0:00:02 > 0:00:07Britain's young drivers are some of the most dangerous in Europe.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31In this series, we are following inexperienced teens to see what

0:00:31 > 0:00:33they are really like behind the wheel.

0:00:36 > 0:00:37Bloody hell!

0:00:37 > 0:00:40Fasten your seat belts, because each week,

0:00:40 > 0:00:44two novices will be let loose on the road in their family car.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47They believe we are filming a slice of modern teenage life,

0:00:47 > 0:00:51but in fact, it is all about their driving.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53- Oh, my God.- Oh!

0:00:53 > 0:00:56Red lights, red lights, that is why.

0:00:56 > 0:01:01What they don't know is that their parents will be watching their every manoeuvre.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04The cars are fitted with state-of-the-art cameras,

0:01:04 > 0:01:08and a hidden telemetry recorder that secretly tracks their every move.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14- She is posing!- Oh, no.

0:01:14 > 0:01:19Each teen will go on three road trips geared towards testing every

0:01:19 > 0:01:20aspect of their driving.

0:01:20 > 0:01:21Get out of the car, now!

0:01:21 > 0:01:25And at the end of it all, aided and abetted by a former traffic cop,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27the parents will have a decision to make.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31I weren't happy. I really had to keep my mouth shut.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34If they don't like the way the teens operate behind the wheel,

0:01:34 > 0:01:38both of them could end up with advanced driving lessons.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40But if they think they are good enough, we will give

0:01:40 > 0:01:46the parents the cash to buy their kid a car they can call their very own.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52Tonight, we meet two young adults from very different families.

0:01:52 > 0:01:58Full-time student and part-time party girl Lauri, who is the apple of her parents' eye.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Oh, no! Oh, no!

0:02:01 > 0:02:05And Dean, who is desperate to please his dad.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Sorry, sorry!

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Will it be reward or retribution for either of these youngsters

0:02:13 > 0:02:17- when their parents see them behind the wheel?- That was really close.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22- I'm going to kill him! - It is trust, and straight away he has betrayed that trust.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Welcome to Barely Legal Drivers.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33This is 20-year-old Lauri,

0:02:33 > 0:02:37a graphic design student from Kingston upon Thames.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41I am fun and spontaneous and a bit of a liability.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43So if you want a good night I will get you out there.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Lauri is known for enjoying the good life,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50rather than muddling along as a cash-strapped student.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53She has quite expensive tastes. So she likes the good life.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55She is very generous.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58We will go out and she will be like, "I will get the drinks."

0:02:58 > 0:03:00She always buy the first round, guaranteed.

0:03:00 > 0:03:05It won't even be one drink, it'll be a drink, a Jaegerbomb, three shots.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08When she is not studying in Bournemouth, Lauri lives

0:03:08 > 0:03:10at home with her family.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Mum Jane, who is a teacher, uni lecturer dad Harry,

0:03:13 > 0:03:18- and sister Iona.- Lauri and Iona are fabulous friends.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21- Me and my sister are like this. - Like her best friend, really.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24My sister especially gets on with my parents very well,

0:03:24 > 0:03:26especially when she needs money.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28They would bleed us dry.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31They pay my rent, they pay for me to live at the moment,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34they are working to support me, which I do feel guilty about

0:03:34 > 0:03:38but hopefully when I am older and they need a care home I will pay for that!

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Having passed her test first time,

0:03:41 > 0:03:46Lauri was given her very own motor, a Ford Ka for her 18th birthday.

0:03:46 > 0:03:51That is the one thing that made her feel really independent and made her feel really grown up.

0:03:51 > 0:03:56It was not long before she became a driving statistic.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59Had a big crash at 80mph, a huge Land Rover just spun into the side of me.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03My car just literally went straight into the central reservation.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06I was at work and got the phone call, "Your daughter has been

0:04:06 > 0:04:09"involved in a car accident," and you are just thinking the worst.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12It scared the ... out of me.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15I was so scared to go back on motorways after that.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18In early 2011 Lauri had a second crash.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22This time, she was banned from driving for 12 months.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27- She hasn't had a car since.- It is unreal how much I miss driving.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29It kills me.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Lauri has no idea what is really going on, or that Mum

0:04:32 > 0:04:35and Dad will be secretly watching her week.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Both in and out of her mum's car.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40I value my car, the thought of Lauri getting in it fills me

0:04:40 > 0:04:44- with complete... Oh, my God. - I think it is great!

0:04:45 > 0:04:50This is 18-year-old Dean, a supermarket worker from Polegate, near Eastbourne.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55I just want an honest life, an honest job. Just enjoy myself, really.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Only child Dean's parents are separated

0:04:58 > 0:05:01and he lives at home with his dad, Denzil.

0:05:01 > 0:05:06We get on most of the time but sometimes he can drive me to an angry stage very quickly.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Put it on a plate!

0:05:08 > 0:05:11I leave one plate out on the side and he will go through the roof.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13He's a nightmare for leaving everything on all the time.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15Just disappearing out the door.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18I thought I would stick a sign on the door and hope it works.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20I haven't actually read it once, the whole way through.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Dean was a troubled teen,

0:05:22 > 0:05:26and last year family relations hit breaking point.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28I was going nowhere at all, I couldn't get a job,

0:05:28 > 0:05:32it was horrible. It was a really dark time in my life actually.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34I fell out with my dad over various things

0:05:34 > 0:05:36and I got kicked out to my mum's.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39We had a disagreement where I said to him,

0:05:39 > 0:05:41"If you don't like it, go and look after yourself."

0:05:41 > 0:05:43So with that, to my surprise, he did.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47Me and my mum had a fallout as well and that left me

0:05:47 > 0:05:52basically with nowhere. I managed to get in a hostel, really nasty place.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Throughout this difficult time in his life,

0:05:57 > 0:06:00his friends were a constant support.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02He hasn't changed as a person, he is the same Dean.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06But he has matured a lot. I am proud of him. We are all proud of him.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09We were all worried about him, how he would take it,

0:06:09 > 0:06:12but he just got on with it, really. That's what he does.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Dean stuck it out in the hostel for six months

0:06:15 > 0:06:19and wouldn't come home till he'd got a job and could pay his own way.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21It has done him the world of good,

0:06:21 > 0:06:25he is quite a way forward from where he was, so, that is pleasing.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29It is like getting blood out of a stone but I love getting my dad to say he is proud of me.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31It is not easily said.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37Dean hasn't been behind the wheel since his test, two months ago.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40To get around this week, he is going to be driving his mum's car.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43I am hoping that in the back of his mind I am there, my car!

0:06:43 > 0:06:47So, he will be taking care of it.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51Should he do something wrong, I will feel let down by that,

0:06:51 > 0:06:53and I will have something to say.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Neither Lauri or Dean have any idea

0:06:56 > 0:07:00that their skills behind the wheel will be put to the test, and that

0:07:00 > 0:07:03both of them could be driving into the sunset in a motor of their own.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12It is Sunday night in Polegate and Dean

0:07:12 > 0:07:18and his parents are about to chow down on chow mein.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20I'm hungry.

0:07:20 > 0:07:25- Try some of this, have some of it. - I will try a little bit.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29- Broaden your horizons.- I don't want none of that!- Try a bit of it!

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Just try a bit of it.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35Although Lynn and Denzil separated three years ago, they remain close

0:07:35 > 0:07:39and have got together tonight because they have a surprise for Dean.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42What would you say if we said we got you insured on your mum's car?

0:07:42 > 0:07:48- Really?- Really.- The key to my car, look after it.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52Because it might only be a little Fiat Punto but it is mine

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- and I need it.- We are trusting you to drive it.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59- No smoking in it. - Responsibly as well.- No?

