0:00:02 > 0:00:05Hairdressing is a glamorous industry...

0:00:05 > 0:00:09Unless you're bleeding from every orifice, you can't be off sick.

0:00:09 > 0:00:10..but it's also a competitive one,

0:00:10 > 0:00:13with more than 10,000 hairdressers in Scotland,

0:00:13 > 0:00:17where the top stylists can earn over £70,000 a year.

0:00:18 > 0:00:21Award-winning hairdressers Rainbow Room International

0:00:21 > 0:00:24run Scotland's biggest training academy...

0:00:24 > 0:00:26I have sent them home for having bad fake tan

0:00:26 > 0:00:28or when their make-up is not done properly.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31I went for more of a natural kinda look.

0:00:31 > 0:00:33..where they play just as hard as they work.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35It's like a big dysfunctional family.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37That's exactly what it's like.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40For one year, we follow students

0:00:40 > 0:00:43through their basic hairdressing qualification Level 2...

0:00:43 > 0:00:45I can do that, you know what I mean?

0:00:45 > 0:00:47And I just get nervous on the day.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51..and others in their second year Level 3 advanced qualification.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54My ambition is to be one of the best.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57You've got to be on it. Like, see if you're not on it one day,

0:00:57 > 0:00:59- honestly you're screwed, you're literally screwed.- Yeah.

0:00:59 > 0:01:04But do they have what it takes to make it through the Hair Academy?

0:01:05 > 0:01:08You're probably a better hairdresser than...

0:01:08 > 0:01:09- Everybody.- Aye(!)

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Coming up.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34The assistants are under pressure to host their own catwalk show...

0:01:34 > 0:01:36I'm a little stressed out right now.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39We'll see what happens. Hopefully, I don't die.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42..stylist Sarah Jane ties the knot...

0:01:42 > 0:01:44Och, I'm just dead excited, I just cannae wait.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47..and our Level 2 students find out if they're being kept on.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51We have to be very clear that we're getting the right person through.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02Our Level 2 assistants are coming towards the end of their first year

0:02:02 > 0:02:06at the Rainbow Rooms. It's an important stage in their training.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08Control that enthusiasm coming through there!

0:02:11 > 0:02:15Angel's friend Eilidh has come in to the academy for a funky haircut

0:02:15 > 0:02:18after recently shaving part of her hair off.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22I can't believe that. I would be freaked out if that was me.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Angel is being assessed on a short graduation

0:02:24 > 0:02:28and clipper over-comb cut by teacher Sarah Jane.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30I think we should take it a lot more funkier.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32Cos it's so heavy through the back. Ha-ha.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35And, although not part of the assessment,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38before Angel cuts the hair, she will be colouring it blonde.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Something completely different.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48I can't believe I'm making you go blonde.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50In my defence, your skin colour

0:02:50 > 0:02:52and your eye colour is telling you to go blonde.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55- How's your head feeling? Heavy?- Yeah.

0:02:58 > 0:02:59No going back now!

0:03:01 > 0:03:03But the bleach hasn't fully worked,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06so the plan has changed for Angel's client.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10It'd just be more fun to add different colours in it

0:03:10 > 0:03:13and make it quite mad that way. Quite exciting, innit?

0:03:13 > 0:03:16- OK, follow me.- Good, well done.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20And with their Rainbow Room career at stake,

0:03:20 > 0:03:23the pressure is on for all of the Level 2 students.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28I would be really, really ecstatic to be kept on in the Rainbow Room,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31it's like a really big deal to me.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34I'd be dead grateful to get kept on for my Level 3.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Once you've worked that hard to get through one level,

0:03:37 > 0:03:40it's just natural to want to go on and complete the whole thing.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45It's not me that makes the decision

0:03:45 > 0:03:47as to whether they're going to get kept on or not.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50The directors will find out from us how their training has gone.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54It's purely down to their own effort that they've put into it.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57I've still got a few colours to do,

0:03:57 > 0:03:58work my way through the cuts.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01It's fine, I'm enjoying it.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03Some bits I have been quite struggling

0:04:03 > 0:04:05and then other bits have been quite easy.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09Styling and setting, that's been quite hard so I'm just kinda, like,

0:04:09 > 0:04:12working with them a bit more and then eventually get them passed off.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17It's not just about passing off everything,

0:04:17 > 0:04:20it's about experience and the more heads of hair you can get through

0:04:20 > 0:04:22at the end of your qualification,

0:04:22 > 0:04:24you'll be a better hairdresser for it.

