0:00:02 > 0:00:04Tonight, the motorway cops work as a team...

0:00:04 > 0:00:07Into that lane, mate, get into the third lane.

0:00:07 > 0:00:08..on the ground...

0:00:08 > 0:00:10OK, we've got a possible here.

0:00:10 > 0:00:11..and in the air.

0:00:11 > 0:00:15Can we have a vehicle down to Stratford Road junction of College Road, over?

0:00:15 > 0:00:17Stopping travelling criminals...

0:00:17 > 0:00:19We've got a vehicle failing to stop.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21..searching for drugs...

0:00:21 > 0:00:26- There's got to be something in this car.- Don't insult me. I know what's in there.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Oh, lovely. Possibly cocaine.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32..and taking car thieves off the streets.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35He's going off road, he's going off road.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37'It's bang out of order. We all joined the police'

0:00:37 > 0:00:41to make 100% effort to catch these people.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44You know, and if we can, that's what we'll do.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46This programme contains some strong language.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Ten miles east of Birmingham on the M6, PCs Andy Collins

0:01:16 > 0:01:20and Dajlit Nijjar are racing to reach a car that's trying

0:01:20 > 0:01:24to outrun traffic officers who are in hot pursuit.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26We've responded to a vehicle that's failed to stop

0:01:26 > 0:01:28for a local traffic unit.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33It's entered the motorway and we're making progress towards it.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35The traffic car's updating other units

0:01:35 > 0:01:37as they try to stop the speeding car.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40- RADIO:- 'Still lane two, 100mph, OK, over.'

0:01:40 > 0:01:41But they're travelling so fast,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45the fear is the motorway cops won't be able to catch up with the chase.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47It's going as almost as quick as we're going.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49We're not that far behind.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52'We was trying to gain on it, so we was trying to get'

0:01:52 > 0:01:56more police vehicles with it and try and get the helicopter up as well

0:01:56 > 0:01:59to help with the pursuit cos that's the best tool that we've got.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06The police helicopter travels at more than 130mph.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09But, more importantly, it doesn't have to follow the roads,

0:02:09 > 0:02:13so it can get above a chase in a matter of minutes.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16We are attending, we're about a minute away. Over.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Oscar one, continue.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20As the helicopter heads cross country,

0:02:20 > 0:02:24on the ground, PCs Collins and Nijjar are also pushing their car

0:02:24 > 0:02:26to the limit and are in sight of the chase.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Oscar Tango two two, we are behind you now.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32- RADIO:- 'Oscar Tango two two, can you move over?

0:02:32 > 0:02:34'We need to get this sorted ASAP.'

0:02:34 > 0:02:38Yes, yes, we are in a Range Rover. I don't know if you guys want to do

0:02:38 > 0:02:41a passing manoeuvre and we'll take over pursuit commander, over.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44PC Nijjar's taken control on the ground

0:02:44 > 0:02:46and his plan is to surround the car and force it to stop.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Get into that lane, mate. Get into the third lane.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52'Speed is one zero zero, 100mph.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56'We'll try and keep him on, it's one Asian male driver.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00- 'Go, go, go.'- Stay here, stay here.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02'Try and keep him on the motorway, received.'

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Surrounding a speeding car on the motorway is a risky manoeuvre

0:03:05 > 0:03:07but one the cops are experts in.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10They want him staying on, yeah?

0:03:10 > 0:03:12RADIO CHATTER

0:03:12 > 0:03:14'We ideally wanted to keep it on the motorway.'

0:03:14 > 0:03:18But the car wasn't being driven... It was being driven dangerously.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21'Speed is one zero, zero, 100mph.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24'He's changing lanes from three to one.'

0:03:24 > 0:03:27But just as the cops get into position,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29the driver sees a way out... a junction up ahead.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32'Two, two he's going to go off, he's going to go off.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34'Stand by, stand by.'

0:03:35 > 0:03:38It's just what they don't need.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42With seconds to spare, the driver takes a sharp left towards the exit.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46'We're off the motorway into Rugby.'

0:03:46 > 0:03:48The cops' plans have gone out the window.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50They'll have to think again.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52'It's no good just pursuing a car.'

0:03:52 > 0:03:55We've got to have a plan to be able to stop it safely.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58A chase off the motorway through busy streets

0:03:58 > 0:04:00can be much more dangerous.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03The traffic patrol offers an extreme solution.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Can we get tactical contact before this gets out of control?

0:04:06 > 0:04:07We can take him out.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Tactical contact means deliberately hitting the car

0:04:10 > 0:04:12and forcing it to stop.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15But it's rarely sanctioned and this is no exception.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26To confirm we are above and we are recording, over.

0:04:26 > 0:04:27With the arrival of the chopper,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30senior officers have decided it's safer to pull back.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Yeah, basically the helicopter's above now.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36We're into the Warwickshire area onto A roads, so we're backing off

0:04:36 > 0:04:39because the helicopter will give the commentary and it's safer then.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42At the moment, we're going to think of some tactics now.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Just bear with me.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47With the helicopter keeping an eye on where the car is going,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49the cops regroup to plan their next move.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- RADIO:- 'Have we got anyone with stingers ahead of us?'

0:04:53 > 0:04:56If they can get ahead of the car, they can use the stinger strip

0:04:56 > 0:04:58to puncture its tyres and bring it to a stop.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02What we're trying to do is get this vehicle stung

0:05:02 > 0:05:04and hopefully go for that interception.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06If we get a chance we will T-pack this.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09We will do what we call a 'boxing manoeuvre' on this vehicle.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12We were on country roads, some of them were unlit.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14He's going at high speeds,

0:05:14 > 0:05:17sometimes on the wrong side of the road as well so, you know,

0:05:17 > 0:05:20you're thinking at the back of your mind what could happen.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24Roger, he's into the village

0:05:24 > 0:05:27and we've got about an hour's worth of fuel, over.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30The plan depends on the helicopter keeping tabs on the car

0:05:30 > 0:05:33and letting the cops with the stinger know exactly where it's headed.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Tango Charlie seven four, we're in Brinklow now with stinger.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Charlie seven four in Brinklow with stinger.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Alpha Oscar one update, over.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45Roger, Alpha Oscar one.

0:05:45 > 0:05:50Still B4027, I think it was, back into Brinklow, over.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Towards Brinklow, over.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56Tango Charlie, unit call sign in Brinklow with stinger.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00The stinger unit's in place, but something's gone wrong.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03Did they sting him there because there was a car sat there?

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Seven four, we weren't quick enough.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09The cops couldn't get the stinger deployed in time.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12He's coming to a T-junction. I'll tell you which way he's going. Over.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15They need to devise a new plan of action.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17But their luck may have turned.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21I don't think this bloke knows where he's going, does he?

0:06:21 > 0:06:25He's gone lightside. He did a right at the T-junction and then a first left.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28The driver may be lost, but 600 feet above him,

0:06:28 > 0:06:30the chopper can see exactly where he's going.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32Right, he's come out of Brinklow

0:06:32 > 0:06:35and he's on an unnamed road towards Coventry Way.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Dead end, we think.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Now it's the driver who needs a new plan.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44Alpha Oscar one an update, over.

0:06:44 > 0:06:45With the road ahead blocked,

0:06:45 > 0:06:49he veers into the bushes looking for a way out.

0:06:49 > 0:06:50But his car is going nowhere.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54Roger, all units make the night sun. All units make the night sun.

0:06:54 > 0:06:55Vehicle's stopped.

0:06:55 > 0:07:00Immediately, the car is surrounded by the cops.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02'It was a bit of a hectic scene

0:07:02 > 0:07:06'because we thought that these males had run off into the fields.'

0:07:06 > 0:07:08But when I went over to the vehicle, all these...

0:07:08 > 0:07:11about four or five people were still in the vehicle.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13DOGS BARK

0:07:13 > 0:07:17Out the car! Hands behind your back.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21OK, after three. One, two, three and up.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Can I get me shoes?! My shoes.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27We'll worry about that later, matey.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31Yeah, basically...the vehicle's come to a rest,

0:07:31 > 0:07:35the occupants haven't legged it, so I think we've got four in custody.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37As you can see, the car's obviously lost control,

0:07:37 > 0:07:40come to a dead end and crashed.

0:07:40 > 0:07:41There are four teenagers.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45But the one the cops really want is the driver who's tried to pull a fast one.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49The driver's trying to be clever and he jumped into the back seat

0:07:49 > 0:07:52so he couldn't be identified as the driver but, luckily,

0:07:52 > 0:07:56one of the traffic vehicles that were behind it originally

0:07:56 > 0:07:58could ID the driver straight away.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Because the driver's too young to have a licence,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04the cops suspect he's taken the car without the owner's consent.