0:07:59 > 0:08:01No smoking in it.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05- Not at all?- You can't smoke when you're driving.- I will be fine.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09- You know if I say that I mean it. - I will be fine. Thank you.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11I appreciate it.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13Dean thinks he has been given the keys to his freedom.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17Little does he know his parents will be watching his every move.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24On the outskirts of London, Lauri is back from university

0:08:24 > 0:08:27for reading week to spend quality time with her family.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30- We are going rock climbing tomorrow. - Are you going like...

0:08:30 > 0:08:35dressed like that? Are you going to wear those disco pants?

0:08:35 > 0:08:39Your arse going up like Bridget Jones!

0:08:39 > 0:08:42Mum Jane has a generous offer.

0:08:42 > 0:08:47- If you are really careful... Yes.- You can drive my car.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49What do you mean, drive your car?

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Dad and I thought it is about time you got yourself back into driving.

0:08:53 > 0:08:58But you're going to have to be really careful.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02- Thank you. It's mine now.- You're not going to be sassy in my car!

0:09:03 > 0:09:05Keep in mind my KA

0:09:05 > 0:09:09and how I looked after that and the last time you saw that.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Yes, I do!

0:09:11 > 0:09:15Lauri believes that this is to give her some independence for her week back home.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17She has no idea.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26The next morning in Kingston, Lauri is getting ready for a day

0:09:26 > 0:09:31- out with her sister Iona and a few mates.- Going rock climbing.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34But good luck for Iona because she's not feeling very well.

0:09:34 > 0:09:40I'm quite keen. I would like to beat my sister up there.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44Sibling rivalry aside, today will be Lauri's first drive in two years.

0:09:44 > 0:09:49Mum Jane has a few handy tips on not getting lost.

0:09:49 > 0:09:54Will you be able to work out from the TomTom thing how to go?

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Somebody comes on, don't they? You can change whoever it is.

0:09:56 > 0:10:01- Like Stephen Fry or somebody like that.- Thanks, Mum(!)

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Dressed appropriately for rock climbing,

0:10:03 > 0:10:05Lauri and sister Iona set off.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11Lauri is picking up old college mate Natalie who lives around the corner

0:10:11 > 0:10:15then heading up to Harrow in north London to pick up uni mate Sara.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18Then they're going to a local leisure centre.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23It is Lauri's first drive since her last car crash.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Is she going to let nerves get the better of her?

0:10:25 > 0:10:30- I don't know if I should be coming out this lane.- That is yes, then.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35Lauri picks up Natalie and rather than follow her mum's advice

0:10:35 > 0:10:41- she has gone for little sister as her sat nav voice.- Where am I going? Iona?

0:10:41 > 0:10:43It is just saying, go round.

0:10:43 > 0:10:48Stressed, Lauri starts making a few simple mistakes.

0:10:48 > 0:10:53- Shit, have I got to be in there. - That is what I said! Shit!

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Aaah! I'm going!

0:10:56 > 0:11:02Lauri may be stressed and nervous but does that make her cautious? No.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05That was almost the end of Mum's car.

0:11:05 > 0:11:06God, that was close, Lauri!

0:11:06 > 0:11:10With Sara on board, they arrive at the leisure centre,

0:11:10 > 0:11:13all looking like they're going on a night out rather than rock climbing.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17- I'm going to win, probably. I am not going to lie.- No, you're not.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22I might get scouted for this, I am really sorry, but pro rock climbing.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27Once inside, the girls begin to realise their fashion faux pas.

0:11:28 > 0:11:32This is really not flattering. My camel toe.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36We are all going to have a camel.

0:11:36 > 0:11:42I am glad I am facing the wall, to be honest. I don't know what to say.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47Costumes sorted, let's see how good these girls are.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50I'm shaking! I don't like it! Get me down!

0:11:50 > 0:11:52Not very, then!

0:11:54 > 0:11:55LAUGHTER

0:11:57 > 0:12:02Soon, the sisterly competitive spirit begins to kick in.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06Lauri shows her baby sister how to rock climb like a...

0:12:06 > 0:12:09well, like a rock climber.

0:12:09 > 0:12:1118 seconds, not bad.

0:12:12 > 0:12:18Next up is Iona, who gets to the top in half the time.

0:12:18 > 0:12:24- I am feeling victory!- Nine seconds! I am a little bit annoyed.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26She looks so much better than me. But look how smug she is!

0:12:32 > 0:12:35The girls set off and a slightly humbled Lauri now

0:12:35 > 0:12:40- has the reverse journey back to south London.- Oh, no!

0:12:42 > 0:12:45The reason the bus has stopped is because of a zebra crossing.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48But Lauri illegally drives right over it,

0:12:48 > 0:12:51seemingly unaware there are people starting to cross it.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56Soon, Lauri's human sat nav starts playing up again.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00- You were going, third exit? - Yeah, it said third exit!

0:13:00 > 0:13:05You look at it then! You are meant to be controlling, you are driving! I am not a map!

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Put it over there, go on, smartarse!

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Oh, I'm duh!

0:13:13 > 0:13:19And then, Lauri disproves once and for all the myth that all women can multitask.

0:13:19 > 0:13:20Where am I going?

0:13:20 > 0:13:24- Third exit!- I can't count and drive! - Then you should not be on the road!

0:13:24 > 0:13:26One, two, three!

0:13:26 > 0:13:29With the light fading, the sparring sisters are at it again.

0:13:29 > 0:13:35I have just basically spelled it out. I said go up here!

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Not what is needed when you should be concentrating on the road.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42- You do it, go on, take it. - I don't need it now.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Managing not to kill each other, finally,

0:13:44 > 0:13:47they all make it back home in one piece.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55The following day, Lauri's parents sit down for a secret glimpse

0:13:55 > 0:14:00- into her first drive since her car crash two years ago.- Ready?

0:14:01 > 0:14:05This is the start of Harry and Jane's mission to

0:14:05 > 0:14:09determine if Lauri deserves her own car or not.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11- Shit, have I got to be in there?- Yes.

0:14:11 > 0:14:12That's what I said! Shit.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16It is really important at this point to say that no-one in this house ever swears.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19Aah! I'm going.

0:14:19 > 0:14:23- My God, that was pretty close, Lauri.- That was close.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26I have only had two accidents and both of them were doing that.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30She should have stopped the car and let those people cross the road.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34- You're saying I can go... - I said go up here!

0:14:35 > 0:14:39I think the fact that they are sisters, they are feeding

0:14:39 > 0:14:42off each other and actually if you or I were there...

0:14:42 > 0:14:47She is just at that sort of gobby age but that is not a good idea in the car.

0:14:47 > 0:14:51I think the thing that we missed when we think back to her accident,

0:14:51 > 0:14:53I think there was a bit of a knock to her confidence.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57I think having that opportunity to get behind the wheel again,

0:14:57 > 0:15:00she has done pretty well actually.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04Lauri's parents may think she has done well, but with a lack of

0:15:04 > 0:15:08concentration and dangerously driving over the zebra crossing she is going

0:15:08 > 0:15:13to have to do a lot better in her next two journeys to get the car.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21One and a half hours away on the south coast,

0:15:21 > 0:15:24and Dean is getting ready for a day out with his mates.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26It is nice that we finally get to go out and do something,

0:15:26 > 0:15:33we haven't done anything in a while. It's about time we did, to be honest. Now I have a car I have more freedom.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35We can do what we want.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39Dean is going from his house in Polegate near Eastbourne to Brighton.

0:15:39 > 0:15:44It is a journey of 21 miles involving country lanes and city streets

0:15:44 > 0:15:46and should take just over half an hour.

0:15:46 > 0:15:51- But first, he has to pick up mates Sophie and Tyler.- All right, mate!

0:15:51 > 0:15:54- All right, mate?- And then Jack.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56All right, mate?

0:15:58 > 0:16:02Driving virgin Dean has never driven without a driving instructor

0:16:02 > 0:16:03sat next to him.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05How will he cope?