0:04:26 > 0:04:27On the salon floor,

0:04:27 > 0:04:31Angel has decided on some new colours for Eilidh's hair.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34So you want copper here and then red and copper through the ends.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36OK, I can do that, I'll mix it up.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43I'm very excited to see Angel.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45I'm freaking out, I'm telling you.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49- You're freaking out, Is that a good thing?- So hold the hair here.

0:04:49 > 0:04:50With the colour all done,

0:04:50 > 0:04:52it's just a matter of the finishing touches

0:04:52 > 0:04:54to the short graduation haircut.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00So this was your short graduation and then you over combed.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02- That was scissor over comb. - And clipper over comb.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05Yeah, and clipper over comb, yeah.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08- Yeah, on the top it was more just, like, different.- Mm-hm.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12So after finishing the haircut,

0:05:12 > 0:05:14it's time for Angel to find out

0:05:14 > 0:05:17if her short graduation assessment has been passed off.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20A really good transformation.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23And the client seems really pleased with it as well. Well done.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25Much more confidence in you now doing haircuts.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28- Pleased to tell you your assessment's been passed.- Thanks.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Keep up the good work and all that.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34I was nervous to start with

0:05:34 > 0:05:36because, obviously, the client's hair was a wee bit longer

0:05:36 > 0:05:40and then going dead short, so you just need to overcome that

0:05:40 > 0:05:42and not, like, show you're nervous or anything like that.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45But, no, I'm really, really pleased with my results.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49She's developed and come on so far throughout the year,

0:05:49 > 0:05:50it's been a joy to see.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52She's always been a big personality

0:05:52 > 0:05:54and now her skills kinda match her personality.

0:05:56 > 0:05:57Well, it's good.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03For the assistants in the Great Western Road salon,

0:06:03 > 0:06:06there's some welcome relief from their training

0:06:06 > 0:06:08as John is taking them for their annual awayday.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12This year, they're going white water rafting.

0:06:12 > 0:06:1516 hairdressers going down the Tay in a boat with wet suits on,

0:06:15 > 0:06:16so it should be good fun.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21Anybody else need some waterproof mascara?

0:06:21 > 0:06:25I brought some talcum powder as well. That'll help you get in a wet suit.

0:06:25 > 0:06:26- You ready?- Go!

0:06:34 > 0:06:36The stretch of river is six miles long

0:06:36 > 0:06:38and the second half is when the rapids begin

0:06:38 > 0:06:42and we save the biggest and best till the last, sound cool?

0:06:42 > 0:06:44Wicked.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49I love it. I'm going to wear this wetsuit on a night out

0:06:49 > 0:06:52- under my dress, it kind of sucks you in.- Like Spanx?- A wee bit.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56Get right in...

0:06:56 > 0:06:58SCREAMING

0:07:08 > 0:07:12Lean back together and dip the top of the helmet in the river.

0:07:12 > 0:07:13I'm not letting you fall in.

0:07:16 > 0:07:17Ah, Mammy!

0:07:36 > 0:07:37Two hours down the river

0:07:37 > 0:07:39and we're just one big unit,

0:07:39 > 0:07:41all the blades were going perfectly in the water,

0:07:41 > 0:07:45like Vikings! Perfect!

0:07:45 > 0:07:46Soaking wet, we had a great laugh.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55Academy teacher and stylist Sarah Jane

0:07:55 > 0:07:59is busy preparing for her wedding to army sergeant Jamie.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02- Sparkle, sparkle!- Yeah, they're lovely though.