0:08:04 > 0:08:09And that may also explain why he took such risks to try to get away.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12The use of police helicopters to keep track of criminals

0:08:12 > 0:08:15trying to flee from the cops is on the increase.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19And here, in the Midlands, with more than 500 miles of roads to patrol,

0:08:19 > 0:08:23the Central Motorway Police Group can call on

0:08:23 > 0:08:26two, £5 million choppers, to help stop drivers

0:08:26 > 0:08:29who they think are breaking the law.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34On the M5, south of Birmingham, PCs Adam Toal and John Martin

0:08:34 > 0:08:37have been called in to support colleagues who are following

0:08:37 > 0:08:38a suspect car.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42We've got information that there's a car that's involved in drugs supply.

0:08:42 > 0:08:47It's gone up towards the top end of the motorway, M6,

0:08:47 > 0:08:49and it's now coming back down.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52Hopefully, we can assist the other officers in stopping the vehicle

0:08:52 > 0:08:55and if there's any drugs on board then we can recover them

0:08:55 > 0:08:58and deal with the person that's got them.

0:08:58 > 0:09:03Meanwhile, the West Midlands police helicopter, Alpha Oscar one,

0:09:03 > 0:09:06is also on its way to help out.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10The helicopter can say exactly where it's going and it can give us time

0:09:10 > 0:09:12to enable to get us in position

0:09:12 > 0:09:16and sort out tactics well before the vehicle's even near us.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19- Coming up towards junction one, mate.- Yep. Cheers, mate.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22As the helicopter crew updates the cops with their progress...

0:09:22 > 0:09:25Mike Alpha, we're over the M5 now.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28We are downlinking, just trying to pick the vehicle up.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32The vehicle is committed, two, three.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36..PCs Toal and Martin are closing in from the other direction.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39We can get to four, mate, I think.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42They plan to use a stinger to stop the car at the junction

0:09:42 > 0:09:43beyond Frankley Services.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Nine two. One mile to Frankley.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49- One mile to Frankley. - OK, mate, stinger.- Yeah.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- Mike Alpha.- Yeah, we'll have stinger ready at junction four.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57If the vehicle does fail to stop when the officers put the lights

0:09:57 > 0:10:00and sirens on, they'll be able to force it off at junction four

0:10:00 > 0:10:01and we'll be able to sting it.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Get the vehicle stopped, hopefully get the drugs.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06Everyone's a winner.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08Things never sort of happen that way though, do they?

0:10:08 > 0:10:11Nine two, nine two all patrols. It looks like

0:10:11 > 0:10:14he's coming off at Frankley.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17The suspects in the car may be wise to the cops on their tail.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Mike Alpha, I've got an off off, Frankley Services.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21Off off at Frankley Services.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23There's no place for the stinger now.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Yeah, OK, we'll make up that way, then.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28As the driver heads into the service station,

0:10:28 > 0:10:32two unmarked patrol cars quickly move to block his exit.

0:10:32 > 0:10:33Vehicle stopped.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35But it looks like he has other ideas.

0:10:35 > 0:10:40He accelerates away, leaving the cops scrambling to catch up.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Mike Alpha, we've got vehicle failing to stop now.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46He's going to be making his exit now back on towards the motorway.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49They lose sight of the car for crucial seconds as it speeds

0:10:49 > 0:10:51through an underpass.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55Failed to stop, junction four, M5.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58But, just as PCs Toal and Martin pull into the services,

0:10:58 > 0:11:02one of the unmarked patrol cars catches up with the driver.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05Mike Alpha, vehicle is round the back of the service station.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07Now he looks like he's boxed in.

0:11:07 > 0:11:08This time he's going nowhere.

0:11:08 > 0:11:13Yeah, we do have the vehicle stopped and two detained, over.

0:11:13 > 0:11:18As PCs Toal and Martin get to the car, it's all over.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21..anything you do may be given in evidence. Do you understand?

0:11:21 > 0:11:23The men appear to have no drugs on them.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26But the helicopter crew noticed something as the car

0:11:26 > 0:11:28emerged from the tunnel.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31It did look like he threw something out as he was going through

0:11:31 > 0:11:33the underpass of the main service station.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Threw something out of the window.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38Basically, he's come onto the services,

0:11:38 > 0:11:40rammed the silver police vehicle here

0:11:40 > 0:11:42and tried to make good their escape.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44They've got nowhere to go.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48And two have been detained for possession with intent to supply.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51- Where did they lob the stuff, mate? - Under the tunnel.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55The common rule of thumb with most people that are carrying drugs

0:11:55 > 0:11:57is once they've got the police behind them,

0:11:57 > 0:12:00they'll do everything they can to get rid of the evidence.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04The vehicle had managed to get a split second blind spot

0:12:04 > 0:12:07on the police vehicle and they've obviously disposed of the drugs.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Finding those drugs is key to their case.

0:12:10 > 0:12:14Luckily, PC Martin has located the bag...

0:12:14 > 0:12:16or at least, what's left of it.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19The bag of white powder's been thrown from the vehicle,

0:12:19 > 0:12:23which is just underneath a bridge. The bag has split.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26It looks like it's possibly ketamine or cocaine.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28We just need recovery of it.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30'The drugs had hit the back of the sign

0:12:30 > 0:12:34'and it had caught all in the bottom of the sign at the back.'

0:12:34 > 0:12:36It had had gone on the floor underneath,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39it had gone on the pavement, on the roadway.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42So you can imagine turning up to a job and thinking 'where do I start?'

0:12:42 > 0:12:44This was one of them.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47It's a good job it's not windy, isn't it?

0:12:47 > 0:12:49We'd have all had a face full of it!

0:12:49 > 0:12:53Immediately, we're thinking right, we need to preserve this, but how?

0:12:54 > 0:12:57- The other option is get a carrier bag from the...- Yeah.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01- Just to cover it up. If it rains we'll be... - Yeah, that's it all gone.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03There are no guidelines in the police manual

0:13:03 > 0:13:06on how to deal with a situation like this.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09So PC Martin has to do some improvising.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13If that's cocaine, that's quite a substantial amount of cocaine.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15You're looking at, you know, coming up to thousands,

0:13:15 > 0:13:18tens of thousands, potentially, in that.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20But until we get it examined, then we won't know.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23If they can keep the powder from blowing away,

0:13:23 > 0:13:26then the cops can build the case against the men.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29PC Toal is taking a closer look at the car.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31We know the drugs have been thrown out of the vehicle,

0:13:31 > 0:13:34but there's potentially more drugs hidden in the car. Or money.

0:13:34 > 0:13:38Or any evidence linking them to dealing drugs as well.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41So far, his search isn't proving fruitful.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45They've managed to dispose of absolutely everything.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48Up against the road sign there was nothing in the car.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51It was actually cleaner than my car!

0:13:51 > 0:13:55And that makes the recovery of the discarded package even more important.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57Have you got any clean brushes

0:13:57 > 0:14:00that you've got in your cupboard that we could use? No new ones?

0:14:00 > 0:14:04All right. I don't suppose... inside there,

0:14:04 > 0:14:07you've got access to any little brushes?

0:14:07 > 0:14:09Or anything like that?

0:14:09 > 0:14:12Even if it's in a shop and we have to pay for it.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Right.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18We may have to purchase some utensils to recover the drugs.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21If that's the way we have to do it, that's the way we have to do it.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25But just recovering the powder isn't enough.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29They also need to prove that the package was thrown out of the car.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31We want to secure, preserve

0:14:31 > 0:14:34and have everything on camera so that the case is watertight.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38But without an eyewitness or footage from the helicopter,

0:14:38 > 0:14:42it could be a challenge to make the charges against the men stick.

0:14:42 > 0:14:47The motorway cops have access to all sorts of high tech equipment.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50But it's often their experience on the road that gives them

0:14:50 > 0:14:53an eye for drivers on the wrong side of the law.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57It's mid-afternoon and PCs Jess Rojek and Alan Colman

0:14:57 > 0:15:00are just off the M6, near Chelmsley Wood.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04As they pull alongside a black Ford Focus, the driver seems nervous.

0:15:04 > 0:15:08We just wanted to stop the car, just to see who was driving it.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11Make sure that he had licence and insurance.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14The driver hasn't done anything wrong,

0:15:14 > 0:15:18but the cops' intuition tells them to check out the car just in case.

