0:00:27 > 0:00:30I went for more of a natural kind of look.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35It's like a big, dysfunctional family.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Ahem, that's exactly what it's like.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41For one year, we follow students through their basic

0:00:41 > 0:00:43hairdressing qualification Level 2.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45I can do that, you know what I mean?

0:00:45 > 0:00:47And I could just get nervous on the day.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51And others in their second year Level 3 advanced qualification.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54My ambition is to be one of the best.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57You've got to be on it. Like, see, if you're not on it one day,

0:00:57 > 0:01:00like, honestly, you're screwed, you're literally screwed.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04But do they have what it takes to make it through the hair academy?

0:01:05 > 0:01:09- You're probably a better hairdresser than...- Everybody.- Aye.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34Coming up... Halloween and the students are judged

0:01:34 > 0:01:36on some alternative cutting techniques.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38Oops!

0:01:41 > 0:01:45Noel Gallagher is right behind me. The best person ever.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Oh! I do not have words.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50And one student gets on the wrong side of Leigh.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54We don't always like what a client brings in, but you have to do it.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56We're going to have words.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05Here at Rainbow Room Academy, we're pretty busy.

0:02:05 > 0:02:06We've got lots of milestones to meet,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08they've got lots of practical work to do,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11so the place is going to be pretty noisy for the next month or so.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15Here's your brush to brush it around your hand, OK?

0:02:15 > 0:02:18I love this time of year, there is a real buzz about the salon.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21You've got Halloween and then you've got the run up to Christmas,

0:02:21 > 0:02:23so lots of stuff going on.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27It's three months since the last in-take of students

0:02:27 > 0:02:31and teacher Tara gets to grips with how everyone's progressing.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33What I want you to do first of all is take a minute each to

0:02:33 > 0:02:36write up what you have got left to do. It just means that

0:02:36 > 0:02:39when clients come in today, we know who's going to be best suited

0:02:39 > 0:02:43to carry out whatever it is the client's looking to have done.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45A few months into their training,

0:02:45 > 0:02:49you're trying to encourage them to be a little bit more responsible,

0:02:49 > 0:02:51they have to realise that they're not in school anymore,

0:02:51 > 0:02:54it's very much a work environment and, although they're trainees,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57they have to try and adapt quickly to that.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01The transition from everything being laid out

0:03:01 > 0:03:03and set for them in their day

0:03:03 > 0:03:05to starting to use that little bit

0:03:05 > 0:03:09of initiative for themselves, it's a big...it's a big jump.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13At the academy, the students also have to be ready to style

0:03:13 > 0:03:16and cut the hair on any walk-in clients.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Can you sit right back for me?

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Level 2 assistant Angel is hoping her second attempt at a one-length

0:03:25 > 0:03:27hair cut will be successful.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31- Have you always wanted to be a hairdresser?- Yeah.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35Always. Always, always, always.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Do you know what I used to do, right?

0:03:37 > 0:03:39See my gran, right, she had two dogs,

0:03:39 > 0:03:42I used to sit and put rollers and blow dry their hair, and it was dogs.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45That was mental.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49Assessing Angel today is teacher and stylist Ava.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50How are you getting on?

0:03:50 > 0:03:53I'm still alive, so that's the main thing.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57This is the first time that Angel has attempted this haircut

0:03:57 > 0:04:00standing up, and something that Ava will be monitoring.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03It is difficult your first time doing it, especially if you've

0:04:03 > 0:04:08been trained to do it sitting down, but you have to gather

0:04:08 > 0:04:10lots of experience and lots of different body positions

0:04:10 > 0:04:12on how to cut hair.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Do you think we could just cut it a little bit shorter?

0:04:15 > 0:04:19- Cos... Just, like, a little bit. - I haven't done the side bits yet.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22- OK.- So I'll go and do the side bits, OK?

0:04:25 > 0:04:28But just as Angel is about to finish her assessment,

0:04:28 > 0:04:30it all goes wrong.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32I'm just stressing out.