0:08:02 > 0:08:03Preparations began at Christmas

0:08:03 > 0:08:06when he hid the engagement ring in a cracker.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09I thought it was a bit cowardly putting it in a cracker, but...

0:08:09 > 0:08:11No, it was lovely.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14I kinda went through that moment in my head millions of times,

0:08:14 > 0:08:16but it was perfect how you did it.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Yeah. And then I just cried for like 20 minutes.

0:08:21 > 0:08:22I looked like Alice Cooper!

0:08:24 > 0:08:27And with most of the preparations taken care of...

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Hello there, guys, how are you?

0:08:29 > 0:08:33..it's just a small matter of choosing their wedding rings.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38It's exciting. But I definitely like that. I like the simplicity of it.

0:08:38 > 0:08:44- How does that feel?- Weird!- Guys and girls are so different, aren't they?

0:08:44 > 0:08:47- I'm comfortable with mine. - Thankfully, yeah.

0:08:47 > 0:08:51- Do you think that's the one? - I think it might be.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53Oh, I don't want to take it off!

0:08:57 > 0:09:00But despite the excitement, fiance Jamie will be deploying

0:09:00 > 0:09:04to Afghanistan for one more tour before their marriage.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07When he's away, I think it hits me mostly

0:09:07 > 0:09:11about two weeks after he's gone and that's when I cannae phone him,

0:09:11 > 0:09:12I cannae pick up the phone.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15If I've had a good day or a bad day, I cannae share it wi' him.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17I'm fortunate enough that I've got loads of friends,

0:09:17 > 0:09:20loads of family to help get me through it.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Salon director Will looks after

0:09:30 > 0:09:32both the Stirling and Buchanan Street salons

0:09:32 > 0:09:35and has brought assistants Angel and Alijah in to tell them

0:09:35 > 0:09:39if they've passed their first year of formal training.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41We have to be very, very clear

0:09:41 > 0:09:46that we're getting the right person through. So with you two guys,

0:09:46 > 0:09:49we've talked about you, we've talked about you and, unfortunately,

0:09:49 > 0:09:51we've decided that...

0:09:53 > 0:09:55..you two are definitely people

0:09:55 > 0:09:58we would like to progress through to your second year.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00I was actually...

0:10:00 > 0:10:01..going to be let go.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06- That was cruelty.- Congratulations.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09Really good, well done for making it through to your Level 3.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12This is it, you're into the big time now.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16- How do you feel?- I feel nervous, good...- Excited?- Yeah!

0:10:16 > 0:10:18- Excited?- Yeah!

0:10:18 > 0:10:19Give me a high-five.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Let's get it on, we can do this today.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28That was actually sore!

0:10:29 > 0:10:30I'm getting on quite well.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34I've just finished Level 2 so I'm really happy about that.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37Now I'm moving onto harder things to do, like, colours and cut wise,

0:10:37 > 0:10:39so I'm quite excited.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41I passed my Level 2 so that's really good.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45But I've been doing it ever since I was 14, 15, 16, 17

0:10:45 > 0:10:48so, when you're 17, it's good to finally get a qualification of it

0:10:48 > 0:10:51and be like, "Yes. I can do..." Do you know what I mean?

0:10:51 > 0:10:55So officially Level 2 hairdresser, yeah.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57So I'm pure happy about that.

0:11:01 > 0:11:02..I'm happy about that.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Having started at the academy three months after Angel and Alijah,

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Austin and his class still have a few cuts to pass off

0:11:10 > 0:11:13before finishing their first year at the academy.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Good morning, everybody. What I want you to do today

0:11:15 > 0:11:18is have a wee look through your folders, write up about models

0:11:18 > 0:11:21you've got in and what yous are going to pass off today.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24To help him practise a cut and style dry,

0:11:24 > 0:11:28Austin's friend Hayley has come up to the academy to model for him.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30So about an inch off and no more?

0:11:30 > 0:11:32Maybe we should just cut it all off.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35- Just go for a bald and start again? - Aye.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40All right, Austin.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Why do you have to keep it as wet the whole way through?