0:16:11 > 0:16:14Not sure his mum is going to appreciate the smoking.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26And it's all going surprisingly well.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30Until he hits Brighton's infamous one-way system.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32Are we supposed to come down here?

0:16:34 > 0:16:37- Oh, no! Are you- BLEEP- kidding me? It is buses only.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39Ignoring all of the many signs,

0:16:39 > 0:16:45Dean is slap bang in the middle of a buses-only route and that will cost him 60 smackers.

0:16:45 > 0:16:50Sophie, no! What have you done?

0:16:53 > 0:16:55People are nodding their heads at us.

0:16:55 > 0:17:00Then Dean spends almost an hour looking for a car park.

0:17:02 > 0:17:08I need someone to watch that bollard. I know, I'm watching it. I'll just leave it like that.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10Look, they have a baby.

0:17:10 > 0:17:14Trust me, I have done this before. It just takes ages.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18- Took us an hour and a half. - Never again.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22Finally, having taken half an hour to park,

0:17:22 > 0:17:27everyone hits Brighton seafront and talk turns to future trips.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31- Let's drive to Amsterdam. - You don't want to drive there.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38And what day to the seaside would be complete without

0:17:38 > 0:17:44a trip to the pub? Dean must drive everyone back. Will he have a drink?

0:17:44 > 0:17:46Nope, he is having a Coke.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48I'm not tempted to have a drink. I'm sensible like that.

0:17:48 > 0:17:53They are my mates and they are my responsibility in my car so I will make sure they are safe.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57I don't want to be responsible for crashing with them in it.

0:17:57 > 0:18:02It is an attitude that should please notoriously hard-to-please dad Denzil.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05Denzil is a bit intimidating sometimes.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Nicest bloke. Wouldn't want to cross them.

0:18:08 > 0:18:12He's not horrible, not the sort of person it would be easy to cross.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15- Most people are. - He's not short tempered, either.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18Not with other people. But with me, he is. Obviously that is different.

0:18:18 > 0:18:22- I am quite close to my mum and dad. - I think we all are.

0:18:22 > 0:18:26- When I was younger, I didn't get on with him.- No, I remember.

0:18:26 > 0:18:31- Recently he has been all right. - He has changed quite a lot, your dad. He is nicer now.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35As long as you get on with him at the end of the day that is what matters.

0:18:39 > 0:18:43As the sun sets, Dean makes the vital preparations for the journey home.

0:18:43 > 0:18:48- Shit, I haven't got my headlights on. No, that's full beam. How do I get them- BLEEP- normal?

0:18:48 > 0:18:50I think they are on now.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56Stressed, Dean ignores his mum's big rule and lights up again.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Now, as long as he keeps out of bus lanes...

0:18:59 > 0:19:06- Bus lane, for- BLEEP- sake! You dickhead!- Oh, dear!- That is £120 in fines, now.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08Someone needs to give me directions.

0:19:08 > 0:19:13- I'm just going to pull over somewhere in a minute because I am not driving home. I am a- BLEEP- idiot.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16Once out of Brighton, Dean takes his eye off the speedometer.

0:19:17 > 0:19:21If the police stopped him now going just over 40 in a 30 zone,

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Dean could get points on his licence.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27Thankfully, Dean slows down and gets his passengers home safely.

0:19:27 > 0:19:32See you, Sophie. See you in a bit, mate.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38- Hiya!- How are you?- Yeah, all right.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41The following day, Lynn has come round to Denzil's house to

0:19:41 > 0:19:45watch their son's first drive since he passed his test.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51My dad did say he would be so disappointed if we all smoked in the car.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55What is he doing? He is smoking a fag in my car!

0:19:55 > 0:19:57Did I not say really clearly,

0:19:57 > 0:20:00you and your mates are not smoking in my car?

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Are you all right, yeah?

0:20:02 > 0:20:04I am responsible for you lot.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07- That is good.- Brilliant. I like that.- I'm proud of that.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09- Are you- BLEEP- kidding me? It's buses only, Sophie!

0:20:09 > 0:20:11I'm going to kill him!

0:20:15 > 0:20:19He is starting to panic because he has realised he's made a mistake.

0:20:19 > 0:20:20Which is good.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28Not impressed with the speeding at all.

0:20:28 > 0:20:29It is difficult for me.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32I am Dean's harshest critic and I am probably the one

0:20:32 > 0:20:37person that he would like to sort of try and impress if he can.

0:20:37 > 0:20:38It is nice to see him

0:20:38 > 0:20:42taking responsibility for the people in the car. And being aware of that.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46That is really important. That is nice to see.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49Dean's parents may have been pleased with his responsible attitude

0:20:49 > 0:20:53towards his passengers, but speeding and driving in a bus lane means

0:20:53 > 0:20:57the trip to Brighton has rocked his chances of getting the car.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Coming up - Lauri tunes up.

0:21:01 > 0:21:06# Scaramouche, Scaramouche will you do the fandango? #

0:21:06 > 0:21:08And Dean has a breakdown.

0:21:08 > 0:21:13- BLEEP- hell, man! I will stop, I will stop it.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23Up in the big smoke and it is almost halfway through Lauri's week.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26She is at home planning her night on the town.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28I will pick up Natalie and then drive up into Soho

0:21:28 > 0:21:31and meet Charlotte and Sophie for some dinner.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33I am looking to find where to park,

0:21:33 > 0:21:36because you know what it is like in London.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39Lauri is going from her house to pick up Natalie

0:21:39 > 0:21:44and then drive into Soho. It's a distance of 13 miles.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48It is not far but central London, one of the most congested cities in

0:21:48 > 0:21:52the world at night, is no picnic for an already nervous driver.

0:21:54 > 0:21:59Tonight is also Lauri's first time as designated driver in over two years.

0:21:59 > 0:22:04With Nat on board, the next stop is Soho.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07- Where am I going?- Just round.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12- No point in saying left or right, you don't know your left and right. - I do know it now.

0:22:12 > 0:22:17Not concentrating, Lauri slams on her brakes at some traffic lights.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20My life flashed before my eyes just then.

0:22:20 > 0:22:24- Breathe in, girls.- Oh!

0:22:26 > 0:22:29- Sweet Jesus.- OK, go.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36- Keep going!- I am letting him go. - Yes, but you can't stop in there.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43With her sensible preplanned parking, the girls arrive

0:22:43 > 0:22:47at the restaurant and sit down with uni mates Charlotte and Sophie.

0:22:47 > 0:22:51- What do you want to drink? Wine?- What is Lauri going to drink?

0:22:51 > 0:22:54- Bitter lemonade. - Bitter lemonade, very sensible.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57I haven't been a designated driver for years.

0:22:57 > 0:23:01Soon, the topic of Lauri's unique understanding of student budgeting comes up.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03You eat out a lot, don't you, at uni?

0:23:03 > 0:23:05Me and Sara eat out, like, all the time.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08She's first one to the bar when we get in a club, like.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10No hanging about, it's straight to the bar.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13When she got drunk on Thursday, she thought she was a millionaire

0:23:13 > 0:23:17and just got litres of sambuca. Let's get four each!

0:23:17 > 0:23:20- Let's just get slaughtered! - You don't have to queue again.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24I was going to get all the rounds in now, just do a massive round.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28Don't you think, like, when we graduate, out of all of us,

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Lauri's going to marry like the richest man?

0:23:31 > 0:23:33- Really?- Yeah. You'll be a little WAG

0:23:33 > 0:23:36and your little pretty children will all trot through.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38Thank you, cheers.

0:23:38 > 0:23:42With that endorsement ringing in her ears, it's time for a very

0:23:42 > 0:23:45sober Lauri to get out of central London and go back home.

0:23:48 > 0:23:52That's if she can get out of the car park.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54Oh, sweet Jesus!

0:23:57 > 0:23:59Lauri hasn't noticed

0:23:59 > 0:24:04but she launches herself into the street without her lights on.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07Within minutes, though, another driver warns her.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09I haven't got my lights on.