0:04:32 > 0:04:33I can't breathe.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36I don't know why, I'm just stressing out about it.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38And my one length out there is shocking,

0:04:38 > 0:04:41like, I'm just, like, pure disappointed with myself

0:04:41 > 0:04:43cos it's pure crap.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47- Do you get told to sit down when you're doing a one length?- Mm-hm.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Thank you. Oh, my.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53Unfortunately, teacher Ava has to help Angel.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55I just straightened the fringe again, OK?

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Which means that she'll have to try again

0:04:58 > 0:05:00to pass off her one-length hair cut.

0:05:00 > 0:05:01I think she just got a bit stressed

0:05:01 > 0:05:03and over thought it a wee bit as well.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05I'm pure disappointed in myself,

0:05:05 > 0:05:07so that's all.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10I want to get to this happy place.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Oh, God. Cos I can do that, you know what I mean?

0:05:12 > 0:05:15And I could just get nervous on the day, that's what happens.

0:05:15 > 0:05:16The outcome was good.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19The mother was really happy and the daughter looked really

0:05:19 > 0:05:22pleased with her haircut as well so I think she's OK now.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26Depressed, depressed, depressed... Aww...

0:05:30 > 0:05:31Yeah, yeah, go for it.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36After a few months of working closely together, the students

0:05:36 > 0:05:39have started to get used to the social side of hairdressing.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43We're a really close group of friends.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44I don't know, I think it's just,

0:05:44 > 0:05:48like, we've been around each other every Wednesday.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51Me and Austin, like, clicked, like, just like that.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53We've eventually become quite close.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55- That's right. - We'll talk about that later.

0:05:55 > 0:06:00We're both kind of... I'm dead loud and like to jump about

0:06:00 > 0:06:01and all that, and so is Austin.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Austin has got love bites.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Fae yesterday.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09Aww, that's so funny.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13Everybody gets along and we've been out on a few nights out,

0:06:13 > 0:06:16which have ended well.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19So, has there been any romance amongst the students?

0:06:19 > 0:06:23Definitely no. There are no potential relationships.

0:06:23 > 0:06:28Have I had problems with students dating students or clients?

0:06:28 > 0:06:31And the answer is yes to both.

0:06:31 > 0:06:32I've got my own partner, so I just like

0:06:32 > 0:06:36to keep it to myself and I just don't like it at all.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38You have my heart, Kirsty.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41I'm, like, a single Pringle that's not ready to mingle.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43I don't think I'm ready for that yet.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46I don't want to feel uncomfortable in my staff room because I walk in

0:06:46 > 0:06:50and somebody is having a wee kiss and a winch, which has happened.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53It's never really been a problem in my salon.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56I'm the dad. I'm the last to know.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00I think we need more attractive guys working with us cos I work with

0:07:00 > 0:07:05my best friend, but unfortunately, he's playing for the other team.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08I'm in a class full of girls and that is really...

0:07:08 > 0:07:09that's not my cut of tea.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11We had a boy and girl

0:07:11 > 0:07:13who went out for a while,

0:07:13 > 0:07:17from assistant level, but not with clients, do you know that?

0:07:17 > 0:07:18We're not a dating service.

0:07:22 > 0:07:27MUSIC: Thriller by Michael Jackson

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Every year, the staff at Crow Road

0:07:29 > 0:07:31and Great Western Road

0:07:31 > 0:07:33get a little bit carried away with Halloween.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35All the team spend ages planning their outfits

0:07:35 > 0:07:38and we've always go kind of scary music on and stuff.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41There's also pumpkin carving - a competition between assistants,

0:07:41 > 0:07:43which I'm going to judge later on as well.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45- I've done it wrong already. - So have I.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49So, yeah, I like to do it every year. Take it quite seriously.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53I look like a panda, I look like a panda ghoul.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55SHE LAUGHS

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Assistants Sophie, Misha

0:07:58 > 0:08:01and Jodie Lee have swapped their scissors for knives as they carve

0:08:01 > 0:08:06their pumpkins and try and match the high standard already set by John.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09It smells.

0:08:09 > 0:08:10This is pure far down.

0:08:10 > 0:08:15Smells like sweaty socks or something, uch.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17I think I've done this wrong.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19Whoops.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Over at Crow Road, they've decided to let the customers

0:08:24 > 0:08:26judge their pumpkins.