0:11:43 > 0:11:46Cos if it's not all the same as what it was to start, it springs up.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54With the style dry done, teacher Tara has a quick look.

0:11:56 > 0:12:01- So is it what you hoped? - More. When are you next free?

0:12:01 > 0:12:03- Aw, that's nice. - You've done well.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10You know what I feel? I feel a bit like Rod Stewart. I'm kidding.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22I've got not too much left to do -

0:12:22 > 0:12:25a couple of colours and some styling and setting and then that'll be me.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29When I've finished, like, my Level 2, I think that will be like

0:12:29 > 0:12:32one of the highlights and achievements, so, waiting for that.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38With Jamie back safely from Afghanistan,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41the big day has finally arrived for Sarah Jane,

0:12:41 > 0:12:44but so far, she's taking it all in her stride.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48I might fall asleep, I'm that relaxed.

0:12:48 > 0:12:49Och, I'm just dead excited.

0:12:49 > 0:12:54I cannae wait to see all my planning and preparation just unfold.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Aye, just really excited, dead chilled out.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58I've had a lovely wee morning.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01And the responsibility for doing Sarah Jane's hair on the day

0:13:01 > 0:13:04has fallen to fellow stylist Tiffany.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06There will be a lot of hairdressers at the wedding

0:13:06 > 0:13:09so that will be a little bit of pressure.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14Sarah Jane told me last night that she wanted her hair down

0:13:14 > 0:13:16and all we'd been doing is trials for having it up

0:13:16 > 0:13:18so that's a little bit of pressure

0:13:18 > 0:13:21cos I don't know exactly how or what we're doing.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24We're just winging it the day, going with the flow.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26- It'll be good, no matter what.- Aye.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30And looking after Jamie's hair, is Sarah Jane's boss John.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34Only thing is, does that still look like him?

0:13:34 > 0:13:37No point in changing it so he looks like someone else. Yeah? OK.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39Thanks very much.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51CELEBRANT: Good afternoon, everyone.

0:13:54 > 0:13:55MUSIC DROWNS OUT SPEECH

0:14:02 > 0:14:04I solemnly and sincerely declare...

0:14:04 > 0:14:06..and sincerely declare...

0:14:06 > 0:14:09- ..that I Jamie... - ..that I Sarah Jane...

0:14:09 > 0:14:12- ..accept you, Sarah Jane... - ..accept you, Jamie...

0:14:12 > 0:14:14..as my lawful wedded wife.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18..as my lawful wedded husband.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25It is my very pleasant duty to pronounce you husband and wife.

0:14:46 > 0:14:47I've had the best day ever.

0:14:47 > 0:14:48I just can't wait to get on with it

0:14:48 > 0:14:50and have a party with my new husband!

0:15:06 > 0:15:10At the academy, the 12 salon directors have come together

0:15:10 > 0:15:12to discuss the forthcoming Assistants' Show.

0:15:14 > 0:15:18The Assistants' Show is a chance for every single assistant

0:15:18 > 0:15:23in this company to be able to show their parents and family and friends

0:15:23 > 0:15:25exactly what it is that they do.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28Alan and his team still have to decide

0:15:28 > 0:15:30on what format this year's show will take.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34Would it not be a good idea just for each salon to identify

0:15:34 > 0:15:38with a fashion and you do it like a runway show?

0:15:38 > 0:15:41If you've got five assistants that want to do five models,

0:15:41 > 0:15:46then it's up to them to style in whatever fashion you want to do.

