qualification Level 2...

0:00:44 > 0:00:48I can do that, you know what I mean, and I just get nervous on the day.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52..and others in their second year Level 3 advanced qualification.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57You've got to be on it. If you're not on it, one day...

0:00:57 > 0:01:00- Honestly, you're screwed. Literally screwed.- Yeah.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04But do they have what it takes to make it through the Hair Academy?

0:01:05 > 0:01:08- You're probably a better hairdresser than...- Everybody?- Aye.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10HE LAUGHS

0:01:45 > 0:01:49and owners Alan and Linda are always on the lookout for new talent.

0:01:49 > 0:01:54Some people are gifted with just that wonderful personality

0:01:54 > 0:01:56that they love people.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Well, that's brilliant.

0:01:58 > 0:01:59That's a gift in our industry.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Each student works in one of the 12 salons

0:02:03 > 0:02:07and attends the academy one day a week for formal training.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09It's a revolving door of students and every three months,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12a new group of 16-year-olds start at the academy,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14run by training director Leigh.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18Today is the start of their journey into their hairdressing career.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22You don't get to just start cutting hair straightaway.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25There's a lot of other things that you have to learn.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Leigh, who started 18 years ago as Alan's assistant,

0:02:28 > 0:02:30and helped set up the Academy,

0:02:30 > 0:02:33welcomes the new students on their first day.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35This is Alan's wall of fame.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38He put this together

0:02:38 > 0:02:41so that everybody, every single morning and every single night,

0:02:41 > 0:02:44could see these inspirational hairdressers.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46When I was looking at the wall full of hands,

0:02:46 > 0:02:48it just kinda made me think "I could do that."

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Like, just kinda gives you so much inspiration.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Grab a seat somewhere near the front.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55Hairdressing isn't a job,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57hairdressing's a career.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59And you're at the bottom of this ladder,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01but that ladder is like Jack And The Beanstalk -

0:03:01 > 0:03:04there is no end to the amount of education you can get,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06the amount of money that you can make.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09It is the best career that you could possibly have.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Some of the things that we're getting to do this year...

0:03:11 > 0:03:13the MOBOs and the BAFTAs,

0:03:13 > 0:03:17and we're the official hairdressers for T in the Park.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20T in the Park is the highlight in the academy's calendar,

0:03:20 > 0:03:23and for the young students, being part of the cutting crew

0:03:23 > 0:03:26is something that they can aspire to in the future.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29With T in the Park, it's all rock stars that you're doing,

0:03:29 > 0:03:31and amazing artists...

0:03:31 > 0:03:33And it's in a field,

0:03:33 > 0:03:36so you know that makes it very different from a salon.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38With over 25 years of hairdressing experience,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41and 15 years as a Rainbow Room salon director,

0:03:41 > 0:03:45John is in charge of preparing the experienced team for the festival.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47So you get your production pass

0:03:47 > 0:03:50and I've managed to get yous all dinner vouchers this year, as well.

0:03:50 > 0:03:51- ALL:- Yay!

0:03:51 > 0:03:54I know. It's good. Let's go and do a model.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Very hard, very hard work, you know.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01You're in there up to your knees in mud sometimes.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03You know how T in the Park is.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05But all you're there is to offer a wee service to bands

0:04:05 > 0:04:08who, over the years we've found out, are on the run.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10Are just moving from place to place.

0:04:10 > 0:04:11I've met Brandon Flowers,

0:04:11 > 0:04:13I've met Katy Perry.

0:04:13 > 0:04:14She's amazing.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17The whole weekend goes by so quick, in a blur, but it's amazing.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22It's not only the professional team who get to experience T in the Park.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25John has got two golden tickets for his star students,

0:04:25 > 0:04:28and he's called Craig and Emma to tell them the good news.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30- Do you know why you're here? - No.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32- Any idea? You must have some idea? - No.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34Leigh and myself were looking at all your work,

0:04:34 > 0:04:37particularly your dressing and your styling,

0:04:37 > 0:04:39so we want to know if you'd like to work at T in the Park this year?

