0:00:02 > 0:00:06Britain's young drivers are some of the most dangerous in Europe.

0:00:27 > 0:00:31In this series, we're following inexperienced teens

0:00:31 > 0:00:33to see what they're like behind the wheel.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Bloody hell!

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Fasten your seatbelts, because

0:00:39 > 0:00:43each week, two novices are let loose on the road in their family car.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47They believe they're filming a slice of modern teenage life,

0:00:47 > 0:00:51but in fact it's all about their driving.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Oh, my God.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54Oh!

0:00:54 > 0:00:56There's red lights, that's why.

0:00:56 > 0:01:01What they don't know is that their parents will watch every manoeuvre.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04The cars are fitted with cameras

0:01:04 > 0:01:09and a hidden telemetry recorder that secretly tracks their every move.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13She was posing!

0:01:13 > 0:01:15- Oh, no.- What's this all about?!

0:01:15 > 0:01:20Each teen will go on three road trips, geared towards testing every aspect of their driving.

0:01:20 > 0:01:21Get out the car now.

0:01:21 > 0:01:25At the end, aided and abetted by a former traffic cop,

0:01:25 > 0:01:28the parents will have a decision to make.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32I weren't happy. Really hard to keep my mouth shut.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34If they don't like the way the teens operate behind the wheel,

0:01:34 > 0:01:38both of them could end up with advanced driving lessons.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41But if they think they're good enough,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45we'll give them the cash to buy their kid a car

0:01:45 > 0:01:47they can call their very own.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Tonight we meet two very different teenagers.

0:01:53 > 0:01:58Matthew, a young drama student with a quiff to rival Jedward.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02And Georgina, a girl who likes to party big-style.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06# When we drink with George She downs it all... #

0:02:06 > 0:02:08- Will it be the reward...- Aaaah!

0:02:08 > 0:02:11..or retribution for either of these teens

0:02:11 > 0:02:14when their parents see them behind the wheel?

0:02:14 > 0:02:15Matthew!

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Welcome to Barely Legal Drivers.

0:02:23 > 0:02:28This is 18-year-old Matthew Roberts, Welsh, gay and proud.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31He lives at home with his mum Kathleen in Pontardawe,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33a small town in the Welsh valleys.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38The teenager recently escaped from Ponty

0:02:38 > 0:02:42to study performing arts in Neath, where he soon made friends.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44He's a laugh. He's straight to the point.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47If he doesn't like you, he'll tell you.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50He doesn't care what people think. He's got his own style,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53his own way of doing things, and that's it. That's Matthew.

0:02:53 > 0:02:58But growing up in a relatively isolated community wasn't easy.

0:02:58 > 0:03:04I got bullied a lot in school. I used to be called Gay Boy.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08I thought, "Every word you're saying to me will make me stronger inside."

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Despite passing his test four months ago, he can't afford a car,

0:03:12 > 0:03:14so uses public transport.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18Any bus I'll go on, there'll be kids or someone on the bus

0:03:18 > 0:03:21that'll make you feel uncomfortable.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25Once kids took notice of me and went, "Are you a gay boy?"

0:03:25 > 0:03:29They offered a fight with me at the back.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34Then, six months ago, Matthew met Liam on Facebook,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37and not long after, they went on a blind date.

0:03:37 > 0:03:42Liam's a lovely kid. Really fitted in well. They're inseparable now.

0:03:42 > 0:03:48He's unique, he's funny, and his jokes just tickle me. He's great.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51But recently when leaving a local restaurant,

0:03:51 > 0:03:54the two of them were victims of an attack.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58As we walked in we got a lot of abuse about our sexuality.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00So we walked out. As we passed them,

0:04:00 > 0:04:04this boy's hand got behind his back and swung.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09I thought they'd got a brick so I flung myself towards Liam.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13The police were called. You can't let people away with that.

0:04:13 > 0:04:18It caused me to have a panic attack, the biggest one I've ever had.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23I was trying to cool him down. Luckily, as we got home he was OK.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25As his parents are separated,

0:04:25 > 0:04:30Matthew's Aunt Mary will join mum Kathleen to secretly watch his every move.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33I'm excited about the week ahead, but also worried.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35I don't know what I'm going to see!

0:04:35 > 0:04:38Will he be showing off or...?

0:04:38 > 0:04:41If he knows what's good for him, and he wants to come home,

0:04:41 > 0:04:43he'll take his time and not show off.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48If they like what they see, Matthew could be given his own car

0:04:48 > 0:04:51and a means of getting around safely.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00In the tiny town of March in Cambridgeshire

0:05:00 > 0:05:04is 18-year-old Georgina Jones and she loves to party.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06When not at college in Leeds,

0:05:06 > 0:05:10she lives at home with mum Mandy and dad Rob.

0:05:13 > 0:05:18Georgina likes to shop, drink and go on holiday with seven guys,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20minus the boyfriend!

0:05:20 > 0:05:22# Foxy lady! #

0:05:22 > 0:05:25She was a good laugh in Magaluf. She did overdo it some nights.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29I wouldn't say I was unpopular. I'm just quite close to the boys.

0:05:29 > 0:05:34If any boys couldn't handle their drink, "Mum" Georgina was on hand.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37She helped to look after people as well.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41If they got a bit too drunk, she'd look after them.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44But there's more to Georgina than just partying.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47We're surprised how clever she is.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49When she was little, she struggled,

0:05:49 > 0:05:53but then she just blossomed in her secondary school.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57Georgina got into Leeds University to read psychology

0:05:57 > 0:06:00and already knows what she wants to do with her life.

0:06:00 > 0:06:05Hopefully, after uni I can become an eating disorder counsellor.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07I'd quite like to do that.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09After passing her test last year,

0:06:09 > 0:06:14sister Bethan lent Georgina her car, but soon came to regret it.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18I did have a little incident a week after I passed my test.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22I was just backing out of the car park...

0:06:22 > 0:06:27All I heard was this massive bang. She was still reversing back

0:06:27 > 0:06:30while the car was screeching against the other car.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33It was the most stupid thing you could ever do.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36I don't get how she didn't hear it!

0:06:36 > 0:06:38I think I've got better.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Georgina hasn't been behind the wheel since,

0:06:41 > 0:06:46but over the next week she'll get a second chance in her sister's car

0:06:46 > 0:06:49but it's her parents who'll be covertly watching her.

0:06:49 > 0:06:50Nervous about what you'll see?

0:06:50 > 0:06:53We just don't know what she's like in the car

0:06:53 > 0:06:55with her friends or generally.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58But she did say she had to run over the gears in her mind.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Cos she'd forgotten how they go.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Georgina and Matthew don't have a clue that

0:07:04 > 0:07:07if they can show they can drive safely for a week,

0:07:07 > 0:07:11they could both be driving away in their own motor.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24In Cambridgeshire, it's dinner time at Georgina's house.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27I'm not putting any dressing on.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31Sister Bethan, partner Dean and baby Josh are also tucking in.

0:07:31 > 0:07:36Georgina believes she's getting her sister's car to help get around

0:07:36 > 0:07:40and she's looking forward to the week ahead.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42I'm going to laser tag.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46- Your competitive side will come out. - I'm not competitive!

0:07:46 > 0:07:51- Are you going to take the car? - Where will you park?- I don't know.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55Preferably not too close to other cars after the crash!

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Once you get on there, it's just being careful,

0:08:01 > 0:08:05watching in your wing mirrors. People drive fast behind you.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09- Do you know the speed limit?- Yes. On the dual carriageway?- Yeah.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13- 70.- Good shout.- Just be careful.

0:08:17 > 0:08:22Over in Ponty, Matthew's mum is also giving up her car for the week.