0:15:46 > 0:15:48I think it's more important

0:15:48 > 0:15:51to actually have each salon identified individually.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55So why not... You've got two or three minutes of change

0:15:55 > 0:15:58and, as you said, like a runway and bang.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03It's not a competition, but it is really competitive

0:16:03 > 0:16:07and that's just the nature of hairdressing.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11There are no rules in it, but most people really want to be artistic

0:16:11 > 0:16:14and show off their talents and the skills they've learnt

0:16:14 > 0:16:16in the short time that they've been with us.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18Each salon has chosen a different theme

0:16:18 > 0:16:20for the models' hair and make-up.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23At the Uddingston salon, they've been inspired by the circus

0:16:23 > 0:16:26and are trying out some ideas ahead of the Assistants' Show.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30On the scalp, I'm going to have pleats and then I'm going to get

0:16:30 > 0:16:33some padding and it's going to have this big, long ponytail.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37I'm thinking about covering all this with blue and green here

0:16:37 > 0:16:42and then making some flowers and having them coming out of the top.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45This is ambitious, but it's fun because a lot of it is just padding

0:16:45 > 0:16:49and things like that, so it's more visual work than technical work.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52It's very, very important for us to put on a really good show,

0:16:52 > 0:16:55we want our guys to, you know,

0:16:55 > 0:16:58go out there and look great and do their best and have a lot of fun,

0:16:58 > 0:16:59so it's exciting.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12Level 3 assistant Lesley

0:17:12 > 0:17:16is based in the George Square salon run by Dylan.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18Lesley is a great girl, do you know that?

0:17:18 > 0:17:21I mean, she's got a very charismatic personality, she's very bubbly,

0:17:21 > 0:17:24she's always smiley, she's very creative

0:17:24 > 0:17:29and she's got all the aspects of what could potentially go on

0:17:29 > 0:17:30and make a good hairdresser.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33And when it comes to hair styling,

0:17:33 > 0:17:35Lesley has a unique way of remembering

0:17:35 > 0:17:37the left side of the head from the right.

0:17:37 > 0:17:41So I used to remember that you set the table and you always put

0:17:41 > 0:17:45the fork on the left and the fork's the loser and it's on the left,

0:17:45 > 0:17:49so, like, if your fork and your knife were to have a fight,

0:17:49 > 0:17:51your fork would lose.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53Naw, I just do that... >

0:17:54 > 0:17:58That's an L and that's not, so, like, left and not left.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01I was on a roundabout and he went go right and I went left.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04- Why is that funny? - You're so ridiculous!

0:18:06 > 0:18:09Having come to the end of her second year of training,

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Lesley has just been told she'll be getting kept on

0:18:11 > 0:18:14as a stylist in the George Square salon.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17In a way, I'm proud of myself for working so hard and getting it.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19Having worked with Jasmine and Dylan for so long,

0:18:19 > 0:18:21you feel like you owe it to them

0:18:21 > 0:18:25to do well in your next step and what you're doing.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28When she first started at the Rainbow Room,

0:18:28 > 0:18:31Lesley would commute daily back and forth to her hometown of Dunoon,

0:18:31 > 0:18:35before taking the decision to move to Glasgow full-time.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38Coming up to Glasgow has been a great thing for her

0:18:38 > 0:18:42and you can see the change in her in the last couple of years

0:18:42 > 0:18:46and she's became far more the SJP from Dunoon.

0:18:46 > 0:18:50Since moving to Glasgow,

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Lesley has lived in a city centre flat along with seven other girls.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56Tonight, it's one of her flatmates 21st birthdays

0:18:56 > 0:18:58and, as usual, Lesley is doing all the hair.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00Like, all the nurses in the ward are,

0:19:00 > 0:19:04"I love your hair." And I'm like, "Yeah, my flatmate's a hairdresser!"

0:19:04 > 0:19:07They all want her to do their hair.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11She does my sister's hair, and she does Beth's mum and sister's hair

0:19:11 > 0:19:14and Beth's sister wants her to do her wedding hair.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17It is really handy to know people in good places.

0:19:19 > 0:19:23With all the hair done, Lesley can finally join the party downstairs.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27Hi! How are you? Oh, my God, you're soaking!

0:19:30 > 0:19:33ALL: # Happy Birthday to you! # Hip hip hooray!