0:04:39 > 0:04:41Really?

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Basically, what it means is for the whole of Saturday,

0:04:46 > 0:04:48you'll be working backstage in the green room.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51You'll be working alongside all the stylists from the salons

0:04:51 > 0:04:54and you'll be helping doing the artists' hair. All right?

0:04:54 > 0:04:57- Thank you very much. - Nae bother.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02I was thinking that if I was actually going, I'd be so scared,

0:05:02 > 0:05:04and now we are, I feel, like...

0:05:04 > 0:05:06We're still excited, though.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08I think it's fantastic, obviously.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Emma, I think, particularly, has been desperate to go to T in the Park.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13So, yes - it's always nice to tell them.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20You're going to be working in the salon for four days

0:05:20 > 0:05:22and coming here one day.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26So all your formal training will take place within the academy.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Leigh would explain how hard the job is

0:05:29 > 0:05:32and she paints a pretty bleak picture,

0:05:32 > 0:05:33cos it's tough.

0:05:35 > 0:05:36You definitely won't be off sick,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38I can pretty much guarantee that -

0:05:38 > 0:05:41unless you have got broken legs,

0:05:41 > 0:05:43you're bleeding from every orifice

0:05:43 > 0:05:46or you're highly contagious,

0:05:46 > 0:05:48you can't be off sick, so don't bother phoning.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54One of the key skills of a successful hairdresser is handling

0:05:54 > 0:05:56the clients, so teacher Tara

0:05:56 > 0:05:58takes the new students through a role play.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01It feels unnatural, it feels more unnatural

0:06:01 > 0:06:05because it's someone you know, but if you can build up your

0:06:05 > 0:06:08people skills doing it with someone you know, it will come really

0:06:08 > 0:06:10naturally to you when it comes to doing it on a client.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12OK?

0:06:12 > 0:06:13Firm handshake.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17Hi, I'm Roisin. I'm going to be doing your hair for you today.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19- Have you ever been to the salon before?- No, not yet.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Erm, what I'm going to do first is I'm going to do

0:06:22 > 0:06:26a hair strand test... Don't make me laugh!

0:06:26 > 0:06:28My dream is to qualify

0:06:28 > 0:06:31and go away somewhere like, abroad

0:06:31 > 0:06:35and get my own business and have people working for me,

0:06:35 > 0:06:37and like, do really good for myself.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39See if you go back up?

0:06:39 > 0:06:41'My goals are to work my way up'

0:06:41 > 0:06:44and try and actually open my own shop.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48I've noticed, like, like some of the hair is actually

0:06:48 > 0:06:51straight on girls and then some bits are actual curled.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55- Aye.- I think that's like, quite a big thing right now.

0:06:55 > 0:06:56Aye, probably.

0:06:57 > 0:07:03My ambition is to be one of the best and to get people to want to

0:07:03 > 0:07:05pay a lot of money for me to do their hair.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08Are you happy with it? No?!

0:07:08 > 0:07:10I think they done really well for their first day,

0:07:10 > 0:07:11it's quite intimidating for them,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13but as long as they've got

0:07:13 > 0:07:15someone at the same level as them, I think they feel OK.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19On day one, I try not to terrify them too much.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Erm, I do, you know,

0:07:21 > 0:07:24try and make them understand that this is the rules

0:07:24 > 0:07:28and the rules AREN'T made to be broken,

0:07:28 > 0:07:31but I give them a little bit of leeway.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34It's not until they have to be pulled in again and

0:07:34 > 0:07:38spoken to that they understand the full wrath of my bad mood!