0:08:22 > 0:08:27I'll give you this. You can use my car, right?

0:08:27 > 0:08:29I'm warning you now -

0:08:29 > 0:08:34take your time, use your head. I'm serious.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37- OK.- You bang it, I'll batter you.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40- Oh...- Give, give.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43I've been waiting 18 years for that!

0:08:43 > 0:08:46Matthew may have the keys to freedom,

0:08:46 > 0:08:50but he has no idea about his mum's hidden agenda.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58The following morning, and it's been snowing.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Matthew's taking the opportunity to get as far away as possible.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06He and boyfriend Liam are escaping to the coastal town of Tenby.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08I'm feeling very nervous.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12He's never been out in the car on his own for a length of time.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14I haven't slept all night!

0:09:14 > 0:09:18- Right, take your time.- I will. - Phone when you get there.

0:09:18 > 0:09:23Finally, Matthew gets in the driving seat and he's feeling confident.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- Good God! I'm- BLEEP- my pants!

0:09:26 > 0:09:30After picking up Liam two miles away, it'll be a 57-mile journey

0:09:30 > 0:09:33and should take an hour and 15 minutes -

0:09:33 > 0:09:37a little longer than Matthew takes to do his hair.

0:09:37 > 0:09:38So on top of the icy conditions,

0:09:38 > 0:09:42not only is it the first time ever driving without an instructor,

0:09:42 > 0:09:46it's also his first time on a motorway.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50With boyfriend Liam on board, Matthew's nerves should calm down,

0:09:50 > 0:09:54as long as he can get his phone's GPS working.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58- I don't know where I'm going! - Navigator...- Is it up?- Yeah.- Right.

0:09:58 > 0:10:03But soon things turn into a bit of a domestic.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07- You're talking shite to me. - Me?! I'm trying to help you!

0:10:07 > 0:10:10- Oh, for- BLEEP- sake! - Don't you use language!

0:10:11 > 0:10:14You're my navigator. You're not very good.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17- I'm telling you where to go! - Don't shout at me!

0:10:17 > 0:10:22- If you go on the other side... - No, Matt. No.

0:10:22 > 0:10:28# What you want, baby, I got it What you need, you know... #

0:10:28 > 0:10:32- After the odd moment... - Where am I going?!

0:10:32 > 0:10:37- ..and a few dodgy directions from Liam...- Back over.- My God!

0:10:37 > 0:10:42- ..they finally find the right road. - You're a bloody knob! Serial!

0:10:42 > 0:10:45- What lane?- Straight ahead. A48.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51The odd bit of drama and hysteria aside,

0:10:51 > 0:10:55Matthew drove well - all that's left is parking.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58- This is disabled.- Is this disabled? Please- BLEEP!

0:10:58 > 0:11:02- On the floor, it says disabled. - Oh, my God. Oh, my God!

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Disabled badge holders only.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06Having found a legal place to park,

0:11:06 > 0:11:11it's coffee and cake with a sea view, but priorities first.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14It's that call to Mum to let her know everyone's safe.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16She'll kill me if I don't ring her.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19She'll be on pins, worrying about you.

0:11:19 > 0:11:24She'll kill me, literally. I'll be dead. Buried in the sand.

0:11:26 > 0:11:31Yeah, I've arrived safe and I'll ring you later on. Ciao.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33There we go.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Now she won't worry so much.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38No, she'll feel better now. She'll get the message.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48The following day, mum Kathleen sneaks over to Mary's house

0:11:48 > 0:11:50to watch Matthew's first drive.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54- You talk a lot of shite to me. - I'm trying to help you, you fool!

0:11:54 > 0:11:57- Oh, for- BLEEP- sake!

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- Liam!- His mother will go nuts.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- # What you want... # - Oh, God!

0:12:02 > 0:12:04# What you need... #

0:12:06 > 0:12:09- Well done, boy.- All that effort and it's a disabled bay.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11Oh, nice one, Matt!

0:12:11 > 0:12:14- This ain't disabled.- On the floor... - Please, BLEEP, don't tell me.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Matthew!

0:12:16 > 0:12:18We've never heard him swear.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22- It's a totally different Matthew. - Not the F word.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25To drive like that in the weather, fair play. I wouldn't have done it.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29- I've got to be honest, but I'm like, "Oh!"- Really proud.

0:12:31 > 0:12:36It was his first time in a car since his test, and he drove really well,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39but there are still two more journeys to go.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51250 miles to the east,

0:12:51 > 0:12:55Georgina's getting ready to do what she does best - shop.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59And she's dragging along her boyfriend, Jamie.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03- OK, I'm going now. See you later! - Bye! Have a good day.- See you.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05She'll pick up Jamie three miles away,

0:13:05 > 0:13:09then drive south to Cambridge, a distance of 31 miles.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12It should take her just under one hour,

0:13:12 > 0:13:15as long as everything goes to plan.

0:13:17 > 0:13:22This'll be Georgina's first drive since crashing her sister's car,

0:13:22 > 0:13:25and she's never navigated around a city centre.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29- Left then...- Approaching Cambridge, Georgina's nerves start to show

0:13:29 > 0:13:32as she's in the wrong lane for her turn-off.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Oh, shit! I can't!

0:13:34 > 0:13:38It's not my fault. You told me to stay in this one!

0:13:38 > 0:13:39Don't get angry.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44There was a car there!

0:13:45 > 0:13:48After that little tiff, they get back on track,

0:13:48 > 0:13:51but there's still the city centre to go.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02I thought that was on a dual carriageway.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12With her lack of Highway Code knowledge laid bare,

0:14:12 > 0:14:18Georgina comes face to face with an oncoming bus and starts stressing.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21Are you kidding me? Where am I going?

0:14:21 > 0:14:23- I don't know.- Shall I go here?

0:14:23 > 0:14:27- I don't know. - Well...I need to go here, don't I?

0:14:27 > 0:14:31- No.- There's nowhere... I've got to go here.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34There we go.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36That was easy.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38Realising it's a loading bay,

0:14:38 > 0:14:44she wisely finds alternative parking and finally they can go and shop.

0:14:47 > 0:14:51# It's a beautiful night We're looking for something... #

0:14:51 > 0:14:54That evening, parents Rob and Mandy

0:14:54 > 0:14:58sneak round to Granny's house to watch Georgina's first drive.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00I've been on the dual carriageway.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03It's just 80 miles an hour.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06- 80? On a dual carriageway? - Is that what she said?

0:15:06 > 0:15:10- Why don't I go park there? - She doesn't seem too bad.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12- She didn't get flustered.- No.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15Where am I going? Shall I go here?

0:15:15 > 0:15:18- Oh...- I need to go here.

0:15:18 > 0:15:19Oh!

0:15:19 > 0:15:24Can she park in there? Oh, she's letting the bus go.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27- Ah, right. Oh.- She's done it.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29I thought she did quite well.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33Her main panic was in the town. It is really busy in Cambridge.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36I was really surprised she said 80mph.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39Would you think she was worthy of getting a car?

0:15:39 > 0:15:43I think she done really well. Really positive. Definitely.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47Georgina's parents might be pleased with her first drive,

0:15:47 > 0:15:50but she did suffer from nervousness and indecision.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04Coming up - Georgina gets distracted,

0:16:04 > 0:16:06right, left and centre...

0:16:06 > 0:16:08You're scaring the hell out of me!

0:16:08 > 0:16:12- ..and Matthew's mum's car takes a bit of a knock.- Oh!

0:16:17 > 0:16:19It's almost the middle of the week in Wales.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22Matthew is round at his auntie's with a bunch of friends.

0:16:22 > 0:16:26Tonight he's ditching the wheels and heading into Swansea,

0:16:26 > 0:16:30but he's got to get ready first and that could take some time.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34- Do you want your quiff turning over? - Yeah.- Like an ice cream cone?