0:08:26 > 0:08:27To be honest, I'm going to say -

0:08:27 > 0:08:29first,

0:08:29 > 0:08:31second and third for that one.

0:08:31 > 0:08:36- Yes.- Right, OK. Third, second and first.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Aww, you didn't even pick mine? Aww.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42Secretly, the competition has been between Crow Road salon

0:08:42 > 0:08:45and Great Western Road salon. And, as I'm sure you can see,

0:08:45 > 0:08:48the quality of pumpkins that we've created, that we can actually cut

0:08:48 > 0:08:52pumpkins, and possibly hair, better than the guys at Great Western Road.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59Back in Great Western Road, Sophie, Misha and Jodie Leigh

0:08:59 > 0:09:02have decided on a slightly different style of pumpkin.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04Look, I'm just going to make mine look sick.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09I want mine to be sick now. Right, that's me done now.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17I think I done all right...for a first attempt.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19- Ah, look at the eyes. - What's up with them?

0:09:19 > 0:09:21- And a wee round nose. - It's not even round.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27With the final touches applied, it's time for John to judge the pumpkins.

0:09:27 > 0:09:28Right.

0:09:33 > 0:09:34I think I done all right.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37I think yous all did brilliant. I actually think the best thing

0:09:37 > 0:09:39is the fact these have all got ears.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41I've never seen a pumpkin with ears in my life.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44I'm sorry. Yes, well done.

0:09:44 > 0:09:49That one... It looks like he's actually in pain and spewing up.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- That was me.- Is it? Winner.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Champion pumpkin, here you are.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11One of the salon issues the staff need to keep on top of

0:10:11 > 0:10:13is the students' use of mobile phones.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17You can use it on your breaks or your lunch hour,

0:10:17 > 0:10:20but other than that, they've to be completely switched off.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Oh, my God, let me snapshot my back. Right, how do I do this?

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Just back.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28So if anyone in the workplace is caught with a phone on them

0:10:28 > 0:10:32during the working hours, then they will get a warning.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34So you're showing good potential already.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38- You've also been doing cuts as well, ain't you?- And lots of dyes.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40- MOBILE PHONE RINGS - Ah!

0:10:43 > 0:10:45Go and put it in the locker, you know the rules.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49Yeah, sorry. It was my mum.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51Was that your mum? Aye.

0:10:54 > 0:10:55Right, that's your first strike,

0:10:55 > 0:10:59three strikes and I'll need to reprimand you.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02But it's not just the students use of mobile phones the directors

0:11:02 > 0:11:06have to monitor, it's also how they use social medial.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09The most annoying thing is just them checking them all the time.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11You know, it just gets in the way of work.

0:11:11 > 0:11:15I'm taking a picture. I hate taking snapshots of it, like...

0:11:16 > 0:11:19Following a recent incident in the Ayr salon,

0:11:19 > 0:11:21director Riccardo calls a meeting.

0:11:23 > 0:11:29Twitter, Facebook and social media in general,

0:11:29 > 0:11:34if you've got the time to be saying that you can't wait to get

0:11:34 > 0:11:37finished or there's only a few clients to go and it's time

0:11:37 > 0:11:41to get home, then just go home, right?

0:11:41 > 0:11:43Go home, don't come back.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47Also for your own self. That's out there, people are seeing that.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50People are making a judgment on you as a stylist,

0:11:50 > 0:11:52on you as an assistant on that information.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54So how excited are they going to be about you doing their colour

0:11:54 > 0:11:57if you're telling the world that you cannae be bothered,

0:11:57 > 0:11:58waiting till you get home?

0:11:58 > 0:12:00So it's not on

0:12:00 > 0:12:03and I don't want anything like that online.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05OK? Do we understand?

0:12:05 > 0:12:06- Louder?- ALL: Yeah.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Right, OK, serious bit over.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10Right, let's go. Thanks.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16Riccardo, who has been a Rainbow Room hairdresser for 24 years and

0:12:16 > 0:12:21has owned the Ayr salon since 2004, has just taken on a new assistant,

0:12:21 > 0:12:22Callan.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Would you like to have a treatment today or would you like

0:12:25 > 0:12:27to stick with the must?