0:15:18 > 0:15:22Thank you, we're the A452 Collector Road.

0:15:22 > 0:15:27It's on Yankee 918 Whiskey Sierra Sierra. Received.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31- RADIO:- 'Thank you. No insurance.'

0:15:31 > 0:15:33That's all received, it will be a code one shortly.

0:15:33 > 0:15:37The vehicle in front, Ford Focus,

0:15:37 > 0:15:41has got no insurance shown on the Police National Computer.

0:15:41 > 0:15:46Just run a check on it, so we need to stop and have a word with him.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49'The area that we're in is known for car crime.'

0:15:49 > 0:15:53If we come off the motorway we'll go and have a look round there.

0:15:53 > 0:15:54I just didn't like the look of it.

0:15:54 > 0:15:58But before the cops have a chance to put on the blue lights,

0:15:58 > 0:16:01the driver unexpectedly makes the decision to pull over.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Oh, he's give up, he's give up.

0:16:06 > 0:16:11It's rare that someone gives up quite so quickly.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15- Hiya. You all right? What's your name?- John.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19All right, John. Your vehicle smells of cannabis a bit...

0:16:19 > 0:16:21You're showing no insurance.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26There is? Do you have a policy with you, or are you able to...

0:16:26 > 0:16:28OK. If I could just ask you to step out of the vehicle.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31We'll have a chat properly about it, all right?

0:16:31 > 0:16:35We were expecting that we might find that there would be no insurance

0:16:35 > 0:16:39or a small amount of drugs,

0:16:39 > 0:16:42but as it turned out, it unfolded into quite a story.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Is there anything in that car that shouldn't be there,

0:16:45 > 0:16:47- Have you got a bit of cannabis on you?- No, no, no.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51- Just dropped my mate off. - Have you had a... Your mate has?

0:16:51 > 0:16:53Just have a seat in there for me please.

0:16:55 > 0:16:59- Hello, mate.- Just going to do a quick search of the car.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02- Smells of cannabis.- Oh, right, OK.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05Your car's coming up with no insurance.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08No, it's in my missus' name, mate. It's fully insured.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11Is it? Where do you live, then?

0:17:11 > 0:17:15100%. I don't know who's she's with.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18- Have you got a phone number? - Of my missus?

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Because if you ain't got a policy, we're seizing it.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23It's not on the insurance database.

0:17:23 > 0:17:24He was basically telling us

0:17:24 > 0:17:28that his girlfriend had insurance on that car for him to drive

0:17:28 > 0:17:32or for any driver or some way, he thought he was insured on that car.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35There was no insurance on that car at all.

0:17:35 > 0:17:39Meanwhile, PC Rojek is taking a closer look inside.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42There's a strong smell of cannabis, so I'm, you know,

0:17:42 > 0:17:45looking for drugs. I've got the power to search the vehicle.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48And as I'm sort of going under the seats etc,

0:17:48 > 0:17:50that's when I find this weapon.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56Looks like a little adapted weapon to me.

0:17:56 > 0:18:00'He's obviously gone to the effort of wrapping the cling film round

0:18:00 > 0:18:01'to make it into a handle.'

0:18:01 > 0:18:03It's not what your normal person would have

0:18:03 > 0:18:05under their front passenger seat.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Where you been today? Been at work or something or..?

0:18:14 > 0:18:17The driver's keen to offer up a full explanation.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20And he's got something else to get off his chest.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25Yeah.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27And you're not?

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Right, OK, mate.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35She's knowing?

0:18:35 > 0:18:36She don't know?

0:18:38 > 0:18:41So where's she, then?

0:18:41 > 0:18:43He then decides to tell me that he's taken the car

0:18:43 > 0:18:45without her permission.

0:18:45 > 0:18:50So not only is he not insured, he's taken the vehicle without consent.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52The offences are stacking up.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56And now PC Rojek's back with the wooden baton she found in his car.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59- That was under the passenger seat. - What's that doing there, mate?

0:19:03 > 0:19:04Was you?

0:19:06 > 0:19:10It kind of looks like a little adapted bat, to me.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14And it's under your passenger seat.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20The man seems to have an answer for everything

0:19:20 > 0:19:22but it doesn't convince PC Rojek.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24So she's going to search the rest of the car.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27You got your keys on you? So I can check your boot?

0:19:27 > 0:19:30The cops sense something wasn't right from the start,

0:19:30 > 0:19:33and now the routine check is turning into something much bigger.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36The vehicle's on Aaron Way if you can start organising recovery.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40- Can you also get us a block for... - She's definitely insured on the car.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43..possessing of offensive weapon and TWOC.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48- You got anything on you, you shouldn't have?- No.

0:19:48 > 0:19:49You sure about that?

0:19:49 > 0:19:52We don't want any more surprises at the station.

0:19:54 > 0:19:55Right, OK.

0:19:55 > 0:20:00The driver insists there's no more surprises in store.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02But PC Colman has one for PC Rojek.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04- He's 'TWOCed' the car. - Oh, has he?- Yeah.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07- Oh. Whose car is it? - His girlfriend's.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10'TWOC-ing' is taking the car without consent.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12And he hasn't even passed his driving test.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15While they wait for the tow truck, the cops will have to make sure

0:20:15 > 0:20:19this driver doesn't have anything else up his sleeve.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25Over on the M5, at Frankley Services, PC Martin is still trying

0:20:25 > 0:20:29to preserve a quantity of white powder, thought to be drugs,

0:20:29 > 0:20:32thrown by two men from a car before they're arrested.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36And he's finally managed to blag a useful tool to gather the powder.

0:20:36 > 0:20:37A small nail brush.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40Have you seen on the other side of there, mate?

0:20:40 > 0:20:43Just come round a bit further. It's all in there where he's hit the side.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46- So...- That's what they've intended to do, ain't they?- Yeah.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50- Lob it and smash it. - Split the bag and it goes everywhere.- It's all down there.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52With so much white powder around,

0:20:52 > 0:20:55the cops decide it's time to call in the specialists.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58We thought 'No, instead of me

0:20:58 > 0:21:01'scraping all the drugs up with a pink nail brush, I think

0:21:01 > 0:21:05'we better get professional people to do it and do a proper job.'

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Right, West Mids SOCO, potentially coming.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11- Right.- And a drugs dog's on his way.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13So I'm not going to get to use my brush?

0:21:13 > 0:21:17As they wait for the scenes of crime officer to help recover the powder,

0:21:17 > 0:21:19PC Chris Bradley brings some good news.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21A witness saw a package hit the sign.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23He's a good witness. It's a good statement.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26He can't say who's thrown it or who the drivers are.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28But he can say it wasn't there before.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30The lads will put that into perspective.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Just spoke to a witness who's working out the back,

0:21:33 > 0:21:36hears some noise, sees a car come past,

0:21:36 > 0:21:39sees something being thrown out of it.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41Sees police presence

0:21:41 > 0:21:44and whatnot going round the side of the petrol station

0:21:44 > 0:21:47and then he sees some kind of powder, like snow,

0:21:47 > 0:21:49just all over the place. And the sign still shaking.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52So I've just been and taken a statement off him for that.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55And then see how it goes from there.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57It's good evidence.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59But because the witness can't identify the car,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02it's not conclusive. And there's more good news.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05The specialist scenes of crimes officer arrives,

0:22:05 > 0:22:08much to the relief of PC Martin.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11Obviously got all this just hiding it. So that's the bag of drugs.

0:22:11 > 0:22:15So basically, we just need it recovered as best as we can.

0:22:15 > 0:22:19But we didn't know how the best way was going to be to get all this...

0:22:19 > 0:22:20the powder back from here.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26Collecting the powder from the stony ground

0:22:26 > 0:22:28is also a first for the expert.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31This sort of thing... Well, it's never happened.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34We find drugs, of course, and we recover drugs a lot.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36But not on this sort of surface.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41And PC Martin's nail brush comes in useful after all.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44It's worked out at being one of the best tools.

0:22:44 > 0:22:46Even the SOCO guys even said this is a great tool.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49So I think he'll be getting one in his bag from now on.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51There's more good news for the cops.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54The crucial moments as the men threw the bag out of the car

0:22:54 > 0:22:56have been caught on CCTV.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59You see it just over there, just as that lorry's coming up,

0:22:59 > 0:23:03there's a camera pointing up. Just by that bridge.

0:23:03 > 0:23:07The camera picks up the car as it heads through the underpass.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09The passenger door opens and the bag flies out,

0:23:09 > 0:23:12showering the road sign with powder.