0:16:34 > 0:16:38Then it's off upstairs to see Mary's partner Danielle,

0:16:38 > 0:16:39who is Matthew's fashion guru.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41You can't wear the denim,

0:16:41 > 0:16:46so you'll have to wear one of my black leather jackets or something.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50When he goes out, it's a big thing.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52He's very conscious of how he looks.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54'He's a good-looking boy

0:16:54 > 0:16:58'and he's confident enough to be who he feels he is.'

0:16:58 > 0:17:00His flamboyancy has come out a lot more

0:17:00 > 0:17:03this last year than ever before.

0:17:03 > 0:17:08The spiky jewellery and the funky clothes is just who he is.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12Three, two, one. You're ready. I'm ready. Let's go.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21It's karaoke night and everyone's getting in the party mood.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27There's just time for a conga and a bit of dancing

0:17:27 > 0:17:30before Matthew gets his hands on the mic.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33CHEERING

0:17:37 > 0:17:40# You done done me... #

0:17:40 > 0:17:43I've had a few drinks tonight,

0:17:43 > 0:17:47but when I've been asked to sing I try to calm it down.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50When you drink, you lose your voice.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52# You're so hot that I'm melted

0:17:52 > 0:17:55# I fell right through the cracks

0:17:55 > 0:17:58# And I'm trying to get back

0:17:58 > 0:18:04# I'm yo-o-o-ours... #

0:18:04 > 0:18:09The night ends with the crowd eating from the palm of his hand.

0:18:15 > 0:18:20In Cambridgeshire, Georgina's going out to paint Peterborough town red.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22Or should that be pink?

0:18:22 > 0:18:26First it's pre-drinks, Georgina-style.

0:18:28 > 0:18:29Go on!

0:18:31 > 0:18:33Five.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Two fingers.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42That was quite good.

0:18:42 > 0:18:47- How's it feeling?- The next lucky person to down the dirty pint

0:18:47 > 0:18:49is none other than Georgina.

0:18:49 > 0:18:54# I like to drink with Georgina Cos George is our mate

0:18:54 > 0:18:58# And when I drink with George She downs it all... #

0:18:58 > 0:18:59Oh!

0:19:01 > 0:19:06Tanked up on booze, it's time to hit the club.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16After some vodka, the odd candy-floss chaser

0:19:16 > 0:19:19and a little mixing on the dance floor,

0:19:19 > 0:19:23it isn't Georgina who's in trouble. It's mate Alex.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25Come on, then!

0:19:27 > 0:19:31Kicked out by the bouncer, no-one has noticed Alex missing,

0:19:31 > 0:19:33but "mum" Georgina tracks him down.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36Do you want some...? Do you want a drink or anything?

0:19:36 > 0:19:38No, I just want to go home.

0:19:38 > 0:19:39I'm not leaving him.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43Despite Georgina's mothering, she can't stop the inevitable.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46Nice!

0:19:46 > 0:19:47Well, bye, then.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49At the end of the night,

0:19:49 > 0:19:53it's chips and a taxi home and some very sore heads in the morning.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06It's halfway through Matthew's week in South Wales.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10He and his budding thespian friends are off for a bit of dressing up

0:20:10 > 0:20:12at a costume house in Bristol.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15I can't wait to see Chelsea, Beth...

0:20:15 > 0:20:19If there's an Elvis costume, Darcy will get in it. It'll be so funny.

0:20:19 > 0:20:23After stops to pick up Chelsea, Beth and Darcy,

0:20:23 > 0:20:26it's 85 miles, mostly on the M4.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29It should take one hour and 35 minutes,

0:20:29 > 0:20:31as long as everyone remains calm.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Aaah!

0:20:35 > 0:20:37Not only is the weather awful,

0:20:37 > 0:20:41this is also the most passengers Matthew's ever had in a car.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43- Are you sure?- Yes.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45Aaargh!

0:20:45 > 0:20:47That was a bit close!

0:20:47 > 0:20:51It's a straight road to Bristol. Nothing can go wrong now.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53- M4, London-Bristol.- Yeah.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57So Bristol must be not far from London, then.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00A very geographically-confused Matthew

0:21:00 > 0:21:04then turns onto the M5 and heads north to Birmingham.

0:21:04 > 0:21:08- Oh, my God! - It's over there! Look!

0:21:08 > 0:21:10Over there!

0:21:10 > 0:21:15There must be two routes, then. It must be that.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17Running late and still some way from the costume house,

0:21:17 > 0:21:19a stressed-out Matthew blindly follows the car

0:21:19 > 0:21:22in front, and goes through a red light.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24I'm doing it!

0:21:24 > 0:21:26SHE LAUGHS

0:21:28 > 0:21:33- Shut up!- Running a red light would be three points on the old licence.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39Oh, my God!

0:21:39 > 0:21:41After a little more screaming,

0:21:41 > 0:21:44finally they arrive at the costume house,

0:21:44 > 0:21:49having taken two hours longer than planned. It's not good news.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54We were meant to dress up in all different costumes,

0:21:54 > 0:22:01but the journey took a bit longer than it should have. It's closed.

0:22:01 > 0:22:02A little peeved,

0:22:02 > 0:22:06the group head into the city centre for a consolation bevvy.

0:22:06 > 0:22:07But once in the town,

0:22:07 > 0:22:12the car in the next lane decides to have a mobile snowball fight.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15Not a...

0:22:16 > 0:22:18You stupid prick!

0:22:18 > 0:22:21A stressed-out Matthew tries to outmanoeuvre the car.

0:22:24 > 0:22:29- BLEEP!- Close the window in case they chuck it through again.

0:22:29 > 0:22:33- Oh, my God!- I- BLEEP- shit myself then. No word of a lie.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37I am tamping. I want to get out of the car and rip his balls off.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41But they catch up and drive by on the left, launching a second attack.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44Lucky I put the window up.

0:22:44 > 0:22:48Now behind the car, Matthew lets it all out.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51- BLEEP!- Oh, God!

0:22:51 > 0:22:56- If the snowball came and hit me, I'd have been- BLEEP!

0:22:56 > 0:22:57- Come the- BLEEP- on!

0:22:57 > 0:23:03After the drive from hell, Matthew is in dire need of a drink.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06- Here we go. Lemonade for you.- Thank you.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08Sensibly, he goes soft.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12I virtually crapped myself. I'm not going to lie.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16Honest, I crapped myself. All these lanes are just too much.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19- I know.- With a snowman...

0:23:19 > 0:23:24- He's driving!- Them boys, they're lucky...- I'll have them!

0:23:24 > 0:23:27- Yeah, you'll have them. - Got their numbers down.

0:23:27 > 0:23:29They'd the cheek to come back round.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32I don't know the place, but people are throwing snowballs at me.

0:23:32 > 0:23:33I'm crapping my pants.

0:23:33 > 0:23:38You don't see me going around Ponty throwing snowballs at somebody!

0:23:38 > 0:23:40With a long trip planned,

0:23:40 > 0:23:44Matthew slips into something more comfortable for the drive home.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52- CRASH! - Oh...shit!

0:23:55 > 0:23:58I reversed. I was looking more behind than in front of me.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00I've kind of scratched the wall.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03Scratched? I wonder what Mum's going to think!

0:24:04 > 0:24:08With no more dents, Matthew drives everyone home safely.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18The next day, Kath has once again sneaked over to her sister's house

0:24:18 > 0:24:21to see what Matthew's been up to

0:24:21 > 0:24:23over the last couple of days and nights.

0:24:23 > 0:24:27- Matthew...- The language is disgusting. I'll batter him.