0:12:27 > 0:12:29I think I'll go with the regular today.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Callan's start has been pretty extraordinary,

0:12:32 > 0:12:37really, you know, from not knowing that we was going to have

0:12:37 > 0:12:40a career in hairdressing on the Tuesday to having

0:12:40 > 0:12:44a trial on the Wednesday and being on the floor on Saturday.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46He's jumped into it.

0:12:46 > 0:12:47How was that for you?

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Great. Lovely.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51All right, so what we'll do is we'll take you over

0:12:51 > 0:12:52and get that washed, OK?

0:12:52 > 0:12:55If you'd like to follow me over to the back.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59The most exciting thing for me is he just doesn't say no,

0:12:59 > 0:13:02and he'll just look at you and go, "All right, OK.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04"What's expected of me and what should I wear?"

0:13:04 > 0:13:07Which is pretty much the two correct answers

0:13:07 > 0:13:09if you're going to get into hairdressing.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13Every year Riccardo and the team at Ayr help out at the local

0:13:13 > 0:13:17school, Kyle Academy, by doing the pupils hair for their fashion show.

0:13:17 > 0:13:2270, 80 girls all hyped up after school can be a bit mental,

0:13:22 > 0:13:23but we manage.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26We've been doing it every year, so getting used to it now.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31Callan is a former pupil of Kyle Academy.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34Having left only a couple of months ago, he's back at his old

0:13:34 > 0:13:37school to style the hair of his former classmates -

0:13:37 > 0:13:40something he's finding a little bit strange.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43I was always quite quiet at school.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45It's quite weird, actually, seeing everybody again

0:13:45 > 0:13:48because I've spent eight weeks away from everyone,

0:13:48 > 0:13:51like I've worked almost every day since then.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53The good thing is that some of the guys aren't going on

0:13:53 > 0:13:55at the start. The show starts

0:13:55 > 0:13:58and you're still doing a bit of hair, you know? So...

0:13:58 > 0:13:59it'll be fine.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Hello and welcome to Kyle Academy fashion show.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12It's a playsuit that's got a diamante mark,

0:14:12 > 0:14:16- so it kind of needs to be up. - A wee bit up, right?- Yeah.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19New students typically spend three months getting used to basic

0:14:19 > 0:14:23salon practices before starting at the academy, but Callan

0:14:23 > 0:14:26started his training after only three weeks,

0:14:26 > 0:14:28and is finding it a challenge.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31It's been really weird cos everybody at the academy is really far ahead

0:14:31 > 0:14:34of me and I'm still struggling to use straighteners. And it's just really

0:14:34 > 0:14:37difficult to keep up with them, but I'm trying my hardest.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40It's been a challenge, but I'm really enjoying it.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44After a whirlwind of hair styling,

0:14:44 > 0:14:47the finish line is in sight for Riccardo and the team.

0:14:47 > 0:14:51You're doing 60, 70 people's hair in the time that you would

0:14:51 > 0:14:55normally do two, so it's a slightly pressured situation.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57Thank you very much, everyone.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00Amazing as usual. As usual. It's not a shocker for me, you know,

0:15:00 > 0:15:02I've seen them do it a million times,

0:15:02 > 0:15:03but naw, they were great.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15At the academy, Angel is busy helping Misha put foils on

0:15:15 > 0:15:16another walk-in client.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19- Then you have, like, salon names, so...- Oh, right!

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Yeah. I just got given mine.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26Angel, so... People were like, "You look like a wee angel."

0:15:26 > 0:15:30I was like, "Wait till you get to know me." Naw, I'm kidding.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35Angel, whose real name is Tara, is following in her family's

0:15:35 > 0:15:38footsteps by training to become a hairdresser.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42From the day she was born, Tara has always wanted to

0:15:42 > 0:15:44be into hairdressing.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46My mum and her sisters were all hairdressers,

0:15:46 > 0:15:48Myself, I would go to school

0:15:48 > 0:15:51with a different hairstyle cos my mum would practice on me,

0:15:51 > 0:15:52so it's no different now.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55I think my mum is just happy that she's kind of got me

0:15:55 > 0:15:58and my brother both just kind of set in stone as to what we're doing,

0:15:58 > 0:15:59do you know what I mean?