0:19:42 > 0:19:43The party's going really well.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47Everyone seems to be having a good time, the birthday girl seems happy.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49It always ends up pretty messy with these guys,

0:19:49 > 0:19:51so it'll be good to see what the rest of the night holds

0:19:51 > 0:19:54and, hopefully, there won't be too many sore heads in the morning.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05After working hard for the last year,

0:20:05 > 0:20:08it's time for our six remaining Level 2 students to find out

0:20:08 > 0:20:11if they're going to be kept on for their second year of training.

0:20:11 > 0:20:15This is you coming to the very end of your first year of apprenticeship

0:20:15 > 0:20:20and I've been really impressed with how far all of you have come on.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24There was seven of this group when we started and Roisin left.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27It is tough and I think you've probably realised

0:20:27 > 0:20:31that it was a little bit harder doing your first year apprenticeship

0:20:31 > 0:20:33than you thought it was going to be.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36So it's the moment of truth for our young assistants.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38The six of you have made it.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42Congratulations, well done.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44See you for the next year to do your Level 3.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49It was a surprise but it was really good to know

0:20:49 > 0:20:50that she's going to keep you on.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53I feel brilliant that I'm getting kept on.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57Not everybody gets kept on so I'm glad that I'm getting to do it.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00Moving up to the next level, I feel a bit scared.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03I feel a wee bit nervous because it's a bit more of a challenge

0:21:03 > 0:21:06but I kinda like more of a challenge.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10I feel great about being kept on. It's a good feeling.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13I'm so excited, I can't wait, I think it will be so good,

0:21:13 > 0:21:17loads of new things to learn and make yourself a better hairdresser.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28It's show time for the young students as they get the opportunity

0:21:28 > 0:21:31to flaunt their creative skills at the Assistants' Show.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36Angel and the other Stirling students

0:21:36 > 0:21:40have come to Buchanan Street to prepare the models.

0:21:40 > 0:21:41The theme we're doing is metallic

0:21:41 > 0:21:44so, basically, like, we had to spray paint the kirbies

0:21:44 > 0:21:45to get them, like, silver

0:21:45 > 0:21:48so when you go through the neon, the lights and everything like that,

0:21:48 > 0:21:50it will be nice and metallic-y.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56We're just doing like kirbies all the way back

0:21:56 > 0:21:59and then it's just going to be like a big afro with extensions,

0:21:59 > 0:22:01with metallic extensions all at the bottom.

0:22:01 > 0:22:05Our theme is kinda like dark fairy tale, avant garde kinda thing,

0:22:05 > 0:22:08so it's going to be kind of like a Mohican

0:22:08 > 0:22:10but all the sides are all slipped back and everything

0:22:10 > 0:22:14so it's going to be crazy messy and everything, so it's really cool.

0:22:21 > 0:22:22I actually can't look at this.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27I'm a little stressed out right now, there's a lot still to do,

0:22:27 > 0:22:29she needs to get her make-up done

0:22:29 > 0:22:31so, hopefully, that goes smoothly, but I don't know.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34I'm sure when it gets to it, I'll be pure freaking out

0:22:34 > 0:22:37but just now I'm all good, I'm still breathing.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39I've got my inhaler in my bag so it's all good.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42You think I'm kidding by the way!

0:22:48 > 0:22:51With time running out, the students head down to the venue

0:22:51 > 0:22:53where they will continue to prep the models

0:22:53 > 0:22:55and rehearse for the catwalk show tonight.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00I've enjoyed being in control of my model

0:23:00 > 0:23:03and being able to do what I want

0:23:03 > 0:23:04and doing massive, over the top.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07I like doing all that instead of just simple things.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10It's brought the team closer together, I'm proud of them.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13I cannae wait to see the whole effect and their wee faces after it.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16But it's nice to see the creative side coming out in them

0:23:16 > 0:23:17and, as I'm sure you can see,

0:23:17 > 0:23:21they've all got very, very grand ideas.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23They break the rules a lot easier than what we do.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25It's nice to see - it teaches us as well.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Hairdressing is a real creativity

0:23:30 > 0:23:32and that's why people come into the industry,

0:23:32 > 0:23:36so it's a really crucial part of the training that they get to show off.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42You start at the front and do your back combing,

0:23:42 > 0:23:45the way you normally would do it, and we'll try and create a shape.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48Happy chappy!