0:24:27 > 0:24:32- What's he doing now? - He's gone through a red light.

0:24:34 > 0:24:38- Shut up!- I'll kill him when I get my hands on him.

0:24:38 > 0:24:43- What was that?- Not funny. Somebody threw a snowball.- I know.

0:24:43 > 0:24:45- I- BLEEP- shit myself there!

0:24:45 > 0:24:46I don't blame you, boy.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49I am tamping. I swear that I want to get out the car

0:24:49 > 0:24:51and rip his balls off!

0:24:51 > 0:24:54Calm down! He's panicking even more now.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56He doesn't need this at the end of the day.

0:24:56 > 0:25:00- Lucky I put the window up, then. - BLEEP!- Oh, my God!

0:25:00 > 0:25:03- Matthew, stop it.- He's calmed down.

0:25:03 > 0:25:08- Calm down.- He's a proper drama queen when he's driving.- Of course he is.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11- I swear to God I'd have- BLEEP!

0:25:11 > 0:25:14- Matthew!- You are a- BLEEP- knob!

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Matthew!

0:25:16 > 0:25:21- Oh, Matt!- My flaming car! - Oh, Matthew!

0:25:21 > 0:25:25I was looking more behind than in front of me. I scratched the wall.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27Scratched the wall?!

0:25:27 > 0:25:32- Not too bad.- Oh, yeah(!) - It's not a brand new car. It's fine.

0:25:32 > 0:25:37- It's fine.- What difference does it make?!- It's fine.

0:25:37 > 0:25:41- It's a bit of a scratch.- Oh...!

0:25:41 > 0:25:44My mam will be OK with it.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47A tiny scratch?!

0:25:47 > 0:25:51Take this out. I haven't even seen it yet.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53Oh, it's no big deal.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57- He's all right. How many times have you done that?- Not once.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01- Do you avoid multi-storey car parks? - A little scratch?!

0:26:03 > 0:26:08I think he's more panicked here because he didn't know where he was.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10It's unfamiliar.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13He was more calm going to Tenby when he only had Liam in the car.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16I'm not saying the girls were a bad influence

0:26:16 > 0:26:18because I don't think they were.

0:26:18 > 0:26:22He was more of a demon than I thought he was.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25Fortunately, Kath and Mary won't be alone

0:26:25 > 0:26:29in deciding if Matthew deserves a car or needs more lessons.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32With 20 years' on the job, ex-traffic cop Judith Roberts

0:26:32 > 0:26:37has been casting her expert eye on all of Matthew's driving.

0:26:37 > 0:26:42Matthew's really let himself down with that drive, I'm sad to say.

0:26:42 > 0:26:46The red light issue. He should not have gone and he knows it.

0:26:46 > 0:26:48Looking at his facial expressions,

0:26:48 > 0:26:53Matthew's wind has been taken out of his sails.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57He knows he's clearly messed up big time.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Three points on his licence if a police officer had been behind him.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03I do think Matthew dealt with the directions quite well -

0:27:03 > 0:27:06that's a big plus for me.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08Within the car, he didn't let himself down,

0:27:08 > 0:27:13he didn't get drawn in, he didn't get too flustered.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15A big plus with his drinking attitude,

0:27:15 > 0:27:19I don't think people should have any alcohol when they go out.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23The fact that he had soft drinks through his night out - fabulous.

0:27:23 > 0:27:31Oh, dear. Reversing out of that bay, he was way too close.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33I could see it happening.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36I could see the angle he was coming back at

0:27:36 > 0:27:40and he's just not looking to the front. He's looking back.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43After the first journey it was really easy,

0:27:43 > 0:27:46I would happily have let him have a car,

0:27:46 > 0:27:49but now, I...

0:27:49 > 0:27:55I really don't think, having seen what I've seen, he deserves one.

0:27:55 > 0:27:59After one good and one bad drive so far,

0:27:59 > 0:28:01Matthew's chances of getting his own car

0:28:01 > 0:28:03are hanging in the balance.

0:28:14 > 0:28:15Up in the fenlands of March,

0:28:15 > 0:28:19lad-loving Georgina is heading to Leicester with a group of mates

0:28:19 > 0:28:21to play a game of laser tag.

0:28:23 > 0:28:27After picking up Joe, Beth and Matt, it's a 60-mile journey west.

0:28:27 > 0:28:30It'll be the furthest she'll have ever driven

0:28:30 > 0:28:34and she's got her arch-nemesis at the end of it - a city centre.

0:28:35 > 0:28:39Luckily for Georgina, sat next to her is one of her best mates, Joe,

0:28:39 > 0:28:41and he'd never do anything to upset her.

0:28:44 > 0:28:45I can't look, but...

0:28:45 > 0:28:46No, I can't do it.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49Remember, Georgina, on roundabouts, always give way to the left.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51Shut up, Joe!

0:28:51 > 0:28:56- What is the fastest you've ever driven?- The speed limit, Joe.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59That is the fastest I've ever gone.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02- SEAT THUMPS - Aagh! Joe, don't do that!

0:29:02 > 0:29:05Please! For God's sake!

0:29:07 > 0:29:09Seriously, I thought like the engine

0:29:09 > 0:29:12- had fallen out or something. - LAUGHTER

0:29:14 > 0:29:18After dealing with Joe's antics, it's city centre time.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21- Down this one?- That one. Yeah.

0:29:21 > 0:29:24- Don't stop.- Agh!- Don't stop.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28- What, forward?- Yeah, keep going. - You told me down that one!

0:29:28 > 0:29:31It's the same one.

0:29:31 > 0:29:35- Where do I go?- Down here. - Keep going.- BLEEP- hell!

0:29:35 > 0:29:39- You see this one?- Oh, my God, people, you're scaring the hell out of me!

0:29:39 > 0:29:41- It's not down here.- Definitely not.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44It's not down here. You're scaring the hell out of me.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47Do you want me to carry on reversing?

0:29:47 > 0:29:51Like her trip to Cambridge, she's taking a much bigger vehicle on.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54- Where am I going? Beth, tell me. - Go straight.

0:29:54 > 0:29:57Jesus...Christ!

0:29:57 > 0:30:00With a not particularly successful history

0:30:00 > 0:30:02when it comes to reverse parking,

0:30:02 > 0:30:05Georgina nervously prepares to reverse-park.

0:30:05 > 0:30:09- No, I can't do it.- Yeah, you can. - I know I can't.

0:30:09 > 0:30:13- You're talking me through this, like, terribly.- Go slowly, then.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15Keep going slowly.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19Oh, for God's sake!

0:30:21 > 0:30:23Avoiding another potential scrape,

0:30:23 > 0:30:26she decides to take the easier option.

0:30:27 > 0:30:31- I'm happy now.- Right, stop. Perfect parking.- Well done.- Thanks!

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Finally, let the games begin.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38- I'm Belle.- I'm Wario.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42And obviously, it wouldn't be a good laser battle

0:30:42 > 0:30:45without a giant pink gorilla running around.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48- Agh!- She shot me!

0:30:51 > 0:30:54Where is she?

0:30:56 > 0:31:00- I came first out of us lot.- I came last.- I was second from last.

0:31:00 > 0:31:03- I could cry. - You came last, Georgina.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06- Thanks(!)- Ninth out of nine. - Cheers. I'm not jealous, Joe.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09Before heading back, they get the beers in.

0:31:09 > 0:31:13Georgina's been running around and had a stressful drive.

0:31:13 > 0:31:14Will she have alcohol?

0:31:14 > 0:31:17Nope, she's having lemonade.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20Georgina and her friends make it back to March without any drama.

0:31:23 > 0:31:25The following evening,

0:31:25 > 0:31:29parents Rob and Mandy now have to sit through Georgina's shenanigans.