0:24:11 > 0:24:12Thank you.

0:24:17 > 0:24:23Quite proud that we've got all the way back from central with no sat nav.

0:24:23 > 0:24:29Oh! My IQ just raised from ten to thousands.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34- What is an IQ level? - Intelligence questionnaire?

0:24:34 > 0:24:36Intelligence...

0:24:36 > 0:24:40Yeah, I think you'll find it's intelligence quotient.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Before the girls start on the meaning of life,

0:24:43 > 0:24:46Nat's dropped off and Lauri gets home safe and sound.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53Another night and another night out for Lauri.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56This time, she's leaving the car at home

0:24:56 > 0:25:00and going into the West End by cab with Iona, Natalie and Sara.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03All wired up and they're going to just look like pants at the back.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07Luckily, Mum's on hand to make sure there's not too much flesh on show.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11- It's just a bit like you've got a T-shirt.- Yeah, but it's not.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13- Just pull it down.- Yeah.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17At least your bra isn't hanging out, Lauri.

0:25:20 > 0:25:25An hour later and these four poor students make it to the club.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29Cash-strapped or not, it isn't long before all the girls

0:25:29 > 0:25:33are living the lifestyle to which Lauri has become accustomed.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37So, what's the secret to Lauri living the good life

0:25:37 > 0:25:38whilst on a student budget?

0:25:38 > 0:25:42If you're a group of girls, you sort of don't have to pay for anything.

0:25:42 > 0:25:46- It's really good, so... - Yeah, men are nice and generous!

0:25:46 > 0:25:51- All the time.- We're having a good time. Always have a good time.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53Yeah.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57Fuelled by very expensive alcohol the girls didn't buy themselves,

0:25:57 > 0:26:00the night comes to an end.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07The following day near Kingston, Lauri's parents settle down for

0:26:07 > 0:26:11a front-row seat into the private life of their eldest daughter.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13Hit the button.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17First up, her second drive into Soho for dinner.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Oh! Ooh!

0:26:21 > 0:26:23It's like 7ft. Ooh!

0:26:23 > 0:26:27- Keep going.- Got to say that, that is one up on mum!

0:26:27 > 0:26:30She's actually gone through a yellow box and got out the other side.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33Lauri's going to marry like the richest man.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36- Really?- That's a really good idea!

0:26:36 > 0:26:37Bitter lemonade.

0:26:37 > 0:26:41That's really, really good, I think, from Lauri's perspective,

0:26:41 > 0:26:46that she's just not even considering drinking, driving.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49And then her night out clubbing.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52- They're having a good time.- No, that's how I think they would be.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55They'd just be having a laugh, they'd be having a dance.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57It's not a question of having expensive taste.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00She just knows what she likes and what she doesn't like.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03- What about that? - She's a lot more confident

0:27:03 > 0:27:05and she seems to be handling the car a lot better.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07It doesn't seem to be so jerky.

0:27:07 > 0:27:12I was genuinely expecting her to drive...slightly worse,

0:27:12 > 0:27:17or make more mistakes, but I think she's doing really well.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20But Harry and Jane won't be alone in deciding

0:27:20 > 0:27:24whether Lauri's performance warrants a car or advanced driving lessons.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27Former traffic cop Judith Roberts has also been casting

0:27:27 > 0:27:30a critical eye on Lauri's driving.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33With 20 years' experience on the force,

0:27:33 > 0:27:36Judith's job is to help and advise Lauri's parents.

0:27:36 > 0:27:40Going into London, she was a bit anxious.

0:27:40 > 0:27:44I'm seeing a pattern here of lack of concentration, she's not looking

0:27:44 > 0:27:47ahead, she's not planning, she's not aware of what's going on around her.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49All in all, I think

0:27:49 > 0:27:52she would probably benefit from some advanced driving lessons.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55Just to give her back her self-confidence.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58Lauri's got one more journey to turn things around,

0:27:58 > 0:28:02otherwise she won't have a chance of getting the car.

0:28:06 > 0:28:10We're in Polegate, near Eastbourne, and Dean,

0:28:10 > 0:28:13who has plans to join the Army, is going paintballing with some mates.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16When do you get the chance to shoot each other?

0:28:16 > 0:28:19I don't know why, but you get some weird satisfaction

0:28:19 > 0:28:21when you shoot someone else.

0:28:21 > 0:28:26Obviously, they're paintballs, but... Yeah, it's a good laugh.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28Dean is driving near to Burgess Hill,

0:28:28 > 0:28:32a distance of only 25 miles, which should take him 40 minutes,

0:28:32 > 0:28:36provided he can navigate there correctly along the A roads.

0:28:36 > 0:28:38Shut the door behind you, obviously.

0:28:38 > 0:28:41He's taking Jack, Sophie, Ginge and Harry.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43With even more passengers than last time,

0:28:43 > 0:28:46this will really test Dean's motor skills.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51As well as his mum's car's suspension.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53Shit!

0:28:55 > 0:28:57Sorry, sorry.

0:28:57 > 0:28:58- Yes!- Yay(!)

0:28:58 > 0:29:00Embarrassment over, they're off.

0:29:04 > 0:29:09Dean's remembered the basics - mirror, cigarette, manoeuvre.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12- It's nicer driving when you have a fag.- Yeah.

0:29:12 > 0:29:14Mum's not going to be impressed.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21This may look like fun,

0:29:21 > 0:29:25but aquaplaning is a common cause of accidents in wet weather.

0:29:25 > 0:29:26Not that Dean seems to care.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29Test your brakes when going through water.

0:29:29 > 0:29:32Then, the route to the paintballing goes a little

0:29:32 > 0:29:34bit off the beaten track.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37Sorry, Mum. Car's going to get a bit muddy.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41- Ooh!- BLEEP- What was that crunch? - My mum's going to- BLEEP- hate me.

0:29:41 > 0:29:43CLUNK

0:29:43 > 0:29:45Ooh!

0:29:45 > 0:29:46Goodbye, exhaust.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49Your exhaust, mate, it's over there!

0:29:54 > 0:29:58Dean has got everyone there in one piece, unlike Mum's car.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00It's time for paintballing.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04And nothing says friendship like a shot to the face.

0:30:14 > 0:30:17With ammunition finished, a truce is called and the conversation

0:30:17 > 0:30:21naturally comes round to Dean wanting to join the Army.

0:30:21 > 0:30:25The main people I'd want to be proud of me would be Mum and Dad.

0:30:25 > 0:30:27Mum's going to be a bit harder to convince, obviously.

0:30:27 > 0:30:31She despises the idea, that's the only way to put it. She hates it.

0:30:31 > 0:30:33My dad's like, "Yeah, go for it."

0:30:33 > 0:30:37I'm sure your mum... It's more of a self-sense of achievement as well.

0:30:37 > 0:30:40I don't want to be known as Dean who works at the supermarket

0:30:40 > 0:30:45all his life. That's not where I see my life going. Not at all.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48With the exhaust still attached to his mum's car,

0:30:48 > 0:30:52Dean drives his squadron back to base with no casualties.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54Plenty of room to get out.

0:30:55 > 0:31:00The next day in Eastbourne, Dean meets up with Jack for lunch.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03He's one of the friends who stood by Dean during his six months

0:31:03 > 0:31:04living in the hostel.

0:31:04 > 0:31:07I went there and said I'm not coming home until I've got a job

0:31:07 > 0:31:10- and sorted myself out and I can look after myself.- And you've done that.

0:31:10 > 0:31:14- I did it. It took me six months. - You did it.- But I did it.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17- I wouldn't want to do it again.- No.

0:31:17 > 0:31:21But it's done you good more than bad.

0:31:21 > 0:31:25- Yeah, at least I get on with my dad now.- Yeah, that's true.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28Now I'm paying rent and stuff. Yeah, it's nice.

0:31:28 > 0:31:30He's looking at you as a man now, not as a boy.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32I wouldn't go that far.