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Looking absolutely fantastic!

0:23:50 > 0:23:53Get all these out, doll.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58How long have we got till we go down?

0:23:58 > 0:24:02A couple of minutes and then come back up.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07- East Kilbride?- Yeah!- Brilliant.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10OK, Clarkston, you're on fourth.

0:24:10 > 0:24:14East Kilbride, you are on... One, two, three, four... ..sixth!

0:24:18 > 0:24:21It's a complete normal short, back and sides.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24It's what you would see every week on Buchanan Street in Glasgow.

0:24:28 > 0:24:32My hands are actually sweating right now, I'm not kidding.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34No, I am pure nervous.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37When I get really nervous, I don't know, I just die.

0:24:37 > 0:24:38We'll see what happens though.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42Hopefully I don't die. Hopefully not. I'm pure nervous.

0:24:44 > 0:24:45After a frantic afternoon,

0:24:45 > 0:24:49the families and friends arrive for the Assistants' Show.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51It's their first time on stage for a lot of them,

0:24:51 > 0:24:54so we're looking for a huge amount of support.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the first team.

0:24:58 > 0:24:59APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

0:25:24 > 0:25:29We wanted the audience to ask, like, how did we do it kind of thing?

0:25:29 > 0:25:33- So we did just a bunch of random stuff!- There you go,

0:25:33 > 0:25:36that's the technical description - "We did some random stuff"!

0:25:50 > 0:25:53It went so well! I loved it.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56It was, like, the first of many hair shows that we're going to do,

0:25:56 > 0:25:57for sure.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01A great experience, definitely. Loved it.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07At the start, I didn't know if I was more nervous or more excited

0:26:07 > 0:26:10but, see once they got on, I had a pure buzz and it was great.

0:26:16 > 0:26:20It was absolutely amazing. Amazing.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24I am so proud of every single person and I am absolutely delighted.

0:26:50 > 0:26:51My year has been great.

0:26:51 > 0:26:55It's just taught me a lot more about hairdressing

0:26:55 > 0:26:57and about life in general.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59Austin's got love bites!

0:26:59 > 0:27:01I feel good that I've been kept on.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03I didn't expect it, but I'm just going to go for it.

0:27:04 > 0:27:09I'm quite chuffed to actually start doing, like, more difficult things

0:27:09 > 0:27:11and give myself more of a challenge.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15I've learnt a lot since I started.

0:27:17 > 0:27:22I really want to be the sort of guy... "Who cut your hair?" "Jack."

0:27:23 > 0:27:24We're going to have words.

0:27:24 > 0:27:28I really would love to work for Rainbow Rooms when I'm a stylist.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31Is that OK? I don't want to get my hopes up too high

0:27:31 > 0:27:33but I think that it's possible.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35Don't you worry about that, my friend.

0:27:35 > 0:27:36When you first come in,

0:27:36 > 0:27:39you don't realise what you can be in hairdressing.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41- Binky...- What is it?- Star!

0:27:41 > 0:27:45You don't realise how busy things can get and how exciting it can be.

0:27:47 > 0:27:51I really want to go down the route of photo-shoots and catwalk shows.

0:27:51 > 0:27:52Being able to work up

0:27:52 > 0:27:56and being able to do that as a career would be amazing.

0:27:56 > 0:28:00I'm dead, dead, dead, dead, dead, dead chuffed.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06Oh, I'm having a moment!

0:28:06 > 0:28:07It's a smidge cheeseball!

0:28:09 > 0:28:10Let's go and do a model.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17The reality has made me want to do it even more, to be honest with you.

0:28:17 > 0:28:22I definitely still love it, still want to do it completely.

0:28:22 > 0:28:26It's just given me more drive to do...to become a better hairdresser.

0:28:26 > 0:28:27I feel really good.