0:31:29 > 0:31:33First up, the boozy night in Peterborough.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35- Oh, my God!- Look at them!

0:31:35 > 0:31:37What a concoction!

0:31:37 > 0:31:40# I like to drink with George... #

0:31:40 > 0:31:44- What's she doing?- Look at her!

0:31:50 > 0:31:53- Look at him! - I think he's had a bit too much.

0:31:53 > 0:31:54It's horrible.

0:31:54 > 0:31:57Then the trip to the Laser Quest in Leicester.

0:31:57 > 0:32:02- Georgina, on roundabouts, always give way to the left.- Shut up, Joe!

0:32:02 > 0:32:06- What is the fastest you've ever driven?- The speed limit, Joe.

0:32:06 > 0:32:07That's the fastest.

0:32:07 > 0:32:11- SEAT THUMPS - Aagh! Oh, my God!

0:32:11 > 0:32:14- They're really distracting her. - She's not looking at them.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17- Where do I go?- Down here. - Keep going.- BLEEP- hell!

0:32:17 > 0:32:20Not very helpful. She'd be better thinking for herself.

0:32:20 > 0:32:24Where are we going? Do you want me to carry on reversing?

0:32:24 > 0:32:28Why is she down there? What sort of road is that?

0:32:28 > 0:32:31Why has she gone down there and that lorry's coming up there?

0:32:31 > 0:32:32The boys are really rubbish.

0:32:32 > 0:32:36- They're winding her up. - What did you think about Georgina?

0:32:36 > 0:32:39I think her friends were trying to put her off.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41Shut up, Joe!

0:32:41 > 0:32:45I think they were for having a laugh on Georgina's expense.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47Georgina's driving surprised me.

0:32:47 > 0:32:49I wasn't surprised that she got scared in the city,

0:32:49 > 0:32:54but I wasn't unduly worried, thinking she was going to do something silly.

0:32:54 > 0:32:58Let's see if former traffic cop Judith will be as impressed

0:32:58 > 0:33:01by Georgina's driving as her parents.

0:33:01 > 0:33:03Georgina's second journey,

0:33:03 > 0:33:09again we're following the pattern of her nervousness, her inexperience,

0:33:09 > 0:33:12her failure to make her own decisions.

0:33:12 > 0:33:15- Down this one?- That one, yeah.

0:33:15 > 0:33:19We have this constant pattern of, "Shall I, shan't I?

0:33:19 > 0:33:23"I'm frightened to death. I don't know what to do."

0:33:23 > 0:33:25You're scaring the hell out of me.

0:33:25 > 0:33:30All of this together makes for a very nervous driver

0:33:30 > 0:33:35and nervous drivers not only have accidents, but they cause accidents.

0:33:35 > 0:33:39With one journey left, Georgina will need to keep her nerves in check

0:33:39 > 0:33:42to have any chance of getting her own car.

0:33:47 > 0:33:50Over in the valleys, Welsh diva Matthew is getting his roots done

0:33:50 > 0:33:51at his auntie's hair salon.

0:33:51 > 0:33:56As a gay woman, Mary's been a huge influence in his life.

0:33:59 > 0:34:01When you were my age and obviously...

0:34:01 > 0:34:04How did you cope with all the bullying? What...?

0:34:04 > 0:34:06A little bit like you have, really.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10You tend to get a bit used to being different,

0:34:10 > 0:34:13so you tend to leave it brush off your shoulders.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16You either leave it get you and they affect your life

0:34:16 > 0:34:18or you rise above it.

0:34:18 > 0:34:19There was moments.

0:34:19 > 0:34:21I'm not saying that...

0:34:21 > 0:34:24You know, it upset me and affected me, I suppose, on times,

0:34:24 > 0:34:27but you've got to be strong and rise above it.

0:34:27 > 0:34:32I find every gay thing that they throw at me,

0:34:32 > 0:34:35it makes me stronger and the person I am because,

0:34:35 > 0:34:37obviously, I feed off them...

0:34:37 > 0:34:41- You take it as a positive, opposed to a negative?- Yeah.- Good.

0:34:41 > 0:34:44Obviously, I know who I am, so why tell me?

0:34:44 > 0:34:47Because obviously I know myself.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50- Are you comfortable with the way you are?- Yeah.

0:34:50 > 0:34:55- Sometimes it overwhelms you, being picked on maybe?- Yeah.

0:34:55 > 0:34:57Like the time you were in the restaurant

0:34:57 > 0:35:00and you rang me and you were having a panic attack?

0:35:00 > 0:35:03That then goes into a different...

0:35:03 > 0:35:05It's different because obviously...

0:35:05 > 0:35:08- You're frightened. - I've been attacked.- Yeah.

0:35:13 > 0:35:15Georgina's week is almost over

0:35:15 > 0:35:19and soon she'll have to surrender the car,

0:35:19 > 0:35:24but before that happens, she's got another party in another town.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26This time, she's off clubbing in Nottingham.

0:35:26 > 0:35:30With three pick-ups on the way, her car will be jam-packed.

0:35:30 > 0:35:34It's 80 miles and should take just under two hours, all going well,

0:35:34 > 0:35:36but she's got Joe sat next to her again

0:35:36 > 0:35:39and he's already serving the pre-drinks.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43- BOTTLES CLANK - Whoa!

0:35:43 > 0:35:48Whoa! This is why you were demoted to the back, Joe.

0:35:48 > 0:35:52- Joe, move your leg!- I'm sorry... - How many times?!

0:35:52 > 0:35:58I'll start thinking it's the gear stick, then we're in real trouble!

0:35:58 > 0:36:00Wisely though, she's booked a hotel room in advance,

0:36:00 > 0:36:03so she can relax and enjoy herself.

0:36:03 > 0:36:04Only problem is,

0:36:04 > 0:36:08it's right in the city centre, Georgina's worst nightmare.

0:36:12 > 0:36:14- Ramada?- Yes!- It's on the right.

0:36:14 > 0:36:19- Yes! Finally!- I take full credit for that.- Can I park there?

0:36:19 > 0:36:23# I'm at a payphone trying to call home... #

0:36:23 > 0:36:26The hotel's located, but there's no parking.

0:36:26 > 0:36:30That's OK because it's only 100 metres away. Easy!

0:36:30 > 0:36:32- I've just said this.- "From the hotel entrance,

0:36:32 > 0:36:35"take a right-hand turn into Hanley Street."

0:36:35 > 0:36:37Oh. I've gone left.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40Taking a wrong turn, she ends up on the one-way system

0:36:40 > 0:36:45and any decision-making ability she had goes into meltdown.

0:36:45 > 0:36:49- Where do I go now? Do I have to go left?- Yeah, left.

0:36:49 > 0:36:52Can I get in this lane? I'm going left, then?

0:36:52 > 0:36:54Left or straight?

0:36:54 > 0:36:57- I've had enough of your attitude. - Joe, shut up a minute!

0:36:57 > 0:37:01Will everyone be quiet before I punch you all?

0:37:01 > 0:37:03- So where do I go now?- Left.

0:37:03 > 0:37:08- Someone tell me. Left or...? - Left, tell her!- I'm going left, then?

0:37:08 > 0:37:11Oh, we've been down this road about four million times.

0:37:11 > 0:37:13Yeah, then there's a left...

0:37:13 > 0:37:15Down here?

0:37:15 > 0:37:18After 40 minutes of city centre driving,

0:37:18 > 0:37:21more by luck than judgment, she finds the car park,

0:37:21 > 0:37:24just metres from where they originally were.

0:37:24 > 0:37:29Can I just go in this one? I'm just going straight forward.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32# I'm at a payphone... #

0:37:32 > 0:37:36- I'm really thirsty. - You guys need to stick together.