0:23:12 > 0:23:13It's all come together.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16We've seized the drugs, we've got two people in custody,

0:23:16 > 0:23:20we've got camera footage of it. And an eyewitness.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24It doesn't really get much better than that, as far as a job goes.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27It's almost like already done and dusted, you could say.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30All that's left for PCs Toal and Martin to do

0:23:30 > 0:23:33is to wash away the last traces of the powder.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36We didn't want people lined up on the streets trying

0:23:36 > 0:23:37to collect white powder.

0:23:37 > 0:23:42So we had to make sure that we cleaned the scene as best we could.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46I think John did a good job, to be fair, he was a good scrubber.

0:23:48 > 0:23:49Job done.

0:23:53 > 0:23:5620 miles away in Chelmsley Wood, PCs Colman and Rojek

0:23:56 > 0:23:58are also cleaning up.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01They're about to seize the car with no insurance, driven by a man

0:24:01 > 0:24:05with no licence, who took the car without telling his girlfriend.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08But he's got news for the cops. He claims he's turned over a new leaf.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11What have you been with in trouble before?

0:24:12 > 0:24:14Yeah, what was that for, last time?

0:24:17 > 0:24:18OK.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21'For someone who said he was going straight,

0:24:21 > 0:24:23'he was in a car that he shouldn't have, for a start.'

0:24:23 > 0:24:27He'd got no licence to drive the car, clearly got no insurance.

0:24:27 > 0:24:33And a home-made baseball bat tucked under the seat so...

0:24:33 > 0:24:35he wasn't really going that straight to me.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39And at Chelmsley Wood Police Station, PC Colman

0:24:39 > 0:24:41begins searching the driver.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43I said, 'have you anything else on you?'

0:24:43 > 0:24:45Once again, he has an excuse.

0:24:48 > 0:24:49Just popped out his trousers.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53You're under arrest on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55- Anything else?- No, mate.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58I asked him, 'Have you got anything?' He said, 'No.'

0:24:58 > 0:25:01We get to the station. Surprise, surprise, he's got cannabis on him.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04As he'd lied to us, we don't know if he's got it stashed anywhere else.

0:25:04 > 0:25:08So PC Colman has the unenviable task of strip searching him.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12Lovely. Do love looking at hairy arses(!)

0:25:12 > 0:25:14A horrible thing to do.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16'Doing a strip search of a male,'

0:25:16 > 0:25:20got to inspect areas that you don't really want to be looking up.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23But it's a part of the job you've got to do.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25But we have found some strange things up there.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28This time, there are no strange things to find,

0:25:28 > 0:25:30and so he's taken to the cells

0:25:30 > 0:25:34while the cops turn their attention to the wooden pole they found in his car.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38It looks like a curtain pole, to me, by the thickness of it.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40So that would be on the window.

0:25:40 > 0:25:45Slide your curtains nice, but he's sawed the ends off it.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47That's where the little thing goes on the end, isn't it?

0:25:47 > 0:25:49Give someone a real good whack with that.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52We can't go letting everyone walk around the streets

0:25:52 > 0:25:54with weapons that they've home-made.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57Because there would be absolute chaos.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01It's not there for a joke or for show.

0:26:01 > 0:26:06As far as I'm concerned, that's been made for a purpose.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09Whether that be self-defence or something more sinister,

0:26:09 > 0:26:12but at the end of the day, you can't take the law into your own hands.

0:26:14 > 0:26:18It's 9pm. And 40 miles away, on the M5, motorway cops Adam Toal

0:26:18 > 0:26:22and John Martin are back out on patrol.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24They've just received a call about another car

0:26:24 > 0:26:27thought to be involved in drug dealing.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30Yeah, OK, Pete, there's a good chance it will come off at five.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33That's where we think it came off yesterday.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36The Mercedes is back again.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38- Which one was that, the blue one? - The drugs from Ludlow.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42They've been trying to track down the car for the past few days,

0:26:42 > 0:26:45and it's just been seen travelling in their direction.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48There's a good chance he's probably going to come off at five.

0:26:48 > 0:26:52Going back through towards Ludlow, that way.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55So we're going to just make towards five, mate.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57Information's come as A1.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00The intelligence suggests the car is being used by someone

0:27:00 > 0:27:03selling drugs to migrant workers in the Ludlow area.

0:27:03 > 0:27:07The information that we'd had was good information.

0:27:07 > 0:27:12It had come from the local area and potentially this information

0:27:12 > 0:27:18was going to lead us to, potentially, some quantity of drugs.

0:27:18 > 0:27:22Yes, Steve, just to let you know, we're off at five, mate.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26I'll be assuming you'll probably pick it up before we do.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29If it does come off at five, let us know and we'll obviously

0:27:29 > 0:27:32go for a stop at the bottom of the slip road if you want to.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34Before anything happens.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38With another patrol following some distance behind the target car,

0:27:38 > 0:27:41PCs Toal and Martin take up position near the motorway exit

0:27:41 > 0:27:43they believe the car will take.

0:27:43 > 0:27:47I was thinking like waiting here, but in this little thing here.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49We'll just block the slip road.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52Just block it in, he's got nowhere to go then.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55They're behind it. He's got no chance of ditching then, has it?

0:27:55 > 0:28:00We tend to, especially with drugs, try to stop them fairly quickly.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02Timing will be everything.

0:28:02 > 0:28:06But PC Toal can't close the slip road's inside lane

0:28:06 > 0:28:09until he knows the car is definitely coming off the motorway.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11- RADIO:- 'We're approaching the half mile board

0:28:11 > 0:28:13'and vehicle's moving to lane one.'

0:28:13 > 0:28:17The cops following the target car update them as they get nearer.

0:28:17 > 0:28:21300 and 200 marker. 100, still no indication.

0:28:21 > 0:28:23No indication.

0:28:23 > 0:28:29- Standard five.- Yeah, he's indicating left and it's off off at five.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32Now they know it's coming off, the cops get into position.

0:28:32 > 0:28:37Two three, yeah we've got the slip road closed at the moment for you.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40We don't mess around, we don't have time to mess around

0:28:40 > 0:28:43because you've got traffic even on the slip roads at high speeds

0:28:43 > 0:28:47and, obviously, you've got the main roads off the slip road as well.

0:28:47 > 0:28:50Just open the door for us.

0:28:50 > 0:28:54Lovely. Would you step out the vehicle a second for us, mate?

0:28:54 > 0:28:56The cops need to split up the three men in the car,

0:28:56 > 0:28:59so PC Toal deals with the driver.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02Come and have a seat with us in there for a second.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05He'll be questioned by PC Martin, and the car will be searched

0:29:05 > 0:29:08after the two passengers are put in separate cars.

0:29:08 > 0:29:10All right, mate, just come with us.

0:29:10 > 0:29:12I'll explain what's going on in a sec, all right.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15- I no speak English. - No speak English.

0:29:15 > 0:29:19We've got three detained, we'll move the vehicle off, get it out the way.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21Once you've got these people separated,

0:29:21 > 0:29:26you can see that at least a couple of them are quite edgy.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29They seem quite nervous as if they've got something to hide.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33So I'm quite keen to get that vehicle searched and obviously see

0:29:33 > 0:29:35if we can find what we're looking for.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42Have you got anything on you that you shouldn't have, fella?

0:29:42 > 0:29:45Yeah, just in our vehicle at the moment. Just off the slip road there.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48Just by McDonalds at junction five.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52- Right. Have you got any ID on you? - Yeah, in my car.- In your car.

0:29:52 > 0:29:55- Is it in your wallet, is it? - Can I pinch your torch, please?

0:29:55 > 0:29:58- Yeah. In the console, yeah? - I'll go and get that for you.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00PC Toal makes a quick check of the car

0:30:00 > 0:30:04and discovers something more interesting than the man's licence.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07Can you just let him know, mate... You've got it?

0:30:07 > 0:30:11The car smells of cannabis, and his mate, so we're doing a search.

0:30:11 > 0:30:15Oh, right. Right, your car smells of cannabis, you heard that?

0:30:15 > 0:30:22We're going to do the necessary and search the vehicle and double check if there's anything in it.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25If there are drugs in the car, a thorough search will soon reveal

0:30:25 > 0:30:28whether the cops' A1 information will pay off.

0:30:31 > 0:30:36Over on the M6, PCs Al Colman and Jess Rojek are receiving a call

0:30:36 > 0:30:40about a stolen car that's been spotted in Birmingham city centre.

0:30:40 > 0:30:45'A red Volkswagen Golf. X-ray 838 Kilo November Tango.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48'Stolen with keys.'