0:31:32 > 0:31:36- In a way, they do treat me like I'm 16 still, sort of thing.- Yeah.

0:31:36 > 0:31:37Like rules and stuff like that.

0:31:37 > 0:31:41It's as if they're doing that for the fact they don't trust me.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44- It's just gaining that trust, that's the hard part.- Yeah.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46Don't lose it either.

0:31:46 > 0:31:47Exactly.

0:31:47 > 0:31:49Lovely, thank you, mate.

0:31:52 > 0:31:56Later on that day, Dean heads out for a night in Eastbourne.

0:31:58 > 0:32:02But he's decided to forgo the booze and play taxi driver to Jack

0:32:02 > 0:32:04and Ginge.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07I'll drive tonight. That's why I'm not drinking now.

0:32:07 > 0:32:09I've got to get the car home tonight.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12Respect to Dean as well, for not drinking.

0:32:17 > 0:32:21Ah, the spirits are strong but the flesh is weak.

0:32:29 > 0:32:32Basically, they decided to trap me into having a drink.

0:32:32 > 0:32:35- I've had a bit of a drink, as you can probably- BLEEP- tell.

0:32:35 > 0:32:37I'm a bit mashed right now.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40I'm not driving home whatsoever.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43I'm going to take them home in the morning, or the afternoon,

0:32:43 > 0:32:45whatever 12 hours works out as.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47Oh, shit.

0:32:47 > 0:32:51No, because obviously I promised my dad 12 hours bottle to throttle.

0:32:51 > 0:32:54I've dropped my fag again.

0:32:54 > 0:32:59And as long as I keep to my dad's golden rules, I can't annoy him.

0:32:59 > 0:33:00I can't.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02After wisely abandoning the car,

0:33:02 > 0:33:05Dean and his mates wander off into the night.

0:33:10 > 0:33:13The following evening, Dean's parents meet up secretly

0:33:13 > 0:33:16to watch him out and about.

0:33:16 > 0:33:19- Hiya. All right? - Yeah, you?- Not too bad.

0:33:19 > 0:33:23First up, the second drive, to paintballing.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26Who's brave enough to press the start button then?

0:33:26 > 0:33:28- Want me to?- Yeah.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32One, two, three...five.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35So that's three in the back of my car.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38Probably won't get it off the driveway!

0:33:38 > 0:33:41Another cigarette being lit there.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43It's almost like he's done it to wind you up.

0:33:43 > 0:33:46I'm not sure I want to watch any more. Disappointed.

0:33:49 > 0:33:52He's clearly got no clue about aquaplaning, has he?

0:33:52 > 0:33:56- That looked really dangerous to me. - He wasn't slowing down.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58No, he didn't slow down. There's a car coming towards him.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00Not impressed at all.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03The main people I want to be proud of me are Mum and Dad.

0:34:03 > 0:34:07Mum's going to be a bit harder to convince, obviously.

0:34:07 > 0:34:10She despises the idea, that's the only way to put it.

0:34:11 > 0:34:15- I've got my mind set on the Army now. - Can we stop?

0:34:16 > 0:34:18It's that Army rubbish again.

0:34:18 > 0:34:22As long as he's doing something good, something honest

0:34:22 > 0:34:26and is working, I'll support him whatever he wants to do.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28I wouldn't want him

0:34:28 > 0:34:32going in the Army purely cos active service all the time and he's

0:34:32 > 0:34:36ever so young and I'm a parent, so I think any parent would be concerned.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38Then the lunch with Jack.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41They do treat me like I'm 16 still, sort of thing.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43- Yeah.- like rules and stuff like that.

0:34:43 > 0:34:46It's as if they're doing that for the fact that they don't trust me.

0:34:46 > 0:34:50He says we don't trust him but then, you know, prime example,

0:34:50 > 0:34:54don't smoke in the car. It's trust.

0:34:54 > 0:34:56And straight away, he's betrayed that trust.

0:34:56 > 0:35:00And finally, the night out in Eastbourne.

0:35:00 > 0:35:01Yeah!

0:35:01 > 0:35:04- Oh,- BLEEP- . I dropped my fag again.

0:35:04 > 0:35:06That's quite amusing.

0:35:06 > 0:35:08What a divvy!

0:35:08 > 0:35:10I'm not driving home whatsoever.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13I promised my dad 12 hours bottle to throttle.

0:35:13 > 0:35:16As long as I keep to my dad's golden rules I can't annoy him.

0:35:16 > 0:35:20My classic line to him is if you've ever had any alcohol at all,

0:35:20 > 0:35:2412 hours bottle to throttle. He has remembered it.

0:35:24 > 0:35:29So everything that I heard there makes me proud.

0:35:29 > 0:35:33It looks as though Dean is slowly winning his dad's approval.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36But it's Judith, not Denzil, who will decide

0:35:36 > 0:35:39whether Dean deserves a car of his own or advanced driving lessons.

0:35:39 > 0:35:43He's showing to me that he's a nervous driver.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46He's not sure, he's not planning, he's not looking ahead.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50At the moment, he's heading for an accident, I think,

0:35:50 > 0:35:52because he's just not concentrating.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55He's going to have some serious chats with me.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58However, he has a very good attitude that the

0:35:58 > 0:36:02people in his car are his responsibility.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05Dean's responsible attitude to driving is good,

0:36:05 > 0:36:09but his nervousness is letting him down massively.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12He has one more road trip to prove himself.

0:36:18 > 0:36:21Lauri's week is almost up

0:36:21 > 0:36:25and she only has two days before she has to hand back her mum's car keys.

0:36:25 > 0:36:28Today, she's heading back to her university

0:36:28 > 0:36:31town of Bournemouth for another big night out.

0:36:31 > 0:36:33How does her wallet handle it?

0:36:33 > 0:36:36I love it down in Bournemouth, I've got all my friends down there,

0:36:36 > 0:36:39my own house down there now, it's really nice.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41Bournemouth is 105 miles from Kingston.

0:36:41 > 0:36:43They'll be travelling round the M25

0:36:43 > 0:36:48and then down the M3 before taking the M27 through the New Forest.

0:36:48 > 0:36:53She'll be accompanied by sister Iona and mate Natalie.

0:36:54 > 0:36:57Lauri's had a little sunbed.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00I've had a little spray tan, I'm not going to lie. But, hello!

0:37:00 > 0:37:02A little bit of an accident!

0:37:02 > 0:37:06This is the very stretch of motorway where Lauri had one

0:37:06 > 0:37:09of her two crashes. How will her nerves cope?

0:37:09 > 0:37:13- Speed limit? - The national average, 70.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16And that is what I'm sitting at.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19Remarkably well, as it turns out.

0:37:19 > 0:37:22The girls arrive at Lauri's student digs in good time to get

0:37:22 > 0:37:25ready for another night out.

0:37:25 > 0:37:29- Everyone's single.- Ready to pringle!

0:37:29 > 0:37:31I'm away from home now, ain't I?

0:37:31 > 0:37:34So...no-one's got to worry about waking their mum

0:37:34 > 0:37:37and dad up coming in or anything like that.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39We've got our own house, which is quite nice.

0:37:39 > 0:37:41Let's go.

0:37:46 > 0:37:48Once in the club, true to form,

0:37:48 > 0:37:51Lauri is the first to get the shots in.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56It isn't long before the girls have boys

0:37:56 > 0:37:58hovering like bees around honey.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01- The boys are fit! - Yeah, the boys are fit tonight.

0:38:01 > 0:38:05It's the whole uni as well. They're all around our age.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07The guys, they're fit.

0:38:14 > 0:38:18And little sister Iona looks like she's pulled.

0:38:18 > 0:38:23Until big sister gives the international sign for no chance.

0:38:30 > 0:38:35Finally, all of the girls leave the club empty-handed.