0:37:36 > 0:37:40The night is still young and after more friends arrive,

0:37:40 > 0:37:43they now have enough drink to sink a ship,

0:37:43 > 0:37:45but someone forgot the bottle-opener.

0:37:45 > 0:37:48Luckily, mate Ollie's teeth are on hand.

0:37:48 > 0:37:50Thanks.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01Although not driving home until tomorrow,

0:38:01 > 0:38:04Georgina's mothering instinct stops her from over-indulging,

0:38:04 > 0:38:06unlike her mates.

0:38:09 > 0:38:12Yeah, I think it's a good night.

0:38:12 > 0:38:15I feel like I have to check on everybody else

0:38:15 > 0:38:18because everybody else seems just so smashed.

0:38:18 > 0:38:21Not that Georgina can help mate Joe.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23I've tried to calm down my drinking,

0:38:23 > 0:38:27so you don't catch me on camera with anyone I shouldn't be.

0:38:28 > 0:38:30Whoops!

0:38:37 > 0:38:40Next morning, with hangovers all round and faced with the drive home,

0:38:40 > 0:38:42Georgina makes a sensible decision.

0:38:42 > 0:38:45I'm not going to drive back this morning.

0:38:45 > 0:38:49I'll drive back later when I feel a bit more ready to drive.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52I feel like I'm a bit over the limit.

0:38:52 > 0:38:56I don't think it'd be a good idea, so I'll just wait until later.

0:38:56 > 0:39:00With one in six people prosecuted for drink-driving the morning after,

0:39:00 > 0:39:02she's made the right choice.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08The following day marks the end of Georgina's week.

0:39:08 > 0:39:10She has no idea that mum Mandy and dad Rob

0:39:10 > 0:39:13have been secretly watching what she's been up to,

0:39:13 > 0:39:15but they won't be alone

0:39:15 > 0:39:18in deciding if Georgina deserves a car of her own.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21Judith is on her way to watch the final journey with them.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24At the moment, Georgina is showing all the classic signs

0:39:24 > 0:39:26of complete fear.

0:39:26 > 0:39:29She's all right on the country roads,

0:39:29 > 0:39:32but as soon as you put Georgina in the town centre,

0:39:32 > 0:39:34she goes completely to pieces,

0:39:34 > 0:39:38which is a really dangerous position to be in.

0:39:40 > 0:39:44The three of them sit down to watch Georgina's third road trip.

0:39:45 > 0:39:50- I've had enough of your attitude... - Shut up a minute!

0:39:50 > 0:39:53Will everyone just be quiet before I punch you all?

0:39:53 > 0:39:57She's not comfortable. She looks frightened to death.

0:39:57 > 0:40:01Her whole body language changes. She doesn't know where she's going.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04Nobody in the car is any great help.

0:40:04 > 0:40:07Where do I go now? Do I have to go left?

0:40:07 > 0:40:11- Yeah, left.- Can I get down here? Are you sure I can go in here?

0:40:11 > 0:40:14Again we're following the same pattern of unsure.

0:40:14 > 0:40:18"What should I do? Where should I go? Can I park here?"

0:40:18 > 0:40:21- She was frightened to death.- Yeah.

0:40:21 > 0:40:25At least she didn't get involved in the carnage of their behaviour.

0:40:25 > 0:40:29I would have been very concerned if she'd been looking at them.

0:40:29 > 0:40:30Turning round and...

0:40:30 > 0:40:33I think she'll be a very nice driver.

0:40:33 > 0:40:38- It's experience, isn't it? - It's getting there.

0:40:42 > 0:40:45Heading back home to drop the keys off,

0:40:45 > 0:40:51Georgina is completely oblivious as to what she is about to face inside.

0:40:51 > 0:40:55- Hi, Georgina.- Hello.- Hello.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58Come in and sit down. We've been keeping an eye on your driving.

0:40:58 > 0:41:00- And this is Judith.- Hello.

0:41:00 > 0:41:03You know you think they've been filming you out and about?

0:41:03 > 0:41:04They've been watching you driving

0:41:04 > 0:41:06and we've been looking at your driving

0:41:06 > 0:41:08and commenting on your driving.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13Great(!)

0:41:13 > 0:41:15I'm a retired traffic police officer.

0:41:15 > 0:41:18I've been brought in to look at your journeys

0:41:18 > 0:41:22and make my comments on how I think you've done.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25There's a little bit of a twist to the whole process

0:41:25 > 0:41:30because if I think you would benefit from advanced driving lessons,

0:41:30 > 0:41:33then you'd have a two-day course

0:41:33 > 0:41:35learning how to drive the advanced way

0:41:35 > 0:41:37or if I thought that you were ready,

0:41:37 > 0:41:41we would give you some money towards a car of your own.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45That sounds better than the first one! OK...

0:41:48 > 0:41:52Now it's time for Georgina to watch herself in the driving seat.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56'What did you do? I can't look...'

0:41:56 > 0:41:58I think you'd just received a text here.

0:41:58 > 0:42:01Your attitude to the phone is fantastic.

0:42:01 > 0:42:03SEAT THUMPS

0:42:03 > 0:42:06- He slammed his chair back. - Did it scare you?

0:42:06 > 0:42:07I didn't know what it was.

0:42:07 > 0:42:09'You told me down that one!'

0:42:09 > 0:42:12You'd got yourself into such a state by then,

0:42:12 > 0:42:15you just thought, "I need to get off the road."

0:42:17 > 0:42:20- You don't like driving in town, do you?- No.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23You looked so frightened and so out of your depth

0:42:23 > 0:42:26and your passengers weren't any help.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28It looked like you were drowning.

0:42:28 > 0:42:32The viewing's over and it's Georgina's right to reply.

0:42:32 > 0:42:35So, Georgina, how do you think you've done?

0:42:35 > 0:42:37I think I did OK until I got into a city

0:42:37 > 0:42:39and I didn't know where to go,

0:42:39 > 0:42:42but I've never driven in a big city before,

0:42:42 > 0:42:44I don't really get the one-way systems that much.

0:42:44 > 0:42:47That's just because you're very nervous.

0:42:47 > 0:42:51You can see your knuckles tense on the steering wheel.

0:42:51 > 0:42:54You panic and you're not looking around you.

0:42:54 > 0:42:57You need to be more aware of what's around you.

0:42:57 > 0:42:59Before Judith makes her final decision,

0:42:59 > 0:43:02she has some information revealed to her

0:43:02 > 0:43:06by the car's hidden secret weapon.

0:43:06 > 0:43:08In the car, there's a telemetry box

0:43:08 > 0:43:12which is a little black box that records all your speed.

0:43:12 > 0:43:14It shows what you've been doing

0:43:14 > 0:43:18when the cameras are on you and when the cameras are off you.

0:43:18 > 0:43:24Now, there was one particular time which did concern me

0:43:24 > 0:43:28which was on the way back from Nottingham when you were on the A1.

0:43:30 > 0:43:34- 100 mile an hour, which is what it's showing...- I didn't go that fast.

0:43:34 > 0:43:39I was looking at the speed thing. I definitely did not go 100.

0:43:39 > 0:43:43Well, the box showed that sort of speeds.

0:43:43 > 0:43:47That's a straight disqualification if you got caught.

0:43:47 > 0:43:49It was quite out of character for you

0:43:49 > 0:43:56because right up until that moment, you'd been quite aware of your speed

0:43:56 > 0:43:58and keeping within the speed limit,

0:43:58 > 0:44:01then all of a sudden, you have this mad moment.

0:44:01 > 0:44:03Any reason for that?

0:44:03 > 0:44:08It was just because it was empty. There was no-one there.