0:30:50 > 0:30:56There's a stolen red VW Golf that's gone into city.

0:30:56 > 0:30:59Stolen with keys from the Mosley area.

0:30:59 > 0:31:03So we're literally four minutes away.

0:31:03 > 0:31:10Stolen with keys may mean the owner is a victim of a car key burglary, an increasing problem.

0:31:10 > 0:31:13Thieves target houses with expensive motors outside,

0:31:13 > 0:31:16then break in to get the keys and steal the cars.

0:31:16 > 0:31:18That's the second biggest thing you buy,

0:31:18 > 0:31:21apart from your house or your mortgage, is your car.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24Some people spend thousands of pounds on their car

0:31:24 > 0:31:28and then these little gits break into your house and steal them

0:31:28 > 0:31:31and drive them like a go-kart.

0:31:31 > 0:31:36Got another one of our motorway colleagues who's actually in the area where it's been last sighted.

0:31:36 > 0:31:39Who says there's no trace at the moment,

0:31:39 > 0:31:43so we're going an alternative route, to see if it's gone a different way.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46It's got to be about somewhere, ain't it?

0:31:46 > 0:31:49It's only stolen bloody two days ago.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52- 'Tango zero one five, priority.' - He's got it.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54The other patrol get behind the stolen car.

0:31:54 > 0:32:00It's nearby, but PCs Colman and Rojek need an exact location so they can help intercept it.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04Yeah, were are you, Paul?

0:32:04 > 0:32:09'Just coming back onto Constitution Hill, 66, did a u-turn.'

0:32:09 > 0:32:11'OK, he's going into city.'

0:32:11 > 0:32:16Got a unit now behind the vehicle.

0:32:16 > 0:32:20Literally round the corner. I'd expect it to fail to stop,

0:32:20 > 0:32:22but it hasn't as yet, it's failed to stop.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26'Vehicle failed to stop. Tango sierra one five, you're lead vehicle.'

0:32:26 > 0:32:30'Yeah, it's right, right, I'll give you a road name in a moment.

0:32:30 > 0:32:34'Road conditions dry. No other vehicles on the road.'

0:32:34 > 0:32:38- Say right, did they? - 'Speed, five zero miles an hour.'

0:32:41 > 0:32:45'Seven six, stinger and that's authorised. Charlie six, go.'

0:32:45 > 0:32:50As they race to catch the pursuit, the stolen car keeps switching direction.

0:32:50 > 0:32:54- 'Left, left onto...'- Unit Street.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57'Into Hospital Street.'

0:32:57 > 0:33:00Oh, no, no, no, no! It's up here, it's up here, it's up here.

0:33:00 > 0:33:04- 'Back on Constitution Hill. Left, left.'- They almost went behind us.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07The car's heading straight for PCs Colman and Rojek

0:33:07 > 0:33:10who are in an ideal position to help their colleagues out

0:33:10 > 0:33:13by setting up a stinger to puncture its tyres.

0:33:13 > 0:33:15- Coming this way, yeah? - Yeah.

0:33:19 > 0:33:21My radio's gone.

0:33:21 > 0:33:24But yet again the stolen car changes direction.

0:33:24 > 0:33:28- Where's the stinger? - He's turned, he's turned. - He's turned right.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32I thought it was going to be my first stinger deployment.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35It was all perfectly placed. But that's just one of those things.

0:33:35 > 0:33:39And yet again, PCs Rojek and Colman have to rejoin the chase.

0:33:39 > 0:33:45- Nearly had 'em, Jess.- Once again all they have to go on are the radio updates from the pursuing cars.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48'We've now gone right, right Lancaster Street. Against traffic.'

0:33:48 > 0:33:51'There is no other vehicles on the road.'

0:33:51 > 0:33:53It's going to get abandoned in a minute.

0:33:53 > 0:33:57'...one vehicle come towards us, he has seen us in plenty of time.'

0:33:57 > 0:34:00The cops know that if the pursuit gets too dangerous,

0:34:00 > 0:34:03senior officers are likely to call it off.

0:34:03 > 0:34:08'No, the wrong way round Lancaster Circus Queensway.'

0:34:08 > 0:34:13Now the driver of the stolen car is heading the wrong way down a major road.

0:34:13 > 0:34:18Every pursuit that goes on, will be monitored by an inspector.

0:34:18 > 0:34:23If he deems it to be unsafe, he will step in and call that pursuit off.

0:34:23 > 0:34:26'He's now turned right back onto the correct side of the road.'

0:34:26 > 0:34:31'No other vehicles being inconvenienced.'

0:34:31 > 0:34:35'Yankee Mike, Yankee Mike, Tango Charlie six, six stop and abandon.'

0:34:35 > 0:34:40As they predicted, the inspector in the control room has called off the pursuit.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43Much to the motorway cops' frustration.

0:34:43 > 0:34:46- There's nothing on the road.- Eh?

0:34:46 > 0:34:50There's nothing on the road for it to be... do you know what I mean?

0:34:50 > 0:34:51The force control room inspector

0:34:51 > 0:34:55decided on that occasion that the pursuit should be abandoned.

0:34:55 > 0:34:59Whether you agree with that decision on that night

0:34:59 > 0:35:02doesn't really come into it, because what they say, goes.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04For now, the ground pursuit has been abandoned.

0:35:04 > 0:35:08But the car thief's not home free, because the cops have another plan.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11The police helicopter is on its way.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15They can see what pedestrians are about, what traffic's about,

0:35:15 > 0:35:18what's round the corner they can sort of see things that you can't see.

0:35:18 > 0:35:23So if you have got that air support, that can change the goalposts.

0:35:23 > 0:35:27The motorway cops know the stolen car is in the area, but they don't know exactly where.

0:35:27 > 0:35:32And the fear is it may disappear before the chopper arrives on scene.

0:35:34 > 0:35:40On the north side of Birmingham, PC Martin Smith is also on the trail of a vehicle that may be stolen.

0:35:40 > 0:35:44We have a motor that's been involved in a burglary in Stourbridge.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47It's a black Ford Focus on a 10 plate.

0:35:47 > 0:35:51The vehicle's registered to Kingstanding, but I don't suspect it's a legitimate vehicle.

0:35:51 > 0:35:54It's unusual for burglars to use their own car.

0:35:54 > 0:35:57The chances of detection are just too high.

0:35:57 > 0:35:59You'd at least nick one if you're going to do a burglary.

0:35:59 > 0:36:03Any burglar with a degree of competence

0:36:03 > 0:36:07is not going to use his own car. Absolutely not.

0:36:07 > 0:36:11The owner of the Focus may not yet realise his car's been stolen.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14PC Smith decides to test his theory and pay him a visit.

0:36:14 > 0:36:17I'm going to have a nose up there to the keeper's address.

0:36:17 > 0:36:21We're about a mile and a half away on the sat nav from the address,

0:36:21 > 0:36:24but this is sort of the edge of Kingstanding coming up.

0:36:24 > 0:36:28If the car isn't there, he'll have bad news for the owner.

0:36:28 > 0:36:35So we'll soon find out. This is the... this is the road.

0:36:35 > 0:36:39I didn't really expect it to be there. Or if I did, I expected it to be...

0:36:39 > 0:36:43If I saw it, I expected it to be on the driveway, parked up, secure and nice and cold.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48But, strangely, the black Focus is on the driveway

0:36:48 > 0:36:52and its steamy windows are ringing alarm bells.

0:36:52 > 0:36:56So he decides to check if the car's been used before speaking to the owner.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58It's hot.

0:36:58 > 0:37:02This puts paid to his theory the car was stolen.

0:37:07 > 0:37:10Yeah, it's very warm.

0:37:10 > 0:37:12Mmm. Could be a plan of attack for this.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15Now the suspicion falls on the owner of the motor.

0:37:15 > 0:37:20PC Smith decides to tuck the police car out of sight, while he thinks of a new plan.

0:37:20 > 0:37:25Could it be that they've used their own car to break into something?

0:37:25 > 0:37:28It was quite a surprise to see that we'd got a car

0:37:28 > 0:37:32that was red hot and clearly had recently been used.

0:37:32 > 0:37:34The car's been used for a reasonably extended period.

0:37:34 > 0:37:38And we're talking longer than just a couple of minutes down the road

0:37:38 > 0:37:40to the chippie and back again.

0:37:40 > 0:37:42But that's all we've got at the moment.