0:15:59 > 0:16:02I drive her down to the train in the morning and

0:16:02 > 0:16:06the eyelashes are sitting on the dash and they're put on in transit.

0:16:06 > 0:16:11But I'll tell you, by the time she's on the train, she is then Angel.

0:16:20 > 0:16:24Angel is also involved with a local dance group who have a big showcase

0:16:24 > 0:16:26coming up in her home town of Alloa.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30And typically, she has volunteered to do the hair for all the dancers,

0:16:30 > 0:16:31as well as dancing herself.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37A week tonight, you'll be doing this in front of 500 people,

0:16:37 > 0:16:39so if I was you, I would up it a little bit.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42It's a wee bit boring, OK? Go for it.

0:16:47 > 0:16:48I'm just trying to learn my dance

0:16:48 > 0:16:51but I'm sweating right now. I'm sweating.

0:16:56 > 0:16:57There's a week to go

0:16:57 > 0:17:02and this one, I don't feel like it's ready to go on stage yet.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04- Now, are you going to do hair as well?- Uh-huh, yeah.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08- Are you going to have time to do that?- Yeah, I'll have time.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11- You sure?- Uh-huh. I'll be running on stage!- Added pressure!

0:17:11 > 0:17:15She is very confident. She's always laughing,

0:17:15 > 0:17:18always joking. She's just such a happy wee sausage.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30For Level 3 assistant Connor,

0:17:30 > 0:17:33hairdressing is a very rewarding profession.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36A lot of people feel that they're not attractive or whatever.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39I love the fact that when you're doing someone's hair,

0:17:39 > 0:17:42you're making them feel better with a different haircut or colour

0:17:42 > 0:17:44or style or something different.

0:17:44 > 0:17:48Connor is based in the Crow Road salon along with teacher Nick.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51I love Connor. He's got a really, really natural ability,

0:17:51 > 0:17:53a really good eye for style as well.

0:17:53 > 0:17:58Teaching him is a joy. He seems to just pick up things really quickly.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01Connor is coming towards the end of his Level 3.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03Don't you worry about that, my friend.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07And has found the training an enjoyable process.

0:18:07 > 0:18:08I do like coming into the academy

0:18:08 > 0:18:11because you're with other assistants that you don't really see

0:18:11 > 0:18:16usually, everyone's really friendly and we have kind of banter together.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19I've got really good eyesight, just my eyes are shaped funny.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23- I have a rugby-ball shaped eyes. - You do!

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Damn rugby-shaped eyes!

0:18:29 > 0:18:32Connor is about to sit his final test as a Level 3 assistant.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35If he passes, he'll spend three months at the academy

0:18:35 > 0:18:40and then be kept on full-time as a stylist at the Crow Road salon.

0:18:40 > 0:18:41You'll be awesome.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45I'm feeling a wee bit nervous, but I'm all right.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47Just need to do it, I suppose.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52It's not a nerve-racking as you think it's going to be, really.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54- Once it starts, I'll be fine. - They wouldn't put you through it

0:18:54 > 0:18:56if they didn't think you could do it.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Along with Connor, four other students

0:18:59 > 0:19:00will also be assessed by Leigh.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06Your test will be split into two different parts.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08One of them will be a cut and colour,

0:19:08 > 0:19:11so I want you to use creative colouring techniques.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13I want to see more than one technique.

0:19:13 > 0:19:19Second part is a hair-up, and I want you to recreate any hair-up

0:19:19 > 0:19:22out of that magazine. So this is your time, really, to shine

0:19:22 > 0:19:23and to show me what you're made of.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27I need you finished, tidied up by quarter to five.

0:19:30 > 0:19:34I'm thinking a long bob, but I don't want it to be like...

0:19:34 > 0:19:37- Everybody sounds like they're doing a bob.- Don't go a safe bob.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40- She doesn't really like safe. - No?- No.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48Helping Leigh with the assessment is stylist and teacher Julianne.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50Hey, guys, how yous getting on?

0:19:51 > 0:19:53- Are you OK?- Yeah.