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Students Angel and Alijah have already been in the academy

0:07:45 > 0:07:46for six months.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51I first started as a Saturday assistant and I'm from Stirling

0:07:51 > 0:07:54and that's where I work, as well, you know what I mean? Stirling.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59I grew up in LA, but I moved here when I was 14 and now I'm 16.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05One of the rules of salon life is some of the students will have to

0:08:05 > 0:08:06choose a new name.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10If there's somebody with the same name as you, you have to

0:08:10 > 0:08:14change it and erm, I choose Binky because I watch Made In Chelsea

0:08:14 > 0:08:18all the time and I really love the name Binky and she's in it.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22If you have two people called Jack, it would be confusing for clients.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Hi, Katherine, I'm Jack... I mean, Syd.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28Syd's the name he came up with, apparently in tribute to

0:08:28 > 0:08:33Syd Barrett and apparently in tribute to Sid the sloth in Ice Age.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37My name's Tara - with a T, cos everyone calls me Lara, Cara,

0:08:37 > 0:08:39do you know what I mean?

0:08:39 > 0:08:41But anyway, my salon name is Angel.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44I won't know her as Tara - I'll know her as her salon name,

0:08:44 > 0:08:46so I know her completely as Angel.

0:08:46 > 0:08:47Tara's my name.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Shut the front door, that's MY name. Aw, it's weird.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52And your mum's called that, as well.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55I was surprised no-one's dog was called that, cos

0:08:55 > 0:08:57everyone's dog is called Tara.

0:08:57 > 0:08:58My real name is Jack

0:08:58 > 0:09:00and then I changed it to Austin

0:09:00 > 0:09:02cos it's my grandpa's maiden name.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Students are continually assessed

0:09:07 > 0:09:11and Level-2 assistant Angel is hoping to get passed off on her

0:09:11 > 0:09:14one-length cut and full-head permanent colour

0:09:14 > 0:09:15by teacher Sarah Jane.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17Best of luck!

0:09:18 > 0:09:20I've seen you do one-lengths before.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23Make sure your sections are nice and clean, and neat and even.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25You need quite a lot of interaction through the assessment or

0:09:25 > 0:09:28we cannae pass you off on it, alrighty?

0:09:28 > 0:09:29Should be great, OK.

0:09:29 > 0:09:30You can do it.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Hi, nice to meet you.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36- Hi.- So it's Lizzy, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38My name's Angel, I'll be doing your hair for you today, OK.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43When I first met Angel, you gotta know how to take her.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45Her personality's quite strong.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47That weekend, I was just at a party and stuff,

0:09:47 > 0:09:49know what I'm saying, living the good life.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51As long as she doesn't say anything too offensive

0:09:51 > 0:09:53and she's professional, then that's fine.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01But halfway through the cut, Angel has to ask Sarah Jane for guidance.

0:10:01 > 0:10:02Can you straighten it up for me?

0:10:02 > 0:10:04It's not a straight line and I can tell.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09See, as long as you just stick to your guideline, honey, you're fine.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Was I doing wrong pulling it down too much, here?

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Pulling it down too much, too much tension

0:10:14 > 0:10:16and you were cutting bang on the line.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18- Perfect.- OK.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24We get these wee people at points in their life where

0:10:24 > 0:10:26they go through all their firsts, you know - first love,

0:10:26 > 0:10:30first break-up, sometimes horrible things like first illnesses

0:10:30 > 0:10:33or losses of family and things like that and you're there to just

0:10:33 > 0:10:37shepherd this person through a really important part of your life.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44I hope to achieve the two years of training and then get

0:10:44 > 0:10:49took on as a stylist and then maybe be one of the top stylists.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Student Sophie is one of nine assistants

0:10:52 > 0:10:56at the Great Western Road salon, run by John.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59Sophie has the potential, her practical work is good,

0:10:59 > 0:11:02she follows instruction well, she's getting better every week.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Mum tried to get into it when she was younger,

0:11:04 > 0:11:07cos she was a hairdresser and she just never got in

0:11:07 > 0:11:10so then Mum said, like, "Why don't you try to get in?"