0:37:42 > 0:37:47In the absence of anything at the other end, where the actual offence has been committed.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50He calls for more details on the burglary.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53The burglar was quite brazen. He was standing by his car

0:37:53 > 0:37:56whilst somebody else was committing the offence in the house.

0:37:56 > 0:38:01The owner has returned and at that point, the car,

0:38:01 > 0:38:03at some stage, has made a getaway.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06Nine six, can I cut in?

0:38:06 > 0:38:10I think there's a bit of movement outside the address for the Focus, but stand by.

0:38:12 > 0:38:15Somebody came out, stood by the Focus and disappeared again.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17I'm not sure whether they're in it or not.

0:38:17 > 0:38:20PC Smith now has to keep tabs on the owner of the car

0:38:20 > 0:38:23while he waits for back-up to arrive.

0:38:25 > 0:38:28Near Droitwitch, PC Toal is searching a car

0:38:28 > 0:38:31he suspects is being used to transport drugs.

0:38:31 > 0:38:37Got some peanuts, mate. And some cake rusk, whatever that is.

0:38:37 > 0:38:40Meanwhile, PC Martin is talking to the driver.

0:38:40 > 0:38:45What have you got in the car that you shouldn't have?

0:38:45 > 0:38:49- Nothing.- All right, I could see you started to shake.

0:38:49 > 0:38:51We're looking in that car solely for drugs at this time,

0:38:51 > 0:38:53or anything linking it to drugs.

0:38:53 > 0:38:59So drug paraphernalia, anything for possession with intent to supply.

0:38:59 > 0:39:03When I've opened the boot, they've obviously been to the wholesalers.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06It's just a mass of fruit and veg.

0:39:06 > 0:39:09- Now don't insult my intelligence, all right.- Sorry?

0:39:09 > 0:39:13Don't insult me, I know what's in there.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19Maybe a joint of one of my friends.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22Is there cannabis in there then, is there?

0:39:22 > 0:39:24There's something in this car, mate.

0:39:24 > 0:39:27There's got to be something in this car.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30And it turns out there is. Not just fruit and veg,

0:39:30 > 0:39:32but a bag of herb too.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39OK, a little bit more my colleague's just found in there.

0:39:39 > 0:39:42We've got cannabis bush as well.

0:39:42 > 0:39:46And PC Toal has found something else.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49Oh! What are those then?

0:39:49 > 0:39:55I don't know if you can see, there's a little mushroom design on there.

0:39:55 > 0:40:00Which would suggest that these are probably amphet tablets,

0:40:00 > 0:40:02ecstasy, something like that.

0:40:02 > 0:40:06So we've got a quantity there of class A drug at the moment.

0:40:08 > 0:40:12Oh, some scales there mate. Got some digital scales.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14I don't know if you can see, there's some white powder.

0:40:14 > 0:40:19Some white residue. And there's loads of it all down the sides here.

0:40:19 > 0:40:23Which would suggest that this has been used to weigh narcotics out,

0:40:23 > 0:40:26possibly cocaine or amphetamine.

0:40:26 > 0:40:31We've got enough there to take them in at least to do drugs searches.

0:40:31 > 0:40:34You don't have scales for your own personal use,

0:40:34 > 0:40:35you have those to weigh out,

0:40:35 > 0:40:37to distribute to people you're selling to.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40So we'll just dig a bit deeper with the vehicle

0:40:40 > 0:40:43and see what else we come up trumps with, maybe.

0:40:46 > 0:40:50Oh, lovely. Possibly cocaine. Or amphet again.

0:40:50 > 0:40:52Inside somebody's wallet.

0:40:52 > 0:40:56And I think it's damn decent of the person that's got it as well

0:40:56 > 0:40:57to even leave us his ID card.

0:40:57 > 0:41:02So... very difficult, really, isn't it, to get out of that one.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05The find just keeps getting better at the moment.

0:41:05 > 0:41:10It's time to confront the driver with what he's found inside his car.

0:41:10 > 0:41:14- All right. Those are the driving docs I found.- Yeah.

0:41:14 > 0:41:16- Do you speak English? - He's very good, we're having a chat.

0:41:16 > 0:41:21- Amphet, cocaine, and cannabis. - Right.- That's what we got.

0:41:21 > 0:41:25- And scales as well.- Right, so we're doing all three of them, then?- Yeah.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28Right. OK.

0:41:28 > 0:41:32Found something in your car that you shouldn't really have.

0:41:32 > 0:41:34- In the car?- Yes.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37- I think you know they're in there. - No, I didn't know.

0:41:37 > 0:41:41Even though the driver insists the drugs in the car are nothing to do with him,

0:41:41 > 0:41:44the cops suspect there's more to this.

0:41:44 > 0:41:48They'll be taking all three men to Worcester Police Station to try and discover the full story.

0:41:50 > 0:41:54Back in Birmingham city centre, PCs Colman and Rojek are still hoping

0:41:54 > 0:41:59to catch the stolen Golf which got away from the police when the chase was abandoned.

0:41:59 > 0:42:02Ground units and Alpha Oscar one, the police helicopter,

0:42:02 > 0:42:05are now scouring the streets for any sign of the car.

0:42:05 > 0:42:10- Have we lost sight of this vehicle? - Yeah, it's disappeared now, innit?

0:42:10 > 0:42:12Just as PC Rojek packs away the stinger,

0:42:12 > 0:42:16the helicopter observer spots a likely vehicle.

0:42:16 > 0:42:21'We've got a possible here. Could we have a vehicle to Stratford Road, junction of College Road, over?'

0:42:21 > 0:42:24It's going towards the A3. Where it was stolen from.

0:42:24 > 0:42:30It is good news, when it's back on and you're back raring to go again.

0:42:30 > 0:42:35As they race to reach the car, it seems the driver isn't sure which way to turn.

0:42:35 > 0:42:39'He's gone round this roundabout twice now. Stand by, one.'

0:42:39 > 0:42:41But hanging around here may not be such a wise move

0:42:41 > 0:42:45because this is a part of town PC Rojek knows well.

0:42:45 > 0:42:48The good thing is I know this area like the back of my hand.

0:42:48 > 0:42:53Because it was floating around my old patch where I worked before motorway,

0:42:53 > 0:42:55I could anticipate where it was going to go next.

0:42:55 > 0:43:00I knew exactly what roads it was going to turn into and what route it was likely to take.

0:43:00 > 0:43:02Yeah, I was quite excited about that.

0:43:02 > 0:43:06With the helicopter above, they can follow the car's every move.

0:43:06 > 0:43:09As it heads back into town, the cops are waiting.

0:43:09 > 0:43:13'OK, Stratford Road, high speed. Back towards the city.'

0:43:13 > 0:43:16But as they deploy a stinger strip to puncture the car's tyres,

0:43:16 > 0:43:17the driver puts the brakes on.

0:43:17 > 0:43:20Just in time.

0:43:20 > 0:43:23As he hits reverse, another car tries to block him.

0:43:23 > 0:43:25But he's too quick.

0:43:25 > 0:43:28'Stratford Road, vehicle's reversing turning round,

0:43:28 > 0:43:32'probably get on the downlink, and he's Stratford Road out of city.'

0:43:32 > 0:43:35And he's heading straight towards PC Colman's Range Rover.

0:43:35 > 0:43:38Out of city again, so it's coming towards us.

0:43:38 > 0:43:41Just ahead of them, the stolen car darts into a side street.

0:43:41 > 0:43:47'He's gone right, right into... Griswold Road.'

0:43:47 > 0:43:50PC Colman quickly joins the pursuit.

0:43:50 > 0:43:55We're in a Range Rover. Quite a large vehicle, very powerful vehicle, very capable vehicle,

0:43:55 > 0:43:59but its handling capabilities differ greatly to a car.

0:43:59 > 0:44:02So it's quite big to chuck around the streets.

0:44:02 > 0:44:08'Three zero miles an hour. We're coming up to the junction.'

0:44:08 > 0:44:09PC Rojek knows these streets,

0:44:09 > 0:44:13and she thinks she knows where the driver is headed, too.

0:44:13 > 0:44:18He's going towards Moseley. We could loop back round.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21- Where's second vehicle? - He's going to go back towards city.

0:44:21 > 0:44:26'Speed, four zero miles an hour. No other vehicles on the road.'

0:44:26 > 0:44:31There's three police cars behind him.

0:44:31 > 0:44:34There's every chance he's just going to do one out the car.

0:44:34 > 0:44:37If the driver decides to do one and ditch the car,

0:44:37 > 0:44:38he'll have to be quick,

0:44:38 > 0:44:42because the cops have blocked the road and set up a second stinger.