0:38:38 > 0:38:40Back at the house, with Lauri passed out,

0:38:40 > 0:38:43Iona and Nat make an interesting discovery.

0:38:43 > 0:38:46I got with him a year... No, like, last year.

0:38:46 > 0:38:50And then Lauri got with him like three...two months ago.

0:38:50 > 0:38:54- And you got with him just now. - How awkward.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57And on that bombshell, the night ends.

0:38:59 > 0:39:03The next morning in Bournemouth, Iona is a little bitter that

0:39:03 > 0:39:06big sis cramped her style last night.

0:39:06 > 0:39:09- It is quite frustrating. - She's trying to crack on!

0:39:09 > 0:39:13Working on my social skills with a male of the opposite sex

0:39:13 > 0:39:15and Lauri bites my head off.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17It's a big sister thing, I think.

0:39:17 > 0:39:22- I don't know, I'm just really protective of her.- Ah, that's sweet.

0:39:23 > 0:39:26By mid-afternoon, Lauri makes the journey home to Kingston,

0:39:26 > 0:39:29but while it may be safe to drive,

0:39:29 > 0:39:32the conversation gets into dangerous territory.

0:39:32 > 0:39:34Who do you think we've all got with?

0:39:34 > 0:39:37- I don't want to have this conversation.- I do. I do.

0:39:37 > 0:39:41We all got with Billy. We've all got with Billy!

0:39:41 > 0:39:45Ah, there's nothing like keeping it in the family.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47At the start of the week,

0:39:47 > 0:39:51being on a dual carriageway would have terrified Lauri, but now...

0:39:51 > 0:39:53# Doo-doo doo-doo... #

0:39:53 > 0:39:55# Ba-da ba-da

0:39:55 > 0:39:59# Scaramouche, Scaramouche will you do the fandango?

0:40:01 > 0:40:04# Very, very frightening...

0:40:04 > 0:40:06# Galileo, Figaro

0:40:06 > 0:40:08# Galileo, Galileo

0:40:08 > 0:40:10# Oh, oh, oh... #

0:40:13 > 0:40:16She's so relaxed that she even takes a coffee break,

0:40:16 > 0:40:20which, whilst not illegal, could result in a careless driving charge.

0:40:20 > 0:40:23I've been trying so hard to cover the fact that we don't

0:40:23 > 0:40:26like each other, and trying to be nice.

0:40:26 > 0:40:27No. I love you.

0:40:27 > 0:40:29No, I do. I love you.

0:40:30 > 0:40:33And she gets the girls back home safe and sound.

0:40:37 > 0:40:41The next day brings Lauri's week behind the wheel to its conclusion,

0:40:41 > 0:40:45and Judith is driving to Lauri's parents' house near Kingston.

0:40:45 > 0:40:52The underlying problem for me is her inability to look ahead

0:40:52 > 0:40:55and plan on the approach to hazards,

0:40:55 > 0:40:57but each time she gets behind the wheel,

0:40:57 > 0:40:59she becomes a little more relaxed,

0:40:59 > 0:41:02a little bit more comfortable, a bit more confident.

0:41:03 > 0:41:06- Judith Roberts.- Pleased to meet you.

0:41:06 > 0:41:10Together they will watch Lauri's final journey and decide

0:41:10 > 0:41:13whether she gets the car or advanced driving lessons.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16Shall we have a look at her third drive?

0:41:16 > 0:41:18Hello!

0:41:18 > 0:41:22She's hands off the wheel, showing off her new nails.

0:41:22 > 0:41:26Perhaps she's starting to become a little bit too relaxed.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31My money!

0:41:34 > 0:41:37We all got with Billy. We've all got with Billy!

0:41:37 > 0:41:41They're conversations I'd rather not hear, as a dad.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44My main concern is her vision.

0:41:44 > 0:41:47I think she's got a bit of work to do there.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49- We'll have a chat when she gets here.- Yeah.

0:41:53 > 0:41:59Lauri's home just to drop off her mum's car keys - or so she thinks.

0:42:00 > 0:42:03She has no idea what lies in wait for her.

0:42:07 > 0:42:08Hi, Lauri.

0:42:08 > 0:42:13We have watched and seen everything you've done over the past week.

0:42:13 > 0:42:16Driving, going out.

0:42:16 > 0:42:19We've seen the lot.

0:42:19 > 0:42:21- No.- Yes!

0:42:21 > 0:42:22This is Judith.

0:42:22 > 0:42:24Are you all right? Nice to meet you.

0:42:24 > 0:42:27She's an ex-traffic police officer,

0:42:27 > 0:42:31who's also been watching with us.

0:42:31 > 0:42:35The whole process, this whole week that you've been

0:42:35 > 0:42:39travelling around in the car, it's been all about the driving.

0:42:39 > 0:42:41There is a little bit of a twist.

0:42:41 > 0:42:47There is a reward. What's on offer is advanced driving course.

0:42:47 > 0:42:48Mm-hmm.

0:42:48 > 0:42:52If I think you're safe enough then we would finance a second-hand car

0:42:52 > 0:42:55for you and it's down to me to decide

0:42:55 > 0:42:59whether you would be safe enough to be out there on your own.

0:43:00 > 0:43:04Now it's time for Lauri to see herself in the driving seat.

0:43:06 > 0:43:07You went in a bus lane.

0:43:07 > 0:43:10I think I saw two other people that went in it

0:43:10 > 0:43:13but I don't think I realise I'm in it.

0:43:13 > 0:43:15These people here are clearly on the crossing,

0:43:15 > 0:43:19they're halfway across the crossing but you just didn't see them.

0:43:19 > 0:43:20No. I was oblivious.

0:43:22 > 0:43:24Oh, sweet Jesus!

0:43:24 > 0:43:27This is like... I do 84 turns!

0:43:27 > 0:43:29INDISTINCT ARGUING

0:43:29 > 0:43:32I said go up and right!

0:43:32 > 0:43:35You're shouting and looking at your sister.

0:43:35 > 0:43:37As far as being in control of a lethal weapon,

0:43:37 > 0:43:40you weren't concentrating on the road ahead.

0:43:40 > 0:43:41Yeah.

0:43:41 > 0:43:44The viewing is over, and it's a chance for Lauri to plead her case.

0:43:44 > 0:43:45That's all right.

0:43:45 > 0:43:48No, obviously the first bit when we drove to Harrow,

0:43:48 > 0:43:50but that was the first time I'd been in a car for two years.

0:43:50 > 0:43:53I thought I really got better as the week went on, but at the beginning

0:43:53 > 0:43:58of the week, I was actually really quite nervous getting in the car.

0:43:58 > 0:44:00It's time for the moment of truth.

0:44:00 > 0:44:05Throughout your drive, I've seen a pattern of not looking ahead,

0:44:05 > 0:44:09not noticing the potential dangers.

0:44:09 > 0:44:10Mm-hmm.

0:44:10 > 0:44:12After careful consideration

0:44:12 > 0:44:15and weighing up how you started your journeys

0:44:15 > 0:44:20and how you've got to today, it has been a really difficult decision

0:44:20 > 0:44:23for me cos I've got to look at safety,

0:44:23 > 0:44:25but I think in this instance,

0:44:25 > 0:44:28I think you'd be OK with your own car.

0:44:28 > 0:44:31You're joking. Don't!

0:44:32 > 0:44:35Thank you. I'm so excited, thank you.

0:44:35 > 0:44:37Do you understand?

0:44:37 > 0:44:38- I think I'm going to cry.- Why?

0:44:38 > 0:44:42If you've got your own car and you go out on your own,

0:44:42 > 0:44:46and you start telling yourself what's ahead, road's going round

0:44:46 > 0:44:49to the right, traffic lights coming up, zebra crossing's coming.

0:44:49 > 0:44:52What's really important is that you learn from this.

0:44:52 > 0:44:56You will be a really good driver but you've still got a way to go.