0:11:10 > 0:11:11So I gave it a try.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Sophie was only maybe about 11 and she'd be able to blow dry

0:11:16 > 0:11:19somebody's hair using the brush and the dryer moving at the same time

0:11:19 > 0:11:22which is a knack, not a lot of people can do that,

0:11:22 > 0:11:25that's how a lot of trainees burn people's heads and things like that.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27I used to always watch my mum, picking up wee things

0:11:27 > 0:11:30and then trying it on her hair and my sister's hair

0:11:30 > 0:11:33and it's just something I just brought up and wanted to do.

0:11:33 > 0:11:39In 2012, Sophie's mum Amanda was diagnosed with breast cancer.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42I'll never ever forget the look on her face when I told her,

0:11:42 > 0:11:43the look in her eyes.

0:11:44 > 0:11:49Well, I took the decision to shave my head - I thought

0:11:49 > 0:11:54that losing my hair coming out in clumps would be far too upsetting.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58And I heard the clippers going and then I heard somebody, like, crying

0:11:58 > 0:12:02a wee bit and I walked out of the room and it was my mum, doing it herself.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05She stopped and then we looked at each other

0:12:05 > 0:12:08and we both burst out laughing and then she handed me them

0:12:08 > 0:12:12and was like, "Do you want to do it?" and I was like, "Erm, OK."

0:12:12 > 0:12:15So then I look the clippers and done the rest of her hair.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18The day I found out I got the all-clear,

0:12:18 > 0:12:20I was like, dancing about my kitchen.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24And since then, Amanda has set up a wig bank to help other women

0:12:24 > 0:12:26dealing with hair loss.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30When she got the all-clear, that's when I started at the Rainbow Room.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34She was clever enough to deal with that and come

0:12:34 > 0:12:38and get a new job and a brand-new trade so she was...ballsy,

0:12:38 > 0:12:43kind of brave to do that, I think, to come into hairdressing

0:12:43 > 0:12:45at that time when she was going through so much at home.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56Back at the academy, having needed assistance with her one-length cut,

0:12:56 > 0:13:00Angel moves on to be assessed on her full-head permanent colour.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02So you quite like doing colour, then?

0:13:02 > 0:13:06Yeah, deffos - it's my favourite thing.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10It's this Scottish weather - I swear to God, I hate it.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13I know, every time we're in America, I'm like, I want to move here.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16Can you not see me in America? Oh, my God, I should be American.

0:13:16 > 0:13:17You should be.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22Let's have a wee nosy. Does it look quite even?

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Yeah, cos I went like that - whoop!

0:13:26 > 0:13:29That's perfection, beautiful.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33I'll give you my decision at the end

0:13:33 > 0:13:36when I see your colour applied and dried and all that kinda good stuff.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38OK - so you follow me.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43..The right temperature.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46You were really good - you just lost your confidence,

0:13:46 > 0:13:48so from your cut point of view, unfortunately

0:13:48 > 0:13:50I need to fail the assessment,

0:13:50 > 0:13:52- so do you have any issues with that, are you...?- No,

0:13:52 > 0:13:55I know it's a learning curve, you know what I mean?

0:13:55 > 0:13:59So I'll learn from it, so it's not a total fail - it's a learn.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01- But your colour was perfect.- OK.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04Aye, it was dead even through to the end.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Well done - so I'm going to pass you off on your colour, right?

0:14:07 > 0:14:09That's it. Perfect.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17For those who don't get to go to T in the Park,

0:14:17 > 0:14:20there's still a chance to feel like a rock star.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Each year, the staff and students record a novelty single

0:14:23 > 0:14:26which they sell in the salons to raise money for charity.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30Leader of the band is Royal Exchange Square salon director

0:14:30 > 0:14:34and guitar enthusiast David, who has come to the academy to hold

0:14:34 > 0:14:36auditions for places in the salon band.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40A lucky few will get to spend a day with him in the recording studio.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45So are you three auditioning tonight?