0:19:53 > 0:19:57So once your colour is on, make sure your hair-up is done.

0:19:57 > 0:19:58OK?

0:19:58 > 0:20:00- Yous three on your hair-ups already?- Yep.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08In the classroom, salon director Dylan has some good

0:20:08 > 0:20:11news for students Laurie, Binky and Syd.

0:20:12 > 0:20:17Yous three guys have been picked to go to the Scottish Style Awards.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22The Scottish Style Awards are one of the biggest

0:20:22 > 0:20:24shows in Scotland for music and fashion.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26They're going to have a host of celebrities there,

0:20:26 > 0:20:30like Noel Gallagher and his wife, Sarah. And you guys are going

0:20:30 > 0:20:34to actually be helping the art team and working on the hair. How's that?

0:20:34 > 0:20:38- Sounds amazing.- That sounds good, yeah? That'll be a good day then.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41It's completely different from everything that's in the salon

0:20:41 > 0:20:43so it'll be good to see how a catwalk works.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45It'll be pure, it'll be crazy.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47I'm pure buzzing, I cannae stop.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Well, listen, guys, high-five?

0:20:57 > 0:21:00On the salon floor, Connor's test is almost over.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04If you had a wee hairpiece, you could add that in, make that wider.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07And even Rainbow Room owner Alan is taking an interest.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09Watch your shape.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13If you make that too narrow, you're going to make her face look

0:21:13 > 0:21:14really long.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21With the time up, Leigh comes back to assess the cut and colour

0:21:21 > 0:21:23and the hair-up test.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26- Is this Kenny's?- Yeah. - Was that your first one?- Yeah.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30But it seems that Kenny hasn't quite followed the instructions.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Kenny, the specific instructions were,

0:21:33 > 0:21:36"Find a hair-up and copy the picture. Specifically."

0:21:36 > 0:21:39- I like this.- I don't care!

0:21:39 > 0:21:42You don't always like what a client brings in,

0:21:42 > 0:21:47but you have to do it. That is no use to me or this test, none.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49Right, come on, hurry up.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55- SHE SIGHS - We are going to have words.

0:21:58 > 0:22:02Having dealt with Kenny, Leigh moves on to Connor.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04Fringe is lovely.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07Right, Connor. Do you want to explain your haircut?

0:22:07 > 0:22:10At first, I was going to do just a one-length bob,

0:22:10 > 0:22:14but then... So I just cut a sharp edge on it.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16Fringe has got a nice wee

0:22:16 > 0:22:19- curve shape on it.- Yeah, the fringe has a nice curve.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22And that's really hard to get, especially on a sally head.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25Next, she assesses Connor's hair-up.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28Well done. Why did you pick this picture?

0:22:28 > 0:22:31I just wanted to incorporate a roll into it and I see that one,

0:22:31 > 0:22:35and I've been practising rolls, so I thought, "I'll do that one."

0:22:36 > 0:22:40But has Connor done enough to be kept on as a full-time as a stylist?

0:22:40 > 0:22:42You three are here with me just now,

0:22:42 > 0:22:45so I can go through it with yous over the next couple of days

0:22:45 > 0:22:47and you two, I'll go through your portfolios with you

0:22:47 > 0:22:49on Tuesday morning.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52But you're coming here full-time. Well done.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00Connor will spend three months at the academy before starting

0:23:00 > 0:23:02full-time at the Crow Road salon.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05Getting kept on is just an indescribable feeling,

0:23:05 > 0:23:07it's really good, it's overwhelming.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21Angel's big dance night has arrived. And to help her style the dancers'

0:23:21 > 0:23:25hair, she has brought along friends and fellow students Alijah

0:23:25 > 0:23:26and Bella.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28- Have yous come to get your hair done?- Jamming.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30Put another Kirby in.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33And you can just put that up in a wee bobble.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35Oh, my God, this is so funny, I've not even went over

0:23:35 > 0:23:37any of my dances and I have to go on stage.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40I've never done a show where they've all had their hair the exact same.

0:23:40 > 0:23:41If I could afford that,

0:23:41 > 0:23:44I would get hairdressers in all the time.