0:44:56 > 0:45:00Lauri's shown over the week that after being initially rusty,

0:45:00 > 0:45:02her driving has improved.

0:45:02 > 0:45:05She's now ready to get behind the wheel of her own car.

0:45:08 > 0:45:12I'm ecstatic, literally. It feels unreal, like.

0:45:12 > 0:45:14It feels, like, I'm so excited.

0:45:14 > 0:45:15I'm really pleased for Lauri.

0:45:15 > 0:45:20I think she knows there was no way she was ever going to get

0:45:20 > 0:45:21a car from us again.

0:45:21 > 0:45:23Not until she's about 35!

0:45:23 > 0:45:26Driving this week, I've really got my confidence back.

0:45:26 > 0:45:28At the beginning, I was really nervous in the car

0:45:28 > 0:45:30but now I feel I can just get in and go.

0:45:38 > 0:45:42Lauri's week may be over but Dean still has a couple of days left

0:45:42 > 0:45:46before he has to hand back the keys to his mum's car.

0:45:46 > 0:45:48Tonight he's got a reunion planned,

0:45:48 > 0:45:52to visit his oldest friend Marcus in south London.

0:45:52 > 0:45:55I see him more like a brother than a best friend or anything

0:45:55 > 0:45:58because that's just what we're like together.

0:45:58 > 0:46:02And he's taking mates Harry, Jack and Tyler along for the ride.

0:46:02 > 0:46:04Love you lots like jelly tots.

0:46:04 > 0:46:06- See you, Mum!- Love you lot too!

0:46:06 > 0:46:08Stop chatting my mum up!

0:46:08 > 0:46:10LAUGHTER

0:46:10 > 0:46:13Eastbourne to south London is 64 miles

0:46:13 > 0:46:16and Dean will mainly be driving on A-roads,

0:46:16 > 0:46:18with a brief stint on the M25 -

0:46:18 > 0:46:21Dean's first ever time on a motorway.

0:46:24 > 0:46:26To add to the pressure, the weather's terrible

0:46:26 > 0:46:30and Dean's got a car full of boisterous lads.

0:46:30 > 0:46:33Distracted, he doesn't notice the car joining the motorway.

0:46:36 > 0:46:38That's where you use your horn, mate.

0:46:38 > 0:46:40That was close.

0:46:40 > 0:46:43Fortunately they all arrive in London safely.

0:46:43 > 0:46:46The lads check into a hotel so they can meet up with Marcus

0:46:46 > 0:46:48and get on the beers.

0:46:48 > 0:46:49Hello, mate!

0:46:49 > 0:46:51Hello, mate. How are you doing?

0:46:51 > 0:46:52- I'm good, man. You?- I'm sweet.

0:46:52 > 0:46:54It's always good to see Marcus.

0:46:54 > 0:46:57You too. It's always good.

0:46:57 > 0:46:59Friends reunited.

0:46:59 > 0:47:02Dean is larging it with the mates that have stuck by him

0:47:02 > 0:47:03through thick and thin.

0:47:03 > 0:47:07# Because we are your friends

0:47:07 > 0:47:10# You'll never be alone again. #

0:47:12 > 0:47:15Basically, my friends mean the world to me.

0:47:15 > 0:47:18At the end of the day, they're not just my lads,

0:47:18 > 0:47:20they're my brothers as well.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23I thought it was two in the morning, it's now four in the morning.

0:47:23 > 0:47:27I'm not even pissed. I'd say I'm...tipsy.

0:47:27 > 0:47:29All I've got to remember is 12 hours.

0:47:29 > 0:47:33As soon as I finish a drink I have to remember the time, 12 hours.

0:47:41 > 0:47:45The morning after and it's time to check out of the hotel,

0:47:45 > 0:47:48but Dean is going nowhere fast.

0:47:50 > 0:47:52Just open the door, Dean.

0:47:56 > 0:47:59With his dad's rule about leaving 12 hours between bottle to throttle

0:47:59 > 0:48:01ringing in his ears,

0:48:01 > 0:48:05Dean decides to wait out his time in the underground car park.

0:48:05 > 0:48:08We could have made a bit more out of the day,

0:48:08 > 0:48:10done a bit more better things with our time

0:48:10 > 0:48:13but we're too tired and skint so we've just been chilling

0:48:13 > 0:48:18in the car, literally for a good hour and a bit.

0:48:18 > 0:48:22Just sitting here! We could've been home by now.

0:48:23 > 0:48:25But when the 12 hours are over

0:48:25 > 0:48:29and the boys are finally ready to go home, there's a problem.

0:48:29 > 0:48:31Well, the battery's dead. So...

0:48:31 > 0:48:34Cos we were listening to the radio all day.

0:48:34 > 0:48:36I don't know what we're going to do.

0:48:36 > 0:48:39Surely if one of us starts pushing the car, doesn't that start it?

0:48:40 > 0:48:41Go, go, go.

0:48:42 > 0:48:45- What are you doing? Stop! - BLEEP- hell, man.

0:48:46 > 0:48:48I will stop it, I will stop it.

0:48:51 > 0:48:53# P-push it real good. #

0:48:53 > 0:48:58We are waiting for Green Flag to come and start the car again.

0:48:58 > 0:49:00It's completely gone.

0:49:00 > 0:49:01My lucky pants aren't working today.

0:49:01 > 0:49:04No, I don't think they are, mate.

0:49:04 > 0:49:08After another hour of waiting, the mechanic comes to their rescue.

0:49:08 > 0:49:10How do we pop the hood again?

0:49:11 > 0:49:15Dean's dad wanted him to leave at least 12 hours from bottle to throttle,

0:49:15 > 0:49:18but it's now been a good 16 hours.

0:49:18 > 0:49:19Yay!

0:49:23 > 0:49:26- On the road again!- On the road again!

0:49:28 > 0:49:31Finally, Dean gets everyone home safely.

0:49:38 > 0:49:42Two days later and Dean's week behind the wheel has come to an end.

0:49:42 > 0:49:45Judith is on her way for the final viewing with parents

0:49:45 > 0:49:47Denzil and Lynn.

0:49:47 > 0:49:51Dean's driving is causing me a lot of concern.

0:49:51 > 0:49:55It's a very, very difficult decision for me to make, whether I reward

0:49:55 > 0:49:59this very inexperienced, young driver with his own vehicle or whether

0:49:59 > 0:50:03I think he would benefit actually from some advanced driving lessons.

0:50:06 > 0:50:08- Hello.- Denzil?- I am, yes.

0:50:08 > 0:50:10- Judith Roberts. - Pleased to meet you.- Hi.

0:50:10 > 0:50:14They all sit down to watch Dean's third and final journey.

0:50:14 > 0:50:17We've got a common smoking theme.

0:50:17 > 0:50:18We said no smoking in the car.

0:50:18 > 0:50:20Him or his mates.

0:50:20 > 0:50:23For two reasons. One, it's not his car and two,

0:50:23 > 0:50:26whichever way you look at it, it's a distraction.

0:50:26 > 0:50:30I'm not even pissed. I'd say I'm tipsy.

0:50:30 > 0:50:32LAUGHTER

0:50:34 > 0:50:37Oh, dear. No battery.

0:50:39 > 0:50:40My poor little car.

0:50:40 > 0:50:43'I will stop it. I will stop it.'

0:50:43 > 0:50:45It's a very difficult decision for me to make

0:50:45 > 0:50:48because he's done some really good things and he's done

0:50:48 > 0:50:52some not so good things so we'll wait till he gets here.

0:50:52 > 0:50:54Right, OK.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01Dean thinks he's returning the keys to his mum's car.

0:51:01 > 0:51:04He has no idea what he's about to be confronted with.

0:51:08 > 0:51:12- Hello.- Hello.- You all right?- Yeah.

0:51:12 > 0:51:14This is a bit strange.

0:51:14 > 0:51:16Yeah. We've been watching everything.