0:14:46 > 0:14:48- Guitar - no singing. - No singing.

0:14:48 > 0:14:49Singing is not my strong point.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53Same with me, I probably sound like a dying mouse or something.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55A dying mouse?

0:14:55 > 0:14:58What about you? What's your favourite karaoke song?

0:14:58 > 0:15:02Erm, it would have to be...Amy Winehouse.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14Students and stylists arrive for the charity single auditions.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17To help choose the winners, David has enlisted

0:15:17 > 0:15:19the help of some of his colleagues.

0:15:20 > 0:15:24I'd like you to give a warm welcome to our panel of judges this evening.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29Oh, I'm ruthless, you know - I take no prisoners.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31If they're crap, they're crap.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35I'll let Alan be the bad guy, like Simon,

0:15:35 > 0:15:39so I'm either Sharon or Kylie.

0:15:39 > 0:15:40I'll go Kylie.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44Music is probably my first love, so it will be very interesting

0:15:44 > 0:15:46to hear it getting murdered this evening.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52It's about pushing young people and if you can push them

0:15:52 > 0:15:55with their hairdressing it's great, if you can push them in other

0:15:55 > 0:16:00ways of creativity it all makes them more rounded, more confident people.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03Oh, what - man, nah, shut the front door, look at all them,

0:16:03 > 0:16:04I can't handle that.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07Yeah, actually - everyone turn their back and it will be a lot better.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09I got actually nervous about it, I was freaking out.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11A part of me was like, naw, I'm not gonna do it,

0:16:11 > 0:16:13but then some of the guys know that I do rapping

0:16:13 > 0:16:16and stuff and they were like, "Aw, come on, Angel - you got

0:16:16 > 0:16:19"to do it, you got to do it" and I was like, "Argh!"

0:16:19 > 0:16:20SHE RAPS SONG

0:16:20 > 0:16:22So my name is Tara always seem to be in the drama

0:16:22 > 0:16:24I have no luck that's why I always seem to get stuck

0:16:24 > 0:16:26It's a life skill knowing what I wanted to do

0:16:26 > 0:16:29Do it here, just like you Here's my heart on the line

0:16:29 > 0:16:31Everyone knows I was born to shine - boo!

0:16:35 > 0:16:38Wow - you are a star, a star.

0:16:38 > 0:16:39Well done.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42I enjoyed it, I'm glad I did it now, you know what I mean,

0:16:42 > 0:16:44once you've done it, you're glad you've done it.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48# Baby, can't you see I'm calling... #

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Alan and Linda are my bosses, so I'm a little bit afraid of them,

0:16:51 > 0:16:56like, what if they fired me or something - I never know.

0:16:56 > 0:17:00# Then my head's spinning round and round

0:17:00 > 0:17:03# Can you feel me now... #

0:17:03 > 0:17:05Not 100% on the words, actually!

0:17:05 > 0:17:07LAUGHTER

0:17:10 > 0:17:13Eh, like I was quite scared at doing it at first.

0:17:13 > 0:17:18HE SINGS: Tears Dry On Their Own

0:17:18 > 0:17:20But then I just kinda got in the hang of it

0:17:20 > 0:17:22and just kinda blanked everyone out.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25# And in your way in this blue shade

0:17:25 > 0:17:29# My tears dry on their own... #

0:17:29 > 0:17:33Really original, liked it a lot.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35APPLAUSE

0:17:35 > 0:17:39# Popular, you're gonna be popular

0:17:39 > 0:17:43# I'll teach you that proper ploys when you talk to boys

0:17:43 > 0:17:45# Little ways to flirt and flounce Ooh!

0:17:45 > 0:17:49# There's nothing that can stop you from becoming popular...lar! #

0:17:49 > 0:17:52Now, THAT'S what I'm talking about!