0:44:12 > 0:44:14It's crunch time for Georgina.

0:44:16 > 0:44:19This has been a really hard decision for me to make,

0:44:19 > 0:44:22but your overall nervousness

0:44:22 > 0:44:26and lack of concentration,

0:44:26 > 0:44:29hesitancy, not sure what to do,

0:44:29 > 0:44:32asking passengers which way to go...

0:44:35 > 0:44:38I really think that you would benefit from driving lessons on this case

0:44:38 > 0:44:42because it would teach you how to drive properly

0:44:42 > 0:44:47and give you more confidence.

0:44:47 > 0:44:48OK.

0:44:48 > 0:44:51Georgina's speeding when she thought she wasn't being watched,

0:44:51 > 0:44:52plus her nervousness in town centres,

0:44:52 > 0:44:55let her down massively.

0:44:55 > 0:44:56Rather than a car,

0:44:56 > 0:45:00she will have to settle for going on an advanced driving course.

0:45:00 > 0:45:03We thought you'd done really well. We did.

0:45:03 > 0:45:06Thanks.

0:45:09 > 0:45:12Over in South Wales, it's nearly the end of Matthew's week

0:45:12 > 0:45:15and he's using his last chance with the car to escape Pontardawe

0:45:15 > 0:45:18and explore the nightlife of Cardiff...

0:45:21 > 0:45:23..if he ever decides what to wear.

0:45:23 > 0:45:25- You look lush, babe!- Job done.

0:45:25 > 0:45:28Then it's just the boyfriend holding things up

0:45:28 > 0:45:30as there is some serious drinking to be done

0:45:30 > 0:45:33and Beth and Chelsea are already on the vodka.

0:45:33 > 0:45:34Not Matthew, though.

0:45:34 > 0:45:38- I'll just stick to my Coke. - Oh, bless you! We'll drink for you.

0:45:38 > 0:45:41Before he leaves, he gets a few pointers from Mum.

0:45:41 > 0:45:44Enjoy tonight. Take your time. Don't be drinking.

0:45:44 > 0:45:47- I'm not going to be drinking.- That's mine anyway.

0:45:47 > 0:45:50You don't need alcohol to have fun.

0:45:50 > 0:45:52With all three crammed in,

0:45:52 > 0:45:56Matthew will be driving the rowdy bunch all the way to Cardiff.

0:45:56 > 0:46:00The journey is a distance of 50 miles and even though it's an hour,

0:46:00 > 0:46:04he's decided to forgo the booze to drive everyone back later.

0:46:12 > 0:46:14Glad we got that sorted!

0:46:14 > 0:46:15With Liam on hand to provide

0:46:15 > 0:46:18the essential lip balm to the driver, all seems to be well,

0:46:18 > 0:46:22although there may be a problem from Chelsea in the back.

0:46:27 > 0:46:28Really?

0:46:32 > 0:46:34Pee in my car and I'll rub your nose like a dog.

0:46:38 > 0:46:39- CHELSEA LAUGHS - You dirty...

0:46:39 > 0:46:43- You go on the motorway there.- The M4?- Yeah.- Yeah, I know.

0:46:43 > 0:46:47The toilet situation in the rear is getting worse, though,

0:46:47 > 0:46:50and Chelsea needs drastic action to pee,

0:46:50 > 0:46:53like pulling on to the hard shoulder on the M4.

0:46:58 > 0:47:02Matthew's right, the hard shoulder should only be used

0:47:02 > 0:47:03in an absolute emergency,

0:47:03 > 0:47:05and needing a pee doesn't count as one.

0:47:07 > 0:47:12I'm going to Merthyr now, Liam. No, Liam. I'm in the wrong lane.

0:47:12 > 0:47:17Back on track now, it's Matthew's favourite part of driving - parking!

0:47:17 > 0:47:20Happy days, I'm in.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23He's even managed to avoid the concrete pillars this time

0:47:23 > 0:47:25a faultless drive comes to an end.

0:47:25 > 0:47:29# Let's go crazy, crazy, crazy till we see the sun

0:47:29 > 0:47:33# I know we only met but let's pretend it's love

0:47:33 > 0:47:37# And never, never, never stop for anyone

0:47:37 > 0:47:40# Tonight let's get some... #

0:47:40 > 0:47:44Everyone else is on the Jagerbombs and he's on the soft stuff,

0:47:44 > 0:47:46but despite the temptation,

0:47:46 > 0:47:49it looks like, tonight, Matthew is being a good boy.

0:47:49 > 0:47:52No drink for me tonight as I'm driving home.

0:47:52 > 0:47:55It doesn't really bother me. I'm not a big drinker.

0:47:55 > 0:47:59Someone's got to look after them, so I'm happy.

0:47:59 > 0:48:05# Tonight let's get some and live while we're young

0:48:05 > 0:48:07# Whoa-oa-oa, oh, oh, oh

0:48:08 > 0:48:09# Whoa-oa-oa, oh, oh, oh

0:48:11 > 0:48:13# And live while we're young... #

0:48:13 > 0:48:16Having managed to stay off the booze,

0:48:16 > 0:48:19a sober Matthew is in fine shape to drive everyone home tonight.

0:48:24 > 0:48:28The next day brings an end to Matthew's week with his mum's car

0:48:28 > 0:48:30and Judith is on her way to Auntie Mary's house in Swansea

0:48:30 > 0:48:32to have a look at his final journey,

0:48:32 > 0:48:35though she has concerns.

0:48:35 > 0:48:39Matthew's first drive was really very good, considering he hadn't

0:48:39 > 0:48:42been in a car without an instructor before.

0:48:42 > 0:48:46Being a new driver he coped with the everyday driving very well,

0:48:46 > 0:48:48I was quite pleased.

0:48:48 > 0:48:51His second drive, however, was marred by running a red light

0:48:51 > 0:48:53which was out of character for him,

0:48:53 > 0:48:57and then he overreacted when somebody threw a snowball at the window,

0:48:57 > 0:49:00and he got enraged and angry and totally lost control,

0:49:00 > 0:49:04which was a shame, because now I'm in a very difficult position

0:49:04 > 0:49:08as to what to do. I shall be interested to see

0:49:08 > 0:49:10how he manages the third drive,

0:49:10 > 0:49:13to see whether or not he is the safe driver that I think he is.

0:49:13 > 0:49:17If he can show he's turned things around this time,

0:49:17 > 0:49:20he could be driving off with his very own car.

0:49:20 > 0:49:22In an emergency, you can.

0:49:22 > 0:49:24If you break down, you can go on it,

0:49:24 > 0:49:27- but if it's not an emergency, you don't.- It's an emergency for her.

0:49:27 > 0:49:31- It sounds like they're asking him to use the hard shoulder.- Yeah.

0:49:31 > 0:49:34More cars are hit whilst on the hard shoulder

0:49:34 > 0:49:37than actually use the hard shoulder.

0:49:37 > 0:49:39It's a terribly dangerous place to be

0:49:39 > 0:49:44and you really only want to go on there in absolute emergencies -

0:49:44 > 0:49:46your car has broken down.

0:49:46 > 0:49:50- Don't...- Don't worry about it. We'll get there with the sat-nav now.

0:49:50 > 0:49:56This is something that has been my biggest concern with Matthew.

0:49:56 > 0:49:58It's the animation in the car.

0:49:58 > 0:50:02- Yes.- If he was on a driving test, he wouldn't pass.

0:50:02 > 0:50:04His hands are all over the place.

0:50:04 > 0:50:07He's got to keep them on the steering wheel. He's got to.

0:50:07 > 0:50:09Yeah.

0:50:10 > 0:50:15Matthew heads over to his aunt's house to simply drop off the car,

0:50:15 > 0:50:16or so he thinks.