0:51:16 > 0:51:19I'm sorry, I don't know what to say. I don't know what's going on.

0:51:19 > 0:51:22We've been seeing what you've been getting up to the last week.

0:51:22 > 0:51:23Yeah?

0:51:25 > 0:51:28Well, nothing illegal so don't worry!

0:51:28 > 0:51:30- Dean, this is Judith.- Hello.

0:51:30 > 0:51:31Nice to meet you, Judith.

0:51:31 > 0:51:33And Judith is an ex-police officer.

0:51:33 > 0:51:35Great(!)

0:51:35 > 0:51:39I've been asked to come in to have a look at your driving.

0:51:39 > 0:51:42As a reward for your doing what you've been doing,

0:51:42 > 0:51:47we'll either offer you some money towards your own car or,

0:51:47 > 0:51:49if I don't think you're quite ready,

0:51:49 > 0:51:52a course of advanced driving lessons.

0:51:52 > 0:51:53- Oh,- BLEEP- .

0:51:53 > 0:51:57Time for Dean to watch his week behind the wheel.

0:51:58 > 0:51:59Oh, no!

0:52:01 > 0:52:03It was stressful, it was so stressful.

0:52:03 > 0:52:05Are we supposed to come down here?

0:52:05 > 0:52:08- You're- BLEEP- kidding me, it's buses only, Sophie.

0:52:09 > 0:52:13I had no idea I'd even gone over the limit by ten miles an hour.

0:52:13 > 0:52:15Let alone 12.3.

0:52:17 > 0:52:18I did think, shall I avoid that,

0:52:18 > 0:52:21but I thought I'd probably have to go out into the road more.

0:52:21 > 0:52:24You needed to have slowed down.

0:52:24 > 0:52:25Tyson pushing the car!

0:52:25 > 0:52:27I'm not sure what you're doing there.

0:52:27 > 0:52:30Anything we could. We wanted to go home!

0:52:30 > 0:52:34Having seen the evidence, it's time to hear Dean's defence.

0:52:34 > 0:52:38The speed aspect is my main concern.

0:52:38 > 0:52:43How can you convince me that you will change?

0:52:43 > 0:52:45Concentration.

0:52:45 > 0:52:48Seeing this actually on the screen, actually seeing it,

0:52:48 > 0:52:53has given me a better view of it. Like, I know now what my errors are.

0:52:53 > 0:52:56I know what I've got to do now, what I've got to improve on.

0:52:56 > 0:52:59I just hope you realise that at all times throughout all of it,

0:52:59 > 0:53:01everyone's safety was my main concern.

0:53:01 > 0:53:03That's exactly what we said. That's exactly what we said.

0:53:03 > 0:53:05And as long as you've acknowledged that, to me,

0:53:05 > 0:53:09get the lessons or the car or whatever, that's all that matters.

0:53:09 > 0:53:11It's decision time.

0:53:11 > 0:53:15Having looked at your whole drive, not just the bits

0:53:15 > 0:53:17but all three drives, you've done some good things

0:53:17 > 0:53:19and you've done some bad things.

0:53:19 > 0:53:22So whilst it's been a really difficult decision,

0:53:22 > 0:53:28I do think that at this moment that you would benefit from your own car.

0:53:28 > 0:53:29Ah, sweet!

0:53:29 > 0:53:32That's so good!

0:53:32 > 0:53:35You made it out like I was going to be really bad!

0:53:35 > 0:53:37I've been really tense for ages!

0:53:37 > 0:53:39No, I'm happy with that.

0:53:39 > 0:53:41I'm really happy. Not on camera!

0:53:41 > 0:53:42I love you, darling.

0:53:42 > 0:53:45It's nice to see that you listened to what I said,

0:53:45 > 0:53:48you acknowledged what I said, you weren't afraid to acknowledge it in

0:53:48 > 0:53:50front of other people and I've got a lot of respect for you for that.

0:53:50 > 0:53:53- I'm proud of you. - I'm quite happy with that actually.

0:53:53 > 0:53:55I'm really happy with that.

0:53:55 > 0:53:57Despite not always paying attention

0:53:57 > 0:54:01and speeding on his first journey, Dean's overall attitude

0:54:01 > 0:54:04and his willingness to learn from his mistakes means Judith believes

0:54:04 > 0:54:07he's ready for his own car.

0:54:07 > 0:54:11I'm over the moon. I'm really pleased that they saw how I've been driving

0:54:11 > 0:54:14cos now they'll actually acknowledge that I am a grown-up.

0:54:14 > 0:54:15Satisfaction.

0:54:15 > 0:54:17Winning the car and my dad being proud of me -

0:54:17 > 0:54:20I'm just as happy with both. Trust me.

0:54:20 > 0:54:24That's how much it means to me to hear him say that. It means a lot.

0:54:30 > 0:54:33In Kingston, it's been three weeks since Lauri got the thumbs-up

0:54:33 > 0:54:36and she's here to pick up her car.

0:54:36 > 0:54:37You all right?

0:54:37 > 0:54:40'Having a car of my own, it's like I've got my freedom back.

0:54:40 > 0:54:41'I can do what I want, go where I want.'

0:54:41 > 0:54:42Thank you so much.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45I am literally buzzing to get in my car and drive it.

0:54:45 > 0:54:48I can't wait to go and get Sara and Natalie.

0:54:50 > 0:54:53It feels like it's Christmas and my birthday in one. I love it.

0:54:53 > 0:54:55It's my own. It's my own little car.

0:54:57 > 0:54:59Lauri's got a car to be proud of.

0:54:59 > 0:55:02Let's hope she takes better care of this one.

0:55:02 > 0:55:05I gave Lauri the car because having watched her across the whole week,

0:55:05 > 0:55:08she's actually a good little driver.

0:55:08 > 0:55:11Yes, she made a mistake by failing to notice somebody on the crossing

0:55:11 > 0:55:14but after that, she settled down.

0:55:14 > 0:55:17She's a very safe, consistent driver.

0:55:21 > 0:55:25A few weeks later and it's also time for Dean to pick up his new car.

0:55:25 > 0:55:28Proud dad Denzil has come along to oversee proceedings.

0:55:28 > 0:55:30There you go, Dean.

0:55:30 > 0:55:33It's just a wicked feeling getting the car.

0:55:33 > 0:55:37Absolutely amazing. Finally got my own car. Happy with it though.

0:55:37 > 0:55:39Having a new car means a lot to me.

0:55:39 > 0:55:41It means I can go out with my friends a lot more,

0:55:41 > 0:55:44I can do things that we don't normally get to do.

0:55:44 > 0:55:49Dean drives off having finally got his much-sought-after independence.

0:55:49 > 0:55:51Everybody makes mistakes.

0:55:51 > 0:55:54Dean made a huge mistake when he exceeded the speed limit.

0:55:54 > 0:55:56We've talked about it. He's mortified.

0:55:56 > 0:55:59It was a momentary lapse in his concentration

0:55:59 > 0:56:02but across the whole week, that's the only thing that I could see

0:56:02 > 0:56:04he did wrong and I genuinely believe

0:56:04 > 0:56:08that he will make a very good, very safe driver with his own car.

0:56:13 > 0:56:17Next time on Barely Legal Drivers - we meet two very different teens.

0:56:17 > 0:56:18SHOUTING

0:56:18 > 0:56:20Scaring the hell out of me!

0:56:20 > 0:56:22Oh, my God!

0:56:22 > 0:56:27# And when we drink with George She downs it all. #

0:56:27 > 0:56:29- Christ!- Go, go, go.

0:56:29 > 0:56:31Oh, my God.

0:56:31 > 0:56:32I'm not leaving him though.

0:56:32 > 0:56:35I think he's had a bit too much.

0:56:35 > 0:56:37It's horrible.

0:56:37 > 0:56:38CRASHING

0:56:38 > 0:56:40I just scratched the wall.

0:56:40 > 0:56:41Scratched the wall?!