0:17:54 > 0:17:57As David considers who'll join him in the recording studio,

0:17:57 > 0:18:00the auditions become slightly chaotic.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04I've been practising my Rod Stewart gravelly voice by drinking

0:18:04 > 0:18:07incessantly for, you know, maybe 40 years.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09# I feel like making love... #

0:18:09 > 0:18:11I think I've nailed it.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14# I feel like making love... #

0:18:19 > 0:18:22You can't sing, you can't play,

0:18:22 > 0:18:24you look terrible,

0:18:24 > 0:18:26you'll go a long way!

0:18:36 > 0:18:40Over the weekend, 85,000 people a day descend on a disused

0:18:40 > 0:18:45airfield in Balado to see more than 150 bands play their hearts out.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48This year is the 20th anniversary of T in the Park

0:18:48 > 0:18:50and the drinks are flowing, the temperatures are soaring

0:18:50 > 0:18:53and everyone is in the mood to party.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56But backstage, there is one tent that is hard at work.

0:19:00 > 0:19:01We got up at 5am this morning

0:19:01 > 0:19:04- and drove from Spain, which took about 13 hours.- Did you?

0:19:04 > 0:19:07I've never been to Scotland before, this is my first time.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10- Does this feel cold to you? - You're my third Scottish person I've ever met.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13It's not T for us until we've done The View.

0:19:18 > 0:19:20How long do you think we've had the salon here now?

0:19:20 > 0:19:22- Eight years. - Eight years, aye.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26It started off with James Brown's hood dryer,

0:19:26 > 0:19:28they phoned to get the hood dryer,

0:19:28 > 0:19:30a granny dryer for his rollers and then

0:19:30 > 0:19:32eventually John went,

0:19:32 > 0:19:35"Will we not just set up a salon?" and that was it.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37That's perfect.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41I was here when James Brown was playing, that was brilliant.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44Lucky students Craig and Emma have been busy all morning

0:19:44 > 0:19:47preparing the hair extensions for the stylists.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51Slightly nervous about it now, I'm sure it'll be a good day.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54Obviously it's a lot of pressure, so it's exciting,

0:19:54 > 0:19:55but scary as well!

0:19:57 > 0:19:59This year is proving to be one of the busiest ever

0:19:59 > 0:20:02at the hairdressing tent with lots of image-conscience

0:20:02 > 0:20:06celebs wanting to look their best before going on stage.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08How do you feel? Is it all right?

0:20:08 > 0:20:09Yeah...

0:20:09 > 0:20:12- Is the pressure all right? - Yeah, it's really good.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15A lot of the artists have said they've seen people coming

0:20:15 > 0:20:17back with great haircuts so that's brought them in,

0:20:17 > 0:20:19so we haven't stopped all day.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21I try and make T in the Park a bit more special

0:20:21 > 0:20:24and the guys have done a fantastic job over the years in here

0:20:24 > 0:20:27and the bands all go out looking fantastic when they go on stage.

0:20:27 > 0:20:29MUSIC PLAYS

0:20:31 > 0:20:35As well as doing the hair, the team try and get some of the artists

0:20:35 > 0:20:39to sign one of their guitars, which will be auctioned off for charity.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43- Ah!- I don't want to take that, that's a bit... That's a bit of a...

0:20:43 > 0:20:45- I'll do it up here. - You deserve to take that.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48- I don't think I do. - You do, Calvin.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Oh, my God, I'm having a moment!

0:20:53 > 0:20:56After working hard in the tent all day,

0:20:56 > 0:20:58Craig and Emma take a well-earned break.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02What are stovies?

0:21:02 > 0:21:04It's kinda like thick soup.