0:23:44 > 0:23:45They look lovely.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Well, Angel pie is getting really stressed out,

0:23:47 > 0:23:51I'm supposed to be dancing right now, but that's just bamboozled

0:23:51 > 0:23:53cos this needs to be done.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55With the opening dance fast approaching,

0:23:55 > 0:23:58Angel's been so busy doing the girls' hair,

0:23:58 > 0:24:01she hasn't had time for the final rehearsal.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05Good evening, ladies and gents. There is no flash photography or

0:24:05 > 0:24:08video camera-ing of the show tonight. If you're caught doing so,

0:24:08 > 0:24:11you'll be thrown out by the bouncers, OK?

0:24:11 > 0:24:13Please sit back and enjoy the show.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16Oh, my God, I think that's me. OK, so...love yous and leave yous.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18- Wish me luck. GIRLS:- Good luck!

0:24:36 > 0:24:39So my mum, she's pure like... And I was... Aw!

0:24:39 > 0:24:42Doing it, it was a lot of fun. Oh, my God. But it was funny.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45I'm on again and I'm pure stressing out.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47It's fun, though. I'm enjoying it, do you know what I mean?

0:24:47 > 0:24:50I'm enjoying it. My pleat stayed in, so it's all good.

0:24:50 > 0:24:51That's the main issue - hair.

0:24:53 > 0:24:54Time to go.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57MUSIC: Firework by Kerry Perry

0:25:08 > 0:25:09That was fab.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12I was stressing out about doing that cos I kept seeing you going...

0:25:38 > 0:25:42Students Laurie, Binky and Syd are helping out the art team

0:25:42 > 0:25:44backstage at the Scottish Style Awards.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51Today, what you're going to be doing is prepping all the hair.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53We'll do, like, a quick demonstration

0:25:53 > 0:25:55and we'll show you exactly what we want.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58- So we're going to have a good time, anyway.- Have fun.

0:25:58 > 0:26:00It'll be really good fun. So...high five?

0:26:12 > 0:26:14- Are you getting on OK, Syd?- Yeah.

0:26:17 > 0:26:22But just as the students get into their stride, there's a setback.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28The lecky's gone. The electricity has gone again.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33The man was just basically topping up on his power card,

0:26:33 > 0:26:36so we've got an extra £5 worth of electricity

0:26:36 > 0:26:39so that should get us through the blow drying stage.

0:26:41 > 0:26:42As the students keep working,

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Dylan joins Rainbow Room owner Linda on the red carpet.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47Over here, Linda. Yep.

0:26:47 > 0:26:51Tonight, I'll be giving out one of the awards, it's quite an honour.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56love the hair and love the whole ambience.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00After working hard all day, Binky takes a quick break to try

0:27:00 > 0:27:03and catch a glimpse of one of her heroes.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05Noel Gallagher is right behind me.

0:27:05 > 0:27:09Oh, my God. That is, like, an actual dream.

0:27:18 > 0:27:19I'm pure shaking.

0:27:21 > 0:27:22With the catwalk about to start,

0:27:22 > 0:27:26the students complete the finishing touches on their models' hair.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30Have yous had a run through and things?

0:27:30 > 0:27:32Yeah, we went through the run through like an hour ago or

0:27:32 > 0:27:34something like that but I think everyone is ready.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38- There you are, I think that is you. - Fab. Thank you.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54I think it's great for the kids from the academy to come and see

0:27:54 > 0:27:57stuff like this, but it's something that they aspire to do,

0:27:57 > 0:28:01something that they want to be a part of. It's amazing for them.

0:28:03 > 0:28:08So today, they were a bit kind of blown away. They've seen celebrities,

0:28:08 > 0:28:11they got to actually prep the models' hair.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14They were amazing, amazing. They've done a great job.

0:28:16 > 0:28:18Next time...

0:28:18 > 0:28:21- Are we ready to rock the house? - ALL: Yes!

0:28:21 > 0:28:24While the students compete for Assistant of the Year...

0:28:24 > 0:28:27We'll see if I get through or not. Agghh!

0:28:28 > 0:28:30..for one student, it could be game over.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33It's not something that I'm going to let get in my way,

0:28:33 > 0:28:34I'll fight against it.