0:44:42 > 0:44:47I could see up ahead that there was another officer ready to try and sting the vehicle.

0:44:47 > 0:44:49He clearly knew what was coming.

0:44:49 > 0:44:53Rather than bail out, the driver sees another option. And takes it.

0:44:53 > 0:44:58- He's going off road! - But he wasn't counting on PC Colman's Range Rover.

0:44:58 > 0:45:02Big tyres, four wheel drive. We zipped up and were right behind him.

0:45:02 > 0:45:06As the car goes off road, the Range Rover finally comes into its own.

0:45:06 > 0:45:09That's us, that's us, Jess.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11And so does PC Jess Rojek.

0:45:11 > 0:45:14It's her first pursuit, but she's got local knowledge.

0:45:14 > 0:45:19Oscar Tango two two, we are now lead vehicle, we are Borstal Heath Road.

0:45:19 > 0:45:22At this point we're now the lead vehicle.

0:45:22 > 0:45:27So I'm thinking, this is great. Can do commentary for the first time.

0:45:27 > 0:45:31And so I take over the commentary.

0:45:31 > 0:45:36It was on my old patch, I knew every single road, every single turning.

0:45:36 > 0:45:39And I could anticipate exactly where he was going.

0:45:39 > 0:45:41It's a continuation onto Balsam Heath Road.

0:45:41 > 0:45:43She remained calm, she didn't get excited.

0:45:43 > 0:45:47That's one of the things that can sort of tell the control room

0:45:47 > 0:45:48maybe we ought to call this off,

0:45:48 > 0:45:51the officer's too excited. It might be dangerous.

0:45:51 > 0:45:54Road conditions empty, there are no other vehicles,

0:45:54 > 0:45:56It's appropriate to continue at this time.

0:45:56 > 0:45:59Is Alpha Oscar One going to take commentary or will I continue?

0:45:59 > 0:46:01It's a right, right. Right, right.

0:46:01 > 0:46:05- IC3 male. - 'Check your mike, Alpha Oscar One.'

0:46:05 > 0:46:08'Go on, take the commentary please.'

0:46:08 > 0:46:10'Thank you, I will take the commentary on this pursuit,

0:46:10 > 0:46:13'unless I need the traffic car to do so.'

0:46:13 > 0:46:18Unfortunately, the air support wanted to take over the commentary.

0:46:18 > 0:46:22So I had to give that up after a few seconds,

0:46:22 > 0:46:23which did annoy me,

0:46:23 > 0:46:27because I really did know exactly where he was going.

0:46:27 > 0:46:31With the helicopter tracking the stolen car from above,

0:46:31 > 0:46:36the cops can take some time to regroup and come up with a plan to stop the car.

0:46:36 > 0:46:41Nine miles away in Kingstanding, PC Smith is also hatching a plan.

0:46:41 > 0:46:45He's called in extra patrols to confront the owner of a car

0:46:45 > 0:46:48that was seen at a burglary earlier in the evening.

0:46:48 > 0:46:51I can just see the headlights of the police car,

0:46:51 > 0:46:54they're just showing round the corner.

0:46:54 > 0:46:59At the first patrol car arrives, PC Smith gets an update on the burglary.

0:46:59 > 0:47:05'Yes, from Delta Yankee. They found a pair of gloves.'

0:47:05 > 0:47:10It seems the point of the break in was to steal the keys of a high performance car.

0:47:10 > 0:47:17What's known to be nicked so far is some jewellery, some house keys and a BMW car key.

0:47:17 > 0:47:21So potentially they'd have been looking at going back for the car at some stage.

0:47:21 > 0:47:26They've a left pair of gloves and a screwdriver on the bed in one of the bedrooms,

0:47:26 > 0:47:29so we've got a definite break in, we've got definite offences.

0:47:29 > 0:47:33Knock the door and see what they've got to say about their car being seen out there.

0:47:35 > 0:47:40With the arrival of more officers, PC Smith is ready to go in.

0:47:40 > 0:47:43OK, our support's here, so we're going in.

0:47:43 > 0:47:45The house is surrounded,

0:47:45 > 0:47:48but the cops think the suspect may be looking for a way out.

0:47:49 > 0:47:54It's somebody at the window, but they disappeared back inside quickly.

0:47:54 > 0:47:56He's a dark haired kid that came out.

0:48:00 > 0:48:02Police, open the door!

0:48:02 > 0:48:04When that goes on you're thinking,

0:48:04 > 0:48:06is he hiding evidence, what's he doing?

0:48:06 > 0:48:11Is he moving stuff around the house that he doesn't want us to find?

0:48:11 > 0:48:14- Hello, mate. Do you mind if we come and speak to you.- No.

0:48:14 > 0:48:16Can we have a chat with you? Brilliant.

0:48:16 > 0:48:18There's been a burglary in Stourbridge.

0:48:18 > 0:48:21Your car was seen at the scene and to leave the scene.

0:48:21 > 0:48:23- OK. Have you been anywhere tonight? - No.

0:48:23 > 0:48:28When was the last time you went out in the car?

0:48:28 > 0:48:31- Earlier today. - Who else has been in the car?

0:48:31 > 0:48:34- My partner. - When? When and where?- Today.

0:48:34 > 0:48:36- What time?- Hours ago.

0:48:36 > 0:48:40Hours. OK mate, well I've been outside for half an hour, the car's hot.

0:48:40 > 0:48:44- The exhaust, the wheels and the brake discs are hot. - It's clearly been used.

0:48:44 > 0:48:49It's been used for an extended period. I believe you may have been involved in the burglary.

0:48:49 > 0:48:51You can't account for the car being there, can you?

0:48:51 > 0:48:55You say it hasn't been used for hours. I'm saying it's been used recently.

0:48:55 > 0:49:00So your suspicions are there and they're heightened straight away.

0:49:00 > 0:49:04You think this chap's probably lying and he's lying because he's burgled the place.

0:49:04 > 0:49:06You're under arrest on suspicion of burglary.

0:49:06 > 0:49:11You didn't account for what I've told you about your car being there and being hot.

0:49:11 > 0:49:17You said it ain't been used for hours, that's impossible. I couldn't hold the exhaust a minute ago. OK?

0:49:17 > 0:49:20- While we're here, we'll be... - I did pop out earlier.

0:49:20 > 0:49:24No, you didn't say that, mate. You had opportunity, OK.

0:49:24 > 0:49:28- I haven't been out in the car, but I just flew round the corner. - No, mate.

0:49:28 > 0:49:32Because the man's story doesn't add up, the cops have grounds to search his car

0:49:32 > 0:49:35for anything that may link him to the burglary.

0:49:35 > 0:49:40- Yeah, we've got several gloves here and singular ones. - There's got to be stripes on it.

0:49:40 > 0:49:42We've got one glove on its own,

0:49:42 > 0:49:46it's like a woollen glove with two grey stripes across the top.

0:49:46 > 0:49:49Well, if he's wore them, there'll be DNA in them, won't there?

0:49:49 > 0:49:51It's unusual we've got so many gloves.

0:49:51 > 0:49:54He came to the window, looked, and darted back into the house.

0:49:54 > 0:49:58So there was something. He may have stashed it, Even inside the settee.

0:49:58 > 0:50:02Even though the cops find nothing that directly incriminates the man,

0:50:02 > 0:50:05there's evidence to bring him in for questioning.

0:50:05 > 0:50:08- But he's not playing ball.- What, no you've got to co...- No fucking way.

0:50:08 > 0:50:11You know what I'm about to do? Fuck his head in.

0:50:11 > 0:50:15Eventually, the man calms down enough to let the cops take him in.

0:50:15 > 0:50:19There was specific intelligence about that individual to link him

0:50:19 > 0:50:23to an on-going burglary initiative in that area.

0:50:23 > 0:50:26So two and two's equalling six quite quickly with this guy.

0:50:26 > 0:50:30And without a good explanation there's only one place he was going -

0:50:30 > 0:50:33straight to the police station under arrest.

0:50:33 > 0:50:37Over in Birmingham City Centre, PCs Colman and Rojek

0:50:37 > 0:50:39are also hoping to make an arrest.

0:50:39 > 0:50:41The cops have been co-ordinating a plan to stop

0:50:41 > 0:50:43the driver of the stolen Golf.

0:50:43 > 0:50:46The car's being tracked by the police chopper

0:50:46 > 0:50:48and, once again, a stinger unit is in position.

0:50:48 > 0:50:50With the road to the right blocked,

0:50:50 > 0:50:52the driver heads straight over the stinger.