0:50:16 > 0:50:20He has no idea what he is about to be faced with once inside.

0:50:24 > 0:50:29- All right, boy?- Yeah.- We've been watching what you've been doing.

0:50:30 > 0:50:32You can go red.

0:50:32 > 0:50:34Can I just die now? You've seen the bump?

0:50:34 > 0:50:39I heard the bump. I didn't see the bump. I heard the bump!

0:50:39 > 0:50:42- This is Judith.- Hiya.- She'll tell you what's going to go on.

0:50:42 > 0:50:48I'm an ex-traffic police officer. It's my job to look at your driving.

0:50:48 > 0:50:52- Right.- I have to decide whether to reward you

0:50:52 > 0:50:56with a car of your own or advanced driving lessons

0:50:56 > 0:51:00if I think you're not quite ready for your own wheels.

0:51:00 > 0:51:04- Right, OK.- OK? And that's what this whole show is based on.

0:51:04 > 0:51:07So how does that make you feel?

0:51:07 > 0:51:12Nervous. I feel sick. My stomach's curdling.

0:51:12 > 0:51:17Sitting down, Matthew finally gets to see his driving for himself.

0:51:17 > 0:51:20'Yes, it's mine for a week, bitch!'

0:51:20 > 0:51:24- You've got to keep your hands on the steering wheel.- Right, yeah.

0:51:24 > 0:51:28- I notice that a lot. - Were you taught to do all this?- No.

0:51:28 > 0:51:30- So not a great habit to have.- No.

0:51:30 > 0:51:33GIGGLING IN CAR

0:51:37 > 0:51:40- SHARP BANG - 'Oh,- BLEEP!

0:51:40 > 0:51:44'I reversed. I was looking more behind than in front of me.

0:51:44 > 0:51:45'I scratched the wall.'

0:51:45 > 0:51:48And this is the snowball. I remember the blue car.

0:51:48 > 0:51:51'Oh, my God! Oh, my God!'

0:51:51 > 0:51:55The best thing you could have done there was just to ignore it.

0:51:55 > 0:52:00You went on to chase after them and try and get their numberplate.

0:52:00 > 0:52:02- It could have turned really horrid. - Yeah.

0:52:02 > 0:52:05With the viewing over, Matthew gets a chance to put his side across.

0:52:05 > 0:52:09OK, so, Matt, tell me how you feel.

0:52:09 > 0:52:12I feel very sick and very nervous,

0:52:12 > 0:52:16but in a way, I'm kind of happy and...

0:52:16 > 0:52:20I've done a couple of mistakes there,

0:52:20 > 0:52:23- but you learn from your mistakes.- OK.

0:52:23 > 0:52:27Tell me what it would mean to you to have your own car.

0:52:27 > 0:52:29It would mean absolutely everything

0:52:29 > 0:52:31to me because obviously I get abuse on the bus.

0:52:31 > 0:52:35I don't quite know how to put it.

0:52:38 > 0:52:41- It's OK.- I get a lot of abuse.

0:52:42 > 0:52:45Is this travelling to college and...?

0:52:45 > 0:52:47Travelling to college, Swansea,

0:52:47 > 0:52:50I get abuse anywhere I go, but obviously, I don't let it show.

0:52:50 > 0:52:55- OK.- Obviously, I bottle it up, but it does get to you a bit.- OK.

0:52:55 > 0:53:00Obviously, if I had my own car, it would make me feel safer and...

0:53:00 > 0:53:03- Yeah, I'd just feel safer.- OK.

0:53:08 > 0:53:11In the car is a little box, it's a telemetry box,

0:53:11 > 0:53:13and it records all your speed.

0:53:13 > 0:53:16Obviously, I've looked at that read-out

0:53:16 > 0:53:20and there's no speeding at all.

0:53:20 > 0:53:26You're actually, throughout, when the cameras are on you and off you,

0:53:26 > 0:53:31your speed's been very good, so that's a big plus.

0:53:31 > 0:53:34I think on this occasion, and although it pains me to say...

0:53:40 > 0:53:42..you're going to have to give up the bus.

0:53:42 > 0:53:44I'm giving you your own car.

0:53:48 > 0:53:49SOBBING

0:54:01 > 0:54:04You'll have me at it now.

0:54:04 > 0:54:07Judith believes with less animation when driving,

0:54:07 > 0:54:08and more concentration at traffic lights,

0:54:08 > 0:54:13lessons he has taken on board, Matthew is a very safe driver.

0:54:15 > 0:54:17Obviously, it's great news to hear that someone says,

0:54:17 > 0:54:18"Yeah, you can drive,"

0:54:18 > 0:54:22and it was just great news to hear from her.

0:54:22 > 0:54:28I'm feeling very excited and...it's hard to explain how I'm feeling.

0:54:28 > 0:54:30I can drive, I can explore everywhere I go.

0:54:30 > 0:54:32It will be something new to try out.

0:54:32 > 0:54:35None of us have ever won anything in our lives.

0:54:35 > 0:54:39You don't need anything. You won me, I'm your sister. I'm brilliant.

0:54:39 > 0:54:42ALL: Cheers!

0:54:51 > 0:54:53A few weeks later, and Georgina's out

0:54:53 > 0:54:57getting some much-needed inner city driving experience.

0:54:57 > 0:54:59I sent George on an advanced driving course

0:54:59 > 0:55:01because I think she'll benefit from the lessons.

0:55:01 > 0:55:03She is not coping at all in towns.

0:55:03 > 0:55:05She's scared to death,

0:55:05 > 0:55:09indecisive, frightened, and my heart went out to her.

0:55:15 > 0:55:18I've learned more driving in the city,

0:55:18 > 0:55:21like how to do the lanes and the one-way system

0:55:21 > 0:55:26because I didn't have that where I lived, so it's now easier to realise

0:55:26 > 0:55:27where I'm supposed to be going

0:55:27 > 0:55:31and which lane means what when going round the roundabout.

0:55:32 > 0:55:38And the day has also come for Matthew to pick up his first motor.

0:55:38 > 0:55:40Your own first car... Excited?

0:55:40 > 0:55:44- I'm excited, but I'm a bit nervous. - Just take your time.

0:55:44 > 0:55:47Are you going to get stickers across the front with furry dice,

0:55:47 > 0:55:49"Matthew and Liam" written across the front?

0:55:49 > 0:55:53- I can't see that happening. - That ain't happening.

0:55:55 > 0:55:57- TOOTS HORN - With his own set of wheels,

0:55:57 > 0:56:01he'll finally feel much safer out and about.

0:56:01 > 0:56:03Matthew is a very young driver.

0:56:03 > 0:56:08He's never driven on his own, without an instructor.

0:56:08 > 0:56:11He's taken the car, he's gone out, he's driven very well.

0:56:11 > 0:56:13Yes, he's made a few mistakes.

0:56:13 > 0:56:16I've talked to him about his misdemeanours.

0:56:16 > 0:56:21He's taken it all on board. You learn how to pass a test.

0:56:21 > 0:56:23You get the test done, you get your licence,

0:56:23 > 0:56:24and that's when you go out,

0:56:24 > 0:56:26and that's when you really learn how to drive,

0:56:26 > 0:56:29when you're mingling with the traffic.

0:56:29 > 0:56:31Matthew has his own car now.

0:56:31 > 0:56:33He will go out there, he will settle down, he'll take on board

0:56:33 > 0:56:35everything I've said to him,

0:56:35 > 0:56:36he'll look ahead,

0:56:36 > 0:56:38he'll plan, he'll relax,

0:56:38 > 0:56:40he'll concentrate,

0:56:40 > 0:56:45and he will become a very good and competent, safe driver.