0:21:06 > 0:21:07It's where it joins in - look.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11Stop it... Craig, we could easily kill ourselves on this.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21It's been a great day coming here.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23We would be in the salon doing hair,

0:21:23 > 0:21:27so it's just a lovely environment to come and work in and it's great fun.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31It went quite well, there was quite a lot of people in,

0:21:31 > 0:21:34the salon was busy, saw some familiar faces.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37I was desperate to see The Script, but then I missed them

0:21:37 > 0:21:39cos I was obviously floating around trying to see someone else.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54At the Academy, it's business as usual for the new students.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57So we've got a really, really busy day, it's maybe not going to

0:21:57 > 0:21:59be that much fun, because a lot of it is paperwork.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01We've got reviews to get done,

0:22:01 > 0:22:04so what I want yous to do first of all is I need yous to write

0:22:04 > 0:22:07up a list of what yous have still got to do practical-wise.

0:22:08 > 0:22:12The students are only assessed when working on live models,

0:22:12 > 0:22:16but mostly practise their cuts and hair styles on the Sally head dolls.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19On average, the dolls only last for about six weeks

0:22:19 > 0:22:24and each student has to shell out £32 for a replacement.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27- Right, who doesn't have Sally heads? - I need to buy a new one next week.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30You'll need to go sort it, you'll need to go and figure it out

0:22:30 > 0:22:33cos I've got nothing for yous to do if you've not got a Sally head.

0:22:33 > 0:22:34Go figure it out.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38Do you have a name for your Sally?

0:22:38 > 0:22:39Have you?

0:22:39 > 0:22:41Aye, mines is called Sally Cinnamon.

0:22:41 > 0:22:42What?

0:22:42 > 0:22:45Please tell me you've heard that song before?

0:22:45 > 0:22:49# Sally Cinnamon You're my world... #

0:22:49 > 0:22:52- Binky, are you ready for your review?- All right.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54And then I'll grab you, Austin, as well.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58So G17 you've completed,

0:22:58 > 0:23:01GH10 you've completed,

0:23:01 > 0:23:04GH11 you've completed,

0:23:04 > 0:23:07G7 you've completed...

0:23:07 > 0:23:10- That's brilliant.- Thank you.

0:23:10 > 0:23:11Back at awesome.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16Right, OK - the problem is now you need to keep that pace up, that's the problem.

0:23:16 > 0:23:20I said my Sally is called Sally Cinnamon and they were clueless.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22As to what?

0:23:22 > 0:23:23Like, what Sally Cinnamon is.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25What is it?

0:23:25 > 0:23:27It's a Stone Roses song! Why does nobody know this?

0:23:27 > 0:23:31Cos I'm not cool, I'm a mum! I watch The Voice at the weekend.

0:23:31 > 0:23:36# I tell Sally I was never happy... #

0:23:36 > 0:23:40But unfortunately for one of the new students, their time

0:23:40 > 0:23:43at the Academy has already come to an end.

0:23:45 > 0:23:46If we do have leavers,

0:23:46 > 0:23:49it does tend to be at the beginning of the course.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53I think for Roisin, I think the course was just a bit harder than

0:23:53 > 0:23:55she expected it to be.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58Unfortunately, some people just don't make it.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02There was too many people in the Rainbow Room and I found it

0:24:02 > 0:24:05hard to get my training done right,

0:24:05 > 0:24:07but I'm still doing hairdressing and

0:24:07 > 0:24:11where I work the now, there's only two of us, so I find it much easier.

0:24:11 > 0:24:17# Sally Cinnamon, you're her world. #

0:24:18 > 0:24:19How's things been?

0:24:21 > 0:24:22Been all right.

0:24:22 > 0:24:23Yeah? All right?

0:24:23 > 0:24:25HG11, so if we go to that unit

0:24:25 > 0:24:28and see what you've still got left to complete...

0:24:28 > 0:24:30It's just kinda everything.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Yeah, but you've been doing all the practical work, practising it

0:24:33 > 0:24:35on your Sally head and practising it on your block head so we just

0:24:35 > 0:24:38need to find the models for that, so when are we going to get models in?