0:50:55 > 0:50:57It's third time lucky for the cops.

0:50:57 > 0:51:02It has been stung, he's got two near side deflations, by the looks of it.

0:51:03 > 0:51:05No, he hasn't. Has it? Yeah, it has.

0:51:05 > 0:51:07Definitely got a deflation front near side.

0:51:07 > 0:51:11With two tyres out of action, the driver can't outrun the cops.

0:51:11 > 0:51:13But he still refuses to give up,

0:51:13 > 0:51:17even though the pursuit is now slowing down to a crawl.

0:51:17 > 0:51:20It's like something out of a Carry On film.

0:51:20 > 0:51:21I'm getting a headache.

0:51:21 > 0:51:25I thought any minute now he's just going to come to a halt

0:51:25 > 0:51:28and we're just going to see him boot it out of the door.

0:51:28 > 0:51:31I just want to him to just get out and run

0:51:31 > 0:51:33and just have done with it, so I can chase him.

0:51:33 > 0:51:36But the driver of the Golf has other ideas.

0:51:36 > 0:51:39He didn't get out, he didn't run. He just carried on.

0:51:39 > 0:51:42And he carried on. And he carried on.

0:51:42 > 0:51:45And on. And on and on and it just went on and on and on.

0:51:45 > 0:51:48Surely he's going to get out and run.

0:51:48 > 0:51:51The car's deflated front tyre finally breaks free.

0:51:51 > 0:51:54The wheel's come off, his tyre's off, his tyre is off.

0:51:54 > 0:51:58With only three tyres left, the stolen Golf is struggling to keep going

0:51:58 > 0:52:02but, frustratingly, the cops still have to play a waiting game.

0:52:02 > 0:52:05I could run after it. Someone could just run at it now, couldn't they?

0:52:05 > 0:52:09- RADIO:- 'It's a left, left into the Children's Hospital. Standby.'

0:52:09 > 0:52:12After leading the cops round in circles,

0:52:12 > 0:52:14it seems the driver does have a plan,

0:52:14 > 0:52:17with a specific destination in mind.

0:52:17 > 0:52:19He's stopping at the Police Station!

0:52:19 > 0:52:21THEY LAUGH

0:52:21 > 0:52:24Thank you, vehicle's stopped.

0:52:24 > 0:52:25He's finally put on the brakes

0:52:25 > 0:52:28outside Birmingham Central Police Station.

0:52:28 > 0:52:33SIRENS BLARE

0:52:37 > 0:52:43The driver's taken the short walk to the custody suite, while PCs Colman and Rojek

0:52:43 > 0:52:45have a look at the car that went so far on so few tyres.

0:52:45 > 0:52:48I don't know how many times he got stung.

0:52:48 > 0:52:51- He got stung quite a few and it's only done...- Front near side's gone.

0:52:51 > 0:52:54- That went on the first sting.- Yeah.

0:52:54 > 0:52:57When they steal your car, they don't drive it like Miss Daisy.

0:52:57 > 0:53:00You know, they absolutely rag it.

0:53:00 > 0:53:03Really, do you want your car back after that's been done to it?

0:53:03 > 0:53:07The people I've spoke to after I've pursued cars

0:53:07 > 0:53:10and arrested someone, they don't care about the car.

0:53:10 > 0:53:13They're absolutely over the moon that you've caught them.

0:53:17 > 0:53:18At Worcester Police Station,

0:53:18 > 0:53:20the three men who were arrested

0:53:20 > 0:53:24after PC Toal found drugs in their car are being booked into custody.

0:53:24 > 0:53:27And PC Martin is taking the opportunity

0:53:27 > 0:53:29to have a closer look at their belongings.

0:53:29 > 0:53:31Think it's a memory card.

0:53:32 > 0:53:34Can I just have the camera?

0:53:34 > 0:53:35Yeah.

0:53:36 > 0:53:39While the driver and one his passengers are taken to the cells...

0:53:39 > 0:53:41DOOR SLAMS SHUT

0:53:41 > 0:53:43..the man who had drugs in his wallet

0:53:43 > 0:53:45is facing some further questions.

0:53:45 > 0:53:48- What have you taken today? - Amphetamine and what you find.

0:53:50 > 0:53:54- You've taken...what have you taken today?- Yes, I take amphetamine all the time.- Amphetamine.

0:53:54 > 0:53:57- Amphetamine is my...problem.- OK.

0:54:00 > 0:54:03OK, do you know how much you've taken today?

0:54:03 > 0:54:06Not sure. Little bit.

0:54:06 > 0:54:10Despite his admissions, the cops suspect he's holding something back.

0:54:10 > 0:54:12One of my colleagues came through

0:54:12 > 0:54:17and he said that we've just searched the passenger of the car, in custody.

0:54:17 > 0:54:21And we found this odd bit of plastic

0:54:21 > 0:54:25and also a USB stick which was in his sock.

0:54:25 > 0:54:31So you think, well, USB sticks are for computers,

0:54:31 > 0:54:33but why would you put it in your sock?

0:54:33 > 0:54:37And then we kind of had a bit of a debate as to what is this bit of plastic.

0:54:37 > 0:54:42We decided that, actually, that's actually from a speed bank.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45It's actually the bit that you actually place your card into.

0:54:45 > 0:54:49The card gets taken in by the machine and then obviously it spits it out.

0:54:49 > 0:54:52Cashpoint fraud is a huge problem in the UK.

0:54:52 > 0:54:58It's estimated that £33 million is stolen by card-skimming gangs every year.

0:54:58 > 0:55:01The cops may have uncovered a more organised criminal activity

0:55:01 > 0:55:04than their information first suggested.

0:55:04 > 0:55:08We thought, well, OK, I think we really need to go back to the car.

0:55:08 > 0:55:11A specially trained dog is brought in to hunt out hidden cash,

0:55:11 > 0:55:13while PC Toal is getting to grips

0:55:13 > 0:55:16with all the bags and packages in the boot.

0:55:16 > 0:55:20Initially, the search itself was solely for drugs.

0:55:20 > 0:55:26So now we're looking in the car for wires, anything electrical-wise.

0:55:26 > 0:55:28And he doesn't have to dig too deep.

0:55:31 > 0:55:33That's the stuff we're after.

0:55:34 > 0:55:35All the electrical little bits.

0:55:35 > 0:55:39All the wires. We want that.

0:55:40 > 0:55:44Among coils of cables are a couple of tiny cameras.

0:55:44 > 0:55:46We'll take all those wires as well.

0:55:46 > 0:55:49There's all your little bits.

0:55:49 > 0:55:54The cops believe they may have been used to secretly film people's PIN numbers at cash machines.

0:55:54 > 0:55:55That's a result.

0:55:56 > 0:55:58Take all that with us.

0:55:58 > 0:56:03We've obviously had to get everything out the vehicle.

0:56:03 > 0:56:05All the fruits and veg, etc.

0:56:05 > 0:56:09Underneath all that was a roll of what I thought was a roll of newspaper.

0:56:09 > 0:56:11And when I've unravelled it...

0:56:15 > 0:56:18..hey presto, we found the front for an ATM cash machine.

0:56:20 > 0:56:24We've got a...potentially a card...

0:56:24 > 0:56:30it's something that's been made or adapted to go onto an ATM machine,

0:56:30 > 0:56:32where your card would go in.

0:56:32 > 0:56:35If you can see there, it's a mobile phone battery.

0:56:35 > 0:56:39What's that doing on a piece of plastic with some wiring on the back?

0:56:39 > 0:56:45What they're doing is they're using that on the front of an ATM cash machine.

0:56:45 > 0:56:46The cards will go in,

0:56:46 > 0:56:49there'll be electrical device on the back of here

0:56:49 > 0:56:52that's reading the card numbers on somebody's card.

0:56:52 > 0:56:55That's what we call a Lebanese Loop.

0:56:55 > 0:56:59It's made and adapted to get people's card details.

0:56:59 > 0:57:02So that's a very good find and it's going to add weight to,

0:57:02 > 0:57:05obviously, the investigation today. So it's a top result.

0:57:07 > 0:57:10In my 14 years of being a police officer,

0:57:10 > 0:57:13I've only ever come across this twice before.

0:57:13 > 0:57:16So it's a rare crime to actually come across,

0:57:16 > 0:57:19but a common crime that happens and we never normally catch them.

0:57:23 > 0:57:26Despite PC Toal's discoveries,

0:57:26 > 0:57:29no further action was taken against the driver or his passenger.