0:24:40 > 0:24:42Eh, I'm going to try and look for them.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45The main thing we need from our assistants is that they

0:24:45 > 0:24:49realise they have to have a set amount of models, they have to cut

0:24:49 > 0:24:52hair, the practical aspect of their job is the most important thing.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55If they can't get someone to get their hair cut for free, then

0:24:55 > 0:24:58they're not going to get someone to charge £30 for a haircut.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02OK, so be more organised and organise your models

0:25:02 > 0:25:05a week in advance.

0:25:05 > 0:25:06All right?

0:25:06 > 0:25:10If you just carry on with your project, please.

0:25:10 > 0:25:11Thank you.

0:25:11 > 0:25:15Eh, I'm feeling better than what I was when I first came - like,

0:25:15 > 0:25:18I always end up getting my hair done different colours and stuff

0:25:18 > 0:25:22like that and that always seems to bring my confidence up a wee bit.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27For the salon band, the big day has come as they head to the

0:25:27 > 0:25:30studio to record the single that will be sold in the salons

0:25:30 > 0:25:32to raise money for charity.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37From all the rehearsals, we've picked three really good singers,

0:25:37 > 0:25:39it's going to be great fun.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41We're all looking forward to it and they're quite happy

0:25:41 > 0:25:45because they're away from the salon for a bit of a skive of a day.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48Oh, my God, stretch.

0:25:49 > 0:25:53The song is their own take on Bad Company's Feel Like Makin' Love.

0:25:54 > 0:25:55Try that, if that's easier?

0:25:55 > 0:25:58- # Feel like doing hair... # - But that's flat.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Oh, touche!

0:26:01 > 0:26:05- Are you really going there? - All right, girlfriend!

0:26:05 > 0:26:07ALL: # Feel like doing hair! #

0:26:07 > 0:26:08That's it, excellent.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12- Break a leg. - I shall.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16Scared.

0:26:16 > 0:26:20# Baby, when I think about you

0:26:20 > 0:26:25# I think about hair

0:26:26 > 0:26:30# Darlin', when I see you coming... #

0:26:30 > 0:26:32Her voice is off.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35# Hair

0:26:35 > 0:26:38# Feel like doing hair... #

0:26:40 > 0:26:42# Feel like doing hair... #

0:26:46 > 0:26:48We'll just do one more take.

0:26:48 > 0:26:51- Was that OK? - Nah, that's you.

0:26:51 > 0:26:53- That was great. - Thanks!

0:26:53 > 0:26:55OK, that's you.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57While David lays down the final guitar track,

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Angel gives the girls the lowdown on her new rap.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04Part of it is about how everyone is trying to make it and stuff

0:27:04 > 0:27:08like that, so a smidge cheeseball!

0:27:10 > 0:27:15And I actually wrote it on Monday night when I was eating my savoury roll supper - you've had one of them?

0:27:15 > 0:27:16- No.- Oh, my God, it was so good.

0:27:18 > 0:27:21- Angel, that's you, when you're ready.- OK.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23SHE HUMS NERVOUSLY

0:27:25 > 0:27:28How come I can hear me, like, speaking through this?

0:27:28 > 0:27:32- Through this.- Is it that what it...? Shut up! SHE LAUGHS

0:27:32 > 0:27:35Oh, my God. I'm so laughing. That's quite funny. ANGEL LAUGHS

0:27:35 > 0:27:37Do I go now?

0:27:38 > 0:27:41Do I just...? I don't know when to go.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45SHE RAPS: Well, I'll be down here Please sit down

0:27:45 > 0:27:46I'll make you aware

0:27:46 > 0:27:48I'll play the game and I'll put you to shame

0:27:48 > 0:27:50This has been my dream ever since I was 14

0:27:50 > 0:27:52Let the haters hate because they just can't relate

0:27:52 > 0:27:54Don't bring me down

0:27:54 > 0:27:55I'll be the first to leave this town

0:27:55 > 0:27:57Bright lights call my name

0:27:57 > 0:27:59I pray to God my life will never be the same

0:27:59 > 0:28:01Well, it all comes back to what we know
